Palau, 74339. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A comparative statement of the two bills, for the better government of the British possessions in India, brought into Parliament by Mr. Fox and Mr. Pitt ... second edition.

London: J. Debrett 4to (28.5 cm, 11.25"). 39, [1 (blank)] pp.. 1788 Second edition. Sheridan entered Parliament in 1780, crowning his previous career as a successful playwright and theatre manager with a long and distinguished record of public service. He originally read the main portion of this statement before the House of Commons as part of the debate, after noticing that the gentlemen discussing the two bills in question appeared not to have paid "any very minute degree of attention" (p. 6) to the details of either one. The texts of both bills are present here, along with Sheridan's analysis of how each would address "the question of right between the public and the [East India] Company" (p. 39). Recent marbled paper–covered boards, front cover with gilt-stamped leather title label and spine with gilt-stamped leather author label. Half-title and several other pages stamped by a now-defunct institution. Pages with edges untrimmed and a few small spots of staining; mostly, clean.

Barcelona: La viuda Piferrer, 1788. Contemporary Spanish dyed calf, spine gilt. Very light dampstaining and foxing in margins, a few minor instances of soiling. A very good copy. The scarce first Spanish edition of John Thayer's account of his conversion to Roman Catholicism after originally training to be a Congregational minister. Thayer received a degree from Yale in 1779, and later went to France, hoping to become Benjamin Franklin's personal chaplain. Franklin was having none of it, and the rejected Thayer converted to Catholicism in 1783. First printed in London in 1787, this popular work went through numerous editions and translations. Before 1800, versions were published in Dutch, French, German, Latin, Portuguese, and Spanish. This Barcelona edition, translated from a French printing, includes two letters. The first is a letter from the author to his brother answering some of his sibling's objections to his conversion; the second is from a young English woman who was received by Thayer into the Catholic Church, written after her first communion. While in Europe, "as a result of theological controversies with priests in France and in Rome, and a reputed miracle of which he had first-hand knowledge, he entered the Roman Catholic Church...Ordained, June 2, 1787, by the archbishop of Paris, he was lionized by ecclesiastics as the first converted American divine, who had grand plans for the conversion of his fellow Puritans...After two years in the London mission, Thayer set forth for Boston, where his arrival (Jan. 4, 1790) and early activities attracted numerous notices in the New England press...In Boston, his tactless zeal, his uncompromising Puritan spirit, his uneasiness under ecclesiastical restraint, and his egotism prevented any degree of success" - DAB. SABIN 95253. OCLC 7571052. DAB XVIII, pp.406-7.

With: (2) [Supplement 1 with views 17-20]. - (3) [Supplement 2 with views 21-24].

Paris, Isidore Stanislas Helman, Nicolas Ponce, 1783-1788. - Oblong Imperial folio (35 x 48.5 cm). A series of 24 numbered engraved views (plate size 27 x 43 cm; image size 24 x 41 cm) of the conquests of the Qianlong Emperor of China in what became Xinjiang province in western China, advancing to the area around the modern Chinese-Kazakhstan border, and the celebrations that followed in Beijing and elsewhere. With reproductions of the engraved explanation of the views, both in the earlier state covering views 1-16 and the later state covering views 1-24.Loose prints in folders in a modern archival box. A fine complete series of 24 large and meticulously engraved views of the western conquests by the Qianlong Emperor (1711-1799), the favourite grandson of the Kangxi Emperor in the Manchu Qing dynasty, who ruled China officially from 1735 to 1796. In the latter year he took the title of Emperor Emeritus, though in fact he held the reins of power to his death in 1799. The first series of 16 views illustrates events from 1754 to 1760, the first and most important of what the Chinese termed Qianlong's ten great military campaigns. From his base in Beijing, he took the Chinese army across the Gobi desert and into the Dzungar Khanate, where he decimated the Zunghars, a nomadic western Mongol people, and made the region into Xinjiang province, establishing the western border of China as we now know it. Hundreds of thousands of Zunghars were killed and most of the few that survived fled to what is now Kazakhstan. The campaign also greatly increased Chinese influence over Mongolia and Tibet. It largely established Chinese control of the highly influential Dalai Lama and set the stage for the suppression of the Turkic-speaking Islamic peoples in the southern part of the province, also covered in the present series. The views give very detailed images of the battles, with large numbers of foot soldiers and cavalry, often with the Chinese troops using Western long guns (as well as cannons) against the Zunghars' bows and arrows. It shows the troops, clothing, arms, camps and fortifications of both sides, and the use of camels and other beasts of burden, all in the spectacular mountainous landscapes of the region. The last three plates of the original sixteen show the presentation of Islamic prisoners to the Emperor, and celebrations of the victory. - The Qianlong Emperor had close relations with Europe and brought several missionaries into his court, mostly Jesuits. In 1765 he ordered the production of a series of 16 European copperplate prints commemorating the campaign against the Zunghars, drawn by the leading European artists in China: the Milanese Jesuit Giuseppe Castiglione (1688-1766), then the most famous European painter in China, the Roman Augustinian Jean Damascène (Sallusti), the Roman Jesuit Jean Denis Attiret (1702-1768) and the Bohemian Jesuit Ignaz Sichelbart (1708- 1780). The first edition was engraved on enormous plates under the direction of Charles-Nicolas Cochin in Paris in the years 1769 to 1774, but few of his prints ever reached China and it was decided to have the present new edition of the same views produced at a more practical scale. It was engraved in Paris from 1783 to 1785 by Isidore Stanislas Helman, who published it together with Nicolas Ponce. This edition was a great success. While the original series stopped with the sixteenth view, Helman added two supplementary series to his edition, each with 4 views, giving a total of 24. The first supplement (1786) shows the ceremonial breaking of new ground with an ox-drawn plough and three views that could be assembled to make one panoramic view of the Emperor's procession through Beijing. The second supplement (1788) shows the Emperor's various celebrations, mostly in honour of his ancestors. - An engraved plate of text was produced to accompany Cochin's first edition of the first 16 views, giving a brief explanation of each view. Helman appears to have acquired the plate and added descriptions of the 8 supplemental plates [Attributes: First Edition]

Paris, Helman and Nicholas Ponce, 1788. - Wholly engraved series, consisting of a title-page, dedication, 24 illustrations and 24 text pages, all printed on one side of a leaf. (With) II: Helman, Isidore-Stanislas. Paris, Helman and Nicholas Ponce, [1788]. Wholly engraved series, consisting of a title-page, 24 illustrations and 28 text pages, all except 8 of the text pages, printed on one side of a leaf. 2 works in 1 volume. 4to. Later gold-tooled, mottled calf, gold-tooled spine, sides, binding edges and dentelles, gilt edges. Deluxe issue, printed on wove paper, of two handsomely engraved print series, with each print accompanied by an engraved text leaf. - The first series is a radically revised version of Dijian tushuo, designed to appeal to educated Parisians. The Dijian tushuo, known in English as The emperor's mirror, was a very popular Chinese work with stories an illustrations of the praise-and blameworthy actions of Chinese emperors, originally composed for the instruction of the young Wanli emperor. A manuscript version of this work was sent to the French minister of finance Henri Bertin, after which Helman modelled his edition. Besides reframing the Chinese historical anecdotes for a French audience, Helman also completely reconceptualised the illustrations. Although Helman intended to publish four instalments, only the present first instalment appeared. "Published in Paris just a year before the French revolution, perhaps the volume was meant as a veiled criticism not only of Louis XVI's policies but also of his wife, Marie-Antoinette" (Reed & Demattè). - The second series is also based on a collection of drawings from the library of Bertin, who had received these from the French Jesuit missionary Joseph-Marie Amiot. Amiot wrote a lengthy biography of Confucius, which was published as Vie de Koung-Tsée, appellé vulgairement Confucius, together with the engravings by Helman, in 1786, simultaneously with the first impression of the present print series. The accompanying text to the plates are short "morales de Confucius" from Collection des moralistes anciens (1782). - As stated on the title-page, ad 1 could be purchased unbound, at 12 livres; in paper wrappers, at 13 livres and 10 francs; unbound on wove paper for 18 livres; on large paper to accompany the Batailles de la Chine and hand-coloured on "papier de Hollande". Both series are here printed on wove paper, and ad 2 (usually dated 1786) is, as such, clearly issued together with ad in 1788. - Isidore-Stanislas Helman (1743-ca. 1810), a student of Le Bas, was a successful engraver in service of the Duke of Chratres. In 1785 he had reproduced a then already extremely rare print series illustrating Chinese battles, that was commissioned by the Emperor of China in France. Helman would later engrave the major events of the French Revolution. - A couple occasional spots and some very minor foxing in the upper margins, otherwise a very good copy. The binding has some minor wear along the extremities of the spine, but is also very good. Cohen/De Ricci 479. Cordier, La Chine en France au XVIIIe siècle, pp. 59f. Cordier, Sinica, 587f. I: Titel, 398 S.; II: Titel, 481 S.; III: Titel, 289 S.; IV: Titel, 379 S. Marmorierte Pappbände d.Zt. mit Rückenschild. Stempel a.d. No.1982). Engels, Zu Leben und Werk, S.654, in: Aufklärung in Europa, Weimar u.a. 1999).

Bel exemplaire. INED, 2867 ; Stourm, p. 100 ; Kress, B.1438 ; Goldsmiths, 13644 ; Einaudi, 3357. [Attributes: First Edition]

„Reading modern literary histories, we find a dizzingly long trail of NAUBERT running through much of nineteenth-century, and even twentieth-century, German literature. We discover her works influenced everyone from the German and English romantics to THOMAS MANN. For example [nennt u.a. FOUQUÉ, ARNIM, OEHLENSCHLÄGER, GRILLPARZER, SCHILLER, C.F.MEYER, TIECK, KLEIST]. . The fact is that, as she became a source of broad inspiration, NAUBERT was unable to defend herself against the broad, outright appropriation of her intellectual property.“ (S.C. Jarvis, The Vanished Woman of Great Influence, S.193, in: Goodman / Waldstein [Hrsg.], In the Shadow of Olympus: German Woman Writers, New York 1992).

A Colle, Et se trouve a Paris, Chez Froull... 1788. Four octavo volumes. The Florentine Filippo Mazzei knew the United States more intimately, and was more involved in American life and politics, than any other Italian of the eighteenth century. He had come to know Franklin while representing the Grand Duke in London; he obtained land in Virginia next to young Thomas Jefferson's Monticello and imported laborers from Lucca to raise olives and vines. His Recherches, written after his return to Paris, where he was a champion of the new nation's cause, was the fullest account of the new Republic available to Europeans at the time. The first volume is a constitutional history of the thirteen colonies; the second and third rebut two books critical of America; the fourth is a collection of essays on a variety of subjects including a refutation of charges of anarchy in America, an explanation of paper money, emigration, and on Washington, Lafayette and the Order of the Cincinnati. Altogether the most extensive examination of the United States during the confederation period, written by a sympathetic foreigner. Bound in contemporary red paper boards, leather spine labels. Sabin 47206; DAB XII: 469-470; Sowerby, Catalogue of the Library of Thomas Jefferson 3005; Antonello Gerbi, Dispute of the New World (Pittsburgh, 1973) 268-275; Hough, The Italians and the Creation of America (Providence, 1980) 95. (armorial bookplate); John Lees (armorial bookplate) A fine copy of the first edition of Kippis, the first and most important biography of Captain James Cook. Cook discharged several important duties while aboard the Mercury, on the St. Lawrence River, during the siege of Quebec. The Newfoundland and Labrador surveys are discussed, and the three voyages are dealt with in great narrative depth" (Hill).       Boston: Russell...and Edmund Freeman..., 1788. Contemporary tree calf, spine gilt, leather label. Extremities rubbed. Contemporary ownership inscription on front fly leaf. Lightly foxed. Very good. "These DEBATES were recorded by printers representing the MASSACHUSETTS CENTINEL and INDEPENDENT CHRONICLE in Boston and were reprinted from them. A later edition (1856) included the official journal and notes on the debates kept by Theophilus Parsons, a delegate to the state convention and later chief justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Court. "The ratification process in Massachusetts was viewed with anxiety by supporters of the Constitution throughout the nation. Massachusetts was a key state, and it was thought that actions there might determine the ultimate fate of the Constitution. The struggle was hard, bitter, and characterized by wild rumor and allegations of corrupt behavior...The Federalist strategy was to ratify the Constitution first and then consider amendments to it...On February 6 the Constitution was endorsed by the narrow vote of 187 to 168. Massachusetts became the sixth state to ratify...Massachusetts was the first state to propose amendments along with ratification, setting a pattern for the states that followed. All except Maryland and Rhode Island were to ratify and simultaneously propose amendments" - LIBERTY'S LEGACY. The debates of other states were also extensively published. That of Virginia, where many of the leaders of the Revolution were delegates, appeared in two volumes in 1788.

London: Published by S. Gilpin Knightsbridge, & R. Pollard, N. 15 Braynes Row Spa Fields, 1788. Engraving and aquatint. With hand colour. Printed on laid paper. In excellent condition with the exception of some light scuffing in the margins. A dramatic portrait of Dash, Colonel Thornton's prized pointer, after a painting by Sawrey Gilpin. Sawrey Gilpin studied art under Samuel Scott, the well-known landscape painter. He devoted himself to sporting art and developed a keen eye and hand for horse portraiture. In 1773 he was made a Director of the Society of Artists, and in the following year he was elected President. Gilpin caught the eye of Colonel Thornton who became his chief patron, commissioning such noted paintings as "The Death of the Fox," which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1793. This striking image is a portrait of Colonel Thornton's treasured hound Modish, and is one of two portraits painted by Gilpin of Thornton's hunting dogs. Robert Pollard and Francis Jukes produced many prints together with Pollard doing the etching and Jukes the aquatinting. Siltzer, The Story of British Sporting Prints, 124-125.

A View near Scheveling painted by DeVlieger

London: Published by Molteno & Co. No. 132, Pall Mall, 1788. Etching and aquatint with hand-colour. Lovely contemporary colour. As usual text line is attached on verso of sheet. In excellent condition. Trimmed as usual and mounted on washline background. Mounting sheet is watermarked laid paper. Image size: 14 7/16 x 20 5/8 inches. A charming seaside view by Samuel Ireland, the engraver and collector connected with the infamous Shakespeare forgeries. Ireland was a minor engraver and publisher who worked in London at the close of the eighteenth century. He was an avid art and manuscript collector, and many of the works that he engraved and published were after pieces found in his own collection. This romantic view is after a painting by DeVlieger, which was in Ireland's collection at the time. This image operates as both an example of the picturesque tradition in eighteenth century landscape prints, and as an advertisement and promotion of Ireland's celebrated collection. With this image Ireland presents himself as both a serious engraver and a respected collector. Unfortunately, today Ireland is better remembered for his involvement in the Shakespeare forgeries than for his evocative prints. Over a period of many years Ireland's son, William Henry, sold his father a series of forged manuscripts, which he claimed to be written in Shakespeare's hand. Ireland, who willingly trusted his son, added these forgeries to his collection and presented them in an exhibition to the literary community, who accepted them as genuine. The charade progressed so far that an invented play entitled 'Vortigern', which William Henry had written and presented as a missing work by Shakespeare, was performed at Sheridan's Drury Lane theatre by some of the leading actors of the age. When the hoax was eventually discovered Ireland's reputation was ruined, and his son was disgraced. This print is from the famed Oettingen-Wallerstein collection, which was compiled over two centuries by various members of the royal household. The collection is known for its stunning impressions and the immaculate condition of its prints. Dictionary of National Biography ; Lugt, Les Marques de Collections , (Supplement) 2715a.

[Pair of Prints] To the Right honorable William Pitt ... this Accurate Perspective View of the Outside [.... this Accurate Perspective View of Inside] of the Royal Exchange, in London, is ... Dedicated, by ... J. Chapman

London: published & sold by Mr. Chapman, 1788. Copper engravings by Bartolozzi after Chapman & Lutherburgh. Expert restoration to margins. Sheet sizes: 18 3/4 x 23 inches and 19 x 23 3/8 inches. A famous pair of engravings of the second Royal Exchange by Bartolozzi, one of the greatest engravers of his age. The first image is of the exterior on Cornhill, the second of the interior. There have been three Royal Exchanges, each of which in their heyday were at the heart of what the City of London does best: commerce. The first, based on the Antwerp Bourse was built at the expense of Sir Thomas Gresham in 1565 (the Grasshopper on the top of the present Exchange recalls Gresham's family crest). The site was provided by the Corporation of the City of London and the Mercer's Company. Roughly triangular, it is formed by the converging streets of Cornhill and Threadneedle Street. The present image is of the second exchange. Built on the same site after the Great Fire of London, designed by Edward Jerman and opened in 1669. This too was destroyed by fire on 10 th January 1838. The present exchange, still at the heart of the City of London, built to a design by Sir William Tite was opened in 1845. Heywood's lines about the first Exchange are equally apt for the second: "Not in my life; yet I have been in Venice, In the Rialto there, called Saint Mark's; 'Tis but a bauble, if compared to this. The nearest, that which most resembles this, Is the great Burse in Antwerp, yet no comparable Either in height or wildeness, the fair cellarage, Or goodly shops above. Oh my Lord Mayor, This Gresham hath much graced your city, London; His fame will long outlive him." (Thomas Heywood If You Know Not Me, You Know Nobody part 2 ). Remarkably, the printing plates for both these images still exist and re-strikes are available. The present examples are the "real thing" and not modern reprints.

Paris: A Paris chez Janinet, rue Haute Feuille, No. 5. Et chez Efnauts et Rapilly, rue St. Jacques, a la Ville de Coutances, No. 259, 1788. Mixed method colour print, printed in yellow, blue, red, pink and black inks from five plates. Two registration marks in plate. In excellent condition with wide margins. Image size: 14 x 11 inches. This is considered one of Janinet's masterpieces. From a series of boudoir scenes executed in collaboration with the painter Nicolas Lavreince, it is an exquisite example of a newly devised method of colour printing Jean Francois Janinet (1752-1814) was one of the most accomplished French engravers of the eighteenth century. His beautiful images are among the most sought after prints on the market and they stand as a testimony to the superior quality of early French colour printing. "In 1771 Janinet began to work in Bonnet's atelier where he soon mastered the techniques of multiple-plate colour printing and chalk-manner engraving. On his own, he refined these processes by 1772 to produce the first colour prints in imitation of watercolour and wash drawings. These prints were executed entirely with specialized engraver's tools and without recourse to aquatint". During his career "Janinet made more than eight hundred prints, including 260 in drawing books, three hundred views, 175 costume and theatrical portraits, fifty-six scenes of the significant events of the Revolution, as well as numerous little round prints for buttons and box tops, few of which survive". Janinet's best work is exemplified in this beautiful print, which was published as part of a series of twelve. The series was executed in collaboration with the celebrated Swedish artist Nicolas Lavreince. In Paris during the latter part of the eighteenth century there developed a fashion for titillating pictures of intimate boudoir scenes. This print is a wonderful example of this trend, as well as a lovely impression of the engraving. "L'Indiscretion" was published by Janinet in 1788 as the third print in his famous collaborative series with Lavreince. Typical of this genre of French printmaking "L'Indiscretion" is set in an extravagant boudoir where two young women fight for the possession of a love letter.         An Account of the Pelew Islands, situated in the western part of the Pacific Ocean

London: printed for G. Nicol, 1788. Stipple-engraved portrait frontispiece of Wilson by I. Heath after I. Russell, 16 engraved plates and maps (comprised of 1 folding map, 1 folding coastal profile, 3 views, 3 portraits and 8 other plates), extra-illustrated with 1 plate from the 1803 fifth edition of the same work. [ with :] John Pearce HOCKIN (1773?-1831). A supplement to the account of the Pelew Islands. London; printed for Captain Henry Wilson by W. Bulmer & Co, sold by G. & W.Nicol [and others], 1803. Half-title. 2 works in one volume, 4to (12 1/2 x 9 7/8 inches). Contemporary half russia, uncut, rebacked, later endpapers. Provenance : Sir Robert George Wyndham Herbert (1831-1905, bookplate). A fine, large, completely uncut set of the first edition of this highly popular and very readable work on the Palau Islands, together with the subsequent supplement, with an appropriate provenance. From the library of a British colonial administrator of the first rank: the governor of Queensland, under-secretary of the colonies, etc. Keate's Pelew Islands was one of the most popular eighteenth-century books on the Pacific, and remains the main source for early knowledge of the Palau Islands in Micronesia and has been described as 'a splendid yarn of danger and adventure in the South Seas and the most thoroughgoing and elaborate presentation of the noble savage in the literature of the South Seas' ( European Vision and the South Pacific , pp. 136-7). "In 1783 the Antelope, commanded by Captain Henry Wilson, was wrecked on a reef near one of the Palau (Pelew) Islands, a previously unexplored group. The entire crew managed to get safely ashore, where they were well treated by the natives and eventually managed to build a small vessel from the wreck, in which they reached Macao. They took Prince Lee Boo, one of King Abba Thulle's sons, with them to England, where he made a good impression. Unhappily, in spite of all precautions, he soon died of smallpox. George Keate ... composed this relation from the journals and communications of Captain Wilson and some of his officers. The Account ... was extremely popular, and in 1788 and 1789 four editions were printed in London..." (Hill p.321). "After the death of Prince Lee Boo (sometimes called Libu) ... the East India Company sent two ships under Captain John M'Cluer to convey the unfortunate news to Abba Thule, the king of the Palau Islands. The Company also sent out gifts of cattle, domestic animals, plants, and seeds to the inhabitants. The Englishmen and the Palau islanders established friendly relationships, and the ships stayed intermittently for over a year, allowing the crew to teach the natives how to plant and cultivate the new crops. Each ship left for a few months at a time to survey the coast of New Guinea and to visit the coast of China ... After a time, M'Cluer married an island woman, resigned his commission, acquired a plantation, and became a Palau chieftain. After a year and a quarter, M'Cluer grew tired of the solitude, and he managed to reach the coast of China in a native boat ... He returned to Palau for his family and then sailed for Calcutta, India, where they were to live. Hockin's narrative ... was originally published as part of the fifth edition of Keate's work published in London in 1803. Some copies [as here] were issued as thin quarto separates, so that owners of the 1788 editions of Keate could bind the two together as one volume" (Hill pp.289-290). This copy is from the library of Sir Robert George Wyndham Herbert, G.C.B., who held the office of Premier of Queensland between 1859 and 1866; was Assistant Under-Secretary of the Colonial Office between 1869 and 1871; Under-Secretary of the Colonies between 1871 and 1892; and Agent-General of Tasmania between 1893 and 1896.       [London, 1788. Folio. Four of the titles string-tied, as issued. First title lightly foxed and toned. Very good. In a half morocco and marbled boards box, spine gilt. An interesting assemblage of British legislation from the period immediately following the Revolutionary War, documenting British efforts to allow only very limited trade with the newly independent United States. British trade policy during this period is an excellent example of a foreign power taking advantage of the weak structure of the American Articles of Confederation, which made it difficult for the thirteen states to act in concert and out of a any position of strength through unity. By 1783 the United States had formal trade relations with only two nations: France, secured through the 1778 Treaty of Amity and Commerce; and the Netherlands, via a Commercial Treaty negotiated by John Adams in 1782. Before the Revolution, British merchants had relied heavily on exports sent to the British colonies in North America, which greatly outweighed goods imported to Britain from the colonies. After the war the British government was reluctant to sign a formal commercial treaty with the United States. The states at the time were operating under the relatively weak structure of the Articles of Confederation, and the British felt that they could secure the benefits of trade with the American states without making any treaty concessions. Britain opted instead for a series of acts that established limited trade with the United States and between the United States and Canada and the British colonies in the West Indies. The first of these laws was passed in 1783, and the evolution of that law is reflected in the first three items below. In all, these British laws severely circumscribed American trade with England and with English colonies, though they did allow some markets for American exports, and did facilitate the flow of much needed imports into the United States. In 1784, British exports to the United States were valued at more than £3.5 million, while American exports to England were less than one-fifth of that sum. The United States and Great Britain would not sign a formal trade treaty until the Jay Treaty, which was approved in 1795 and which gave the United States limited trading rights in the British West Indies. The first, second, third, and fifth titles below were printed in very small numbers for the use of members of Parliament during debate and action on the bills. Known as "slip bills," they are a snapshot of the legislation as it proceeded through the legislative process. The first and fifth titles contain blank spaces in the text where dates and tariff rates would be filled in later, and all four of the slip bills have printed docketing on the final page. The first and fifth items also contain a printed note before the text of the bill reading "the figures in the margin denote the Number of the Folios in the written copy," which indicates just how early in the legislative process these bills were printed. The four bills and one act included in this group are: 1) A BILL FOR THE PROVISIONAL ESTABLISHMENT AND REGULATION OF TRADE AND INTERCOURSE BETWEEN THE SUBJECTS OF GREAT BRITAIN AND THOSE OF THE UNITED STATES OF NORTH AMERICA [caption title]. [London. 1783]. 3,[1]pp. This bill gives the United States the same trading status as other independent sovereign states, but restricts American exports to Great Britain only to those goods that are "the growth, produce, or manufacture of the said United States." It thus forbad the "triangular" trade in which American merchants liked to engage, while not imposing the same restriction on British exporters. ESTC locates only five copies. ESTC N32490. BELL G578 (ref). 2) A BILL [AS AMENDED IN THE COMMITTEE] FOR THE PROVISIONAL ESTABLISHMENT AND REGULATION OF TRADE AND INTERCOURSE BETWEEN THE SUBJECTS OF GREAT BRITAIN AND THOSE OF THE UNITED STATES OF NORTH AMERICA [caption title]. [London. 1783]. 5,[1]pp. This bill expands on and further defines the previous bill, clearly spelling out the limitations on American trade with England while imposing no such restrictions on English merchants, and in fact making every provision to facilitate British exports to America. ESTC locates six copies. ESTC N32061. 3) A BILL [AS AMENDED IN THE COMMITTEE TO WHOM THE SAME WAS RE-COMMITTED] FOR THE PROVISIONAL ESTABLISHMENT AND REGULATION OF TRADE AND INTERCOURSE BETWEEN THE SUBJECTS OF GREAT BRITAIN AND THOSE OF THE UNITED STATES OF NORTH AMERICA [caption title]. [London. 1783]. 5,[1]pp. As with the previous two versions of this bill, the language here explains that it would be "highly expedient" to have a trade treaty with the United States, but until that point England would make due with legislation regulating Anglo-American commerce. The same restrictive language regarding exports from America is carried over. ESTC locates only five copies. ESTC N32016. 4) AN ACT TO EXTEND THE POWERS OF AN ACT...FOR GIVING HIS MAJESTY CERTAIN POWERS FOR THE BETTER CARRYING ON TRADE AND COMMERCE BETWEEN THE SUBJECTS OF HIS MAJESTY'S DOMINIONS AND THE INHABITANTS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, TO THE TRADE AND COMMERCE OF THIS KINGDOM WITH THE BRITISH COLONIES AND PLANTATIONS IN AMERICA...[caption title]. London: Printed by Charles Eyre and William Strahan, 1784. [2],715-716pp. This law specifically relates to British exports of iron, hemp and sail cloth from the Baltic states to the United States. ESTC locates only three copies. ESTC N58431. BELL G585. 5) A BILL FOR REGULATING THE TRADE BETWEEN THE SUBJECTS OF HIS MAJESTY'S COLONIES AND PLANTATIONS IN NORTH AMERICA AND IN THE WEST INDIA ISLANDS, AND THE COUNTRIES BELONGING TO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA; AND BETWEEN HIS MAJESTY'S SAID SUBJECTS AND THE FOREIGN ISLANDS IN THE WEST INDIES [caption title]. [London. 1788]. 9,[1]pp. This bill essentially prohibits American trade with Britain's colonies in the West Indies and prohibits American exports to Canada as well. The sole exemption is with regard to salt from the Turks Islands, a product the English wanted to encourage. The bill allows American ships to receive salt on the islands. It also limits exports from the West Indies to America on such goods as sugar, molasses, coffee, etc. to British ships only. ESTC locates only four copies. ESTC T201245. RAGATZ, p.95. BELL G618 (ref). An important group of rare working drafts of British legislation.

Earls von Bristol Frederick Hervey einige Gedichtbände. Ihr einflussreichstes Werk ist allerdings das hier vorliegende "Poem on the Inhumanity of the Slave - Trade". Besitzstempel "v. Zach" (eventuell Franz Xaver v.         A Short Treatise on the Application of Steam, Whereby is Clearly Shewn, From Actual Experiments, That Steam May be Applied to Propel Boats or Vessels of Any Burthen Against Rapid Currents With Great Velocity. The Same Principles are Also Introduced with Effect, by a Machine of a Simple and Cheap Construction, for the Purpose of Raising Water Sufficient for the Working of Grist-Mills, Saw-Mills, &c. and for Watering Meadows and Other Purposes of Agriculture

Philadelphia: printed by Joseph James, 1788. Small octavo. (8 3/4 x 5 3/8 inches). [1-]26 pp. Contemporary paper wrappers, early manuscript title on upper wrapper, uncut (wrappers with repaired tears) Provenance: W.H.H. Newman (Buffalo, New York, bookplate and signature on title) Second edition, second issue of this important early pamphlet on steam navigation by one of the two American steam pioneers. James Rumsey's pamphlet was first published under a slightly different title ( A plan wherein the power of steam is fully shewn... ) in 1788. It was then reprinted with this title, in two different issues (the first with the word 'chep' on the title, the second with the word correctly spelled, as here). Rumsey states in the "Advertisement" on the verso of the title that this pamphlet is reprinted from "a pamphlet published in Virginia, to prove the authors prior right of applying steam, to propel boats &c. as well as to establish the principles on which he has done it, a few copies were then thought sufficient for that purpose, but as Mr. Fitch intends to answer the pamphlet, it is therefore necessary to re-publish as much of it as respects Mr. Fitch, which is done with no other variation, from the original, than to correct a few of the omissions and mistakes that were introduced into the first publication". Rumsey and John Fitch entered into a controversy over whose steam-powered boat had priority. Fitch was the first to publicize his invention and obtained a 14-year privilege for the manufacture of steam vessels, giving him a virtual monopoly on its production in America. Rumsey's pamphlet prompted John Fitch to reply by publishing his Original steamboat supported , (1788) in which Fitch attacked Rumsey's claim to priority. Though neither man was financially successful, Fitch went on to inaugurate the first commercial steamboat service on the Delaware River in 1790.
