Da Asia de Joáo Barros e de Diogo de Couto, Nova Edição...

Lisbon: Regia Officina Typographica, 1788. 24 volumes, duodecimo, with four portraits and five folding maps; contemporary blonde speckled calf. This extensive set is a fundamental travel book, and the basis for any history of Portuguese exploration. This is the first collected edition of the "Decades" of João de Barros and Diogo de Couto, chronicling the first Portuguese discoveries in Asia, as well as Africa and Brazil. Its twenty-four volumes contain an extraordinary wealth of detail regarding the Portuguese in the East Indies and elsewhere in the New World. An idea of its significance may be gained simply by glancing at the many indexes to the various volumes of Donald Lach's majestic Asia in the Making of Europe, all of which contain multiple extensive references to Barros's work. The Portuguese historian and civil servant Barros had equipped an expedition to the Amazon, but its failure brought him to the verge of poverty. His mercantile ambitions destroyed, Barros retreated into the sanctuary of historical studies. Written at the instigation of the king, Barros first published Décadas da Asia in the middle of the sixteenth century, and it is still regarded as one of the supreme accounts of European exploration and colonisation, and famously includes work on Magellan and his discoveries in the Americas. The first volume, Asia de Ioam de Barros, was published in 1552, and the subsequent volumes of his work in 1555, 1563 and 1615. The authenticity of the fourth, published much later, has been questioned. Its vigour and scope are such that it is one of the founding works of Portuguese literature. It was continued by Diogo de Couto, royal historiographer to Phillip II, whose work is generally more critical. Couto not only furthers Barros's original discussion, but also expands on the arguments for the decline of Portuguese influence in the east. The first eight volumes of this set consist of the four original Décadas; volume nine is a life of Barros by Manoel Severin de Faria together with an index; the remaining fourteen volumes comprise all of Couto's ensuing books, the last volume an index. A fine crisp set.

        Reigning Abominations

1788. First Edition . WINCHESTER, Elhanan. The Reigning Abominations, Especially the Slave Trade, Considered as Causes of Lamentations; Being the Substance of a Discourse Delivered in Fairfax County, Virginia, December 30, 1774. And Now Published With Several Additions. London: H. Trapp, 1788. Slim octavo, period-style three quarter black cloth and marbled boards; pp. 32. $3800.First edition, first printing of this very early indictment of slavery, a powerful sermon delivered in Virginia in 1774, declaring slavery a ""national sin,"" with accounts of slaves brutally tortured and his ominous warning ""that some revolution is at the door.""Massachusetts-born Winchester, one of America's first antislavery voices, ""spent the years 1774-80 in South Carolina preaching to both whites and blacks. He delivered this antislavery sermon on December 30, 1774, in Fairfax County, Virginia, calling on slave-owners to renounce slavery because 'it is an accursed thing, for which the wrath of God will be poured out upon this nation,' and ominously predicting 'that some revolution is at the door'"" (American Antislavery Writings, Library of America). An electrifying orator, he came of age just as Americans began their Revolutionary struggle for freedom, when ""the language of liberty, war, and frontier migration opened debate on the meaning of freedom, authority, and democracy… Winchester's writings against slavery gained him fame among northern abolitionists during the 1840s. During his southern travels Winchester became convinced that slavery was an 'abomination'… he argued forcefully that slave holding and slave trading were evils that debased all involved"" (ANB).One of the first in South Carolina to baptize African slaves, Winchester called slavery ""an unparalleled 'national sin' that would inspire 'national punishment,' including military defeat. In effect, he foresaw a civil war"" (Gilbert, Black Patriots and Loyalists, 54). First published in London in 1788, this was likely printed ""to bolster the newly formed English Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade (henceforth English Abolition Society) while Winchester was living there"" (Gould, Barbaric Traffic, 17). Just as famed British abolitionists Anthony Benezet and Thomas Clarkson would appeal ""to the commercial interests of Britons to countervail the greed they see fueling the trade… Winchester argues in his antislavery sermon that 'avarice tends to harden the heart, to render the mind callous to the feelings of humanity'"" (Gottlieb, Global Romanticism, 180). He powerfully evokes the brutality of the slave trade and Middle Passage, writing: ""Loaded with chains, confined in putrid air, exhausted with hunger, thirst, sorrow and despair, many die in the voyage… This abomination is sufficient to make the land desolate and waste… If the words of Christ are true, the slaves will at length be free."" ESTC T150025. Sabin 104732. Howes W554. Faint inkstamp, ""Bound N.Y.H.S. May 10 1943,"" with deaccession inkstamp ""Withdrawn N-YHS.""Text fresh with only light scattered foxing. A rare about-fine copy.

        Méchanique analitique.

Paris: Veuve Desaint, 1788. First edition of "perhaps the most beautiful mathematical treatise in existence. It contains the discovery of the general equations of motion, the first epochal contribution to theoretical dynamics after Newton's Principia" (Evans). "Lagrange's masterpiece, the Méchanique Analitique (Paris, 1788), laid the foundations of modern mechanics, and occupies a place in the history of the subject second only to that of Newton's Principia." ?Grolier/Horblit 61; Evans 10; Dibner 112; Sparrow 120; Norman 1257. "With the appearance of the Mecanique Analytique in 1788, Lagrange proposed to reduce the theory of mechanics and the art of solving problems in that field to general formulas, the mere development of which would yield all the equations necessary for the solution of every problem ... [it] united and presented from a single point of view the various principles of mechanics, demonstrated their connection and mutual dependence, and made it possible to judge their validity and scope." (DSB). "In the preface of the book La Grange proudly points to the complete absence of diagrams, so lucid is his presentation. He regarded mechanics (statics and dynamics) as a geometry of four dimensions and in this book set down the principle of virtual velocities as applied to mechanics." (Dibner). 4to (250 x 195 mm), pp [i-v] vi-xii, [1-] 2-512, contemporary half calf, small chip to the upper capital, light wear to corner, otherwise fine and unrestored, internally a fresh and clean throughout.

Réflexions sur la formation et la distribution des richesses.

[Paris?]: [publisher unknown], 1788. 1st Edition. Soft cover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo (220 x 133 mm). [5] 6-136 pp. Uncut in contemporary paper wrappers. Leaves carefully cleaned, some minor remaining spotting and marginal finger soiling, a few leaves with paper repairs of tears to blank fore-margin, pp. 39/40 with repaired tear to upper corner just touching page numbers. Still a very good, unmarked and untrimmed copy. ----Einaudi 5772; En francais dans le texte 165 (citing the work's publication in the Ephemerides); Goldsmiths' 13536; Kress B.1506. RARE FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM. Turgot's principal work, first published in 1769-70 in the Ephemerides du citoyen, was addressed to two young Chinamen who, "having been brought to France and educated by the Jesuits, were then sent back to Canton with a royal annuity and the task of maintaining a correspondence on the state of literature and science in China." (Palgrave III, 592). The work is divided into a hundred sections tracing the existence of commmerce to the unequal distribution of land, the diversity of the soil in fitness for production, the multiplicity of human needs, and the advantages of the division of labour. It was read by and had considerable influence upon Adam Smith, and was one of the most important economic texts to be published before Wealth of Nations. Very Good.

THE ADVENTURES OF A SILVER PENNY. Including Many Secret Anecdotes of Little Misses and Masters both Good and Naughty.

Wood-engraved frontispiece signed 'Bwk', [4], 126 pages. 12 woodcuts in text. Original Dutch floral boards. One of two variants of this edition with the frontis' either found signed or unsigned by Bewick. Lacks rear endpaper; re-backed at some time in matching 18th century paper; inscription on front fixed endpaper and the bookplate of Sydney Roscoe;; small corner torn from top outer edge of title; else a very good copy of a rare work contained in a folding cloth, gilt box. Roscoe J3920. Originally Sydney Roscoe's copy with his bookplate and note on rear endpaper, later Margaret Weedon's. According to Nigel Tattersfield's research, this title was first published as Roscoe suggested, in 1786. However, 'the original woodcuts were undistinguished and it was not long before JB was commissioned to provide a completely new set. It was probably amongst the 'several Jobs for Newbery' that John reported to his brother he had done on his own account by mid-February 1788. It is salutary to compare the cuts however, for John improves the original illustrations out of all recognition.' The British Library has the original edition of 1786. Clearly the above copy is the Bewick edition of circa 1788.

[?Piramo e Tisbe]. Rondò Nel Lasciarti Amato Bene. Musical manuscript full score. Italian. Ca. 1788

Oblong folio (320 x 230 mm.). Sewn. [i] (title), 41, [ii] (blank), 4 pp. Notated in ink on 10-stave paper. Ascription: "Der Sig:r Mae:o Angelo Tarchi." Header to title in copyist's hand: "In Pisa nel Primavera dell'Anno 1788 Cantato dall'Celebre Sig:r Pietro Muschietti." "Po I No. 11 [?14]" to lower left corner of title. Various watermarks (three crescents, etc.). Aria of Piramo (soprano castrato). Ten-stave system. Scored for [2] Violini, [2] Oboe, [2] Corni [in F], [2] Viole, voice, unfigured instrumental bass. In F major. A second text underlay has been added in a different hand to several passages (written below the instrumental bass). Incipit: "Ho perduto Ogni mio bene..." Final four pages (one bifolium of different paper; watermark of three crescents) notated in a different hand; apparently added later. Note to upper left corner of first extra page: "Rec:vo antecedente a questo che siegue dovrà posare i in alamire terza min:e, a in elami con sesta e terza min:e." Five-stave systems; scored for [2] Violins, Viola, voice [Piramo?], and unfigured instrumental bass. Recitative modulates from D minor to B-flat major. Text incipit: Eh mio Signore Ciò[?] possibil non è Troppo son gravi Le angustie del mio cor. It is not clear whether this recitative belongs to the same work as the aria; there is no trace of the "recitativo antecedente." Spine and edges of some leaves frayed. An enigmatic item. RISM lists no piece with the same music but several with the same text - arias from Giovanni Battista Borghi's Piramo e Tisbe (libretto by Gaetano Sertor), Filippo Maria Gherardeschi's Artaserse, Giuseppe Giordani's L'Acomate, Nicola Zingarelli's La morte de Cesare, etc. The identification of the character as "Piramo" in the present manuscript points to an opera on the subject of Pyramus and Thisbe, using the same libretto as Borghi's; Tarchi, however, has never been credited with such an opera. In addition, Gino dell'Ira's I teatri di Pisa 1773-1986, which chronicles all operatic performances in the city, mentions neither Tarchi nor any opera on the subject of Pyramus and Thisbe; likewise, the singer Pietro Muschietti is not mentioned. The ascription and note on the Pisa performance to the title of the present manuscript are thus somewhat puzzling. The unusual division of the violas might offer a clue to the authorship of the work upon further research.

An incomplate but important set. Volumes 1 through 11 (incomplete) were printed in 1787 for J. Buckland, etc. and are titled as being "The Works of Samuel Johnson...in Eleven Volumes." Volumes 12 and 13, also dated 1787, were, however, printed for John Stockdale and titled as "The Works of Samuel Johnson...in Thirteen Volumes." Volume 14, also printed for John Stockdale but dated 1788, is titled, "The Works of Samuel Johnson...in Fourteen Volumes." Presumably, the owner purchased the first 11 volumes as a complete set and then, as subsequent sets were printed more completely, he added to the set. Volumes 12 and 13, as noted on the page following each title page, are Volumes I and II (complete) of the Debates in Parliament. Most of these volumes contain the bookplate of "Richard Curson, jun." and it is presumed that he is the same individual referred to in this text, found in a blogspot relating to Elizabeth Becker Curson (who was born in New York City in 1731): "Elizabeth Becker's final living son, Richard Curson, Jr., was born on 1763 in New York, and fled to Baltimore, in 1777, with his parents. In 1784, he married Elizabeth Moale, had 3 children who lived to maturity, and lived at his parents' home until 1803. Elizabeth had worried about this son Richard for years. He was in ailing health and suffered from a spinal disease since early childhood. In 1787, Elizabeth Becker Curson died and was buried at Old Saint Paul's Episcopal Church Cemetery in Baltimore. In 1805, Richard Curson Sr. died and was buried next to his wife. The following year, their son Richard was declared a lunatic by the Chancery Court of Maryland. The custody of his person & property were given to Samuel Vincent, who had administered the estate for the elder Curson and his wife, Elizabeth Becker Curson. Richard Jr. died on June 14, 1808, and was buried next to his parents in Baltimore." Fair only. Text blocks are clean and solid, with uniform aging and all have matching marbled endpapers. Several covers are detached, but all are present. Most have one of two types of Richard Curson, Junior's oval bookplate, as noted in the detailed description. Still an impressive, if incomplete run of these first editions.

A Description of all the Bursae Mucosae of the Human Body, their Structure Explained, and Compared with that of the Capsular Ligaments of the Joints, and of those Sacs which line the Cavities of the Thorax and Abdomen...

Edinburgh: 1788. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Imperial folio. Tall folio (477 x 285mm). 10 engraved plates including four folding (several marginal closed tears without loss), library stamps to title and plates, some spotting and soiling throughout, Birmingham Library bookplate to front pastedown, near-contemporary cloth, rubbed and soiled, some loss to head and foot of spine. ---Garrison-Morton 399.2; Heirs of Hippocrates 1011; NLM/Blake p. 309; Russell 613; Wellcome IV p. 156. - FIRST EDITION. "The first serious study of this subject and the most original anatomical work by the greatest of the Monro dynasty" (Garrison-Morton). "This classic work contains the first full anatomical description of the sacs between the tendons and bones which Albinus had named the bursae mucosae. They are illustrated on ten plates which for explicit clarity and accuracy have not been improved upon" (Heirs of Hippocrates). Of these plates, four are particularly remarkable for having life-sized representations of the arm and leg bones - from finger and toe-tip to shoulder and hip bone. Each of these is constructed from two sheets and as a result, some copies of the work are found with the plates in two parts, and others incomplete. Very Good.
