1783. "Of what I have more and more sacred ever, I will not believe in the lessons of the followers of a god who think themselves allowed to outrage the creature to honor the creator. ""... if men refuse me their justice, there will always be ways for me to do it. She also has eyes - [...], it only takes money to find rogues ... "Autographed letter from the Marquis de Sade addressed to his wife. Four pages on a double sheet, written in a fine and close handwriting.Several underlining of Sade's hand.Address of Madame de Sade in Paris on half the fourth page.Small wetting at the foot of the sheet, not disturbing the reading. An important letter in which the two main themes of Sadian philosophy are exposed: radical anti-clericalism and fantasized violence.Without a date, this letter was written, in September 1783, during the incarceration of Sade at Vincennes, according to Jean-Jacques Pauvert ( Sade living ).Madame de Sade, whose Parisian address appears on the fourth page, is then at the Sainte-Aure convent where she enjoys a relative tranquility suffering from many evils which her husband inquires ( "I beg you, Write I am worried about your health " ). But very soon Sade drifts towards his own pains; "If you took any interest in me, I would say that from four o'clock until midnight these unhappy eyes continue to make me suffer horribly . " Eye suffering is a recurring theme in Sade's biography, as Maurice Levert points out: "Both in Vincennes and in the Bastille, Sade will be followed by the most famous oculists of the time, the Grandjean brothers, whose eldest Henri is Surgeon-oculist of the king, and Demours Son. ( Living Sade , p.337). In spite of the numerous ointments and advice (especially that of practicing knitting!), The Marquis fears more than anything to become blind; It will almost completely lose the use of one eye between January and July 1783.This letter also informs us about the conditions of life of the Marquis and in particular about the authorizations granted to him, in particular that of correspondence with his family. Sade complains of a "rascal who thinks he is greater than Alexander , and deeper than Licurgue (sic)" , which, as can easily be guessed, is none other than the commissioner Le Noir who authorizes the Marquis , Outings, visits and correspondence activities. Again, the sadistic irony that appears here: "Trying to annihilate the interest that a husband takes in his wife is one of the most sublime political that ever existed, there is a spirit of self- An angel, a marvelous conduct, as in great things we recognize great men "We see in this letter the amorous ritual of correspondence which necessarily passes through the reproach of indifference ( "... I beg you if it is in your strength not to write to me, send to the officers of the house a little Word [...] this semi proof of your existence [...] reassure me at least a little " ) mixed with domestic concerns: " you have a pretext, I have provided you expressly for two months, Have a big package packed to get you through. "This is a book (which ...?). Indeed, Sade's other activity, despite his poor view, is to write or rework his works, which he later transmits to his wife, Abbé Amblet or La Jeunesse pour correction. It is precisely this literary exchange: "This packet contains 6 pieces of stomach ... They envelop my last work which I also very much heart to make you pass and for La Jeunesse to put it in the net and to be able That I can not do as long as the old work is still in my hands and I would like to work, I have a plan that is running me in the brain and that it is absolutely necessary to accomplish . We must repair the lost time, I am awakened every day at five in the morning "But it is the diatribes against religion that make all the salt of this letter imprinted with the libertarian spirit of the Marquis. It thus evokes the proselytizing attempts of the prison administration:"It is like that of the chapel whose heads are being slaughtered every day, and in writing, and for not having added faith to the formidable mysteries of the religion of Christ, it will be split every day for six months with a chapel And you will see how it will make him believe that god and bread are the same thing. This is how the anti-papists were converted in the Cevennes. As there is not yet 80 years each must remember how successful it is. The fact of invoking the Camisards here is not insignificant for the Marquis, and we find in the list of works which he demanded from his wife in 1781, the work of Antoine Court, Histoire des troubles des Cévennes, Or the War of the Camisards during the reign of Louis the Great (1760). He will also use an episode of this war for his Juliet (1800), recounting the flogging of the young Cévennes who refused to convert to Catholicism.Even more virulent, the following passage echoes his famous pamphlet, Dialogue between a Priest and a Moribund , written secretly here the year before:"Oh no no, not on what I have more and more sacred ever, I will not believe in the lessons of the followers of a god who think themselves allowed to outrage the creature to honor the creator. Build your unholy chapels; Adore your detestable pagan idols. But as long as you infringe for all this the most sacred laws of nature, remember that you will force me only to hate and despise you. "According to Pauvert, this tirade will undoubtedly contribute to the detention of the Marquis in spite of the visit on December 7, 1783, of Minister Breteuil, who favored the abolition of letters of cachet: "Under a king who grants reforms but does not joke Not when it comes to morality, religion and public order '(Maurice de La Fuye), the minister of his house can not afford to treat too brutally under these legs these three pillars of the society. ". There is no doubt that this true demonstration of the strength of the anti-clerical philosophy, the future spearhead of the revolutionaries, is for the moment still audacious. If the Dialogue inspires this libertarian surge, the last part of the letter announces the advent of a still more radical Sade - the one hundred and twenty days of Sodom - through the fantasized violence of the tortures of which he threatens his mother-in-law:"But patience, if men refuse me their justice, there will always be ways for me to do it. She also has eyes - and I will also have powder , it only takes money to find rogues, she proves it to me and I will use it. "Provenance: archives of the family. s.l. (Vincennes) s.d. It is the second (and usual) issue of the last edition to use the original woodblocks of the Fabrica and Epitome prior to the Bremer Presse edition of 1934-35. The blocks were destroyed in the bombing of Munich during World War II. Vesalius' acclaimed anatomy book is considered a milestone in anatomic book art. For a long time, authorship of the illustrations was unknown. Today, it is regarded certain that they were made by the Dutchman and student of Titian, Jan Stephan van Calcar. For the purpose of printing, the woodcut stocks were transported from Venice to Basel. As of 1706, they had been in possession of the printer Andreas Maschenbauer in Augsburg. Half a century later the plates went into ownership of the Bavarian physician Johann Anton von Wolter, who intended to supply the illustrations with German text in order to "have a useful anatomy book for Bavarian surgeons, which, illustrated with such exquisite figures, would be a perfect guideline." In order to put this plan into practice, Heinrich Palmaz Leveling, a professor for anatomy at the Bavarian State University in Ingolstadt, was eventually commissioned. Leveling faced the challenge to endorse the more than 200 years old anatomic illustrations with a German text that was supposed to reflect latest anatomic knowledge. He much drew upon the 'Abhandlung von dem Bau und der Zergliederung des menschlichen Leibes' published by the anatomist Jakob Winslow (1669-1760) in 1754. The biggest challenge for Leveling presumably was to employ German terminology exclusively, that is why he added a 'Verzeichnis der gemeinsten, in diesem Werke vorkommenden Kunstwörter' (glossary of terms) in which he translated every Latin term into German. The original woodblocks remained in possession of the Bavarian State University and came via Landshut to Munich, where they were printed 1934 in a bibliophile edition with Latin text for the last time. Ten years later, all woodblocks burned in an air raid over Munich. (Source: Ingolstadt, Medizin-Historisches Museum). Some copies contain either a short list of subscribers issued with the first fascicle or a longer list issued with the last (as here). Very Good.

Principles of the Doctrine of Life-Annuities

1783. First Edition . MASERES, Francis. The Principles of the Doctrine of Life-Annuities; Explained in a Familiar Manner, So As to Be Intelligible to Persons Not Acquainted with the Doctrine of Chances; and Accompanied with a Variety of New Tables of the Values of Such Annuities at Several Different Rates of Interest, Both for Single Lives and Two Joint Lives, Accurately Computed from Observations. London: Printed for B. White, 1783. Folio (9-1/2 by 12 inches), contemporary blue and brown paper boards expertly respined with original spine laid down, uncut and partially unopened. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. $4200.Rare first edition of this important early treatise on life annuities, with dozens of tables and mathematical formulas, in contemporary boards. The author of this work, Londoner Francis Maseres, began his career as a member of the bar before quickly moving into political life. In March of 1766, he was appointed attorney general of the new British Province of Canada, which had been ceded by France through the Treaty of Paris in 1763. Maseres held the appointment until 1769 when he returned to London and became deeply involved in the American colonies, arguing that they should be allowed representation in the House of Commons. After the Revolutionary War, Maseres turned his attention back to Quebec, attempting to prevent a similar event in Canada. Maseres was known as a skilled and thoughtful writer, who produced dozens of works during his lifetime. “Priestley wrote of Maseres that his works in mathematics are ‘original and excellent” (Rutt, Life and Corresp. of Priestley, ii. 490 cited in DNB). He was equally engaged with issues of politics and social reform. This book, one of his best, combines all three subjects. It offers useful mathematically based charts and tables for the setting up and valuation of life annuities, which were used in the late 18th century as a primary form of retirement income and/or insurance. It remains useful today as a historical artifact of the industry and for its still relevant insights into a business that continues to thrive. This book is exceptionally rare; no copies have sold at auction in nearly 30 years. Only a few spots of foxing to interior, light rubbing and soiling to binding. An extremely good copy.

D.J. Changuion & P. den Hengst, Amsterdam 1783 - Not paginated. Double-page engraved city plan and 102 double-page engraved views and cityscapes. 2 volumes. 27+36 sheets of text (mostly after Wagenaar's Geschiedenis van Amsterdam). *Nijhoff/Van Hattum 11. Rare first edition of these famous townscapes of Amsterdam by the artist and art dealer Pierre Fouquet Jr. (1729-1800), bound, as usual, in two volumes with two newly added unnumbered plates. Originally the plates were published separately, the first series of 10 townscapes having been issued in 1760-61 engraved by Paul van Liender and Simon Fokke after the drawings by the well-known engraver of town- and landscapes Jan de Beyer (plates nr. 4, 10, 12, 15, 45, 50, 61, 72, 52-3), followed in 1764-68 by a series of 12 scapes by Caspar Philips Jacobsz. (plates nr. 20, 22, 17-9, 21, 9, 23-4, 8, 73, 75), who also engraved the plates after J. de Vlaaming in 1768-69 (plates 27,14). The latest dated plate is from 1771 by C. Philips Jacobsz. (plate 25). 73 plates are undated, 59 of which are by the elusive H. Schoute who never dated his engravings and seldom signed them. Other artist who contributed to the Atlas are C. Bogerts (after H. (not N.) Keun; plate 4*), J. van der Schley after P.R. van Dijk (plate 69-70) and Coppier and Simon Fokke after six more drawings by Jan de Beyer who cooperated during more than six years. Shortly after 1778 the plates were re-issued in an oblong book with a map of Amsterdam and contents, but without text, under the title "Afbeeldingen van de wyd-vermaarde koopstad Amsterdam". Contemporary half calf with speckled marbled boards, 6 raised bands to the spine, a gilt-lettered title ticket. Cover condition: good: spine-ends worn; both vols. lack the second letterpiece; upper joint 2nd vol. starting. Inside condition: very good: seven plates browned (I. no. 42, 17, 7, 12 and 15; II. no. 46 and 50); a few plates w. minimal imperfections (spotting, minimal (marg.) stains etc.).         The Village a Poem in Two Books.

London: J. Dodsley, 1783. Quarto, with half-title and final blank; in later drab boards. First edition of Crabbe's best poem, an unsentimental homage to English country life. It was the work that confirmed his reputation and promise.Written in stirring heroic couplets, the poem was an implicit protest against the enclosure of common land by landowners. Mistakenly regarded as nothing more than a grim cataloguing of the ills of rural life, the opening to the second book is apropos:'No longer truth, though shown in verse, disdain,But own the village life a life of pain;I too must yield, that oft amid these woesAre gleams of transient mirth and hours of sweet repose'. Text a little dusted, calf spine label defective but a good copy.

Torna lavorato in rilievo. Confine filetto Triple sulle copertine. Parte del titolo in marocchino rosso. Merletto interno and roll su turni. On y compte plusieurs chansons.
