      Port-au-Prince: de l'Imprimerie de Mozard, 1790. Folded quarto sheet. Fine condition. This attacks the opposition to the the formation of local assemblies in Saint Domingue. Croix-des-Bouquets had formed a Parish Assembly, part of the splintering of authority as the revolution gathered force. Not in the John Carter Brown Library, which has the largest collection of imprints from revolutionary Saint Domingue.

        Über die menschliche Natur aus dem Englischen nebst kritischen Versuchen zur Beurtheilung dieses Werks von Ludwig Heinrich Jakob. 3 Bde. Erster Band: Uber den mesnchlichen Verstand. Zweiter Band: Ueber die Leidenschaften. Dritter Band: Ueber die Moral.

      Halle, 1790-92. 8vo. Bound in two very nice near contemporary brown half calf bindings with elegant gilding to spines. Bindings slightly worn and with small old paper library labels to lower spines. Brownspotted (due to the paper quality). Library stamps to title-pages (not to part three). Old owner's name to front free end-papers (F. Schiødke). (8), 843, (1); (4), 314; (16), 302 pp.. Extremely rare first edition (fully complete, all three volumes) of the first translation into any language, namely the first German edition, of one of the most important books in the history of philosophy, Hume's seminal "A Treatise of Human Nature". This epochal translation, by L.H. Jakob, not only constitutes the very first translation of the work and the most important edition after the original, it also constitutes the only other edition of the work to appear in the 18th century and the edition that is responsible for the spreading of Hume's ideas beyond the boundaries of the UK. It is, for instance, in this very version that Kant (and most other continental philosophers of the time) read Hume's magnum opus. A second English edition did not appear until 1817, the first French translation did not appear until 1878, and Spanish and Italian translations only appeared in the 20th century. David Hume is one of the most influential philosophers of all time, and his groundbreaking main work "A Treatise of Human Nature" profoundly influenced both philosophical and scientific thought throughout the following centuries. "Although Hume's more conservative contemporaries denounced his writings as works of scepticism and atheism, his influence is evident in the moral philosophy and economic writings of his close friend Adam Smith. Kant reported that Hume's work woke him from his "dogmatic slumbers" and Jeremy Bentham remarked that reading Hume "caused the scales to fall" from his eyes. Charles Darwin regarded his work as a central influence on the theory of evolution. The diverse directions in which these writers took what they gleaned from reading him reflect both the richness of their sources and the wide range of his empiricism. Today, philosophers recognize Hume as a thoroughgoing exponent of philosophical naturalism, as a precursor of contemporary cognitive science, and as the inspiration for several of the most significant types of ethical theory developed in contemporary moral philosophy."Arguably, no philosopher or thinker after Hume can say not to have either directly or indirectly be influenced by him. In the 18th century, his ideas were spread beyond the UK through the translations of his works, primarily those into German, which were those that were read by philosophers on the Continent. Kant, for instance, had been aware of the thoughts of David Hume, but as his fellow continental thinkers, he had not read his main work, until it appeared in German in 1790-192. "Kant says that "it was the remembrance of David Hume which, many years ago, first interrupted my dogmatic slumber and gave my investigations in the field of speculative philosophy a completely different direction." It is natural to wonder, in particular, about the precise years to which Kant is referring and the specific events in his intellectual development he has in mind. Here, however, we now enter controversial terrain, where there are basically two competing alternatives-both of which reflect the circumstance that Kant could read Hume only in German translation." (SEP). This first German translation, the first translation into any language, and the only edition of the work to appear within the 18th century (apart from the original, of course), is of the utmost importance to the reception of Hume's main work and to the spreading of its ideas. (See PMM:194 - first edition)

        Thomas Jefferson Signed Act of Congress Authorizing Alexander Hamilton to Complete the Famous Portland Maine Lighthouse

      New York, N.Y. 1790 - Printed Document Signed as Secretary of State, An Act authorizing the Secretary of the Treasury to finish the Light-House, on Portland-Head, in the District of Maine. August 10, 1790, [New York, N.Y.: Francis Childs and John Swaine]. Signed in type by George Washington as President, Frederick Augustus Muhlenberg as Speaker of the House of Representatives, and John Adams as Vice President, and president of the Senate. 1p. 9 3/4 x 15 1/4 in. Evans #22955. Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson signs an act of the First Congress authorizing Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton to complete construction of a lighthouse in Maine's Portland Harbor. The $1,500 in funds allocated for the work, one of the earliest federal construction projects, was to be appropriated from duties paid on imports and tonnage.The "Portland Head Light" is the oldest lighthouse in Maine and the first to be constructed under the jurisdiction of the U.S. government. It has been memorialized in countless photographs and paintings, most notably a series of 1920s watercolors by Edward Hopper. It is now a museum, owned and operated by the town of Cape Elizabeth. It is considered to be the most photographed lighthouse in the United States. Excerpt". That there be appropriated and paid out of the monies arising from the duties on imports and tonnage, a sum not exceeding fifteen hundred dollars, for the purpose of finishing the light-house on Portland-head, in the District of Maine; and that the Secretary of the Treasury, under the directions of the President of the United States, be authorized to cause the said light-house to be finished and completed accordingly"Historic BackgroundOn August 7, 1789 the First Congress passed "an Act for the establishment and support of Lighthouses, Beacons, Buoys, and Public Piers." The measure made the U.S. Treasury responsible for existing lighthouses and other navigational aids, provided the states in which they were located ceded them to the federal government within one year.Construction of the Portland Head Light had begun in 1787 with a $750 appropriation from the Massachusetts legislature. (Maine would not become a separate state until 1820.) On June 10, 1790, Massachusetts agreed to cede its lighthouses to the federal government. Two weeks later, on June 24, Hamilton wrote to Benjamin Lincoln, then the collector of customs for the port of Boston, and asked him to procure "an Account of the Cost of the Light House, so far as it is built-the height to which it is carried-the height to which it is proposed to be carried, and an estimate of the expence that will attend the Completion of it." Lincoln replied on July 3 after consulting with one of the builders that the structure currently stood 58 feet high and would cost $700 to complete. On July 30, Hamilton responded that he was holding off requesting an appropriation from Congress until the state's notice of cession had been received.Passage of this act gave Hamilton the money needed. On October 4, he instructed Lincoln "that no time may be lost" The 72-foot lighthouse was completed before the end of the year. On January 10, 1791, newly-appointed keeper Joseph Greenleaf lit the 16 whale oil lamps powering the lantern for the first time.Several changes were made to the structure over the years. During the Civil War, for instance, while raids on shipping became common and ships needed to be able to spot the lighthouse as soon as possible, the tower was raised eight feet.Legislative measures signed by Jefferson as Secretary of StateFollowing a law passed on September 15, 1789, Thomas Jefferson, as Secretary of State, signed two copies of each law, order, vote, or resolution of Congress for distribution to the executive of every state. At the time this resolution was passed, there were 13 states, so it is very likely that just 26 copies were signed by Jefferson to be sent to the governors.

        Drammi scelti di Apostolo Zeno

      Venezia: presso Antonio Zatta e figli, 1790 - In-8 (6) 328. Piena pergamena. 18mo secolo

      [N.p., but probably Cap Français, 1790. Loose sheets, stitching perished. Minor soiling. Very good plus. By the beginning of 1790 the arguments of the French Revolution were raising the issue of emancipation in Saint Domingue. This rare and interesting pamphlet argues against the emancipation of slaves there. It is signed at the end: "les 4,000 J.G. du Cap, de la secte d'Emmanuel." Only four copies located in OCLC, all of them in European institutions.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

      [Cap-Francais, St. Domingue], 1790. Some expertly repaired tears, and minor soiling. Very good. Matted. A fine perspective view of Place de Montarcher, one of the major public spaces in Le Cap-Français, modern-day Cap-Haïtien, with the large Vallière & Montarcher fountain at center, surrounded by a lively street scene. Le Cap-Français was by far the richest port city in the colony, which helped transform Saint Domingue from a languid outpost into one of France's most profitable and richest colonies by the time of the French Revolution. The image is signed, "Le Cher Largues. pinxit 1790." Original views from 18th-century Haiti are extraordinarily rare in the market.

(unter Johann Georg Lederer); Brüggemann/Evers 504 (4. Aufl. v. 1802); Monschein 81 (ausführlich). - Sehr seltenes, reizend illustriertes Werk. Bibliographien genannten Exemplare (gleich welcher Auflage) weniger Tafeln. - Schönes, frisches Exemplar. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Autograph letter signed ("Casanova").

      Dresden, 7. VII. 1790. - 4to. 3 pp. To Count Antonio Collalto ("Eccellenza mio Venerat[issimo] P[adrone]". Casanova reports reports on conflicts in Europe, prompted by early revolutionary fervour, including the quelling, by the Elector of Bavaria, Frederick Augustus III, of an uprising in Dresden, and the ill-health of the Archduke Francis of Austria, and considers the threat of war from Prussia, which might be tempted to intervene in Austria's conflict with Turkey, but which he hopes will be prevented by the indolence of the court and the unwillingness of the King [Friedrich Wilhelm II], also reporting a letter from his patron Pietro Zaguri, who tells him that all Constantinople desires peace, ".Qui v'è una insorgenza di paesani, che inquieta il governo, e jeri furono mandate truppe per deprimere il loro ardire. Si spera però che la permissione generale, che il prudentissimo Seren[issi]mo elettore diede di cacciare calmerà tutto. Si dice qui che S.A.R. l'arciduca Francesco abbia sofferto uno spunto di sangue. I ministri che circondano in Slesia il re di Prussia stanno là oziosi, e nulla il Rè decide. Egli non ha voglia di far guerra, e se non ne ha voglia non la farà. Ei vuole però che la guerra sia temuta." - Casanova thanks Collalto for his letter and message from "l'egregio signor principe [Francesco] Ruspoli", asks his permission to contact the prince, and offers his services whilst he is in Naples, assuring him that he has sent by mail-coach the two little books that he had requested, possibly the Corollaire [and Seconde Corollaire] à la duplication de l'Hexaèdre donné à Dux en Bohème, both of which Casanova had published that year in Dresden.Rare. Autograph letters by Casanova, particularly of this length and interest,are rarely offered for saleat auction.This letter shows Casanova'scontinual interest in diplomacy and in his patrons and contacts among the nobilityR.       London: Sold by J. Boydell, Engraver, [c.1790?]. Hardcover. Very Good. Oblong folio (282-385mm). 24 pp., containing a description of the cartoons of Renaissance artist Raphael Urbin [I-VII] and Index. 45 full-page finely engraved plates (numbered). Each plate shows two heads taken from Raphaelís famous seven cartoons depicting two events from the Gospels and five from the Acts of the Apostles. They are reproduced from those illustrations published in 1722 by Marie Maugis, but are placed in a different order. The text of Benjamin Ralph's "Description" concentrates on composition and the expressiveness of figures and heads, and exemplifies the 18th-century concern with "sensibilite." His index is an index of emotions, ranging from "Affection; Agony," to "Wonder and astonishment; Zeal." The plates are signed as painted by Raphael and engraved by N. Pigne or other engravers: C. Dupuis, G. Duchange, D. Beauvais, N. Dupuis, S. Thomassin, L. Desplaces, N. Tardieu, B. Lepissie. Only plate 4 is signed as drawn by Dorigny. Modern marbled paper covered boards with green leather backstrip; (plate edges somewhat brittle and marginal spotting most severe to title and rear plate, otherwise fresh and bright plates and clean, dark impressions).

        A Narrative of the Mutiny on Board His Majesty's Ship Bounty;

      London: George Nicol,, 1790. and the Subsequent Voyage of Part of the Crew, in the Ship's Boat, From Tofoa, one of the Friendly Islands, to Timor, a Dutch Settlement in the East Indies. Quarto (300 × 234 mm). Contemporary half calf sometime neatly rebacked, marbled sides. Housed in a brown cloth, fleece-lined slipcase. With the folding engraved plan "A Copy of the Draught from which the Bounty's Launch was built" by Mackenzie, and 3 engraved charts by J. Walker after W. Harrison (two of them folding). Bookplate of Louis E. Goodman (1892-1961), United States federal judge. Front joint partially split but sound, scattered foxing, a few old pale splashes on leaf B2, pencilled note at foot of D4 (and a couple of other light marginal markings). A very good, tall copy. First edition of Bligh's personal account of "one of the most remarkable incidents in the whole of maritime history" (Hill), published two years before his full official version of the voyage and the mutiny in an effort to influence opinion in his favour, absolving him "from any blame that might be levelled against him because of the incident" (Hill). The story of Fletcher Christian's mutinous commandeering of the Bounty, and the setting adrift of Bligh and his 18 loyal crewmen on a 23-foot launch is a tale known to all, but "what is not so well known is that in the course of this hazardous journey Bligh took the opportunity to chart and name parts of the unknown north-east coast of New Holland as he passed along it - an extraordinary feat of seamanship" (Wantrup). Despite the film-fuelled condescension of posterity, it should be remembered that Bligh's skill as a navigator, perhaps second only to Cook in his time, and his courage as a seaman, ensured his continued employment by the Admiralty, led to his election to the Royal Society, and to his appointment as governor of New South Wales.

      [China]. Elaborately carved tortoise shell. case, c. 2.3 wide x 7.5 cm. tall, 1.3cm. thick, with hinged. top, sterling silver inner lined cover, top with red velvet. internally. Exterior including all edges are finely carved,. A RARE CHINESE MEDICAL INSTRUMENT reminscent of similar pattern and subjects found on classic Chinese cedar chests carved in Canton and South China area. The exterior is tortise shell fixed to the silver interior with two small rivets on the side with cherry-blossom like design, above which is a silver tab, used to open and lock closed the top hinged cover. The bottom is carved in the tr- aditional Buddhist swastika. The delicate & intricate carv- ving is done in the Southern style, with open gardens, trop- ical trees showing people relaxing & fanning themselves with large fans, commonly used in the hot, sultry South. The car- vings show a story of filial piety taken from a Confucian text. The top portrays two elders [father & uncle ?] seated with canes, and on the opposite side the eldest son fans his aged father who reads a book. The lower or larger portion is a domestic scene of a family in their garden with large trees and small pagodas and bridges adorning. Opposite side shows a mother holding very large folding fan and her daugh- ter embroidering a silk cloth. The upper portion show the father who also holds a round fan with his son nearby as the father faces & talks to him. Another child is also present in the garden. The opposite side shows the father & uncle in the garden. Upon opening the top, two distinct chambers are present, each holds a small English made steel knife blade [lanets] of the thinest grade sandwiched between two flat tortise covers. Stamped on one is "GRICE" the other shows the Brit-tish crown insignia with the letter "G" stamped. Each blade is riveted, the covers rotate open to reveal the blade and become a handle. They are 5.5 cm. long by 1cm. at the widest. The cover tops of both are with very small chips missing which do not detract from the over high qual- ity of the complete object. One blade may have a small chip off the tip, as this tip has two distinct sharp points, much like saw-teeth for a 'saw action' to cut the skin and vein for bleeding. The two blades are contained in the case & the cover lockes shut. The case is without flaw or defect. It has been miraculously preserved as issued. This medical instrument was used by both Chinese & Western physicans for blood cle-ansing treatment. This special elaborate Chinese carved case was part the doctor's instruments & medical kits obtained in China. For an excellent & good general backgrou- nd see H. Wallnofer: CHINESE FOLK MEDICINE, p.50 for use of Cocculus thunbergii Mu Fang Chi snailseed achieves good res- ults for cleansing of the blood. P. Huard: CHINESE MEDICINE. E. On p. 205, reference to kidney should select from the vascular system those arteries which are controlled by the lesser Yin and the great Yang and should draw blood from them. To cure suffering from hand & foot "...Yin & Yang... one must first remove blood..."p.210. See also p.130 et al. See W. Morse CHINESE MEDICINE. The very high quality of car- ving should be appreciated. This was also used as a scapel to make small incisions in the skin. The tortoise case is carved with a very fine tool, even the facial features are skillfully done, much attention to the details of leaves, designs on the bridges, grass roof even the silken garments, coifferu &c. A very similar scapel is illustrated in Benja- min Hobson's: XIYI LUELUN in Chinese or the Japanese title: SEI I RYAKU RON, Kyoto 1858, on pages 10 & 24, in volume 1.
