Donna dell'Isola di Procida Nel Regno di Napoli

Leggero alone d'umidità in basso. To fight against the powerful English fleet, king Louis XIV decided to endow his ships with nautical charts that could enable them to compete with the enemy. The Neptune Francais, in 1693, can be considered a first attempt, but it was only at the beginning of the Eighteenth century that a campaign of study of the Mediterranean coasts and sea was started, leading to the realization of maps, collected in the Dépot des Cartes et Planes de la Marine in 1720. Nevertheless, the real founder of French hydrography can be considered Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703 - 1772), who served for more than fifty years the navy as engineer and cartographer, which win him first the title of "Hydrographer Engineer of the Navy" and then of "Royal Hydrographer". His first commitment was to study the French coasts fisrt, and then of the whole world. His production was massive and his nautical charts, due also to their quality, were published in many edition until the end of the XVIII century. This allowance led to the production and the selling of sea charts, at first based on those from Bellin, then developed by other navy engineers. The sea charts were sold separately, all bearing the stamp with the anchor and the crowns of the Depot Generale de la Marine. Collections of the same charts have been published under the name of Neptune Francois, a monumental work which has been reissued many times until the half of the following century. The following group of charts is taken from a volume entitled Neptune de la Méditerranée, about the Mediterranean sea. Where possible, there is the name of the cartographer, very often the captain of the ship, and the date of the chart. Engravings, in excellent condition. Parigi Paris 895 615

[No. 1412]

Nancy [France]: Chez Haener, Imprimeur du Départment de la Meurthe, 1792. First edition. Self wrappers. A very good copy with pin holes along inner margin, two soiled spots, signed in ink on last page.. 4 pp. Illus. with a woodcut headpiece. Signed (illegible). Law authorizing negotiation with the United States minister to obtain food and construction materials in the amount of 4,000,000 livres, to be paid by the French Treasury but to be reimbursed by taxes on the colony. The money was much needed as the loan decree, dated 26 Juin 1792, came in the midst of unparalleled upheaval in Haiti. The revolution of the year before, with its "horrible carnage" had now given way "to strategic military operations, tactical maneuvers and new political alliances as the slaves gain territory and stabilize their positions. They raid plantations for military equipment, loot the whites' forces after they are repelled, and trade with the Spanish for weaponry" (Kona Shen, History of Haiti, The Revolution Builds, Brown University. library.brown.edu/haitihistory/6.html). Toussaint Louverture is a rising star, Civil Commissions arrive from France, free blacks and mulattos in Saint-Domingue are granted equal political rights, Spain declares war on England and France, and battle ensues for control of Haiti. The U.S. is concerned with conditions on the island and in fact Jefferson writes of his concern to the Marquis de Lafayette (16 June 1792). Rare. OCLC, BN France, and other European Libraries locate no copies of this issue (No. 1412, with additional text concerning the Departement de la Meurthe). A Paris printing (No. 1813) can be found at Cornell, Univ. Minn., and JCB which also has a Toulouse printing. Manioc (Bibliotheque) shows a digitized version of the Paris imprint.

4to. Half red morocco. (later). Rare edition of this discourse by Bertrand de Moleville (1477-1818), French naval Minister, pronounced in front of the Assemblée as a defense against some accusations. Moleville was accused to help Navy officers from the French nobility to emigrate. The discourse is followed by the accusations (7parts). Fine copy of this text which shows the difficulties that the French Navy encounters after the Revolution.

The Holy Bible, containing the Old and New Testaments: translated out of the original tongues; and with the former translations diligently compared and revised.

New York: Printed & Sold by Hugh Gaine New York: Printed & Sold by Hugh Gaine 12mo (17 cm; 6.75"). [408] pp.. 1792 An early American Bible with a fascinating creation story. According to Margaret Hills, "The ruby type of this edition is said to have been set up in Scotland and imported [by Hugh Gaine] in page form, ready for printing. The type was apparently kept standing." It is said that Isaiah Thomas bought five hundred copies of this Bible in sheets, due to the delay in the completion of his school edition of the Bible. Provenance: Timothy Hall's family bible ca. 1800). Later in the Howell Bible Collection, Pacific School of Religion (properly released). Evidence of Readership (or Something else ? Engagement?): Former owners and their children have filled the blank endpapers with names and scribbles in pencil and ink; the New Testament title-page verso and an endpaper record important family dates, such as Timothy Hall's marriage to Elizabeth Morgan and Harry Harmon Hall's birth in 1801, while endpapers and blank sections of the Bible have provided scribble space and handwriting practice for Harry and a presumably different Timothy. => All of this endearing, none of it off-putting. 18th-century calf, spine with raised bands; well-rubbed with leather crackled and loss at spine extremities, especially to top compartment. Ex-library as above, light pencilling on t.-p., pencilled call number and accession number on title-page verso; family penmanship and genealogical contributions as noted. One torn corner, a short tear on N.T. title-page, a handful of leaves trimmed closely with loss of a letter per line; light to moderate age-toning with the occasional spot. => An interesting Bible bibliographically, and a "family" Bible in every sense.

        Le Isole Antille

FIRST EDITION, CONTEMPORARY OUTLINE COLOUR - The Italian painter and engraver, Giovanni Maria Cassini, produced this interesting map of of the Cairbbean and south tip of Florida. Florida is shown as an archipelago. Published in: Nuovo atlante geografico universale delineato sulle ultime osservazioni. Roma, Calcografia camerale, 1792 - 1801. Cassini was geographer and cartographer but he was also good at engraving architectural items and perspectives - he was one of the best disciples Giovanni Battista Piranesi had. Moreover, Cassini was one of the last artists to engrave spheres in the XVIII century and his globes were quite famous and widespread, and realized the most important Italian Atlas of the XVIII century; his maps always bear a cartouche, extremely rich in colours and details. Copperplate with fine original hand colour, some foxing, otherwise in very good condition. Roma Rome 497 365

Rare first edition of one of the principal early works of utopian socialism, at the same time the first printing of the famous Mozart cantata "Die ihr des unermeßlichen Weltalls Schöpfer ehrt". - Ziegenhagen had amassed a considerable fortune as a cloth merchant before founding an agricultural reform colony in Billwerder near Hamburg in 1788. In his present work Ziegenhagen recommends building further colonies of this kind, based on common property, careful planning and collective life, which were to ensure their residents freedom, social security and general abundance. Ziegenhagen appealed to the gentry, wealthy citizens and the French convent to support his plans. - Excellent copy, entirely untrimmed on two edges, in an attractive contemporary binding, clean and spotless throughout. Endpapers and cover paper restored around 1910 by Ferdinand Bakala, probably Vienna's greatest bookbinder of the time. - Very rare, in contrast to the later editions. Lanck./Oehler II, 119-120 and 214. Rümann 1299. Schröder 4549, 1. Bauer 1551-54. Engelmann 664-667. Mozart: KV 619. RISM M 4161. Wolfstieg 4161. Not in Menger or Kress.

Autograph quotation signed. [Königsberg], 2. III. 1792.

1792. 1 p. Matted (ca. 100 x 55 mm), glazed and framed (250 x 250 mm). A quotation in Latin, taken from the maxims of Publilius Syrus and frequently used in friendship albums by Kant in his more advanced age: "Ad poenitendum properat, cito qui iudicat" ("He who is quick to judge hastens toward repenting"), followed by six neatly spaced and centered lines, all in his own hand, which read, translated: "Immanuel Kant, full professor of logics and metaphysics in Königsberg, senior of the philosophical faculty, member of the Berlin Royal Academy of Sciences, on the 2nd day of March 1792."

"Hymne der Freyheit". Eigenh. Manuskript mit U. ("J. H. Voß"). [Wohl Eutin, 1792/1793].

1792. 3 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 4to. Wasserzeichen: Zweistrichige Antiquaversalien "HR".

Autograph letter signed. Rome, 18. XI. 1792.

1792. 4to. 2 pp. on bifolium. To Christoph Martin Wieland in Weimar, who had asked her for illustrations: Kauffmann's only known letter to Wieland, long considered lost. - Duchess Anna Amalia of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach had travelled Italy between 1788 and 1790; she had been Kauffmann's neighbor in Rome. It was through her intermediation that Wieland wrote to Kauffmann on 6 September 1792, asking her for "one or two" drawings for his "Oberon", to be published in his Collected Works. While Maierhofer (A. K., Gesammelte Briefe [Lengwil 2001]) maintained that nothing was known of an answer to this request (cf. p. 432), the present letter shows that the artist was most happy to collaborate on the project. Nothing was to come of all this: although Wieland's publisher Göschen duly suggested two subjects for Kauffmann, the illustrator Johann Heinrich Ramberg threatened to withdraw his efforts if any other artists were employed. - Provenance: collection of Count Victor Wimpffen, Rome, in 1900. In July of that year, Eduard Fischer von Röslerstamm obtained permission for the Graz scholar Bernhard Seuffert to copy the letter; this copy, now in the Wieland-Museum in Biberach, served as the basis for the text published by the critical edition. Perfectly preserved. Wielands Briefwechsel (ed. S. Scheibe), vol. 11, no. 359 ("location unknown").

Translated by Jean-Henri Castéra (1749-1838). Paris, F. Buisson, an 6 de la République (1798).

1792. 4 vols. 8vo. (4), VIII, 515, (1) pp. (4), 412 pp. (4), 399, (1) pp. (4), 326 pp. With frontispieces in each volume and 3 large folding engraved maps at the end of vol. 4. Contemporary tree calf, smooth spines gilt. Marbled endpapers. First French edition of Staunton's "Authentic Account of an Embassy to China, chiefly from the papers of Lord Macartney and Sir E. Gower": the official account of the first English embassy to China under Macartney made by the secretary George Staunton, first published in London in 1797. "Great Britain was anxious to establish formal diplomatic relations with China and thus open the way for unimpeded trade relations. But the pall of Chinese reserve and self-sufficiency, which for centuries seldom admitted penetration, still hung over this empire and effectually resisted Lord Macartney's arguments and gifts [...] His visit was not in vain, however, for it gave us a most interesting account of Chinese manners and customs at the close of the eighteenth century" (Cox I, 344). "The account of this famous embassy was prepared at government expense. Apart from its Chinese importance, it is of considerable interest, owing to the descriptions of the various places en route which were visited" (Hill). These places include Madeira, Tenerife, Rio de Janeiro, St Helena, Tristan da Cunha, Amsterdam Island, Java, Sumatra, Cochin-China, etc. The second French edition, published the following year, was to include two additional volumes. - Minor wear to joints and extremities. From the library of Jean R. Perrette with his bookplate on the pastedown. Corder (Sinica) IV, 2384. Cox I, 345. Quérard IX, 289. Cf. Hill, pp. 280f. (first edition).
