Manuscript Writ Regarding the Arrest of an Ohio Pioneer, Signed by Sheriff Col. E. Sproat & Others

Marietta, 1792. Manuscript capias from the Court of Common Pleas, for Washington County, Ohio, for the detainment and conveyance to the court, of an individual associated with the Ohio Company. Qto. Single leaf, written recto and verso, measuring approximately 12 x 7.5 inches. Document is signed in the original by two important parties, the clerk and the first sheriff of Ohio Territory. Some foxing, fraying to edges and creases, otherwise in very good condition, with red wax seal in tact. A succinct manuscript court document involving several key figures who settled and founded the city of Marietta, as representatives of the Ohio Company, evidently finding themselves at odds before the court. Soliciting the arrest of a man of the Ohio Company, for charges being laid by another man from the company, executed and signed by two contemporary associates of the same company, this record forms an interesting account for the annals of both the city of Marietta and the pioneering Ohio Company of Associates. Curiously, plaintiff Charles Green, defendant Robert Potts, the arresting sheriff Ebenezer Sproat, and signing clerk R.J. Meigs, arrived together on the same day, all with the Ohio Company, at the mouth of the Muskingum River in April 1788. In the court case "Green vs Potts" the plaintiff is claiming from the defendant damages of $400, to which will be added fees and further damages for failing to appear at a first hearing. Sheriff Sproat succeeds with the apprehension, keeps Potts in captivity for a few months, and delivers him to the court in March 1793 for his court appearance. The document is witnessed by Joseph Gilman - first Judge of the Court at Marietta, signed by court clerk (prothonotary) Return Jonathan Meigs, and also signed by the Territory of Ohio's first sheriff Colonel Ebenezer Sproat. .

The Marches of The British Armies in the Peninsula of India during the Campaigns of 1790 and 1791. Illustrated and Explained by Reference to a Map, Compiled from Authentic Documents transmitted by Earl Cornwallis from India by Major Rennell.

London: W. Bulmer and Co. for the Author, 1792 - Octavo. Recent sprinkled half calf, marbled boards, red morocco label, low bands, foliate tool to the compartments. Small professional repair to the fore-edge of the title page, no loss of text, light browning, else very good. Folding plan of the Battle of Seringapatam, more properly Arakere, and 3 folding Orders of Battle. Second edition, same year as the first. Third Anglo-Mysore War. Uncommon, and detailed account drawn from official accounts of Cornwallis and Medows's campaigns against Tipu Sultan down to the Battle of Arakere in May 1791. Tipu's army was routed and retreated into Seringapatam, but the British forces were forced to return to Bangalore by the problems of supply that had dogged the entire campaign. The map referred to on the title page was issued separately, and is "lacking" from all copies listed on OCLC, which locates just a single copy, the India Office Records copy in BL. "The father of Indian geography", Rennell served with both the East India Company's marine and military as surveyor and draughtsman, in the 1780s producing a series of maps, atlases and memoranda which were much reprinted and set the standard for future works. Peter( Heinrich Lambert} von Hess 1792-1871, was a German painter, known for historic paintings, especially of the Napoleonic Wars and the Greek War of Independence. In 1833, at Ludwig's request, he accompanied Otto of Greece to the newly formed Kingdom of Greece, where at Athens he gathered materials for pictures of the war of liberation. He stayed nine months in Greece, interviewing heroes and eyewitnesses of the 1821 revolution. His first- hand knowledge of the heroes gives power to his work. He drew 39 historical persons The sketches which he then made were placed, forty in number, in the Pinakothek, after being copied in wax on a large scale by Nilsen, in the northern arcades of the Hofgarten at Munich, [sadly now destroyed]. It should be noted that Hess was not present during the Revolution; the paintings are representations of reported events. many are of Greek victories, or of heroic deaths of the Greek leaders.         Andrew Kippis, D.D. F.R.S. & S.A

London,: Thos. Macklin, 20 October, 1792.. Stipple engraving, 290 x 210 mm., very good. An uncommon portrait of Cook's great first biographer, stipple-engraved by the great artist Bartolozzi, famous for his role in producing many of the engravings relating to Cook's third voyage, including a portrait of Cook and the famous separately-issued death scene at Kealekekua.Reverend Andrew Kippis (1725-1795) was an antiquarian and writer who wrote the most important biography of Cook, published in 1788. Like the other two main landlubber writers who worked on Cook's voyages, John Hawkesworth and the Canon John Douglas, Kippis and his biography have attracted some criticism, but its importance to the legacy of Cook is immeasureable, not least because some version remained the standard biography, endlessly reprinted, for over a century. The engraving was made by William Artaud, and is the first portrait of Kippis recorded by the UK National Portrait Gallery.Beddie, 32; Davidson, 'A Book Collector's Notes', p. 67; Hocken, pp. 26-7; Holmes, 69; Kroepelien, 647; Lada-Mocarski, 40; O'Reilly-Reitman, 455.

        The Sportsman's Return

London: Published by Thomas Macklin, Poet's Gallery, Fleet Street, Dec. 20, 1792. Colour-printed mezzotint. In fair condition with the exception of being trimmed within the plate mark and remargined. Image size: 17 15/16 x 23 9/16 inches. 19 3/4 x 25 5/8 inches. A nice colour printed impression of Ward's idyllic print, a fond reflection of English rural life, after a painting by George Morland. A hunter shows off the hare he has just shot to a shoe repair man, who has a neat little adjunct to the tavern, in which he can sit but not stand up. Another man ties up his horse. It seems to be a moment chosen almost at random in the pleasant life that surrounds the country public house. George Morland was one of the most successful genre painters of his time, creating, during his industrious career, some of England's most cherished paintings. At an early age Morland displayed his artistic genius, he learned to paint at three and exhibited his first work at the Royal Academy at the mere age of ten. He was a prodigious painter, producing more than 4000 paintings during the entirety of his career, and sometimes painting two or three works in a day. His beautiful idealistic scenes were a favorite source of inspiration for contemporary engravers, and as many as 250 separate engravings were done of his paintings during his lifetime. His brother-in- law, William Ward, engraved a great number of his paintings reproducing in print his endearing paintings of English country life. Ward's engravings after Morland are some of the most beautiful prints of the period; they combine fine technical skill and inspired artistic imagination to create enduring images that speak of the taste and beauty of the age.

        Politiska antekningar.

Första stycket. Skrifvit på D---a af T- i december år 1792. Med några tilökningar sedermera. Skara, F. J. Leverentz, 1799. 4:o. 56 s. & 3 utvikbara grav. plr.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]
