Hassenfratz & Adet.

Paris, (Chardon für) Cuchet, 1787. - Large 8vo. (4), 314 pp. With figural woodcut vignette on t. p., 1 printed and 6 engraved folding plates of tables. Contemp. marbled calf with gold-stamped title to gilt spine. Leading edges gilt. Edges in red. First edition of one of the most important works in the history of modern chemistry. "To persuade a new generation of chemists to join their ranks and to complete what Lavoisier had envisaged since 1773 - a revolution in chemistry - these men brought out a collaborative work, the 'Méthode [.]'. Originally suggested by Guyton de Morveau to eliminate the confused synonymy of chemistry, and prefaced by a memoir of Lavoisier, it emerged as a complete break with the past" (DSB VIII, 80). The result of this collaboration by de Morveau, Lavoisier, Berthollet, de Fourcroy, Laplace, and Monge is the system presented within the present work, which was to form the basis for the nomenclature still used today, the language of modern chemistry. "The work lists 55 known elements in a series of tables, introducing many new terms which have remained in standard use" (Norman Cat., 604). - Spine-ends damaged; lower corner of front cover bumped. Slight worming to front hinge (small defect at top end). Some browning and finger-smudging inside. First engraved plate water-stained. Front pastedown with contemp.         Ponderazioni Sopra la Contrattazione Marittima

1787 - Interesting Treatise on Maritime Law Praised by Joseph Story Targa, Carlo. Ponderazioni Sopra la Contrattazione Marittima. Genoa: Dagli Eredi di Adamo Scionico, 1787. [viii], 259 pp. Quarto (8" x 5-1/2"). Contemporary tree calf, blind rules to boards, lettering piece and gilt ornaments to spine, edges rouged. Light rubbing to extremities with minor wear to corners, a few minor scuffs to boards, hinges cracked. Light toning to text, internally clean. Ex-library. Bookplate to front pastedown. A handsome copy. * An enlarged later edition of an interesting treatise on maritime law, contracts and insurance. The main text is followed by a critical edition of the Rhodian Sea Law (in Greek with a parallel Latin text), which was compiled between 600-800 CE, and the complete text of the Florentine insurance statutes, which were enacted in 1529. Joseph Story held this work in high regard: "We had almost forgotten to speak of Targa, who, in his Reflections on Maritime Contracts, has drawn from the civil and canon law, the Consolato del Mare, the usages of maritime nations, and preceding writers, the most useful learning on all the subjects of maritime law except insurance; and has adapted his work to practice by collecting the forms of the various contracts, with hints for their proper application. He is generally esteemed as an industrious and correct author; but his fame seems lost in the superior blaze of his illustrious countryman.": "Literature of the Maritime Law" (1818) reprinted in The Miscellaneous Writings of Joseph Story, ed. William W. Story 111-112. OCLC locates 4 copies of this edition, 2 in the United States, both in law libraries (University of Michigan, University of Virginia). Not in Kress or Goldsmiths.'         GERANIOLOGIA seu Erodii, Pelargonii, Geranii, Monsoniae et Grieli Historia Iconibus Illustrata

Pierre-François Didot, Paris 1787 - A superb complete set of the original 44 plates of Geraniologia (no title leaf), all very bright and clean without foxing or other marks, they are in their original uncoloured state and printed on wove paper. Because they have never been bound, the edges are all uncut, the sheets measuring approxing 355mm x 535mm. To find a set in such clean condition in untrimmed state is exceptional. A few of the later plates are a little worn/creased to the margins, plate 41 is a little more creased at the top, just affecting the plate impression. The title page is not present in this set but a facsimile has been expertly let into the front panel of the Solander box. This is a superb production, finished in green buckram and inlaid with panels of red morocco to the spine and front board, which are stamped in gilt. The edges are finished in mauve cloth and the box lined with acid-free paper; the plates are protected within a folding card casing. This rare portfolio contains some of Redoute's best early work. L'Heritier took great interest in and helped guide the careers of both Pierre Joseph Redouté and James Sowerby, both important botanical artists. In this present work, six plates are based on paintings by Sowerby, while thirty-one are after Redoute (The other artists involved being Claude Aubriet, Louis Freret, B. Pernotin and S. Taylor). L'Heritier chose to leave the plates uncoloured, because he felt that "if his engravings were coloured, much of the sharpness and precision would be lost. The plates by Sowerby and Redoute are particularly fine, and provide us with an example of the early work of these two botanical illustrators, when they were still under the influence of the great French tradition established by Robert" (An Oak Spring Flora). Due to the outbreak of the French Revolution, the Geraniologia was never finished and was finally published in ca 1792, but the text was never published.         Me?moires philosophiques, historiques, physiques, concernant la de?couverte de l'Ame?rique : ses anciens habitans, leurs m?urs, leurs usages, leur connexion avec les nouveaux habitans, leur religion ancienne & moderne, les produits des

Paris: Chez Buisson, 1787 2 volumes: 576+xv pages; 499+xv pages. Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in 3/4 period leather. Translated from the first German edition (1781) which includes a chapter entitled: "Observations and additions to by Johann Gottlob Theaenus Schneider". Translated with additional notes and reviews by Jean Baptiste Lefebvre Villebrune. First Spanish edition published in 1772 (Madrid). (Sabin 36805) First French edition.Antonio de Ulloa (12 January 1716 ?" 3 July 1795) was a Spanish general, explorer, author, astronomer, colonial administrator and the first Spanish governor of Louisiana. He was born in Seville, the son of an economist. Ulloa entered the navy in 1733. In 1735 he was appointed with fellow Spaniard Jorge Juan a member of the French Geodesic Mission, a scientific expedition which the French Academy of Sciences was sending to Ecuador to measure a degree of meridian arc at the equator, led by Pierre Bouguer. He remained there from 1736 to 1744, during which time the two Spaniards discovered the element platinum. In 1745, having finished their scientific labors, Ulloa and Jorge Juan prepared to return to Spain, agreeing to travel on different ships in order to minimize the danger of losing the important fruits of their labors. The ship upon which Ulloa was traveling was captured by the British, and he was taken as a prisoner to England. In that country, through his scientific attainments, he gained the friendship of the men of science, and was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of London. In a short time, through the influence of the president of this society, he was released and was able to return to Spain. He published an account of the people and the countries they have met (1748), which was translated into English as A Voyage to South America. He became prominent as a scientist and was appointed to serve on various important scientific commissions. He is to be credited with the establishment of the first museum of natural history, the first metallurgical laboratory in Spain, and the observatory of Cadiz. In 1758 he returned to South America as governor of Huancavelica in Peru and the general manager of the quicksilver mines there. He held this position until 1764. He arrived on 5 March 1766 in New Orleans to serve as the first Spanish governor of West Louisiana. The French colonists refused to recognize Spanish rule, and de Ulloa was expelled from Louisiana by a Creole uprising during the Louisiana Rebellion of 1768. For the remainder of his life he served as a naval officer. In 1779 he became lieutenant-general of the naval forces. As a result of his scientific work in Peru, he published (Madrid, 1784) Relación histórica del viaje á la América Meridional, which contains a full, accurate, and clear description of the greater part of South America geographically, and of its inhabitants and natural history. In collaboration with the Jorge Juan mentioned above, he also wrote Noticias secretas de América, giving valuable information regarding the early religious orders in Spanish America.Condition:Sever worming to spines, exterior hinges cracked, point chipped, library stamps to title pages else a good copy of a scarce item.

Housed in a half morocco and cloth folding box, spine gilt. A primary source for information on the history of early California. An outstanding book on early California. Palou was a disciple of Father Junipero Serra (1713-1784) for many years, and his work is still the principal source for the life of the venerable founder of the California missions. "The letters from Father Serra to Father Palou [provide] interesting details on the various Indian tribes and their manners and customs, together with descriptions of the country. This work has been called the most noted of all books relating to California" (Hill). "Both a splendid discourse on the California missions, their foundation and management, and an intimate and sympathetic biography of the little father-present. Better, by long odds, than the bulk of lives of holy men, written by holy men" ( Libros Californianos ). The map shows the locations of nine missions (of an ultimate total of twenty-one) and also the presidios at San Diego, Santa Barbara, Monterey, and San Francisco. "[The map] is of interest here because it seems to be the first on which a boundary line was drawn between Lower and Upper California" (Wheat). The plate is a portrait of Serra. First edition, second issue, with "Mar Pacifico" printed on the map (see Wagner). This is also the issue of the text with "car" instead of "pro" at the end of the index and with the phrase "a expensas de various bienhechores" preceding the imprint on the titlepage. Fremenville was the son of a naval architect. He chose a naval career after hearing a lecture on Captain Cook's voyages. At the age of 15, Freminville joined the navy and traveled to Haiti under General LeClerc. While there he discovered the great ray, native to the bay of Port-au-Prince, which came to bear his name. By the time he retired in the 1830's, Freminville had spent most of his life at sea, traveling from Iceland and Russia to Central and South America to West Africa and the Antilles, and drawing specimens of exotic species. He enjoyed much fame in his own day as an antiquary and writer of travel accounts, but he died having produced only one book on natural history subjects, Considerations Generales sur les Moeurs et les Habitudes des Serpens (1842). The drawings that Freminville left behind were intended for a half-dozen other related works on butterflies, fish, mollusks, snakes, and other reptiles, but these books remained unrealized.

The text finishes with "Détails du mouvement" of marine chronometers number "28" and letter "A" that were used during the survey. The maps and plates are as follow: 1) "Carte réduite de l'Isle de St.Domingue . d'après les observations faites sur la Corvette Vautour en 1784 et 1785."         Gott. Einige Gespræche, (God. Some Conversations).

Karl Wilhelm Ettinger, Gotha 1787 - TP + [III]-VIII + [1]-252, small Octavo. "In opposition to the emphatic dualism, which Kant affirms between the empirical material and the a priori form of thought, Herder puts forward the profounder idea of an essential unity and a gradual development in nature and mind. His cosmical philosophy culminates in a poetic Spinozism, filled with the idea of the personality of the divine spirit and of immortality (conceived as a metempsychosis - a form of Spinozism, therefore, similar to that exemplified in those works of Spinoza's which preceded the Ethics [although this form, historically, was unknown in Herder's time], and less removed from the doctrine of Bruno). This philosophy he developed connectedely in the work entitled "God, Dialogues Concerning Spinoza's System (1787)." Ueberweg II, p. 201 (giving the correct date for the first edition but using the expanded title that only appeared in the second edition of 1800.) Contemporary rubbed paste boards. Paper label to spine with contemporary brown k lettering. Some browning and foxing but, overall, a lovely copy. PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. [Attributes: First Edition]
