LE FÉDÉRALISTE, OU COLLECTION DE QUELQUES ÉCRITS EN FAVEUR DE LA CONSTITUTION PROPOSÉE AUX ÉTATS-UNIS DE L'AMÉRIQUE, PAR LA CONVENTION CONVOQUÉE EN 1787.

Paris: Chez Buisson, 1792. - Two volumes. [5],xxii-lii,366; [4],511pp. Half titles. Contemporary French half calf, modestly gilt, salmon-colored boards with vellum corners. A lovely, uncut copy. First French edition, variant issue, of this classic of American political theory. This is also the first edition to identify the otherwise anonymous authors, Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay. Another French edition, with a long introduction by M. Trudaine de la Sablière, the French translator, was also published by Buisson in 1792, and its omission explains the pagination in the present item. The present variant retains the original titlepage, with John Jay's name misspelled as "Gay," and uses the same sheets from the other 1792 printing. This French translation was the first to appear after the original first printing of 1788, in accord with the definite sympathies which existed between the two countries. HOWES H114, "aa." Copper engraving (Very Good, soft folds and old repaired tear in white margins, collector's stamp on the back) 36,5 x 42 cm (14.4 x 16.5 inches). - Nuremberg: 1792. A rare broadside shows the decoration with lights and Habsburg insignia on the houses at the Kornmarkt in Nuremberg for the occassion of the visit of the newly crowned Holy Roman Emperor Francis II on July 8 1792. - This very rare broadside shows decoration on three houses in Nuremberg (Nürnberg) in Germany, celebrating the visit of Francis II (Franz II., 1768 – 1835), the last Holy Roman Emperor, and his wife Maria Teresa of the Two Sicilies on July 8th, just over a month after his coronation for the Holy Roman Emperor on June 6 1792. The broadside was engraved by Friedrich Albert Annert (1759 - 1800), a cartographer and engraver from Nuremberg, and was based on a drawing by Georg Friedrich Utz (or Uz; 1742-1796). G. F. Utz was an building inspector and architect in Nuremberg and his various works, from drawing to very rare maps appear in the archives: around 1770 he made a drawing of a Carthusian Monastery in Nuremberg, in 1773 he signed as an architect on a rare separately published copper engraved map of Poland Nova mappa geographica regni Poloniæ, magni dvcatvs Litvaniæ regni et dvcatvs occidentalis Borvssiæ., and in 1787 he made a map of the Netherlands with a title General-Karte über die VII Provinzen der vereinigten Niederlande, nebst dem Generalitæts-Lande. The broadside was a part of the collection of August Riedinger, as marked with a collector's stamp on the back. August Riedinger (1845 – 1919) was a German businessman, a balloon manufacturer and a patron of the arts. We could only trace two examples of this broadside in the institutions worldwide.

[Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

The English entomologist, exhibiting all the coleopterous insects found in England; including upwards of 500 different species, the figures of which have never before been given to the public. The whole accurately drawn & painted after nature. Arranged and named according to the Linnean system by Thomas Martyn.

London 1792 - First edition, second issue. 4to, [iii], 33; [iv]p, 41, [iv]pp., 2 engraved calligraphic title-pages, 2 engraved numismatic plates, 42 hand-coloured engraved plates of beetles; ocassional spotting and dampstaining not affecting plates. Finely bound in contemporary red straight-grained morocco with intersecting rectangle and lozenge of blind ornamental rolls on covers by Samuel Welcher with his ticket, spine in four compartments, gilt lettering to second and third; spine slightly faded. The beauty of the beetle has never been so exquisitely portrayed (Wolf). Thomas Martyn (probably 1760 – 1816) was an English zoologist, conchologist and entomologist. Little is known about his life, other than that at 10 Great Marlborough Street, Westminster, he established an Academy for Drawing and Painting Natural History for young boys (ODNB). In 1784, Martyn wrote and published his major work, The Universal Conchologist. This volume depicts varying genii of beetle in bright hand-colour, with an almost microscopic fidelity. Martyn's importance as an artist and author is attested to by the prestige of his patronage - "[he] received gold medals for his work from Pope Pius VI, the Emperor Joseph II, Ferdinand IV of Naples and Charles IV of Spain" (Wolf, pg. 156), which are depicted in two sheets of engravings at the front of the volume. His work's popularity is also accounted for by the 17th century upper classes' penchant for 'cabinets of curiosities'. William Beckford, the author of the Gothic novel Vathek and a great English collector of books and objects, owned a copy to add to his "cabinet of bibliographical rarities and freaks, each one a gem" (De Ricci, pg. 85). Whilst the title-page offers the publication date as 1792, this copy is the 1793 reissue of the 1792 English-text edition, shown by the date (March 21 1793) at the bottom of dedication, which was added along with the supplementary French text (ESTC). Pressured by her unscrupulous family to marry a wealthy man she detests, the young Clarissa Harlowe is tricked into fleeing with the witty and debonair Robert Lovelace and places herself under his protection. Lovelace, however, proves himself to be an untrustworthy rake whose vague promises of marriage are accompanied by unwelcome and increasingly brutal sexual advances. And yet, Clarissa finds his charm alluring, her scrupulous sense of virtue tinged with unconfessed desire. Told through a complex series of interweaving letters, "Clarissa" is a richly ambiguous study of a fatally attracted couple and a work of astonishing power and immediacy. A huge success when it first appeared in 1747, and translated into French and German, it remains one of the greatest of all European novels. Subjects; England - Social life and customs - Fiction.

- Sehr selten. [Attributes: First Edition]

Rights of Man: being an Answer to Mr Burke's Attack on the French Revolution. Part I.

Printed for J.S. Jordan. 1792 [Part II]. Printed for H.D. Symonds. Two parts in one. iv, 78pp, bound without final ad. leaf; vii, [2], 10-91, [3]pp appendix, lacks final ad. leaf. 12mo. Cheap coarse paper; old but not intrusive waterstaining, occasional dusting. Bound in contemporary calf-backed marbled boards, vellum fore-edges; boards rubbed & neatly rebacked. Michael Foot's copy with his signature & note on front endpaper.ESTC N13084, not in BL. This issue has no price below the date on the titlepage. T5879 is the variant with the final page of text numbered 91, and the last line of the second page of the Appendix beginning: corruption and taxation. The first part was initially published by Johnson in February of 1791, but it was suppressed immediately and is of the greatest rarity. The first edition available for public sale was issued by Jordan in March, who inserted a cancelled titlepage with his own imprint. The second part was brought out in London by Jordan on February 16th 1792. Thomas Paine prepared two combined editions of the work, containing both parts, the first being a cheaply produced publication by Symonds. Because of the risk of prosecution certain passages were omitted and replaced by asterisks, the missing content being alluded to in footnotes. The other 'combined' edition was prepared during his imprisonment in France and published by Daniel Isaac Eaton in 1795. This present copy appears to have been bound together at the time, but combines Jordan and Symonds printings, both on the same paper, and both with the asterisks and footnotes.

AN ESSAY ON ARCHERY: DESCRIBING THE PRACTICE OF THAT ART IN ALL AGES AND NATIONS

Printed by J. & J. Holl (Worester), Sold by J. Robson (London), Worcester & London 1792 - First impression of the true first edition. Illustrated with five full-page woodcut illustration pages (as called for) including the black and white full-page frontispiece woodcut showing an archer drawing his bow. Also illustrated with a title-page vignette of a quiver of arrows. Eight-page preface by the author. Two-page 'to the reader' introduction. Appendix to rear. ***Very good in original half-leather and beige speckled cloth-covered boards, with speckled fore-edge and bottom edge of text-block. Original leather spine has another protective leather spine laid over by hand (a sympathetically relaid leather spine needs to be put on by a professional book-binder). The four full-page wood-cut illustrations in the text have offsetting to their facing pages. Edges of boards lightly rubbed. Frontispiece page illustration of the archer is almost detached. Spine stitching beginning to be exposed to the front gutter. Offsetting to recto of frontispiece and prelims. A few very light fox-spots to prelims and offsetting from the illustrations onto their respective neighbouring pages. Interior pages clean. Spine tight. viii prelim-pages plus two-page note to the reader to the fore and 348 pages including original errata slip tipped-in to the rear. Very light sporadic foxing to prelims and rear pages. 222mm x 144mm. ***'Being fond of the exercise of shooting the bow, it has often excited in me a desire of forming some knowledge with respect to Archery. The means of attaining information, however, were not obvious, as no comprehensive treatise on the subject has appeared during an interval of almost two centuries and an half. The Toxophilus of Ascham, published in the reign of Henry VIII cannot be esteemed a satisfactory account of this art, as it principally regards Archery in England; and as many circumstances of importance in relation to the Bow in foreign nations are omitted. In 1544, the time in which Ascham wrote, the knowledge of the Western world was but imperfect; and although some few American histories were written previous to that era, yet the jealousy of the Spanish court, studiously confined within the narrowest limits it was able, all information relating to the newly discovered continent. The manners and customs of the Eastern world were almost equally unknown, as commerce had not at that time opened a familiar intercourse with the inhabitants of this island. ***These sources of information, therefore, which afforded an ample field for the investigation of a modern writer, with respect to Archery, could not have been enjoyed in as remote a period as that in which Ascham lived.' (Quote by the author from pages 1-2 of the preface). *** Extremely scarce first impression of the true first edition, in complete condition in its original boards with a leather spine laid over, with all its pages and all illustrations present as called for. ***Of interest to collectors of rare antiquarian books on archery. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
