        Gadus Merluccius

Ichthyologie. Marcus Elieser Bloch., 1785-97. The Hake. Plate CLXIV. Copper engraving. Original colour. In fine condition. Size: 37 x 19 cm. (14½ x 7½ inches). Marcus Éliéser Bloch was born in 1723 in Anspach. He spent the earlier part of his career as a physician, studying intestinal worms. It was not until the age of 57, that Bloch turned to the study of fish, and set himself the task of providing full descriptions and illustrations of the species known to him. His first work focused on German fish and was entirely original, based on his own observations, reliable and thorough. His study of foreign fishes, however, was based on the works of others. Thus it was subject to many of the misconceptions that filtered through the great body of travel literature during the 18th century - presenting a range of illustrations with exacting accuracy on one hand or enticing imagination on the other. Bloch worked with a number of artists. Bloch's work is much sought after, and has endured to the extent that there are several editions of his work still in print today. Engraved by SCHMIDT, Ludewig.

R.P. Natalis Alexandri ... Historia ecclesiastica Veteris Novique Testamenti ab orbe condito ad annum post Christum natum millesimum sexcentesimum: et in loca ejusdem insignia dissertationes historicae, chronologicae, cr

Bingii ad Rhenum: G. C. Voigt, 1785-1791.. Sm. 4to.(25 cm). Full mottle calf, raised bands, gilt decorated compartments, morocco labels, marbled endpapers, all edges red. First quarto edition. Quibus accedunt, praeter animadversiones a P. Joanne Dominico Mansi .. in 2. Lucensi editione inserta [sic], aliae insuper ejusdem auctoris noviter elucubratae. Illus. Brunet I, 169. Noel Alexandre, or Alexander Natalis (1639-1724), was a French historian and theologian, of the Order of St. Dominic who studied philosophy and theology in the convent of Saint Jacques, Paris, where he taught for twelve years, obtained the licentiate from the Sorbonne, and in 1675, the doctorate, and was urged to write a complete history of the church, the first volume appearing in 1677. ?His directness and conciseness, his critical acumen, and his manner of viewing history and dividing it into special studies (then quite original, although now common enough) won for him the approbation of the learned. The first volumes of the history brought him letters of commendation and praise from Pope Innocent XI and many cardinals, but later volumes gave offense at Rome because of the author's Gallicism, and Innocent XI finally forbade the faithful to read ..it, " Cath.Ency. Alexandre corrected the work in the third edition. Constantino Roncaglia brought out a sixth edition, unaltered, but with the addition of paragraphs and dissertations correcting the most offensive statements. The work was thus removed from the Index by Pope Benedict XIII. The edition offered here is the best and most complete, edited by Giovan Domenico Mansi who added many explanatory notes. An anonymous writer in two supplementary volumes (also included here) carried the history into the eighteenth century, and added various dissertations from other historians. The work thus completed appeared at Venice in 1778, in eleven folio volumes, and at Bingen, 1785-91, in twenty volumes. Spines and boards rubbed and scuffed, worn at extremities, heads and heels of a few volumes chipped, calf occasionally darkened or brittle mainly on spines, library call numbers to lower compartments, seminary book plate to front pastedowns, occasional bookseller's ticket, bindings tight, some scattered foxing otherwise leaves clean and unmarked. A valuable set.

In folio gr. "Prima edizione". Cfr. Fowler Collection,234: "First printing of Scamozzi?s edition of ?Le terme dei Romani?" based on Lord Burlington?s edition of 1730.. The plan of the Baths of Agrippa, missing from the Burlington collection, was obtained by Scamozzi from Temanza and included in this work? - Berlin Katalog,I,1877 - Cicognara,599.

A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean Undertaken by the Command of His Majesty, For Making Discoveries in the Northern Hemisphere. Performed under the direction of Captains Cook, Clerke, and Gore...The Second Edition

London: Printed by H. Hughs, for g. Nicol...and T. Cadell, 1785 Second edition of Captain John Cook's important third voyage, the cornerstone of any Pacific voyages collection. The first edition was published in 1784, five years after Cook's tragic death in Hawaii. This second edition differs very little from the first and has the same plates. . The text volumes are in full contemporary tree calf. The spines are ruled in gilt, with brown and black morocco labels. The binding extremities are a little rubbed, the labels are in some cases a bit chipped, and there are some neat hinge repairs, but this is a very good, attractive set. There are contemporary armorial bookplates ("T. Comyns Wood") in each volume. Three quarto text volumes, plus folio atlas volume. With all of the eighty-seven engraved plates called for, including twenty-four in the text volumes and sixty-three in the atlas. In addition, the atlas volume contains a second set of the twenty-four plates that are included in the text volume. The atlas volume is in half morocco over marbled boards. The boards are rubbed, and the endpapers creased, and there is again some minor hinge repair. In addition, there is light marginal dampstaining to a few plates, but the atlas too is overall in very good condition. Cook earned his place in history by opening up the Pacific to western civilization and by the foundation of British Australia. The world was given for the first time an essentially complete knowledge of the Pacific Ocean and Australia, and Cook proved once and for all that there was no great southern continent, as had always been believed. He also suggested the existence of antarctic land in the southern ice ring, a fact which was not proved until the explorations of the nineteenth century. Cook was a brilliant navigator and hydrographer, an excellent administrator and planner, and probably the first sea captain to realize the importance of preserving the health and well-being of his crew..." (Printing and the Mind of Man, 223, describing Cook's second voyage).

Autograph letter signed to an unidentified correspondent

London. Hooker, William Jackson (1785-1865). Autograph letter signed to an unidentified correspondent. [London,] Royal Gardens, Kew, April 3, n.d. (probably 1857 or after). 3pp. 179 x 112 mm. Fine apart from a little faint spotting.Hooker, the first full-time director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, devoted himself to the study of botany from an early age, specializing in mosses, liverworts and other cryptogamia. He served as regius professor of botany at the University of Glasgow from 1820 to 1841, when he was appointed to head Kew Gardens. Under Hooker's leadership Kew grew from eleven acres to its present size of nearly 300 acres, and its collections vastly increased, largely due to a network of Hooker's former students who brought in specimens from around the world. Hooker's own herbarium, which contained some 4000 volumes and one million dried plant specimens, was purchased by the British government for the nation after Hooker's death. Hooker was the author of over two dozen works on botany, including British Jungermanniae (1816), which established hepaticology (the study of liverworts) as a separate field; he also edited several botanical journals. The first part of Hooker's letter deals with the preparation of a forthcoming botanical publication, most likely The Museum of Economic Botany, or a Popular Guide to the Useful and Remarkable Vegetable Products in the Two Museum Buildings of the Royal Gardens of Kew (1858): "I have received & read & made 2 or 3 verbal corrections & transmitted as you desired to Mr. Wyatt (I presume at the Palace of Westminster) our Cat[alogue]. Having been unavoidably absent of late I know not what has been done by our Committee. If the present Catalogue is circulated by itself I think it requires a heading or title for not one word appears of the use & object of it: so that no one could comprehend the object of it. The asterisks before any name I understood were to indicate that specimens of the plant itself are required as well as the product. . . . I find asterisks against Chinese Tea, & Coffee & Theobroma Cacao:--but they must surely have a different meaning there, for one cannot desire them so against Salvadora Persica [the "toothbrush tree"] &c. &c. . . ."The next part of Hooker's letter touches on the work of Brian Houghton Hodgson (1800-1894), a naturalist and one of the pioneers of scientific ethnology. Hodgson spent much of his life in India, where he discovered 39 species of mammals and 124 species of birds that had hitherto been undescribed. He was the author of numerous books and papers, including Papers Relative to the Colonization, Commerce, Physical Geography, &c., &c. of the Himalaya Mountains and Nepal, published in Calcutta in 1857. He was a close friend of Hooker's son, the naturalist Joseph Dalton Hooker (1817-1911)."What an interesting acct. of the Physical Geography of the Himalayas Hodgson has published. You know Hodgson is preparing a capital Physico-geographical work on India written by Bagham[?]. He wishes a publisher. Do you think [?] Allen & Co. would be the men if I were to put the mst. into their hands?""Allen & Co." most likely refers to the publisher W. H. Allen & Co., which issued a large number of books relating to India in the 1850s.

A Voyage to the Cape of Good Hope Towards the Antarctic Polar Circle and Round the World but Chiefly Into the Country of the Hottentots and Caffres, From the Year 1772, to 1776

London: G.G.J. and J. Robinson, 1785. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Andrew Sparrman was a Swedish physician and naturalist. He arrived in South Africa on 10 January 1772. He joined Captain Cook on the Resolution on 22 November 1772. Returning in 1775, he undertook further exploration that lasted until April 1776, taking him as far as Kaffraria - what is today the southeast part of Eastern Cape of South Africa. Sparrman's account of Cook's voyage, as well as his exploration in Africa, are described in this book. Included is a brief glossary of Hottentot language and full page plates of indigenous animals, as well as the original errata and instructions to the bookbinder. Two volumes, in a recent fine half leather binding over marbled paper boards with leather corners, raised and gilt spine bands, gilt rules, and red spine labels. The binding is nearly as-new. The contents are exceptionally clean and well-preserved, with only trivial scattered hints of spotting. The pages are bright and clean, with immaculate illustrated plates, including the striking Volume I frontispiece plate "Prospect of the Country at the Cape of Good Hope". The large folding map at the end of Volume I is also clean and intact with no tears. Sparrman's work was one of the earliest on Southern Africa and the Southern Oceans.

        LES AVENTURES DE TÉLÉMAQUE

Paris: Imprimerie de Monsieur [i.e., Pierre-François Didot], 1785. Hardcover. In a Fine Staggemeier and Welcher Binding, With a Very Large, Early, Edwards(?) Painting. 340 x 264 mm. mm (13 3/8 x 10 3/8"). 4 p.l., 305, [1] pp.; 2 p.l., 297, [3] pp. Two volumes bound in one. ELEGANT RED CONTEMPORARY STRAIGHT-GRAIN MOROCCO, BY STAGGEMEIER & WELCHER, the covers with a wide gilt border composed of onlaid strips of blue goatskin tooled with a Greek-key roll, with a square green goatskin onlay at the corners tooled with a medallion, and with an inner frame composed of an onlaid citron goatskin band and large, graceful gilt impressions of flowers, foliage, and ears of wheat. Smooth spine divided into four unequal compartments by a strip of onlaid green goatskin tooled with a gilt pentaglyph and metope roll, lettered in the second compartment on a green goatskin label, and directly on the spine at the foot, the first compartment tooled with a face-in-the-sun, the third (elongated) compartment featuring a strange figure with a winged helmet holding festoons of flowers, balancing on top of a flower issuing from a large neoclassical vase, the vase in turn perched on a candelabrum, the edges of the boards and turn-ins tooled with gilt rolls, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. WITH A FORE-EDGE PAINTING, VERY PROBABLY CONTEMPORARY, OF TWO BOATS SAILING ON A LAKE, WITH A STATELY HOME IN THE BACKGROUND. With engraved printer's device on title pages and two frontispiece portraits of the author engraved by Dequevauviller, one in an early state before letters, and one printed on India paper and mounted. Brunet II, 1215. A hint of wear to corners, spine a little darkened, slight variation in color of the leather covers, other minor defects, but the extremely handsome binding entirely solid, with nothing approaching a significant fault, and the covers especially lustrous with bright gilt. Intermittent pale foxing in the text (a few gatherings with faint overall browning or more noticeably foxed), but the leaves remarkably fresh (they crackle as you turn them), very clean, and printed within vast margins. Fénelon's masterwork is presented here in a sumptuous package in terms of its beautiful binding, its historically interesting fore-edge painting, and its stately printed page. Like Kalthoeber and several other German binders, Staggemeier and Welcher came to England to satisfy the fashionable need among gentry and nobility for elegant bindings. In partnership in London from about 1799 to 1810, the two oversaw "one of the most prolific workshops producing 'extra' quality work in London." (Maggs Catalogue 1212) They were known for bindings with typically tasteful and often elaborate gilt decoration, and they were among the very best at producing these highly finished volumes. Our binding is unsigned, but many of the same tools can be found on signed and related examples, the face-in-the-sun being a particular favorite. The large scroll tools around the inside of the border were used on a copy of "The Memoirs of Count Grammont" (1794) from the collection of Otto Schäfer, (sold Sotheby's New York, 1 November 1995, lot 111) and on Birch, "The Heads of Illustrious Persons" (1756), illustrated in Foot, "The Henry Davis Gift," II, 198. The scrolls also appear on two vellum bindings, along with the strange figure on the spine, one being on a copy of "Campi Phlegræi" (1779) from the J.R. Abbey collection (sold Sotheby's, 22 June 1965, lot 368), and secondly on an album of drawings from the Estelle Doheny collection (sold Christie's New York, 18 October 1988, lot 1596). This style of binding, and especially the treatment of the covers with the colored onlays and scroll and wheat tools, had a far-reaching influence and was closely followed by binders such as Krauss in Vienna and Zaidler in St. Petersburg. Another copy of this edition of Télémaque, said to be bound by Staggemeier and Welcher in blue goatskin and with a fore-edge painting of a chateau, was in the Doheny collection and was sold on 17 October 1988 as lot 1320. The size of the present volume gave the painter of our fore-edge scene considerable room to create a pleasing, detailed panorama containing a stately home surrounded by weeping willows on the left, and a lake before it and to the right. On the water are two sailing vessels next to each other, the larger one occupied by a crew wrestling with the sails, while a third craft, a dinghy with several passengers, bobs alongside. The marine action is set against a wooded shore and fluffy white clouds in the sky above. We believe that this painting may very well be early, perhaps even contemporaneous with the binding. It has many of the qualities associated with fore-edge scenes from the final years of the 18th century and first years of the 19th, particularly those done by Edwards of Halifax, the firm generally credited with creating and popularizing this especially pleasing decorative innovation. In fact, there is no reason to resist the hypothesis that our painting might well have been done for Edwards, especially since it looks like known paintings from that celebrated firm and because there was an active collaboration between Edwards and Didot, the printer here. Our painting has stock Edwards elements (pastoral English countryside with stately home on the left, body of water on the right, bushy trees as dressing); it was done (or at least is found today) in pastel colors; and it appears on a volume printed by Didot, a supplier for Edwards of numerous books that ended up with fore-edge paintings. Whatever the origin of the painting, the present volume is a lovely artifact that reflects the highest level of achievement in bookmaking of the period. The text here is a classic work of French literature. François de Salignac de la Mothe-Fénelon (1651-1715) was a Catholic theologian, writer, and former royal tutor best known for the present book, which was on the surface a retelling of the story of Ulysses' son Telemachus, but was in fact a subtle attack on the absolute monarchy of France under Louis XIV. Although often seen with plates, Brunet informs us that the book was sold both with and without engravings.

The Whole Life and Strange Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, of York, Mariner: Who Lived Eight and Twenty Years All Lone in an Uninhabited Island, on the Coast of America, near the Mouth of the Great River of Oroonoque

London: Printed at the Logographic Press, and Sold By J. Walter, 1785. First Logographic Edition. 8vo. Two volumes. [4], 485, [1]. [4], 452pp. Complete with engraved frontispiece to each volume, with tissue guard to volume II. Handsomely bound in contemporary speckled tan calf, gilt, contrasting red morocco lettering-pieces. Slightly rubbed, with a little chipping at head and feet, spines somewhat discoloured, the surfaces of which slightly cracked. Small chip to lower joint of Vol I. Small paper flaw to D8, vol II, touching text but without loss of sense. Very occasional pencilled notes to text. First published in 1719, Defoe's Robinson Crusoe is the cornerstone work in the canon of castaway literature. Its enduring popularity ensured that it was published throughout the eighteenth-century, however this edition of 1785 is a novelty inasmuch as it is the first edition to be printed on John Walker's innovative 'logographic' press. A variation on existing letterpress typography, this method of printing collected the previously separately set letters of each word in a printed text into 'logotypes', thus reducing the duration of typesetting and the frequency of errors. Most famously, Walker's Logographic Press also printed the Daily Universal Register, which was to be renamed as The Times in 1789 and become under his son's editorship the most influential newspaper of the nineteenth-century. ESTC records two variant titles of this 1785 edition, this present set is the scarcer - with only 4 copies located (Oxford, St. Deniol's, McMaster and Newbery). ESTC T180363.

The Adventures of the Six Princesses of Babylon, in their Travels to the Temple of Virtue: An Allegory

London - T. Bensley, 1785 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A fascinating example of this 18th century allegory for children, based on Spensers Faerie Queene. Its author, bookseller and children's author Lucy Peacock(17851816), kept a shop in Oxford Street, London. Although little is known of her life, it is likely that she was married, as the publisher's imprint on some of her works states that they were printed for R. and L. Peacock. The Adventures of the Six Princesses of Babylon was one of her earliest works, of which five editions were printed, and which was dedicated, by permission to her Royal Highness the Princess Mary. (ODNB)With a subscribers list comprised of over 1000 individuals. Signed by the author on the final page of the text. Scarce first edition. Condition: Expertly rebacked in calf with the original boards laid down. Externally, rather worn to extremities though spine remains smart. Rear hinge a little strained. Internally, firmly bound. Some scattered spotting throughout with slight tidemarks to the upper margins of several pages, otherwise pages are clean with just a few handling marks. Neat, fadedink inscription to front free endpaper. Overall: VERY GOOD..
