RESOLVE FOR DISTRICTING THE COMMONWEALTH, FOR THE PURPOSE OF CHOOSING FEDERAL REPRESENTATIVES.JUNE 30, 1792. [bound with:] RESOLVE FOR DISTRICTING THE COMMONWEALTH, FOR THE PURPOSE OF CHOOSING ELECTORS OF PRESIDENT AND VICE- PRESIDENT.JUNE 29, 1792.

[Boston. ]. 1792 - 12pp. Dbd. Early ink inscription on title-leaf. Very good. A rare pair of handbills; together, the NUC and OCLC locate only five copies of the two resolutions bound together with continuous pagination, as here. The document deals with the knotty question of creating districts for representatives. In the next few years Elbridge Gerry would give birth to the phrase, "Gerrymandering," with his odd Massachusetts districts; more recent politicians have continued this fine art. EVANS 24525, 24526.         Della ricchezza nazionale. In Napoli, per Vincenzo Flauto, a spese di Michele Stasi , 1792.

In Napoli, per Vincenzo Flauto, a spese di Michele Stasi 1792 - Cm. 18, pp. (2) 215 (1) [manca l'errata, applicata fuori quaderno, come si riscontra in altri esemplari]. Perfetta legatura ottocentesca in mezza pelle; dorso a 4 nervi con titoli in oro. Sguardie e piatti in carta marmorizzata. Rarissima edizione originale. Cfr. Iccu; Einaudi, 4270. Pressured by her unscrupulous family to marry a wealthy man she detests, the young Clarissa Harlowe is tricked into fleeing with the witty and debonair Robert Lovelace and places herself under his protection. Lovelace, however, proves himself to be an untrustworthy rake whose vague promises of marriage are accompanied by unwelcome and increasingly brutal sexual advances. And yet, Clarissa finds his charm alluring, her scrupulous sense of virtue tinged with unconfessed desire. Told through a complex series of interweaving letters, "Clarissa" is a richly ambiguous study of a fatally attracted couple and a work of astonishing power and immediacy. A huge success when it first appeared in 1747, and translated into French and German, it remains one of the greatest of all European novels. Subjects; England — Social life and customs — Fiction.         Travels through Arabia, and other Countries in the East

Edinburgh: for R. Morison and Son, G. Mudie, and T. Vernor,, 1792. Translated into English by Robert Heron. With Notes by the Translator. 2 volumes, octavo in half-sheets (206 × 125 mm). Contemporary speckled half sheep, smooth spines gilt-ruled in compartments, red morocco labels, volume numbers gilt, marbled sides. Folding map frontispiece to each volume, respectively "Chart of the Persian Gulf" and "The Red Sea, or Arabic Gulph", further folding map of Yemen, 10 copper-engraved plates of views and costumes, mostly in Egypt or Yemen. Contemporary engraved bookplate to front pastedowns; later bookseller's ticket of Galloway and Porter, Cambridge, to vol. 1. Sides and extremities rubbed, small chip to head of vol. 1 front joint, superficial partial cracking to vol. 2 front joint, tips worn, pastedowns and free endpapers marked from adhesive used in original binding, offsetting to the latter from bookplates, a few trivial marks to text, maps lightly offset, pale marginal spotting to a few plates, closed tear to vol. 1 folding map of Yemen touching the cartouche, all lettering intact, short closed tear to bottom edge of vol. 2 sig. F1, tiny hole to S2 costing half a letter. A very good copy, complete with the half-titles and the errata leaf to the rear of vol. 1. First edition in English of the two sole eyewitness accounts of the 1761-7 Danish expedition to Arabia, the first great scientific expedition to the Middle East, by its only survivor, the German-born surveyor Carsten Niebuhr (1733-1815). Complete copies with all plates, the half-titles and the errata leaf are rare. The first volume is an abridged translation of Niebuhr's Beschreibung von Arabien (1772), a description of the original expedition to Yemen. The second excerpts his Reisebeschreibung von Arabien und andern umliegenden Ländern (1774-8), and is almost entirely devoted to the peoples of Arabia and the Persian Gulf, with a brief relation of his return journey from India via Muscat and the Gulf to Bushire, and thence overland to Europe. The expedition, originally intended to "illustrate certain passages of the Old Testament … rapidly blossomed into a full-fledged scientific expedition", comprising six members (Howgego). The party left Copenhagen in early 1761, travelling via Constantinople to Alexandria and spending a year in Egypt, ascending the Nile and exploring Sinai. They then crossed from Suez to Jeddah and sailed down the Arabian coast to al-Luhayyah in Yemen, making frequent landfalls, before continuing overland to Sana'a via Mocha, with two members of the party dying en route. On returning to Mocha, the remaining four collapsed with fever and were put on a ship bound for Bombay, with only Niebuhr surviving the sea voyage. He remained in India until late 1764, when he sailed for Muscat, eventually reaching Copenhagen in November 1767, and receiving financial assistance to compile the Beschreibung, which has long been considered one of the classic accounts of the geography, people, antiquities and archaeology of the Arabian Peninsula and wider Middle East, with maps which "remained in use for over 100 years" (ibid.) The second volume is one of the most detailed English accounts of the Arabian Peninsula in the 18th century. In addition to chapters on the Hejaz, the Nejd, Yemen, and Oman, and general accounts of Arabian culture, religion, science, and natural history, there is much valuable information on today's Gulf states, including a remarkable section on the "Principality of Seer" (pp. 123-4): a "sovereignty extend[ing] along the Persian Gulph" and encompassing "Dsjulfar" (Julfar, a former name for Ra's al-Khaymah), and "Scharedsje" (Sharjah). The "Prince of Seer", whose navy is "one of the most considerable in the Persian Gulf", is evidently Shaykh Rashid bin Matar Al Qasimi (r. 1760-77), the second-recorded head of the Al Qasimi dynasty, the modern rulers of the emirates of Sharjah and Ra's al-Khaymah. The territory of the Al Qasimi tribe is clearly delineated in the map frontispiece of the first volume, which also accurately situates the "Beni Ass" — the Bani Yas, antecedents of the ruling family of Abu Dhabi — in their ancestral homeland around the Liwa oasis. There are similar sections on Kuwait (pp. 127-8) and Bahrain (pp. 152-3), making this a singularly important account of the Gulf in this still-obscure period.

Paris: Chez Buisson, 1792. - Two volumes. [5],xxii-lii,366; [4],511pp. Half titles. Contemporary French half calf, modestly gilt, salmon-colored boards with vellum corners. A lovely, uncut copy. First French edition, variant issue, of this classic of American political theory. This is also the first edition to identify the otherwise anonymous authors, Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay. Another French edition, with a long introduction by M. Trudaine de la Sablière, the French translator, was also published by Buisson in 1792, and its omission explains the pagination in the present item. The present variant retains the original titlepage, with John Jay's name misspelled as "Gay," and uses the same sheets from the other 1792 printing. This French translation was the first to appear after the original first printing of 1788, in accord with the definite sympathies which existed between the two countries. HOWES H114, "aa."

Excudebant Gul. Browne, et Joh. Warren, Londini [London] 1792 - 2 vols., 4to, pp. [iv], xlix, [i], 646; [iv], 532, 196 + engraved portrait frontispiece (bound after title-page). Contemporary straight-grained red morocco, boards bordered with a pair of double gilt rules interlocking at the centre of each edge around a gilt oval, spines divided by double raised bands between and enclosing gilt rules, second and third compartments gilt-lettered direct, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. Frontispiece spotted and with a small dampstain to upper inside corner, also offset onto dedication leaf, a few gatherings spotted, two leaves with a small piece torn from blank edge. Spines lightly sunned, a bit of rubbing around the edges, a few small scrapes to boards. Milltown Park library stamp to dedication in vol. 1 and title-page in vol. 2 and their shelfmark label to front pastedowns, along with the William O'Brien bequest label and, in vol. 1, a gift inscription to initial blank giving the book to Alfred Walmsley, from his great uncle Richard Besley, a clipped catalogue description (for the large paper version) to verso of vol. 1 flyleaf. A very nicely bound copy of the luxurious regular-paper issue of Combe's Horace. The generous margins mean that it is often mistaken for the 25-copy large-paper issue, though that is even larger. This copy is nonetheless slightly taller than usual, preserving some deckle edges and with the leaves measuring 28.5cm tall while ESTC records the small-paper issue as 27.8cm (compared to the large-paper at 35cm). The project was originally conceived by the physician Charles Combe (1743-1817) together with the classical scholar Henry Homer (1752-1791), but the latter died before it was completed and Combe saw it through alone. The result is a pleasing and well-edited edition, although the proof-reading was not the most careful and Combe was attacked in print by Homer's teacher, Samuel Parr, sparking a brief war of words.       Copper engraving (Very Good, soft folds and old repaired tear in white margins, collector's stamp on the back) 36,5 x 42 cm (14.4 x 16.5 inches). - Nuremberg: 1792. A rare broadside shows the decoration with lights and Habsburg insignia on the houses at the Kornmarkt in Nuremberg for the occassion of the visit of the newly crowned Holy Roman Emperor Francis II on July 8 1792. - This very rare broadside shows decoration on three houses in Nuremberg (Nürnberg) in Germany, celebrating the visit of Francis II (Franz II., 1768 – 1835), the last Holy Roman Emperor, and his wife Maria Teresa of the Two Sicilies on July 8th, just over a month after his coronation for the Holy Roman Emperor on June 6 1792. The broadside was engraved by Friedrich Albert Annert (1759 - 1800), a cartographer and engraver from Nuremberg, and was based on a drawing by Georg Friedrich Utz (or Uz; 1742-1796). G. F. Utz was an building inspector and architect in Nuremberg and his various works, from drawing to very rare maps appear in the archives: around 1770 he made a drawing of a Carthusian Monastery in Nuremberg, in 1773 he signed as an architect on a rare separately published copper engraved map of Poland Nova mappa geographica regni Poloniæ, magni dvcatvs Litvaniæ regni et dvcatvs occidentalis Borvssiæ., and in 1787 he made a map of the Netherlands with a title General-Karte über die VII Provinzen der vereinigten Niederlande, nebst dem Generalitæts-Lande. The broadside was a part of the collection of August Riedinger, as marked with a collector's stamp on the back. August Riedinger (1845 – 1919) was a German businessman, a balloon manufacturer and a patron of the arts. We could only trace two examples of this broadside in the institutions worldwide.         Miss Leary, Singer at Vauxhall.

London - Anonymous etching and aquatint printed in brown ink. Platemark 225 x 266 mm, sheet size 257 x 292 mm. The title is taken from an early pencil inscription in the lower margin, which adds "only two impressions taken from this plate". The other impression is not in the British Museum, though it does have a small etching published by W. Locke in 1792 showing Miss Leary again performing on a balcony at Vauxhall and holding sheet music, but with an orchestra behind her and a wreath around the compostion. Bromley, Catalogue of Engraved British Portraits lists a portrait by T. Trotter dated 1786. This is a fine impression, with just a little soiling in the large margins. Anna Maria Leary was known as "The Siren of Vauxhall" and was noted for her head-dress of three ostrich feathers. She performed at the Gardens between 1785 and 1792, though in 1787 she was said to "lack confidence". In 1792/3 she married a Mr Franklin and from then until 1807 she sang at Willis's Rooms in King Street and the Crown and Anchor Tavern in the Strand.

[Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

The English entomologist, exhibiting all the coleopterous insects found in England; including upwards of 500 different species, the figures of which have never before been given to the public. The whole accurately drawn & painted after nature. Arranged and named according to the Linnean system by Thomas Martyn.

London 1792 - First edition, second issue. 4to, [iii], 33; [iv]p, 41, [iv]pp., 2 engraved calligraphic title-pages, 2 engraved numismatic plates, 42 hand-coloured engraved plates of beetles; ocassional spotting and dampstaining not affecting plates. Finely bound in contemporary red straight-grained morocco with intersecting rectangle and lozenge of blind ornamental rolls on covers by Samuel Welcher with his ticket, spine in four compartments, gilt lettering to second and third; spine slightly faded. The beauty of the beetle has never been so exquisitely portrayed (Wolf). Thomas Martyn (probably 1760 – 1816) was an English zoologist, conchologist and entomologist. Little is known about his life, other than that at 10 Great Marlborough Street, Westminster, he established an Academy for Drawing and Painting Natural History for young boys (ODNB). In 1784, Martyn wrote and published his major work, The Universal Conchologist. This volume depicts varying genii of beetle in bright hand-colour, with an almost microscopic fidelity. Martyn's importance as an artist and author is attested to by the prestige of his patronage - "[he] received gold medals for his work from Pope Pius VI, the Emperor Joseph II, Ferdinand IV of Naples and Charles IV of Spain" (Wolf, pg. 156), which are depicted in two sheets of engravings at the front of the volume. His work's popularity is also accounted for by the 17th century upper classes' penchant for 'cabinets of curiosities'. William Beckford, the author of the Gothic novel Vathek and a great English collector of books and objects, owned a copy to add to his "cabinet of bibliographical rarities and freaks, each one a gem" (De Ricci, pg. 85). Whilst the title-page offers the publication date as 1792, this copy is the 1793 reissue of the 1792 English-text edition, shown by the date (March 21 1793) at the bottom of dedication, which was added along with the supplementary French text (ESTC).         Imitations of original drawings [.] in the collection of his Majesty, for the portraits of illustrious persons of the court of Henry VIII. With biographical tracts.

London W. Bulmer and Co. for J. Chamberlaine -1800 1792 - Folio (57 x 43.5 cm.), extra-illustrated with the eight plates by Holbein for the court of Francis II and accompanying letterpress, in total 92 stipple-engraved plates printed in colours by F. Bartolozzi [84], C. Metz [3], C. Knight [1] and 4 unsigned, after Holbein, 7 of the plates are printed on pink paper, 19 plates are laid in and on thicker paper. The plates are in various states, including four before the letter and 7 in second state including the portrait of the Lady Mary. Plates 75 & 76 (the miniatures of Henry and Charles Brandon) on one sheet. Full green morocco gilt by Rutland, boards ruled in gilt with gilt floral decoration, spine with seven raised bands, all edges gilt, some offsetting from plates, minor scattered foxing, a most handsome example. A Renaissance masterpiece with iconic portraits which bring the Tudor court alive. "This magnificent work is surely the finest early example of English colour printing" (Ray English 19). In 1792, John Chamberlaine, antiquary and keeper of the King's drawings, embarked on a project to create a work that celebrated the skill and mastery of Hans Holbein some two hundred years after his death, bringing together 84 of Holbein's magnificent portraits of influential figures in the court of Henry VIII. Chamberlaine employed some of the best engravers of the time, including Florence born Francesco Bartolozzi, engraver to King George III. Originally released in 14 parts between 1792 and 1800, the work was heralded by the Monthly Review as "One of the most magnificent books that we have ever seen". Bartolozzi's engravings take centre stage in this work, replicating the majesty, finesse and accuracy of Holbein's original portraiture. Bavarian born Holbein began his artistic career working in Basel, producing religious murals and material for printed books. In 1526 he came to England with a recommendation from Erasmus, which opened the door for Holbein into the circle of Sir Thomas Moore. From then on, Holbein's reputation flourished, gaining the patronage of Anne Boleyn and Thomas Cromwell and finally the position of painter to the King. Without doubt Holbein's work captured some of the finest portraits of the most influential movers and shakers in the land. The additional 8 plates form the work entitled: Court of Francis II. "All published of an intended continuation to Chamberlaine's Imitation. It will be noticed that all eight are without dated imprints, and it is therefore probable that no copies were issued to the public until the stock was acquired many years later by Messrs. Bohn, who added them as a supplement to copies of the earlier work." (Abbey 206). Of particular interest is the fine plate of Mary, Queen of Scots. This beautiful copy bound in exquisite green morocco by the eminent binder George Rutland, Newcastle-upon-Tyne around the 1870's. Abbey Life 205-206; Brunet III, 259-260 ('ouvrage magnifique'); Lewine pp. 243-4; Lowndes p.405; Ray England 19. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
