CURSE OF KEHAMA

London Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown 1812 - 2 volumes. A very early printing, only two years after the original. A copy with fine provenance, being that of Anne MacKenzie Gladstone, sister of William Ewart Gladstone, four times British Prime Minister. With further family ownership inscription to the free-fly. 12mo, in lovely antique polished calf of the period, the covers decorated with a gilt ruled rolled frame in a fan and flower motif, the spines with gilt stippled raised bands gilt ruled, the compartments with elaborate gilt tooled frames surrounding a central gilt tooled floral device, each volume with two navy morocco labels gilt lettered and rolled in blind, gilt tooled board edges and turn-ins, page edges marbled. Each volume with dated 1818 autograph signature of Anne MacKenzie Gladstone and 1852 signature of T. Gladstone (likely her brother, Thomas Gladstone) on the front blanks. xi, [2], 252; [2], 213 pp. A very fine set, in a wonderful state of preservation, the paper fresh and clean, the bindings solid, handsome and in fully original state with just a light bit of wear to the extremities and very minor chipping at the spine tips. A BEAUTIFUL SET WITH FINE PROVENANCE, OF THIS CLASSIC BY ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT OF THE LAKE COUNTRY POETS. A FINE PRINTING OF THE POEM AND WITH EXTENSIVE NOTES ON INDIAN RELIGION AND PHILOSOPHY. Southey was a contemporary of Wordsworth, Shelley and Keats and a highly important poet in his own right. "Courses are like young chickens, they always come home to roost." This is an uncommonly fresh and fine set of Southey’s epic poem. ‘KEHAMA’ was based on Hindu mythology, but even more so on Southey’s own memories of his school days when he suffered terrible insomnia. It was one of his school mates, "a dark and mysterious boy", who formed the basis for one of the poem’s villains. Although the poem describes Hindu myth, it is heavily influenced by Zoroastrian theology and the ideal of a dualistic moral system. Part of Southey's focus on India stems from the recent British colonial expansion into India and rising interest by British citizens for Indian culture. Critics praised the quality of the poem's language. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Wissenschaft der Logik (The Science of Logic).

Die objective Logik: TP + [III]-X = Vorrede + [XI]-XIV = Inhalt + [I]-XXVIII = Einleitung + 334 [plis] Zweytes Buch. Die Lehre vom Wesen): TP + [III]-VI = Inhalt + [1]-282. Volume 2: Zweiter Band. Wissenschaft der subjectiven Logik oder die Lehre vom Begriff: Series TP on verso [facing] TP + [III]-VI = Vorbericht + VII-X = Inhalt + [1]-403. Octavo. All Three in First Edition. Hegel's Science of Logic in a Gorgeous Matched Contemporary SetAll Three Books bound in Two Volumes - Each in First Edition (1812, 1813 & 1816)Hegel's The Science of Logic provided a complete outline for his vision of logic; an ontology that incorporates the traditional Aristotelian syllogism not as a foundational element, but rather as a sub-component of his system. For Hegel, the most important achievement of German Idealism (starting with Kant and culminating in his own philosophy), was the demonstration that Reality is shaped through and through by mind and, when properly understood, actually is nothing other than Mind. Thus ultimately the structures of thought and reality, subject and object, are identical. This means that, for Hegel, the underlying structure of all Reality is ultimately rational so logic is not merely about reasoning or argument but rather is also the rational, structural core of all of Reality and every dimension of it. The Science of Logic thus includes (among other things) analyses of being, nothingness, becoming, existence, reality, essence, reflection, concept, and method. As developed, it includes the fullest description of his dialectic. These three books together are sometimes referred to as the Greater Logic to distinguish it from the condensed version of his thoughts on logic presented in what is called the Lesser Logic, namely the Logic section of his Encyclopedia of the Philosophical Sciences.Hegel wrote 'The Science of Logic' after he had completed his Phenomenology of Spirit and while he was in Nuremberg working at a secondary school and courting his fiancée. It was published in a number of volumes. The first, 'The Objective Logic', has two parts (the Doctrines of Being and Essence) and each part was published in 1812 and 1813 respectively. The second volume, 'The Subjective Logic' was published in 1816 the same year he became a professor of philosophy at Heidelberg. The Science of Logic was found to be too advanced for undergraduate students so Hegel wrote his Lesser Logig for the Encyclopedia which was published in 1817.Hegel considered his Logik to be one of his major works and therefore kept it up to date through constant revision. In 1826, when the book went out of stock, instead of reprinting as requested, he undertook to revise it. By 1831, Hegel had completed a greatly revised and expanded version of the 'Doctrine of Being', but had no time to revise the rest of the book. The Preface to the second edition is dated 7 November 1831, just before his death on 14 November 1831. That edition appeared in 1832, and again in 1834-5 in the posthumous Works. The only English translation has been based on this second edition. matching contemporary ¾ leather with dark green marbled boards. The spines have gilt decorations and the title in gilt on a red field. There is some light wear to the exterior (most especially to the bumped corners), but otherwise the bindings present themselves beautifully. The text is generally clean and bright which comes with a beautiful custom clamshell box with ½ leather over marbled boards and red morocco spine labels. Overall a truly exceptional copy of one of the more important works in Western Philosophy. PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.

Théorie Analytique des Probabilités.Paris: Courcier, 1812.

First edition of "the most influential book on probability and statistics ever written." (Anders Hald).

"Laplace's great treatise on probability appeared in 1812, with later editions in 1814 and 1820. Its picture of probability theory was entirely different from the picture in 1750. On the philosophical side was Laplace's interpretation of probability as rational belief, with inverse probability as its underpinning. On the mathematical side was the method of generating functions, the central limit theorem, and Laplace's technique for evaluating posterior probabilities. On the applied side, games of chance were still evidence, but they were dominated by problems of data analysis and Bayesian methods for combining probabilities of judgments, which replaced the earlier non-Bayesian methods of Hooper and Bernoulli." (Grattan-Guiness: History and Philosophy of the Mathematical Sciences, p.1301).

"In the Théorie Laplace gave a new level of mathematical foundation and development both to probability theory and to mathematical statistics. ... [It] emerged from a long series of slow processes and once established, loomed over the landscape for a century or more." (Stephen Stigler: Landmark Writings in Western Mathematics, p.329-30).

"It was the first full-scale study completely devoted to a new specialty, ... [and came] to have the same sort of relation to the later development of probability that, for example, Newton's Principia Mathematica had to the later science of mechanics." (DSB).

Evans, First Editions of Epochal Achievements 12; Landmark Writings in Western Mathematics 24; Honeyman 1923.. 4to, fine contemporary half calf with vellum corners, pp [vi] 464, [3: errata], pages 149/150 with a crease (from before it was bound and pressed), one leaf has a closed tear in the margin (no loss), and one gathering is lightly browned and some very light spotting to a few leaves. Baluzzi Ancona: Baluzzi, (1812). 32pp. This attractively printed calendar notes holidays and the dates for the change of seasons. Each month is marked with sunrise times, and the ecclesiastical significance of each day is noted. The almanac closes with four pages of brief guidelines for a happy and virtuous domestic life. This copy retains its original binding of gilt-decorated green paper with an engraved, cameo-style portrait of a woman in the center of the upper and lower covers. The gilt is slightly rubbed and there is some edgewear, but otherwise this fragile binding is in remarkable condition. Internally, there is a short closed tear to the lower margin of a single leaf, and a small stray ink mark, else quite clean and crisp. (2 5/8 by 2 1/4; 68x52mm).

Histoire de Louis Mandrin, Depuis sa naissance jusqu'a sa mort; Avec un detail de ses curantes, de ses brigandages et de ses supplices.

A Avignon Chez Jean-Albet Joly. 1812 - Small 8vo, 119 x 72 mms., pp. 134 including woodcut frontispiece, original wrappers, uncut; extremities frayed, early reenforcement of spine with cloth. Mandrin (1725 - 1755) is often called the "Robin Hood of France," and there are numerous accounts of his revolt against the tax authorities and his successful career as a smuggler. After numerous escapades and brief encounters with the French militia, he was captured, tried, and put to death by having his arms and legs broken and then tied to a wheel. The first account of his life and adventures was published in the year of his death. The only copy of this edition that I have been able to trace is in the Bibliotheque Nationale. James Madison and James Monroe Appoint a Head of Military Procurement and Distribution During the War of 1812

James Madison and James Monroe Appoint a Head of Military Procurement and Distribution During the War of 1812.& The highest ranking wartime appointment we have seen& & When the War of 1812 broke out, getting supplies and munitions to the armed forces became a matter of great urgency. The system in place soon proved to be a great failure, as official reports from Gen. Henry Dearborn and other commanders of troops on the Canadian frontier showed that as early as November and December, 1812, they were in dire extremities on account of deficiency of rations, arising from failure of contractors to make deliveries according to their contracts. President Madison and Congress determined to integrate the acquisitions and distribution schemes and to name a single director to manage the entire effort. On the 3d of March, 1813, an act was passed with the significant title of "An Act better to provide for the supplies of the Army of the United States, and for the accountability of persons intrusted with the same." One section of this act provided that there should be a "superintendent-general of military supplies," whose functions were to keep proper accounts of all the military stores and supplies purchased for, and distributed to, the U.S. Army; to prescribe the forms of all returns and accounts of stores and supplies; and to perform all other duties respecting the general superintendence, purchase, transportation, and safe-keeping of military stores and supplies, and the accountability therefor as might be prescribed by the Secretary of War.& & Congressman Richard Cutts of the Maine District of Massachusetts married Anna Payne, sister of Dolley Madison, and was thus President Madison's brother-in-law. Cutts was defeated for reelection in 1812 and his last day in that office was March 3, 1813. Madison named him to fill this important office in this very document.& & Document Signed, Washington, March 29, 1813, stating "That in pursuance of the Act of Congress entitled 'An Act better to provide for the supplies of the army of the United States and for the accountability of persons entrusted with the same...,'" it appoints Richard Cutts of Massachusetts as Superintendant General of Military Supplies. The document is signed by President Madison (the signature is light though legible), and also by James Monroe as Secretary of War (his signature is much stronger). This is the highest ranking appointment during the War of 1812 that we have seen, nor does a search of auction records reveal any others.

A Practical Treatise on the Law of Nations, Relative to the Legal

1812. Joseph Chitty on the Law of Nations Chitty, Joseph [1776-1841]. A Practical Treatise on the Law of Nations, Relative to the Legal Effect of War on the Commerce of Belligerents and Neutrals; And Orders in Council and Licences. London: Printed for W. Clarke and Sons, 1812. xii, 296 pp. Octavo (8-1/2"x 5-1/2"). Original publisher boards, rebacked retaining original spine and printed paper title label, untrimmed edges. Some rubbing and faint stains to boards, some abraded and somewhat darkened. Toning, occasional browning and foxing to text, internally clean. * Only edition. Chitty was one of the most wide-ranging and prolific legal writers of the nineteenth-century. This treatise and an edition of Beawes's Lex Mercatoria (1813) were his two contributions to international law. Marvin's Legal Bibliography (1847), though critical of the Practical Treatise, finds merit in its digest of Sir William Scott's judgments in prize cases (190). It is also interesting because it summarizes the British view of wartime commerce at the outbreak of the War of 1812, a point Chitty makes in the Preface.
