        The Theory of Moral Sentiments

London: for A. Strahan; and T. Cadell in the Strand; and W. Creech, and J. Bell & Co. at Edinburgh,, 1790. or, An Essay Towards an Analysis of the Principles by which Men Naturally Judge Concerning the Conduct and Character, first of their Neighbours, and afterwards of themselves. To Which is Added, A Dissertation on the Origin of Languages. The Sixth Edition, with considerable additions and corrections. In two Volumes. 2 volumes, octavo (208 × 124 mm). Contemporary tan sprinkled calf, flat spines gilt ruled in compartments, red morocco labels, sprinkled edges. Extremities very lightly rubbed. Endpapers lightly browned around the edges from the leather turn ins, just affecting the first and last leaves of text, and a little spotted. Manuscript pencil note to the front free endpaper of volume one; a superb copy. Sixth and last lifetime edition, substantially revised and enlarged by the author, and a very handsomely bound set of Adam Smith's first book, the work that established his reputation as a philosopher both in London and on the Continent. "One of Adam Smith's major claims to fame, in some ways his greatest, is his development of a unified concept of an economic system with mutually interdependent parts. His development of this came well before the Wealth of Nations; it is in the Theory of Moral Sentiments of 1759 and the Lectures of 1762-3" (D. P. O'Brien, The Classical Economists, 1975, p. 29). This important edition of the Theory, which appeared a few months before Smith's death, evinces a number of broad developments in his later thought, as well as his last views on many specific points. Smith at least in part made extensive revisions so that he might bequeath a refreshment of copyright to his publisher, in which he was successful. See the editors' introduction to the Glasgow edition (Oxford, 1976), pp. 15?"20; Ross, Life, pp. 381?"5, 391?"5, and Richard Sher's account of the early editions of Adam Smith's books in Britain and Ireland in Tribe (ed.), A critical Bibliography of Adam Smith.

        Cocoa Nut Tree, c. 1790-1814

0 - This watercolor on paper is from a collection of watercolors and drawings that depicts the natural history (flora and fauna) of Guiana, dating to the early 19th century. The collection appears to pre-date the expeditions of Sir Robert Hermann Schomburgk, a German-born explorer for Great Britain who executed geographical, ethnological and botanical studies in various parts of the world in the 1830s and 40s. He traveled to South America, the West Indies, the Dominican Republic and Thailand. Fragments of a manuscript text accompanied these unsigned works of art, suggesting an English author with Guyanese subject matter. Important to note, the colonies of Berbice and the United Colony of Demerara and Essquibo were ceded to Britain in 1814, and unified as British Guiana in 1831. 10 x 8 in

A Narrative of the Mutiny on Board His Majesty's Ship Bounty; and the Subsequent Voyage of Part of the Crew, in the Ship's Boat, From Tofoa, one of the Friendly Islands, To Timor, a Dutch Settlement in the East Indies.

London: George Nicol, 1790 - Quarto (288 × 231 mm). Recent lightly sprinkled half calf, old boards, to style, red morocco label, single gilt rules enclosing the bands and to the spine and corner edges. The folding plates are somewhat creased from old misfolds, and have some minor splitting and chipping, the "Draught" with a small scraped puncture, some off-setting from the plates as usual, light browning and some marginal finger-soiling, some later red-pencilled marginal relating to the distance from Tofoa to Timor, overall a very good copy. With the folding engraved plan "A Copy of the Draught from which the Bounty's Launch was built" by Mackenzie, and 3 engraved charts by J. Walker after W. Harrison, two of them folding. First edition of Bligh's personal account of "one of the most remarkable incidents in the whole of maritime history", published two years before his full official version of the voyage and the mutiny in an effort to influence opinion in his favour, absolving him "from any blame that might be levelled against him because of the incident" (Hill). The story of Fletcher Christian's mutinous commandeering of the Bounty, and the setting adrift of Bligh and his 18 loyal crewmen on a 23-foot launch is a tale known to all, but "what is not so well known is that in the course of this hazardous journey Bligh took the opportunity to chart and name parts of the unknown north-east coast of New Holland as he passed along it - an extraordinary feat of seamanship" (Wantrup). Despite the film-fuelled condescension of posterity, it should be remembered that Bligh's skill as a navigator, perhaps second only to Cook of his time, and his courage as a seaman, ensured his continued employment by the Admiralty, led to his election to the Royal Society, and to his appointment as governor of New South Wales.       [New York]: Printed by Francis Childs and John Swaine, []. 1790 - Folio broadside. Removed from a sammelband volume, with stab holes along the left edge. Near fine. A very rare printing - only the second copy located - of the first extension of the law that regulated procedures in the United States Supreme Court and in lesser federal courts. The U.S. Constitution provided for the creation of the Supreme Court, but did not include provisions for the establishment of any other judicial system. This was addressed by the Judiciary Act of 1789, passed on Sept. 24 of that year, one of the first acts of the first Congress. On Sept. 29, 1789 the Congress passed a law making rules for judicial procedure in those courts, especially governing the issuance of "writes and processes" and the rates of fees. The present act extends the provisions of that law until the end of the next session of Congress. NAIP and Bristol locate only one copy of this act, at the South Carolina Archives. Rare.         Reflections on the Revolution in France, 1790 Irish, Bound with Two Others

Printed for Watson, Cross, Lynch, et al, Dublin, 1790, Hardcover, Book Condition: Good+, Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good-, EarlySize: 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall, I suspect this to be the first Irish or an early Dublin printing of 'Reflections', bound together with 2 others. The roman numeral date given at the front of this hard cover restoration (long ago, perhaps circa 1800) is M, DCC, XC. It numbers 356 pages, seems similar to 1790 early English versions. It is followed by re-print of ''A letter from Mr. Burke to a member of the National Assembly'' (Dublin, date in R.N. 1791, 60 pages). And ''An Appeal from the New to the Old Whigs''. (Dublin, dated in R.N. 1791, 141 pages). All 3 pamphlets were laid into marbled paper hard covers (now quite rough) trimmed in leather at spine and tips, 3/4 bound. The previous owners notes penciled in long hand on the first pastedown read as follows, ''Pamphlets Dublin Edition, Same year as English First Edition, probably earlier.'' He was, I presume, mistaken in his final assertion. A difficult book and modern slip casing to describe. The books leather spine with chipping at head and foot is labeled in red ''Pamphlets''. The leather color difference and superficial cracking at boards make me wonder if the hinges have had re-working. The small leather board tips have abrasion through their leather. In addition to great abarasion the boards have much paper scarring at edges. The text of all the pamphlets has an unusally grayish but clear and unfoxed character when compared to English work of the same vintage. The book has long been stored in a hard red silk folding sleeve which slides into its slip case. The hard red silk slip case is half bound (spine only) in ribbed red leather with gilt lettering. The leather has a number of small scars and the red silk the odd mild discoloration. I believe it may be 50 to 70 years old. Finding a history of the Irish editions of the book has been problematic, recent listings for later Irish printings have been made, but, the last record I've found for Irish-1790 is late 80s. The collation is largely, Reflections-octavo/A Letter-quarto/An Appeal-octavo. The portion of Todd's bibliography devoted to the early UK editions seems non-applicable in the main. A foto of the book and slip case will be made shortly to accompany the listing. JUST RECEIVED and added to this listing a trade paperback of Reflections, reading/study copy by Liberal Arts Press, 1955, edited by Thomas H.D. Mahoney and analysis by Piest. Nice shape, uncreased spine, unmarked. Will not reshoot with this, as extra handling of the old book would be necessary and I wish to avoid it, Book

"Letters chiefly from India; containing an account of the military transactions on the coast of Malabar, during the late war: together with a short description of the religion, manners, and customs, of the inhabitants of Hindostan."

London: J. Murray. 1790. "First edition, preceding the French edition, 8vo, pp. vii, [1], xiii, [1], 407; bound with: Murray, John. The defence of Innes Munro, Esq., captain in the late Seventy-third or Lord Macleod's regiment of Highlanders against a charge of plagiarism from the works of Dr. William Thompson; with original papers on both sides. London: J. Ridgway, 1790, pp. iv, 1-35, 47-48 (lacking pp. 36-46 and 49-54); Minnesota and Cambridge only in OCLC; two volumes bound together in early 19th century calf-backed marbled boards, red morocco label on spine; clean tear in U4 of the first work, a bit of scuffing and wear, early ownership inscription crossed out on contents leaf, but overall very good. Le Couteur's military commentary includes scathing criticism of Johnstone's conduct while under attack by the French fleet, while his sociological observations include notes on the customs of the ""Hindoos"" and the practices of the ""Gentoo"" religion (a pencilled entry at the bottom of the first page of that chapter cites 'many errors in this account'). The Murray pamphlet, defective though it is, may shed some light on this: It chronicles an interesting dispute between publisher, author, and critical audience. Innes Munro, accused of plagiarizing Thompson, attempted to lay the blame on Murray, the publisher, and on an unidentified third party who must have conveyed the manuscript to Thomson."

Poems by Charles James, Esqr. containing, among others, Vanity of Fame, Petrarch to Laura, Acontius to Cydippé, The Year 1800; or, It will be so, Suicide. Second Edition, with Additions. Vol: 1.

London. Printed for T. Cadell. J. Debrett and G. G. J. and J. date. ? 1790 - 8vo, 202 x 123 mms., pp. xiv, [15], 16 - 144, engraved title-page, original wrappers, uncut; spine slightly defective, covers a bit soiled, but a good copy, with the contemporary autograph "J. Haslewood," i. e., the bibliographer and antiquary Joseph Haslewood (1769 - 1833), whose books were sold at auction in December, 1833. Charles James (d. 1821) wrote a number of well-regarded works, though his writings were eclipsed by the more famous Romantic authors. The collected works were published in two volumes in 1789. This volume is at least curious in that it is stated to be a second edition of volume 1; however, the contents are identical to the copy of volume 2 of the second edition in the British Library. The contents of the BL copy of volume 2 are very different from those in the present volume. Is this a bibliographical anomaly that escaped the eye of the printer and was snapped up as an unconsidered trifle by Haslewood's keen eye for and attention to the mistakes possible in the printing process? He had long been concerned over the wretched condition of the Highlanders and had made as many as sixteen journeys, since 1764, into various parts of the North. He succeeded in arousing the active interest of the London Highland Society in the formation of a British Society for extending the fisheries and improving the sea ports on the coasts. Subscriptions were taken and then he set out on the above recorded tour, for which he was voted a gold medal by the Society. The two principal improvements he advocated were inland navigation, e.g. tbe Crinan Canal (since accomplished), and the establishment of free villages or fishing stations on the east coast." - Cox. Cox says of this French edition: "This work served as a good introduction of Scotland to Frenchmen, and is of importance for the story of Ossianism in France. He reproduced some of the arguments of John Smith's Gaelic Antiquities (Edinb., 1780) in reply to Johnson's attacks, whereby Frenchmen became acquainted with some of the theories of Smith an acquired some notion of the Highland bards. The Tour was first published in 1787, at the Highland Society of London

        The Death Of General Wolfe

[1790], Tessari et Cie., Paris 1790 - Medium: ORIGINAL ENGRAVINGRobert De Launay (French, 1754-1814) after Benjamin West La Mort du GÈnÈral Wolf ? QuÈbec, late 18th century engraving on laid paper 40.3 x 45.9 cmPrint beautifully framed ( (UV resistant glass) and incorporate the famous poem he is rumored to have quoted crossing the river and taking Quebec - from Grayís Elegy ."Now, gentlemen," said he, when he had finished, "I would rather be the author of that poem than take Quebec." This was the poem Wolfe was said to have rather written than take Quebec. , "The boast of heraldry, the pomp of power, And all that beauty, all that wealth e'er gave, Await alike the inevitable hour: The paths of glory lead but to the grave." , That DeLaunay was commissioned to engrave The Death of General Wolfe seems somewhat mysterious. Benjamin West (1738-1820) was an American painter who achieved his greatest success in London and became the President of the Royal Academy. His heroic painting of Wolfe's death (1771) became one of the most famous works of art of the late eighteenth century. Five years later (in 1776) the great English engraver, William Woollett (1735-1785) created his most popular engraving based upon West's painting. [Attributes: First Edition]
