The History of New Holland, from its First Discovery in 1616, to the Present Time . With a particular account of its produce and inhabitants; and a description of Botany Bay: also, a list of the Naval, Marine, Military and Civil Establishment

London: John Stockdale, 1787. Octavo, with two folding handcoloured maps; a very good copy aside from a little preliminary foxing and offsetting of the maps, bound in contemporary marbled boards (rebacked retaining original crimson label) from the Westport House library with Browne family armorial bookplate. First Fleet sails for New South Wales. Published on the eve of the departure of the First Fleet for New South Wales, this sometimes neglected publication was the most widely read early descriptions of Australia. It is 'an extremely interesting work and an essential inclusion in all comprehensive collections' (Davidson). The anonymous compiler discusses the imminent departure and lists the numbers and equipment of the fleet as well as the principal officers, and there is also material in both preface and text about transportation, as well as an 'Introductory Discourse' on the subject by William Eden which has often led to the misattribution of the whole book to him. The 'Eden', as it is often called, is written 'to present at one view a connected description of the whole country of New Holland'. The book is clearly aimed at a public eager for information on the new colonial venture, and for details of Botany Bay itself, which is here described at length. This is the form in which many of the participants in the First Fleet must have absorbed what little information existed about conditions in Australia. The first of two maps depicts the continent with an inset of Botany Bay, while the second shows the 'Passage from England to Botany Bay in New Holland 1787', showing clearly the anticipated route of the First Fleet. This is the second edition, following closely the first edition published the same year.

Contemporary calf, expertly rebacked with gilt compartments and leather labels; covers rubbed, some light foxing and offsetting. First English edition. "Clavigero was a native of Vera Cruz (born 1731, died at Bologna, 1787), a Jesuit and a thorough antiquarian, who spent thirty years of active research into the archaeology and antiquities of Mexico. His book, published originally in Italian, is a mine of precious historical documents, and contains valuable lists of others in the Mendoza, the Vatican, and the Boturini collections. All the other books that have been elaborated since on the same subject, instead of superseding Clavigero's, have tended rather to magnify its importance." - Stevens.

Nikolai.

bey Johann Baptist Strobl, München, 1787 - Mit gestochener Titelvignette. 200 S., 4 Bll. Jacobi, Hamann u.a. Zustimmung. A Short Review of the Political State of Great-Britain

London: J. Debrett, 1787. Octavo; a little light spotting but a very nice copy in old half roan. An ironic (and sometimes biting) commentary on the political state of Britain by Sir Nathaniel Wraxall, including a savage attack on Lord Sydney and the First Fleet set for Botany Bay. Wraxall was a contemporary of Townshend in parliament, and the two men locked horns on a number of issues including the contentious scheme for a penal colony in New South Wales. This edition, the seventh "with additions", as well as the sixth edition of the same year, are the only two versions to contain the long passage on pages 77-83, which is in fact one of the earliest printed references to transportation to Botany Bay. Overall, Wraxall is scathing in his opinion of sending felons to the 'extreme verge of Nature' and likens the scheme to the fabled land of Lilliput by Swift. Lord Sydney comes under heavy fire; indeed Wraxall condemns him as downright incompetent in handling the most basic issues. Regarding the departure of the First Fleet, he writes 'was it not permitted to consult either reason, or naval experience, or humanity, in the time, chosen for their embarkation? Must the month of February be selected from the twelve, for the season of their departure? Does Lord Sydney recollect the fatal issue of Anson's, and of Pizarro's squadrons…If Lord Anson's experience and admonitions were insufficient: if Cook's more recent information were vain, even Robinson Crusoe would have taught him better.' Sydney's reputation as an able politician who became an insipid peer derives, to some extent, from the pithy appraisal that Wraxall included in his memoirs - that 'Tommy Townshend displayed very considerable talents. Lord Sydney, when removed to the Upper House of Parliament, seemed to have sunk into an ordinary man'. 'What can be said is that Sydney was perhaps mistaken in accepting a peerage and thus losing much of the influence that came from being a Commons man. He had been appointed by Rockingham - and retained by Shelburne and Pitt - for his debating skills, which were notable. His administrative skills, once in high office, were not so readily apparent…' (DNB).

L'an deux mille quatre cent quarante.

s.n.,, Senza luogo, 1787 - Tre volumi di cm. 19,5, pp. (4) viii- 251 (3); (4) 241 (3); (4) 203 (3). Con tre belle tavole all'antiporta di ciascun volume incise in rame. Solida legatura d'inizio '800 in mezza pelle con piccole punte, dorsi lisci con filetti in oro e titoli su tasselli. Esemplare marginoso e genuino, ben conservato. Celebrato dalle maggiori bibliografie. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Oeuvres badines [12 Volumes]

Visse 1787 - Amsterdam and Paris, 1787. 12 volumes. 8vo, 3/4 brown leather, spine gilt in six compartments. Half-titles, 1 engraved portrait by Delauney jeune after Cochin, 26 engraved plates, head and tail pieces. A near fine set with some scattered rubbing and foxing and a few margins stained. He encouraged artists whose reputations were still in the making, and befriended the connoisseur and collector of prints and drawings Pierre-Jean Mariette when Mariette was only twenty-two, but his patronage was somewhat capricious. Diderot expressed this fact in an epigram in his Salon of 1765: "La mort nous a délivré du plus cruel des amateurs."[1] Caylus had quite another side to his character. He had a thorough acquaintance with the gayest and most disreputable sides of Parisian life, and left a number of more or less witty stories dealing with it. These were collected (Amsterdam, 1787) as his ?uvres badines completes. A lovely complete set, finely bound. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Carl Gustaf Tornqvist was a Swedish naval officer who served in the French navy during the American struggle for independence. The French expedition, which was lead by François de Grasse, played an important role in the battle of Yorktown, where the British and the American-French armies were gathered in the end of 1781. After a joint attack by Washington, Rochambeau, Lafayette and from Grasse's fleet, the British commander Charles Cornwallis was forced to surrender. A French translation was published in 1936 and an English in 1942. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

TRAVELS THROUGH SYRIA AND EGYPT, in the Years 1783, 1784, and 1785

      C. G. J. and J. Robinson, London 1787 - 8vo, Translated from the original French. Pagination: volume I, pp. viii, 418; volume II, pp. iv, 500, index, errata page. Constantin Francois Chasseboeuf, the Comte de Volney (1757-1820) was the son of a prosperous lawyer who, through the good fortune of the receipt of an inheritance in 1781, was able to set out on an ambitious tour of Syria and Egypt. After a year spent in preparations, he departed France with a knapsack on his back, a rifle on his shoulder, and 6,000 livres sewn into a money belt. He then spent the next four years steeping himself in the culture and history of the regions through which he passed. The results of this trip were published in 1787 as "Voyage en Egypt et en Syrie" (our offering being the first English edition of that title). Volney was elected to the Estates General of France in 1789. In 1791 he published his other famous work, "Les Ruines, or Meditation sur les Revolutions des Empires", which was translated into English and published the following year (1702). In his lifetime, and during the first half of the 19th century, Volney's reputation as a "free thinker" was at its peak, although it is now overshadowed by that of Chateuabriand, Voltaire and Thomas Paine. Our offering contains the folding map of Syria (partially repaired) in volume I and three folding plates in volume II; all engraved on copper. The present state of the binding is very rough, although the boards are present (and barely attached), and there is occasional foxing to the contents. Small loss to bottom corner of pp. 187/188. Altogether, this set is an excellent candidate for restoration of the binding, and has been priced accordingly. Complete 2 volume set bound in half leather over marbled boards [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Memoire Sur La Nutrition [-Second Memoire Sur La Nutrition. Supplement Au Memoire Francois Sur La Nutrition]

Chez Jean Martel Aine, Imprimeur Ordinaire. 1787-9, Montpelier - Two volumes. xii, 211, [5]. viii, 155, [1], 118pp, [2]. Uniformly bound in contemporary speckled calf backed boards, spines richly gilt, with contrasting morocco lettering-pieces. A fine set, but for a handful of minute wormholes, with volumes numbers incorrectly transposed. Internally imacculate, but for very occasional marginal paper flaws. Jean Charles Marguerite Guillaume de Grimaud (1750-89), Professor of Medicine at Montpellier. Composed in response to a prize question posed by the St. Petersburg Imperial Academy of Sciences, Memoire Sur La Nutrition examines in some detail the effects of nutrition on the human body, whilst the Second Memoire completes the work by surveying the literature and development of the subject. Avowedly Vitalist, the work is framed by the concept that the human physiology is divided into 'exterior' and 'interior' functions. The former, such as the movement of muscles, was governed by mechanical laws as were objects in the physical world, the latter, in which category is included digestion, is described as more visceral and metaphysical in nature.         A Practical and Explanatory Commentary on the Holy Bible: Taking the whole in one point of view, from the creation to the end of the world.

Printed for R. Faulder 1787 - errata leaf discarded(?), ownership inscription of William Banger to title, some staining and browning, small wormhole in margin of last 3 leaves, pp. [ii], 266, 4to, modern quarter calf with marbled boards, good An unusually scarce biblical commentary: ESTC lists just the British Library and the Founders Library at Lampeter holding copies, while Worldcat adds two Scottish locations (Edinburgh & National Library) and three American (Kings College CA, Iliff, and Duke). One listing gives a pagination omitting the title but including an errata leaf at the end; the others include the title but omit the errata. The author (whose forename appears to be unknown) seeks to elucidate how the Scriptures foretell the coming of Christ, so that the whole Bible demonstrates a unity of design. The English Review concluded that ‘the piety and good intentions of the author are abundantly conspicuous’, but the Critical Review found it lacking in ‘critical accuracy’; one of Yonge’s more outlandish claims is that after the Tower of Babel God divided the earth, and ‘the inhabitants the one from the other. This clears up the difficulty of the first peopling of America, that part of land that was torn off from the main land’ (p. 17). (ESTC T123449)

AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED. Addressed to Sir George Yonge, Secretary of War. Recommending an Appointment to the Company of Invalids.

Great George Street, Westminster: 3 May 1787. - 8vo. 2pp + docket. A few folds. Fine. Murray writes to Yonge asking that a Captain Gilbert be appointed to the Company of Invalids, recently vacated by the death of a Captain Forbes. General James Murray (1721-94) was a career soldier who saw considerable active service during his lifetime. Murray joined the army as a cadet in 1736, and served in different regiments in the West Indies, Holland, France and Belgium until the outbreak of the Seven Years' War. In 1757, he was with the 15th Regiment participating in the attempt to take Rochefort, France. Murray served as brigadier under Major-General Wolfe at the siege of Louisbourg in 1758, and was in command of the left wing of the battle line on the Plains of Abraham at Quebec City in 1759. Wolfe held him in high regard, commending his "infinite spirit" and "great services" during the Louisbourg campaign, and personally selected Murray as the junior brigadier at the siege of Quebec. Upon the defeat of Quebec, and Brigadier George Townshend's return to England in October 1759, Murray was left in charge of the British forces, and was appointed Military Governor of the town and dependencies of Quebec. Drawing on his extensive experience in similar situations, he anticipated an attack from renewed French forces. Upon hearing of the arrival of French troops in April of 1760, Murray led his small contingent of troops in a surprise attack, but suffered heavy losses (during what later became known as the "Battle of Saint-Foy"), and was forced back into the city under siege. The arrival of a relief force in May was sufficient to cause the French to withdraw, and allowed Murray with his army of 2,500 to advance up the St. Lawrence River and converge with the mobilized forces under General Jeffrey Amherst to take Montreal, and seal the defeat of New France. In 1764, Murray became the first Civil Governor of the Province of Quebec, and was sympathetic to the French-Canadians on many fronts, including the continuance of their French civil law. British settler dissatisfaction led to his recall in 1766: he returned to England and resumed his military career. In 1772, he was promoted to Lieutenant-General, and by 1783 was awarded full General status. The letter was written by Murray to Sir George Yonge (1731-1812), British Secretary of War, and the namesake of Toronto's famous Yonge Street, named in his honour in 1793 by John Graves Simcoe.         Sonnets, and Odes Translated from th Italian of Petrarch; with original Text, and an Account of his Life.

London: Printed for T. Davies. 1787 - FIRST AND ONLY EDITION of this translation. 8vo, 187 x 113 mms., pp. [iv], v - xxiii [xxiv blank], 105 [106 blank, 107 drop-title, 108 - 111 contents, 112 blank], cypher ownership initials with animal figure on recto of blank leaf before half-title, contemporary calf, spine ornately gilt to a floral motif, black leather label, gilt border on covers; closed tear in front free end-paper, earlier ownership bookplate on front paste-down end-paper damaged, spine slightly dried, joints slightly rubbed, but a very good copy. Francesco Petrarca (1304 – 1374) is often called the "Father of Humanism," but readers are more likely to remember that he gave up his vocation as a priest when he was attracted by the sight "Laura" in 1327 in the church of Sainte-Claire d'Avignon. He composed some 366 poems, Il Canzoniere, thirty of which are here translated into English, along with three odes. In Petrarch's Canzoniere 164: An Anthology of English Translations with a New Version (1996), J. G. Nichols includes one of the translations in this volume, and suggests that the translator might be the physician and classical scholar John Nott (1751 - 1825), and the BL listing names Nott as the translator. Alas for any high hopes that the author might have had for his translation: the anonymous reviewer in the Monthly Review (1778) was not sympathetic: "To translate Petrarch is a task for the first poetical abilities, supported by the truest and most delicate judgement; but it is a task of the forbidding kind. Interwoven with the finest poetical imagery and sentiment, there are so many trifling conceits, that the labour of selection and exclusion would be at once tedious and difficult. The little that this author has done towards translating him, is done badly, and what he calls Some Account of the Author's life, would disgrace the pen of an apothecary's apprentice" (page 161). Perhaps the last two words are an oblique confirmation of Nott's identity. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A Short Review of the Political State of Great-Britain.

      J. Debrett, London 1787 - Octavo; a little light spotting but a very nice copy in old half roan. Does Lord Sydney recollect the fatal issue of Anson's, and of Pizarro's squadrons? If Lord Anson's experience and admonitions were insufficient: if Cook's more recent information were vain, even Robinson Crusoe would have taught him better.' Sydney's reputation as an able politician who became an insipid peer derives, to some extent, from the pithy appraisal that Wraxall included in his memoirs - that 'Tommy Townshend displayed very considerable talents. His administrative skills, once in high office, were not so readily apparent?'         NAVIGATION IN THE CARIBBEAN]. [Early Manuscript Report on the Navigation in the Caribbean, in Particular near Isabela, Aguada Bay, Mona Island (Puerto Rico), and Saona Island (Dominican Republic)].

1787 - 1787 (entry on the Mona Island is dated "13 June, 1787"). Folio (ca. 32x20 cm). 4 pp. Brown ink on watermarked laid paper. Manuscript is written in a very legible hand; paper aged and lightly-stained, with two neat stab holes in the margins, otherwise a very good manuscript. Apparently compiled for the use of the British mariners sailing in the Caribbean, the manuscript gives a detailed and captivating account of navigation near the coasts of Puerto Rico and Hispaniola. There are complete descriptions of the waters of Aguada Bay and Mona Island, and incomplete texts regarding Isabela (Puerto Rico) and Saona Island (Dominican Republic). The manuscript derives from the family archives of Captain George Anthony Tonyn and his nephew, Admiral Charles William Paterson (1756-1841). The manuscript is written with particular reference to navigation and thoroughly marks distances, geographical coordinates of the islands, bays et al., points of good anchoring sites, sea depths and currents, as well as all sorts of supplies available on shore. Thus the note on Aguada Bay starts: 'An open Bay and deep, requires no particular directions, coming from the North and Eastwd. You may round the North point at 1 Miles distance and keep as near the North Shore as you please, you do not get Soundings till you are within a Mile of the Town in 40 faths.' About the provisions on Mona Island: "There are abundance of Wild Bullocks, which the Turtlers who come here occasionally hunt with dogs and shoot, also abundance of Goats which they hunt and shoot in the same manner. Very good line fishing, but no place sits to haul the seine". "Aguada is a municipality of Puerto Rico, located in the western coastal valley region bordering the Atlantic Ocean, west of Rincón, Aguadilla and Moca; and north of Anasco. Mona is the third largest island of the archipelago of Puerto Rico, after the main island of Puerto Rico and Vieques. Saona Island is located a short distance from the mainland on the south-east tip of the Dominican Republic, near La Altagracia Province" (Wikipedia).

Vienna: Jean Jacobe, 1787. Mezzotint engraving 700 x 990 mm; a fine impression; some wear or tears at blank margins, in very good condition. Bougainville, Casanova and the Prince of Nassau. A rare and very surprising pictorial image of the Bougainville expedition: we have never seen the image before and can find no record of it. Published in Vienna, it is based on a very large painting by Francesco Casanova in the collection of Empress Catherine the Great of Russia as the caption explains ("{i actuellement dans la Gallerie de S.M. l'Imperatrice de la Russie, il a dix pieds de large, sur huit et demi d'haut}"). Francesco Casanova (his older brother was much more famous, but not for painting) trained under Francesco Guardi in Venice, worked in Paris from 1751, becoming a member of the Academy in 1763, and exhibiting at the Salon until 1783 when he moved to Vienna. Interestingly for the history of voyage art, Philip James de Loutherbourg who painted numerous Cook-related scenes and designed a number of the theatrical pieces commemorating Cook was his pupil for a time. This very striking mezzotint depicts an exciting South American scene from Louis Antoine Bougainville's circumnavigation. It shows the dashing Prince of Nassau-Siegen firing from horseback at a jaguar. Several dogs circle the large cat as two others join the fight on horseback. Could the second French horseman be Bougainville? The expedition's ship the {i Boudeuse} is seen to the right of the image. It has been plausibly suggested that the location is the coast of Argentina, where the expedition made landfall before heading for the Pacific. To some extent the prince of Nassau and his presence on the Bougainville expedition represented the French equivalent to Joseph Banks's involvement with Cook's {i Endeavour} voyage. Like Banks the prince cut a dashing figure, was extremely upper-crust, was young, had a retinue of sorts, and an interest in natural sciences. Only performance anxiety at its public nature prevented him having a lot of sex in Tahiti: whether Banks did or didn't all the humorists played this aspect up no end. When the expedition returned to Paris, Bougainville and the prince headed off to Versailles to make their reports accompanied by Aoutourou the young Tahitian who was to some extent under Nassau's wing much as Omai was under Banks's.
