Paine, Thomas, 1737 - 1809]. Hall, John - Author
1785. Unpaginated, though 40 pp. 1st & last leaf blank, with 2 quarters of an unidentified watermark visible. Vertical chain-lines. 6-1/8" x 4" [15.8 cm x 10 cm]. Period marbled paper wrappers, with hand-inked title label to front wrapper. Wrappers neatly rebacked and resewn; occasional neat correction to text or small ink spot. VG+. Item #36163 A manuscript journal written by John Hall, a mechanical engineer from Leicester, England, during his ocean voyage to the U.S. in 1785. Hall emigrated to Philadelphia that year carrying papers for Thomas Paine and escorting the wife of Revolutionary Captain Robert Coltman's wife, Sarah, and their son, William, both of whom appear as passengers in the journal. Hall's journals, of which 63 numbered volumes are known to exist and which span his long friendship and engineering projects with Paine, have long been considered a major primary source for biographical material about Paine. This journal is a copy of the first in that series, and deals only with Hall's journey to Philadelphia. Discussion with the Library Company of Philadelphia, who hold almost all of Hall's numbered journals, including the original of this one, and digital comparison of the two, reveal that the copy offered here is in Hall's hand and has minor textual differences and editing. The journal begins with a full list of passengers and crew aboard the Eagle, sailing from London to Philadelphia under the command of Captain John Ker. The first dated entry is June 3rd, when Hall, Mrs. Coltman, and a Miss Johnson leave London for Gravesend, where Hall and Coltman board th … [Click Below for Full Description]

SPARRMAN (Anders)
Paris, Printed for G.G.J. and J. Robinson, 1785, relié en 1 vol. pl. veau raciné époque, dos lisse finement orné, coiffe sup. anciennement restaurée (peu visible) et petite mouillure ne marge des dernières planches sinon, bel exemplaire finement relié. Rare first English edition. Anders Sparrman was a Swedish naturalist, disciple of Carl Linnaeus. He traveled to the Cape in early 1772 on a botanical expedition sponsored by the Swedish government and made several excursions into the country in search of natural history specimens. When James Cook arrived there later in the year at the start of his "second voyage", he was taken on as an assistant naturalist to Johann and Georg Forster. For the next three years he served with Cook on his famous reconnaisance of the South Pacific (1772-1775). His account includes a mention of a hairbreath escape from the collision of Cook's two ships, the Adventure and the Resolution, not recorded elsewhere. Then returning to Cape Town, he financed a journey into the interior (Cox). Sparrman's account of his explorations through Kaffararia is important for its natural history and anthropological observations of Southern Africa and is, according to Theal, "the most trustworthy account of the Cape Colony and the various races of people then residing in it, that has been published in the 18th century". It includes a brief glossary of the Hottentot language and full page plates of indigenous animals. Also Sparrman used the newly Linnaen system of classification for the new varieties of plants and animals he collected. His account also includes some … [Click Below for Full Description]

(AUCTION CATALOGUE: SAUVETERRE, -, Comte de)
1785. 15 pp. 8vo, late 19th-century red cloth, title on spine. Paris: Folliot & Delalande, 1785.A rare sale catalogue, of which we find no copy in North America. It describes a choice collection of 15 lots, with paintings by Poussin, Albani, Bril, Teniers, N. Berghem, etc. The experts write that normally with such a small collection they would not have issued a catalogue, but with the quality of these paintings, they thought it prudent to publish one. The Comte de Sauveterre was a high-level representative of the French king in Germany; however, we do not know his first name.Fine copy of a rarity in a red cloth binding similar to those favored by the Goncourt brothers. Engraved bookplate of the Parisian art dealer Georges Pannier (1853-1944), and stamp of the Bibliothèque Heim in the usual location.❧ Lugt 3848.

Album amicorum -, .
Sehr hübsches Stammbuch aus Frankfurt und Usingen. - Titelblatt: "Meinen Freunden gewidmet. Christoph Hartmann Hiltebrandt. Frankfurt im Novbr. 1785". Usingen 1981. - Von schöner Erhaltung.

LIE DE BEAUMONT (Jean-Baptiste-Jacques);
Paris 11 novembre 1785 ». : Arthus Bertrand... Pages 451 Vol.2 430 pp., vol.3 455 pp., vol. 4 468 pp.. Language French 8, clean print, scarce. HERE WITH PROMINENT PROVENANCE: HOFBIBLIOTHEK WITTELSBACH. Philippe-Alexandre Le Brun de Charmettes (17851870) was a French historian, poet, translator and official. De Charmettes was born in Bordeaux (France). He was appointed to the French Conseil d'État in 1810 and became a préfet (prefect) in the French department of Haute-Saône in 1830. A contributor to the literary magazine lAbeille littéraire, created by Victor Hugo in 1821, he is mainly known for his successful efforts to rescue the figure of Jeanne d'Arc from partial oblivion and turn her into a national heroine. His interest for Joan came at a time when France was still struggling to define its new identity after the Revolution and the Napoleonic wars. The national ethos was in search of non controversial heroes. A staunch prop to King and country, Joan of Arc was an acceptable symbol to the monarchists. As a patriot and the daughter of commoners, she was seen as one prototype of the low-born volunteers (the soldats de l'an II) who had victoriously fought for revolutionary France in 1802 and as such could be claimed by the Republicans. As a religious martyr, she was also popular in the powerful Catholic community. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Boswell, James.
1785. London: Henry Baldwin for Charles Dilly, 1785. Sm. 8vo, iii-vii (lacks half-title), [1], 524, [1]pp. Modern full diaper calf panelled in gilt, backstrip stamped and lettered in gilt with 4 raised bands, a lovely retrospective binding by Dusel. § First edition, mixed issue; E3, E4 and M4 are cancels, as usual; leaves I5, Q7 and U6 are in Pottle's second state. We first sold this copy in 2005 after Dusel rebound it. It makes a very attractive "gift" copy. "Though the Life is a vaster and richer piece of work, no one will maintain that it displays Boswell's unique gift for biography better than the Tour. Indeed, most lovers of Boswell will agree that the Tour as a whole, is more consistently good than the Life; that is, that nowhere in the Life could one find so many consecutive first-class pages as those that compose this book" (Pottle 57). Bound in contemporary vellum, gilt borders on the boards, gilt spine; the arms of Pius VI (Giovanni Angelico Braschi of Cesena 1717-1799) gilt on both boards; very fresh copy, with only a few minor abrasions to the vellum binding. Only Edition. Beautiful copy printed by Giambattista Bodoni at the Stamperia Reale in Parma. It is illustrated with 15 engravings and seven head- and tail-pieces designed by Gerli and Domenico Muzzi and engraved by Domenico Gagnoni, Girolamo Mantelli and Giuseppe Patrini, engravers who worked closely with the Bodoni's press. Gerli's Opuscoli, is divided into five parts, all of which are testaments to his technical and artistic skills. The first part is devoted to Gerli's construction of a hot air balloon, based on designs published by Montgolfier. The 6 engravings that accompany his explanatory text illustrate many of the components that make up the balloon structure as well as technical images of the balloon in flight. Part two is a description of a novel method of making pavement for interior floors using a glaze that resembles marble and decorating it with designs that resemble the paintings of the Renaissance masters. The third part is a Gerli's method for plastering walls and decorating them with encaustic paintings in the style of the ancient Greeks and Romans. This part is illustrated with 3 plates. [ Webber, John ; Cook, Captain ]
circa 1785. Engraving of A View of Karakakooa in Owyhee. Remargined paper size 15 1/4 x 10 3/4 inches (38.5 x 27.3 cm). Professionally remargined and laid down on tissue by Green Dragon bindery. Very Good. We think the first edition of this engraving was created by John Webber, engraved by W. Byrne, and published in the atlas (plate 68) to accompany "A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean, London: W. and A. Strahan for G. Nicol, 1784." This example is smaller, lightly tinted and rather than being engraved by Byrne, is marked "Taylor sculp" lower right. In pencil it is marked on rear "opposite p. 577, Cooks' Voyages, 1785 edition". We have been unable to trace to our satisfaction exactly where this engraving was published. It is nonetheless a famous scene and desirable to those who collect voyages, Hawaii, and the location where Captain Cook eventually died.

Beaumarchais, Pierre Augustin Caron De
au Palais Royal, chez Ruault, 1785. First edition, 8vo, pp. [4], lvi, 237; later full speckled calf, red morocco label on gilt decorated spine; slight wear at the top of the spine, else generally a fine copy. Contemporary ownership inscription of Alfred Vaux. Beaumarchais (1732-1799) aided the American cause by purchasing supplies for the American army in the Revolution. This play is his famous sequel to his earlier Le Barbier de Seville. It was first performed in 1784 and because of its immediate success there are many editions printed in 1785, this being the first. It was the later inspiration for the operas of Rossini and Mozart. Tchemerzine, II, p. 14-15: "The first edition was published without illustrations. Very soon after 5 illustrations by St Quentin were added." Printing and the Mind of Man 230: "Public interest was whetted by its satirical references to the aristocracy, and it was this that first won it fame. Although greeted with enthusiasm by French society, it in fact contributed largely to its destruction. It is, however, the music of Mozart which has immortalized it as the perfect type of comedy...no one can doubt its immortality.". [Attributes: First Edition]

- Exlibris. John]. [COWPER, William - Adaptations] [GILPIN
1785. [Literature] ~ SPURIOUS BIOGRAPHY OF JOHN GILPIN [GILPIN, John]. [COWPER, William - Adaptations] The life of John Gilpin, taken From divers Manuscripts in the Possession of the Family, and now published, for the first Time, by their Permission, for the Gratification of the Public Curiousity, respecting so extraordinary a Character.. Dublin. Printed for Messrs. Burnet, White, Burton, H. Whitestone, Byrne, Cash, M'Donnel, and Marchbank, 1785. 12mo. viii, 144pp. Contemporary tree-calf, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece, gilt. Rubbed and marked, later sympathetic repairs to upper joint, short split to foot of lower joint. Inscriptions of George Gore, along with other pen-trials, to blank fly-leaves and dedication leaf, some marginal worming at end. The rare first Irish edition of a little known, entirely spurious and understandably comedic prose 'life' of the fictional draper from Cheapside, John Gilpin, star of William Cowper's ballad 'The diverting history of john gilpin'. Cowper's verse, which follows Gilpin on an intended journey to the Bell Inn, Edmondton, during which he became separated from his family and was taken by an out of control horse to a town ten miles distant, had first appeared, anonymously, in the Public Advertiser (1782). The poem's popularity was immortalised in a series of performances at Freemason's Hall by the acclaimed Shakespearean actor John Henderson (1747-1785), and well capitalised upon by the London ballad and print trade, as well as by provincial stage-managers.
