Anton Raphael Mengs 1728 - 1779, komplett in 2 Bänden.

EROTIC ALBUM: A Suite of Thirteen Erotic Woodblock Printed Prints.

      - [Japan n.d. 1800-1830's]. An accordion folding album, blue & gold floral pattern, silk brocade cloth covers, edges worn, 1 pastel-colored print, plus a complete suite of 12 color prints, album size 33.5 x 27.5 cm., gilt top & bottom edges. *** *** *** . . . A STUNNING EROTIC ALBUM BY THE MASTER . . The album is in its original and worn silk and gold brocade cloth and contains thirteen Oban [ca 38 x 24.5 cm] sized woodblock prints. . *** The first is a very early and most delicately colored pastel work and by far the most superior of the group. We estimate it to have been printed ca. 1778. It is finely drawn, with the most subtle and even faint pastel colors. His earliest works were often done in [Sumi outline] black & white, with out any color at all. As the technology and techniques of polychrome printing by woodblock improved, and grew in popularity, Utamaro also began to experiment with color. At first he experimented using the most subtle hint of color in shades of pastel, to slightly enhance his images. Utamaro did not want viewers to be distracted from the emotional and erotic subject, so kept he often kept his use of color to a minimum. . *** The first print clearly shows the beginnings of this concept to sparingly use color, as an after-thought for mild high- lighting. As an early work, Utamaro had yet to commit to the use of color. The balance of the suite containes some twelve later prints by him, done circa 1800-1806. This is composed of four prints with a matching border, eight others that match as a set. The whole work was likely assembled by a collector. . *** In the first series of four, Utamaro has now progressed and submitted to the popular trend of polychrome printing, but only using a few colors in pastel. The first four prints in the suite show conservative use of pastels, but left the human figures skin entirely uncolored. The second series begins with print five and shows again a bit later progres- sion of the artist's work. He begins a major change in his use of color. Now he has committed to the full use of color, employing a large number of vivid colors to enhance his work. . *** He has found that the use of pink on the genitals, facial lips and tongue are effective to show the true and real excitement of the moment. Utamaro knew that during sexual excitement, the lips of the vagina and as well as the penis would flush with pink, especially the head or glans penis area. . *** Being true to the original models, he employed these colors effectively. What makes this album special, is that it is a collection of Utamaro's works from his earliest period, the middle and later stage in his artistic development. One can compare the works and see how the artist progressed in his use of color, while keeping his drawing skills under the finest of control. . *** Each print shows a couple making love in various positions and forms. Mostly the lovers are clothed or partially clothed, while they share tender and private moments while making love. Some of the women are Joroh or prostitutes, elaborately clothed while their Kimono are urgently thrown open to reveal their genitals. A few show the woman nearly nude while succumbing to licentious pleasures. Completely nude figures engaged in love-making was not common in Japan, and they considered partially clothed figures to the most erotic of all. . *** THE ARTIST: Utamaro [1754-1806] was one of Japan's most celebrated and treasured artists of the late 18th century. His works are always elegant and finely drawn with the utmost skill. His style is unique. His studio name was Murasakiya [The Purple- shop], he lived in Edo [Old Tokyo], was influence by the famous Kitao Masanobu & Torii Kiyonaga, the major artists of the Primitive schools. He was a central figure in the Edo world of artist artists & writers, an Ukiyo-e painter and printmaker. He was actually arrested by the Shogunate government and imprisoned in 1804 for violating the laws on the prohibition against publishing

Manuscript notes on the history of Bristol made by a local man.

Eighteenth century antiquarianism in Bristol. An extensive manuscript begun in the 18th century by a local man gathering materials on the history of the city of Bristol. Quarto vellum bound book, front board detached, spine loose. The handwritten notes taking up around 360 numbered pages, almost all filled in. A very substantial volume with the name Jos[eph] Whittuck 1775 to front pastedown. Further - later - pencil annotations inside front board mention a 'Joseph Whittuck' living at 80, Castle Street, from the Bristol Directory of 1775. This seems to have been a middle class/tradesman's area. A second pencil annotation gives another 'Whittuck Gent.' [the same man, older?] living at 8 King's Square in 1827. The first Whittuck was a cooper. The second may have owned a pottery, or the cooper moved up in the world. Clearly, 'Mr Whittuck' had an antiquarian interest in the history of the city and must have spent a good deal of time in the city's archives copying out these entries, with the idea, perhaps of publishing a history. A 'Whittuck' merits a mention in the Bristol Memorialist, a locally published magazine in 1818 when he is described as the owner of a Roman coin. Mr Whittuck [of King's Square]was a subscriber to The Rev. Samuel Seyer's Memoirs Historical and Topographical and its Neighbourhood published in Bristol in 1821. To front endpaper are written the words 'At the close the character of the Rev J Tommas' referring to a handwritten poem pasted to rear of the book. Tommas was a Baptist minister in the Pithay [an old street in Bristol]. A Sketch of the Life of the late Rev. John Tommas pastor of the Baptist Church in the Pithay, Bristol appears in The Baptist Register Annual Register 3 [1798-1800] pp. 313-319. Tommmas was born in Skipton in Yorkshire in 1723/24 and left Anglicanism behind to become a Baptist. He died in 1800. He may have been a friend of Whittuck, and perhaps was also engaged in the field of antiquarianism. The entries run until 1805 then at page 247 return to the year 1565 and, turning back to that year in the first half of the volume a note appears giving later page references. I presume that Whittuck was filling in extra material left out or earlier overlooked? An entry for the year 1643 in the first half of the book mentions the Royalist plot initiated by Robert Yeomans to deliver the city into the hands of Prince Rupert and later at p. 306 this is gone into in greater detail quoting sources of the period, letters etc, including quoting from John Vicars' book Jehovah Jireh published in 1644. Perhaps these sources only came to light later, after Whittuck had made his initial researches. It looks like it may be a change in handwriting from p. 247, so Whittuck may have had a confederate in this venture. I imagine that much of the information would have been taken from the records that formed The Annals of Bristol [only published in the late 19th century]. There are interesting sidelights to the known history of the city throughout. For example an entry for 1786 mentions the demolition of the old Christ Church. An added note states that a medal was found under one of the arches bearing the words "Ave Maria plena Gloria". This church when first built is said to be first dedicated to the Virgin Mary of which this medal seems to be confirmation. Since the demolition of the church happened only a few years after these notes were started I guess that the author must have picked up this information first hand. A few entries from a period which the author must have known of, and perhaps even witnessed or heard of first hand; In 1774 the election of Edmund Burke and his fellow MP Henry Crugar is noted. Next day they were carried through the principal streets in chairs richly ornamented amidst an incredible number of people... An accident in March 1775 at Penpark Cavern is described in some detail when the Rev. Thomas Newnam fell to his death. The entry for 1777 is a long description of fires laid by the arsonist known as 'John the Painter' who was hanged at Portsmouth. 1780 and the anti Catholic Gordon riots in London sthreaten to spill over to Bristol but are prevented by the timely arrival of the militia. A description, too of the burning of an effigy of General Burgoyne [held responsible for the defeat at Saratoga] on Brandon Hill. 1784 and the general election, where according to the notes couples were married purely for their votes then, after the election seperating. 1789 is marked with a long entry on the local celebrations when the recovery of King George from his 'madness' is announced with bonfires in the city. During this period, the Irish Giant, [Charles] Byrne is mentioned and Hackney coaches are seen on the streets for the first time. The entries offer a wealth of detail on the history of the city at this time moving from the local and detailed to the larger context of the times. The volume, therefore, suggests an author [or authors] with a strong interest in the history of the city working on his researches in the city's archives. The first extensive history of Bristol was only authored by William Barrett in 1789 so when the man began his researches no public history of the city was available. Included are some loose ms papers within the book; a poem on the funeral of Lord Nelson which appears to be unrecorded; another, sentimental poem by a 'Mrs Mary Jackson', and a poem on the character of the aforementioned Baptist pastor, John Tommas from, it seems a former parishioner[?] at Gildersome in West Yorkshire. Another ms item is a comic poem written on a scrap of paper marked with the words 'Bath & Cheltenham Gazette June 10th 1823'. In the preface to his 'Memoirs of Bristol' 1822-25, Seyer speaks of "A number of MS Calendars or Chronicles.... evidently derived from more ancient copies, transcribed by various hands, having generally a great similarity, but many particular differences.... many have been destroyed, but probably 40 or 50 still remain, chiefly in families of long continuance in Bristol, of which about 20 have passed under my inspection...."

[SUITE OF TWELVE GOAUCHE PAINTINGS OF CHINESE ON PITH PAPER][Bound in Black on G

[Canton? ca.1800-1820, Lam-Qua?].Black lacquer, gold painted 12 fine gouache hand-drawn & colored paintings, 12.5 x 16.5 cm., very fine condition, each mounted in an album with old gold paper corners, on pith paper, excellent example. RARE ! *** *** A SUPERB SUITE OF TWELVE STUNNING COLOR PITH PAINTINGS ILLUSTRATING VARIOUS CHINESE IN ELABORATE COSTUME This is a charming suite of 12 lovely portraits of Chinese men, women and military men. THE PAINTED SUBJECTS: 1. An old sage holds a scroll of holy texts while he is seated, behind him stands a guard with a pole sword. 2. A young warrior holds a long axe ready for action. 3. A young lady a white porcelain teacup. 4. A warrior holds his halberd ready for action. 5. A fierce older warrior holds a sword and his shield. 6. A guard holds his long sword at the ready. 7. An elderly man strokes his long beard. 8. A young man takes a stroll holding a fan behind his back. 9. An elderly an holds two Burmese-green jade bracelets. 10. A man holds a feather fan. 11. A very old man holds his long sword. 12. A bearded man points with his hand toward the right. The twelve paintings are gently mounted to stiff black album pages with the old style "NuAce" photo mounting corners. There is no damage to the paintings with this technique. THE STUNNING GOLD OVER BLACK ILLUSTRATED LACQUER COVERS: This is a very unusual binding, hand-painted in gold lacquer over black lacquer background on wooden boards. The cover illustration shows five Chinese: The Lord & Master; his concubine; his son [Prince]; his retainer; and the maid. The Lord & master is seen seated before a tea service with three golden cups and a golden ceramic tea pot. The Lord & Master reaches for the hand of his fair and very young concubine who holds a fan. The tea service is clearly for three people: The Lord & Master, his son, the Prince and the concubine. The retainer is seated just behind the Lord & Master's right side, showing proper respect by looking at the floor. The young Prince [the son] is seated before his father and looks at the concubine. At the rear is the maid, waiting for order. She puts her right hand on the adjacent table, holding a tray. The work has an elaborate and stunning border. In the upper corners are two stunning illustrations: the upper left sows the Golden Dragon, in the upper right is the Phoenix. At the left center margin is a golden Peacock. The margin-borders are elaborately done with differing traditional Chinese patterns and designs. A most stunning view inside of the The back is plain black lacquer. The spine is black leather, with period Chinese swastika design white over black end papers. Some of the old glue is showing through the very thin tissue endpapers, else very solid, with heavy black pages. CONDITION OF THE GOLD AND BLACK LACQUER COVERS: The covers are in exceptionally good condition. There are two minor spots: one ca. 1.5 cm spot at the son's midsection, and another black spot .05 cm just below his robe. There is the very small amount of occasional and barely visible usual and very minor mild scuffing, with a minor discoloration of the face of the maid. There is a bit of 'crackle' to the black lacquer which is normal for a piece 200 + years old. Else this is in very nice condition. CONDITION OF THE PAINTINGS: These are exceptionally bright and clean drawings, lightly mounted on a now browned backing paper, with blue-glossy patterned paper borders. Numbers: 1 has a tiny 1.5 & .5 cm. small split at bottom left, this does not affect the painting. 2 has the lower portion folded in the process of paper-making which is normal variation and does not detract. 5 has a tiny 1 cm. split at top in the margin, this does not affect the painting. 9 has a 7 cm. split from the elbow to the bottom of the work, apparently restored from the verso, minimal impact. 11 has a small 1 cm. scuff in the right margin, this does not affect the image. 12 has a similar but less obvious 1 cm. scuff in the right margin at the same place as #11, this does not affect the image. The balance i.e. numbers: 3,4,6,7,8,10 are without issues. OVERLY CRITICAL: We are commonly obsessive and overly critical about pointing out any and all defects. Please view the scans posted to our website. All in all, these look much better than the above description. Perfectly clean, no blemishes. NOTE: Typically "pith" paintings are prone to be very brittle and delicate. We are happy to state, this suite is exceptionally very solid and intact. The colors are brilliant, bright and stunningly fresh, without any fading or issues. They appear to have been properly cared for protected. These are in excellent "Collector's Condition." PAINTING QUALITY AND FRESH BRILLIANTLY COLORED: The paintings are meticulously executed, with fine detail painted a steady skilled hand. LAM-QUA, TING-QUA SCHOOLS: The works are done in the Canton style of Lam-Qua and his brother, Ting-qua. See link below. Ting-qua born ca. 1809; flourished 1840-70. He was the brother of Lam-Qua [1801-1860] and probably a close relation of Spoilum. Ting-qua's studio at 16 China Street, Guangzhou, was perhaps the most prolific source of Chinese export paintings of its time. Working in a manner influenced by Western artistic traditions, Ting-qua and the painters of his studio restricted themselves to gouache and water-colors, perhaps to avoid rivalry with Lam-qua's oil paintings. Their pictures, which were often sold in sets..." PITH PAPER: The paintings were done on pith paper. "Pith paper or rice paper," a misnomer as it is sometimes known, is made from the inner pith of the plant Tetrapanex papyrifera, which is a member of the Araliaceae family. The plant is a shrub native to Southern China and Taiwan. As well as a painting material, pith paper was used to make artificial flowers and surgical dressings." RARITY: Gouache pith paintings are now rare, most were damaged, cracked and brittle, rendering them useless. The few that survived are considered RARE and uncommon. The paintings were drawn with much skill and patience, and were for the most part drawn for and sold to foreigners in the treaty ports of China in the early 19th century. Drawn with a fine brush in vivid colors, the paintings depicted things that would fascinate foreigners, and encourage them to bring home as souvenirs. The current examples shows portraits of Chinese officials, guards, military men, as well as upper class citizens. Albums of pith paintings were typically issued in a suite of twelve.         Vom Inneren Bau der Knochen. Verdeutsch von T.G.A. Roose.

First German Edition of Srapa's treatise on the inner structure of bones.         Histoire naturelle des singes et des makis.

Paris Chez Desray An Huitieme 1800 - First edition. 2 volumes in 1, folio (52 x 34.5 cm). 63 copper engraved plates, including 61 printed in colour and finished by hand, contemporary veau blond gilt by Bozerian (signed at foot of spine), flat spine with monkey tools in compartments, all edges gilt, a fine copy. A fine fresh large paper copy in a handsome contemporary binding by Bozerian, of the earliest illustrated monograph on monkeys and Audebert's first original work. Published in 10 parts, the first two in February and July 1798, the remainder between January and October 1799. Audebert (1759-1800), was born at Rochefort. He studied painting and drawing at Paris. The present monograph, which divided the monkeys into six families, was the more impressive for employing a colour-printing process in which all the colours were printed from one plate and oil paint was substituted for gouache. In developing this new technique, his experience as a distinguished miniature painter was probably important. His interest turned to natural history after a meeting in 1789 with Gigot-d'Orex, a rich amateur collector of specimens. When Audebert died at the young age of 41, his reputation as an artist-naturalist was assured both by the present work and the later Oiseaux dorés (Paris, 1800-1802).         Camelus Dromedarius / Le Dromadaire

Paris: Printed by Langlois, 1800. Rare colour-printed copper engraving, on wove paper. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling, minor foxing, and a tiny nick at the edge of the right margin. A beautiful plate with stunning early colour, from Lacépède's "La Menagerie du Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle," an important scholarly work and one of the finest examples of eighteenth-century French natural history illustration.A professor of zoology at the Museum of Natural History, the French naturalist Bernard-Germain-Étienne Delaville, Comte de Lacépède (1756-1825) was a versatile and precocious scholar who published a number of books on zoology, physics, and music. He was greatly influenced by the pioneering naturalist Georges Louis Marie Leclerc, comte de Buffon, whom he succeeded as Intendant at the Jardin du Roi, which later became the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle in 1793. During his tenure, Lacépède completed a comprehensive study of amphibians and reptiles, Historie Naturelle des Quadrupèdes Ovipares et des Serpens , which was published as a supplement to Buffon's magnum opus on animal classification Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particulière .In 1800-1, he published the first edition of La Menagerie du Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle , a thorough survey of the various species of quadrupeds, reptiles and amphibians in the impressive collection of the Museum of Natural History. This magnificent work was comprised of descriptive text written by Lacépède and his colleague Georges L. C., Baron Cuvier (1769-1832) as well as a number of finely rendered plates after the most eminent natural history artists of the period, Nicolas Maréchal (1753-1803), Nicolas Huet (1770-1830) and Léon de Wailly (1801-1824). Painted from life on vellum, these beautifully detailed illustrations faithfully captured the appearance of the wondrous animals in the Paris menagerie.A pupil of J. G. Wille and C. N. Cochin, Simon Charles Miger was a royal academician and a talented engraver, who executed numerous portraits and natural history plates.Benezit, Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs , vol. 9, p. 611; Anker 275; BM(NH) IV, p. 1517; Brunet III, 725; Nissen ZBI 2353.

La Corveta Atrevida entre Bancas de nieve la Noche del 28, de Enero de 1794, estando en Latitud S. 52º 13' y Longitud 42º 7' Ocidental de Cadiz

One of the few available works depicting the five-year scientific expedition of Spanish naval officer Allesandro Malaspina. In that exploration Malaspina and Jose de Bustamente commanded two frigates of approximately 118 feet in length, the Descubierta and the Atrevida and departed from Cadiz, Spain on July 30, 1789. The expedition sailed through the Pacific Ocean, exploring and mapping much of the west coast of the Americas from Cape Horn to the Gulf of Alaska, crossing to Guam and the Philippines, and stopped in both New Zealand and Australia. The view shows the corvette Atrevida navigating between icebergs at night. The expedition carried aboard some of Spain's top scientists, as well as at least three artists: Brambila, Jose Guio, and Tomas de Suria. This intaglio plate shows the Atrevida among large ice flows. Map coordinates are based on a Prime Meridian in Cadiz, Spain but the the location is somewhere very near the Malvinas (Falkland Islands), and by the stated date of 1794 we know this was the second-to-last stop of the 62 month voyage. Last known sale of this engraving was in 1992 and no examples of the work are known for sale anywhere. Only two examples are found on the Internet, one at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London.

QIU YING BI MEI REN: QIU YING BRUSH PAINTING OF BEAUTIFUL WOWOMEN. Japanese Titl

      - [Japan ca. 1800-1810]. Hand scroll, silk brocade cloth, with ribbon tie, ivory clip, painted on fine hand-made crushed mica flecked Washi paper, giving a sparkling effect, very long: 27.5 x 6m.48 cm.,very clean, solid 21 color paintings. RARE! *** *** *** . . . YAMAKAWA'S TRIBUTE PAINTING TO . . . THE FAMOUS MING DYNASTY CHINESE PAINTER . . . CH'IU YING [QIU YING] [1494?-1522] . . . A STUNNING GOUACHE COLOR PAINTED CHINESE SCROLL . * WHO WAS YAMAKAWA SHUHO [SHUUHOO] [1898-1944]: . Was a well known Japanese painter, who specialized in birds and flowers under Ikegami Shuho [Shuuho], and from whom he derived his studio name. He also studied Bijinga [pictures of beautiful women] under Kaburagi Kiyokata. . There is a signature and four red cinnabar Hanko [seals or chops], two of which are small square shaped with Yamakawa's first name "Shu hoh" just left of his signature. Even though there is no last name indicated, these two Hanko match known seals he used. . A large square Hanko left of Yamakawa's seals, partially read: "NO ZO SHOI," meaning "Ex-libris" or a former owner's copy. The fourth seal at the lower right, is a large circle reading SHU-HOH. . There is not date anywhere or indication of a date on the painting. It is more than likely the work was done sometime after circa 1918 when he was twenty years old or older. . *** THE SUBJECT:. We know Yamakawa's appreciation and admiration of Ch'iu Ying is understandable. It would be entirely appropriate for artists to keep and refer to earlier Chinese and Japanese master's works, or even show respect by painting a 'tribute' inspired by an earlier or famous artist of the classic Ming and other dynasties. . The skill of the brush strokes, coloring and delicacy of the lines, the composition follows the Chinese style of earlier dynasties. . The work was expertly executed by a Japanese artist. In scene 18, there is a small note in Katakana, on the screen near the bronze gong, indicating the softness of the color. . Yamakawa admired beautiful ladies and painted them as well as created a large number of stunning color woodblock prints illustrating a variety of Japanese Bijin [beauties]. . *** THE CHINESE MASTER CH'IU YING [QIU YING]: Per the brushed title slip on the exterior of the scroll, and the first brushed name listed at the beginning of the scroll, there are Hanzi [Chinese characters] reading: "CH'IU YING" [QIU YING] the name of the original artist which inspired this Yamakawa artist to produce this tribute. . Continuing with the same brush and writing style below is also the brush-written name at the beginning of the scroll: "Shuuhoo Sei," followed by "Dai Jushi go" ["Number 40"]. The significance is moot, but can be a numbering system of chronological 'tributes' Yamakawa painted. . *** THE FOUR HANKO [Seals or chops]: There are a total of four red cinnabar Hanko found at the beginning of this scroll. There are two small square red cinnabar Hanko at the beginning, just left of the signature reading: "Shu hoh." . *** DATING: According to the kind of silk brocade binding and Washi [hand-made] paper, this painting is from the early part of the 20th century, circa 1908-1912. Most likely painted when Yamakawa was in his early twenties. Other examples of his paintings during this time frame have a similarities. . The work is painted on period Japanese Washi [hand-made] paper, with its distinctive mica-flecks. The use of mica on paper is a very special, seldom used. It takes far above average artistic skill and masterly technique to paint on this kind of specialty paper. In additions, mica-flecked paper is seldom used due its extravagant expense. The results of painting mica-flecked paper is that a subtle 'shimmering' comes through the gouache producing a lovely effect. . *** A NOTE ABOUT "TRIBUTE" PAINTINGS: Yamakawa was a known admirer of earlier Chinese and Japanese dynasty painters. His production of "tribute" paintings in the style of old master artists was a way for him to express hi

Ceiling frescoes depicting Aurora and Apollo. A pair.

circa 1800 - A pair of watercolours on vellum, after the baroque ceiling frescoes by Guido Reni in the Casino dell'Aurora of the Palazzo Pallavicini-Rospigliosi, one central panel of Aurora, the other of Aurora leading Apollo in his chariot, flanked by celestial nymphs and putti respectively; both surrounded by delicate polychrome panels of grotteschi, gryphons and putti, 51 x 30 cm approx., framed and glazed, overall dimensions 68 x 38 cm., evidence of a little neat restoration to borders. Studies by Bigatti after Guido Reni (1575-1642). Following the success of Reni's frescos for the Farnese Palace, his mythological subjects were much in demand and influenced many later artists. The present examples are copied from ceiling frescos composed around 1614 for what is considered to be his masterpiece, the Casino dell'Aurora at the Palazzo Pallavicini-Rospigliosi, the Borghese palace in Rome. They were commissioned by its first occupant, the famed art collector Cardinal Scipione Borghese. Aurora now had left her saffron bed, And beams of early light the heav'ns o'erspread, When, from a tow'r, the queen, with wakeful eyes, Saw day point upward from the rosy skies. (Virgil). The watercolours show Apollo in his Chariot preceded by Dawn (Aurora) bringing light to the world; and Aurora in her chariot. Aurora renews herself every morning and flies across the sky, announcing the arrival of the sun. Aurora was associated with sensuality and she appears most often in poetry with one of her mortal lovers. A myth taken from the Greek by Roman poets tells that one of her lovers was the prince of Troy, Tithonus. Tithonus was a mortal, and would therefore age and die. Wanting to be with her lover for all eternity, Aurora asked Jupiter to grant immortality to Tithonus. Jupiter granted her wish, but she failed to ask for eternal youth to accompany his immortality, and he became forever old. Aurora turned him into a grasshopper. Aurora's siblings were her brother, Sol (Sun) and sister, Luna (Moon).
