Travels through the Southern Provinces of the Russian Empire, in the Years 1793 and 1794 ... Second Edition

London: printed for John Stockdale, 1812. 2 volumes, quarto. (11 3/8 x 9 1/4 inches). 55 engraved or engraved and aquatint plates, plans and maps, most by or after G. Geissler (45 hand-coloured, 25 folding, 4 double- page), 29 vignette illustrations (23 hand-coloured). Period diced russia, coveres bordered with a gilt roll tool and double fillet, rebacked at a later date with the original black morocco lettering pieces retained, endpapers renewed. Scarce second edition in English of "an extremely charming colour plate book" (Tooley). Tooley goes on to observe that this work "deserves a place in every colour plate book collection for its numerous attractive coloured vignettes, an unusual feature." Pallas's odyssey was first published in German in St. Petersburg under the title St Reise durch verschiedene Provinzen des russichen Reichs (St. Petersburg, 1771-76). Pallas, the newly-appointed professor of natural history at the Imperial Academy of Science in St. Petersburg, undertook an official six- year expedition from 1768 to 1774 during which he explored the most distant regions of the Russian empire. The journey (taking him first to the Caspian sea, and then across the Urals to Tobolsk, the Altai mountains, Omsk, Kolyvan, Tomsk, and Krasnojarsk, next to Irkoutsk, Lake Baikal, Oudinsk, Sélinghinsk, Kiakhta, the Amour river, and back to Krasnojarsk, thence to Tara, Jaitskoi-Gorodsk, Astrakhan, Tasaritzin and St. Petersburg) is here well described and beautifully illustrated with most of the plates and vignettes by Geissler. cf. Abbey Travel I.222; cf.Cat. Rusica P59; cf. Tooley 357.

Le Règne Animal Distribué D'Après Son Organisation, Pour Servir De Base À L'Histoire Naturelle Des Animaux Et D'Introduction À L'Anatomie Comparée.Paris: Deterville, 1817. First edition.

A beautiful set of in fine contemporary French calf. "The most influential exposition of typological approach to animal classification, representing the greatest body of zoological facts that had yet been assembled; it served as the standard zoological manual for most Europe during the first half of the nineteenth century." (Norman). PMM 276; Dibner 195; Sparrow, Milestone 42; Norman 567.

"Using the taxonomic system that he had introduced in 1812 in his memoire 'Sur un nouveau rapprochement à établir entre led classes quicomposent le règne animal,' Cuvier divided the animal kingdom into four main types or embrachements: Vertebrata, Mollusca, Articulata and Radiata, each with its own subgroups. This represented an attempt at a 'natutal' classification system, based upon the assumption that the characteristic interrelationship between an animal's function and structure placed it within an exclusive group (i.e., that species were 'real'), as opposed to the more artificial systems of the past, which had been based upon single features of species. Cuvier's view of animal organization led him to an early recognition of balance of nature, both with respect to the functional balance of parts in the individual and the interdependence of groups in the 'network of nature'." (Norman).. 4 volumes, 8vo (204 x 127mm), bound in four uniform very fine French contemporary calf bindings with richly gilt spines, marbled paper and green vellum corners, fully complete with all half-titles and the front and rear blanks: pp [i-v] vi-xxxvii [1], [1] 2-540; [i-v] vi-xviii, [1] 2-532; [i-v] vi-xxix [1], [1] 2-656 [3]; [i-v] vi-viii, [1] 2-190, 192-244 [1] and 15 engraved plates by Pierron and Louvet after drawings by Laurillon. SKETCHES TOWARDS A HORTUS BOTANICUS AMERICANUS; OR, COLOURED PLATES (WITH A CATALOGUE AND CONCISE AND FAMILIAR DESCRIPTIONS OF MANY SPECIES) OF NEW AND VALUABLE PLANTS OF THE WEST INDIES AND NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA

London: Sherwood, Neely, and Jones; 1812.. xiv,xiii-xvi,viii,132,[cxxxiii]-cxxxvii,[4]pp. plus eighteen handcolored plates of trees, seeds, flowers, and fruits (several figures to a plate) with accompany letterpress text explanations (with separate pagination) for each plate. Quarto. Antique-style half calf and marbled boards, spine gilt, leather label. Titlepage slightly soiled, minor age- toning. Contemporary gift inscription on first page of preface. Old repaired tear in bottom margin of first page of preface, touching a few lines of text. A very good copy. This copy bears a contemporary gift inscription on the first page of the preface: "The gift of Warwick Pearson Esq. of Kirky, Lonsdale, Westmoreland to Tho. Warwick Syndman, Antigua." Titford was a Jamaica-born physician who lived on that island for many years, travelled extensively in the United States, and described himself as a corresponding member of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts. Otherwise little is known about him, excepting this work, for which he made all of the original drawings for the beautiful handcolored plates. Titford's only known publication, the work was originally issued in six parts, and editions appear with titlepages dated 1811 and 1812. These factors may account in part for the variations in pagination between extant copies, supporting Ian MacPhail's comment in his "Titford's HORTUS BOTANICUS AMERICANUS..." that "the cataloguer who is faced with the bewildering collation of J.W. Titford: SKETCHES TOWARDS A HORTUS BOTANICUS AMERICANUS, London, 1811, is likely to throw up his hands in despair." An exquisite color plate botanical work, one of the earliest to depict American plant species, here with a fine contemporary Caribbean provenance. TAXONOMIC LITERATURE 14606. PLESCH, p.436. Théorie Analytique des Probabilités.Paris: Courcier, 1812.

First edition of "the most influential book on probability and statistics ever written." (Anders Hald).

"Laplace's great treatise on probability appeared in 1812, with later editions in 1814 and 1820. Its picture of probability theory was entirely different from the picture in 1750. On the philosophical side was Laplace's interpretation of probability as rational belief, with inverse probability as its underpinning. On the mathematical side was the method of generating functions, the central limit theorem, and Laplace's technique for evaluating posterior probabilities. On the applied side, games of chance were still evidence, but they were dominated by problems of data analysis and Bayesian methods for combining probabilities of judgments, which replaced the earlier non-Bayesian methods of Hooper and Bernoulli." (Grattan-Guiness: History and Philosophy of the Mathematical Sciences, p.1301).

"In the Théorie Laplace gave a new level of mathematical foundation and development both to probability theory and to mathematical statistics. ... [It] emerged from a long series of slow processes and once established, loomed over the landscape for a century or more." (Stephen Stigler: Landmark Writings in Western Mathematics, p.329-30).

"It was the first full-scale study completely devoted to a new specialty, ... [and came] to have the same sort of relation to the later development of probability that, for example, Newton's Principia Mathematica had to the later science of mechanics." (DSB).

Evans, First Editions of Epochal Achievements 12; Landmark Writings in Western Mathematics 24; Honeyman 1923.. 4to: 255 x 190 mm. Contemporary half calf. Pp. [VI], 464, [2: errata and blank]. A little browning and spotting throughout (as usual with this book), old owners signature scraped from the lower right corner of the title, in all a very good copy

[Melon] Scarlet Flesh Rock [Pl. 66]

[London]: G. Brookshaw, '1812' [buit watermarked 1816]. Aquatint engraving, with some stipple, printed in colours and finished by hand. In good condition. Image size: 16 x 12 3/4 inches. 20 1/2 x 16 1/4 inches. A fine image from Brookshaw's masterpiece: 'Pomona Britannica; or, A Collection of the Most Esteemed Fruits'. George Brookshaw's 'Pomona Britannica' is the finest work on fruit and flowers ever produced. Its breathtaking images display a level of technical virtuosity and beauty that distinguish this magnificent work as a true work of art.As a retired cabinetmaker, Brookshaw produced his seminal botanical study late in his career, at first publishing it in parts and then as a complete edition in 1812. The fact that this outstanding work took ten years to complete is evident in the quality of its images and the care with which Brookshaw executed each individual picture. 'Pomona Britannica' was produced as a visual record of the best available varieties of fruit in an attempt to encourage gardeners to experiment with growing fruit, and illustrates examples found in the Royal gardens at Hampton Court, Kensington Gardens, and the private gardens of the Prince of Wales in Blackheath.'Pomona Britannica' differs from other botanical works in its dark aquatinted backgrounds and its stylized compositions. By using aquatint to create a contrasting background, Brookshaw manages to produce a truly dramatic effect. His use of stylized composition distinguishes his pictures from the dry scientific illustrations found in other botanical studies and creates an exceptionally beautiful visual experience. 'Pomona Britannica' is not only a didactic study, it is a masterpiece of illustration in which every picture is a testament to the artist's talent and ingenuity. Cf. Dunthorne 50; cf. Great Flower Books (1990) p. 81; cf. Nissen BBI 244; cf. Sandra Raphael An Oak Spring Pomona 40a.

Of the Various Tribes of Indians Through Which They Passed? To which is added a Complete Dictionary of the Indian Tongue

Anthony Multenberger 12mo (6 ¾ x 3 ¾), period sheep, rebacked with modern leather, old spine label, two wood engraved frontispiece portraits, 326 pp. Housed in custom made half morocco folding box. Covers a little worn and scuffed, contents foxed with some browning and soiling; lower corner of pp. 29-30 torn off, affecting a few words, and a tear on pp. 81-82; otherwise very good. Some sources suggest there are one or two other plates in this title, but only the portraits are bound in this volume. The Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804-1806) was the first overland expedition by the United States to go to the Pacific coast. This was an extremely important expedition because it laid the groundwork for the Western Expansion, and gave our government a first hand account of the resources we picked up with the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. The expedition was led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, but was greatly assisted by Sacajawea, their Native American guide and translator. This work was published because of the growing demand by the public for information on the expedition. Fisher borrows heavily from Patrick Gass?s Journal, and portions of the works of Jonathan Carver and Alexander Mackenzie. While it has been criticized by scholars, it contains some extremely useful information, and it did play an important role in shaping the impressions of America at the time. Contains portraits of Lewis and Clark.

        Hibiscus Sabdarifta [Pl. 29]

[Paris: 1812-1814]. Stipple engraving, printed in colour and finished by hand, engraved by Bouquet. Very good condition. 21 1/2 x 14 1/4 inches. A fine plate from Bonpland's "Description des Plantes Rares Cultivées á Malmaison et á Navarre" considered to be the apex of Redouté's achievement as a botanical illustrator. Throughout his career, Redouté enjoyed royal patronage, beginning with Marie Antoinette and including the Empress Josephine, for whom he served as official painter. After Empress Josephine's divorce from Napoleon, Navarre became her principal residence, and she sought to recreate the horticultural splendours of Malmaison. This was the last work for which Redoute enjoyed her patronage, yet with the perfection of his stipple process, the illustrations are perfect both scientifically and artistically, and are a fitting close to the great era of Napoleonic works in which all available resources were used to document new and rare species. Bonpland, who provided the text for the work, was the botanist who accompanied von Humboldt in his explorations of South America and had succeeded Ventenat as botanist to Josephine. BIOGRAPHIA DRAMATICA; OR, A COMPANION TO THE PLAY HOUSE

Longman Hurst Rees Orme and Brown London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1812. Third Edition. 229 x 146 mm (9 x 5 3/4").Three volumes bound in six. Edited by Stephen Jones. Inoffensive 19th century dark brown straight-grain half morocco, wide raised bands, gilt titling, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, other edges untrimmed. EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with 164 portraits of playwrights, actors, and others affiliated with the theater, one of the portraits hand colored. Extra title label bound in. Front pastedown of each volume with bookplate of Hildegarde F. Schine. Joints somewhat rubbed, hinge at the back of first volume open, several scuffs and abrasions to spines, most corners rather worn, but the bindings all completely solid, with much of the wear masked by neat refurbishing. Variable offsetting (never severe) from inserted engravings, volume V with intermittent minor foxing and browning, isolated places elsewhere inoffensively foxed or spotted, but the text generally fresh and clean. This survey of the British theater contains "historical and critical memoirs, and original anecdotes, of British and Irish dramatic writers, from the commencement of . . . theatrical exhibitions," which Baker dates from the mystery plays of Richard II's reign (while recognizing the earlier efforts of travelling players, dating back to the late 12th century). There are brief biographies of playwrights, players, producers, and patrons, followed by listings and summaries of plays, with their date of first publication. Our extra-illustrated volume is furnished with portraits of a number of these luminaries. The grandson of Daniel Defoe and godson of the earl of Buchan, Baker (1730-67?) was a studious boy whose intelligence (and social connections) earned him a spot in the Tower of London training course for royal engineers. But the prospect of a scientific career was thwarted by Baker's love of the theater, and to his family's consternation, he repeatedly ran away to join troupes of actors. He married the actress Elizabeth Clendon (d. 1778) in 1762, and the couple lived mostly in Edinburgh, where Mrs. Baker was a star of the stage. Appearing for the third time in 1812, our book was first issued as "The Companion to the Play House" in 1764, then revised and expanded by Isaac Reed, being printed under the present title in 1782. DNB notes that "Baker's work was indebted to that of his predecessor Gerard Langbaine, and adds little concerning early dramatists, but has remained a useful reference work for the history of the early eighteenth-century stage." Although there are some condition issues here, the fact that the leaves have been untrimmed means that there are very ample margins throughout, and although there is some offsetting from the inserted portraits, these are plentiful, clean, and pleasing. There are other copies of the three early editions for sale in the market currently, but none of these others is extra-illustrated.

Oriental Scenery [parts I-V]; Hindoo Excavations in the mountain of Ellora [part VI]

London: printed for Thomas and William Daniell at the Free-School Press ... and published by William Daniell and Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown, 1812-1816 [pre-publication watermarks]. 6 parts in three volumes, tall quarto. (15 x 10 5/8 inches). 6 additional pictorial aquatint titles, 144 aquatint views, 8 engraved plans. Expertly bound to style in red half morocco over contemporary marbled paper-covered boards, spines in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in gilt in the second and third compartments. Scarce complete set of the first quarto edition of Daniell's masterpiece: the greatest pictorial record of India and her antiquities ever published. This copy in extraordinary condition. "The Daniells left England in 1785, when William was only about sixteen, and they were back in England in September 1794. From an early stage Thomas seems to have set out to emulate and surpass Hodges (Select Views in India) in popularizing his views through the comparatively new medium of aquatint. The uncle and nephew were determined not only to do better than Hodges but to expose the weaknesses of the pioneer's work by choosing the same views as Hodges had done, drawing them more accurately, and aquatinting them more skilfully" (Abbey Scenery II, p.377). The plates here are reduced versions of the justly famous large folio, hand-coloured plates which the Daniells engraved from their own drawings made during their extended expedition to India (except for the plates in the sixth and final part which was issued under the title Hindoo Excavations and were based on the drawings of James Wales). The Daniells's reasons for publishing this beautifully prepared version of their masterpiece is given at the front of the first series: they note that the large folio work is "well known, not only in the British dominions, but on the Continent, where [it is] ... to be found in most of the principal libraries. This collection, however ... has acquired a magnitude that necessarily limits its possession to the few who can purchase works of such expense. To obviate this objection, and to give to materials, so generally interesting, a more extensive range of circulation, Messrs. Daniell have determined to publish a careful and accurate edition, in quarto, of the same work; on which ... they will be enabled to affix a price so moderate as to be of easy purchase ... when completed, [the set] will be comprised in three volumes, containing in the whole 150 prints." The success of this first quarto edition can be judged from the fact that it was reprinted at least twice, in various forms, and was still available from Henry Bohn in the late 1840s.This book is notorious for being found in poor condition. The present copy, however, is free of all foxing and is the finest copy we have ever encountered. Abbey Travel II, 432 (uncoloured, early issue); M. Hardie & M. This is the lifeof John Collier, not a fictionalised account of Tim Bobbin. John Collier, 1708-1786, was a satirist and caricaturist. His motto was apparently 'Laugh, and be fat', which he lived up to heartily. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. There is slight edge wear to the extremities. Internally the pages have some browning with foxing only prominent to the first and last pages and the plates as usual. There area fewfaded tidemarks to some plates.
