(Gay, III, 658. Martin & Walter, 'Anonymes', n°14255. Monglond, I, 781. Tourneux, 25546). Quelques infirmes accrocs de papier. Tres bon exemplaire, tres frais..

These dispositions were made on March 24, 1790, by the Local Assembly, who wished to specifically base the Island?'s institutions on those of the municipalities in the metropolis: in fact, the enacted regulations follow the decrees passed by the National Assembly on these different matters. The title translates to PLAN FROM THE NORTHERN PROVINCIAL ASSEMBLY ON THE ORGANIZATION OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF THE TOWN AND SUBURBS OF CAP, SUBJECT TO DISTRICT CENSORSHIPS, TO BE HELD ACCORDING TO THE MAJORITY OF THEIR WISHES.         The life and strange surprizing adventures of Robinson Crusoe, of York, mariner

London: John Stockdale 8vo (22 cm, 8.6"). 2 vols. I: Frontis., [4], [xi]–389, [1 (blank)] pp.; 7 plts. II: Frontis., v, [1], 456, [24], pp.; 6 plts.. 1790 ILLUSTRATED late 18th-century rendition of this classic tale: The Stockdale edition of Defoe's most-read novel contains a frontispiece and engraved title-page in each volume, along with an engraved portrait of Defoe and 12 engraved illustrations done by Medland after drawings by Stothard. Chalmers's Life of Defoe appears in this edition for the first time anywhere; another interesting addition is "A List of Writings, which are considered as undoubtedly De Foe's." => A handsome edition of a great, indeed landmark English novel. Contemporary half calf over marbled paper–covered sides, bindings overall worn and rubbed with leather lost over corners and front joint of vol. I cracked though holding; now housed in a handsome clamshell case of quarter calf with marbled paper sides, spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label and gilt-stamped decorations. Front free endpapers with pencilled ownership inscription (dated 1875 in vol. I); front pastedowns with 20th-century collector's bookplate. Light to moderate foxing to pages in proximity to plates, with occasional small spots to other pages; plates spotted and browned although not beyond expectable degrees. => Worthy.

The Works of the English Poets with Prefaces, biographical and critical, by Samuel Johnson

London: J Buckland, J Rivington and sons, T Payne and Son, L Davis, S White et al, 1790 A fair set of the 2nd issue of Johnson's collected edition of english poets - published in 75 volumes with 32 (of 34) black and white plates . This edition updates the first, published 1779-81, including a further 14 poets.Classed as 'fair' because the full leather bindings vary in condition, and the 2 contents listing/index volumes - 74 and 75 are in poor and wrecked condition respectively (74 browned and largely disbound; 75 pages torn vertically - possibly for spills). All are bound in contemporary tree calf and have an armorial bookplate of Daniel Clutterbuck Esq on the front pastedown. All the bindings lack their labels and all have wear to hinges and edges - 7 out of 74 either have a board detached or an extremely weak hinge. The contents (of volumes 1-73) are generally in very good clean condition and appear little read. There is some offsetting from the plates to text in Vols I-VI (which contain lives of the poets); the portrait of Denham in Vol I has a repaired tear; and there is occasional marking or spotting. Please enquire if you would like to see more images, discuss the condition in more detail. A scarce work.

Rare original 18th century Italian manuscript on astronomy

Italy, [1790] . Contemporary marble boards. Very Good. 8vo (22.0 x 15.8 cm). Contemporary marble boards; paper loss along hinges, ends of spine and edges of boards. Collation: 364 pages of neatly hand written text on half of each page + numerous drawings in pencil and pen in clear half of page and several tables. There are occasional addition of text in the clear area of a page. This is an extensive series of lectures in astronomy with 36 lessons labeled and supplementary information on physics and astronomy at end. Date based on watermak on the leaves of laid paper. There is a pencil note on front paste down that Professor Rossi confirms that the writing is that of Oriani. The manuscript contains lecture notes by Oriani for students or colleagues. Barnaba Oriani (1752-1832) was an Italian astronomer who studied astronomy under Joseph Louis Lagrange. He was ordained a priest in 1776 and joined the staff at the Brera Observatory of the Jesuit college in Milan as an assistant astronomer. Napoleon appointed him director of this Milan Observatory in 1802. Napoleon also appointed him to participate in measuring the arc of meridian between zeniths of Rimini and Rome. Oriani was honored by being named a corresponding member of the French Academy of Science, Fellow of the Royal Society and member of the Berlin Academy. He was associated with Theatine monk Piazzzi in astronomical studies for over 37 years; used his calculations to prove that Uranus is a planet rather than a comet. He published his tables of Uranus in 1795, some of which appear to be in the present manuscript. Poggendorff provides extensive list of Oriani’s dissertation and writings in astronomy. (Poggend. II, 332f.;World Who’s Who in Sci. p. 1288; Wolf II, 273f.)

The New Game of Human Life with Rules for Playing: Being the Most Agreeable & Rational Recreation Ever Invented for Youth of Both Sexes

London: J. Wallis & E. Newberry, 1790. A moral board game intended for a young audience, in which players progress through the stages of life with spins of a tee-totum, a numbered spinning top. A warning from the publishers at the bottom of the gameboard discourages the use of dice, since they were too closely related to gambling. Instructions are printed in the center and margins of the board, and the game consists of eighty-four hand-colored engravings, each with a title, arranged in a spiralling path. According to Osborne, the game was modeled after Le Nouveau Jeu de la vie Humaine, published in Paris in 1775 by Crépy. Seven periods of life, of twelve years each, are represented in the game: Infancy to Youth, Man-hood, Prime of Life, Sedate Middle Age, Old Age, Decrepiitude, and Dotage. The game is intended to develop a child's moral character, as each square of the board along the path of life contains either a positive or negative occupation or personality trait. The publishers' instructions encourage the parents or instructors of the children playing the game to "cause them to stop at each character and request their attention to a few moral and judicious observations, explanatory of each character as they proceed and contrast the happiness of a virtuous and well spent life with the fatal consequences arising from vicious and immoral pursuits." Some spaces on the board advance the player and award points, while others subtract them: landing on the Married Man or Patient Man, the player receives two stakes, but must pay two for landing on the Romance Writer, and must return to the beginning of the game after paying four if they land on the Dramatist. The Assiduous Youth receives two stakes and proceeds directly ahead to The Patriot. The ultimate goal is to reach the "Immortal Man:" according to the Rules of the Game, "The Immortal Man, who has existed 84 years, seems worthty by his Talents & Merit to become a Model for the Close of Life, which can end only by Eternity." The engraved sheet is divided into sixteen panels and mounted on a flexible linen backing so that the game board could be folded up without damage. Apart from some contemporary score-keeping in the left margin of the game, this game is in remarkably fine condition with bright hand-coloring. In the original slipcase, which shows some light soiling and wear.

PROCLAMATION DE M. LE LIEUTENANT GENERAL AU GOUVERNEMENT, CONCERNANT LES TROUBLES ACTUELS DE LA COLONIE, EN DATE DU 12 NOVEMBRE 1790

Port-au-Prince: Mozard, Nov. 12, 1790.. 4pp. Single folded sheet. One pencil underlining, else fine. Untrimmed. A rare Haitian printing related to an early skirmish which precipitated the beginning of the Haitian Revolution. Philibert-François Rouxel de Blanchelande, French general and governor of Saint-Domingue from the end of 1790 through the revolution, led French Royalist forces against the rebel Haitians. He eventually lost Haiti to the revolutionaries, and eventually met the guillotine in Paris in 1793. Here Rouxel addresses the small revolt led by Vincent Ogé, a wealthy free Haitian who attempted to secure voting rights for free men of color in Haiti. Rouxel refused to allow Ogé's request. As a result, Ogé organized between 250 and 300 free men of color who successfully repelled several detachments of colonial militia in October 1790, before being driven into Spanish-controlled Santo Domingo in November, the month this proclamation was printed. Eventually, Ogé himself was captured, imprisoned, then executed, broken on the wheel in the public square in Cap-Français on February 6, 1791, after which he became a martyr to the cause of Haitian independence. An important piece related to early stirrings of the Haitian Revolution, which blew wide open just a few months later, in April 1791. Only one copy recorded in OCLC, at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette. All early printing from the 18th century Caribbean is rare, especially those that mention revolutionaries by name. OCLC 8225195.

        The Kite Entangled

Published by J. R. Smith, King Street, Covent Garden, London 1790 - Mezzotint. In excellent condition with the exception of some sunning where a mount was in place. Slight surface soiling in the margins. Small puncture mark in lower right corner. Image size: 20 1/4 x 15 3/4 inches. A charming image of children playing by one of the masters of English genre painting. George Morland was one of the most successful genre painters of his time, creating, during his industrious career, some of England's most cherished paintings. At an early age Morland displayed his artistic genius, he learned to paint at three and exhibited his first work at the Royal Academy at the mere age of ten. He was a prodigious painter, producing more than 4000 paintings during the entirety of his career, and sometimes painting two or three works in a day. His beautiful idealistic scenes were a favorite source of inspiration for contemporary engravers, and as many as 250 separate engravings were done of his paintings during his lifetime. His brother-in-law, William Ward, engraved a great number of his paintings reproducing in print his endearing paintings of English country life. Ward's engravings after Morland are some of the most beautiful prints of the period; they combine fine technical skill and inspired artistic imagination to create enduring images that speak of the taste and beauty of the age.       London Gazette 1790 - Three copies of The London Gazette, reporting the resolution of the first Nootka Crisis of 1789-1790, in which Spain seized British ships and sailed them south to New Spain/Mexico. These negotiations led to substantiation of British rights on Vancouver Island, and the eventual border between Oregon and California, along the 42 parallel North, and to British sovereignty (in 1846) then Canadian, in the northern part of the Columbia region (between California and Russian America/Alaska), that is now British Columbia. Number 13259 (November 23-27 1790) reports the speech two both Houses in Parliament by George III, in which he says that suitable reparations have been obtained for the ‘Act of Violence committed at Nootka’, p 709, pp. 8 (709-716), with two red revenue stamps as applied to periodicals. Small folio, London: Edward Johnston. 13251, for November 4 1790, saying that the Convention had been agreed and would be signed on November 27, p 1, London: Edward Johnston.         Congressman Alexander White, later one of the commissioners who laid out the city of Washington, D.C., writes of the illness of George Washington, the first serious illness of a U.S. President

"Autograph letter signed ""Alex White,"" one page, 7.5"" x 9.75"", New York, May 13, 1790. Unnamed recipient. White begins: ""My dear Madam, I have hitherto been blessed with a good state of health as have my Family in a greater degree than most Family, in this place. Mrs. White & Sally have both had the Influenza a disorder which few have escaped - but are recovered, and none of the rest have taken it. The President has it, or some similar disorder so as to confine him to his bed - these two days past - I shall not trouble you with news of a Political Nature only observe that our Proceedings are so dilatory that I fear spending the greatest Part of the Summer in this Place... ."" On Monday, May 10, 1790, three days before White's letter, President Washington wrote in his diary: ""A severe illness with which I was seized the 10th. of this Month and which left me in a convalescent state for several weeks after the violence of it had passed; & little inclination to do more than what duty to the public required at my hands occasioned the suspension of this Diary."" On May 12th, William Jackson, the President's personal secretary, sent a letter to Dr. John Jones, a prominent Philadelphia physician, requesting him to secretly attend the President in New York: ""The Doctor's prudence will suggest the propriety of setting out as privately as possible; perhaps it may be well to assign a personal reason for visiting New York, or going into the Country."" However, President Washington's illness was widely known as evidenced by this letter and a letter written on May 16th by Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson to his daughter, Martha Jefferson Randolph: ""On Monday last the President was taken with a peripneumony, of threatening appearance. Yesterday (which was the 5th. day) he was thought by the physicians to be dying. However about 4. oclock in the evening a copious sweat came on, his expectoration, which had been thin and ichorous, began to assume a well digested form, his articulation became distinct, and in the course of two hours it was evident he had gone thro' a favorable crisis. He continues mending to-day, and from total despair we are now in good hopes of him."" Abigail Adams, wife of the Vice President, feared the worst, writing: ""It appears to me that the union of the states and consequently the permanency of the government depend under Providence upon his life. At this early day when neither our finances are arranged nor our government sufficiently cemented to promise duration, his death would ... have... the most disastrous consequences."" Alexander White represented Virginia in the First and Second Congresses, serving from 1789-1793. On May 18, 1795, President George Washington appointed White as one of the three commissioners to lay out the Federal City (Washington, D.C.) and erect the public buildings. White served as a Federal Commissioner of the District of Columbia until the board was abolished in 1802. Dark stain in center and seal tear reinforced on verso, else fine."

Geography Made Easy: Being an Abridgement of the American Geography.

Boston: Isaiah Thomas & Ebenezer T. Andrews, 1790. - 8vo., (6 7/8 x 4 ¼ inches). Fine folding engraved "Map of the United States of America" (a bit spotted); frontispiece double-hemisphere map of the world; 6 full-page engraved maps. 19th-century half tan calf, marbled boards, the spine in six compartments with five raised bands, red morocco gilt lettering piece in one (front cover detached). Second edition, first published in 1784. This is the PREFERRED second edition of the first American school geography, and the first American book to describe the West by the "FATHER OF AMERICAN GEOGRAPHY." Complete with all maps, including the very important folding map of the United States, by Amos Doolittle, which was one of the first national maps published in the United States immediately following the Treaty of Paris. "Morse was born in Woodstock, Connecticut on August 23, 1761. He attended Yale College and on his graduation in 1783, he decided to enter the ministry. He remained in New Haven for two more years studying theology, and to support himself he wrote a school textbook on geography. It was entitled 'Geography Made Easy.' It was first published in 1784 with the subtitle 'Being a short but comprehensive system of that very useful and agreeable science.' It proved immensely popular. It was aimed at an American audience; it was decidedly patriotic both in its praise of the United States and persuasive in its argument that a distinctly American geography should be written and read. There were few competitors; it was one of the first national textbooks produced in the new Republic written by a native-born which sought to both describe and praise the new country. It was the first geography book written and printed in the United States. "The bulk of the entry on the United States is taken up with separate sections devoted to each state. Each state is given detailed description including situation and extent, boundaries, population of counties according to 1810 census, the face (physical geography) of the country, bays, lakes and rivers, soil and productions, minerals and fossils, manufactures and commerce, education, cities and towns. Some mention is also made of Indians" (Short, pp. 30-31, 33). Howes M-842.
