      First edition. A student of Joseph Vernet, influenced by Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin, Valenciennes was the most prominent French historical landscape painter of his day as well as being an original and influential theorist on the art of landscape painting. "In the late 18th century, Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes changed the tide for landscape painting in France. Like Poussin, he saw landscape painting as worthy of the status of history painting and worked to convince the Academy and his contemporaries. In 1800 he published a groundbreaking book on landscape painting, Elémens de perspective practique. The book emphasized the aesthetic ideal of the 'historic landscape,' which must be based on the study of real nature. The success of the book pushed the Academy to create a prize for 'historic landscape' in 1817. The next generation of French landscape painters would benefit greatly from Valenciennes' efforts." ["Brief History of the Landscape Genre," www.getty.edu]. Of particular importance in his treatise is its final chapter, devoted entirely to garden design. Valenciennes considered the landscape painter to be uniquely qualified for the design of gardens, and provides precepts to follow in creating them. His insistence on Nature as the primary model for landscape painting is echoed in his views on landscape gardening. The alignment or trimming of trees is completely rejected. The importance of respecting the requirements and opportunities of the individual site is continually stressed. Italian gardens are singled out for their picturesque qualities (Valenciennes spent much time there) and English gardens are also considered, though not without some criticism. Even such French picturesque gardens as the Petit Trianon, Bagatelle and the Désert de Retz are faulted, but with the allowance that with complete neglect and the passage of time they might arrive at a suitable imitation of Nature. Ermenonville, however, is regularly singled out for praise and seems to stand as the perfect example of the type of garden Valenciennes attempted to promote.4to (25.7 x 20 cm); (ii) + xxxii + 644 + xii pp. + 36 folding engraved plates. RISM M4780 (three copies in the U.S., not distinguishing among issues). Except for pp. 18-19, all plates are characterized by an inclined violin (G) clef; pages 18-19 have an upright clef instead. The copy at the Eda Kuhn Loeb Music Library at Harvard University, tentatively dated 1796 and supposedly a first issue, shows the inclined G clef to all pages. On the other hand, the number and tempo of the aria are presented in a style different from the rest of the volume, i.e., as an caption title above the first system rather than to the left of it (as in the present copy). Also, the aria is the only number of the opera billed, in another caption, as "aus der Zauberflöte." A comparison of the publisher's catalogues, however, confirms that the Harvard copy is earlier. A peculiar detail of the Simrock vocal score, present from the first issue on, is the replacement of the famous high Fs in the aria of the Queen of the Night, "Der Hölle Rache," with Ds, causing awkward dissonances. It would seem that this was originally a transcription error, but it was never corrected, not even in post-1814 issues in which many other pages are re-engraved. The arranger of this score, Friedrich Eunike (1764-1844), was a tenor who had performed the role of Tamino. Die Zauberflöte, Mozart's only work in the popular genre of "magic" opera, was first performed on September 30, 1791 in Vienna at the Theater auf der Wieden to a libretto by the theatre manager who commissioned the work and played the part of Papageno, Emanuel Schikaneder. "Die Zauberflöte is distinguished from the bulk of contemporary Singspiels not merely by the quality of its music but also by the serious meanings that underlie what on the surface may seem childish pantomime or low comedy." The New Grove Vol. 12 p. 721. It became immensely successful, and numbers from it were issued individually shortly after the premiere.

A fine, large, characteristic Rowlandson watercolor showing a well-dressed man receiving a drink from a rotund publican whose eye is caught by an attractive young lady in a carriage at the rear; two dogs in the foreground. The women appears oblivious to the two men, but whether this is actually so is typical of Rowlandson's frequent ambiguity, and.who knows? Certainly the gentleman looks well pleased.Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827) was probably the finest of the draftsmen and caricaturists who portrayed life and manners in 18th and early 19th century England. Starting life as a painter of portraits and serious subjects, he found it more profitable to produce humorous drawings of low life and ridiculous subjects. Erasmus Darwin (1731-1802) was an English physiologist and poet, and the grandfather of Charles Darwin. The Phytologia is divided in three parts, one on the physiology of plants, the second on the economy of vegetation, the third on the production of fruits, seeds, etc., and it contain a plan for changing part of the Linnean system "...into more natural classes and orders". The improved drill plough mentioned in the title is described in the appendix. In the centre an apothecary remonstrates with the servant whom he accuses of obtaining the poison. Through the window to the right is a view of Old London Bridge. Forty pen-and-ink and watercolor drawings, each captioned in red ink, recto only on 40 sheets of wove paper (watermarked Horne). Oblong octavo. Contemporary half black morocco and blue boards, yellow endpapers. Lacks front free endpaper. Very good. John Abbot was one of the most important American natural history artists and his illustrations are amongst the finest ever made. Born in London in 1751, Abbot sailed for Virginia in July 1773, with orders for both actual specimens and drawings of the local insects. For the next two years he continued to collect and paint, sending home three insect collections, although only one arrived safely. The loss of these two valuable collections at sea together with the worry over political unrest in Virginia led Abbot to move to Georgia. He settled in St. George Parish (later Burke County), Georgia in December 1775. Abbot traveled widely throughout Georgia devoting his time to the study of the natural flora and fauna. The flow of specimen collections and watercolors of insects ensured that his name became known to many of the foremost natural scientists and collectors of the day, both in America and Europe. Abbot's NATURAL HISTORY OF THE RARER LEPIDOPTEROUS INSECTS OF GEORGIA was first published in London in 1797. The present French manuscript includes forty watercolors based on the plates from that edition. The images comprise fifty-three depictions of butterflies and moths on the forty sheets, with eleven of the images including depictions of the lepidoptera in caterpillar form and several with depictions of flora and/or chrysalis. Each image is captioned in French above or below the image and numbered 1to 40 in the upper right corner; the alphabetical index corresponds to each watercolor ensuring that no images have been removed from the album. Between 1829 and 1837 interest in Abbot in France was greatly elevated due to the publication of a new work based on Abbot watercolors commissioned by lepidopterists Jean Baptiste Boisduval and John Eatton LeConte. It would seem possible that this album was related in some way to lepidopterist Jean Baptiste Boisduval. In fine condition. Excellent, attractive set, exceptionally well preserved. ~ First edition. Friedrich Meinert (1757-1828), was professor of philosophy at the University of Halle. In 1797 he began his military career as a Royal Prussian Lieutenant in the Second Engineers Brigade; taught fortifications and fortress war at the Military Engineering Academy in Potsdam. Compiled the "Encyclopädie der Kriegswissenschaften und der Kriegskunst". He was a prolific scientist who wrote on astronomy, geodesy, economics and architecture. He was the first to "apply mathematics for the well-being of the state and its citizens, not so much to questions of distribution and political welfare as to economic law and theory, and above all to a multitude of technical questions that fall under the jurisdiction of the government: structural engineering in construction inspections; ballistics for artillery; mechanics and machinery in mills, transport, manufacturing, and mining." -- Rüdiger Campe: The Game of Probability: Literature and Calculation from Pascal to Kleist (2012).       [Cairo?]: No printer [Imprimerie nationale?], 15 frimaire an 9, [6th December 1800]. Letterpress single sheet (435 × 305 mm) in French and Arabic. Float-mounted with photo corners and and presented in a brown wooden frame with a white gold edge. Faint damp-staining to right-hand side, small pale mark to head, a few areas of very light spotting as usual, gently creased across middle. Very good condition. Poster issued by the commander of the French army in Egypt months before their defeat by British and Ottoman forces in 1801. Napoleon had led the newly created Armée d'Orient to Egypt in 1798, seeking to challenge British influence in India; perhaps realising that his own political ambitions would be best pursued at home, he returned to France in August the following year after the disastrous siege of Acre. Napoleon was succeeded by Jean-Baptiste Kléber, who was soon assassinated and himself succeeded by 'Abd Allah Jacques Menou, "a French officer (and former nobleman) who had turned Muslim, was determined to maintain the occupation and administered at first a tolerably settled country, although he lacked the prestige of his two predecessors" (Encyc. Brit.). Although a military failure, the French invasion of Egypt was a turning point in the fledgling career of Napoleon Bonaparte as well as in the twin histories of the French Republic and European colonialism. It has also been interpreted as symbolising the new era of Western ascendancy following centuries of Ottoman pre-eminence; indeed, it was widely perceived this way in the Muslim world at the time and thus proved an important catalyst in the nascent Arab Renaissance. The Revolutionary tenets of "liberty" and "equality" are rendered into Arabic at the head of the poster and the Arabic basmalah is likewise translated into French, but Menou's wording ultimately speaks to the desperate solicitude of an embattled ruler: "I have already told you that I punish only evildoers and those who do not fear God and his Prophet … I repeat to you once more, the French Republic and the famous warrior Bonaparte have ordered me to govern you with kindness, justice and humanity". A remarkable survival from one of the defining moments in modern history.

      1800 1800 - Gouache, auf Bütten, verso signiert und datiert „Carolina Friederica Friedrich à l an 1800". 29:20,3 cm. Die Tochter des Tapetenmalers und Radierers David Friedrich (1719-1766) war Schülerin ihres Vaters und ihres Bruders, des Historienmalers Alexander Friedrich (1744-1793). Bei ersterem erlernte sie das Zeichnen und die Anwendung der Wasserfarben, bei ihrem Bruder die Ölmalerei. Darüber hinaus bildete sie sich durch Beobachtung der Natur autodidaktisch weiter. Beachtung fand sie schon früh durch Chr.L. von Hagedorn (1712-1780), Kunstkritiker und Direktor der Dresdener Akademie. Vom Kurfürsten Friedrich August III. wurde sie 1770/71 zur Pensionärin (Stipendiatin) der Dresdener Akademie mit einer jährlichen Gratifikation von 25 Talern ernannt, 1774 wurde sie Ehrenmitglied. Schon zu Lebzeiten fand sie viel Anerkennung und war seit 1776 auf nahezu jeder Akademie-Ausstellung in Dresden mit ihren Werken vertreten. 1783 wurde ihre Stipendium-Gratifikation erhöht, zugleich erfolgte die Ernennung zur Unterlehrerin für Stilleben an der Akademie. Die Künstlerin lebte jahrelang in einer Hausgemeinschaft mit ihrem Kollegen Johann Eleazar Zeissig, gen. Schenau (1737-1805) und unterrichtete bis 1812 zahlreiche Schüler und Schülerinnen. Ihre Zeichnungen, Aquarelle und Gouachen sind u.a. im Kupferstichkabinett in Dresden, der Graphiksammlung der Kunstsammlungen Weimar zu finden. Auch in der Sammlung von König Friedrich August III. war sie mit Arbeiten vertreten.

The publisher's catalogue lists editions up to ca. 1800 (Mozart, La clemenza di Tito). French text underlay added in red ink to Terzetto no. 19 (Tamino's part only), pp. 94-99. No. 2, Papageno's aria ("Der Vogelfänger bin ich ja") re-engraved (different clef shapes). Label of Chalet, Marchand Papetier, Paris, to upper outer corner of front pastedown. Boards quite worn, rubbed and bumped; spine lacking. Moderately browned; some stains (pp. 58-59, 67-68, ); occasional paper imperfections; upper outer corner of pp. 7-8 lacking from pp. 7-8 with loss of several notes; price to title erased.. A variant (probably later) issue of Simrock's 1793 edition. Köchel 6 p. 712. Hoboken 12, 558 (with older version of p. 120, lacking plate number). RISM M4780 (three copies in the U.S., not distinguishing among issues). Except for pp. 18-19, all plates are characterized by an inclined violin (G) clef; pages 18-19 have an upright clef instead. The copy at the Eda Kuhn Loeb Music Library at Harvard University, tentatively dated 1796 and supposedly a first issue, shows the inclined G clef to all pages. On the other hand, the number and tempo of the aria are presented in a style different from the rest of the volume, i.e., as an caption title above the first system rather than to the left of it (as in the present copy). Also, the aria is the only number of the opera billed, in another caption, as "aus der Zauberflöte." A comparison of the publisher's catalogues, however, confirms that the Harvard copy is earlier. A peculiar detail of the Simrock vocal score, present from the first issue on, is the replacement of the famous high Fs in the aria of the Queen of the Night, "Der Hölle Rache," with Ds, causing awkward dissonances. It would seem that this was originally a transcription error, but it was never corrected, not even in post-1814 issues in which many other pages are re-engraved. The arranger of this score, Friedrich Eunike (1764- 1844), was a tenor who had performed the role of Tamino. Die Zauberflöte, Mozart's only work in the popular genre of "magic" opera, was first performed on September 30, 1791 in Vienna at the Theater auf der Wieden to a libretto by the theatre manager who commissioned the work and played the part of Papageno, Emanuel Schikaneder. "Die Zauberflöte is distinguished from the bulk of contemporary Singspiels not merely by the quality of its music but also by the serious meanings that underlie what on the surface may seem childish pantomime or low comedy." The New Grove Vol. 12 p. 721. It became immensely successful, and numbers from it were issued individually shortly after the premiere.

Società Calcografia in Venedig, um 1800, 50 X 67 Bibliographisch nicht nachweisbar! - Diese sehr seltene Karte gehört zu einem nie beendetem Projekt der "Società Calcografia", ein Zusammenschluß der beiden venezianischen Verleger des 18. Jahrhundert Antonio Zatta und Giuseppe Antonio Remondini. - Weitere Karten die uns aus dem Projekt bekannt sind tragen auch den Namen "à Venise Chez la Societe Chalcographique". - Das Projekt ist nie beendet worden und die Karten in keiner uns bekannten Bibliographie aufgeführt. - Oben rechts in Manuskript "N. XI." - Die Karte zeigt Südwestfrankreich mit den genannten Départements in dem Gebiet zwischen der Mündung der Gironde und Nordspanien. - Am linken Rand altkolorierte Titelkartusche; unten links Erklärungen und Meilenzeiger. - Vorliegende Karte aus der Serie als einzige undatiert! - Extrem seltener Einblattdruck! This very rare map belongs to a never finished project for the atlas of the so called Società Calcografia, a simple commercial trade realized by the two main Venetian publishers of the XVIII century, Antonio Zatta and Giuseppe Antonio Remondini. The term Società Calcografica has been deduced from the map of the world, which is part of the collection and bears in the lower cartouche the French writing "à Venise Chez la Societè Chalcographique". As already stated, the project was never finished for no atlas containing these maps has ever been listed in any bibliography. Very likely, then, the maps have been sold individually, or maybe as part of smaller, custom collections. The maps of the collection derive from Paolo and Francesco Santini’s plates, used by Remondini in his 1782/4 "Atlas Universelle" and from the plates of Antonio Zatta’s "Nuovo Atlante" published in 1796. Santini’s maps have been beautifully enriched, using the system of small, masked plates which can be perceived through the platemarks on the paper, with great cartouches according to the classical style of Zatta and have been probably engraved by the members of his staff, Pasquali, Zuliani and Pitteri. The cartouches bear very often historical descriptions and maybe the maps have been realized to depict the great geographic changes of the peninsula during the Napoleonic period. In our opinion, the two publishers worked together to the realization of the project until Antonio Zatta died (1804), and the complete atlas was never finished because Giuseppe Antonio Remondini also died in 1811. Not all the views are identified, but among the ones that are views of Kyushu, Kyoto, Osaka and Edo. The plates are engravings, an unusual process for Japan. By and large the impressions are excellent.

Includes navigational tables, a concordance between the Muslim and the French Republican calendar, and a comparison of French and Egyptian units of measure. Of particular importance is a table of French army in the Orient, showing the members of the administration, of finances, of the Commission of Sciences and Arts, of the Institute, etc. - Only in October 1798 had J. J. Marcel arrived in Cairo with his employees and types to organize the Imprimerie Orientale, thus introducing modern printing to the Arab world. "The expedition of Napoleon Bonaparte to Egypt from 1798 until 1801 was a prelude to modernity. It was to change permanently the traditional Arab world [...] The French brought Arabic typography to Egypt, where it was practised under the supervision [...] of Jean Joseph Marcel [...]. Only a few days after the French troops landed [...] they set up the Imprimerie Orientale et Francaise there. It was an extraordinarily important turning point.       Second, deluxe edition of "Ampère's greatest work," Theorie Mathematique… or Memoir on the Mathematical Theory of Electrodynamic Phenomena, Uniquely Deduced from Experience (DSB). Widely referred to as "the Principia of Electrodynamics," with this work Ampère founded the science of electrodynamics, now known as electromagnetism. "Volta's invention of the pile c. 1800 made it possible to experiment with steady electric currents and led to Oersted's discovery, in 1820" of an action of electricity on magnets that suggested "the presence of a magnetic force that is perpendicular both to the direction of the wire and to the shortest line from the wire to the magnet" - to the orientation one would expect. (Torretti, The Philosophy of Physics, 82). "Ampère, after an extraordinary bout of experimentation and mathematical theorizing, succeeded in explaining electromagnetic interaction by central forces acting at a distance… Ampère accounts for all electrodynamic and electromagnetic phenomena known to him by a force acting at a distance between infinitesimal elements of electric current, along the line joining them. According to Ampère's Law, any two such elements interact with a force directed along the line joining them and proportional to the product of their current intensities multiplied by a function of their directions and divided by their distance squared" (ibid). "Ampère also provided a physical understanding of the electromagnetic relationship, theorizing the existence of an "electrodynamic molecule" (the forerunner of the idea of the electron) that served as the component element of both electricity and magnetism. Using this physical explanation of electromagnetic motion, Ampère developed a physical account of electromagnetic phenomena that was both empirically demonstrable and mathematically predictive" (Wikipedia). In 1827 Ampère published the first edition of this volume and has been known since as this field's founding father.
