Second partie.]

A Geneve, et se trouve a Paris, chez Prualt, 1788 - Together 2 works in 3 volumes bound as one, octavo (195 x 120 mm), L'Indépendant in two parts, the second part with separate pagination and register but no divisional title, as issued. Contemporary French marbled calf, flat spine gilt in compartments with CM cipher, red morocco label, sides with gilt roll borders, marbled endpapers and edges. Skilful repair to headcaps and joints, occasional browning, L'Indépendant, pt 1, with 2 leaves (sigs. G1 and G2) bound out of order after sig. F4; very good. With the half-titles. First edition of each work. The Independent (1784) was an English-language novel in two volumes by the ill-fated Scottish poet and playwright Andrew Macdonald (1757–1790). It is here "imitated" by the French historian and translator François Soulés (1748–1809), author of the two-volume Histoire des troubles de l'Amérique anglaise (London, 1785), for the second edition of which Thomas Jefferson supplied Soulés with materials. In 1804, when he applied for Napoleon's recently established Légion d'honneur, Soulés stated that he had been resident in England for 12 years and had worked for Whitworth, the British ambassador to France. The cipher on the spine is that of Caroline Bonaparte (1782–1839), third and youngest sister of Napoleon. In 1800/02 she married Joachim Murat (1767–1815), who became King of Naples in 1808. After her husband was court-martialled and shot in 1815, she was forced to leave the country, and styled herself as the Countess of Lipona. She settled in Trieste, North Italy, and married General MacDonald (no relation of the novelist), one of Marat's ex-ministers. The first work in the volume is the two-volume epistolary novel by Isabelle de Charrière (1740–1805), known in the Netherlands as Belle van Zuylen, the admirer and supporter of Rousseau and correspondent of David-Louis Constant d'Hermenches, James Boswell, Benjamin Constant, and her German translator Ludwig Ferdinand Huber. L'Indépendant is rare, with no copy in the British Library: OCLC locates two copies, at BnF and Augsburg, to which ESTC adds Biblioteka Narodowa, Warsaw.

Custumale Roffense, From the Original Manuscript in the Archives of the Dean and Chapter of Rochester: To which are added. Memorials of that Cathedral Church; and some Account of the Remains of Churches, Chapels, Chantries, etc. Whose Instruments of Foundation, and Endowment, are for the most part contained in the Registrum Roffense; with divers curious pieces of Ecclesiastical Antiquity, Hitherto unnoticed, in the said Diocese. The whole intended as a Supplement to that Work. Illustrated with Copper Plates, from accurate Drawings; Taken principally under the Editor's Inspection.

Printed by and for John Nichols, Red Lion Passage, Fleet-Street, 1788., 1788. FIRST EDITION. Folio, pp.iv; 266. With engraved portrait frontispiece, engraved title page vignette, engraved colophon and 56 engraved plates, five of which are folding. Entire uncut/untrimmed copy with deckle edges. Bound in twentieth century half grey calf over marbled sides, spine gilt-lettered in six compartments with raised bands. Light and occasional browning within but essentially contents are fine; first and last leaves guarded when rebound. Externally near fine. John Thorpe, a Fellow of the Royal Society, had an abiding interested in the architecture of Kent, and the Registrum Roffense, a collection of the monuments of Rochester Cathedral, was published by his son John, almost a decade after his death, with assistance from John Baynard of the Navy Office. In 1788 Thorpe Jr supplemented it with the Custumale Roffense from the original manuscript, with other memorials of Rochester Cathedral. His mention, in Custumale Roffense of a Roman mosaic pavement, discovered about 1750 in Lullingstone Park by workmen digging post holes, led archaeologists in 1949 to not only locate and uncover the pavement, but also to reveal the extensive Lullingstone Roman Villa to which it belonged. He also published a scientific letter maintaining in opposition to Daines Barrington, that the cherry is indigenous to England. A particulrly difficult title to find as much book stock was destroyed by a fire at John Nichols's printing works and warehouse.

        Critik der practischen Vernunft

Riga: Johann Friedrich Hartknoch,, 1788. Octavo (200 x 120 mm). Contemporary paper boards with simulated tree-calf pattern, manuscript paper label to spine, red edges. Woodcut device to title; woodcut headpiece. Printed in Gothic type. Recent bookplate of F. Scriba to front pastedown, 2 laid-in leaves each extensively annotated in a distinct contemporary hand, one dated 1790 and with scholarly notes, the other transcribing the text of Johann Gottfried Herder's poem Die verschiedene Weise der Moral, published in Friedrich Schiller's Musen-Almanach für das Jahr 1797; 20th-century newspaper clipping on Kant also laid in. Extremities and spine lightly rubbed, pale marking to cover, contents browned as usual, contemporary pencilled annotation to p. 266. A very good copy in a pleasing contemporary binding. First edition of Kant's Critique of practical reason, the second of his critical works, in which he develops the concept of categorical imperative. This work established Kant's moral thinking as a cardinal reference in the successive development of ethics. "The influence of Kant is paramount in the critical method of modern philosophy. No other thinker has been able to hold with such firmness the balance between speculative and empirical ideas. His penetrating analysis of the elements involved in synthesis, and the subjective process by which these elements are realized in the individual consciousness, demonstrated the operation of 'pure reason'; and the simplicity and cogency of his arguments achieved immediate fame" (PMM).

Provenance: Ticket of Galloway & Porter Ltd., Cambridge to front pastedown. A fine copy of this important work. ---- Dibner 112; Horblit 61; Norman 1257; Sparrow 120; Honeyman 1880; En Francais dans le texte 179. - FIRST EDITION OF LAGRANGE'S FOUNDATION WORK ON ANALYTICAL MECHANICS. Lagrange's masterpiece was an extension on Newton's work on mechanics. In it he moulded theoretical mechanics into a system from which fundamental equations describing the motions of any systems of bodies could be derived. To achieve this Lagrange combined the principle of virtual velocities with d'Alembert's principle. He thereby set down the principle of virtual velocities as applied to mechanics. In his preface, Lagrange draws attention to the absence of diagrams in the book, which he believed the lucidity of his own presentation had rendered superfluous. "With the appearance of the Mechanique Analitique in 1788, Lagrange proposed to reduce the theory of mechanics and the art of solving problems in that field to general formulas, the mere development of which would yield all the equations necessary for the solution of every problem. [it] united and presented from a single point of view the various principles of mechanics, demonstrated their connection and mutual dependence, and made it possible to judge their validity and scope" (DSB).         The Works of John Fothergill, M D Member of the Royal College of Physicians, and Felllow of the Royal Society of London ; Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh ; And Corresponding Member of the Royal Medical Society of Paris, and of the American Philosophical Society of Philadelphia. With Some Account of his Life.

Dilly, Charles 1788 - 657 pages (complete). A most venerable copy. Fothergill was one of the most progressive men of his generation. He advanced the treatment of Scarlet Fever, diphtheria. He identified arteriosclerosis as a condition. He encouraged inoculation against small pox. Fothergill as reckoned coffee better than tea (which was a luxury drink at the time). Further to this his botanical research and paintings were much regarded and sought after (Catherine II of Russia bought his botanical paintings after his death in 1780). He was active in prison reform and worked with Benjamin Franklin (as a Quaker) to try to avoid war between Britain and the American Colonies. This is a collection of medical and scientific papers in particular. It is much worn. Fully leather bound. Large and heavy. The boards are worn all about. They are scuffed and marked. They are, however, sound and sturdy. The spine is also worn about the seams and body. Five ridges. The aspect is benign and assured. Within, there is a presentation inscription: "Presentation by M Woolrich to R Chorley 1801." There is also a signature by Rebecca Chorley. The front inside cover has an ex-libris plate for Elizabeth Waterhouse (possibly the same who is renowned for her craft ware based on botanical design). Frontisplate etched portrait of Fothergill. The contents, especially given the age and evident usage of the book, are most agreeable and placid. The early and later pages have age related foxing and tanning but are clear and contented. Two hand coloured plates (one of the Coffea Arabica plant). Handmade paper, handpressed printing. Printer markings at the foot of the pages. Some of the text is in Latin. Majority of the text is in English. The pages are tight, clear, firm, comfortable and healthy to the touch and sight. The pages are clear, calm, confident, clubbable. A thoroughly pleasing book especially with the illustrations being sharply detailed and clear. Perfect for display, perusal and ownership. fk [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        An address to the public,

8vo., 45 (1)pp., well bound fairly recently in marbled boards, spine lettered on a paper label. A very good copy. The Introduction (pp. iii-vi) is signed by Alex. Murray, Rev. Robert Green and James Wood who were presumably the trustees. They give a brief history of the Association which had been launched at a meeting of "a respectable number of schoolmasters in Newcastle, assembled July 15th, 1774, to consider the practicableness of providing for their indigent brethren". The Duke of Northumberland accepted the honorary office of President thereby taking "the association under his protection". The Rules of the Association, which here comprise pp.31-45, are largely typical of any Friendly Society of this period. It is worth noting, however, that the geographical limitations for membership comprised the towns of Newcastle Upon Tyne and Berwick upon Tweed and the counties of Northumberland, Cumberland, Westmoreland, and Durham.

4to., with a woodcut impression of the arms of the French East India Company on title-page, 103 (1) 24pp., with a large folding table, well bound fairly recently in marbled boards with morocco spine label lettered in gilt, uncut. A fine, large, copy. A substantial paper relating to the termination of the old Compagnie des Indes and the creation of the new one. The author pleads the case for the continuation of the old company: "La Compagnie existe & son existence est la propri?t? de plusieurs milliers d'hommes. Cette propri?t? est attaqu?e, & nous sommes appel?s ? son secours". (p.4). The life of the Compagne fran?aise des Indes orientales was a short one after Lord Clive's largely successful anti-French campaigns in India. Louis XVI decided to nationalise the Company's assets and, between 1769 and about 1790 most of these assets were taken over by the French government at often a derisory low value. The Company was finally wound up in 1795.

With woodcut printer's device on title page, and woodcut headpieces. In contemporary hard paper. (10), (1)-272 p., and 1 folding, engraved, hand-coloured map of North-America and Newfoundland (by Joseph Marianus after the 1783 Faden map). The first German history of the American Revolutionary War. Sprengel (1746-1803) was a German polymath and geographer very interested in the history of the British colonies in North America and the War of Independence. His writings concentrated on the colonies, and the revolutionary events. Sprengel's books satisfied the increasing need of information about United States and the new nation in Germany, especially after the return of the Hessian veterans, who fought in the Revolutionary War.         Two original watercolour set designs for Paisiello's opera L'Amor Contrastato (La Molinara) by Domenico Fabbroni. (fl. late 18th-early 19th century)

1788. Very attractive and well-executed designs, most likely for an early production of the opera. L'Amor Contrastato, an opera in 3 acts to a libretto by Giuseppe Palomba, was first performed in Naples at the Teatro dei Fiorentini in the Autumn of 1788. It was one of Paisiello's most successful operas, so much so that it was revived for Carnival the following year at the Teatro S. Moisè in Venice, and thereafter at most of Europe's leading opera houses. Robinson: Giovanni Paisiello A Thematic Catalogue of his Works, p. 439. Fabbroni was a recognized set designer of the period.. 333 x 444 mm. and 336 x 444 mm., one signed by the artist at the lower right below the image. On laid paper. Some dampstaining to lower margin of one painting; both with foxing to verso and remnants of hinges to upper corners.

1788 - Bound in red morocco for Charles III of Spain, extremely rare, including both parts. 1788-93. Madrid. Viuda de Ibarra. In 4to (238 mm x 170 mm). 1 [blank] + portrait frontispiece + 3 ff. + xvi + 359 + 4 folding maps & 4 folding tables; 2 ff. + 128 + 1 folding tables and 1 folding map. Contemporary red morocco gilt, with supralibros of Charles III on boards, double-fillet and roll-tooled borders to boards, raised bands to spine with simple tooling, green morocco lettering piece, blue silk endpapers, spots of soiling and very light rubbing, else fine. A very good copy overall, tall and clean, only light occasional marginal damp. 16,000 $ First edition, a fine copy bound in red morocco with the arms of Charles III of Spain, bound post mortem, as the Apendice was printed in 1793 and Charles III died in 1793; normally only the Relacion –and even then is quite rare- is found bound for Charles III, copies with both works bound together with the arms are excessively rare. The fact that even after the King´s death there was a desire to have the book presented with his arms is a testament to the magnitude of the expedition commissioned by the crown, and the respect held for the King. This is considered one of the best descriptions of the Strait of Magellan and the Patagonia of the 18th century. It is based on the scientific explorations undertaken by Captain Antonio de Cordoba on board the frigate Santa Maria de la Cabeza, with the aim of exploring the Patagonia and determine the continuity of use of the Strait for Spanish ships in voyages to the Pacific; the results were negative: “After these expeditions the Spanish trade routes were exclusively to east ports and then overland to the Pacific ports” (Hill). Vargas y Ponce, to whom authorship is normally attributed, used also the journals of lieutenants Galiano and Belmonte, who sailed with Cordoba. In 1793, an Appendix was published “Obra interesante y bien publicada” (Palau); this later part is more of a historical view of former expeditions, including those of Drake and Bougainville. The illustration comprises –between the Relacion and the Apendice- five large folding maps (“Carta reducida del Estrecho de Magallanes”, “Carta Esferica de la parte sur de la América Meridional”, and two multi-inset maps of ports), a frontispiece portrait of Fernando de Magallanes by Selma, and five folding tables.         THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER [and] A COMPANION TO THE ALTAR [with] A NEW VERSION OF THE PSALMS OF DAVID

Edinburgh: printed by the assigns of Alexander Kincaid, 1788, 1785. n. Looking very pretty on the shelf, this is an elegant Edinburgh binding with Neoclassical elements that hint at the influence of James Scott. Working outside the two traditional Scottish geometrical manners of decoration--the so-called "wheel" or "herringbone" styles--Scott (fl. 1773-84) made a significant divergent contribution to British bookbinding, and his work is highly prized. Whoever is responsible for our binding, (s)he has exhibited a measure of Scott's originality, and shows notable subtlety in the facile use of tools.. 178 x 108 mm. (7 x 4 1/4"). [216] leaves. VERY PLEASING CONTEMPORARY SCOTTISH CRIMSON MOROCCO, HANDSOMELY GILT, covers with single fillet outer border and entwined feather and bead gilt roll as inner border, smooth spine panels decorated with gilt curls at corners and one of three large and elegant centerpieces (spider's web within starburst, urn with garland, and urn with stylized bird alighting on its finial), black morocco label, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Verso of first preliminary blank neatly signed in ink by early owner Helen Campbell. Griffiths 1788/9. Upper joint a bit rubbed and flaked, faint soiling to covers, one gathering trivially browned, but an excellent copy, clean and fresh internally, and in a solid binding that still gleams.         A Critical Examination of the Marquis de Chatellux's Travels in North America in a letter addressed to the Marquis; principally intended as a refutation of his opinions concerning the Quakers, the Negroes, the People, and mankind.

Joseph James, Phildaelphia, PA 1788 - This pamphlet has been beautifully and expertly bound, mimicking common practices from the late 18th century. The pamphlet itself has a newly sewn binding, with matching end papers. These have been lightly pasted into a cardstock wrapping, as was a common practice at the time. Those few who could afford to own books often purchased the printed portion of the book in one location, which was in turn leather-bound to match the rest of their library. This very scarce pamphlet might have once been part of a larger bound collection of pamphlets. This pamphlet is an impassioned editorial criticizing one aspect of a book by François Jean de Beauvoir, Marquis de Chastellux (1734-1788). The Marquis had served in the American Revolutionary War, and upon his return wrote extensively about his experience. In it, Brissot claims, he spoke out with a harsh bias against the Quakers for being gloomy, insipid, churlish and amoral, the African American slaves as not human enough to understand and feel badly about their predicament, and the American people in general as something less than even the French peasants for their affectations and government. A notable portion of the pamphlet addresses the fundamental immorality of slavery, particularly based on skin color. New professional binding, using a reproduction card stock cover, and matching pastedowns. Title block on gray wraps is an aged copy of the pamphlet's title page. Interior is free of writing and intentional marks. Inside pages are tanned, with light scattered foxing and some smudges. Occasional tiny chip or tear or crease to interior page edge. Stored in a plastic sleeve for safe keeping and preservation. Book may exhibit additional minor signs of age or wear. 89 pages. 5.5 x 8.75 inches. Postage for oversized and international shipping will be calculated by size and weight. AbeBooks shipping quotes are ESTIMATES only.         Aurelii prudentii Clementis V.C. Opera omnia nunc primum cum codd. Vaticanis collata praefatione, variantibus lectionibus, notis, ac rerum verborumque indice locupletissimo aucta et illustrata.

Parmae: Ex Regio typographeo 4to (31.5 cm, 12.5"). 2 vols. I: [12], 71, [1], 302, [2], [303]–61, [3] pp. II: [4], 215, [1], 219–84, [2] pp. (text complete despite pagination).. 1788 First edition of Prudentius from the Bodoni press. Prudentius (348 – ca. 410) was a Roman Christian poet born in Northern Spain, known for the asceticism he adopted late in life as well as for his lyric (Cathemerinon, Peristephanon), didactic (Apotheosis, Hamartigenia, Psychomachia), and polemical works (Contra Symmachum). The Psychomachia is particularly notable as one of the earliest Western examples of allegorical verse, exerting much influence on the subsequent medieval development of that genre. This is a typically handsome Bodoni production with wide margins, an elegant type, and a different engraved vignette on each title-page; Dibdin calls it “one of the most beautiful editions of a classical author I ever beheld.” Recent half vellum and paper–covered sides, vellum edges graced with gilt single fillet, spines with gilt-stamped leather title and volume labels and with gilt-stamped Greek key design; binding discolored and a little bubbled from proximity to fire. Edges untrimmed, signatures unopened; vol. I with surprisingly various old waterstaining, sometimes faint and sometimes not, in upper margins of first half and outer margins of last few leaves. Interior of both volumes otherwise clean, with no markings, save that the endpapers are smudged and those untrimmed edges, plus occasional small areas of margin contiguous, are darkly smokestained from that fire. => This is a book that has suffered, yet a production that is still as lovely as Dibdin said it was and a set well worth having.

The Works of James Thomson [inscribed] 'W.M Rossetti from Christina's Books 1894' [&] 'Frances M.L. Polidori from her Aunt Harriet Nov.br 26th 1823'

London: A Strahan for J Rivington and Sons, 1788 Book. Very Good. Full-Leather. Signed by Author(s). [3 volumes] Christina Rossetti's set of the poet James Thomson's works. Bound in tree calf and rebacked to style with reinforcement to the inner hinges, the three volumes have an impeccably chronicled provenance. The first owner 'Harriet Pierce' has recorded her ownership on the title page of each of the three volumes. Pierce was the English aunt of Frances Polidori, sister of Byron's physician John William Polidori who wrote The Vampyre. Frances has recorded the gift of the books on the first blank of each volume thus: 'Frances M.L. Polidori from her Aunt Harriet Nov.br 26th 1823'. At the time of her aunt's gift Frances was shortly to be married to the Italian exile Gabriele Rossetti (the books may have been a wedding present) with whom she had several children including the artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti, the writer William Michael Rossetti and her youngest child, the poet Christina Rossetti who was born four years after her mother received these volumes from 'Granny Pierce' as the children would come to know her. In due course these books entered Christina's collection and the final inscription by her brother William Michael Rossetti records that fact after Christina's death, appearing on Volume I only: 'W.M Rossetti from Christina's books 1894'. Evidently Christina's books were dispersed through her family after her death with these passing to her brother. A number of similarly inscribed volumes entered into the Norman Colbeck collection of nineteenth century and Edwardian poetry and belle lettres now held at the Library of British Columbia. A fascinating copy..
