Plan of the Siege of Charlestown in South Carolina.

March 1st 1787, London: - This early map of Charleston Harbor illustrates in great detail the siege of Charleston by the British forces in early 1780 at the start of their Southern Campaign of the American Revolutionary War. It features geographical and topographical details, major routes, street plan, forts, ships and waterways. The map seems to have been issued at least four or five times: in 1787 and possibly later, a presumed separate issue; in Tarleton's "History of the Campaigns" (1787 & 1796), 1793 in Faden's "Atlas of Battles of the American Revolution"; and in 1794 in Stedman's "History of the Origin, Progress and Termination of the American War" (with textual changes.) Printed on laid paper with old folds indicating inclusion in a book, but without any detectable tabbing on either the back or margins. We presume that this is from Tarleton's "A History of the Campaigns." with the imprint "London Publifh'd March 1ft.1787." below the neat line within the plate mark. Original spot hand color on barricades colored either yellow or with a slanted red line. 10" h x 11 1/2" w. The named of Hobcaw Creek appears with the word "Creek" printed beneath "Hobcaw" and there is no solid black margin line inside the plate mark that appears in the Stedman edition. See Sellers & Van Ee, "Maps and Charts of North America and the West Indies", #1561 for the Faden "Atlas" edition, which is plate (10) and lists "Gibbes Landing" rather than the "Gibbs Landing" of this edition. A little very faint foxing, but very pleasing overall.

[AUTOGRAPH DOCUMENTS, SIGNED, BEING COPIES OF THE PROCEEDINGS IN NEW JERSEY FOR THE ATTAINDER OF J.T. KEMPE AND HIS WIFE GRACE, AND ON THE CONFISCATION OF THEIR PROPERTY]

Elizabethtown, 1787. 8; 4pp. Folio. Documents creased and lightly soiled. First leaf with a few tears and some paper loss, minutely affecting text. Very good. Additional four pages: Quarto, on a folded folio sheet. Old fold lines. Light soiling, minute paper loss along some folds. Very good. In a grey half morocco and cloth clamshell case, gilt, red leather labels. Legal documents regarding the confiscation of the property of Loyalist and New York Attorney General John Tabor Kempe, the first of which is penned and signed by William Livingston, first governor of the state of New Jersey and signer of the Constitution. A reluctant politician, William Livingston nevertheless rose to prominence in colonial New York and New Jersey, in part due to his wealth and family connections. He was the first governor of the state of New Jersey, holding that office from 1776 until his death in 1790. Livingston was extremely popular with his constituents and was fiercely anti-Loyalist. "Livingston came to harbor a deep and visceral hatred of Loyalists, whose numbers and military operations posed a real civil threat in New Jersey. The governor's jaundiced reaction undermined his otherwise deep commitment to due process and his remarkable concern for the social and economic welfare of his constituents. Livingston was by nature and education a man of conservative political leanings, forced into the personally distasteful role of flamboyant revolutionary. Indeed, throughout the war he was a rebel with a price on his head. Exiled New Jersey Loyalists several times tried to arrange his assassination by offering a reward for his murder" - ANB. During this time Livingston was constantly on the move to avoid assassination, bringing him into close contact with his constituents. This sensitized him to their needs in a way few others in his station would know, additionally fuelling his desire for reforms, including the abolition of slavery. "Governor Livingston made a real effort to redistribute Loyalist land by means of a strong pioneering confiscation act, a reform that did not work well in practice, but was intended by the governor to expand New Jersey's social revolution" - ANB. John Tabor Kempe is one of those who lost his lands due to his political leanings. The first leaf is a certification of the document which follows, penned and signed by Livingston. It is embossed with the state seal of New Jersey, and the whole gathering is tied with a red ribbon. The inquisition into Kempe's property took place in 1779, whereupon it was found that: "John Tabor Kempe and Grace his wife...are offenders in manner as is described in an act of the general assembly, intitled 'An act for the forfeiting to and vesting in the state of New Jersey the real estates of certain fugitives and offenders, & for directing the mode of determining & satisfying the lawful debts and demands which may be due from or made against such fugitives & offenders and for other purposes therein mentioned'...in that this John Tabor Kempe, and Grace his wife, did go to the enemy and took refuge with them some time in April in the year [1776] & still remain with them." The second document, listing Kempe's lost goods and property, is titled "Rough estimate of Mr. Kempe's estate & interest lost in consequences of his loyalty." Kempe estimates his losses at an excess of £117,000, primarily in lost lands and estates, totaling over 45,000 acres. An interesting and informative set of documents, showing the high price of loyalty to the British Crown in New Jersey during the American Revolution. ANB (online).

[Three Documents on Shay's Rebellion] Acts and Laws, Passed by the General Court of Massachusetts... on Wednesday the Thirty-first day of May, Anno Domini, 1786... to Wednesday the Twenty-seventh day of September following [with] Acts and Laws... to Wednesday the Thirty-first day of January, 1787 [with] Resolves of the General Court ..

Boston: Printed by Adams and Nourse, 1787. First edition. Quarter tan paper spine over gray paper-covered boards, paper label on front cover. Generally fine copies, old stitching marks at inner margin, first item with foxing on three leaves, and small faded contemporary marginal notation; first leaf of second item with two creases to lower half and one leaf with paper loss at corner just affecting marginal title, final item with a few marginal pin holes and one tiny stain, otherwise very sharp and clear impressions in a fine binding.. [487-545] pp.; [546-627] pp. [87-168] pp. Beginning in 1786, only three years after the American Revolution had ended, an armed rebellion began in Western Massachusetts led by Daniel Shay, a war veteran, and composed not only of farmers but many others from diverse backgrounds who were angry about onerous taxes and imprisonment for debt, as well as cronyism, corruption and rules by an elite. The eastern rebellion was easily contained (in fact Shattuck, its leader was captured just after the time period of the Resolve), but the western insurrection under Shay remained serious enough that the U.S. Congress surreptitiously raised 4000 troops for the defense of the arsenal in Springfield under the guise of needing them to fight a coalition of ten Indian tribes out West (Resolve LXIII, Message of October 27). The courts were forced to close in Western Massachusetts, but the insurrection was eventually put down with thousands arrested. The first two documents (Acts & Laws) contain the major responses to the rebellion: Acts for: Preventing riots; Suspending the Privilege of the Writ of Hapeas Corpus; Acts for: Providing pay for the militia employed by the Gov't in suppressing the Rebellion; Amending an earlier act granting indemnity to offenders and providing for their trials; Describing the disqualifications regarding those who were guilty of treason; Suppression of Tumults and Insurrections; Disqualifying rebels from serving as jurors; Regulating the militia; and more. The Resolves began with an impassioned message delivered by Governor James Bowdoin on September 28, 1786, just two days after Daniel Shay confronted the militia Bowdoin had sent early under the direction of William Shepherd, and the Court was required to adjourn. "What led to the unwarrantable and lawless proceedings of those insurgents will be a necessary subject of serious Inquiry. The investigating the true causes of those proceedings may point out the proper remedy of them in future. But whatever may be the causes, it is impossible they should amount to a sufficient and justifiable reason for them. Every complaint, or grievance, that can be offered, as a reason to palliate them, is, from the nature of the Constitution, redressible by the General Court, the only body, within whose department it is, to redress public grievances. The application, therefore, to all other bodies, and all other modes of redress, are anticonstitutional, & of very dangerous tendency, even when attempted in a peaceable manner: but much more so, when attempted by acts of violence, for preventing the execution of the laws, and the due administration of Justice. These observations are strictly just, where there is a constitutional mode for the redress of grievance: and especially where those in Government, who have the power to redress, annually depend on the people for political existence." Bowdoin's last words were prophetic; he was not reelected, many of the reforms called for by the rebels were enacted, and a more powerful central government was created with the adoption of the Federal Constitution. [Vienna?], no date.

1787. Folio. 8 pp. Very rare official document relating to the "secret alliance" between Joseph II and Catherine the Great, possibly forged in order 'to share with Russia the spoils of the Turkish Empire' (Coxe, Austria III, 519). - As an early attempt at tackling the 'Eastern Question' of the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire, Catherine believed that an alliance with Joseph would render her powerful enough to bring about her so-called 'Greek Project' - "the overthrow of the Ottoman Empire and the establishment of an Orthodox Christian successor state to Byzantium ruled by Catherine's grandson Constantine" (Mayer). While Russia had been plagued by confrontations with Turkey during the 18th century, the alliance guaranteed the reciprocal supply of troops in any Ottoman conflict - in 1787, asked for 12,000 men, Joseph famously mobilized some 200,000. - Joseph II had consistently attempted to maintain rather pacific relations with the Ottomans, in contrast to Catherine: "In late May 1787, as Joseph reluctantly accompanied Catherine II on a tour of the Crimea, he reported that she was dying 'to start up with the Turks again'", but the secret treaty of 1781 certainly contemplated the eventual partition of Ottoman territories. The assistance promised by Joseph in the present document turned out to be instrumental to Catherine's ambitions; indeed, as one scholar notes, "the collapse of the Ottoman war effort and the success of Habsburg armies in 1789 has yet to be adequately explained". - Light creasing and slight fault to lower margin of p .1, otherwise a very good copy. Mayer, "The Price for Austria's Security: Joseph II, the Russian Alliance, and the Ottoman War, 1787-1789", The International History Review Vol. 26, No. 2 (Jun., 2004), pp. 257-299

Sammandrag af Justitiae-Radets Herr Casten [!] Niebuhrs Resa i Levanten och Beskrifning om Arabien. Stockholm, Kongl. Ordens-Tryckeriet, 1787.

1787. 8vo. (24), 455, (23) pp. With 4 engr. plates. Contemp. half calf with gilt title label on gilt spine. Edges sprinkled red. Extremely rare sole edition of this account of the Niebuhr expedition to Arabia in the 1760s. Produced as a cheaper alternative to the hefty 3-volume sets which appeared in German, Danish, French, and other languages, the present work was printed by the Royal press and gives a summary of the journey intended for a popular audience. Swedish interest in the expedition was elicited by the presence of the Swedish botanist and explorer Peter Forsskål in Niebuhr's caravan. After studying Arabic dialects, Forsskål was the first to scientifically describe many plants of the Arabian Peninsula, before dying in Yemen of malaria in 1763. - The plates, modeled after those of the German edition of 1772, depict a Turkish Pilgrim to Mecca; an Arab woman in a hijab, with an inset detail of a burkha; an Arab farm-girl from the 'Coffee Mountains' of southern Arabia; and an Arab nobleman of Yemen. - Binding rather rubbed; blank margin of first few leaves a little toned, otherwise a very good copy, clean and fresh. OCLC shows just 3 copies worldwide: the University of Texas, the Swedish National Library, and the Danish National Library. No copy seen at Anglo-American auction since 1999. OCLC 156793368.         Almeida

London: Published by Prattent, 46 Cloth Fair West Smithfield, & Whitaker, 12 New Street Covent Garden, 1787. Colour-printed stipple. Printed on watermarked laid paper. In good condition with the exception of a tear along the bottom right corner. Section of the right platemark has been repaired where it has cracked. Paper has some surface dirt. Image size:. A pretty colour-printed stipple depicting Almeida, by the London engraver Thomas Prattent. This delicate image by the London printmaker Thomas Prattent recalls the style of the celebrated engraver John Raphael Smith. Prattent, who had premises in Cloth Fair, made a name for himself as an architectural engraver producing many attractive views of London and the surrounding boroughs. This pretty picture represents a deviation from Prattent's usual images and directly recalls the ornate portraits executed by Smith. Like Smith's images, Prattent's "Almeida" is subtly suggestive. An ornately dressed young woman sits alone in the open countryside. Her fashionable attire makes her appear out of place in her rural environment, and yet her contemplative, serene countenance has an alluring effect. The image is accompanied by two lines of poetry by William Shenstone, commemorating her gracefulness and virtue. Benezit, Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs.

An Academy for Grown Horsemen, Containing the Complete Instructions for Walking, Trotting, Cantering, Galloping, Stumbling and Tumbling. London, printed for W. Dickinson, S. Hooper, and Mess. Robinsons, 1787.

1787. Folio (266 x 365 mm). VI, III-XX, 38 pp. With two frontispieces and 21 plates (the frontispiece and 10 out of 11 plates present in two states, both coloured and as sepia mezzotints). (Bound with:) Annals of Horsemanship. Containing Accounts of Accidental Experiments, and Experimental Accidents Both Successful and Unsuccessful [...]. London, for W. Dickinson, S. Hooper, J. Archer, and R. White, 1791. XVII, (1), 81, (1) pp. With 15 stipple-engraved plates. 19th-century red three-quarters morocco with gilt spine. Marbled endpapers. First editions of Gambano's droll classics on horsemanship featuring H. W. Bunbury's humorous caricatures: a luxury copy with the rare hand-coloured plates included with the first work. "Geoffrey Gambado" has sometimes been identified with the illustrator, but is also said to have been Francis Grose, compiler of "A Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue" (cf. Riely, "Horace Walpole and 'the Second Hogarth'", in: ECS 9/1 [1975]). In addition to his works on antiquities, satiric essays, and volumes on non-standard words and meanings, Grose (1731-91) wrote "Rules for Drawing Caricaturas: with an Essay on Comic Painting" (1788), and the frontispiece portrait of "Gambado" in the "Academy" bears an uncanny resemblance to Grose, a "stocky, corpulent figure which Grose himself caricatured" (DNB). - The stipple-engraved plates were designed by H. W. Bunbury (1750-1811), whom "Walpole enthusiastically compared [...] to Hogarth. He was the friend of Goldsmith, Garrick, and Reynolds, and the favourite of the Duke and Duchess of York, to whom in 1787 he was appointed equerry. All this, coupled with the facts that he was seldom, if ever, personal, and wholly abstained from political subjects, greatly aided his popularity with the printsellers and the public of his day, and secured his admission, as an honorary exhibitor, to the walls of the Academy, where between 1780 and 1808 his works frequently appeared [... They] are not without a good deal of grotesque drollery of the rough-and-ready kind in vogue towards the end of the last century - that is to say, drollery depending in a great measure for its laughable qualities upon absurd contrasts, ludicrous distortions, horseplay, and personal misadventure" (DNB). - "The Annals of Horsemanship" were later "published with and generally bound with" the "Academy", though always "with a separate title page" (Huth). The "Academy" seemingly wants fol. B1 of the preliminary matter, but was apparently issued that way: as the ESTC notes, "Possibly deliberately mis-signed in order to support the 'missing' portion of the author's preface - see editor's note". - Some browning and brownstaining; occasional edge tears repaired (including a largish fault to fol. M2, the edges of which are more severely frayed). From the library of the late Robert Lionel Foster, Esq. (British Justice of the Peace, d. 1952; his bookplate on front pastedown). Huth p. 52. Lowndes p. 860. Brunet II, 1474 ("singulier ouvrage"). Graesse III, 22.
