      [Paris: 1812-1814]. Stipple engraving, printed in colour and finished by hand, engraved by Legrand. Very good condition. 21 7/8 x 14 3/8 inches. A fine plate from Bonpland's "Description des Plantes Rares Cultivées á Malmaison et á Navarre" considered to be the apex of Redouté's achievement as a botanical illustrator. Throughout his career, Redouté enjoyed royal patronage, beginning with Marie Antoinette and including the Empress Josephine, for whom he served as official painter. After Empress Josephine's divorce from Napoleon, Navarre became her principal residence, and she sought to recreate the horticultural splendours of Malmaison. This was the last work for which Redoute enjoyed her patronage, yet with the perfection of his stipple process, the illustrations are perfect both scientifically and artistically, and are a fitting close to the great era of Napoleonic works in which all available resources were used to document new and rare species. Bonpland, who provided the text for the work, was the botanist who accompanied von Humboldt in his explorations of South America and had succeeded Ventenat as botanist to Josephine.       First edition of "the most influential book on probability and statistics ever written." (Anders Hald). <br/><br/> "Laplace's great treatise on probability appeared in 1812, with later editions in 1814 and 1820. Its picture of probability theory was entirely different from the picture in 1750. On the philosophical side was Laplace's interpretation of probability as rational belief, with inverse probability as its underpinning. On the mathematical side was the method of generating functions, the central limit theorem, and Laplace's technique for evaluating posterior probabilities. On the applied side, games of chance were still evidence, but they were dominated by problems of data analysis and Bayesian methods for combining probabilities of judgments, which replaced the earlier non-Bayesian methods of Hooper and Bernoulli."         Über Interpolation.Berlin: Königlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften, 1828. First edition.

      First printing of what is now called the Gauss-Newton interpolation formula; which enables one to predict the value of a quantity given a finite number of observations. Gauss had lectured on the interpolation formula at Göttingen in 1812; his then student Encke attended Gauss's lectures, and published his notes on them in the present paper almost two decades later. Gauss's interest in interpolation formulas derived from their obvious application to predicting the present position of a celestial body given several observations of its position in the past. Gauss had become famous by correctly predicting the position of the minor planet Ceres, discovered by G. Piazzi on 1 January 1801, on 7 December 1801 after its orbit had taken it behind the Sun. Although Gauss published nothing on the interpolation formula during his lifetime, a manuscript discussing it entitled 'Theoria Interpolationis Methodo Nova Tractata' was found in his <i>Nachlass</i> and published in <i>Werke</i>, vol. III, pp. 265-327.<br/><br/> Encke (1791-1865) is now principally remembered for his work on comets. He predicted the orbit of a comet discovered in 1818 and when this was confirmed by observation the comet was named after him. His work brought him the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society. In 1825 he became professor at the Berlin Academy of Sciences and director of the Berlin Observatory. "After his appointment at Berlin, [he] undertook the editing of the <i>Berliner Astronomisches Jahrbuch</i>... With the support of his assistants... he issued the yearbooks for 1830-1866... Its issuance was a private matter, supported by the state, but not without economic risk. The opportunity to publish made possible the appearance of Encke's treatises in the yearbooks, dealing particularly with orbit determinations and perturbation computations" (DSB). In the present volume, the first of the yearbooks issued by Encke, the first section (pp. 1-235) is taken up with tables of ephemerides, while the second section (pp. 239-308) is taken up with five papers by Encke on the calculation of stellar occultations, on a stellar sextant, etc., as well as the paper on the interpolation formula. <br/><br/> Provennace: Contemporary engraved bookplate of (third) Earl of Dunraven on front paste-down. Edwin Quin, third Earl of Dunraven, was educated at Eton where he showed a strong taste for astronomy; and afterwards spent three years at the Dublin Observatory under Sir William Rowan Hamilton. While the natural sciences occupied much of his attention; he was also deeply interested in the study of Irish antiquities, and was a prominent member of the Royal Irish Academy, the Celtic Society, and several archaeological associations. His <i>Notes on Irish Architecture</i> (two volumes, London: 1875-77) were published after his death in 1871.. in: Berliner Astronomisches Jahrbuch für 1830... herausgegeben von J. F. Volume two (The Subjective Logic) bound in a nice recent brown half calf in old style with gilt and blindstamped ornamentation to back; the old end-papers are also preserved. A very nice and sound set with only a bit of scattered brwonspotting, mostly to the first part. XIV (= title-page + Vorrede), XXVIII (= Einleitung), 334; VI (= title-page + Inhaltsanzeige), 282; (2 = general title-page stating second volume of Wissenschaft der Logik), X (= title-page, Vorbericht + Inhaltsanzeige), 403, (1) pp.. The very scarce first editions of all three volumes that together constitute Hegel's second main work, his "Science of Logic", also called his "Greater Logic" (as opposed to the Logic section of the Encyclopaedia), in which logic is seen as the science of pure thought, concerning the principles by which concepts are formed, and therefore also as that which reveals to us the principles of pure knowing. THIS IS THE RAREST OF ANY OF HEGEL'S MAJOR WORKS TO FIND COMPLETE.Hegel's "Logic" is begun five years after his first major work, the "Phänomenologie des Geistes", and the five years which Hegel has had to develop his philosophy in the meantime are clearly reflected in his monumental second masterpiece. The "Logic" can be regarded as a more systematic and well organized epistemological and ontological work. It is in this groundbreaking work of German Idealism that Hegel develops his famous dialectic, which comes to determinate all later reading of his philosophy. It is Hegel's dialectic theory later condensed as "thesis-antithesis-synthesis" that is developed in this main work of 19th century philosophy. The dialectical process constitutes the movement of thought and consciousness, from basic to complex ideas, and thus demonstrates how the categorical infrastructure of thought can be laid bare by thought itself alone. With this work, Hegel is considered as having created a revolution in the understanding of Logic, because he widens it from being merely concerned with formal rules of propositions to including all of humanity. He elaborates the laws that govern the development of human practice, and as a consequence, he also uncovers the objective laws that govern the entire objective material world. Throughout the 20th century, Hegel's logical philosophy was largely neglected, but the last 40-50 years have shown a revived interest in this most fundamental of works, which is of the greatest importance for the understanding of his systematic thought.Hegel himself considered his "Logic" to be of the utmost importance, and he kept revising it throughout the years. It is very difficult to find a set of all three volumes in first editions

OCLC 61389517 records one copy only at Haverford. The four plates in this pirated edition, though clearly copied from the English edition of 1808, which was issued by John Harris with an entirely new suite of plates replacing the original and superior illustrations by Mulready of 1807, show some distinct and imaginative variations.Welch (1129) list an earlier printing of this version in 1809, published by B. C. Buzby of Philadelphia.

In excellent condition with the exception of two small mended tears on the right margin. Two small mended tears on upper margin. Crease along left corner. Tiny skillfully mended tear on left margin. Image size: 12 7/8 x 19 1/8 inches. 14 1/4 x 20 1/2 inches. 16 1/8 x 22 3/8 inches. A dramatic view of Newark Castle in Nottinghamshire. The site became a fortified castle during the 12th century when Henry I gave Alexander, Bishop of Lincoln, permission to build ramparts and a moat. The castle was appropriated in 1139 by King Stephen but was reinstated to Lincoln in 1173. In 1216 King John died at the castle and thereafter it was seized by a group of barons. In 1218 Henry III besieged the castle and, after being bombarded in it for eight days, the barons surrendered. Restored and rebuilt in red sandstone by the end of the 13th century, it had become a magnificent fortified mansion. In Tudor times Henry VIII took the castle from Bishop Henry Holbeach and after that it remained in royal hands. During the Civil War, Newark was a Royalist stronghold. It was besieged four times by the Parliamentarians. King Charles I took refuge at the castle before retreating to Oxford, and the town finally surrendered its stronghold. Benezit mentions a British landscape painter by the name J. R. Hamble who was active in London during the early decades of the nineteenth century. He exhibited at rare intervals at the Royal Academy between 1803 and 1824, and was mentioned as an accomplished landscape painter. There is some confusion surrounding an engraver named J. Hamble who executed numerous topographical prints of the English countryside, and it is queried whether these artists are in fact the same person. Le Blanc mentions an engraver by the name of J. Hamble, but fails to list his works. Le Blanc, Manuel de L'Amateur D'Estampes I, p. 340; Benezit, Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs, vol. 6, p. 703.
