[SAMMELBAND OF FOUR RARE DOCUMENTS CONCERNING THE JUDGMENTS OF CAMILLE DESMOULINS]

Paris, 1790-1794. FIRST EDITION. IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. Together 4 texts in one volume, bound for Comte d'Hennezel d'Ormoy: early 20th-century half basane over marbled boards, spine gilt aux armes (see below) LEGAL JUDGMENTS OF THE FRENCH REVOLUTION. ONLY EDITIONS, ALL OF GREAT RARITY, INCLUDING THE SENTENCING OF CAMILLE DESMOULINS (1760-1794), a lawyer whose serious stammer (and violent temper) prompted him to turn away from the bar and towards politics on the eve of the French Revolution. On July 12, 1789, after Louis XVI had dismissed his popular minister of finance (Jacques Necker), and Desmoulins openly screamed his disappointment to the Parisians crownd gathered in the garden of the Palais Royal. This event made him famous in Paris as he was suddenly seen as a leader of the Revolution. Following Desmoulins, riots started throughout Paris. The mob, procuring arms by force on July 13, was partly organized as the Parisian militia, which was afterwards to be the National Guard. On July 14, the storming of the Bastille occurred. Today he is recognized as one of the first and foremost, revolutionaries who demonstrated the power of newspapers and pamphlets to sway the passions of the people. Ultimately, even a revolutionary patriot like Desmoulins was denounced as a threat to the goals of the Revolution and sent to the guillotine. During his incarceration, and after his death, many of his writings were subsequently destroyed, hence the scarcity of ephemeral pamphlets. The presence of four such tracts in one volume is rare. CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION: 1. Desmoulins, Camille. Opinion de Camille Desmoulins sur le Jugement de Louis XVI. Paris, Imprimerie nationale, (1792 or 1793). 8vo. 10 pp. - First Edition, in which Desmoulins pronounces (without any emotion) the death of Louis XVI. Martin & Walter, 10485. Bound with: 2. - Response by Hebert to an article by Desmoulins (Vieux Cordelier, 5 nivôse (i.e 25 Dec., 1793): "Ce langage m'a indigne comme tous les bons citoyens... En m'accablant d'un torrent d'injures et de calomnies, Camille et ses suppôts ont cru me reduire au silence ... Desmoulins est un lâche et vil calomniateur..." In January 1794 tensions increased between the radicals and the (more moderate) supporters of Darnton and Desmoulins, leading to their arrest (along with Hebert) in March 1794. Bound with: 3. Bound with: 4. S.l., 1790. 8vo. 1 f., 10 pp. - Complaint by Malouet against Desmoulins for "injures, calomnies & menaces" (published as n°31 (28 June 1790) of the Revolutions de France & de Brabant), and from which was demanded 20,000 livres for damages and interest payable "aux oeuvres de bienfaisance de la societe de la charite maternelle." The judgement was dated 7 July 1790. PROVENANCE: Comte Jehan d'Hennezel d'Ormoy (b. 1876) with his bookplate, engraved by Provost-Blondel (Paris, 1906), with his manuscript notes in ink on the first two blank pages -- purchased by [Jean] Vergnet-Ruiz, the great French art historian, with his bookplate and manuscript notes: "Acquis en 1943, vente a l'aimiable de la bibliotheque du Château de Bourguignon, Aisne" (i.e. the domicile of the Comte d'Hennezel d'Ormoy).

Madrid: D. Benito Cano,, 1790. [Discourse on the Physical and Moral Education of Women.] Octavo (181 × 107 mm) Contemporary streaked sheep, red morocco label, gilt foliate rolls to the spine. Bound with the half-title. A little rubbed, scorners slightly soft, label chipped with minor loss, light browning, attractive contemporary bookseller's ticket of the librería Puigrubi, Tarragona to the front pastedown, overall a very good copy indeed. First edition of this uncommon work - just 13 locations on OCLC - "the most comprehensive pedagogical treatise on women's education in eighteenth-century Spain, which pays much attention to serious intellectual training and takes for granted gender equality of reason" (Mónica Bolufer, Senior Lecturer in Early Modern History, University of Valencia, in her biographical essay on Amar y Borbón, Women Writers in History on-line project). Josefa Amar y Borbón (1749?-1833), whose father and grandfather were physicians at the royal court, received an extraordinary education for a non-aristocratic woman of her era, learning Latin, Greek, French, Italian and, unusually, English, and being encouraged in her freethinking intellectual pursuits. She married a like-minded lawyer, Joaquín Fuertes Piquer, and moved to Zaragoza, "where he served as a magistrate, [and] where she and her husband joined the reformist and Enlightened circles". She read widely; was aware of, and openly influenced by, other women writers of the period such as madame de Genlis, the marquise de Lambert, and the Italian mathematician and philosopher Maria Gaetana Agnesi; and made numerous translations "on some of the most pressing interests of her time: agronomic, pedagogical and erudite works by Griselini, Xavier Lampillas, John Locke, some of which were published and earned her considerable prestige, and others, never printed, are lost". She also published her own essays and treatises on science and medicine, literary culture, and eradication of superstition, of which the present is the most substantial. This focus on the essay is typical of Spanish letters of the period and "these writings, [were] much maligned by 19th-century Romantics who saw little of value produced during the Spanish 'enlightenment'" (Tesser, "Amar y Borbón, Josefa" in Chevalier, Encyclopaedia of the Essay) however with her complex, discursive and fully synthesised style Amar y Borbón was a major contributor to the development of the form of the modern essay. A little-known, but nonetheless important, contribution to the eighteenth-century debate on women's rights.

An excellent source work on the culture of the Ottoman Empire, one of the first publications ever to treat the subject. Part 1, pp. 240-267, discusses Turkish music (with two plates of music, also showing a tanbur). Part 2 mainly treats of libraries and book collections, while part 3 contains the first-ever catalogue of the famous Müteferrika press - a closely annotated bibliography of the books produced by the first Turkish printshop, installed under Ahmed III in 1727. "Toderini is still quoted as an authority on this press by modern bibliographers [.] Giovanni Battista Toderini (1728-99), Venetian philologist and book collector, accompanied the Garzoni embassy to Constantinople in 1781" (Blackmer). There, he spent five years "studying Ottoman civilization and collecting Turkish mathematical instruments as well as a great number of Arabic books and manuscripts. The work contains much information on Turkish letters, and includes a list of the books from the Seraglio library which he took to Venice on his return" (Atabey). - Binding slightly rubbed; interior cound and clean.

Paris: 1790. 12mo (131 X 78 mm). [1 leaf] (title), [12], 284 pp. 6-leaf calendar, text printed on blue paper. Engraved frontispiece and additional allegorical engraved title, woodcut headpiece. Blue gilt-panelled morocco, by Riviere & Son for Bumpus of Oxford St., London; matching two-part pull-off morocco case. Provenance: contemporary marginal note to the entry for Anne of Brittany (p. 100), cropped; Sir David Lionel Goldsmid-Stern-Salomons (1851-1925), armorial bookplate; Carlo de Poortere, bookplate.*** An unusual ?"almanac?" on and for women, retaining from that genre only the calendar and the conceit of a monthly structure. The main part of the text contains over 300 short biographies of historical as well as living women, mostly but not exclusively French, distinguished by their virtue, intelligence or courage, and less so by their beauty (as explained in the editor?'s preface, signed S.D.M.). Divided into 11 sections, with half-titles, for January through November, and listed in no discernible order, the ladies selected include queens and princesses, royal mistresses, authors and poets, and heroines. Ranging from Agrippina to Camargo, a recently deceased dancer from the Opéra, the list includes lower class women such as the tragic Marie Millet, a ?"French Lucretia?" who lived in the reign of Henri III, who was raped by a captain, who shared her with his troops; she killed him before being herself killed by the enraged soldiers, who in turn would die in the peasant uprising that she inspired. Writers include Louise Labé, the Comtesse de La Suze, Mme, de Genlis and Mme. de Beauharnais, whose prefatory ?"Épitre aux hommes?" concludes with a daring description of Creation in which man was the stalk, created in haste, and woman the flower, saved by God for last and to which he devoted special care. The descriptions are lively and sometimes sarcastic. For example, Marie-Theresa of Austria, wife of Louis XIV, the first entry, is praised as a woman of great virtue and an enemy of intrigue who never meddled in politics; this description is followed by a long list of her husband?'s mistresses, ?"the royal recompense for so many virtues.?" The last and most unusual part of the almanac appears under the month of December. The inspiration for its publication was an event that took place on September 7, 1789, depicted in the frontispiece: on that day a delegation of 21 women, wives and daughters of artists, brought their gold jewels and silver to the Assemblée nationale and donated them to the Patrie to be melted down and used toward the public debt, for the ?"Regeneration of the Nation.?" These ladies, listed on p. 237, were widely emulated, and this section contains not only a list of their gifts but a chart listing 45 other women who brought in their silver and jewelry during the next three weeks, up to September 28th (the date when the list was no doubt compiled). All the entries include a detailed list of their contributions, including their weights in marcs, onces, deniers and grains. A rare book, in perfect condition. OCLC lists 3 copies (BnF, Erfurt, and Wurttembergische Landesbibliothek). Grand-Carteret 960.

The History of New Holland, from its First Discovery in 1616, to the Present Time. And a discourse on banishment by the Right Honourable Lord Aukland. Illustrated with a chart of New Holland, and a plan of Botany Bay

John Stockdale, London 1790 - Quarto, paginated [lxxix] - clxxv; folding map (laid down with small tear to inner margin repaired); later black half roan, bookplate of Henry White. An essential book for First Fleet collectors. An essential First Fleet book, widely considered the best guide to the establishment of a penal colony in New South Wales: 'an extremely interesting work and an essential inclusion in all comprehensive collections''(Davidson).Stockdale initially published this book in 1787, coinciding with the departure of the First Fleet for New South Wales. It appeased significant public curiosity about conditions in the unknown land, compiling information from previously published sources including Hawkesworth's edition of the first voyage of Captain James Cook. The History of New Holland was included in the second quarto edition of The Voyage of Governor Arthur Phillip to Botany Bay, with new title page dated 1790 and an impressive hand-coloured chart of the continent. The work was published as a canny attempt to take advantage of a public eager for information on the new colonial venture and for details of Botany Bay itself, which is here described at length. Although special mention is made of the works of Dampier and Parkinson (who was held to be particularly helpful regarding conditions on the east coast of New Holland), it is Captain Cook's discoveries that comprise the main source of information, here presented in the context of actual settlement. In fact, 'the greater part of the book is devoted to Cook's discoveries'(Holmes). The Discourse on Banishment comprising pages clxx-clxxv of this edition was written by William Eden, which has led to the traditional misattribution of the whole book as his work.

Don Joseph Urrutia, Madrid 1790 - 4 hojas incluso portada, 494 páginas, 5 hojas.

Mederer (1739-1805), a native of Vienna, came from a medical family. He began his career as a military surgeon. In 1773 he was appointed professor of surgery and obstetrics at Freiburg (then part of Austria). He caused a storm by suggesting that the professions of surgeon and physician be equated. In 1795 he resumed military service, as the chief surgical officer of all Austrian armies. The student who wrote out these notes (or at any rate owned them) was one B.J. Pfankuch. The alternative title as above is in an ornate script before the main text begins, and is also the title on the spine label.

Four volumes, octavo, portrait and view combined as engraved frontispiece a little clipped ("Omaï amené en Angletere par le Capitaine Furneaux"); an excellent set in contemporary quarter calf, flat spine a little worn, banded in gilt, double labels. Omai's 'supreme literary tribute'. A fine copy of Omai's fictional autobiography. This rare romantic account of the Tahitian islander brought back to England by Cook is, with Elliott's Hildebrand Bowman, one of the two key imaginary voyages which relate specifically to Cook's voyages.Despite Cook's initial objections, Omai was taken on board Furneaux's Adventure, which returned to Portsmouth in July 1774. Given into the custody of Banks and Solander, Omai was feted and adored by the English public, his success culminating in the traditional sign of British approval, a long-running pantomime called Omai: or a Trip Round the World staged by Loutherbourg and Shield.Baston's long novel purports to be the autobiography of Omai translated from the Tahitian (it includes a four-page glossary of difficult Tahitian terms). Seen by Tarlton and McCormick as Omai's 'supreme literary tribute', the fantasy borrows heavily from the utopian imaginary voyage tradition by depicting Omai as the 'saviour of his people, a leader who on returning from England purges his society of all its evils while he introduces only the benefits of European civilization' (Auckland City Art Gallery, The Two Worlds of Omai, 1977, p. 14).With passages on Cook and a lengthy section on Christianity, Baston's work could not be further removed from the other major French contribution of his compatriot Diderot, whose writings on Aotourou, the Tahitian who returned with Bougainville to France, are marked by bitter regret at the European influence on the Pacific.
