Mi Josef Drugi, po Miloschi Bosjoj izebran Rimszki Czeszar [...] Da praichno Controbuczie Nameschanye [...].

[Vienna, ca. 1783].. Folio. (74) pp. With 2 leaves of plates. Unbound.. Very rare imperial document offering instructions on surveying in connection with the Josephinische Landesaufnahme. The work is written in Latinized Serbo-Croat, although far divorced from the modern form of that language. The Josephinische Landesaufnahme (Josephine Survey) was completed between 1763 and 1785 while Croatia was one of the last provinces surveyed, between 1783 and 1784. The present document gives examples of charts and tables to be used for recording census information, as well as two illustrations - one a charming depiction of the correct method for measuring the height of hills using a series of poles. - Edges and corners somewhat ragged but no loss to text or plates. Light staining to plates.

- HUNTER/MACALPINE 559: "The world's first psychiatric journal." - KREUTER II, 987.

Elements of Jurisprudence, Treated of in the Preliminary Part of a...

1783. "The Complement of Sir W. Blackstone's Commentaries" Wooddeson, Richard [1745-1822]. Elements of Jurisprudence, Treated of in the Preliminary Part of a Course of Lectures on the Laws of England. London: Printed for T. Payne and Son, at the Mews Gate, 1783. [iv], 118 pp. Quarto (10-1/2" x 8-1/2"). Contemporary calf, blind fillets to boards, lettering piece and blind fillets to spine. Some rubbing to extremities, corners bumped and somewhat worn, front board just beginning to separate but secure, rear joint starting. Two early armorial bookplates (of Henry C. Compton Esq. Manor House, Lyndhurst, and Scrope Berdmore, S.T.P. Coll. Mert. Custos, 1790) to front pastedown. Offsetting to endleaves, interior otherwise fresh. A nice copy. * First and only London edition. Wooddeson was elected a Vinerian Scholar in 1766, became a Vinerian Fellow in 1776 and was Vinerian Professor from 1777 to 1793. He was steeped in Blackstone's work, and he strove to supplement it. "Dr. Wooddeson's Lectures form, in a measure, the complement of Sir W. Blackstone's Commentaries, for he supplies some deficiencies in the production of his predecessor, and treats more in detail, some topics, but slightly noticed by him. Though of acknowledged merit, as to learning, method of arrangement, and accuracy of rules, they do not seem to have attained so great a reputation as their real worth entitles them to. In point of style, and beauty of narration, they follow the Commentaries, haud non passibus auquis" (Marvin). Holdsworth describes each chapter in detail and calls this work a very useful book on legal theory. This book had a second edition published in Dublin in 1792. Marvin, Legal Bibliography (1847) 745. In essence, the Violinschule draws on the Italian method and Tartini in particular, although the historical chapters show Mozart's acquaintance with a broad range of music theory, from Glarean on... The work... represents the source closest to Mozart and is the most valuable guide to the musical and aesthetic education of the younger composer."

1783. Paris, chez l'auteur/ Didot le jeune/ Poisson, 1783-1784 (-1786). 3 volumes in 26 (of 27) parts. Folio (420 x 275mm). With 310 (of 320) fine handcoloured engraved plates. Original printed wrappers, the first 10 parts comprising volume one, in a contemporary portfolio. First and only edition of this noted rarity. The prospectus of the work announced 200 copies, of which 100 handcoloured, probably far fewer copies were produced. Our copy does not include fasc. 22. The only complete copy we could trace was the Plesh copy which was sold in 1975. The de Belder copy which was sold at Sotheby's 27 April 1987, lot 21 (mis-catalogued), made Pounds 13,200 and lacked fasc. 26 and 28 and contained 300 plates. It is one of the most bizarre flower books and reflects the intellectual optimism of the Enlightenment and the belief in the possiblity of universal knowledge. Bergeret invented a system of naming plants which would contain all the essential knowledge about their class, family, genus, species as well as descriptive features, contained in a single name. He assigned letters of the alphabet to characters of each plant concerned. This 'simple' mnemonic system, he believed, would establish a universal nomenclature and allow anyone, without recourse to botanical texts, to name any plant in the world. As an example of his nomenclature, Plantago Major, L. becomes GIQGYABIAHUQZEZ etc. "These are formulae and cannot be considered as names under the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature" (Stafleu). Fortunately Bergeret illustrated his work, the plates are attractive and several of them involve elementary colour printing, being printed with red, green and brown inks and finished by hand. Bergeret was surgeon to the brother of Louis XVI, who eventually became Louis XVIII. "In all fairness, it must be added that each species treated... was skillfully and fully described, and Bergeret's illustrations were exceptionally good"(Williams. Botanophilia in eighteenth century France p. 112). Two continuations of this rare work appeared one in 1786 and the other one in 1789. The title calls for 57 figures but there are 58 numbered figures, many with abc etc numbers. An interesting association copy with the signature of Secretan, famous Swiss mycologist, on free endpaper. With gold ink names added to figures on the plates most probably by Secretan. Old fold strengthened on verso of plates. Schliemann 62; Stafleu & Cowan 345..

Observations on the Passage to India through Egypt,

London: for W. Faden, J. Robson, and R. Sewell, , 1783. and across the Great Desert; with Occasional Remarks on the adjacent Countries, and also Sketches of the different Routes: By … Colonel in the Services of the Hon. East India Company. Quarto (250 × 197 mm). Attractive recent half calf on marbled boards to style by Trevor Lloyd, red morocco label, urn device gilt to the compartments. 2 engraved folding maps. List of errata verso of dedication leaf struck through and the listed errors corrected in ink in a contemporary hand, lightly browned, some spotting, but overall a very good copy. First edition. Capper was educated at Harrow and joined the army of the East India Company "in His Majesty's Train of Artillery in the East Indies, first as a soldier cadet and later as an officer. He was then for a while a free merchant in Bengal before becoming in 1768 a captain in the Madras army and in 1769 senior writer for the presidency of Bengal … [later] appointed the East India Company's commissary-general upon the coast of Coromandel" (ODNB). In early 1777 he was sent home with despatches, remaining in England until the autumn of 1778 when, "to explore the feasibility of opening a new channel for transmitting intelligence between Europe and India, he returned to Madras by way of Aleppo, the Arabian desert, and Basrah." The present work contains details of his journey from India to England in early 1777, via Ceylon and Suez, and his return journey in 1778-9. Given more or less in journal form, it is full of fascinating details of local life, offering numerous hints for the traveller in the region. As was so often the case, Capper felt himself badly treated by John Company, issuing a lengthy memorial detailing the abuses of the company's lax and corrupt civilian management in India. "Despite this he resumed his career in India in 1785, when he became comptroller-general of the army and fortification accompts on the coast of Coromandel, charged with reducing expenditure in Madras. He resigned in 1791 and returned to Britain. The East India Company twice thereafter refused him a pension." He later made a name for himself as a meteorologist, and as a local philanthropist in south Wales where he settled.

HISTOIRE RAISONÉE DES OPÉRATIONS MILITAIRES ET POLITIQUES DE LA DERNIÈRE GUERRE, SUIVIE D'OBSERVATIONS SUR LA RÉVOLUTION QUI EST ARRIVÉE DANS LES MOEURS & SUR CELLE QUI EST SUR LE POINT D'ARRIVER DANS LA CONSTITUTION D'ANGLETERRE.

Liege. 1783. - xii,235,[1]pp. Without the ten page supplement, which is not always present. Half title. Handsomely bound in contemporary French mottled calf, raised bands, spine richly gilt, gilt morocco label. Light shelf wear. Quite clean internally. A near fine copy. In a cloth chemise and slipcase, gilt leather label. A firsthand account of the Revolution, by a little- known but fascinating French soldier of fortune who fought for the British. A disputatious and critical man, Joly de St. Valier condemns the British conduct of the war, especially in naval matters, but also heaps some scorn on the French and De Grasse. The ten-page supplement, not included here, was issued separately and is found in only a few copies of the work. It was likely printed later, and continues Joly's war of words with Sir Joseph Yorke, former British Ambassador at the Hague, who was quite involved in British naval strategy during the war. A very rare work on the market, with much important firsthand material on the military history of the American Revolution. The Streeter copy realized $450 in 1967. SABIN 36428. HOWES J182, "aa."         Copper Engraved View of Novgorod] Vue de la Ville de Novogorod.

Paris 1783 - [Paris, 1783]. Copper engraving ca. 21,5x32 cm (ca. 8 ¾ x 12 ½ in). Dessine par Mr. le Chr. De Lespinasse, Dirigé par Neé, Gravé par Niquet. A near fine print. Plate 13 from the Atlas to Nicolas Le Clerc's "Histoire Physique, Morale, Civile et Politique de la Russie Ancienne" (Paris and Versailles: Froullé and Blaizot, 1783-1794; 6 vols. and atlas). Engraved by Claud Niquet under guidance of François Denis Neé, the view shows a spectacular panorama of Novgorod laying on the banks of the Volkhov River, with the walls and ramparts of the Novgorod Kremlin and numerous churches; fishermen and fishing boats are seen in the foreground. "The atlas volume to Le Clerc's great work is particularly notable for its fine panoramic views of towns and palaces by Auvray, Fessard, Niquet and Née after Louis-Nicolas de Lespinasse. Le Clerc first visited Russia in his profession as doctor in 1759, and in 1769 he received several important appointments in Moscow, giving him the opportunity to correlate many rare and almost unknown historical sources. The publication of this work prompted Catherine II to commission a riposte: Ivan Nikitich Boltin's 2 volume Notes on the History of Ancient and Modern Russia (St. Petersburg, 1788)" (Christie's); Brunet III, 916; Cohen-de Ricci 613.

S.n. 1783 - - S.n., A Paris _1783, Pet. in Folio (23x37,5cm), iv, ix, 162 (2) (2) 269p., relié. Marine

Paris., 1783; 1786; 1787.. b/w engraved plates, many double page or folding. This is the “Marine” section of Pancoucke’s massive 200-plus volume encyclopedia, which itself was an expanded version of Diderot’s 27 volume effort. It includes a plate volume of 175 engravings showing all phases of marine technology - from cartography to rope making. The three text volumes are arranged alphabetically by topic, and discuss such things as shipbuilding, docks, waterfront fortifications, flags, sails, signaling methods, naval strategy, and anchor forging. These were products of the Enlightenment - attempts to categorize and collect all knowledge. As such, Pancoucke’s Encyclopédie Méthodique is an up to date compendium of everything that was known about marine technology in 1780. It is of great historical value. This set is in brilliant condition, with pages crisp. clean and untrimmed, and engravings sharp and clean, with no foxing or offsetting. Bound in 19th century half calf over marbled boards.

Paris: : Chez l’auteur,, 1783.. Full Calf. Very Good. 4to (27.0 x 20.5 cm), Contemporary decorative calf with red morocco label. Collation: [6] pp. + 6 [i.e. 5], 6, 6, 10 (folded) plates. The book is bound in a decorative, mottled calf French binding of the period. The spine has raised bands and floral gilt decorations in panels, with red morocco label in upper panel. The Ends of spines and corners show some wear. There is worming spot on front cover near fore edge with light scuffing to boards, rubbed corners. All of the plates are hand colored in a fine contemporary hand and paper repair to the folding plates along the spine. There are some small stains on a few plates near the tab, affecting the borders. The first 6 pages contain 4 engraved pages of text. The twenty-seven (27) engraved plates depict garden designs of English and Chinese style with a scale of garden designs are hand colored. This is the second volume of 4 in a series of works, which include the author’s Recueil de jardinage (1783), and, Recueil de jardins. Anglos-chinois (1787). The missing first plate is absent in all extant library copies, indicating it was not bound in all copies, evidenced by an uncolored first plate in the copy of the book in the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris. & The engraved colored plates in the three “Cayer” of 17 plates are excellent examples of English and Chinese gardens and give detail designs of gardens while the remaining 10 folding plates provide “Dispositions” of gardens with with buildings or “Batiments” and other garden structures. Penseron was a student of Jacques Francois Blondel, one of France’s great architects. Penseron designed and engraved all the plates which illustrate his mastery of engraving and beautiful design and coloring to represent the rich and wonderful survey of gardening in France in the second half of the 18th century when English and Chinese gardens were en vogue. Any copy of Panseron’s excellent treatise on English and Chinese garden design is very scarce. (Only a few libraries have this 2nd volume and the Institut national d'histoire de l'art. Collections Jacques Doucet. Bibliothèque. Paris has the complete series of 4 volumes) Excellent hand colored engravings of proposed garden designs by Panseron

Military orders. History of France.

        Observations on Emetic Tartar

[Wotton-under-Edge: J. Bence, 1783?]. First edition, first issue, 8vo, 16pp., Signature: (A8 ) printed on recto only, first leaf signed A, drop-head title, expertly bound in period style half half, within a custom-made drop-box. An unrecorded first issue of Jenner's first publication. This first issue is not noted in LeFanu's Bibliography of Edward Jenner, nor are any copies held by libraries worldwide. However, Copac does list a single copy (this present copy) but without assigning any authorship to Jenner. A comparison with the "Cursory Observations on Emetic Tartar", previously thought to be the first edition (see LeFanu, 3), reveals many corrections and additional text have been added to the "Cursory". Also, on comparing the two issues it is clear from the type setting that both were printed by J. Bence of Wotton-under-Edge. "Jenner's first pamphlet, without date or author's name, was printed by the bookseller at Wootton-under-Edge. He was dissatisfied with the preparations of some medicines in common use and made experiments, in particular to obtain a preparation of emetic tartar which would be 'regular in strength and uniform in operation'. The pamphlet was printed in the autumn of 1783, for Hunter acknowledged it in November 'I received your little publication with the Tart. Emet. I have a great deal to say about it... I approve of it much and will do all in my power to promote the sale... I would desire you to burn your book, for you will have all the world making it', and he wrote again to the same purpose a month or two later. Jenner preferred to make his work freely available. He continued to experiment and Hunter wrote to him in May 1784 'I wish you would draw out the process for making the tartar emetic. The physicians that I have given it to speak well of it as a more certain medicine than the other', and he suggested that Jenner should send an account of the process to his Society for the Improvement of Medical and Chirurgical Knowledge. Jenner accordingly described his method of obtaining pure emetic tartar crystals; this paper, with his letter of 5 February, was read to the Society on 4 June 1784 but not published until 1793. Jenner also experimented from about 1790 with the application of emetic tartar ointment as a counterirritant, and published an account of his results in 1822." (LaFanu). This first issue is of the highest rarity, with no other copy being located. Of the 'Cursory' issue ESTC and Copac locates just 3 copies (British Library, John Rylands & U. S. National Library of Medicine), none added by OCLC. LaFanu, A Bibliography of Edward Jenner, 1985. 3.

Recueil de jardins anglois et chinois. Recueil de jardinage composé par le Sr. Panseron, Architecte, Professeur d’Architecture, Ancien Professeur de Dessin à l’Ecole Royale Militaire et cydevant Inspecteur des Batimens de S.A.S. Mrg. le Prince de Conti

Chez lauteur Paris: : Chez l’auteur,, 1783.. Full Calf. The engraved colored plates in the three “Cayer” of 17 plates are excellent examples of English and Chinese gardens and give detail designs of gardens while the remaining 10 folding plates provide “Dispositions” of gardens with with buildings or “Batiments” and other garden structures.
