        Andrew Kippis, D.D. F.R.S. & S.A

London: Thos. Macklin, 20 October, 1792. Stipple engraving, 290 x 210 mm., very good. Earliest major portrait of Cook's biographer. An uncommon portrait of Cook's great first biographer, stipple-engraved by the great artist Bartolozzi, famous for his role in producing many of the engravings relating to Cook's third voyage, including a portrait of Cook and the famous separately-issued death scene at Kealekekua. Reverend Andrew Kippis (1725-1795) was an antiquarian and writer who wrote the most important biography of Cook, published in 1788. Like the other two main landlubber writers who worked on Cook's voyages, John Hawkesworth and the Canon John Douglas, Kippis and his biography have attracted some criticism, but its importance to the legacy of Cook is immeasureable, not least because some version remained the standard biography, endlessly reprinted, for over a century. The engraving was made by William Artaud, and is the first portrait of Kippis recorded by the UK National Portrait Gallery.

L’Amerique Septentrional et Meridionale divisée Suivant Ses Différens Pays.

1792 - Delamarche, Paris, c. 1792, coloured, 1130 x 980mm. Backed on linen. A decorative large scale map of the Americas. In the lower right corner is a large, beautifully engraved title cartouche by Arrivet in the rococo style, featuring American flora and fauna including alligators and macaws. Originally published around 1760, the plate was purchased before 1786 by Charles Delamarche, who heavily revised it to show the new political alignments in North America that resulted from the Treaty of Paris (1783). The new United States, plus Spanish Louisiana, Florida and Nouveau Mexique are carefully delineated, and the watersheds of the Missouri and other Great Plains rivers are surprisingly well-drawn. In the Pacific Northwest a great inland sea is labeled 'Entrée de Martin d’Aguilar en 1603'. With an inset in the bottom left hand corner of Hudson and Baffin bays.

Archery. Plate 1; Archery. Plate 2

Robert Sayer & Co, London 1792 - A fine highly decorative pair of anonymous mezzotints. By the middle of the seventeenth century the bow was no longer considered a viable weapon of war in Europe, although as late as 1808 Napoleon's army in Poland faced a force including 1500 archers on horseback. However, Archery as a sport survived and prospered and a number of quite exclusive toxophilic societies were formed. Through the eighteenth and much of the nineteenth century, archery enjoyed an enviable reputation as a genteel pursuit that both men and women could take part in with decorum. The present pair of plates depicts two archery matches: the first, a men's match, shows the four male contestants dressed in the uniform of their society. The central figure is just about to release an arrow at an unseen but clearly distant target. His companions stand around, another stretched canvas target just behind the central bowman. The second image, of a ladies' match, shows four contestants all dressed in similar costume. The central figure, standing behind one target, draws her bow and looks to the distance where a man standing by the second target signals where her last arrow hit. Mezzotints.

A Voyage to the South Sea , undertaken by Command of His Majesty, for the purpose of conveying the Bread-fruit Tree to the West Indies, in His Majesty's Ship the Bounty... including an account of the mutiny on board the said ship, and the subsequent voyage of part of the Crew, in the Ship's Boat, from Tifoa, one of the Friendly Islands, to Timor, a Dutch settlement in the East Indies

London: Printed for George Nicol, 1792. Quarto, with frontispiece portrait, and seven plans and charts, a very fine copy, clean and large, with almost none of the offsetting normally endemic to this work; modern half crimson morocco, by the Parisian binder Devauchelle, cloth slipcase with morocco edges. First edition: the famous mutiny. First edition of one of the most famous of all voyage books: "extremely important" (Hill). This is the full official narrative of Bligh's voyage in the Bounty and the mutiny. At the time of publication Bligh was on his second breadfruit voyage, and the work was edited for the press by James Burney, with the assistance of Sir Joseph Banks, both of whom had also sailed with Cook. This full account of the voyage includes a slightly altered version of Bligh's own account of the mutiny, which had first been published two years earlier. This extended and revised text makes this the fundamental published account of the Bounty saga, and an important eighteenth-century document of Pacific voyaging, most especially for the second phase of European relations with Tahiti. This is a particularly good copy of this great book, in a most attractive binding. The Bounty mutiny and its ramifications would haunt Bligh always, although his reputation was for ever redeemed by the epic open-boat journey across 4,000 miles of the Pacific. The open-boat voyage, one of the most famous feats of seamanship of all time, was also notable for the coastal discoveries made almost accidentally in the course of the desperate voyage. Bligh's description here is accompanied by his important engraved chart of discoveries made on the coast of present-day Queensland. His achievement in charting large sections of the coast under conditions of terrible hardship partly completed the work of Cook himself on the Australian east coast. Bligh was justifiably proud of his achievements in mapping and charting during his travails, and each of the printed charts features his name prominently: the sketch of Matavai Bay in Tahiti even features his signature in facsimile (particularly notable given Bligh's fury that his work on the charts of Cook's third voyage was not recognised). The advertisement to this work not only notes the publication of the rare partial edition for those who had already purchased the 1790 Narrative separately, it also comments that Bligh had originally intended to issue his account of the first part of the voyage of the Bounty as a separate work. Bligh had, of course, issued the Narrative quickly, noting here that this haste 'was for the purpose of communicating early information concerning an event which had attracted the public notice: and being drawn up in a hasty manner, it required many corrections.'.

Voyages to the Coast of Africa By Mess. Saugnier and Brisson: Containing an Account of Their Shipwreck on Board Different Vessels, and Subsequent Slavery, and Interesting Details of The Manners of the Arabs of The Desert, and of The Slave Trade

London: Printed for G. G. J. and J. Robinson, 1792. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the first UK edition, first printing (translated from the original French), in the Publisher's original paper-covered boards with the title written upon the spine (surface, edge, and corner rubbing to the boards, some presumed repair where the boards meet the spine) and wearing a custom-made dust jacket (not original to the book which likely would not have had a dust jacket when published), complete with the folding map of Africa (with slight tape repair to a couple of the folds); Saugnier and Brisson's fascinating account of their travels along the northern and western coasts of Africa and containing with information on the 18th century slave trade, as well as an account of their being shipwrecked and captured. Having an interesting Provenance, this copy belonged to Nathaniel George Clayton, successor to John Clayton in ownership of an Estate containing a portion of Hadrian's Wall which itself included the fort of Chesters, the best-preserved Roman cavalry fort in Britain, and carries his bookplate to the front pastedown. John Clayton was on of the most important figures in the preservation of Hadrian's Wall and Chesters, one of a series of forts built during the construction of the Wall, and the appearance of the ruins is due primarily to excavations conducted by John Clayton at the site. John Clayton died childless and the Estate descended to his nephew, Nathaniel George Clayton, a prior owner of this book. Nathaniel George Clayton carried out the last major excavations at Chesters in the 1890s and the ruins of the structures are a noted tourist site. This copy also carries the ownership signature of Bridget Atkinson of Temple Sowerby on the title page. Both the Claytons and the Atkinsons were important families of the area, with the Atkinsons having established themselves there at least as early as the 16th Century and having become a successful and wealthy family owning property both in Cumbria and Plantations in Jamaica. Ownership of the Plantations entailed ownership of Slaves, and this book would, of course, have been of great interest to the Atkinsons. Copies of the book are quite scarce to the market and copies in their original boards are extremely so. A Very Good copy in the difficult-to-find original boards with and notable Provenance. QUITE SCARCE INDEED. [Note: For more information on Temple Sowerby and the Atkinsons, Google "A Short History of Temple Sowerby House". For more information on Chesters, Google "History of Chesters Roman Fort" as well as "Chesters Roman Fort on Hadrian's Wall, Northumberland".]

Opera , cum variis lectionibus, notis variorum, et indice locupletissimo

London: Payne and Edwards, 1792-, 1793. Two volumes, quarto, with a portrait frontispiece; spine of one volume slightly chipped, joints a little split but quite firm, nonetheless a splendid set in contemporary tree calf, flat spines with gilt panelling, red and green morocco labels. The London Horace. Fine and scholarly printing of Horace: 'a very magnificent and valuable edition; the text of which is formed chiefly on that of Gesner' (Moss, Manual of Classical Bibliography). A contemporary evaluation in the Critical Review of 1796 applauds the quality of this edition: 'With regard to the typographical merits of the present work, they must be acknowledged to be great. It is printed on fine wove paper; the type is excellent, and the press-work is extremely clear and neat. The margin is also spacious, and the arrangement such as does the printers much credit.' One of the most beloved Roman poets, Horace is cherished for his elegant poetry and robust satire, combining humorous self-reflection with philosophy: 'His style is rather to tell the truth through laughter, and not only to show others the way but also to work at improving himself and making himself more acceptable to his fellow human beings (Oxford Classical Dictionary). Aside from the quality of its printing and composition, the London Horace of 1792-1793 is noted for its exhaustive commentaries. Accordingly, this 'variorum' edition compares and publishes known textual variations (in collating the known texts of Horace the editor consulted the first printed edition of 1470 alongside seven manuscript copies held in the Harleian Collection).

Hints Respecting Botany Bay' [in] Miscellanies in Prose and Verse?

      J. Robertson, Edinburgh 1792 - Octavo, 336 pp.; a very good copy in nineteenth-century half calf over marbled boards, rubbed. 'The most absurd, prodigal and impracticable vision?'. Rare, with an early essay on Botany Bay by a Scottish judge and therefore providing some insight into the reaction of the legal profession to the realities of transportation: 'the Botany-bay scheme is the most absurd, prodigal and impracticable vision that ever intoxicated the mind of man.' Lord Gardenstone (1721-1793) was a distinguished judge, bon vivant and a wonderful eccentric noted for his fondness for pigs: he was 'distinguished for his conviviality, at a period when, especially in Scotland, it must be admitted that real proficiency was requisite to procure fame in that qualification' (Robert Chambers, A Biographical Dictionary of Eminent Scotsmen, 1835). He also found time to be an occasional writer, and this is a charming selection of some of his pensées and poems, which unsurprisingly includes a rollicking ode 'On Hard Drinking.' In his 'Hints on Botany Bay', Lord Gardenstone takes as his starting point the contemporary reports that some 2029 convicts had been transported prior to 18 March 1791, at a cost of £374,000 beside some unrecorded "contingencies". He was astounded by the excessively high cost of hundreds of pounds per convict, especially when there was no hint that the costs would abate; Gardenstone recommended instead the adoption of the Panopticon as devised by the great penal theorist Jeremy Bentham. To those who would argue that the colony would become quickly self-sufficient, he noted that such dreams of agriculture in Sydney were unconvincing when one realised that Governor Phillip's exploring party took five days 'to penetrate thirty miles into the desart' - evidence, by the way, that he had read Phillip's account. This is the second edition, although copies of the first edition appear to be very thin on the ground indeed (no copy of any first edition is recorded by the English Short Title Catalogue, suggesting that the "first" edition may well be a publisher's puff). Ferguson recorded copies of this second edition in the Mitchell Library and the National Library of Australia. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Andrew Kippis, D.D. F.R.S. & S.A.

Thos. Macklin, 20 October, London 1792 - Stipple engraving, 290 x 210 mm., very good.

The American Georgraphy; or, a View of the Present Situation of the United States of America: Containing Astronomical Geography, Geographical Definitions, Discovery, and General Description of America and the United States: of their Boundaries, Mountains, Lakes, Bays and Rivers; Natural History; Production, Population, Government, Agriculture, Commerce, Manufactures, and History. A Concise Account of the War, and the important Events which have succeeded.

John Stockdale, Piccadilly, London 1792 - Handsomely bound in full calf leather with gilt rule edging on the front and rear boards; gilt decorations along the spine above and below the 5 raised bands; with black leather labels: "Morse's American Geography" and "M. Freeman Shepherd." The title page is also signed in ink by M. Freeman Shepherd and another previous owner: "M. Palmer 29 June 1815." Complete with 536 pages and two splendid folding maps: One A Map of the States of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia; Comprehending the Spanish Provinces of East and West Florida" by Joseph Purcell, with the New State of Franklin." And the Second is a Map of the Northern and Middle States; comprehending the Western Territory and the British Dominions in North America from the best Authorities." Very clean and crisp, printed on heavy quality map stock. The front hinge is tender, the outside leather along the edge is creased and slightly separated; but the interior hinges at the endpapers are very good. Jedidiah Morse (August 23, 1761 – June 9, 1826) was a notable geographer whose textbooks became a staple for students in the United States. He was the father of telegraphy pioneer and painter Samuel F. B. Morse, and his textbooks earned him the sobriquet of "father of American geography." Morse strongly influenced the educational system of the United States. While teaching at a school for young women, he saw the need for a geography textbook oriented to the forming nation. The result was skimpy and derivative, Geography Made Easy (1784). He followed that with American Geography (1789), which was widely cited and copied. New editions of his school textbooks and the more weighty works often came out annually, earning him the informal title, "father of American geography." His postponed gazetteer for his work of 1784 was bested by Joseph Scott's Gazetteer of the United States in 1795. With the aid of Noah Webster and Rev. Samuel Austin, Morse published his gazetteer as Universal Geography of the United States (1797). (Wikipedia) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Adventures of Roderick Random

      B. Law et al., London 1792 - Two volumes, small octavo; engraved frontispieces; an excellent copy in contemporary half roan, flat spines lettered in gilt. A fresh and attractive copy, from the library of the Marquess Conyngham at Slane Castle, Ireland, with his bookplates and his signature at the top of each title page. This is a "new edition" of Smollett's novel, first published in 1748. Perhaps the first truly autobiographical novel in English, Smollett's picaresque narrative involved its hero in a wide variety of harrowing episodes ranging from farcical to terrifying. This was Smollett's first novel, the book which made his name, and the work which usually conveys the author's identity on the title pages of subsequent novels, written "by the author of Roderick Random." Together three journal numbers (April - June, 1792), containing the papers cited above plus four more on electrophysiology; see list below. 221 x 142 mm. (uncut). Original printed wrappers, spines a little worn, minor dust-soiling, spotting and fraying, but very good.</p><p>First Editions, Extremely Rare Journal Issues in the Original Printed Wrappers, Uncut. This 18th century Italian scientific journal is rare in any form-issues in printed wrappers are of the greatest rarity.</p><p>In March 1791 Galvani published his famous De viribus electricitatis, in which he described the production of muscle contractions in prepared frogs&#39; legs by electricity. Galvani had inadvertently discovered the central phenomenon of galvanism-the production of electric current from the contact of two different metals in a moist environment-but he interpreted his results as proving the existence of a special "animal" electricity present in muscle tissue, distinct from the frictional electricity produced by electrical apparatus such as the Leyden jar. Galvani sent an offprint of his paper to Alessandro Volta, professor of experimental physics at the University of Pavia, who had been investigating electrical phenomena since the 1760s. Volta initially dismissed Galvani&#39;s results as "unbelievable" and "miraculous," but he began replicating Galvani&#39;s experiments in late March 1792 and by April 1 "had begun the brilliantly planned and executed experiments that step by step brought him to the invention of the [electric] pile" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). Volta&#39;s first response to Galvani came on May 5, 1792, when he gave a lecture at the University of Pavia devoted to a detailed critique of Galvani&#39;s hypothesis. "The convulsive movements, according to [Volta&#39;s] belief, were due to electric currents generated by the contact of dissimilar metals affecting the preparation-in short, &#39;metallic&#39; electricity rather than &#39;animal&#39; electricity" (Fulton & Cushing, p. 245). This important discourse was published in the May 1792 issue of the Giornale fisico-medico as "Memoria prima sull&#39; elettricità animale" (no. [1] above); it was followed by his "Memoria secunda" in the June 1792 issue (no. [2] above) and several later papers on the subject. By the end of 1792, after countless experiments on animals, Volta had concluded that "all galvanic excitations arose from external electrical stimulation" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography).</p><p>Bassano Carminati, professor of medicine at the University of Pavia, had also been given a copy of Galvani&#39;s 1791 paper. On April 3, 1792 Carminati wrote a letter of acknowledgement to Galvani (no. [2] above); this letter, published in the May 1792 number of the Giornale fisico-medico, is extremely important in the history of electricity as "it first drew the attention of the learned world to Galvani&#39;s studies, and thus inaugurated the controversy with Volta which immediately followed" (Fulton & Cushing, p. 258). Galvani sent Carminati a response dated May 8 (no. [3] above) containing further observations on "animal" electricity, including experiments on an amputated human arm and leg.</p><p>Along with the papers described above, these issues of the Giornale fisico-medico contain four other papers dealing with Galvani and Volta&#39;s electrophysiology research, including Eandi&#39;s letter to Prospero Balbo describing Galvani&#39;s experiments (nos. 1-2 below); Volta&#39;s letter to Dr. Baronio (no. 3 below); and Volta&#39;s memoir on "Animal electricity and some new properties of the electric fluid" (no. 4 below). Presumably in response to demand for separate issues that he could not supply, Brugnatelli re-issued most of these papers as a book titled Memorie sull elettricità animale inserite nel Giornale fisico-medico del Sig. Brugnatelli. This edition, from reset type, and omitting Eandi&#39;s letter and Volta&#39;s final memoir, was also published in 1792; see the Norman catalogue, no. 870 (mischaracterizing the separate edition as an offprint).Fulton & Cushing, "A bibliographical study of the Galvani and the Aldini writings on animal electricity," Annals of Science 1 (1936): 239-268. </p> <p>1.         Indicazione antiquaria del Pontificio Museu Pio-Clementino in Vaticano. / Catalogue Indicatif des antiquités composant le musée Pie-Clémentin au Vatican

, 1792. 1792. Rome, Lazzarini, 1792. Small 8vo. 216pp. Hvellum, decorated paper boards. Edges stained red. Parallel text in Italian and French. Some pages a bit browned. Bottom of spine sl. dam. & with some tiny wormholes but a good copy. The Museum Pio-Clementino was founded in 1771 by Pope Clement XIV and greatly expanded by his successor Pius VI, an avid art collector. He constructed new spaces to house the expanding collection of Greek and Roman antiquities. The present work is the first edition of the first catalogue of the collections. It has been designed for portability and ease of use by visitors. This room-by-room guide leads visitors on a walking tour through the earliest curatorial museum of the Vatican complex. Written by Pasquale Massi of Cesena, identified as the custode del museo stesso, the text proves an invaluable record of the museum&#39;s initial organization, arrangement, and architecture. All the artworks in the museum are here presented, room by room. Massi also gives detailed information about about provenance and acquisition and attributions of the artworks described. This also makes it an important source to the way the art world worked in the eighteenth century. [Cicognara 3408]

Binding slightly worn and scuffed. With errors in pagination to text; two tears repaired including one to a large folding plate; repair to lower blank margin of pp. 183/184; small burnhole to pp. 559/560 just affecting several letters. A very good, crisp and clean copy overall. . First Edition. Köchel 8, p. 706. Haberkamp I, p. 352. RISM M4161 and MM4161. Both Mozart and Ziegenhagen were Masons. "In the summer of 1791, F.H. Ziegenhagen, a merchant from Hamburg who belonged to a lodge in Regensburg, commissioned this setting of his own text for solo voice and piano from Mozart. The six movements of the "little German cantata" are brief and continuous, mixing arioso and recitative, and passing through a variety of moods. The style both of this work and of K.623 shares the clarity, directness, and euphony of The Magic Flute." Zaslaw and Cowdery: The Compleat Mozart, p. 38. The present study is an early and important treatise on utopian socialism, proposing the establishment of self-sufficient agricultural/educational colonies; the fine engravings by Chodowiecki illustrate daily life in these idealized colonies and include classroom and agricultural scenes. The text of the cantata relates to the ideals proposed in Ziegenhagen&#39;s study.
