Bon exemplaire ag … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

Bates, Joshua and Mrs Katherine Lawrence
London. A Founder of Boston Public Library and his Admirer Mrs. Katherine Lawrence Joshua Bates (1788-1864) was a financier and among the first founders of the Boston Public Library giving them $50,000 to purchase worthwhile books of value and later giving them 30,000 volumes This collection contains four letters of correspondence (November 1858 to December 1859) between Joshua Bates and Mrs. [Katherine] Lawrence, the wife of Lawrence Abbott (1792-1855) U.S. Congressman and minister to Great Britain. She had had a bust made of her husband and Mr. Bates writes that he also would like a similar one. After she provided him with the bust he requested, he said he would very much like to have a picture of her husband to display in his dining room along with other great men he admired. She soon provided an engraving. Mr. Bates at 81 now discusses old age and his family. A very nice collection.

"... the first of a new kind of manual: the rendering of a body of knowledge not easily accessible in any other form into a series of alphabetical articles for the use of those who lack the time or the learning to seek out the sources. ... it [this work] has one quite imperishable claim to fame. Keats owned a copy, and it was the source of much of his knowledge of Latin and Greek mythology; one can sometimes even see the genesis of his lines in Lempriere's humble but lively prose." [PMM].

POWNALL, Thomas.
1788 - London, printed by and for John Nichols . and sold by G.G. J. and J. Robinson. 1788. First edition. 4to (19.5 x 25.5cm) xii, 197, [1]pp., with 7 engraved folding plates, negligible marginal foxing to a few leaves, flyleaf with ownership inscription “Jane Gurney junr. 1817”, armorial bookplate c.1900 of Henry Birkbeck, a very good copy in contemporary calf-backed speckle-painted boards, spine with original gilt-titled leather label, light wear to extremities. First edition of this scarce guide to the Roman antiquities of the “Provincia Romana of Gaul, now Provence, Languedoc, and Dauphine” compiled by Thomas Pownall (1722-1805) from tours made during a two year stay in France between 1785 and 1787. Known as Governor Pownall, his successful colonial career having carried him through the posts of lieutenant-govenor of New Jersey (1755), governor of Massachusetts (1757-9) and governor of South Carolina (1759-1760). Pownall’s published output ranged over on a diversity of subjects, from politics to American topography. He was a fellow both of the Royal Society and Society of Antiquaries. This little-known book contains a wealth of observations concerning Roman antiquities and architectural remains in southern France visited by the author himself. He also reports on curiosities, including ancient Egyptian objects, viewed in several cabinets of collectors in Marseilles, Lyon and elsewhere. Many of the Roman antiquities depicted across the seven folding plates seem to have been engraved after drawings made by Pownall personally (“T.P.del”). … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

VILLETTE. Charles de.
- Edimbourg et se trouve à Paris. Clousier, Pichard, Bailly, Desenne. 380

BRION DE LA TOUR, Louis
Paris: Louis Brion de la Tour, 1788. unbound. Copper plate engraving with original hand color. Image measure 15" x 21.5". This interesting circa 1788 map by Louis Brion de la Tour depicts the United States showing the earliest configuration of the new states. The map extends from L. des Bois (Lake of the Woods) east as far as Newfoundland with the Great Lakes featured in the center. The map was issued following the Treaty of Paris and is among the earliest maps of the new nation of the United States. It includes several Indian tribes west of the Mississippi and identifies early settlements, forts, and Indian villages in New England. In the western part of North Carolina appears what is perhaps the most unique feature of this map, 'Frankland'. The tentative State of Franklin (part of modern day Tennessee), was created in 1784 as an unrecognized, autonomous state up to 1788. After North Carolina ceded the western part of its land between the Allegheny Mountains and the Mississippi River to the United States Congress in April 1784, the counties of Washington, Sullivan, Spencer (modern-day Hawkins) and Greene declared independence from North Carolina to avoid Congress from selling these lands to pay some of the War debt. In 1785, a petition for the statehood for 'Frankland' was sent to Congress and the name changes to 'Franklin' to lure support from Benjamin Franklin. Even though the petition failed to pass, the state of franklin survived as an independent nation for four years. It eventually rejoined North Carolina in 1788 when it came under attack from various Indian tr … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

MERCIER, Louis Sebastien
Amsterdam, 1788. In -8°, pp. XXII, 120, 128, 148, 148. An interesting book, written by a then very popular french author: Mercier (1740-1814), the author of comedies and writings with a very republican content, was forced to emigrate from France to Switzerland, because of the subversive content of his publications. This book was published the year before the French Revolution, after which Mercier could go back to Paris. Mercier is also considered a forerunner of the science fiction, since he wrote a novel, in 1781, called "L'an 2240" in which he imagined the life in XXIV Century, ruled by a utopistic concept of coexistence.

IBERTI
