THE VISION OF COLUMBUS; A POEM IN NINE BOOKS

Hartford: Printed by Hudson and Goodwin, for the Author,. 1787. Octavo, pp. [i-vii] viii-xxi [xxii] [23-25] 26-258 [259-262; 265-272: "subscribers names"] [note: this is one of the copies with blank leaf (Kk4) excised],. eighteenth-century full leather, spine panel ruled in gold, red leather spine label ruled and titled in gold, all edges stained light yellow.. Several abrasions to the surface of the leather, more so to rear. panel, still a very pleasing copy with a fine interior in an. attractive contemporary binding. (#107033). First edition. Barlow's first substantial work. The secularization of eighteenth-century American millennial expectations, not surprisingly, "became associated as much with patriotic pride as with God's great plan for the salvation of mankind. The future glory of God's Kingdom on earth gave way in emphasis to the future glory of America; that the Millennium would appear seemed not so important as that it would appear in America. Utilizing some of the techniques of fiction -- the framework of the vision or dream, for example, or a hint of elementary characterization -- and dwelling on the extrapolative details of the imagined Millennium, a number of writers (most of them poets and most of these among the Connecticut Wits) set out to sing the praises of their native land; in the process they rendered some of the first substantial images of Utopia Americana. Some of these works, indeed, are entirely devoted to portraying America as Holy Eutopia - - Timothy Dwight's AMERICA: OR, A POEM ON THE SETTLEMENT OF THE BRITISH COLONIES (circa 1771, circa 1781), David Humphreys's A POEM ON THE FUTURE GLORY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA (1804), and the anonymous short prose work THE GOLDEN AGE (1785); others have different main themes but still devote substantial time to linking America to the advent of the Millennium -- Part VII of Timothy Dwight's GREENFIELD HILL (1794) and Book VIII of Joel Barlow's THE VISION OF COLUMBUS (1787)." - Nydahl, Joel, "From Millennium to Utopia Americana," Roemer, Kenneth, ed., America as Utopia, p. 249. "In common with most of his contemporaries, Barlow lacked any marked poetic talent (though he did not hesitate to rank himself with Virgil), yet an occasional line of his possesses more than ordinary merit. He was one of the true prophets of Nationalism, as may be seen in his VISION OF COLUMBUS, later expanded into THE COLUMBIAD (1807)." - Fullerton, Selective Bibliography of American Literature 1775-1900, p. 19. Barlow's vast epic of America, a poem in excess of 5000 lines arranged in nine books, was written over "a period of eight years, from 1779 to 1787, in leisure stolen from teaching, preaching, publishing, and military service. He had polished and revised, secure in his cheerful egotism that it would be well received. Strangely enough, it was; despite obvious debts to Milton, and stretches of execrable verse, THE VISION OF COLUMBUS won Barlow fame. His contemporaries delighted in the grandiose couplets on the discovery, settlement, and majestic future of America." - DAB. BAL 865. Evans 20220.

These particular drawings were rendered on both sides of the paper, and are surrounded by a gold-leaf border. They are framed in museum quality gold-leaf frames with UV plexiglass on both sides, so that you can view the illustration on either side of the paper. These fine studies, depicting botanicals of the Alps, were made for Thomas Martyn (1735-1825), Professor of Botany at Cambridge and author of "Flora Rustica " accompanied by 144 hand-colored copper-engraved plates by F. P. Nodder (1792-94), whom De Gillaboz met in 1787. Many well-known botanical artists of the time, such as Dr. Robert John Thornton, were inspired by Martyn's work in botany.

- Woodcut royal arms of Portugal on title-pages (from two different cuts). Woodcut initial letter and headpiece on p. 3 of both parts. 56; 45 pp., (1 l. with sonnet). 2 volumes. 4°, contemporary stitching (final gathering of first part becoming loose). Title-page of second part with light to moderate waterstaining at inner margin, continuing to a much lesser degree in following leaves. Uncut and unopened. Overall very good to fine copies. 2 volumes. ---- FIRST and ONLY EDITION of these salvos in a lengthy literary battle that began with the publication of the three-volume @O Filosofo Solitario, Lisbon 1786-87. The @Filosofo solitario was in large part a translation of @Philosophie de la nature, 1769, by J.B.C. Isoard Delisle (called "Delisle de Sales"). Like many contemporary French works, Delisle's was not widely circulated in Portugal due to the heavy hand of the censors. Probably for that reason, not only @O Filosofo Solitario but all the pamphlets that soon appeared attacking and defending it were published anonymously. In the first part the author points out that everything written about the anatomy of man in @O Filosofo Solitario is incorrect. In the @Reposta segunda the author attacks two assertions of the @Filosofo: that solitude is better than society and that medicine is futile--an idea that would have particularly enraged Mello Franco, given his profession. He also quotes at length from de Sales, to prove that the @Filosofo is a plagiarist. The @Reposta and @Reposta segunda appeared just after Mello Franco's @Reino da estupidez began circulating in manuscript, and shortly before his @Tratado da educação fysica dos meninos appeared in 1790.Mello Franco (1757-1823), a native of Minas Gerais, practiced medicine in Lisbon until 1817, when he returned to Brazil. He was frequently in trouble with the authorities for his liberal writings and associations and spent several years imprisoned by the Inquisition. His @Tratado da educação fysica dos meninos, Lisbon 1790, is the first book on pediatrics by a Brazilian. @Reino da estupidez, a satirical poem aimed at the professors of Coimbra, was circulating anonymously in manuscript as early as 1785 (the first printed version was not until 1818), and caused an enormous scandal.---- Borba de Moraes (1983) I, 320; @Período colonial pp. 138-40.         A HISTORY OF THE CAMPAIGNS OF 1780 AND 1781, IN THE SOUTHERN PROVINCES OF NORTH AMERICA.

London. 1787. - vii,[1],518pp. (including errata) plus [2]pp. of publisher's ads, one folding map with routes marked by hand in color, and four folding plans, with positions and troop movements marked by hand in colors. Modern brown morocco, gilt. Contemporary ownership inscription on titlepage. Map with a closed tear in gutter margin, repaired on verso with older paper, likely at an early date. Very minor soiling or foxing, one leaf (p.261) with a small closed tear in margin. Very good. A standard work concerning the southern campaigns of the American Revolution. Tarleton, the commander of a Tory cavalry unit, the British Legion, served in America from May 1776 through the siege of Yorktown. He was infamous for his brutal tactics and hard-riding attacks. His narrative is one of the principal British accounts of the Revolution, notable for his use of original documents, a number of which are included as notes following the relevant chapters. The handsome maps and plans include "The Marches of Lord Cornwallis in the Southern Provinces." showing the Carolinas, Maryland, Virginia, and Delaware (with routes traced by hand in color); and plans of the siege of Charlestown, the battles of Camden and Guildford, and the siege of Yorktown.         Select Views in India, drawn on the spot, in the years 1780, 1781, 1782, and 1783, and executed in aqua tinta, by William Hodges

printed for the author, and sold by J. Edwards, London 1787 - Period calf, covers with a gilt Greek key scroll border, expertly rebacked to style, flat spine in eight compartments, original black morocco lettering piece in the second compartment, the others with a repeat decoration in gilt, marbled endpapers Provenance: Ozias Humphry (1742-1810, presentation inscription signed by Hodges on the title dated November 8, 1788) Author's presentation copy and a very rare issue of Hodges' pioneering work on the architectural and picturesque wonders of India, with the plates being proof impressions before letters printed on India paper. Born in London the son of a blacksmith, William Hodges was employed as an errand-boy in Shipley's drawing school, where in his spare time he learned to draw. The landscape painter Richard Wilson (1714-1782) noticed him and took him on as his assistant and pupil, and by 1766 Hodges was exhibiting in his own right. In 1772, through the interest of Lord Palmerston (1739-1802) a member of the board of Admiralty, he was appointed as draughtsman to Captain James Cook's second expedition to the South Seas. He returned in 1775 and was employed by the Admiralty in working up his drawings of the expedition and in supervising the engraving of the plates for Cook's published account of the expedition. He exhibited a number of pictures inspired by the voyage at the Royal Academy in London in 1776 and 1777. Life in London must have seemed quite restrained after his South Sea experiences, and after ending his contract with the Admiralty and following the death of his wife, he left for India in 1778. "But the first year in India was disappointing. Hodges health was poor and the Second Mysore War . was in progress . he was confined to Madras and its immediate environs. On moving to Calcutta in February 1781, however, he was to travel far more widely through the generosity and patronage of the Governor-General Warren Hastings . During 1781 Hodges made two tours up-country with him during which he saw the ruins of many Muslim palaces, tombs and mosques. The next year he found a patron in Augustus Cleveland, a liberal administrator stationed at Bhagalpur in Bihar. Touring with him Hodges saw a very different India - the forested tracts inhabited by an aboriginal people, the Paharias. During 1783 he made a long expedition up-country to join Major Brown who was heading a diplomatic embassy to the Mughal Emperor. Hodges was now able to see the great Mughal monuments at Agra and Sikandra. He returned through Central India to Calcutta via Lucknow and left India in November 1783." ( India Observed ). On his return to London, he exhibited 25 oil paintings of India at the Royal Academy, along with a selection of his aquatints. "All of these works gave a completely new and direct vision of India translated into an eighteenth century painter's composition. His views of the countryside with its great rivers and forests had little in common with the popular picture of India gained from old engravings in the travellers' accounts. His architectural subjects depicted many little-known Muslim tombs and mosques, Hindu temples, forts and palaces in Upper India."( India Observed ). Beyond the never-before-seen subject matter of the prints, Hodges proto-impressionistic style is worthy of particular note. "He conveyed the towering bulk of many Indian monuments by exaggerated proportions and foreshortened perspective. The countryside is shown rough with stunted scrub and windswept trees; paint is vigorously applied . Here was a new and fresh approach to the Indian scene, viewing it in the 'picturesque' taste and presenting novel material, especially architecture, to the British public in a new manner" ( India Observed ). The appearance of this work caused a sensation, as nothing of the scenery of India on this scale had been seen before. The useful text, though generally brief, gives a history of each site, together with an account of contemporary events in which the site had been involved. Fascinating work on the trial of Dominican Froilan de Llanos, who was the official confessor of Charles II of Spain. Fray Froylan Diaz de Llanos was convinced that the king's poor health was a result of a spell cast on him. In 1698-1699, under the Head Inquisitor, Juan Tomas de Rocaberti's supervision, he performed a series of exorcisms over the king, after which he stated that Charles II was indeed under the influence of evil forces, for which various persons from the royal court were responsible, among others Queen Maria Anna of Neuburg. When the queen found out about the accusations against her, Froylan Diaz de Llanos was dismissed from the post of royal confessor and transferred to the diocese of the city of Avila and subsequently arrested by the Tribunal of the Inquisition on charges of heresy. Some age wear on binding with rubbing on spine and along edges. Minor and sporadic foxing throughout. Binding in overall good- to good, interior in very good condition.         Orpheus und Euridice eine Oper. [Subtitle]: Clavierauszug der Partitur. herausgegeben von C.F. Cramer

bey dem Herausgeber und in Hamburg in Commission bey Herrn Hofmann, Kiel 1787 - First Edition. BUC p. 725. RISM N189. A Singspiel in three acts to a libretto by Charlotte Dorothea Biehl after Ranieri de' Calzabigi, Orpheus und Euridice was first performed in Copenhagen at the Royal Opera on January 31, 1786 to a libretto by C.D. Biehl after R. Calzabigi. "In 1785–6 [Naumann] was guest opera composer and conductor in Copenhagen, where he also reformed the Hofkapelle and improved the organization of the court opera. For Copenhagen he composed the tuneful and charming Danish opera Orpheus og Eurydike (1786)."Orpheus was intended to test Naumann’s abilities before King Christian VII offered him an official appointment at the Danish court. The music was praised for its colourful harmonies and sensitive orchestration; Naumann uses Gluckian accompanied recitative throughout, while the choruses and arias range from expressive through-composed scenes to short, perfunctory lied forms. The orchestra consisted of 40 players at the première and included trombones, for which the theatre had to be enlarged. Orpheus remained on the stage in Copenhagen until December 1791, and, in addition to a vocal score in German translation (Hamburg, 1787), excerpts appeared in the catalogues of Dresden publishers until 1800.".He was the most important personality in the music history of Dresden between Hasse and Weber, as well as one of the most esteemed musicians in Europe in the late 18th century and one of the last German composers to study in Italy." Dieter Härtwig and Laurie H. Ongley in Grove online Oblong folio. Early speckled tan paper boards. Old calf, rebacked. Fine. [with:] ACTS OF ASSEMBLY, PASSED IN THE ISLAND OF JAMAICA, FROM THE YEAR 1784 TO THE YEAR 1788 INCLUSIVE. Kingston: Printed by Alexander Aikman, 1789. xvi,300,iv,[4],23pp. Quarto. Old calf, rebacked. Near fine. All together, an extraordinary collection of 18th-century Jamaican printing, combining six separate imprints (one of them consisting of two volumes) in three bound volumes, all printed between 1786 and 1789 by two different printers in Kingston, Jamaica. The texts retrospectively cover the Acts of the Assembly from its beginning in 1681, up to date with the last printing in 1788. Also included are two separate publications containing abridgements of the various acts, and a further separate publication combining all of the slave statutes in one place. As anyone who has sought them knows well, all 18th-century Caribbean imprints are rare, most extremely so, and these laws are no exception. Furthermore, most Caribbean printing is fairly slight, not substantial volumes such as these. Printing began in Jamaica in 1718. It was the first British colony south of Maryland to have a printing press, and except for several items printed in Havana by a press briefly established there, this was the first press in the Caribbean; however, only a handful of fugitive pieces survive from the 1770s. In that period the economic importance of Jamaica was supplemented by an influx of Loyalists, including the printer, Alexander Aikman, who seems to have invigorated the cultural and publishing life of the colony, while the British government liberalized its colonial policy to avoid a repetition of the problems of the American Revolution. In that climate, these retrospective and current laws of the local colonial government were printed. Of all early Caribbean printing, that of Jamaica is best documented through the early and thorough work of Frank Cundall. His bibliographies illustrate both the rich variety of material printed on Jamaica, and its rarity. Following are the NUC locations and citations of the laws offered herein: ACTS OF ASSEMBLY, 1681-1769. Kingston, 1787. Not in the NUC. CUNDALL, p.52. ABRIDGEMENT OF LAWS. Kingston, 1787. Not in the NUC or Cundall. LAWS RESPECTING SLAVES. Kingston, 1787. Not in the NUC or Cundall. ACTS OF ASSEMBLY, 1770-83. Kingston, 1786. The NUC locates DLC, MH, RPJCB, MChB, NN. CUNDALL, p.52. SABIN 35617. ABRIDGEMENT OF LAWS. Kingston, 1786. The NUC locates NN. Not in Cundall. SABIN 35617. ACTS OF ASSEMBLY, 1784-88. Kingston, 1789. The NUC locates DLC, RPJCB. CUNDALL, p.53. In all, a remarkable assemblage of Caribbean printing.

        Almeida

London: Published by Prattent, 46 Cloth Fair West Smithfield, & Whitaker, 12 New Street Covent Garden, 1787. A pretty colour-printed stipple depicting Almeida, by the London engraver Thomas Prattent. This delicate image by the London printmaker Thomas Prattent recalls the style of the celebrated engraver John Raphael Smith. Prattent, who had premises in Cloth Fair, made a name for himself as an architectural engraver producing many attractive views of London and the surrounding boroughs. This pretty picture represents a deviation from Prattent's usual images and directly recalls the ornate portraits executed by Smith. Like Smith's images, Prattent's "Almeida" is subtly suggestive. An ornately dressed young woman sits alone in the open countryside. Her fashionable attire makes her appear out of place in her rural environment, and yet her contemplative, serene countenance has an alluring effect. The image is accompanied by two lines of poetry by William Shenstone, commemorating her gracefulness and virtue. Benezit, Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs. Colour-printed stipple. Printed on watermarked laid paper. In good condition with the exception of a tear along the bottom right corner. Section of the right platemark has been repaired where it has cracked. Paper has some surface dirt. Image size:.
