[LANGENDIJK, JAN ANTHONIE].
colour drawing of the transport of Russian and British prisoners-of-war in the aftermath of the Anglo-Russian invasion of Holland in 1799. As part of the War of the Second Coalition, an expeditionary force of British and Russian troops invaded North Holland in the Batavian Republic, the Dutch state established by and allied with the French Republic. After 5 weeks of fighting against a combined army of Batavian and French forces, the badly supplied Anglo-Russian army capitulated and was able to negotiate a strategic withdrawal and the exchange of prisoners-of-war.Together with his father Dirk (1748-1805), Jan Anthonie Langendijk visited the battlefield a few days before the final retreat of the Anglo-Russian troops, as well as other parts of the country where the effects of the campaign were visible, either through the mobilisation of the armies or the presence of prisoners-of-war. Both artists produced drawings of battles fought during the campaign (at which they had not been present), as well as scenes of the aftermath (at which they might have been present). Several of these were reproduced as engravings. The current drawing shows the transport of British (in red coats) and Russian (in green coats and wearing mitre caps) prisoners, escorted by Batavian and French troops. During the campaign, the prisoners were interned in various Dutch cities, even as far from the battlefield as Den Bosch, but most of them were exchanged for Dutch and French prisoners immediately after the hostilities ended. Possibly, the drawing shows the prisoners on their way to be exchanged. In comparis … [Click Below for Full Description]

KING, Edward
London: Printed by W. Bulmer & Co., for G. Nicol, 1799. First edition, 4 volumes, folio. 167 plates, a number folding and a couple hand coloured. Marbled endpapers, armorial bookplates of Charles Edward Keyser, old bookseller's description of this work pasted into the front of volume I, old damp stain to the upper margin of the plates, just affecting the image in many cases. 19th century half morocco, a little rubbed, small puncture to the spine of volume IV, overall a well preserved set. "The book is typical of King's somewhat idiosyncratic approach to antiquarian studies but nevertheless makes a strong case for architectural history and the close analysis of form and style. King argued that antiquarianism was a science and that antiquarian research should therefore be conducted in accordance with scientific models of measurement and comparison rather than being concerned with picturesque views. Though many of his contemporaries were contemptuous. [it] was widely cited." (ODNB). Charles Keyser (1847-1929), expert on church architecture and president of the British Archaeological Association. LAWRENCE, Henry Montgomery.
[IV], [III], 275 pp.First edition of one of the first titles published by the Gazette Press in Delhi and printed by Kunniah Hall. The content is a collection of articles that were previously published in the Delhi Gazette, written by Brigadier-General Sir Henry Montgomery Lawrence. He was an advocate for the independence of Punjab and died while defending that in Lucknow, earning the nickname "Lawrence of Lucknow". The book offers a wealth of information on the Punjabs in the form of fictionalised memoirs of Colonel Bellasis, providing many hardly known details about the region and people to the Western reader. Therefore it is of great importance. The present first edition is very rare, WorldCat only offers 3 copies worldwide and we traced 2 more copies in Oxford and the British Library. From the library of Edward Thornton (1799-1875), with his owner's inscription on the front paste-down. Thornton was East India House Officer and author of The History of the British Empire in India (1842). Spine restored with the original spine label laid onto backstrip. Covers slightly rubbed. Otherwise in very good condition.l WorldCat (3 copies); for the author: Riddick p. 211.

XII, 120 pp.Rare first and only edition of a work on the Cinchona plant by Theodoor Daniël Vrijdag Zijnen (1799-1863). The majority of the text deals with the trade in Cinchona bark, explaining how to distinguish real Cinchona plants and barks from fakes, either from very similar looking species or imitation bark that was offered for sale. Vrijdag Zijnen describes the physical and chemical characteristics of the Cinchona species included in the Pharmacopoea Belgica, which had appeared in 1823.Binding slightly rubbed along the extremities, spine very slightly damaged at the head and foot, otherwise in very good condition.l Bradley III, p. 724; NCC (6 copies); WorldCat (1 additional copy).

By order of the General Court in London all papers relating to illicit trade to and from India had to be published in 1799, which resulted in the publication of the present volume. All shipping carried out under other flags than the British was considered illicit. The text provides detailed information about European (Dutch, Danish, Swedish and German) shippers and their cargo intended for India. Although the 10 folding tables are not numbered, they fill the 20-page gap in the pagination (pp. 113-132), and the single leaf between pages 394 and 457 is labelled “395-456” on the recto and is blank on the verso. London: Printed by C. Whittingham for H. D. Symonds and sold by C. Geisweiler A. Dulau and Co. J. de Boffe Boosey Bell and Bradfute, Edinburgh; and Archer, Dublin, 1799. Rare first edition of a popular German grammar, which had reached a fifth edition by 1817. The Reverend William Render (born Wilhelm) ‘was a native of Germany, probably brought up in or near Heppenheim, south of Darmstadt. Nothing is known of his parents. He attended Giessen University, and was ordained to the Lutheran ministry Render went to England about 1790 and settled in London. He taught German and other languages in several distinguished families. Later in the 1790s he also became teacher of German at Cambridge, Oxford, and Edinburgh’ (Oxford DNB), and translated various works of German literature (Kotzebue, Schiller, Goethe) into English. ‘The growth in prestige of German was very rapid from 1774 onwards – something which is documented by the steep increase in the reception of German literature in England but so too does [a] catalogue for learners of German by a certain Reverend William Render’ (McLelland, p. 65), the unpaginated four-page section at the end of the present work. ‘Like Wendeborn’s, Render’s grammar falls clearly into the group of those teaching German not for its practical utility, but for its intellectual interest. Lamenting in his dedication to his royal patron Prince Frederick (Duke of York and second son of George III), that “hitherto there has been no complete practical German grammar published in this kingdom,” Render continued that “This is the more to be wondered at when it i … [Click Below for Full Description]

Haydn, Joseph. (1732-1809)
T. Mollo, Vienna, 1799. Oblong quarto, 129 pp. First edition of "The Creation," preceding Haydn's authorized editions of the score by one year, fully engraved. [PN] 120. Text in German. Bound in brown marbled boards with autograph title to front, ownership signature to ffe, printed price lr of title enhanced with contemporary ink, else fine throughout. Hoboken xxi.2, 41. RISM, H4634. Fuld, 271. Weinmann (Mollo), 35. The first edition of the vocal score of Haydn's greatest oratorio was this unauthorized publication, predating the composer's own editions of the full score and the vocal score by one year. One of the highpoints of the Western musical canon, the Oratorio with a libretto by Gottfried von Swieten, was recognized from its earliest performances as a masterwork of the first order (see New Grove, 8: 346, 347, 358). First performed at the Palais Schwarzenburg in Vienna on April 29th and 30th, 1798, though not performed publicly until the following year, when it was heard at the Burghteater in Vienna on March 19th. "There is hardly any doubt in the mind of the average music-lover that Haydn's Oratorio The Creation is, tutto sommato, his greatest single accomplishment, and certainly ranks as one of the greatest products of any eighteenth-century mind. It occupies a central position in choral literature and its composition and first performances were the dominant features of Haydn's life in the late 1890s." XVI, 339; VII, 327 [1]; VIII, 351 [1]; VIII, 308 pp. First Dutch edition of John Gabriel Stedman's famous narrative, detailing the abuse of slaves in Dutch Surinam and arguing for the abolition of slavery, translated from the original English edition published at London in 1796. Stedman (1744-1797), who took part in the punitive expedition sent by the Dutch Republic to subdue the revolt of African-American slaves in Surinam, travelled through the country from 1772 to 1777. He possessed not only a keen mind and eye for the geography, politics and natural history of the country, but also for its economic and social conditions. Most impressive, however, and very modern are his vivid descriptions of the brutal treatment of the slaves and his enlightened reflections on the moral perversions of the slave owners, leading him to pronounce the strongest possible indictment against slavery. Good set of a rare edition. Corners bumped. Tiele 1046; cf. Muller 1489 (ed. of 1801); Sabin 91078 (citing Muller without having seen a copy).

XX, 234 pp. Rare first bilingual edition of Dikru ál-ándalus; ta'lïfu s'arïf ál-'idrïs written by Muhammad al-Idrisi (also known as Xerif Aledris, 1100-1165), an Arab geographer and cartographer. This 12th century work is an extensive geographic treatise on Spain and Andalusia. Although not the first edition of the 12th-century work, it is the first bilingual edition in Spanish and Arabic. José Antonio Conde (1766-1820), a Spanish orientalist and historian of the Al-Andalus period (711-1492), came due to his background in contact with the writings of al-Sharif al-Adrisi and translated his description of Spain into Spanish. In this edition, the original Arabic text from al-Sharif al-Adrisi runs parallel to Condes translation. Conde also extended the Descripcion de España de Xerif Aledris with more than 100 pages of annotations. With an owner's inscription in ink from 1866 on the first endleaf. 4to. With 1 folding table and 10 hand-coloured engraved plates of insects in volume 1 and with 12 hand-coloured engraved plates of insects (including butterflies) in volume 2, both volumes with woodcut head- and tailpieces. Contemporary sheepskin, marbled sides, gold-tooled spine. [4], XXVIII, 556; [4], 744 pp. Third edition of an entomological work by the French pharmacist and entomologist Etienne Louis Geoffroy (1727-1810) on insects that live in the Paris area, as the title of the first edition (1762) mentions. It is important for the history of entomology, because Geoffroy relies on new criteria for the classification of the insects. This attracted the attention of Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778), who often quoted Geoffrey in his studies. Although the beautifully hand-coloured plates of the Histoire abrégée des insectes (1762) illustrate many insects, including butterflies, wasps and mosquitos, the numbers of images on the 22 plates reflects Geoffroys special devotion to the study of beetles. His book can nevertheless be regarded as a benchmark in the classification of insects in general. Each volume with an unidentified bookplate and bookplate of the British entomologist Lionel George Higgins (1891-1985) on the front pastedown. Calcutta Printed at the Honorable Company's Press, 1799. Folio, 30 x 23 cm., pp.xx, [2], 195, [1]. Bound in 19th-century quarter calf, boards, spine neatly repaired. Contemporary ownership inscriptions of "H. Russell" and "C. Sutherland" to title, both cancelled. An extraordinary collection of French and Persian documents, seized by British forces after the defeat of Tipu Sultan and capture of Seringapatam in May of 1799, the conclusion of the Anglo-Mysore wars. The documents were published shortly afterwards in two separate English translations at the command of the Governor-General, Arthur Wellesley, presumably to justify his decision to invade Mysore, and expose the perfidy of Tipu Sultan. The British invasion was prompted, in large part, by fear that the French invasion of Egypt in 1798 would permit direct French military support to Mysore; in the event, French assistance was restricted to a call for volunteers issued by the governor of Mauritius, and a small number of French advisers at Tipu's court. The first work contains a substantial selection from Tipu's diplomatic correspondence with the French, other Indian rulers, the Ottoman Sultan Selim III, and the British authorities, spanning more than a decade. The second purports to contain the constitution and minutes of a revolutionary Jacobin club founded at Seringapatam in 1797 by fifty-nine Frenchmen in Tipu's employment: "the French citizens under the orders of citizen Dompard, in the pay of citizen Tipu, the victorious, the ally of the French Republic."
