Plate 56: figures falling through air, including satyr; from a bound album of the second edition impressions. 1799 Etching and burnished aquatint. From the second edition of twelve of the so-called "Los Caprichos" series, edited by the Madrid Calcografia. A very good impression, with good contrast, printed on contemporary paper, customary margins, in very good conditions. The series called Los Caprichos, consists of eighty etchings. This first edition of 1799, the only one not to be published posthumously, is imprinted on soft laid pape. Cured in phase edition by the same artist, the series was marketed and before long withdrawn from the market. In fact, because of the many subjects that mocked the Spanish society of the century, Goya suffered censorship. John Fonblanque
London: W Clarke and Son, 1799. Volume Two of Fonblanque's work: bookplate of Martin Van Buren inside front under bookplate of W. Scott Alexander: some marginalia. Volume two of John Fonblanque's "A Treatise of Equity" from the Library of Martin Van Buren and later, of W. Alexander Scott. John Anthony Fonblanque was an English barrister whose extensive notes formed the body of this work, adding to the work attributed to Henry Ballow (Ballewe). Originally published in 1737, this is volume two of the second edition. Five editions were published with the last done in 1820. Fonblanque added "marginal references and notes". Inside the front is a bookplate attributed to Martin Van Buren, eighth president of the United States. He began studying law with Peter Sylvester in 1796 when he was 14; this was possibly one of his text books as the dates coincide. There is extensive marginalia hand written throughout citing precedents (see photos): the notes could be written by Van Buren, notations made by his instructors or by later owner. The handwriting is legible and clear. Above this bookplate is the plate of Walter Scott Alexander, of McConnellsburg, Pennsylvania, a lawyer who served as district attorney for Fulton Country; prior to that he served in the Pennsylvania State Senate. Again, there is some marginalia (beyond the printed notes of Fonblanque) written in ink on several pages. We cannot ascertain whether the handwriting is that of Van Buren or Scott. Very Good Condition: 8vo: full leather with ridged and banded spine: leather is faded and a little chipped with crack at hinges … [Click Below for Full Description]

Johann Christian Stahlschmidt
Nuremberg: Raw'schen, 1799. "A Pilgrimage by Sea and Land": very good with occasional poorly cut page and foxing. Johann Christian Stahlschmidt left home at nineteen because his father had forbidden home to read Jacob Boehme's "The Way to Christ". Stahlschmidt went to Amsterdam, where Boehme's work had been published but could find no work so he went to sea, traveling to Southeast Asia, India and China. He later lived as a preacher in North America and become friends with German mystic and hymn-writer Gerard Teersteegen. He was considered a "radical Pietist" strongly influenced by the work of Boehme, crediting it with keeping him protected from the temptations of life on board ship as he traveled. His book, "A Pilgrimage on Sea and Land," became a bestseller, translated into Dutch and English. Good Condition: 12mo: (6 3/4" x 4 1/4"): brown cloth with cracked hinges, front and rear: scuffed head and bent tail: scuffed corners with exposed boards, some slightly bent: foxing throughout with slight browning of paper due to age: occasional spot; occasional poorly trimmed page: "Die Pilgerreise zu Wasserstein und zu Lande, Oder Denkwurdigkeiten der gottlichen Gnadenfuhrung und Fursehung in dem Leben eines Christen, der Solche, auch besonders in seinen Reisen in Alle vier Haupttheile der Erde reichlich an such erfahren hat. von ihm selbst beschrieben in Breifen en Einen seiner Christlichen Mitbruder in den Jahren 1797 und 1798": Johann Christian Stahlschmidt: Nuremberg: Raw'schen Buchhandlung: 1799 RAREE1799AOQA. On December 30, 1799, Virginia Congressman and future Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall recommended to Congress that they observe February 22, 1800, what would have been Washington's sixty-ninth birthday, as a national day of mourning. The House of Representatives passed the resolution the same day, and the Senate passed it the next day. Contemporary marbled green boards with 2 red gilt lettered labels. A fine, uncut and unusually fresh copy of the first (and only) edition of this monumental flora of Hungary and adjacent territories, including Croatia, with splendid plates in the Viennese 'Jacquin' style. The text is by Paul Kitaibel (1757-1817), professor of botany at the University of Pest. 'He spent much of his career roaming Hungary and collecting botanical, zoological, and mineralogical specimens as well as folklore. His collections of botanical and mineralogical specimens formed the basis for the natural history collection in the Hungarian National Museum' (Johnston). The work was financed by Count Franz Waldstein (1759-1823), an Austrian military leader who fought against the Turks and North African states as a Maltese knight and in the Austrian-Turkish war and the Prussian campaign. From 1789 he devoted himself to botany, travelling with Kitaibel through Hungary collecting plants, interspersed with military service. His herbarium is in Prague. The aquatint view is signed by Hirscher. The plates are engraved by Karl Schutz after drawings by his son Johann. Paris: Jean-Baptiste Salaville. [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris: Jean-Baptiste Salaville. [Click Below for Full Description]

SERINGAPATAM.
Calcutta: Printed at the Honorable Company's Press, 1799. Folio (335 x 240 mm), xx, [2], 195, [1]pp., English and French texts — part of the book being printed in parallel columns, text bright and clean, uncut and partly unopened, preserved in a cloth folder which is dampstained but doesn't effect the contents within. Tipu, having been driven into Seringapatam and made peace with the British in 1792, carried on secret correspondence with the French government. When Napoleon invaded Egypt in 1798, the possibility of a French expedition to reinforce Tipu at Mysore seemed inevitable. In anticipation of an attack, British forces invaded Mysore which culminated in the defeat and death of Tipu at Seringapatam. "Immediately after Tipu's death, the East India Company orchestrated a propaganda campaign to justify its invasion of Mysore. It added a new layer to its traditional image of Tipu as a fundamentalist despot, presenting him as a collaborator in a Jacobin plot to destabilise legitimate governments throughout the world. In both Kolkata and London, the Company published a series of documents that it claimed were the 'proceedings of a Jacobin Club' founded by Ripaud in the spring of 1797. The documents may well have been forgeries created by the East India Company, but even if they were authentic, their content would hardly prove the British case. The speeches purportedly made by Ripaud never mention Jacobinism in them: the word 'Jacobin' was inserted by the editors on the title page of the collection. The proceedings describe an assembly of a few-dozen French mercenaries sweari … [Click Below for Full Description]

From the second edition of twelve of the so-called ""Los Caprichos"" series, edited by the Madrid Calcografia. Jean-Baptiste Salaville
Paris: Jean-Baptiste Salaville. [Click Below for Full Description]
