Catalogue of Stars, taken from Mr. Flamsteed's Observations contained in the Second Volume of the Historia Coelestis, and not inserted in the British Catalogue. With an Index, to point out Every Observation in that Volume belonging to the Stars of the British Catalogue. To which is added, a Collection of Errata that should be noticed in the Same Volume…with Introductory and Explanatory Remarks to Each of Them. By William Herschel…published by Order, and at the Expence, of the Royal Society

One engraved plate. 136 pp., one leaf of errata. Folio, cont. grey boards (carefully rebacked & recornered by Trevor Lloyd), spine gilt. London: P. Elmsly, 1798. First edition of this important star catalogue which served as a supplement to Flamsteed's Historiae Coelestis Britannicae (1725) and thus remained an essential tool for astronomers for many years. This is a fine copy from the Royal Society of Edinburgh with their discrete stamp and equally discrete ownership inscription on title. Caroline Herschel (1750-1848), the younger sister of William, was his essential assistant in astronomical work for half a century. Independently, she became a major astronomer, discovering three new nebulae and no fewer than eight comets. "Caroline was an indispensable member of a most remarkable team that, in one of the greatest campaigns known to observational astronomy, swept the whole of the visible sky. In twenty years of unremitting toil, brother and sister increased the number of known nebulae from about a hundred to 2500."-ODNB. "In 1782 William gave up music for astronomy and moved to the neighborhood of Windsor Castle; Caroline accompanied him, thereby ending her musical career. William now encouraged Caroline to 'sweep' for comets on her own account; and in 1783, while doing this she found three new nebulae, including the companion to the Andromeda nebula. But soon William was himself committed to sweeping for nebulae, and at night Caroline was often required to be on hand to write down his observations. In the daytime, besides managing the household and entertaining visitors, she carried out the extensive routine calculations, prepared catalogs and papers for publication, and even ground and polished mirrors…Between 1786 and 1797 she discovered no fewer than eight comets, thus earning a reputation as an astronomer in her own right; and in 1798 her revision of Flamsteed's catalog of stars was published by the Royal Society."-D.S.B., VI, pp. 322-23. "The standard catalogue of stars was the British Catalogue of John Flamsteed, published in 1725. William had found his work increasingly hampered by errors in the catalogue, and in 1796 he persuaded Caroline to assemble a list of these errors, a task that took her twenty months. Her list, with an index to Flamsteed's observations, was published by the Royal Society in 1798."-ODNB. Fine copy and quite scarce on the market.

(Vanderblue collection of Smithiana, p. 41. Carl Gustaf Lewenhaupt (1834-1908) ägde gården Aske i Håtuna socken i Uppland.

Bibliotheca danica II:589. Aberstén & Tiselius Göteborgs och Bohus län i litteratur, karta och bild 209. Aberstén Bibliographia Gothoburgensis 215. The rare portrait, engraved by Åkerland, lacking as usual. The English original was published in 1796 and the book was translated into Russian, Dutch and Portuguise, among other languages, at an early stage. Mary Wollstonecraft (1757-97) is today mostly known for her for her polemics against Burke in "A vindication of the rights of women" and she has, somewhat anachronistically, been called the first feminist. From Midsummer to October 1795 she made a business journey along the west coast of Sweden to Norway, which she described in letters to her then husband Gilbert Imlay. In the work she describes her impressions of Gothenburg, Uddevalla and Trollhättan, among other things. Magdalena Kiörning (1759-1810) was born in Härnösand and married the district judge Johan (Jan) Tideman from Jämtland in 1778. Carl Gustaf Lewenhaupt (1834-1908) owned the manor Aske in the parish of Håtuna in Uppland. His library contained some 10000 volumes and among the subjects were history, travel books, genealogy, heraldry and many pamphets from the Swedish Age of Freedom and the Gustavian Era.         Eigenh.

A Voyage of Discovery to the North Pacific Ocean, and Round the World; in which the coast of North-West America has been carefully examined and accurately surveyed. principally with a view to ascertain the existence of any navigable communication between the North Pacific and North Atlantic Oceans; and performed in the years 1790. [-] 1795, in the Discovery sloop of war, and the armed tender Chatham

printed for G.G. & J. Robinson and J. Edwards, [Edited by John Vancouver]. London 1798 - 4 volumes (including atlas vol. of plates and maps), quarto (11 5/8 x 9 1/8 inches) and folio (20 3/4 x 17 1/8 inches). Text: half-titles to vols.I and II, 3pp. errata at the end of vol.III. 1 engraved chart, 17 engraved plates (4 double-page). (Without half-titles). Atlas: 10 folding engraved charts, 6 engraved plates of coastal profiles. Expertly bound in uniform half calf over near-contemporary marbled paper-covered boards, the spines gilt in compartments with wide bands, the bands highlighted with gilt tooling, red and black morocco lettering pieces in two compartments, the others with repeat decoration in gilt Provenance: USS John Hancock (inscription at front of vols. I and II of the text, various annotations in the atlas volume ). "One of the most important [voyages] ever made in the interests of geographical knowledge" (Hill). This copy was in the on-board library of the USS John Hancock during its mid-19th century exploration of the Pacific. Vancouver was put in command of the expedition on the recommendation of his old commanding officer Alan Gardner. He had served earlier with both Admiral Rodney and on James Cook's second and third voyages, so was well equipped in terms of experience, in addition he was a first class navigator. The voyage was mounted as a `grand-scale expedition to reclaim Britain's rights, resulting from the Nootka Convention, at Nootka Sound, to thoroughly examine the coast south of 60º in order to find a possible passage to the Atlantic; and to learn what establishments had been founded by other powers. This voyage became one of the most important ever made in the interests of geographical knowledge. Vancouver sailed by way of the Cape of Good Hope to Australia, where he discovered King George's Sound and Cape Hood, then to New Zealand, Hawaii, and the northwest coast of America. In three seasons' work Vancouver surveyed the coast of California; visited San Francisco and San Diego . and other Spanish settlements in Alta California; settled the necessary formalities with the Spanish at Nootka; investigated the Strait of Juan de Fuca; discovered the Strait of Georgia; circumnavigated Vancouver Island; and disproved the existence of any passage between the Pacific and Hudson Bay.' (Hill Pacific Voyages [2004] p.623). This is an important association copy: the ink inscriptions in vol.I and II of this set, allied with the pencil inscriptions in the atlas volume, show that it formed part of the on-board reference library of the USS John Hancock, and was apparently assembled for the use of the USN Northern Pacific Survey Expedition of 1853-1856. Given the remit of the expedition (also known as the Rodgers-Ringgold Expedition) this work would have provided information that would have been vital in the planning and execution of any survey of the American North Pacific coast. John Rodgers (1812-1882), a member of one of the most distinguished U.S. Naval families, took command of the John Hancock in the spring of 1853, and sailed as part of the survey expedition in June of the same year. He remained in command until 1854 when he took over the leadership of the expedition as a whole and transferred to another ship in the squadron after Commander Cadwalader Ringgold was forced to relinquish command. An idea of the Expedition's achievements can be garnered from the fact the results of surveys were apparently still of use in the Second World War. John Rodgers went on to serve in the US Navy for a total of 54 years, reaching the rank of Rear Admiral, before dying, still a serving Naval officer, at the age of 70. Cowan (1914), p. 236 ("superior to any of its kind, and constitutes the chiefest source of authority of that period"); Cowan (1933), p. 654-655; Cox II, p.30 ("one of the most important voyages ever made in the interests of geographical knowledge"); Ferguson I, 281; Fitzpatrick Early Mapping of Hawai'i ("Vancouver's voyage resulted in the first published map of Hawai'i to depict the islands in their ent [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[Autograph Letter Signed] Timothy Pickering to the U S Consul at Cap-Français (Saint-Domingue), Jacob Mayer, on the XYZ Affair

Philadelphia, 1798. Very good, edge worn with one tear at the fold, not affecting text.. [2 pp]. 1 sheet. Signed by Timothy Pickering, dated Philadelphia, June 27, 1798 and written while Pickering was John Adams' Secretary of State -and shortly after the abortive American diplomatic commission sent to France the prior year in the hopes of avoiding war. The mission would become known as the XYZ Affair, after the three French diplomats who had demanded bribes and loans, and would be a contributing factor in the passage of the Alien and Sedition Acts. Pickering complains about the loyalty of pro-French Democratic-Republicans and specifically about Elbridge Gerry, who remained behind in France, while the other two American envoys, Charles Cotesworth Pinckney and John Marshall, were leaving. "Dear Sir, You must not judge the state of our country from the division you see in congress. The leading opposition numbers have committed themselves so far, it is not easy to retract their principles or their measure, and they have a number of devoted followers. I have no doubt that some of the former would rather see a revolution in our country & the power of France triumphant as it is in Holland, Switzerland, and Italy, than that the measures of our own government, which they have long and uniformly opposed by preserving our constitution and independence should succeed. With such views, you must know that there can be but few followers, except among the uninformed and deluded, who will eventually be set right. I enclose the last official dispatch from our envoys at Paris, and also one from Mr. Gerry, who preposterously determined to wait for orders from his government. These were just the beginning of April, addressed to all the envoys, from the possibility of their remaining in France. Yesterday, new orders were written to Mr. Gerry, giving him a positive recall. The president, in his message to Congress, you will see is decided...." Timothy Pickering (1745-1829) was a staunch Federalist, and much opposed to Gerry. In a letter to Washington about the negotiations called Gerry's conduct "very reprehensible" (Timothy Pickering to George Washington , 2 February 1799). Pickering's opposition to peace with France during the Quasi-War would lead to his dismissal by Adams. Jacob Mayer, who was named U.S. consul to the port of Cap-Français in May 1796, and to whom this letter was addressed, was in the difficult position of trying to encourage trade with the United States while guaranteeing the safety of American ships. Ten days after this letter, the U.S. would break off treaty arrangements with France and thus end all official trade with Saint-Domingue. Interestingly, Mayer would shortly accuse the consul general, Dr. Edward Stevens, of exploiting his office to benefit himself and Timothy Pickering, a charge which Pickering denied. Mayer was removed from office in May 1800. See MHS: Historical Index to the Pickering Papers, p.323.

Berlin, Johann Friedrich Unger, 1798. CONGRESSIONAL PUGILISTS [caption title].

Philadelphia. 1798. - Etching, 8 1/4 x 10 inches. Margins slightly trimmed, some spotting, two short closed marginal tears, contemporary ink chronology of the events leading to the fight. Overall very good. Mounted and framed. A famous cartoon depicting one of the most violent political episodes in the early history of the United States - the fight between Congressmen Matthew Lyon and Roger Griswold on the floor of the House of Representatives. The episode points out the roiling enmity between Jeffersonian Republicans and Federalists in the era of the Alien and Sedition Acts. The immediate cause of the brawl was a personal insult. Shortly after taking a vote on the impeachment of Senator William Blount, Matthew Lyon, a Republican Representative from Vermont, called into question the honor of Connecticut Federalists. Roger Griswold, a Connecticut Federalist, replied by recalling an incident in which Lyon had supposedly been forced to wear a wooden sword as a mark of cowardice while in the Continental Army. Lyon's response was to spit in Griswold's face, after which the Connecticut Federalist left the House chamber. Two weeks later, on Feb. 15, 1798, Griswold attacked Lyon with a hickory walking stick, at which point Lyon grabbed a pair of tongs from the fireplace in Congress Hall and defended himself. It is this scene that is depicted in the print, with Griswold swinging his walking stick and kicking at Lyon, and Lyon swinging back with the tongs while a throng in the chamber looks on excitedly. Three of the onlookers, House Speaker Jonathan Dayton and the Clerk and Chaplain of the House, are all identified by name in the edge of the print. Fowble notes that two different cartoons of the brawl between Lyon and Griswold were produced, the other entitled CUDGELING AS BY LATE ACT IN CONGRESS. The anonymous artist who created CONGRESSIONAL PUGILISTS so exaggerated the features of the onlookers that they needed to be identified at the edge of the image. Reilly, in his catalogue of American political prints in the Library of Congress, describes three different states of CONGRESSIONAL PUGILISTS. This copy conforms to the third state, with the address "S.E. Cor. 6th & Chesnut St." in the lower right corner and with the number "17" in the upper right. Of additional interest are the contemporary ink notations at bottom, being a timeline and related notes regarding Lyon and Griswold. The notes begin, "Jan. 1798 Matthew Lyon spat in Roger Griswold's face Feb. 15 Griswold assaults Lyon as above." A great American political cartoon of the Federalist Era, showing the deep enmity involved in the nation's politics, even at an early date. WEITENKAMPF, p.12. FOWBLE 329. MURRELL, pp.43, 45. REILLY 1798-1. SNYDER, pp.212-13. EVANS 33491. REESE, FEDERAL HUNDRED 70.

Artist: Homann Erben (d) ; issued in: Nuremberg; date: (d)1798 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 46,5 x 57,5; - description: Map shows northern Italy with the cities of Mailand, Parma, Modena, Verona, Mantua, Bologna and Rimini; - vita of the artist: Johann Babtiste Homann (1664-1724) was born in Oberkammlach, the Electorate of Bavaria. Although educated at a Jesuit school, and preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house.Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch.Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, which was in business until 1848. The company was known as Homann Erben, Homanniani Heredes, or Heritiers de Homann abroad.

Le Isole di Sandwich Delineate sulle Osservazioni Del Cap. Cook.

1798 - Rome, 1798. Original colour. 360 x 500mm. An excellent example The Sandwich Islands, with Cook's route around the islands marked. The map features a decorative vignette, showing Cook struggling with fierce Hawaiian natives, while another prepared to stab him in the back, with Cook's ship at anchor in the background. Issued in the scarce atlas, the 'Nuovo atlante geografico universale'. Undoubtedly this is the most decorative and sought after of all Hawaiian maps and the only decorative map based upon Cook's voyage to Hawaii.

1798 Frederick, Duke of York and Albany, Makes Recommendations to King George III

1798 - In this manuscript document signed by Frederick, Duke of York and Albany, as Commander-in-Chief in the summer of 1798, he makes recommendations for a number of specific military promotions: two in Light Dragoon regiments, and several more in various Foot regiments. The suggestions are "Most Humbly Proposed to His Majesty" (the Duke's father, King George III). Written on two 13 5/8" x 18 1/2" full sheets, each folded in half and tied together with a black ribbon on the blank left margin, the proposal covers five pages. The verso of the last sheet identifies the document as "Memorandae, Regulars: 25th July 1798." Frederick, the Duke of York and Albany (1763-1827), was the second-eldest son of King George III. A career military man, he created massive and important structural and administrative reforms as Commander-in-Chief, but was mostly ineffectual in the field. There are remnants of glue and paper transfer along close to four inches of the blank left margin on the first page, a 3/4" separation at the right edge of the central horizontal fold on each sheet, and smaller separations at the tops and bottoms of both vertical folds. There is also a small amount paper loss at the right edge of the uppermost horizontal fold of just the last page and some soil, particularly at the edges of the document and on the last page. Otherwise in very good condition. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
