ESQUISSES D'ARCHITECTURE ].

c.1785. - Volume in-folio. 77ff.

[Paris] Renouard n.d. [1785] - This copy with the engraved bookplate of Percy Hamilton Clark, perhaps the most famous American cricketer of all time, who in 1903 ushered in what has been called the "Golden Age" of cricket in the U.S.A. 167 engraved plates, 154 of which are numbered and 13 unnumbered, by Moreau the Younger, Monnet and Lepicier depicting the history of France and including frameworks for descriptive text of Monsieur l'Abbe' Garnier. Large 8vo, (29 by 20.5 cm), in handsome antique three-quarter red morocco over marbled boards, the spine ornately gilt lettered and decorated. 167 leaves, printed on one side only. A very pleasing copy, internally very fine and fresh, the binding with some light, expected evidence of age. A VERY BEAUTIFULLY PRODUCED WORK. This impressive suite of engravings depict the history of France from the inauguration of Pharamond (circa 428) to the year 1314. Moreau had intended to carry on with the engraving work and bring the book up to his own time, but the project was unfortunately never completed. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Natursystem aller bekannten in- und ausländischen Insecten, als eine Fortzetsung der von Büffonschen Naturgeschichte. Nach dem System des Ritters Carl von Linné bearbeitet: KÄFER.

Berlin, J. Pauli, 1785-1806. 5 text-vols (of 10). 8vo (195 x 120mm) and 3 atlas volumes. Oblong-4to (265 x 210mm). With 1 engraved handcoloured frontispiece and 5 handcoloured title-vignettes and 202 plates, of which 201 beautifully coloured. Contemporary half calf, gilt lettered spines. A very fine copy of one of the most attractive early works on coleoptera, lacking the last 5 text volumes. First and only edition of this superbly illustrated work on exotic and European coleoptera. Carl Gustav Jablonsky was private secretary to the Queen of Prussia. After Jablonsky's untimely death Herbst edited the work from volume 2 on. A great number of the plates were drawn by Jablonsky. The work should be considered a first attempt to a total survey of the coleoptera. A sequel was published to the above work dealing with butterflies. "The Frenchmen were however preceded in their illustrated compilation of the Cook voyage entomology by Johann Herbst in Berlin, whose illustrated monographs on beetles (Natursystem der Käfer) were published between 1783 and 1795. Although he may have visited London, it is more likely that Herbst saw duplicates given to Fabricius by Banks and taken by the former to Kiel, which is relatively more accessible from Berlin. His illustrations of New Zealand insects are the earliest published" (Andrews, The Southern Ark p. 45). Andrews quotes the wrong dates of publication. All plates have brilliant colouring. One atlas volume has small repair at ends of spine and the paper of the boards of the atlas volumes has been replaced.//Provenance: Bookplate of Reinold Charpentier.//Nissen ZBI, 2078; Junk, Rara I, 10.

AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, FROM JAMES SULLIVAN TO ELBRIDGE GERRY, CALLING FOR FRUGALITY AS A NATIONAL CHARACTERISTIC, INCLUDING AT THE PRESIDENT'S DINING TABLE].

Boston. Jan. 11, 1785. - 7pp., on two folded sheets. Docketed by Gerry on verso of final leaf. Folio. Old fold lines. Minor soiling. Strip of later paper attached to left margin on verso of each piece. Very good. In a green half morocco and cloth clamshell case, spine gilt. A letter written by James Sullivan, a Massachusetts lawyer and politician, to Founding Father Elbridge Gerry, discussing the need for frugality to be a core American virtue. Sullivan was involved in the convention that wrote the state's first constitution, and led the movement to secure representation in the lower House for a representative from each town. He served as Massachusetts Attorney General from 1790 to 1807, when he resigned his post to assume the position of governor. He was a good friend of his correspondent, Elbridge Gerry. Gerry served in the Continental Congress and was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. He was an early and vigorous advocate of American Independence, and played a crucial role in the formation of the new United States government, insisting on a bill of rights being added to the new Constitution. His name is perhaps best remembered, however ignominiously, in connection with the term "gerrymandering." In his second term as governor of Massachusetts, Gerry redrew district lines to consolidate his party's control in the state senate. Though this was not necessarily a new practice, the name stuck. Gerry ran on the ticket with President Madison in 1812, for Madison's second term as President, and died in office in November 1814. Espousing a very New England view of the situation, Sullivan imparts his thoughts on the subject of national character to his friend, emphasizing the ways in which frugality as a national trait will elevate America's position on the world stage. He advocates legislating the expense and extravagance of the President's table, in order to set a precedent that will filter down to the state leaders, &c., and be passed down as an example to all of the nation's future leaders. The letter reads, in part: "My dear Gerry, You will permit me to trouble you with one thought on public measures, which though unimportant in your eye, yet your candour & friendship will pardon the intrusion. I cannot but wish, however unfashionable I may be in it, that our national character (for one we must have) may be marked by industry and oeconomy [sic]. I wish it might be said to the traveller who shall be on his way to America, 'You will find then an hospitable people, but men who uniformly attend to the various calls of industry, & while their tables are crowned with plenty, they are governed in their expenses by the rules of frugality. Their state of life is such as affords the most happy presage of their young republic being lasting as the constitution of it is pure.' A character like this would raise us in the estimation of foreigners, would fix our private and establish our public credit among the nations of the world; it would yield us an infinite advantage over what we can possibly obtain in our present carreer [sic] of mimicking fops, and men of fortune in old countries. "I am persuaded that it is in the power of Congress immediately to lay such a foundation for table frugality throughout the union as will not be shaken for a long time yet to come. You have a gentleman at the head of the federal table whom I conceive to be not only a theoretic but a practical whig and in all instances a firm patriot. Should Congress now advise or direct that his table should be spread in a mode suitable to the state and situation of a young republic, that it should bare [sic] enough for the surrounding guests without groaning under an immense weight or the wasting surplusage, which we generally see at what are called polite tables, it would be an example aided by the strength of superior opinion while all the federal officers and all the governors of the separate states would hand it down with obligations to the people. It would very soon be rendered disrepu

        BIBLIORUM SACRORUM VULGATAE VERSIONIS EDITIO

Parisiis: Excudebat Fr. Amb. Didot, 1785. n. Hardcover. Ellic Howe's Copy in Striking, Tall Red Morocco. 318 x 235 mm (12 1/2 x 9 1/4").Two volumes. SUPERB CRIMSON STRAIGHT-GRAIN MOROCCO BY BOZERIAN, covers with distinctive wide frame incorporating arches, Grecian urns, floral garlands and sunburst cornerpieces, the outer and inner edges of the frame flanked by thick and thin gilt rules and cresting and floral rolls; double raised bands separated by a gilt-tooled inlaid strip of black morocco, spines densely gilt in compartments filled with much foliage and many flowers against a stippled background, turn-ins with interlacing flame roll, light green glazed endpapers, all edges gilt. Front pastedowns with wood-engraved bookplate of Ellic Howe and with faint evidence of earlier bookplate removal; verso of rear flyleaf with small engraved heraldic book label. Bibelsammlung der Württembergischen Landesbibliothek I, D1639. Cf. Darlow & Moule 6263. Half a dozen or so faint scratches or small spots to boards, a little vague crinkling to spine, occasional mild browning or small marginal spots, a couple of gatherings in second volume with faint overall browning, otherwise an excellent copy internally, clean and smooth with generous margins, and THE ELEGANT BINDINGS IN FINE CONDITION, especially lustrous and with only insignificant wear. Although unsigned, these handsome volumes are almost certainly Bozerian work; they not only typify the refined bindings executed by both the elder Bozerian and Bozerian le jeune during the last decade of the 18th and first two decades of the 19th century, but they also share tools with other bindings known to have been executed by one Bozerian or the other. Particularly characteristic are the spine panels featuring intricate gilt elaboration spreading out from a center point (in this case a five-petaled flower). The urn and garland roll used on the covers is identical to that on a binding from the Charles Ramsden collection (British Library shelfmark c156k1) signed by Bozerian. This roll also appears on a signed red straight-grain morocco binding done for C. M. de Talleyrand-Périgord (De Ricci, Schiff Collection 170). The Schiff binding also uses the same flame roll tool for the turn-ins, and (like our volumes) items 161-63 by Bozerian senior in the Schiff collection all show the same distinctive strip of dark morocco inlaid between raised bands and decorated with a chain-pattern roll-tool. Our edition of the Vulgate was printed by François-Ambroise Didot (1730-1804), son of the founder of the prestigious Didot printing house. François-Ambroise introduced several innovations in type design (for example, making the contrast between thick and thin letters more noticeable); he improved punch cutting and mold making; and he introduced the practice of distinguishing types by their point size (12-point type, 36-point type, etc.). The present work was printed on the highly finished wove paper Didot introduced in 1780, a stock similar to that used by Baskerville. Former owner Ellic Howe (1910-91) was a professional printer who wrote a number of works on typography. In 1982, he revealed that he had been the director of Britain's forgery operations during World War II, charged with preparing false documents for agents being sent behind enemy lines.

Johann Samuel Traugott Gehler (1751-1795) - Tiberius Cavallo (1749-1809), "the son of a Neapolitan physician, did his scientific work in England, where he settled in 1771 intending to acquire some experience in business. He apparently put aside his plans on becoming acquainted with some amateur English physicists, particularly William Henley, who introduced him to experimental philosophy and encouraged him in its pursuit. He became a fellow of the Royal Society in 1779... Cavallo's first studies (1775-1776) concerned atmospheric electricity, which he explored with Franklin kites and with improved detectors of his own invention, fashioned after Canton's pith-ball electroscope- Although little came of his investigations (beyond the intelligence that rain often carries negative charge), they required a course of self-instruction that culminated in Cavallo's most important work, "A Complete Treatise on Electricity in Theory and Practice" (1777). ... An excellent compendium, the Treatise served the needs of both the neophyte and the initiate, who found in its appendixes valuable details about medical electricity; about Beccaria's obscure theories; and about Cavallo's forte, the design and operation of electrostatic instruments. - With the publication of the 'Complete Treatise' Cavallo switched his attention to the physics of the atmosphere and to the constitution of "permanently elastic fluids". Again his strengths appeared in instrumentation - an improved air pump and a modified eudiometer - and in smoothing the way for others. This time his course of self-instruction, 'A Treatise on the Nature and Properties of Air and Other Permanently Elastic Fluids' (1781), was a judicious examination of contemporary work, particularly Priestley's, presented from a non dogmatic phlogistic point of view. He always retained a lively interest in pneumatic physics and chemistry, whose applications to ballooning and to medicine became subjects of two later books." J.L.Heilbron, DSB III, p.153f.

        La Consolation de L'Absence

1785. Engraving. Proof before dedication, with artist names and title but before dedication and publication line added and title space darkened. Two collectors marks on verso of sheet. In excellent condition with the exception of some limited foxing. Crease on right edge of sheet. Image size: 13 13/16 x 9 3/4 inches. A rare proof impression of this stunning boudoir scene after a miniature by Nicolas Lavreince. Genre painting came to France when the Academy admitted Watteau's "The Pilgrimage to Cythera" in 1717. From that point on a fashion for decorative genre subjects swept the country, influencing an entire generation of French artists. This craze did not subside until after the onset of the Revolution when the frivolous tastes of the aristocratic elite were dispelled and a more sober era descended upon French art. This extremely well executed print by Nicolas de Launay is after a painting by the celebrated Swedish miniaturist Nicolas Lavreince, who built his reputation with paintings of intimate boudoir scenes. In this scene, an elegantly dressed woman seated on a settee in a lavish boudoir gazes longingly at a miniature of her lover, and holds a love letter in the other hand. On the wall above, in an oval portrait, Cupid aims his arrow, though she is already clearly his victim. A little toy dog plays in the foreground, unaware of the sighs and sorrow. From the collection of Frederic R. Halsey, a famous New York print collector, who was active during the latter part of the 19th century. (Lugt 1308). Also from the collection of Cortland Field Bishop (1870-1935) a New York collector, who had a renowned collection of French eighteenth-century prints. (Lugt 2770 b) Nevill, French Prints of the Eighteenth Century p. 169; Lugt, Les Marques de Collections 1308; Lugt, Les Marques de Collections, (Supplement) 2770 b.

Vaugondy, Robert, Paris 1785 - Important early post-revolutionary map and one of the most desirable maps in terms of the earliest use of United States.McCorkle postulates that there may be an earlier state to this map. BIBLIORUM SACRORUM VULGATAE VERSIONIS EDITIO

Parisiis: Excudebat Fr. Amb. Didot, 1785. n. Hardcover. Ellic Howe's Copy in Striking, Tall Red Morocco. 318 x 235 mm (12 1/2 x 9 1/4"). Two volumes.

She never married, although she was the mother of three children." ODNB

Uranoscopus Scaber. The Star Gazer. Plate CLXIII.

Berlin 1785-97 - Mounted size: 530 x 370 mm. Fine condition. Copper engraving. Original colour. Marcus Éliéser Bloch was born in 1723 in Anspach. He spent the earlier part of his career as a physician, studying intestinal worms. It was not until the age of 57, that Bloch turned to the study of fish, and set himself the task of providing full descriptions and illustrations of the species known to him. His first work focused on German fish and was entirely original, based on his own observations, reliable and thorough. His study of foreign fishes, however, was based on the works of others. Thus it was subject to many of the misconceptions that filtered through the great body of travel literature during the 18th century - presenting a range of illustrations with exacting accuracy on one hand or enticing imagination on the other. Bloch worked with a number of artists. Bloch's work is much sought after, and has endured to the extent that there are several editions of his work still in print today.
