Keats owned a copy, and it was the source of much of his knowledge of Latin and Greek mythology; one can sometimes even see the genesis of his lines in Lempriere's humble but lively prose." [PMM]. [Mazzei, Filippo, and Jean-Antoine-Nicolas de Caritat Condorcet, marquis de]
Paris: Chez Froullé, libraire, quai des Augustins, 1788. First edition. (4), xvi, 383, (1); (4), 259, (1); (4), 292; (4), 366 pp. 4 vols. 8vo. Mazzei emigrated to America from Italy in 1773 and introduced the cultivation of grapes and olives to the United States. He became a neighbor of Jefferson in Virginia, settling near Monticello at Jefferson's request, and this association led to their long friendship and the author's acquaintance with Franklin and Adams. A staunch Republican, Mazzei took an active role in the Independence movement. In this work he outlines the history of the American colonies, the causes of the Revolution, and the economy and government of the United States. Also discussed are Indians, slavery, emigration, and the Society of the Cincinnati. The book was a contemporary success and remains an important work which Malone characterizes as "probably the most reliable of all the works of the period on the United States" (Thomas Jefferson 2:109-110). Jefferson aided Mazzei in the compilation of the work while acting as American minister in Paris. Sabin 47206; Leclerc 957; Howes M456; Monaghan 1052; Muller 1612; Fay 24; Einaudi 3807; Reese Revolutionary 87. Contemporary quarter leather, pastepaper boards, french tips, flat spines with red leather title and volume labels. Spines rubbed, some minor starting of joints to two volumes, small loss to head of vol. I, a very good contemporary set.

TENON, [Jacques René].
FIRST EDITION. G&M 1600. Tenon's major monograph on the hospitals of Paris, in which he described the appalling conditions prevailing there, resulted in rapid reforms being made. He had wanted to achieve this for forty years, and when the King commissioned him to report on the hospitals of Paris, he did so in great detail. Contemporary with Howard in England, Tenon was the most important of the early French hospital reformers, and was instrumental in founding a special hospital for children. See Garrison p. 400. MARTIN, Benjamin.
Fourth and last edition, expanded from the rare first edition of 1747 published at Reading, which was itself a greatly expanded version of his Course of Lectures in Natural and Experimental Philosophy (1743), written when he was trying to earn a living by giving lectures and demonstrations on Newtonian experimental philosophy similar to those given in London for many years by J. T. Desaguliers. Martin was one of the best known of the many popularisers of science of his day, and one of the first true retailers in the scientific instruments trade, holding an astonishingly large and varied stock. JONES, Philip.
FIRST EDITION. Philip Jones's monograph on distortions of the spine was probably the third in England, after Percivall Pott in 1779 and Timothy Sheldrake in 1783. He worked closely with the Hunters, attending William Hunter's anatomical lectures (the portrait shows him holding a copy of "Minutes of Anatomical Lectures"), and working with him on occasions. He had many patients referred to him by John Hunter, and included in the book a facsimile letter of approbation from him. Two of the specimens illustrated in the plates are from William Hunter's museum.

RUMSEY, James.
FIRST EDITION (but see below), first impression with uncorrected title, of this incunable of steam navigation. During the 1780s James Rumsey and John Fitch each invented a steam-powered boat, Rumsey's propelled by jets of water through the stern and Fitch's by paddles. Fitch obtained a privilege for the manufacture of steam vessels, but Rumsey claimed priority for his steamboat, patented in 1791. These two vessels were the first successful steamboats in America. Although neither was financially successful, Fitch went on to inaugurate the first commercial steamboat service, on the Delaware River in 1790, which was, however, rather short-lived. Rumsey and Fitch never put aside their differences, but through their bitter rivalry they helped to bring an end to the patchwork state patent system, which was replaced by the first federal patent act in 1790. The Short Treatise includes a chronology of events, an explanation of the technical operation of the vessel, and affidavits. According to the "Advertisement" on the verso of the title, Rumsey states that this paper is reprinted with corrections and additions from "a pamphlet published in Virginia", of which "a few copies were then thought sufficient". However, neither Sabin nor ESTC records that pamphlet. Norman, citing NUC, states that it was reprinted from Rumsey's A plan wherein the power of steam is fully shewn (Philadelphia, 1788), but that is not recorded by ESTC either. Rink suggests that an edition was printed at Richmond. Rink, Technical Americana, 2925. Norman Catalogue 185 (issue with corrected title). JONES, Sir William.
FIRST EDITION. "This slim paper, read to the Bengal Asiatic Society in 1786 and published in its Transactions, marks a turning-point in the history of linguistics and signalled the birth of comparative philology... "In 1786 Jones made his epoch-making discovery of the relationship between the Sanskrit, Gothic, Greek and Latin languages -- to which he later, erroneously, thought he could add Egyptian. His clear understanding of the basic principles of scientific linguistics provided the foundation on which Rask, Bopp and Grimm built the imposing structure of comparative Indo-European studies" (PMM). Jones (1746-1794)had established his reputation as an orientalist by his Grammar of the Persian language (1771). In 1783 he was knighted and appointed a judge of the high court in Calcutta, the administrative seat of the East India Company, an office he held until his death. Here he indulged in his oriental studies, founded the Asiatic Society of Bengal, of which he was president, and edited its journal. The first paper in this, the first volume of its journal, is "A dissertation on the orthography of Asiatick words in Roman letters", also by Jones, with 7 plates. Printing and the Mind of Man 235. The London reprint of this journal is common, but this original edition, printed in Calcutta, is much scarcer. Neither Jones's name nor the title of his paper are given on its first page.

Lagrange's masterpiece was an extension on Newton's work on mechanics. In it he moulded theoretical mechanics into a system from which fundamental equations describing the motions of any systems of bodies could be derived. To achieve this Lagrange combined the principle of virtual velocities with d'Alembert's principle. He thereby set down the principle of virtual velocities as applied to mechanics. In his preface, Lagrange draws attention to the absence of diagrams in the book, which he believed the lucidity of his own presentation had rendered superfluous. "With the appearance of the Mechanique Analitique in 1788, Lagrange proposed to reduce the theory of mechanics and the art o … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

William Shakespeare
London: John Bell. The collection includes all of his major dramatic works, with plates throughout. The first two volumes here are a remarkably comprehensive and broad prolegomena to his works, and offer interesting analysis of Shakespeare from an era where many of his plays were often interpreted differently, both in their production and in their critical reception. They include Mr Pope's Preface, Mr Theobald's Preface, Sir T. Hanmer's Preface, Dr Warburton's Preface, Dr Johnson's Preface, Mr Stevens's Advertisement to the Second Edition, the unattributed essay On The Origin of The English Stage, the text of the Globe's company's License for Acting, a list of the original actors, and extracts from entries of the Stationer's Company, Mr Malone's Chronology, Rowe's Life of Shakespeare, and other fascinating arcana. The subsequent eighteen volumes contain on the plays themselves, along with annotations by Samuel Johnson and George Stevens. These annotations are one of the joys of this particular work, preserving as they do the learned comments of two of 18th century England's foremost scholars in their reading of the plays. From Copac: The general title pages are dated 1788, but the plays have separate pagination and title-pages, with dates 1785, 1786, and 1788. The annotations at the ends of the plays also have separate title-pages all with the date 1787. A landmark in the cultural and critical reception of England's greatest author. The full set comprises of: Volume I: Prolegomena To The Dramatick Writings of Will. Shakespeare Volume II: Prolegomena To The Dramatick Writing …

London: G.G.J. and J. Robinson, 1788. Second Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 2 vols.: xii, 418; iv, 500, [15] p. 22 cm. 5 engraved fold-out plates, including 2 maps. 1. Full tree-calf leather. Corners lightly bumped. Vol. 2. Small dent on bottom of rear board in vol. 1 as well as a bit of soiling to lower edge of text block. Vol. 2 has large horizontal tear in p. 327, chip in third plate, and dampstains to front pastedown and inner margins of first pages. Paper bright and clean. Title continues: "Containing The present Natural and Political State of those Countries, their Productions, Arts, Manufactures, and Commerce; with Observations on the Manners, Customs, and Government of the Turks and Arabs." Volney (1757-1820) was a well-travelled, learned man. He embarked on a journey to the Near East in late 1782 and spent nearly seven months in Ottoman Egypt. Afterwards, he lived for nearly two years in Greater Syria in what is today Lebanon and Israel in order to learn Arabic. He returned to France in 1785 where he spent the following two years compiling his notes and writing these volumes. He continued to travel in later years, being expelled from the U.S.A. as a suspected spy in 1797. It seems his life was always an adventure, for he narrowly escaped the guillotine during the French Revolution. Of interest in these well-preserved volumes is the account given of the Arabic press at the convent of Marhanna (vol. 2 pp. 190-191) with a catalogue of books printed there (p. 196). On the macabre side is the extensive discussion of diseases prevalent in Egypt, including smallbox, … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

London John Stockdale, 1788. First edition, 8vo, pp.(iii)-vi, (7)-34, [6], 12, [1], [1, blank], frontispiece, 2 folding maps. A very good copy in contemporary wrappers, original paper label on spine. Bound without half-title. Early stamp with coronet of the Holstein-Holsteinborg library to title-page. The first book on British Malaya, published two years after the British flag was raised on the island of Penang. Elisha Trapaud was both a captain in the Madras Engineers and a talented amateur artist; he accompanied Francis Light on his mission to Penang in 1786, and was an eyewitness to the foundation of the British colony, producing a sketch of the event. The frontispiece of this work was engraved after Trapaud's sketch, and is of considerable historical importance as the earliest published depiction of Pengang. Emmanuel Bowen
Vienna: Gestochen von J. Stenger, 1788. One sheet (of 4), approx. 23" x 26-1/2", lightly hand-colored in outline; fine. This is the upper left part of the 4-sheet map of North America (sheet no. 21), featuring the northwestern part of North America, and includes an inset map of Baffin and Hudson Bay: "Specialkarte von der Baffin und Hudsons Bai." Includes descriptive and historical notes throughout the map. Shows boundaries, forts, roads, mines, and Indian villages and tribal territory. This is a German-language edition of the 4-sheet map of North America first brought out by Emmanuel Bowen and John Gibson in London about 1775; the engraver Franz Anton Schraembl has apparently based it on one of the states of 1777 or later. The four sheets are numbered 20-23, and this particular sheet is no. 21 showing the Mississippi Basin as far south as Natchez, the Great Lakes (except Ontario), and west to California.

I also have an incomplete copy of this title (a interleaved Volume One only) available as a separate listing on eBay. Worldcat locates only four copies of this title. Incredibly SCARCE title, again never seen at a major auction. An important item of South Carolina history! Not Ex-Lib. I've done my best to describe the book, but if you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to send me an e-mail. [Attributes: First Edition]

The first of her four published translations into English and appearing only a year after her Thoughts on the education of daughters (London, 1787) was issued, also by Joseph Johnson, Wollstonecraft completed this work apparently on her own initiative after reading the French original (also London, 1788). Critical rather than passive in execution, a translator's advertisement notes that 'In rendering this Work into English, some liberties have been taken by the Translator, which seemed necessary to Preserve the Spirit of the Original'; a contemporary review in Johnson's Analytical Review, considered … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]
