(AUCTION CATALOGUE: AGUESSEAU (or DAGUESSEAU), Henri François & Jean Baptiste Paulin)
xxxvi, 366 pp., one leaf (but lacking, as is often the case, the 12-page schedule of sale & the 80-page author index). 8vo, cont. speckled calf (two corners a bit worn, joints a little cracked but strong), flat spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: Gogué & Née de la Rochelle, 1785. The rare sale catalogue of the great library of books and early manuscripts, many illuminated, founded by Henri François d'Aguesseau (1668-1751), Chancellor of France, a man of great learning. According to the preface of the catalogue he had acquired the collection of the poet Florent Chrestien (1541-1596), and his son Claude (b. 1567). His library passed to his second son, Jean Baptiste Paulin d'Aguesseau, Marquis de Mannoevre (1701-84) who considerably enlarged it. Between the two generations they created a most remarkable collection. The father and son employed fifteen versions of their coat-of-arms on their bindings. The sale included 5583 lots and was sold over a 57-day period. Payne and the Marquis de Méjanes were major buyers. Very good copy, with some minor foxing. Short tear due to a paper flaw to title but with no loss of text. Bookplate of the great French bookseller Georges Heilbrun. As mentioned above, this copy lacks - as does the Grolier Club copy - the schedule of sale and index, but it does have a final leaf in which the auctioneers promise to deliver the index at no charge by the end of May 1785 to anyone who requests a copy. ❧ Gustave Brunet, Dictionnaire de Bibliologie Catholique, col. 405-"cette vaste r&ea … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Ellis, William]
Hartford, CT: Barlow and Babcock, 1785. Ephemera. Nice copy overall. A single issue of The American Mercury, Vol. I - Numb. 28 for January 17, 1785. The lead article on page one is for Cook's last Voyage, by W. Ellis. Ellis was a member of the crew and released his version of the voyage unofficially. The Admiralty and Sir Joseph Banks were not pleased and Banks admonished Ellis in January 1792. The book was published in 1783. There are about 3 column inches recounting some of the conditions in Kamtschatka, how the language is Russian, their summer customs. The next 23 column inches recount sailing to China, where they anchor in Macau harbor, seeking supplies, and the various machinations of receiving permissions, trading with the Chinese (principally alcohol it seems), and the newly declared war between England and France. Pages 2 & 3 include ship sailings and arrivals, as wells an article by Richard Price "On the Means of promoting human Improvement and Happiness in the United States. On Public Debts." Page 4 includes an article "Anecdotes of Mons. Souffrien, sent us by a gentleman who was a long time prisoner on board his ship.", and advertisement for other publications, including Jedidiah Morse's "Geography Made Easy". There a small loss in the center (at the intersection of two period folds) and small stain in upper margin. 10 1/2 x 17", 4pp.

Barnard, Edward et al
London: Alexander Hogg, at No. 16, Pater-noster Row, 1785. Second edition. A most interesting copy, augmented with four contemporary manuscript maps with strong connections to James Cook's voyages. The intricate maps are in pen and ink, in the same ink & style as the signature of Henry Salmon, the owner of the book in 1790. This copy was poured over by Mr. Salmon. There are occasional ink spatters and a few minor notations; there is the remnant of his cup of tea splashed onto a page; and his intricate hand-drawn maps are meticulously drawn and strategically placed to reflect the nearby text. Although Mr. Salmon is not listed as an original subscriber, original subscribers include Mr. George William Anderson, editor of the folio edition of Cook's Voyages; and Mr. Arnold, author of the New History of America. This history of England and its rulers is replete with plates illustrating the rulers of every age. The section covering the reign of George II is a very important record of the Revolutionary War in America. This period is referred to in the title as "the Present Very Important Crisis". The images that illustrate this section are most important, for example, the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence. The American views include: "View of the Attack on Bunker's Hill with the Burning of Charles Town June 17th 1775"; "Portrait & Uniform of An American General (with) A real representation of the Dress of An American Rifle-Man"; "The American General Lee taken Prisoner by Lieutenant Colonel Harcourt of the English Army, in Morris Country, N … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mansion [Andre Leon Larue]
First edition of this guide to miniature painting designed for the education of young ladies. The author, Andre Leon Larue was born in 1785 and known professionally as Mansion. The son of a portrait painter, he worked as a miniaturist and also achieved remarkable results as a tinter of photographs during the 1840s and 50s. This was his first book on painting; the second was The Principles and Practice of Harmonious Colouring in Oil, Water, and Photographic Colours on Paper, Glass and Silver Plate. The present volume was reviewed by The Gentleman's Magazine as "a pleasing and useful assistant to the young student, affording much instruction in all departments of the art; with a short sketch of the various merits of many of the Old Masters, and most of the eminent modern ones".At the time this book was published miniature painting was considered an important accomplishment for young upper-class women, a demonstration of moral virtue and elevated aesthetic sensibility. Painting guides provided technical information but also "took pains to situate both the reader-cum-painter and the product within a social and cultural milieu of aestheticized gentility". In this case, Mansion has written the guide not solely as a technical manual, but as a story with a young female protagonist whose "adventures and relationships grounded the sentiments associated with miniatures in narrative and dialogue" and whose "progress as a painter, specifically as a miniaturist, unfolded apace with her progress as a young lady" (Kelly, Republic of Taste, p. 110). YOUNG (David), of Perth
Edinburgh: Printed for and Sold by the Author and by John Bell, 1785. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 8vo (in 4s), 217 x 137 mms., pp. xx, 403 [404 blank, 405 - 412 lists of subscribers], 3 engraved plates (one folding), contemporary polished sheepskin, gilt spine; lacks label, slight wear to joints, but a very good copy. Young (about whom little seems to be known) dedicates his book to the Board of Trustees for the Encouragement of Fisheries, Manufactures, and Improvements in Scotland. The essays cover historical, practical, and theoretical matters, including a retrospective of agricultural developments over the preceding four centuries. One essay takes up the methods of preventing emigration, while another consider whether large or small towns are better for the general good of the public. The Monthly Review commented, "We have seldom read a performance that assumes a more uninviting appearance than that now before us. The language is vulgar, and abounding in Scotticisms so as to be scarcely intelligible; the syle prolix and embarrassed, full of digressions that have no connection with the subject and repetitions without end. The Author is evidently unacquainted with the first principles of philosophy." After several more lines of similar severity, the reviewer adds that "the intelligent reader, who can pass over its imperfections will discover that some fundamental principles of agriculture are laid down in this work, and frequently inculcated with great and laudable zeal." Goldsmiths 12848. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

HEGRAD, S.L.].
Vienna 1785 - Engraved playing card, with original hand-colour, with engraved place names in French in the lower part of the card. Dimensions: 115 by 65mm. The card features a miniature map to its upper part with a key in French below with references to counties and towns. In this card the suitmarks have been replaced by coloured squares and a number followed by a small square follows each title. According to Sylvia Mann and David Kingsley, following comparison with other sets, this number appears to be a measurement of the area of the region depicted, "possibly in German miles". Mann Collection, 1125; Mann, Sylvia & Kingsley, David, 'Map Collectors' Circle No. 87: Playing Cards Depicting maps of the British Isles, and of English and Welsh Counties', p. 23, No.10; King, Geoffrey, 'Minature Antique Maps', p.162.
