Tour of the Grand Junction, Illustrated in a Series of Engravings; With an Historical and Topographical Description of those Parts of the Counties of Middlesex, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, and Northamptonshire, Through which the Canal passes

Printed for J. Hassell. Printed for J. Hassell. First edition.. Binding slightly rubbed; fine copy.. Abbey, Scenery, 30; Tooley, page 139. 8vo, contemporary olive-green morocco, gilt rules, decorations and lettering, a.e.g. Twenty-four hand-colored aquatint plates drawn and engraved by Hassell. The Grand Junction Canal was designed to facilitate water transport from Oxford Canal to London, in place of the uncertain Thames River. The canal was opened in 1800 and pretty well completed in 1805, and its 93 miles of waterway, with two long tunnels, did greatly improve cargo shipping. It is now, like all the canals of England, used almost entirely for pleasure cruising. John Hassell (died 1825) wrote and illustrated numerous art-instruction and topographical works, of which this is one of the most appealing, due to the beauty of the countryside through which the canal passed. In his Preface Hassell declares that the Grand Junction "embraces a variety far exceeding that afforded by many rivers, as combining all the beauties of landscape--the elegance and splendor of the mansion and the villa--and the venerable remains of antiquity.

        Camelus Dromedarius / Le Dromadaire

      - Paris: Printed by Langlois, circa 1800-1. Rare colour-printed copper engraving, on wove paper. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling, minor foxing, and a tiny nick at the edge of the right margin. 11 5/8 x 16 1/8 inches. 12 7/8 x 20 1/4 inches. A beautiful plate with stunning early colour, from Lacépède's "La Menagerie du Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle," an important scholarly work and one of the finest examples of eighteenth-century French natural history illustration. A professor of zoology at the Museum of Natural History, the French naturalist Bernard-Germain-Étienne Delaville, Comte de Lacépède (1756- 1825) was a versatile and precocious scholar who published a number of books on zoology, physics, and music. He was greatly influenced by the pioneering naturalist Georges Louis Marie Leclerc, comte de Buffon, whom he succeeded as Intendant at the Jardin du Roi, which later became the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle in 1793. During his tenure, Lacépède completed a comprehensive study of amphibians and reptiles, Historie Naturelle des Quadrupèdes Ovipares et des Serpens, which was published as a supplement to Buffon's magnum opus on animal classification Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particulière. In 1800-1, he published the first edition of La Menagerie du Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle, a thorough survey of the various species of quadrupeds, reptiles and amphibians in the impressive collection of the Museum of Natural History. This magnificent work was comprised of descriptive text written by Lacépède and his colleague Georges L. C., Baron Cuvier (1769-1832) as well as a number of finely rendered plates after the most eminent natural history artists of the period, Nicolas Maréchal (1753-1803), Nicolas Huet (1770-1830) and Léon de Wailly (1801-1824). Painted from life on vellum, these beautifully detailed illustrations faithfully captured the appearance of the wondrous animals in the Paris menagerie. A pupil of J. G. Wille and C. N. Cochin, Simon Charles Miger was a royal academician and a talented engraver, who executed numerous portraits and natural history plates.

Garrison & Morton, 597 : "When Volta questioned the validity of experiments claiming to show responsiveness of an ex vitro heart, devoid of blood flow and nervous connections, Bichat obtained permission to experiment upon the freshly killed bodies of those guillotined during the french Revolution. His trials on both laboratory animals and human cadavers led him to conclude that cardiac excitation by electricity would occur only when the organ was stimulated by direct contact." ; Lesch, Science and medicine in France : the emergence of experimental physiology, 1790-1855, pp. 50-79 ; Hall, History of general physiology, T. 2, 121-132 ; A.         East Hampton Long Island Indenture between Native Americans and inhabitants of East Hampton for the sale of the "neck of land called Montaquit" for the consideration of one hundred pounds sterling.

      - A circa 1800 copy of the original indenture for the purchase of "Montaquit" or Montauk dated August 1, 1660 between native Americans "the old sachem squa late wife of Waiandanoe and her son Wisscombone, Toquaton, Mussuquot, Yourke and gentleman the true and lawful Proprietors of the neck of land commonly Known by the name of Montaquit on the Eastern end of Long Island the one side, and Mr. Thomas Baker, Mr. Robert Rouce (Rouse), Mr. Thomas James, Lyon Gardiner, John Mufford (sic) John Hand and Benjamin Price of the plantation of East Hampton". The indenture describes the location of the land as follows: "the aforesaid neck of land called Montaquit with all and every part and parcel thereof from sea to sea from the utmost end of the land aforesaid to the sea side unto the utmost end of the said land westward adjoined to the [Rouces?] of East Hampton aforesaid ."Waiandanoe (also called Waiandance and Wyandanch) was a sachem born around 1620 in Montauk who became the main "alliance chief", one who maintains friendly relations between his tribe and the local colonists. The Long Island colonists gradually granted him significant financial and military support which was helpful in his ongoing struggles with the Mohegans and Niantics. In the 1650s Waiandanoe was in the midst of a fight with Ninigret, the sachem of the Niantics, in which his (Waiandanoe's) daughter was held captive; Lion (Lyon) Gardiner of this indenture was instrumental in acting as intermediary in payment of the ransom for her. In 1659 Waiandanoe appointed Gardiner as guardian to his young son Wyancombone; perhaps this is the son referred to in this indenture as Wisscombone.Lion Gardiner (1599 - 1663) is known as one of the earliest English settlers of Long Island. Gardiner and Waiandanoe developed a long standing relationship on Long Island. Gardiner was a military engineer first hired to fortify the colony of Connecticut; he completed and commanded Saybrook Fort during the Pequot War. Gardiner settled the island now known as Gardiner's Island as a proprietary colony in 1639; according to some reports Gardiner also purchased the island from the Montaukett Indians (Waiandanoe) because of Gardiner's intercession in paying the ransom for Waiandanoe's daughter. Gardiner's royal patent to his island allowed him to "possess the land forever"; since 1639 it has been privately owned by Gardiner family descendants and is the only US property still held by royal grant from the British crown.Docketed on back, "Montauk Indians to Thomas James, Robert Bond, & others/ Deed "Copy" Dated 1st Aug 1660 of all Montauk for L100 sterling." Folio, written on two sides, three original folds. Some contemporary cracking of the fold lines. 8 x 13".

AN ACT, FURTHER TO SUSPEND THE COMMERCIAL INTERCOURSE BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND FRANCE, AND THE DEPENDENCIES THEREOF [caption title]

[Philadelphia. 1800].. [Philadelphia. 1800].. [3]p. on a single folded folio sheet. Docketed in ink on the verso. Folio. Old folds. Closed split along the horizontal portion of the center cross- fold, but not affecting text. Very good. Rare congressional act extending the suspension of trade with France during the so-called "Quasi-War" of the late 1790s, further tightening the ban on French ships seeking to enter American ports, and clarifying the status of Hispaniola, which was in the process of coming under the control of Toussaint L'Ouverture. This act was approved February 27, 1800, and extends and expands the provisions of the law first approved June 13, 1798 and furthered in 1799. It is signed in type at the conclusion by President Adams, Vice-President Jefferson, and Speaker of the House Theodore Sedgwick. The Quasi-War was an undeclared conflict between the United States and France during the Adams administration in the late 1790s, manifested mostly in naval engagements between the two nations. The war was the outgrowth of deteriorating Franco-American relations, which had been weakened earlier in the decade by the "Genet Affair" and the "XYZ Affair," and it wreaked havoc on commerce between the two nations. One of the main weapons wielded by Adams was to ban American commerce from France and French dependencies, accomplished by the congressional act of 1798. That law was extended by an act of 1799, which also permitted United States navy vessels to inspect and potentially seize American vessels that have traded with France or with French dependencies. This 1800 extension of the law adds further provisions to the previous two acts, allowing French ships coming into American ports to be seized. It also declares that "the whole island of Hispaniola shall for the purposes of this act be considered as a dependency of the French Republic." Hispaniola was in a terrible state of upheaval in 1800, as the former slave, Toussaint L'Ouverture, was consolidating his power throughout the island and expelling or killing the former French rulers. Not listed in OCLC; ESTC locates only the copy at the Library of Congress. EVANS 38693. ESTC W17654.

        The Vicar of Wakefield

London - T. Cadell & W. Davies, J. Scatchard, G. Wilkie, et al, 1800. London - T. Cadell & W. Davies, J. Scatchard, G. Wilkie, et al, 1800 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An excellent reference copy, in a fine binding, of Goldsmith's enduring novel, The Vicar of Wakefield. Bound in leather with gilt lettering and decoration to the spine. With five plates, collated complete. Itwas not until after Goldsmith's death, in 1774, that it witnessed its greatest popularity; more than twenty editions were published in London before the close of the century. The novel basically is divided between the early chapters of Arcadian bliss and the later part, where calamities accumulate alarmingly to destroy the Primrose family until a sudden dispensation of good fortune cancels all the disasters and resolves everything in marriages. Two of Goldsmith's best-known poems, Edwin and Angelina and An Elegy on the Death of a Mad Dog, and the song When Lovely Woman Stoops to Folly appeared in this novel (DNB). Condition: The binding is generally tight and firm. The front board is held by the cords only, and the title page is detached. There is some wear to the extremities, including some rubbing, most prominent to the spine. Internally the pages are bright with slightly browned tidemarks to the title page, page 1, and the occasional spot, most prominent to the first and last few pages. Overall the condition is good only, with a very good interior..

The Tales of Genii; Or, The Delightful Lessons of Horam, the Son of Asmar. In two volumes

London - C. Cooke, 1800. London - C. Cooke, 1800 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An early set of Ridley's popular story based on Arabian Nights, illustrated with engravings. Cooke's Pocket Edition. Featuring additional engraved titlepages and 5 other engraved plates. Complete in two volumes. James Kenneth Ridley (17361765) was an English author. He is mainly remembered for his Oriental pastiche Tales of the Genii, a set of stories based on those of the Arabian Nights. The work, firstpublished in two volumes in 1764, was issued under the pen name 'Sir Charles Morell', supposedly British Ambassador at Bombay. Ridley's Tales were allegedly composed by an imam named Horam and translated from a Persian manuscript; in actuality, they were products of Ridley's imagination. The Tales belong to a genre of imitation Orientalia popular in the eighteenh century; in its own time and after, Ridley's book was compared to Samuel Johnson's Rasselas. Ridley's compilation was popular, and went through seven editions by 1861; German and French translations also appeared. Condition: In the original full tree calf bindings. Externally, some rubbing to the extremities. Jointstender butstill reasonablyfirm. Internally, generally firmly bound although pp. 15-22 of Volume I are working loose and one plate of Volume II is detached but present. Some scattered light foxing. Ink inscriptions to front pastedowns and free endpapers, one of which has been crossed out. Ink signatures to corner of engraved titlepages. Some slight tidemarks to the plates. Overall: GOOD ONLY..

The Farmer's Boy; A Rural Poem and Rural Tales, Ballads and Songs

02 - London - T. Bensley, 1800. 02 - London - T. Bensley, 1800 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. An illustratedcollection of Bloomfield's poetry, in a fine binding. The Farmer's Boy is a second edition and Rural Tales is a first edition. The Farmer's Boy features an engraved portrait frontispiece. Contains numerous vignettes. Robert Bloomfield (December 3 1766 August 19 1823) was an English labouring class poet. 'The Farmer's Boy' was the poem which made Bloomfield's reputation. The manuscript was declined by several publishers and was eventually shown by his brother George to Capel Lofft, a radical Suffolk squire of literary tastes, who arranged for its publication with woodcuts by Thomas Bewick in 1800. The success of the poem was remarkable, over 25,000 copies being sold in the next two years. The poem was particularly admired by the Suffolk-born painter John Constable who used couplets from it as tags to two paintings. Bloomfield's reputation was increased by the appearance of his Rural Tales (1802), several poems of which were set to music by his brother Isaac. Another of them, 'The Miller's Maid', was made intoan opera by John Davy (17631824) in 1804 and formed the basis for a two-act melodrama by John Faucit Saville (18071855) in 1821. Condition: In a half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, excellent with just minor shelfwear only. Internally, firmly bound. The Farmer's Boy is foxed throughout and Rural Tales has scattered foxing. Some small tears to the margins of several pages and p103 has loss to the upper margin.         L'Homme des champs, ou les Georgiques francaises

Strasbourg - de l'Imprimerie de Levrault, 1800. Strasbourg - de l'Imprimerie de Levrault, 1800 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A first edition of thistranslation of Virgil's epic poem The Georgics, from French poet and translator Jacques Delille. Published whilst the author was in Switzerland, having fled France after the Revolution. The Georgics is a poem in four books, likely published in 29 BC. It is the second major work by the Latin poet Virgil, following his Eclogues and preceding the Aeneid. It is a poem that draws on many prior sources and influenced many later authors from antiquity to the present. As its name suggests (Georgica, from the Greek) the subject of the poem is agriculture; but far from being an example of peaceful rural poetry, it is a work characterized by tensions in both theme and purpose. With frontispiece engraving. In French. With an armorial ecclesiastical bookplate bearing the motto 'Honi soit qui mal y pense' to front pastedown. Condition: In a full calf binding. Externally sound, with some marks to the boards and and some wear to the corners and the head and tail of the spine. Front joint cracked, with rear joint starting. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, with just some scattered light spotting throughout. Overall: GOOD..
