His engaging narrative of the expedition contains valuable ornithological information and interesting notes on the peoples he encountered, including the Khoikhoi ("Hottentots") and the Xhosas.       - Stockholm, J. C. Holmberg, 1790. 4:o. 24 s. Sammanbunden med: Kongl. nedre borgrättens protocoller, uti undersökningsmålet emellan källaremästaren P. Ul. Simon och kryddkrämaren L. M. Lavin, å ena, samt acteuren wid kongl. maj:ts spectacler Abraham De Broen, å andra sidan, ömsom klagande och swarande. Stockholm, J. C. Holmberg, 1790. 4:o. 72 s.

Four volumes, octavo, portrait frontispiece to volume one ("Omaï amené en Angletere par le Capitaine Furneaux"), wood-engraved headpieces; some early jottings on verso of frontispiece and final leaf of volume one, a handsome set in early quarter calf, spines gilt. First edition of this romantic fantasy about Omai, the Tahitian islander brought back to England by Cook. This is, with Elliott's Hildebrand Bowman, one of the two key imaginary voyages which relate specifically to Cook's voyages.Canon Baston (1741-1825) was a native of Rouen who published many works on rather arcane questions of theology, making it all the more surprising that he should be the author of this extraordinary work: an imaginary autobiography of Omai concentrating on the Tahitian's visit to Europe.Omai's visit to Europe was indeed newsworthy: despite Cook's initial objections, Omai was taken on board the Adventure, which returned to Portsmouth in July 1774. Given into the custody of Banks and Solander, Omai was fêted by the English public and widely seen as the embodiment of Rousseauist ideals of the noble savage. The public's fascination was reflected by the huge success of the long-running pantomime Omai: or a Trip Round the World, staged by Loutherbourg and Shield.Baston's long novel purports to be the autobiography of Omai translated from the Tahitian (it includes a four-page glossary of difficult Tahitian terms). Seen by Tarlton and McCormick as Omai's 'supreme literary tribute', the fantasy borrows heavily from the utopian imaginary voyage tradition by depicting Omai as the 'saviour of his people, a leader who on returning from England purges his society of all its evils while he introduces only the benefits of European civilisation' (Auckland City Art Gallery, The Two Worlds of Omai, 1977, p. 14).Unlike his compatriot Diderot, whose writings on Autorou - the Tahitian who returned with Bougainville to France - are marked by bitter regret at the European influence on the Pacific, Baston depicts an idyllic synthesis of Tahitian innate nobility being enhanced and purified by contact with Europe. Tragically, of course, it was Diderot's cynicism which provided a far more accurate appraisal of the coming destruction of Polynesian society, a fact which increases the historical fascination of Baston's portrait of bucolic harmony.

THE HERMIT: or, the unparalleled sufferings, and surprizing adventures, of Philip Quarll, and Englishman: who was discovered by Mr. Dorrington, a Bristol merchant, upon an uninhabited island, in the South-Sea; where he lived above fifty years, without any human assistance. Containing I. His Conference with those who found him out; to whom he recites the most material circumstances of his life; as, that he was born in the parish of St. Giles, educated by the charitable contribution of a lady, and put 'prentice to a locksmith. II. How he left his master, and took up with a notorious house-breaker, who was hanged; how, after his escape, he went to sea a cabin-boy, married a famous whore, listed himself a common soldier, turned a singing-master, and married three wives, for which he was tried and condemned, at the Baily. III. How he was pardoned by K. Charles II. turned merchant, and was shipwrecked on a desolate island on the coast of Mexico. With a curious frontispiece. The Fifth Edition.

272 pages. Engraved frontispiece. Contemporary full sheep, paneled spine with red title label. 12mo. Binding worn and cracked at joints; frontispiece off-set to title; date and cost of book [2d] on endpaper. A very good copy. The Hermit, or The English Hermit, as it was more correctly known, was a highly popular work of fiction throughout the 18th and early nineteenth century, rivaling the popularity of Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, with which it has much in common. While searching for food on a seemingly uninhabited island Edward Dorrington and his crew stumble upon a settlement. They soon discover that the buildings and everything in them belong to a single man who has been living on the island alone, but for the company of a succession of monkeys, for more than fifty years. Dorrington offers to rescue the man from the island, but the hermit declines, and offers the group a fine dinner while he recounts the tale of his adventure-filled life. The book was first published in 1727, but nothing is known of the author.

To which are prefixed, an introductory narrative of a voyage performed in 1786, from Bengal, in the ship Nootka; observations on the probable existence of a north west passage; and some account of the trade between the north west coast of America and China; and the latter country and Great Britain. Quarto (283 × 230 mm). Recent quarter calf, red morocco label, marbled boards, yellow edges. Frontispiece portrait, 10 maps and 17 plates (stipple and soft ground frontispiece portrait by Beechey and two other stipple portraits, one line and the remainder aquatints). 2 maps and 1 folding plate expertly backed with linen, small perforated library stamp to lower outer corner of title page, a little occasional bleed from yellow edges. A good copy, generally clean and fresh. First edition, with the extra plate of the Philippines which Streeter notes as missing in most copies. John Meares (?1756?1809) "was sent out in 1786 from Calcutta, by a group of merchants, to enter into the fur trade of the Northwest coast of America. Establishing himself at Nootka Sound?he built the first vessel to be launched in northern waters, made important discoveries, and explored the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The discoveries by Meares were part of the basis for the claim of Great Britain to Oregon? The Spanish seizure of his ships led to the convention by which the Spanish claims to any northern territory were finally disallowed. This important narrative gives a very full account of the Indian nations of Northwest America, describing their villages, languages, manners, and customs. It also contains a separate account of the voyage of the Iphegenia, commanded by Captain William Douglas?" (Hill). "According to the British Museum Catalogue, William Combe assisted Meares in the compilation of the work [and] John Walter, the printer and publisher?was the founder of The Times" (Abbey).
