London, Hamilton, 1799 - LII, 539; VIII, 522 S. 1 Porträt. (Atlas:) 1 Kupfertitel und 69 (davon 31 Karten) teils gefalt. Kupfertafeln. Im Jahr der ersten englischen Ausgabe (erstmals auf Französisch in Paris 1797 erschienen). - Sabin 38961. Cox I, 67. Howes L 93. Forbes I, 309. - "La Pérouse`s expedition was one of the most important scientific explorations ever undertaken to the Pacific and the west coast of North America" (Hill Collection 972 zur EA). - "In 1783 the French government resolved to send an expedition to the Pacific to complete Captain James Cook`s unfinished work, and in particular to explore the passages in the Bering Sea, which had been a mystery to Europeans since the sixteenth century. King Louis XVI himself took a hand in drafting the plan and itinerary, a copy of which is in the Municipal Library at Rouen, France, and when La Pérouse was selected to lead the fleet gave him an audience before he sailed. In command of two ships, La Boussole and L`Astrolabe (Commandant de Langle), he left Brest on 1 August 1785 making for Brazil. Doubling Cape Horn he refitted in Chile, then sailed to the Sandwich Islands and thence to Alaska, where he turned south exploring and surveying the coast as far as California. After a short refit at Monterey, he sailed across the Pacific, discovered uncharted islands, and visited Macao and Manila. After six weeks reprovisioning and refreshing he left on 10 April 1787 to survey the coasts and territories north of Korea, which had been described and commented on by Christian missionaries. He sailed up the Gulf of Tartary, naming several points on both its shores and learned that Sakhalin was an island. In September he put in to Kamchatka to replenish his supplies. From there he dispatched an officer, Lesseps, overland to Paris with accounts of his discoveries, while he turned south making for New Holland. In December, at Tutuila, Samoa, which Bougainville had called the Navigator Islands when he explored them in 1768, natives suddenly attacked a party from L`Astrolabe seeking water and killed de Langle and eleven others. La Pérouse left without taking reprisals and sailed through the Pacific Islands to Norfolk Island and to Botany Bay. He was sighted off the coast there on 24 January 1788 but bad weather prevented his entering the bay for two days. By then Governor Arthur Phillip had sailed to Port Jackson, but John Hunter had remained with the Sirius and the transports, and assisted La Pérouse to anchor. He established a camp on the northern shore, now called after him, and maintained good relations with the English during his six-week stay. He sailed on 10 March and was not heard of again. His disappearance led the French government in 1791 to equip another expedition under Bruny d`Entrecasteaux to look for him, but the search was fruitless" (Australian Dictionary of Biography). - Die Text-Bde. leicht gebräunt und nur wenig fleckig.          The Life of Samuel Johnson, LL. D. Comprehending An Account of his Studies And Numerous Works, In Chronological Order; A Series of His Epistolary Correspondence And Conversations with Many Eminent Persons; And Various Original Pieces of his Composition, Never Before Published The Whole Exhibiting a View of Literature and Literary Men in Great-Britain, For Near Half a Century during which He Flourished. In Four Volumes.

London: Printed by H. Baldwin and Son for Charles Dilly 1799 - London: Printed by H. Baldwin and Son for Charles Dilly, 1799. First Malone edition, 4 volumes, 8vo. pp. xxxi, [1], 452; [2], 490; [2], 475; [2], 514; engraved frontispiece portrait by Baker after Reynolds, folding engraved facsimile of Johnson's handwriting, folding engraved Round Robin plate. Generally, a very good, sound copy in recent half calf, some pencil marks and annotation to the margins. James Boswell, 9th Laird of Auchinleck (29 October 1740 – 19 May 1795), was a Scottish biographer and diarist, born in Edinburgh. He is best known for the biography he wrote of one of his contemporaries, the English literary figure Samuel Johnson, which the modern Johnsonian critic Harold Bloom has said is the greatest biography written in the English language. Boswell's surname has passed into the English language as a term (Boswell, Boswellian, Boswellism) for a constant companion and observer, especially one who records those observations in print. In "A Scandal in Bohemia", Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's character Sherlock Holmes affectionately says of Dr. Watson, who narrates the tales, "I am lost without my Boswell."   Condition Report Externally Spine – good condition – titled in gilt on black labels. Recently rebound in quarter maroon calf and marbled boards, original endpapers and half-title present. Some occ. light foxing, one page has a close short tear to margin, not affecting text.          The School for Scandal. A Comedy

Dublin: J. Ewling, 1799. Later piracy. vi, 93, [3] pp. 8vo. Near contemporary three-quarter tan straight-grained morocco over paste boards, flat spine gilt with two cream morocco labels. Top outer corner of title-page repaired, circular stain to lower margin of title and following two leaves, some light foxing. Later piracy. vi, 93, [3] pp. 8vo. This Dublin piracy was long thought to be the first edition, and is recorded as such by Wise and Williams. Another Dublin piracy, printed in 1780 is now acknowledged as the first (cf. Nettleton & Case, British Dramatists, p. 941 & Rothschild 1845). R. Compten Rhodes, in his edition of the Plays and Poems of Sheridan ascribes a date of circa 1799 based on the use of the short "s" (cf. Rhodes, R.C. Plays & Poems of Richard Brinsley Sheridan, II, p. 171). The Ewling imprint is fictitious, as is, perhaps, the location of the printing. Sheridan's masterpiece was first performed 8 May 1777 on Drury Lane, running for twenty nights, and revived the next season for a further sixty-five performances. No authorized edition was printed in Sheridan's lifetime. This edition differs considerably from the author's manuscript and was possibly adapted from a performance. [Bound with:] OTWAY, Thomas.          Ticket. An ornate engraved invitation to the annual anniversary dinner' at the Assembly Room on Wednesday the 13th November. Dinner at 3 o'clock. Michael Castle, President'.

[Bristol]. [1799] - The year, venue, day, time and President's name have been entered by hand; some sl. marginal dusting, mounted on to later paper. 15 x 18.5cm. Edward Colston, 1636-1721, was born in Bristol. In a remarkable life he accumulated immense wealth as a merchant and subsequently used it on an unprecedented scale to found schools and to build almshouses for the 'poor and infirm' of Bristol. Colston's 'example of Christian liberality' impressed his friends and colleagues so deeply that they formed the Colston Societies - the Grateful, Dolphin and Anchor Societies - to perpetuate his memory and to keep active his spirit of generosity and liberality. They all use the Dolphin emblem, said to have originated from a dolphin which lodges itself in the damaged hull of one of Colston's ships, thus saving it from sinking. The Anchor Society was formed in 1769 when it held a dinner at the Three Tuns, a tavern on the site of the present Corn Exchange in the centre of the medieval quarter of Bristol when 22 members were present. At this dinner the President, Gilbert Davies, took up a collection to benefit the poor and elderly in Bristol. Since then there is an unbroken record of Presidents' annual appointments and personal collections. Michael Castle's annual collection totalled £336.00, the second highest amount in the 18th century. Paris, Buisson, 1799. Hardcover. Very good. Tree 8vo volumes plus one 4to atlas volume. Atlas volume is illustrated with 44 engraved plates and maps. VIII+410 ; 440 ; 506 pages. Contemporary full mottled calf with gilt –bordered covers and decorative spines. Paris, Buisson, 1799 (VII). Overrall a good set of this important book. Stedman vividly describes the natural surroungings of Suriname as well as the brutal conditions endured by slaves. It would become an influential work for the early abolitionists. Very nice copy.          Das Labyrinth oder Der Kampf mit den Elementen, (Zweyter Theil der Zauberfloete.)... Klavier Auszug von Joh: Henneberg... No. 1219. Preis f 10 _ „ [Piano-vocal score]

Offenbach a/M: Johann André [PN 1219], 1799. An early edition. Rare. Matthäus, p. 365. RISM W1342. Cf. BUC p. 1085 and Hirsch IV 1306. Das Labyrinth was first performed in Vienna at the Freihaus-Theater auf der Wieden on June 12, 1798. "Among the numerous sequels to Die Zauberflöte that appeared in the 1790s, this work served as the official 'second part' to Mozart's opera, [Emanuel] Schikaneder himself providing the libretto and producing the opera." Linda Tyler in Grove Music Online. "[Winter's] importance lies in the skill with which he fused his various stylistic ingredients...There are constant reminders of Mozart, and in the choruses Gluck's idiom is found alongside features of the German, Italian and French operatic traditions. But everything is held together by the consistently attractive melodic style that Winter's long experience had taught him, whether he was writing in a pathetic, aria-like vein or in a songlike popular manner. Increasingly he wrote large-scale, through-composed complexes of scenes in a bold, chromatic harmonic style, and with a fine sense of sonority that depends for its effect on varied instrumentation and dynamic contrast. In these respects Winter, the follower of Mozart, heralds the beginnings of German Romantic opera." Anna Amalie Abert and Paul Corneilson in Grove Music Online.. Oblong folio. Contemporary light brown paper boards with the printed label of Nürnberg music sellers Riegel and Wiessner with manuscript titling to upper. 1f.          Das Labyrinth oder Der Kampf mit den Elementen, (Zweyter Theil der Zauberfloete.)... Klavier Auszug von Joh: Henneberg... No. 1219. Preis f 10 _ ? [Piano-vocal score]

1f. (recto title, verso blank), 3-193, [i] (blank) pp. Engraved. Boards worn and detached; spine lacking. Minor foxing and soiling.

The Naval Chronicle, Vol I - Vol XL.

London: Bunney & Gold; Joyce Gold, 1799-1818. sep 22 2017. Various paginations, about 20,000 pp. in total. b/w engraved portraits, views, vignettes and maps, some folding. The Naval Chronicle is THE source for contemporary reports of the affairs of the Royal Navy during the period from the Napoleonic Wars to the War of 1812. It was published in London twice a year between 1799 and 1818. First-person accounts were contributed by officers as illustrious as Nelson, and biographies of fascinating characters like Cochrane were a staple. In addition the thousands of pages of this journal contain a wealth of historical nuggets and recondite facts. Typical issues featured lists of vessels captured and wrecked, promotions, accounts of battles, biographical sketches, articles on technological advances, and tidbits of naval gossip, as well as copper engraved portraits of officers, views of foreign ports, and charts of harbors and battles. It was a major source for Patrick O'Brian in writing his Aubrey-Maturin series. This is a complete set, bound in worn calf over marbled boards. A couple of boards are detached but present. However, the texts are in excellent condition, untrimmed, with many of the volumes partially or entirely unopened. Plates and maps in this set correspond to the lists of plates bound in each volume - with a single exception. Plate two in Vol. 29, Fort Cornwallis, is lacking. In total, there are 415 (of 416) copper engraved portraits and views, 88 maps and charts (eight folding), and over 60 wood engraved vignettes after drawings by artists such as Pocock. Plates and text are clean, Forty volumes, complete.

Lacombe, 388.

Panorama, Leicester Square. Short account of lord nelson's defeat of the french at the nile

[London]: J. Adlard, Printer, [1799]. Single leaf broadside. With elaborate circular woodcut naval design surrounding a central narrative of the battle. Uncut. Folded horizontally and vertically, some creasing, small central hole and closed tear (both without loss). With manuscript scoring through the word Margate. A rare survival of an advertisement for the 1799 Barker representation of the Battle of the Nile, a celebration of that most decisive of British eighteenth-century Naval engagement which saw Nelson defeat the French mediterranean Fleet and frustrate Napoleon's extra-European ambitions at Aboukir Bay, near Alexandria, in August 1798. The notion of producing 360-degree landscape panoramas struck Irishman Robert Barker (1739-1806) during a walk on Calton Hill, Edinburgh. Various technical issues, such as the curvature of straight lines when drawings were presented in a circle, were solved in his patented architectural design entitled 'Contrivance or apparatus called "La Nature a Coup d'Oeil" for displaying Views of Nature at large', which involved various novel design features to distract from the edges of the work and so immerse spectators in the spectacle. His innovation in landscape painting drew crowds on tour and was, by 1793, coined as a 'panorama' and firmly ensconced within a bespoke rotunda of the same name on Leicester Square, London. The aftermath of the 1798 victory and the reputation which it secured the Navy in general and Nelson in particular proved a perfect topic for Barker, who described the atmospheric scene in contemporary newspaper reports: 'though seen by daylight, appears as in the action at 10 at night, the whole seeming lighted only by the fire from the ships, and those blown up and burning, producing an effect of destruction seldom seen by the oldest seaman'. ESTC locates only four copies in British libraries (BL, Bedfordshire Record Office, Oxford, Reading) and just two in North America (Harvard and Yale). ESTC T155139/T48072.. Dimensions: 330 x 410mm.

A few pages little browned, occasional minor spotting, light dampstaining to top blank margin of a few gatherings, otherwise quite crisp and clean. A very fine set, mostly in original condition, rarely found as complete as here with all the supplements present. ---- Dibner, Heralds of Science 14; Grolier/Horblit 63; PMM 252; Sparrow, Milestones of Science 125; Norman 1277; Roberts-Trent, p.197. LAPLACE'S FUNDAMENTAL WORK ON CELESTIAL MECHANICS. FIRST EDITIONS OF ALL PARTS, with the first two volumes Ia and IIa in FIRST ISSUE and bound around 1800 in fine calf. Volumes III to V together with the 2nd edition of volumes Ib and IIb form a uniform set as issued. Published over a period of 27 years, Laplace's monumental work codified and developed the theories and achievements of Newton, Euler, d'Alembert and his contemporary Lagrange. In the tradition of Newton's Principia, Laplace "applied his analytical mathematical theories to celestial bodies and concluded that the apparent changes in the motion of planets and their satellites are changes of long periods, and that the solar system is in all probability very stable" (Dibner 14). Newton remained uncertain with respect to the continuity of our solar system. In this work, Laplace also offered explanations unsolved by his predecessors and contemporaries. He "offered a brilliant explanation of the secular inequalities of the mean motion of the moon about the earth - a problem which Euler and Lagrange had failed to solve. He proved that these irregularities are connected with certain solar actions and changes in the orbit of the earth. He also investigated the theory of the tides and calculated from them the mass of the moon" (PMM 252). The first four volumes of the work appeared from 1799 through 1805, and contain the laws of mechanics for their application to the motions and figures of the heavenly bodies. The final parts of the fourth volume and the entire fifth volume really constitute a separate work and contain important material on physics not already included in the original sequence. Our set contains the first state title-pages in the first two volumes Ia and IIa, with French Republican dates only and without the added Berlin imprint (printed for European distribution). Only few sets have survived in its original wrappers. - Visit our website for additional information and images. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

PROCEEDINGS ON THE IMPEACHMENT OF WILLIAM BLOUNT, A SENATOR OF THE UNITED STATES FROM TENNESSEE, FOR HIGH CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS.

Philadelphia. 1799. - 102pp. Half morocco and cloth boards, spine stamped in gilt. Titlepage mounted on tissue, with interior tear at lower left. Several leaves with small tears, one leaf with marginal section torn away, lower corner of outer leaf repaired, slightly affecting text. Good. Official proceedings of the trial of Tennessee senator William Blount, the first United States federal official against whom impeachment charges were brought. Blount was heavily involved in land speculation in the South and feared that France would gain control of the Mississippi River. He settled into a conspiracy in which England would seize Louisiana and Florida, and his investments would be protected. The Senate voted to expel Blount, and the House brought impeachment proceedings against him, which were dismissed for lack of jurisdiction. "The Blount trial is an important record of one of the chief conspiracies seeking to carve an empire out of the Spanish border lands in the uncertain era at the end of the 18th century. It set the stage for other shady dealings, culminating in the Burr Conspiracy after the Lousiana Purchase" - Reese. HOWES B548, "aa." SERVIES 732. COHEN 14450. EVANS 36561. SABIN 6002.
