Discourse on the Love of Our Country

, 1790. 1790. (AMERICAN REVOLUTION) PRICE, Richard. A Discourse on the Love of Our Country, Delivered on Nov. 4, 1789… to the Society for Commemorating the Revolution in Great Britain. With an Appendix… London: T. Cadell, 1790. Octavo, period-style full tree calf gilt, red morocco spine label, marbled endpapers; pp. 51, 34. $2250.Third edition, the scarce first expanded edition of Price's controversial work, issued only one year after the first edition, documenting progress in human rights from England's Glorious Revolution to the American and French Revolutions, sparking Burke's refutation in Reflections on the Revolution in France (1790) and Wollstonecraft's endorsement in Vindication of the Rights of Men (1790). Beautifully bound.Richard Price, a close friend of Franklin and John Adams, was ""the most influential British advocate of American independence"" (Howes P586). In November 1789, within months of the French Revolution, Price stood before a London meeting of the Society for the Commemoration of England's 1688 Glorious Revolution and, with this controversial Discourse in praise of revolution, triggered a war of words that sparked Burke's incendiary refutation of Price in Reflections on the Revolution in France (1790), and prompted a ringing endorsement from Wollstonecraft's Vindication of the Rights of Men (1790). In this Discourse Price triumphantly traces the course of human rights furthered by revolution

Journal of the Second Session of the Senate

1790. First Edition . (UNITED STATES CONGRESS). Journal of the Second Session of the Senate of the United States of America, Begun and Held at the City of New-York, January 4th, 1790; and in the Fourteenth Year of the Independence of the Said States. New York: Printed by John Fenno, 1790. Folio, contemporary full blind-tooled brown sheep, raised bands, red morocco spine label. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $8500.Scarce first edition of the official record of the Second Session of the First United States Senate, containing an early printing of WashingtonÂ’s eloquent State of the Union Message delivered in the Senate Chamber, and notices of ratification of the Bill of Rights, as well as a record of debate over HamiltonÂ’s fiscal policy, laws on Western expansion, the establishment of the judiciary, negotiation of Indian treaties, the census and the controversial location of a permanent seat of government.“The politics of the 1790s was a truly cacophonous affairÂ… Historians have labeled it ‘the Age of PassionÂ’ for good reasonÂ… It has no equal in American history” (Ellis, Founding Fathers, 16). That fierce debate is evident in this scarce first official publication of the Journal of the Second Session of the first Senate, which documents the entire Session from January 4 to August 12, 1790. Included is an important early printing of WashingtonÂ’s State of the Union Message (5-8), as well as a record of ratification of the Bill of Rights, of laws on Western expansion and the judiciary, and of proposals for a national census-which became implicitly linked with an emerging divide over slavery as a growing slave population in the South had a subtle but consequential impact on federal elections. In addition this JournalÂ’s notes on HamiltonÂ’s fiscal proposals address a conflict key to “the political life of the new republic in its earliest yearsÂ… the massive and personal political enmity, classic in the annals of American historyÂ… between Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson” (Elkins & McKitrick, 77). That conflict had linked impact on the location of the nationÂ’s capitol and policies over the assumption of federal debt-issues central to Senate actions that ultimately saw partial resolution on July 16, 1790, when this Journal states that Washington “has on this day approved of, and affixed his signature to the ‘Act for establishing the temporary and permanent seat of the government of the United States” (159). With these and other issues, such as regulation of trade and the military, this First Congress saw that “a new kind of ideological problem, hitherto not of first urgency, became insistentÂ… Beyond the words of the Constitution and the republican values represented by General Washington, what was to be its character? At the beginning of 1790, the answer still lay very much in the future” (Elkins & McKitrick, 78). One of only 700 copies printed, for in May 1789, Congress passed a resolution directing that “600 copies of the Acts of each session, [and] 700 copies of the Journals of each house,Â… [be printed and] distributed to the members and to the executive, judiciary, and heads of the departments of the United States government, as well as the executive, legislative and judicial branches of every state. This would practically exhaust the 600 and 700 copies, you will note, in official distribution, and leave none for public purchase” (Powell, Books of a New Nation, 87). With corrected pagination of the two final leaves (222-4) and errata. OCLC lists 35 copies. Evans 22982. Light scattered foxing, minor tape repair to final text leaf, minimally affecting text; slight rubbing to contemporary boards. An extremely good copy of a prominent volume in AmericaÂ’s early history.

Reflections on the Revolution in France

1790. Signed. BURKE, Edmund. Reflections on the Revolution in France, And on the Proceedings in Certain Societies in London Relative to that Event. London: J. Dodsley, 1790. Octavo, contemporary full brown calf, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, marbled endpapers. Housed in a custom chemise and clamshell box. $16,500.Rare third edition, published within weeks of the first edition, of Burke's important and controversial attack on the French Revolution, presentation/association copy, inscribed in Burke's hand ""From the author"" on the title page above the owner signature of prominent British statesman, financier and close Burke associate Stephen T. Adey, with Adey's owner signature also on the first text leaf. A handsome copy in contemporary calf.""One of the most brilliant of all polemicsÂ… It is not to be wondered at that a man who desired justice for America but rejected Jefferson's doctrines would be deeply stirred by the events of 1789. To Burke an absorption with the end and neglect of the means was the most dreadful of sins. His anger and disgust were exacerbated by the dread that the aims, principles, methods and language which he detested in France might infect the people of England. This it was which provoked the Reflections"" (PMM 239). ""The effect of the Reflections was extraordinary. It created a reaction against the revolution; it divided Englishmen into two parties and did much to ruin the whigsÂ… Abroad the Reflections created no less stir than at home, and Burke received the compliments of different foreign sovereigns"" (DNB). Burke's ""attack on the French RevolutionÂ… infuriated Paine, who was chagrined by these statements coming from his former friend, the great liberal. He rushed into print with his even more celebrated answer, The Rights of Man"" (Gimbel-Yale 58-59). Third edition, second issue: ""Published after 29 November 1790."" With ""Fourth Edition"" stated on title page; catchwords as in third edition, first issue; Todd ""g"" and ""h"": with ""187-x,"" ""210-*"" and ""212-1."" Todd 53g. ESTC T46577. Goldsmiths 14520. See Grolier 100 63. With the owner signatures of S[tephen] T[hurston] Adey on the title page and first text leaf. Burke was one of Adey's most ""influential patrons"" and the two often corresponded. As a member of Parliament and a prominent financier, Adey ""was associated for most of his life with the house of Boldero, Kendall, Adey & CompanyÂ…. [Burke] described Adey in 1780 as a Whig 'of worth and honour', with 'nothing of the banker in him'Â… their association continued to the end, Adey being present throughout Burke's last illness"" (House of Parliament). Armorial bookplate.Text generally fresh with faint occasional dampstaining, light rubbing to spine ends, dampstaining to rear board. An exceptional association copy.

      - Stockholm, J. C. Holmberg, 1790. 4:o. 24 s. Sammanbunden med: Kongl. nedre borgrättens protocoller, uti undersökningsmålet emellan källaremästaren P. Ul. Simon och kryddkrämaren L. M. Lavin, å ena, samt acteuren wid kongl. maj:ts spectacler Abraham De Broen, å andra sidan, ömsom klagande och swarande. Stockholm, J. C. Holmberg, 1790. 4:o. 72 s.

Gay, 3118.       Rouen: Chez de Boucher, 1790. Four volumes, octavo, portrait frontispiece to volume one ("Omaï amené en Angletere par le Capitaine Furneaux"), wood-engraved headpieces; some early jottings on verso of frontispiece and final leaf of volume one, a handsome set in early quarter calf, spines gilt. First edition of this romantic fantasy about Omai, the Tahitian islander brought back to England by Cook. This is, with Elliott's Hildebrand Bowman, one of the two key imaginary voyages which relate specifically to Cook's voyages.Canon Baston (1741-1825) was a native of Rouen who published many works on rather arcane questions of theology, making it all the more surprising that he should be the author of this extraordinary work: an imaginary autobiography of Omai concentrating on the Tahitian's visit to Europe.Omai's visit to Europe was indeed newsworthy: despite Cook's initial objections, Omai was taken on board the Adventure, which returned to Portsmouth in July 1774. Given into the custody of Banks and Solander, Omai was fêted by the English public and widely seen as the embodiment of Rousseauist ideals of the noble savage. The public's fascination was reflected by the huge success of the long-running pantomime Omai: or a Trip Round the World, staged by Loutherbourg and Shield.Baston's long novel purports to be the autobiography of Omai translated from the Tahitian (it includes a four-page glossary of difficult Tahitian terms). Seen by Tarlton and McCormick as Omai's 'supreme literary tribute', the fantasy borrows heavily from the utopian imaginary voyage tradition by depicting Omai as the 'saviour of his people, a leader who on returning from England purges his society of all its evils while he introduces only the benefits of European civilisation' (Auckland City Art Gallery, The Two Worlds of Omai, 1977, p. 14).Unlike his compatriot Diderot, whose writings on Autorou - the Tahitian who returned with Bougainville to France - are marked by bitter regret at the European influence on the Pacific, Baston depicts an idyllic synthesis of Tahitian innate nobility being enhanced and purified by contact with Europe. Tragically, of course, it was Diderot's cynicism which provided a far more accurate appraisal of the coming destruction of Polynesian society, a fact which increases the historical fascination of Baston's portrait of bucolic harmony.
