(1) f. d'errata, 5 tableaux dépliants. Edition originale et unique. "Ouvrage où sont groupés des renseignements que l'on ne trouve guère ailleurs sur les finances des dernières années de la Révolution. Ministre des Finances sous le Directoire, l'auteur fut l'initiateur d'importantes réformes financières et fiscales et le premier à avoir l'idée du cadastre.         Le Dégoût du métier, ou Les Conseils de l'expérience à un jeune homme qui se propose d'embrasser l'état militaire;

Imprudent ! A quels maux viens-tu te dévouer ?

Prijs: € 2.950,- (incl lijst, BTW margeregeling).

Mademoiselle Lundens / Maîtresse de Rubens

Paris: Charles Bance & Aumont, 1800. Aquatint engraving printed in colour à la poupée on wove paper. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling, minor foxing, and a skillfully repaired small loss in the left margin. Trimmed close to plate mark on all sides. A striking beautifully coloured engraving after the renowned 17th-century Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens. A representation of Rubens' sister-in-law, Susanna Lunden, this plate is part of a series of three aquatints Debucourt completed after paintings by Tintoretto, Rubens, and Raphael. Susan Lunden was the daughter of the Antwerp silk merchant Daniel Fourment and the sister of Rubens' second wife Helena. Originally titled 'Le Chapeau de Paille' [The Straw Hat], the painting after which this plate is engraved dates from around 1622-25 and may have been a marriage portrait intended for Lunden's second husband Arnold. This print is a stunning example of the single plate colour printing technique used in France beginning in the 18th century. The effect is achieved by inking a single plate with several different colours by using a rag stump, a process known as à la poupée. The outcome achieved by this laborious method of inking has a wonderful painterly effect and creates a delicacy of image, which is charming to behold. Although a painter by training, Philibert-Louis Debucourt is primarily renowned as one of the most innovative colour printmakers of the eighteenth century. Born in 1781, he studied with Joseph Marie Vien at the French Academy. After several years of exhibiting his paintings at the Salon, he turned to printmaking in 1781. During the mid 1780s, he began experimenting with the complicated multiple-plate colour printing process, a technique that was refined and revolutionized by Jean-François Janinet. Debucourt found success with his colour intaglio prints of Parisian high society, and he quickly earned a reputation as a skilled and prolific engraver. The bulk of his prints, however, were based on paintings by other artists and completed after the turn of the century. Despite his intense focus on printmaking, he continued to exhibit his paintings alongside his engravings at the Salon throughout his life. Cf. Benezit, Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs , vol. 4, p. 323; cf. Regency to Empire: French Printmaking 1715-1814 , p. 346; Fenaille, L'oeuvre gravé de P.-L. Whereas his predecessors had at best applied comparison to select groups of animals, Cuvier consistently attempted to employ it in his study of every known animal or species. Comparative anatomy became for Cuvier an essential segment of the theoretical basis of natural history… Comparative anatomy is therefore the division of the natural sciences which tends to generalize, to erect the theory of organization” (Coleman, 62; Norman Library 565). Volume I contains the principal discussion of Cuvier’s famous theory of the correlation of parts (the functional relationship of each bodily organ to every other organ). “Cuvier ranks with von Baer as one of the founders of modern morphology” (Garrison-Morton 311). Text in French. Horblit, One Hundred Books Famous in Science 20a. Bookplates.Occasional light foxing, faint dampstain in Volume II. An extremely good copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Felis Leo Foemina / La Lionne

Paris, 1800. Copper engraving, printed on laid paper. Good condition apart from some overall light soiling and minor foxing. Trimmed virtually to top platemark. A beautiful plate from Lacépède's "La Menagerie du Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle," an important scholarly work and one of the finest examples of eighteenth-century French natural history illustration. A professor of zoology at the Museum of Natural History, the French naturalist Bernard-Germain-Étienne Delaville, Comte de Lacépède (1756-1825) was a versatile and precocious scholar who published a number of books on zoology, physics, and music. He was greatly influenced by the pioneering naturalist Georges Louis Marie Leclerc, comte de Buffon, whom he succeeded as Intendant at the Jardin du Roi, which later became the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle in 1793. During his tenure, Lacépède completed a comprehensive study of amphibians and reptiles, Historie Naturelle des Quadrupèdes Ovipares et des Serpens , which was published as a supplement to Buffon's magnum opus on animal classification Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particulière . In 1800-1, he published the first edition of La Menagerie du Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle , a thorough survey of the various species of quadrupeds, reptiles and amphibians in the impressive collection of the Museum of Natural History. This magnificent work was comprised of descriptive text written by Lacépède and his colleague Georges L. C., Baron Cuvier (1769-1832) as well as a number of finely rendered plates after the most eminent natural history artists of the period, Nicolas Maréchal (1753-1803), Nicolas Huet (1770-1830) and Léon de Wailly (1801-1824). Painted from life on vellum, these beautifully detailed illustrations faithfully captured the appearance of the wondrous animals in the Paris menagerie. A pupil of J. G. Wille and C. N. Cochin, Simon Charles Miger was a royal academician and a talented engraver, who executed numerous portraits and natural history plates.         Josef Kriehuber (1800-1876). Österreichische Landschaft. Öl auf Papier

      - Josef Kriehuber (1800 Josefstadt (Wien)-Josefstadt (Wien) 1876). Österreichische Landschaft. Öl auf Papier, auf Leinwand aufgezogen. -- Beschreibung: -- Öl auf Papier, auf Leinwand aufgezogen. unten rechts signiert: "J. Kriehuber". -- Größe/Size: -- 22,5 x 32,1 cm. -- Zustand: -- Sehr guter, altersgerechter Zustand mit leichten Altersspuren. Restauriert. MAP OF THE CHOO KEANG OR PEARL RIVER. [Shows Canton, Macao, Hong Kong And Pearl

N.p., n.d.ca 1800-1810,n.p. Single sheet map, 32 x 47 cm., a. bit of mild foxing, old verso repairs, English and romanized. Chinese place names, old folds, as is, some very minor loss. right & left edges, else solid. EARLY AND OBSCURE WORK. RARE. This is clearly an early and most obscure area map. It shows Canton at the upper left corner, with the various confluenc- es of the Pearl River [Choo Keang or now Zhu Jiang] as it meanders down to the Great Western Channel and all of the islands around Hong Kong: Keangshan Island, Lantao, Lintin, Lemma Channel, Macau, and the islands near it. Essentially all islands from the Pacific Ocean as it enters the whole estuary. * This work is basically a map of the Canton and the whole estuary, showing virtually all of the islands and coastal lines. It also uses such early names as the "Bogue" aka Boca Tigris, and shows a good number of Chinese characters for place names, with the associated tanslated Romanization so the map can be read by foreigners as well as Chinese. translating. * Although undated, this map appears to be made in an early time as Hong Kong while cited is not central, and of no significance and is in fact to the extreme right and barely noticeable. The map was clearly done before Hong Kong had any role of importance indicating an early work. This was likely done during the time of Canton trade, so it was more of a navigational guide rather than one used to point out any specific areas other than the Canton Estuary. * Because of its clarity, and use of Chinese characters, one could also ascribe the use to navigators who employed Chinese pilots to assist in sailing though the islands into the Pearl River to Canton and Whampoa or to Macau and its passages to Canton. * A scan can be sent by email.         EROTIC ALBUM: A Suite of Thirteen Erotic Woodblock Printed Prints.

[Japan n.d. 1800-1830's]. An accordion folding album, blue. & gold floral pattern, silk brocade cloth covers, edges worn,. 1 pastel-colored print, plus a complete suite of 12 color. prints, album size 33.5 x 27.5 cm., gilt top & bottom edges.. The album is in its original and worn silk and gold brocade cloth and contains thirteen Oban [ca 38 x 24.5 cm] sized woodblock prints. * The first is a very early and most delicately colored pastel work and by far the most superior of the group. We estimate it to have been printed ca. 1778. It is finely drawn, with the most subtle and even faint pastel colors. His earliest works were often done in [Sumi outline] black & white, with out any color at all. As the technology and techniques of polychrome printing by woodblock improved, and grew in popularity, Utamaro also began to experiment with color. At first he experimented using the most subtle hint of color in shades of pastel, to slightly enhance his images. Utamaro did not want viewers to be distracted from the emotional and erotic subject, so kept he often kept his use of color to a minimum. * The first print clearly shows the beginnings of this concept to sparingly use color, as an after-thought for mild high- lighting. As an early work, Utamaro had yet to commit to the use of color. The balance of the suite containes some twelve later prints by him, done circa 1800-1806. This is composed of four prints with a matching border, eight others that match as a set. The whole work was likely assembled by a collector. * In the first series of four, Utamaro has now progressed and submitted to the popular trend of polychrome printing, but only using a few colors in pastel. The first four prints in the suite show conservative use of pastels, but left the human figures skin entirely uncolored. The second series begins with print five and shows again a bit later progres- sion of the artist's work. He begins a major change in his use of color. Now he has committed to the full use of color, employing a large number of vivid colors to enhance his work. * He has found that the use of pink on the genitals, facial lips and tongue are effective to show the true and real excitement of the moment. Utamaro knew that during sexual excitement, the lips of the vagina and as well as the penis would flush with pink, especially the head or glans penis area. * Being true to the original models, he employed these colors effectively. What makes this album special, is that it is a collection of Utamaro's works from his earliest period, the middle and later stage in his artistic development. One can compare the works and see how the artist progressed in his use of color, while keeping his drawing skills under the finest of control. * Each print shows a couple making love in various positions and forms. Mostly the lovers are clothed or partially clothed, while they share tender and private moments while making love. Some of the women are Joroh or prostitutes, elaborately clothed while their Kimono are urgently thrown open to reveal their genitals. A few show the woman nearly nude while succumbing to licentious pleasures. Completely nude figures engaged in love-making was not common in Japan, and they considered partially clothed figures to the most erotic of all. * THE ARTIST: Utamaro [1754-1806] was one of Japan's most celebrated and treasured artists of the late 18th century. His works are always elegant and finely drawn with the utmost skill. His style is unique. His studio name was Murasakiya [The Purple- shop], he lived in Edo [Old Tokyo], was influence by the famous Kitao Masanobu & Torii Kiyonaga, the major artists of the Primitive schools. He was a central figure in the Edo world of artist artists & writers, an Ukiyo-e painter and printmaker. He was actually arrested by the Shogunate government and imprisoned in 1804 for violating the laws on the prohibition against publishing erotic or "uncensored" prints or books. We are unsure just which of his many erotic works were the subject of his violation. Utamaro felt a strong need to express himself and to include erotic works as part of his genre. Utamaro was one of the very first Japanese woodcut artists to be known in Europe, his art even influence Toulouse-Latrec. In 1788 two of his most important works appeared, one of them was Uta Makura [Pillow Poems] a highly erotic book. Among the scenes depicted was a superb work showing the rape of a young girl by a middle-aged coolie. He was especially skilled at painting young courtesans and actors. He was best known for the drawing and painting of women both at home and in the brothels of Tokyo area or "gay" quarters. His women are always depicted in his distinctive style, showing their attractive, elegant look, with small features, tall and graceful. Utamaro spent a considerable amount of his time in the "gay" quarters, taking notes ! * The color works were always clear and fresh, with a marvelous appeal. His works dominated the Japanese world of prints for over a generation. Always highly coveted & collected, his works have continually brought solid prices at world auctions. World museums have actively collected his works, and he is well represented throughout the world. * Utamaro has been one of the most superb portrayers of Japan- ese womanhood, in sensual and beautiful terms, the "eternal female" is the theme which he has most successfully used to charm viewers. There has never been a Japanese artist more successful at this task than Utamaro. * THE ALBUM: Along with the prints are later and useful manuscript text showing the genealogy of the Utamaro & other Ukiyo-e pain- ter schools. This is a two-sided album: side one has the first and most impressive print plus six other color prints; side two has six color prints. * A RARE EXAMPLE ! * REFERENCES: L. Roberts: DICTIONARY OF JAPANESE ARTISTS, p.193 * R. Lane: IMAGES FROM THE FLOATING WORLD, pages 135-141, photo 140 shows the rape print. * Color scans can be sent by email.         [AUTOGRAPH NOTE, SIGNED, BY JOHN MARSHALL AS SECRETARY OF STATE, INSTRUCTING HIS CORRESPONDENT ON HOW TO OBTAIN RECORDS OF A CASE DECIDED BY THE SUPREME COURT]

Washington, 1800. Foxed, else very good. A brief but interesting note in the hand of John Marshall and signed by him a year before he became the fourth Chief Justice of the United States. Although the note relates to the business of the Supreme Court, it was actually written by Marshall while he was Secretary of State, less than a month after he assumed that office. Marshall writes to a Mr. Temple: "If you will call at the office of the Prothonotary, I think the officers there will be pleased to show you any record of any case that has been disposed of by the Supreme Court. The case to which you seek access has been decided unanimously." Marshall had been a prominent jurist since the mid-1780s, and in 1798 he actually declined his first appointment to the Supreme Court, as an Associate Justice. Despite that he had argued before the Supreme Court, and was clearly well informed as to its workings, as is indicated by this note. This Marshall letter is not listed in THE PAPERS OF JOHN MARSHALL.

SUITE OF SIX MINIATURE GOAUCHE PAINTINGS ON PITH PAPER OF CHINESE TORTURE AND EX

[Canton ca. 1800-1820, Lam-Qua?]. Red flax mat, six goauche. color paintings on pith paper, each 10 x 7 cm, two per mat,. very good, clean, two with marginal chips, image not affected. meticulously color drawn in much detail. R A R E. METICULOUSLY DRAWN WITH MUCH DETAIL IN FULL COLOR THE SUITE OF SIX COLOR GOAUCH PAINTINGS: Begins with the a painting of Imperial police bringing the accused to where he will be punished. He wears a cangue or a large wooden collar clamped around his neck, with his crime written on paper which is then glued to the wood. Image two shows the guilty on his knees being beaten with a leather strap by the punisher. Image three shows the policeman pulling a chain connected to a metal ring on the neck of the accused. The next shows the image of a large rock connected to a chain and the accused sitting on the rock with the chain fastened to his leg. The fifth shows the magistrate pointing his finger at the guilty as he while being admonished, the guilty is forced to kneel on small rocks while a policeman holds ears. The last image shows the executioner with a long sword at the ready, while the accused has a very sour look on his face, his hands tied behind his back, with his crime written on a long piece of wood at his side. It was common to parade the guilty through the streets for all to see the criminal as he was led to the execution grounds. * LAM-QUA, TING-QUA SCHOOL: The works are done in the Canton style of Lam-Qua and his brother, Ting-qua. See item #2 below for a link. * Ting-qua born ca. 1809; flourished 1840-70. He was the brother of Lam-Qua [1801-1860] and probably a close relation of Spoilum. Ting-qua's studio at 16 China Street, Guangzhou, was perhaps the most prolific source of Chinese export paintings of its time. Working in a manner influenced by Western artistic traditions, Ting-qua and the painters of his studio restricted themselves to gouache and water-colors, perhaps to avoid rivalry with Lam-qua's oil paintings. Their pictures, which were often sold in sets..." Quoted from item #2 below. * PITH PAPER: The paintings were done on pith paper. "Pith paper or rice paper," a misnomer as it is sometimes known, is made from the inner pith of the plant Tetrapanex papyrifera, which is a member of the Araliaceae family. The plant is a shrub native to Southern China and Taiwan. As well as a painting material, pith paper was used to make artificial flowers and surgical dressings." Cited from item #1 below. * THE LEGAL SYSTEM OF CHINA IN EARLY 19TH CENTURY: Justice was swift and usually done to make an example of the accused. If the accused pleaded guilty and confessed, his punishment was lessoned. If he persisted in innocence, even though he was not guilty, his punishment was more severe. Showing a cooperative attitude was of advantage. Nearly all people accused of a crime were assumed to be guilty. The punishment for various crimes were commonly known, and justice was meted out by the magistrate. * RARITY: Gouache pith paintings are now rare, most were damaged, cracked and brittle, rendering them useless. The few that survived are considered RARE and uncommon. The paintings were drawn with much skill and patience, and were for the most part drawn for and sold to foreigners in the treaty ports of China in the early 19th century. Drawn with a fine brush in vivid colors, the paintings depicted things that would fascinate foreigners, and encourage them to bring home as souvenirs. The current examples often caught the eye of foreigners who may have actually seen some form of public punishment or execution. * CONDITION: The work is remarkable clean and solid. As usual, when ever pith paper is fastened at the corners there is a reaction to moisture in the air and the paper will expand or contract and thus snap its connection. By and large these works are not damaged, except for two corners where there was some loss. Please see link #1 below on how to mount, and care for pith paintings. These can be re-matted per the link and preserved on acid-free paper and reframed for display. *** BIBLIOGRAPHY: 1: http://www.artfacts.org/artinfo/articals/pith_paper.html Please see this site for copious details on pith plant, and its uses. * 2. http://www.answers.com/topic/tingqua * 3. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lam_Qua * C.L.         Bowles's New One-sheet Map of the Independent States of Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pensylvania [sic.], New Jersey. New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island. &c. comprehending also the habitations & hunting countries of the confederate Indians

London: printed for the Proprietors Bowles & Carver, 1800. Copper-engraved map, with full original colour, overall in very good condition. A rare late issue of an important map by `the leading American geographer of his day' (Stephenson & McKee) This 'landmark map'(op.cit.) was first published in 1755 with the title A general Map of the Middle British Colonies in America. It was available either as a separate publication or bound into Evans' Geographical, Historical, Political. Philosophical and Mechanical Essays. The First Containing an Analysis of a General Map of the Middle British Colonies in America (Philadelphia: Benjamin Franklin and David Hall, 1755). `Evans was the leading American geographer of his day. He incorporated into his map a wealth of geographical information not previously available on other maps, especially for the Ohio country. Extending from Quebec to Virginia and from the Atlantic coast to the Ohio River, his map was published in numerous authorized and pirated editions throughout the remainder of the eighteenth century' (op.cit.). The Bowles piracy was one of the longest lived versions: John Bowles first issued a version of Evans' map in about 1760 and continued to do so for the rest of the century with alterations to the imprint and occasional changes of title. The present example shows the Bowles piracy in its final form, and appears to be considerably rarer than a number of the earlier issues: no copies of this issue are listed as having sold at auction in the past thirty years.         An original drawing with a Royal Navy warship firing her cannon out to sea, titled 'Pigeon Island from the Town of Gros Islet,' St. Lucia

[St. Lucia, 1800. Pen, ink and wash drawing within an ink-ruled border, titled in the margin beneath in ink in a contemporary hand. Image size: 6 5/8 x 9 7/8 inches; sheet size: 7 5/8 x 10 5/8 inches. A fine early view recalling St. Lucia's turbulent past. The view includes a British ship-of-war in the foreground, with Pigeon Island behind, with Fort Rodney topping the smaller of the two peaks. The island was used as a look-out post to keep an eye on the French naval base on Martinique to the north. The image also includes two large ships in the background and these, combined with the fact that the ship in the foreground has just fired a broadside, may mean that this image was intended to act as a record of one of the many encounters that took place before Britain finally took control of St. Lucia in 1814.

        La Corbeille de Fruits

Paris: Tessari et Co, 1800. Engravings, printed in colours and finished by hand, by Duthé, after 'Huet fils'. A beautifully composed image recalling the bounty that the Fall brings, after an original by one of the three sons of Jean-Baptistse Huet The beautifully observed wicker-work basket bulges with the fruits of the harvest, their weight has made the container unsteady and some of the contents have spilled out onto the slate shelf on which this veritable cornucopia rests. A snail and a hornet investigate: apples, pears, grapes, chestnuts, cherries, tomatoes, white currents and a pomegranate are all available. This highly decorative image is from an original by 'Huet fils' (i.e. 'Huet son'). This narrows the field to three artists, all members of the highly talented French family whose members were active between about 1740 and 1830. Jean-Baptiste Huet (1745-1811) had three sons, all of whom are possible candidates: Nicolas Huet II, born in 1770, who flourished as an artist between about 1788 and 1827, François Huet, born 1772 and died in London in 1813 and finally, Jean-Baptiste Huet II who was born in Paris on 29 December 1772. Because of the use of 'fils' Jean-Baptiste the second is the most likely candidate. Until his father's death the easiest way to differentiate the two artists of the same name would have been to call the younger 'the son'.

        Wood-Cock Shooting

London: Colnagi, 1800. Aquatint, printed in colours and finished by hand, by Robert Dodd. Backed to restore losses to margin and to repair large tear in the upper right portion of the print, and to repair tear in bottom margin. A wonderful, rustic English shooting scene Julius Cæsar Ibbetson "was apprenticed to John Fletcher, a ship-painter at Hull. Ibbetson attracted public attention by his designs for ship decoration and by some scenery painted for the Hull Theatre, and his success encouraged him to seek his fortune in London in 1777. He was forced at first to work for Mr. Clarke, a picture dealer in Leicester Fields, but was able at the same time to acquire a thorough acquaintance with the works and methods of Dutch artists, besides learning all the tricks of the trade... In 1780 he married... In 1785 he exhibited at the Royal Academy A View of Northfleet, and continued to exhibit during succeeding years. Becoming acquainted with Captain William Baillie and others, he was introduced into good society, and was patronised by the nobility. In 1788 he accepted a post in Colonel Cathcart's embassy to China. Cathcart, however, died at Java during the voyage, and Ibbetson returned to England. He made many drawings during the voyage, and obtained nautical experience, which he afterwards turned to account in his pictures, but was not able to obtain any remuneration on his return... He sought relief from his misery in dissipation and convivial society, after the example of his friend, George Morland... This only led to further embarrassments, and in 1798 he quitted London for Liverpool to escape his creditors. Ibbetson lived quietly for some time near Ambleside in Westmoreland, visiting Scotland in 1800... A sign painted by Ibbetson for an inn at Troutbeck, near Ambleside, had some notoriety... He suffered further pecuniary losses through the defalcations of a friend, but the number of his commissions now enabled him to free himself to some extent from debt. At the invitation of one of his chief patrons, Mr. William Danby of Swinton Park, Ibbetson settled near that place in Masham, Yorkshire. Here he spent the remainder of his days... As a painter in oil of cattle and pigs Ibbetson has hardly been excelled in England, even by Morland... In his landscape-painting Ibbetson somewhat resembled Richard Wilson, R.A. He also painted small portraits in a neat and rapid manner. His paintings of animals were much prized, especially in Yorkshire, where they are often to be met with in private houses. Benjamin West called him the Berghem of England. He also painted in water-colour in the old tinted method with great success." (DNB). Snelgrove, p. 111.

        The Blue Passion Flower

London, 1800. Hand-coloured and colour-printed aquatint, stipple and line engraving by Caldwell. Sheet size: 21 1/2 x 16 1/2 inches. One of the most strikingly beautiful flower plates ever to be printed in England. "[Passiflora caerulea L.] The species of Passion Flower depicted in this plate, a native of Brazil and Peru and known in Europe since 1699, was the first discovered that was hardy in the cooler regions of the earth and could therefore, in Thornton's time, when glasshouses were less common, be more easily grown over a larger area of the world. Its flowers are only faintly scented and last but one day, but they are produced over several months, and plants flowering first in June often continue until October. In this plate both flowers and leaves have been depicted by the painter, Philip Reinagle, with life-like accuracy and engraved by Caldwell with a masterly fidelity. The delicate stipple of the flowers and their modelling, and that of the leaves is of a standard not often reached." (Ronald King, The Temple of Flora by Robert Thornton, 1981, p. 80) Thornton's The Temple of Flora is the greatest English colour-plate flower book. "...[Thornton] inherited a competent fortune and trained as a doctor. He appears to have had considerable success in practice and was appointed both physician to the Marylebone Dispensary and lecturer in medical botany at Guy's and St. Thomas's hospitals. But quite early in his career he embarked on his...great work. What Redouté produced under the patronage of L'Héritier, Marie Antoinette, the Empress Josephine, Charles X, and the Duchesse de Berry, Thornton set out to do alone... Numerous important artists were engaged...twenty-eight paintings of flowers commissioned from Abraham Pether, known as `Moonlight Pether,' Philip Reinagle, ...Sydenham Edwards, and Peter Henderson...The result...involved Thornton in desperate financial straits...In an attempt to extricate himself he organized the Royal Botanic Lottery, under the patronage of the Prince Regent...It is easy to raise one's eyebrows at Thornton's unworldly and injudicious approach to publishing...But he produced...one of the loveliest books in the world." (Alan Thomas, Great Books and Book Collecting , pp.142-144) Second state of three of this plate from The Temple of Flora . "Three very definite states...First state: the main stem and the stems of the bud and the leaf in the upper centre have a pronounced shadow with hard outlines. The dark patch of shading to the left of the base of the column has a hard upper edge. The part of the leaf to the right of the fruit is in aquatint only and so is the leaf projecting to the left beyond the column. The dark shading to the right of the column above the leaf has a jagged edge and the cloud above has an indistinct edge. Second state: the shadows of the stems of the upper centre are smaller and the edges are softer. The dark patch of shading is softened. The aquatint on the leaves mentioned above is strengthened with cross-hatched lines. There are added horizontal lines on the base of the column near the fruit. Third state...aquatint on the leaves and buds; the indistinct cloud has now a white edge, and there is...line rework[sic.] on many of the leaves. The flowers are no longer all printed in colours as before." (Handasyde Buchanan, Thornton's Temple of Flora , London, 1951, p.18).
