Splendida, fondamentale opera illustrata. 2600 gr.         Unkenneling the Fox-Hounds. L'acher la Meute

Published by Robt. Sayer, 53 Fleet Street, London 1787 - Mezzotint. Printed on laid paper. In excellent condition with the exception of two mended tears in the upper margin. Tear across the bottom right corner. Image size: 9 3/8 x 13 3/4 inches. This is a lovely rich impression of this striking print which perfectly demonstrates Seymour's artistry and Burford's skill as an engraver. James Seymour is recognized as one of the earliest English sporting artists. He was the son of a wealthy goldsmith and diamond merchant who supplied the plate for racing trophies. His father was also an amateur artist and a member of the Virtuosi Club of St. Luke, a gentleman's club for artists and art lovers. The young Seymour had no formal art instruction but he learnt to draw by studying the pictures and prints in his father's collection. At an early age he was introduced to some of the leading artists of the day, but at the same time he was encouraged to develop a love of the track, which eventually lead to his financial ruin. Seymour was passionate about racing and in addition to drawing and painting them he is believed to have owned racehorses himself. With his prolific output and superior talents he quickly established himself as a successful sporting artist, counting among his patrons Sir William Jolliffe, and the 6th Duke of Sommerset. This wonderful print is part of a series of hunting scenes executed by Burford after Seymour and reissued by Sayer in 1787. As with many sporting prints published by Sayer, he has included a French title with the obvious intention of marketing this extremely attractive print to a European audience. James Seymour was one of the first true sporting artists in Britain; he was considered one of the most eminent horse painters of the age and this beautiful mezzotint by Burford is a testimony to his talent.

Felipe de Zúñiga y Ontiveros, Mexico City 1787 - [28]+344 pages with facsimile plate and map laid in. Octavo )8" x 6") bound in contemporary vellum. First edition, first issue with "PRO" catchword at end of index. Francisco Palou (1723¿1789) was a Franciscan missionary, administrator, and historian on the Baja California peninsula and in Alta California. Father Palou made significant contributions to the Alta California and Baja California mission systems. Along with his mentor, Junipero Serra, Palou worked to build numerous missions throughout Alta and Baja California, many structures of which still stand today. A member of the Franciscan Order, Palou became "Presidente" of the missions in Baja California, and later of missions of Alta California. Palou's work in the Spanish mission system spans from his early twenties to his death at the age of 66. Junípero Serra Ferrer, O.F.M (November 24, 1713-August 28, 1784) was a Spanish Franciscan friar who founded a mission in Baja California and the first nine of 21 Spanish missions in California from San Diego to San Francisco, which at the time were in Alta California of the Las Californias Province in New Spain. He began in San Diego on July 16, 1769, and established his headquarters near Monterey, California, at Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo. The missions were primarily designed to convert the natives. Other aims were to integrate the neophytes into Spanish society, and to train them to take over ownership and management of the land. As head of the order in California, Serra not only dealt with church officials, but also with Spanish officials in Mexico City and with the local military officers who commanded the nearby presidios (garrisons). Condition: Minor wear to vellum, lacking folding map and portrait plate (facsimiles laid in), remnants of original map at back, minimal foxing, bottom tie torn else a very good copy.         oeuvres de M. l'abbé Spallanzani

The Cabinet of Genius

London: for C. Taylor. Leather Bound. Fair. 1787, 1785. 2 vols. Each section individually paginated. 21 cm. Contains 80 plates. Full leather, corners bumped, hinges coming loose. Front board off. Some plates in first section of volume one stained at top, some foxing in both volumes, some tissue guards loose. Having checked several bibliographical listings of this item, it seems that the publisher collated this series in whatever fashion he fancied that day. No two volumes seem to be assembled in the same order (see the copy in the National Library for instance). The second volume of this set was separately issued in 1785, but is only listed as such in 1 library's holdings. Otherwise, the Cabinet of Genius is generally listed as being published 1787-1790. There are 80 plates in this set, but there is one set catalogued with up to 95 plates. However, there are no missing pieces, so it seems to have been assembled as such. Whatever the reason, this is still a lovely set, with very attractive stipple-engraved plates in sepia, and works by many popular authors of the day. There are 28 articles in volume 1, and 23 articles in volume 2. Charles Taylor was an engraver, printseller and bookseller, whose father and brother, both named Isaac, were also engravers. Taylor apprenticed with his father and studied under the renowned stipple engraver Francesco Bartolozzi. He visited Paris and on his return engraved plates after Robert Smirke and Angelica Kauffmann. During his 20s, he exhibited with the Society of Artists. Taylor became well known as an engraver of stipple prints, publishing many in book form, such as the Cabinet of Genius. He produced various illustrated works between 1783 and 1793 and works on drawing and other subjects from 1797 to 1819. His major project was the revision of Calmet's Dictionary of the Bible published anonymously in 1797 and reaching its 4th edition in 1824. (The London book trades 1775-1800 a preliminary checklist of members.). -- "Containing Frontispieces and Characters adapted to the most Popular Poems, &c. with the Poems &c at large. + Picturesque Miscellanies: Being A Series of Engravings. comprizing a coious Variety of Interesting Subjects.         To the Right Honourable Francis Godolphin Marquis of Caermarthen, Baron Osborne &c. &c. This View of Hanover Square, from a Drawing, in his Possession, Is with great respect inscribed by His Lordships obedient and obliged Servants, Rob[er]t Pollard & Fra[nci]s Jukes.

London R. Pollard Braynes Row Spa Fields & F. Jukes Howland Street December 1st 1787 - Engraved view of Hanover Square, with aquatint. Dimensions: 490 by 630mm. (19.25 by 24.75 inches). A fine view of Hanover Square engraved by Robert Pollard and Francais Jukes, after a painting by Edward Dayes. Trained at the Royal Academy in London, Edward Dayes was an English painter, draughtsman and printmaker. He is best known for his topographical watercolors, which he made for publications in the 1790s. However, he also produced drawings, oil paintings, etchings and aquatints ranging from large-scale history paintings to miniatures. Dayes was trained by his father in engraving and studied in the schools of the Royal Academy, where he began to exhibit in 1786, continuing to participate in exhibitions until his death. He became an exhibitor at the Society of British Artists and was elected a member in 1830. His mezzotints were highly esteemed, and he made engravings after the works of prominent contemporaries including Joshua Reynolds and J.M.W. Turner. Robert Pollard and Francis Jukes were British engravers who produced many prints together, with Pollard doing the etching and Jukes the aquatinting, sometimes after Pollard's own designs. Pollard began as a painter of landscapes and marine subjects, and went to London where he became an engraver to the book trade. He was established as a publisher by 1779, issuing a wide range of decorative, patriotic and topographical prints. He made a number of fine line engravings after paintings by Robert Smirke. Jukes chiefly produced topographical prints in engraving, etching and, most notably aquatint, at which he was particularly skilled.

        Oeuvres.

0.0 [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A Succinct Account of New South Wales and Observations on the Plan of establishing a Colony of Convicts at Botany Bay: With an accurate Chart of New Holland

London: W. Bent, March, 1787. Octavo, bound extract comprising pp. 113-168 from the Universal Magazine, with an unrelated engraved portrait plate and folding engraved chart measuring 275 x 205 mm., very good in gilt lettered half calf by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. Cockatoos of 'exquisite beauty'. Extract from the London published Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure for March 1787, containing a three page summary of plans for the convict settlement at Botany Bay. Of special interest is folding map accompanying the article captioned "Chart of New Holland with the Adjacent Countries and New Discover'd Islands 1787", containing good detail of the eastern coast of New South Wales and an inset detail of Botany Bay.The map is clearly derived from the chart accompanying An Historical Narrative of the Discovery of New Holland and New South Wales published by John Fielding in 1786. Clearly published to satisfy strong public interest in the planned convict colony, the article condenses information from the first voyage account of James Cook. Although short, the article is rich in detail, outlining early Dutch discoveries and the landfalls of William Dampier before treating Captain Cook's survey of the east coast. The passages treating the landscape and vegetation of Botany Bay echo the bountiful descriptions of Cook and Banks that fostered false hope and bitterly disappointed early settlers who found conditions far from suitable for ready agriculture. For example, here find 'the trees tall, straight, and without underwood, standing at such distance from each other, that the whole country, at least where the swamps do not render it incapable of cultivation, might be cultivated without cutting down one of them'. The beauty of Australian wildlife is likewise here reported before the First Fleet arrived at Sydney Cove: 'the trees overhead abounded with birds of various kinds, among which were many of exquisite beauty, particularly loriquets and cockatoos, which flew in flocks of several scores together'.Finally, the strategic and mercantile advantages a British colony in the South Pacific are discussed, especially regarding trade with China and the northwest coast of America: 'Its situation is well adapted for carrying on a trade between Nootka Sound and Cook's River, on the American coast, and the isles of Japan and the Chinese Empire, in sea-otter skins...'The Universal Magazine was published in separate parts in titling wrappers with continuous pagination, this example is complete without the wrappers (which were typically discarded).

Fraßspur in Marginalie, Ebd. berieben. (DBE) Deutsch [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Having entered the army of Frederick William I (1713-40) as an ensign, at the age of sixteen, he first attracted royal attention on account of his great height. Subsequently, his distinguished service during the Seven Years’ War (1756-63) secured rapid promotion to the rank of major-general. Frederick the Great considered his tactical ability to be without equal and, from 1763 until his death in 1785, he served as Inspector-General for the Magdeburg Infantry Inspection. His published thoughts on tactics – Taktik der Infanterie (1784) and Taktische Grundsätz (1786) – though in part criticized as impractical, were soon translated (into English in 1787). In Britain, his evolutions were copied directly by some regiments and his thoughts were influential in the formulation of the British tactical Rules and Regulations of 1792, the adoption of which was seen by many contemporaries as finally making complete the Prussianization of the British service’ (Blackwell Reference Online).
