Cavallo, Tiberius, F.R.S.
London: Printed for the author, 1785. First edition. 2 engraved folding plates. 326 pp., [7] pp. index, [1] p. ads. 8vo (8-3⁄4 x 5-1⁄2 inches). (Disbound, uncut, most of original rear wrapper intact). Brown morocco clamshell case. Provenance: George Morland (signature); Unidentified collector (sale, Christie's, 14 December 1984, lot 195). Wolf and Hayes, Library of Ben Franklin, no.563. First edition. 2 engraved folding plates. 326 pp., [7] pp. index, [1] p. ads. 8vo (8-3⁄4 x 5-1⁄2 inches). "Souvenir du 'Bon Homme Richard'". An influential scientific account of early aeronautical experiments, and the first English-language treatise on the subject. This copy has a presentation inscription from Benjamin Franklin to Pierre Samuel du Pont, followed by a presentation inscription from DuPont to a family member, possibly a daughter-in-law or grandchild. Written on the titlepage, the inscriptions read: "To Mr. DuPont de Nemours from his obliged and obedt. servt. B. Franklin"; and beneath that, "A ma chere cousine en Carolina, Aoust 1799, DuPont de Nemours Souvenir du 'Bon Homme Richard.'" Bon Homme Richard is, of course, a reference to Franklin's Poor Richard. Though the inscription by Franklin is faint, it was authenticated by Edwin Wolf in his survey of books which had belonged to Benjamin Franklin. Since Franklin gave the book away in his lifetime, it would not have been part of the final library he assembled in Philadelphia at the end of his life. While serving as American plenipotentiary in France, Franklin took a keen interest in the first balloon a … [Click Below for Full Description]

More à Chaptal', n°370). Cet ouvrage fut con … [Click Below for Full Description]

[ Webber, John ; Cook, Captain ]
1785. Very Good. Engraving of A View of Karakakooa in Owyhee. Remargined paper size 15 1/4 x 10 3/4 inches (38.5 x 27.3 cm). Professionally remargined and laid down on tissue by Green Dragon bindery. We think the first edition of this engraving was created by John Webber, engraved by W. Byrne, and published in the atlas (plate 68) to accompany "A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean, London: W. and A. Strahan for G. Nicol, 1784." This example is smaller, lightly tinted and rather than being engraved by Byrne, is marked "Taylor sculp" lower right. In pencil it is marked on rear "opposite p. 577, Cooks' Voyages, 1785 edition". We have been unable to trace to our satisfaction exactly where this engraving was published. It is nonetheless a famous scene and desirable to those who collect voyages, Hawaii, and the location where Captain Cook eventually died.

Ames, J. ; Herbert, W.
Printed for the editor, and sold by Mr. T. Payne and Son, Mr. Benjamin White, Mr. L. Davis, Mr. Dodsley, Mr. Robson, Mr. Nichol, Mess. Leigh and Soleby [sic], Mr. Collins, and the rest of the booksellers of Great Britain and Ireland, . London, edition, 1785-1790 - 3 vols, modern half-calf and marbled boards, leather spine-labels and gilt decoration, top edges gilt, 4to, complete with list of subscribers, 3 portraits, and 8 specimens of printing on 7 plates. According to Bigmore & Wyman: "The Typographical Antiquities is the great storehouse for the History of English Printing. The original edition [of 1749], for the time in which it appeared, is a very complete undertaking. Herbert was no less industrious than the original compiler, and from the many more sources of information opened to him than were available to Ames, he extended the work [in his second edition of 1785-1790] to three volumes. Nor did his industry stop there, as is evidenced by his copy of the book, now in the library of the British Museum, interleaved, and bound in six volumes, with a very large number of additions in manuscript. This copy was formerly in the possession of Dr. T. F. Dibdin, and was used by him in his enlarged edition of Ames - a work the magnificent promise of which he never fulfilled. The four volumes of Dibdin's edition [of 1810-1819] describe only the printers of London, so that both Herbert's and Dibdin's editions are necessary to the student." Esdaile wrote: "[the] whole study was put on a new basis by the great work of William Herbert. Herbert had acquired Ames's book and materials, … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

WILLETT, Ralph
Title with large engraved allegorical vignette & 25 engraved plates (seven are double-page, many folding). Parallel texts in English & French. 2 p.l., 14 pp. Large folio, cont. marbled boards (rebacked & recornered, some foxing), orig. red morocco lettering piece on spine. London: Printed for the Author by John Nichols, 1785. First illustrated edition. This privately printed and remarkable work is a splendid record of probably the most magnificent private library building constructed in England in the 18th century. Ralph Willet (1719-95), after inheriting the family's West Indian estates, devoted his life to scholarship, botany, and the collecting of books and pictures. He formed a very rich library, strong in incunabula, travel, botany, topography, and architecture. To properly house these books, Willet constructed a library room for his house at Merly. "Few collectors can have given more thought to the creation of a fitting casket for their treasures…The room was 84 feet long 23 feet wide, and 23 feet high, of which 5 feet, six inches were coving. The bookcases, 13 feet 4 inches high, were of carved mahogany, enriched with a complete Ionic order. The top of each bookcase was flanked with busts, and in the centre was an ornamental scroll inscribed with the subject contained in that case, crowned by the lamp of science with the motto 'Non Extinguatur'… "But it was the plasterwork of cove and ceiling which made this unique among Georgian libraries. Thought up by Willet and executed by a 'Mr. Collins', the theme was nothing less than the origin and progress of c … [Click Below for Full Description]
