        The Sportsman's Return

London: Published by Thomas Macklin, Poet's Gallery, Fleet Street, Dec. 20, 1792. Colour-printed mezzotint. In fair condition with the exception of being trimmed within the plate mark and remargined. Image size: 17 15/16 x 23 9/16 inches. 19 3/4 x 25 5/8 inches. A nice colour printed impression of Ward's idyllic print, a fond reflection of English rural life, after a painting by George Morland. A hunter shows off the hare he has just shot to a shoe repair man, who has a neat little adjunct to the tavern, in which he can sit but not stand up. Another man ties up his horse. It seems to be a moment chosen almost at random in the pleasant life that surrounds the country public house. George Morland was one of the most successful genre painters of his time, creating, during his industrious career, some of England's most cherished paintings. At an early age Morland displayed his artistic genius, he learned to paint at three and exhibited his first work at the Royal Academy at the mere age of ten. He was a prodigious painter, producing more than 4000 paintings during the entirety of his career, and sometimes painting two or three works in a day. His beautiful idealistic scenes were a favorite source of inspiration for contemporary engravers, and as many as 250 separate engravings were done of his paintings during his lifetime. His brother-in- law, William Ward, engraved a great number of his paintings reproducing in print his endearing paintings of English country life. Ward's engravings after Morland are some of the most beautiful prints of the period; they combine fine technical skill and inspired artistic imagination to create enduring images that speak of the taste and beauty of the age.

        Politiska antekningar.

Första stycket. Skrifvit på D---a af T- i december år 1792. Med några tilökningar sedermera. Skara, F. J. Leverentz, 1799. 4:o. 56 s. & 3 utvikbara grav. plr.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

John Howard (1726-90) was a philanthropist who became a major force in improving the appalling conditions in prisons of his time. As high sheriff of Bedfordshire, Howard insisted on inspecting the local gaol and was dismayed by the squalor he found there; he was also distressed by the tradition of making gaolers dependent upon fees assessed against the prisoners for their livelihood rather than treating them as salaried employees of the county. This practice resulted in many prisoners being wrongly detained because they were unable to pay the fees, and Howard demanded that the county government begin paying gaolers salaries. Challenged by the authorities to find another British prison that did so, he began travelling to prisons all over England. Although he found no counties with salaried gaolers, his travels acquainted him with what he saw as conditions so alarming that he resolved to embark on a campaign of prison reform. His report to the House of Commons in 1774 resulted in the immediate passing of two acts abolishing jailers' fees and setting standards for sanitary practices and treatment of prisoners. Determined to find better methods for administering prisons and reducing recidivism, Howard set off at his own expense to examine the prisons of other European countries. His findings were published in the present "State of Prisons," first published in 1777 and called by "Printing and the Mind of Man" the "first major practical work on the subject." In it, Howard credited the reformatory aspect of prisons in the Low Countries for the lower crime rate there, and made recommendations for implementing similar practices in British prisons. In response, Parliament passed a bill providing for the establishment of two "penitentiaries," where efforts would be made to rehabilitate criminals. Howard continued his travels and inspections, spending £30,000 of his own money. Subsequent editions of the "State of Prisons" issued in 1780 and 1784 incorporated the reports from these endeavors. Our edition was published after Howard's death (from gaol fever, contracted while touring Russian military prisons) as part of a two-volume set of his works. The other volume, "An Account of the Principal Lazarettos in Europe," looks at the conditions both in hospitals dedicated to treatment of "lazars," i.e., persons with "loathsome" diseases like plague, and in the facilities in ports used to quarantine those arriving from infected areas. Howard's dedication to improving the lot of the most unfortunate and forgotten members of society was truly remarkable: when denied access to lazarettos in Venice, he booked passage to the city on a ship with a certificate of "foul health," thus guaranteeing he would be sent to quarantine in a lazaretto and could report on the conditions he found there. In all of his studies of prisons, Howard stressed the importance of cleanliness in ameliorating suffering and preventing further disease. One can find copies of one edition or another of Howard's two main books, but they are uncommonly seen together; our 1792-91 edition of the "Works" seems to be listed only twice by ABPC since 1975.

'Hints Respecting Botany Bay' [in] Miscellanies in Prose and VerseÖ

Edinburgh,: J. Robertson, 1792.. Octavo, 336 pp.; a very good copy in nineteenth-century half calf over marbled boards, rubbed. Rare, with an early essay on Botany Bay by a Scottish judge and therefore providing some insight into the reaction of the legal profession to the realities of transportation: 'the Botany-bay scheme is the most absurd, prodigal and impracticable vision that ever intoxicated the mind of man.'Lord Gardenstone (1721-1793) was a distinguished judge, bon vivant and a wonderful eccentric noted for his fondness for pigs: he was 'distinguished for his conviviality, at a period when, especially in Scotland, it must be admitted that real proficiency was requisite to procure fame in that qualification' (Robert Chambers, A Biographical Dictionary of Eminent Scotsmen, 1835). He also found time to be an occasional writer, and this is a charming selection of some of his pensÈes and poems, which unsurprisingly includes a rollicking ode 'On Hard Drinking.'In his 'Hints on Botany Bay', Lord Gardenstone takes as his starting point the contemporary reports that some 2029 convicts had been transported prior to 18 March 1791, at a cost of £374,000 beside some unrecorded "contingencies". He was astounded by the excessively high cost of hundreds of pounds per convict, especially when there was no hint that the costs would abate; Gardenstone recommended instead the adoption of the Panopticon as devised by the great penal theorist Jeremy Bentham. To those who would argue that the colony would become quickly self-sufficient, he noted that such dreams of agriculture in Sydney were unconvincing when one realised that Governor Phillip's exploring party took five days 'to penetrate thirty miles into the desart' - evidence, by the way, that he had read Phillip's account. This is the second edition, although copies of the first edition appear to be very thin on the ground indeed (no copy of any first edition is recorded by the English Short Title Catalogue, suggesting that the "first" edition may well be a publisher's puff). Ferguson recorded copies of this second edition in the Mitchell Library and the National Library of Australia.Ferguson, 136.

De Viribus Electricitatis In Motu Musculari

Modena, Apud Societatem Typographicum,, 1792. Commentarius cum Joannis Aldini dissertatione et notis. Accesserunt Epistolae ad animalis electricitatis theoriam pertinentes. Quarto (277 × 192 mm). Early nineteenth-century calf-backed boards. Housed in a green flat back cloth solander box made by The Chelsea Bindery. 3 folding engraved plates. Manuscript index at the end. Extremities rubbed, title-page and a few other pages lightly spotted, K1 on a guard, a good firm copy. First separate edition, first issue with caption "E" in fig. 22 uncorrected, printed in black. Galvani's theory of "animal electricity" demonstrated the main phenomenon of galvanism: "the production of electric current from the contact of two different metals in a moist environment" (DSB). Galvani, however, did not interpret his experiments in this way, but instead saw them as confirmation of the eighteenth-century theory that animals contain in their muscles and nerves a fluid similar to electricity. His theory was first published in 1791, in volume 7 of De Bononiensi scientiarum et artium instituto atque academia. This separate edition was edited by Giovanni Aldini, Galvani's nephew, who included his own theory of animal electricity in his preface. The plates are found printed in either sanguine or black, with most of the plates in sanguine in their first, uncorrected state, leading Fulton and Stanton to claim priority for the sanguine issue. However, the present copy is one of a few to contain the plates in their first, uncorrected state and in black.

First edition of this handsomely illustrated work which describes the cultivation of the land to grow flax, and the entire process -- harvesting, retting, breaking, scutching, cleaning, spinning, weaving, and bleaching -- of flax to manufacture linen. The twelve plates depict methods of cultivation and processing of flax, including the tools employed and workers in contemporary dress. Flax was, without any competitor, the most important of all vegetable fibers until the close of the 18th century when cotton took its place as the supreme vegetable fiber of commerce. Trecco (1747-1830), abbot at the cathedral at Vicenza, was greatly interested in improving the agricultural methods used in Italy. His tireless efforts won him considerable local fame.
