Translation of a Speech, spoken by the Count Clermont Tonnere, Christmas Eve last, on the Subject of admitting Non Catholics, Comedians and Jews to all the Privileges of Citizens, according to the declaration of rights.

London, England 1790 - Clermont¿Tonnerre, "Speech on Religious Minorities and Questionable Professions" (23 December 1789) On 21 December 1789, a deputy raised the question of the status of non¿Catholics under the new regime; his intervention started a long debate that quickly expanded to cover Jews, actors, and executioners, all of them excluded from various rights before 1789. Jews enjoyed certain rights within their own religious communities but were largely excluded from broader political and civil rights and in fact faced great restrictions on their choice of occupation, ability to own property, and the like. Actors and executioners both exercised professions that were considered "infamous"; actors took someone else¿s role on the stage and were reputed to be immoral in their behavior, and executioners killed people, an act considered murder under other circumstances. As a consequence, neither actors nor executioners could vote or hold local offices before 1789, and they were often shunned. This first debate shows that declaring "the rights of man" raised as many questions as it answered. Once the question of Protestants had been raised, other excluded groups soon came up, beginning with actors. Since Brunet de Latuque had proposed a law covering "non¿Catholics," it was inevitable that someone would ask if this included the Jews, who were also non¿Catholics but whom many deputies regarded as another nation altogether. Count Stanislas¿Marie¿Adélaide de Clermont¿Tonnerre (1757¿92) gave a long speech on the subject. A deputy from the nobility of Paris and generally aligned with the liberal nobles, Clermont¿Tonnerre argued for an inclusive interpretation of the declaration of rights, but he rejected any separate or different legal status for Jewish communities. In his view, citizens were citizens as individuals, not as members of different social or ethnic groups. Sirs, in the declaration that you believed you should put at the head of the French constitution you have established, consecrated, the rights of man and citizen. In the constitutional work that you have decreed relative to the organization of the municipalities, a work accepted by the King, you have fixed the conditions of eligibility that can be required of citizens. It would seem, Sirs, that there is nothing else left to do and that prejudices should be silent in the face of the language of the law; but an honorable member has explained to us that the non-Catholics of some provinces still experience harassment based on former laws, and seeing them excluded from the elections and public posts, another honorable member has protested against the effect of prejudice that persecutes some professions. This prejudice, these laws, force you to make your position clear. I have the honor to present you with the draft of a decree, and it is this draft that I defend here. I establish in it the principle that professions and religious creed can never become reasons for ineligibility. . . . The professions that the adversaries of my opinion claim to mark as infamous come down to two: the executioners and the actors who occupy our various theaters. I blush to compare the children of the arts with the instrument of the penal laws, but the objections force me to it. . . . What the law orders is inherently good; the law orders the death of a guilty person, the executioner only obeys the law. It is against all justice for the law to inflict upon him a legal punishment; it is against reason to tell him, do this and if you do it, you will be considered infamous. I pass to the discussion of actors, and I will certainly have less trouble disarming a prejudice that has been weakened for a long time by the influence of the Enlightenment, the love of the arts, and reason. I will not say to you, Sirs, all that they have been and all that they can be. Several causes have motivated the opinion that attacks them: the license of morals, and let us not forget, Sirs, that a government that never had another goal than [Attributes: Soft Cover]

A general history of the Christian church, to the fall of the Western Empire ...the second edition improved.

Second edition, following the first of 1790: Corrected and expanded version of this scholarly history by Priestley, a controversial theologian as well as a chemist who may be best remembered today for experiments with gasses that led to the discovery of oxygen. Covering the early development of Christianity, the two volumes also address some contemporaneous events in Judaism and among various heathen groups. The work was printed in Northumberland, Pennsylvania, where Priestley settled in 1782, when his liberal political opinions and defense of the French Revolution (in addition to his status as a nonconforming minister of questionable orthodoxy) obliged him to emigrate from England to the United States. Provenance: Both title-pages inscribed by N. Irwin.

Travels To Discover the Source of the Nile,

Edinburgh: by J. Ruthven for G. G. J. and J. Robinson, London,, 1790. in the years 1768, 1769, 1770, 1771, 1772, and 1773. In five volumes. 5 volumes, quarto (305 × 235 mm). Attractive recent brown half morocco, comb-marbled sides, raised bands to spine forming compartments, second and third gilt-lettered, central sun motifs to remaining compartments gilt, untrimmed. Engraved with vignette title to each volume, arms to dedication, 55 plates mostly of natural history subjects (occasional tissue guards tipped- or laid-in), 3 battle plans each with leaf of explanatory text, 4 leaves of Ethiopian dialects and 3 folding maps on large paper. Title-pages a touch soiled, sporadic light foxing the occasional minor spot as usual, variable damp-staining to vols. I and IV mainly confined to margins, occasionally affecting plates, faint tide-mark to upper outer corner of a few plates of vol. V not affecting images, vol. II signatures 4A to 4G clumsily opened not affecting text, first two folding maps (Arabian Gulf and the Tract of Solomon's Fleet) each with short closed tear along inner fold with image intact, third map (Lake Tana) sometime repaired along fold on verso. A good set. First edition, untrimmed and rare thus. James Bruce of Kinnaird (1730-1794) was only the second European to visit the isolated mountain kingdom of Abyssinia since the 1630s, and his fame on his return rivalled that of Captain Cook and Joseph Banks, recently returned from the Pacific, though back in London "his stories were regarded as being too fabulous to be true, and he found himself ridiculed by society, especially by Samuel Johnson who had translated the narrative of Jeronimo Lobo" (Howgego). A sceptical public had to wait sixteen years while William Logan and later Benjamin Latrobe edited Bruce's chaotic notes and journals. "In conformity with 18th-century conventions of travel writing, it is an 'immethodical miscellany', ranging from striking adventure stories, reported dialogues, and Shandean asides boasting of his success with African women, through a pedantic history of ancient Ethiopia (which occupies most of the first two volumes), to vivid sketches of contemporary Abyssinian life, politics, and natural history. It was immensely successful, most of the original edition being sold to retail booksellers within thirty-two hours, and was rapidly translated into French and German" (ODNB). The excellent plates, chiefly bound into the fifth volume, separately titled "Select Specimens of Natural History, collected in Travels to discover the Source of the Nile, in Egypt, Arabia, Abyssinia, and Nubia", are based on the drawings of Bruce and his companion Luigi Balugani, and superbly engraved by Heath. Bruce's "long and energetic narrative Â… remains one of the great travel accounts of the eighteenth century" (idem).

They go on to discuss their hope for peace and their dedication to remain loyal to the French nation and the King. Written at the relative beginning of the French Revolution, this document demonstrates how much power loyalty to the monarchy still held over the communities located in French colonies. Rare, with only one copy located in OCLC, in the Biblioteque National in Paris.

        Broadside. Begins: "A los venezolanos."

In this address to his fellow Venezuelans, Paéz (1790-1873), the exiled general and former president -- who would serve as president yet again in the early 1860s-- denies any part in revolutionary conspiracies against the regime of General José Gregorio Monagas (1798-1858), then ruling Venezuela. Páez probably drew upon the pen of D. Antonio José de Irisarri (1786-1868) for the composition of this publication. Handsomely printed on a single sheet, in two columns. Rare: We fail to trace this piece of exile writing via WorldCat, NUC Pre-1956, or Palau.

Untrimmed and unopened. Fine. This pamphlet repudiates the secessionist assembly at St. Marc and declares that real authority resides solely with the King in France. The authors reiterate that St. Domingue is not a sovereign state but a colony of France, and should behave accordingly. The French Revolution fueled unrest in the colony, eventually leading to the overthrow of French rule on the island. This imprint serves to illustrate the remarkable print culture of pre- Revolutionary St. Domingue, by far the richest of French sugar colonies. From imprints handled by this firm we know that there were presses at St. Marc, Port-au-Prince, and Cap Français, with probably two different printers at each of the last two. All printing from the 18th-century Caribbean is rare. Only two copies located in OCLC, at the Bibliotheque Nationale and the John Carter Brown Library.

Port-au-Prince: de l'Imprimerie de Mozard, 1790. Original paper wrappers, gathered signatures. Very clean. Untrimmed and partially unopened. Very good. A statement by Peynier, governor-general of the colony Saint Dominigue, concerning the decrees set forth by the National Assembly and their application and effect on the colony. These decrees came at a crucial time for Saint Domingue as the French Revolution gained momentum. Many of the large plantation owners hoped to bring about independence from France and to assert a more powerful role for the aristocracy of the colony. Peynier's tenure was marked by his loyalty to the state and his opposition to the Assembly with whom he fruitlessly tried to negotiate. Rare, with only two copies located in OCLC, at Columbia and The New York Public Library.

[Cap Français]: De l'Imprimerie de l'Assemblee Provinciale du Nord, Sept. 9, 1790. - 3pp. on a single folded sheet. Minor soiling to first page. Very good. Untrimmed. An intriguing and rare imprint, from the Company of Volunteers in Port-au-Prince to the Governor's General Assembly, rebuking their recent statements. The offensive letter proposed a split from the government and purported to be written by a member of the militiamen. They go on to pledge their allegiance to the General, encouraging him to continue his move against the rebellious province of St. Marc. Any early St. Domingue imprints are rare.       Port-au-Prince: chez Bourdon, Imprimeur du Roi & du conseil superieur de Saint-Domingue, 1790. Quarto, on a folded folio sheet. Minor wear and soiling. Very good. An edict issued by the Council of Saint Domingue at Port- au-Prince but lacking the ratification of the Royal governor or the National Assembly. This is another step in the movement for independence by the white planters of Saint Domingue and the efforts of France to keep control of her colony. While the French Revolution raged in Europe, the people of Saint Domingue struggled with their conflicts between the large and small planter classes and the free "men of color"
