The subjects of these seventy fables were original, and they show ingenious inventiveness. He also wrote lyrics, novelle, art-criticism, and some of the best comedies of the period, most of which, unlike the fables, were derived from other writers." (Italian Fables of the Eighteenth Century Kenneth McKenzie; Volume XII, June, 1935, number 2). HBS 68164. $1, 250. Favole di Giovanni Gherardo De Rossi. RIQUETTI, Count Honoré Gabriel Mirabeau
1788. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Riqueti, Count of Mirabeau was an 18th-century French Revolution leader known for his involvement in political controversies and scandals. One of his most notable cases came following his mission to the royal court in Prussia. He published a book entitled 'The Secret History of the Court of Berlin' in which he described the Prussian royalty, including King Frederick the Great, as a weak and incompetent. The French government was appalled at the contents of Mirabeau's treatise and censored the contents before it was mass produced. Not all of the contents, however, were controversial in nature. This eight volume French set covers economic policies, descriptions of Prussian and German people, and the political situation of Germanic states such as Bavaria and Saxony. This book inspired many of the French Revolution ideas, especially those which opposed the French government. Like many controversial French Revolution-era books, this book was published in Paris with 'Londres' (or London) on the title page. [Attributes: First Edition]

Hayman. PEGGE, Samuel ROOKE
1788. [History] ~ CELEBRATING THE GLORIOUS REVOLUTION ROOKE, Hayman. PEGGE, Samuel A narrative of what passed at the revolution house, at whittington, county of derby, in the year 1688. With a perspective view, and plan of that cottage Nottingham. Printed by Samuel Tupman, [1788]. Oblong quarto.. 11pp, [1]. With an engraved view and floorplan of 'The Revolution House at Whittington near Chesterfield, Derby-shire'. Stitched within original blue paper wrappers, with later typed lettering-piece to upper wrapper. From the recently dispersed library at West Horsley Place, without any evidence of such within the volume. A little creased, some discolouration to text. A rare piece of provincially printed English antiquarianism, issued on the centenary of the meeting in 1688 of the conspirators (The Earls of Danby, Devonshire and Mr. John D'Arcy) behind the invitation to William that led to the replacement of the Stuart monarchy commonly known as the Glorious Revolution, at the Cock and Pynot alehouse in Whittington. Produced by Hayman Rooke (1723-1806), English antiquary to distribute amongst his friends 'as a small token of my regard', who also designed the plate (signed 'Basire Sc.'), it includes the 'Duke of Leeds' own Account of his meeting' transcribed and contextualised by fellow English antiquary and local vicar at Whittington, Samuel Pegge (1704-1796). Rooke, by repute, distributed copies of this pamphlet to those dignitaries who had indicated that they would attend the elaborate anniversary procession, which began with a sermon delivered by Pegge, then 84, and continued on … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Defoe, Daniel]; [Bewick, John] (illustrator); [Campe, Joachim Heinrich]
London: John Stockdale, 1788. Scarce first illustrated edition in English of "the first important Robinsonnade," the first book to adapt Robinson Crusoe into an educational text for children, and "the rarest of all the books illustrated by John Bewick" (Gottlieb, Early Children's Books and Their Illustration). First published in German in 1779 by Joachim Heinrich Campe, "the most influential of the German Enlightenment educationists," The New Robinson Crusoe was a wildly successful experiment in interactive pedagogy after the model of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The book is structured around nightly dialogues between a father and his children, who often interrupt the story to ask questions, leading to instructive digressions. Unlike many later books of this type, the flow of dialogue sounds reasonably natural: "Dear papa, is poor Robinson Crusoe lost for good? Is he dead?" "We left him last night in the most imminent danger of losing his life." The New Robinson Crusoe went through over one hundred editions in one hundred years, inspiring the 1812 novel Swiss Family Robinson (Blamires, Telling Tales). While Campe published his own English translation of The New Robinson Crusoe in 1781 in Hamburg, the book didn't find a readership in Defoe's own country until this edition, the first printed in England. The illustrator, John Bewick, was the younger brother and apprentice of Thomas Bewick, who pioneered the wood engraving technique that would dominate English popular illustration for the next century. An excellent copy of a groundbreaking adaptation which successfully transformed a … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOURDE DE VILLEHUET, Jacques, Chevalier de Sauseuil, translator
London: S. Hooper, 1788. A couple of small stains on title, some plates lightly foxed; spine and extremities a little rubbed, a very attractive copy in a good binding of the period.. Quarto, with 13 engraved plates of naval tactics; a a few early annotations; contemporary marbled calf, flat spine gilt with anchor motif repeated in compartmemts; an early naval diagram in pencil on front free endpaper. An important study of naval tactics and strategies: earliest issue of the first of several English editions, derived from the French original which had first appeared in 1765, and was significant in the development of English naval thought. It contains detailed descriptions of how to handle a fleet and of the system of numerary signals devised by Mahé de la Bourdonnais. Bourdé de Villehuet served in ships of the French East Indies company before joining the naval service. Later, in 1798, he was part of the naval force that occupied Corfu, Zante and Cephalonia. The work was endorsed by the Royal Academy of Science in Paris and deemed "well worthy of publication, both on account of the mathematical principles of manouevres which are therein explained with perspicuity and method, as well as the particular experiments and rules of practice with which it abounds; and we consider it as highly deserving the approbation of the Academy' [p. vi]. This is the first issue, identified by its dedication to Prince William Henry and a short errata; in a later issue the dedication is to the Duke of Clarence, the title Prince William Henry assumed later in 1788, and there is an additional le … [Click Below for Full Description]

ROUSSEAU, Jean-Jacques. Julie, ou la Nouvelle Héloïse... ou Lettres de Deux Amans, Habitans d'une petite Villeau pied des Alpes... Geneva, 1788. Small octavo bound in 18th century marbled calf gilt. Extremely rare and very early edition of Rousseau's epistolary novel Julie, or The New Heloise, in two volumes. Rousseau was a Genevan philosopher, writer, and composer of18th-century Romanticism of French expression. His political philosophy influenced the French Revolution as well as the overall development of modern political, sociological and educational thought. Rousseau's epistolary novel Julie, or the New Heloise was first published 1761 in Amsterdam. The novel was originally titled Letters from Two Lovers, Living in a Small Town at the Foot of the Alps.Although Rousseau wrote it as a novel, a philosophical theory about authenticity permeates through it, as he explores autonomy and authenticity as moral values. A common interpretation is that Rousseau valued the ethics of authenticity over rational moral principles, as he illustrates the principle that one should do what is imposed upon him by society only insofar as it would seem congruent with one's 'secret principles' and feelings, being constituent of one's core identity. Thus unauthentic behavior would pave the way to self-destruction. Julie was perhaps the biggest bestseller of the 18th century. [R. Darnton, 1984] Both volumes have early owner signature. Minor edgewear on spine, text very fresh with light cleaning. Handsomely bound in very good condition. Binding: Hardcover Condition: Very Good Language: French.

Mary]. NECKER, Jacques [WOLLSTONECRAFT
[Religion] ~ WOLLSTONECRAFT'S FIRST TRANSLATION [WOLLSTONECRAFT, Mary]. NECKER, Jacques Of the importance of religious opinions. Translated from the French of Mr. Necker London. Printed for J. Johnson, 1788. 8vo. [8], xx, 458pp, [2]. With preliminary note by the translator, and terminal note by the author. Contemporary polished calf, contrasting morocco lettering-piece, gilt. Rubbed and marked, chipping to head and foot of spine, cracking to joints. Some marking to bottom edge. Small marginal hole to Ee5, bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst to FEP and early ink inscription of 'Dr. White, York' to head of title. The first English edition, translated by English philosopher Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-97), of a significant justification of the centrality of religion and morality to the actions of the individual, the community and the state as a whole by Jacques Necker (1732-1804) Swiss-born French Protestant politician and finance minister to Louis XVI until the French Revolution. The first of her four published translations into English and appearing only a year after her Thoughts on the education of daughters (London, 1787) was issued, also by Joseph Johnson, Wollstonecraft completed this work apparently on her own initiative after reading the French original (also London, 1788). Critical rather than passive in execution, a translator's advertisement notes that 'In rendering this Work into English, some liberties have been taken by the Translator, which seemed necessary to Preserve the Spirit of the Original'; a contemporary review in Johnson's Analytical Review, considered to be … [Click Below for Full Description]

The South-Carolina justice of peace, : containing all the duties, powers and authorities of that office, as regulated by the laws now of force in this state, and adapted to the parish and county magistrate. : To which is added, a great variety of warrants, indictments and other precedents, interspersed under their several heads, and a summary of several of the decisions which have been had in the courts of this state. Entered in the secretary's office of the state of South-Carolina, 11th October, 1788, agreeable to the act of Assembly in that case made and provided, entitled "An act for the encouragement of arts and sciences." Ratified the 26th of March, 1784. Peter Freneau, secretary. Volume I only.
Philadelphia: : Printed by R. Aitken & Son, at Pope's Head in Market-Street., M.DCC.LXXXVIII. [1788]. FIRST EDITION. viii, 256 pp. Pages interleaved. Volume 1 only. Original leather binding with beautiful gilt title on leather label. Last few pages of text and endpaper loosening. Leather scraped, light foxing and toning. Owner name in period ink on ffep and what appears to be a different name (also in period ink) on the upper right corner of the title page (see pics). Error in paging: p. 210-216 misnumbered 110-116. While one source lists that issued as a 3-volume set, the pagination on this volume does not line up with that set ( that set lists as Vol. 1: viii, 168 p.; v. 2: [2], 169-344 p.; v. 3: [2], 345-510, [2] p.). Could have been that this one was bound as a 2-volume set instead? Evans 21472. Sabin 88013. Turnbull, I:263. While a 1799 edition is currently available on the market for over $13K, I can find no auction records for the 1788 edition, nor any record of a copy ever offered for sale at a major auction. Worldcat locates only four copies of which only one is interleaved as is this copy and that in three rather than four volumes. An interleaved copy, with two blank leaves inserted between each printed leaf; in addition, each volume has a separate printed title page designating Volume I, etc. Incredibly SCARCE title, again never seen at a major auction. An important item of South Carolina history! Not Ex-Lib. I've done my best to describe the book, but if you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to send me an e-mail.

Henry Home, Lord Kames]
ont> Printed for the A. Strahan and T. Cadell : Edinburgh, 1788 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A complete four volume set of Henry Home's influential study of human history, bound in a uniform speckled calf binding with marbled endpapers. Henry Home, or Lord Kame as he is more widely known, was a Scottish jurist and philosopher whose works served as major influence on Scottish Enlightenment thought. Home also was a central founding member of the 'Philosophical Society of Edinburgh', and was active in the Select Society, with many notable protégés included David Hume, Adam Smith, and James Boswell. Within this text Home outlines a theory of human history, divided into four stages: The first describes man as a hunter-gatherer where people avoided each other out of competition. In the second stage, man is detailed as a 'herder of domestic animals' which required forming larger societies. Home stated that no laws were needed at these stages except those given by the head of the family or society. The third stage was that of Agriculture, that required greater cooperation and new relationships to allow for trade or employment. The fourth stage denotes a move from inhabiting villages and farms to seaports and market towns, that requires many more laws. Through its presentation of the history of man as that of progress, the work was significantly influential upon the modern study of history and was incredibly popular, released in several different editions before the end of the eighteenth century. Condition: In a full speckled calf binding. Externally, smart. Very light bumping to the … [Click Below for Full Description]

A handsome set of the third edition of Home's History, first published in two folio volumes in 1774. Lord Kame Henry Home (1696-1782) was a Scottish jurist and philosopher, whose works proved a major influence on Scottish Enlightenment thought. Home outlines a theory of history in four stages, from hunting, to shepherding, to agriculture, to commerce. Foreshadowing the later Whig historians, Home presented the history of man as that of progress, with the human race maturing from barbarism to civilisation. The work proved popular, going through several editions before the end of the 18th century. ESTC T48430.

This Byzantine novel, with its origins in the 12th century, was several times translated into French. Here it is translated into English (and somewhat Bowdlerised) by a Frenchman for the benefit of his countrymen learning English. It is fairly obviously a French production: for instance, the instructions in the Errata are in French. An edition in French and with the same imprint, had appeared 5 years earlier.
