Cfr. Graesse,IV,58 e Brunet,VI,28241 / 28242 per la I e la II ediz. Solo qualche lieve fiorit. altrim. esempl. ben conservato.

Junius: Including Letters by the Same Writer, Under Other Signatures (now first collected) to Which are Added his Confidential Correspondence with Mr. Wilkes, and his Private Letters Addressed to Mr. H. S. Woodfall. In three volumes

nbsp;London - F.C. and J. Rivington et al, 1812 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Agorgeous set of thiscollection ofcontroversial political lettersfrom the mysterious 'Junius', published in the Public Advertiser between 1769 and 1772. Features frontispieces in every volume and numerous further plates, some folding, including examples of Junius's handwriting and portraits of eighteenth-century political figures. Junius (fl. 17681773), political writer, was the pseudonym adopted by the author (or possibly authors) of a series of letters which appeared once or twice monthly (sometimes more often) in the Public Advertiser, a leading London newspaper owned by Henry Sampson Woodfall, between 21 January 1769 and 21 January 1772. In this series Juniusnamed after the popular republican hero Lucius Junius Brutusopposed the policies of George III and the administrations of the serving prime ministers, the duke of Grafton and Lord North. Now a classic of English political commentary, the correspondence owes its influence to three interrelated factors: the high whig philosophy espoused to attack tory policies and celebrated political personalities; the literary power of the letters, one of the most effective uses of slanderous polemic ever employed in English political controversy; and, finally, the uncertainty surrounding their authorship. DNBCondition: In half morocco bindings with marbled boards. Externally, extremely attractive and in excellent condition with very little shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Lovely and bright and clean throughout, with just the odd lightly spottedpage, particularly the facsimile handwriting plates,or instance of slight offsetting from the plates. Overall: NEAR FINE..

        The Pontic Rhododendron

Robert James Thornton, 1812. Aquatint printed in color and finished by hand. Image measures 10 1/2" x 7 1/4". Sheet measures 14 5/8" x 12". This lovely print depicts a lavender-colored rhododendron with a small, yellow butterfly to its right. Drawn by Peter Charles Henderson and engraved by John Roffe (c.1769-1850), the print appeared in Robert James Thornton's 1812 edition of "The Temple of Flora." This book featured smaller-scale re-engravings of the floral images from Thornton's original 1802 edition. "The Temple of Flora" is one of the most admired illustrated botanical set ever published in Britain. This copy of the print is in good condition, with slight browning on the edges of the margins not affecting the image and very light off-setting throughout. Dr. Robert John Thornton (1768-1837) was an English physician and botanical writer. A specialist in medical botany, Thornton dedicated the later part of his life to publishing collections of floral plates. "The Temple of Flora" was the final and most ambitious volume of "A New Illustration of the Sexual System of Carolus Von Linnæus," which Thornton commissioned and compiled between 1797 and 1807. This print is a lovely example of his work.

THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER, AND ADMINISTRATION OF THE SACRAMENTS AND OTHER RITES AND CEREMONIES OF THE CHURCH, ACCORDING TO THE USE OF THE PROTESTANT EPISCOPAL CHURCH IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Philadelphia: Moses Thomas, 1812.. 324,242,[17]pp. plus engraved titlepage and six plates. Contemporary red morocco, gilt. Ownership stamping on cover, somewhat defaced, reading "E. Gerry." Minor foxing and soiling. Very good. Illustrated Book of Common Prayer for the Episcopal Church. This copy is notable for the ownership stamping on the cover: E. Gerry. Since, unfortunately, there is no inscription in the book, it is not possible to say definitively if this E. Gerry is Elbridge Gerry, the Founding Father; however, Elbridge Gerry was an Episcopalian and the time frame is correct (he died in 1814). As a man of stature, he surely would have owned a lovely copy of the prayer book, such as this. If this was indeed Elbridge Gerry's copy, it would have been used by him during his term as Vice President. SHAW & SHOEMAKER 24856, 26534. GRIFFITHS 1812/23.

Entrance of the Harbour of Rio de Janeiro [with] View of the Town of St. Sebastian at Rio Janeiro on the W. Side of the Harbour

Extremely rare pair of aquatint views of Rio de Janeiro. 1812. London. Edward Orme, Printseller to the King, Engraver & Publisher. Minor foxing, one creased, else excellent, paper watermarked J Whatman. c. 406 mm x 280 mm. Pair of extremely rare aquatints of the port of Rio de Janeiro, both apparently unknown to neither bibliographers nor can any copy be traced as having been sold at auction. We have located this pair at the British Museum, their copies colored, acquisitioned in 1917 through a donation of Baroness Lucas of Crudwell. It is likely the aquatints were separately published; Orme was the creator of other scenes of South American ports, such as the Storming of Montevideo, c.1808. The views are after Thomas Sydenham, who accompanied Envoy Extraordinary to Portugal and Brazil Charles Stuart, 1st Baron de Rothesay, and later succeeded him in his post from 1814-1817. They show the harbor from the sea, with mountains flanking the strait, ships along the coastline, and the town of San Sebastian across the sea, with ships along the coastline, houses isolated on the heights and a fort; the city was named Sao Sebastiao do Rio de Janeiro, in honor of Saint Sebastian.

Court Case Documents Brought by William Lawrence against Samuel Gwathmey, an Important Figure in Early Indiana History and a Slave Owner , for Assault and Battery

Clark County, Indiana Territory, 1812. Five original trial case documents, signed, single page, content in fine hand to rectos and versos, one bears an embossed territorial seal. Documents ranging in size from 6 x 4 inches to 8 x 12 inches. Toning, fold lines, light browning to edges, split at one fold, otherwise in original condition, an appealing set of documents. Transcriptions and detailed notes are included. These documents chronicle a suit against Samuel Gwathmey, an important figure in early Indiana history, for assault and battery on William Lawrence, who is identified as a "man of colour." The first document, dated March 12, 1812, certifies that the grand jury concludes that the case should go to trial. The reverse notes that Gwathmey was acquitted in 1813. It is signed by the judge, John Gibson, another important Indianan. The Second, dated July 27, 1812, confirms that Gwathmey's case will proceed to trial. The third and fourth documents are subpoenas to the sheriff of Clark County instructing him to bring Gwathmey to the "court house in Charles Town" [sic]. They are dated March 2, 1812 and January 2, 1813. The fifth document is a subpoena for three men to testify. It is dated January 2, 1813. Gwathmey was one of the trustees who laid out the town of Jeffersonville, Indiana. Among other offices, he was clerk of Clark County and a member of the first legislative council of Indiana Territory. He was also the first land registrar of Jeffersonville until he was removed by Andrew Jackson for political reasons. He was a slave owner. Gibson was Territorial Secretary of the Indiana Territory from 1800 to 1816, the time when Indiana became a state. Before his appointment he was a judge in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, a Major General in the militia and a member of the 1790 state constitutional convention. He was acting governor of Indiana Territory for tho extended periods.. Signed.
