A Journal of Captain Cook's Last Voyage to the Pacific Ocean,

Hartford: Nathaniel Patten,, 1783. and in quest of a North-West Passage, between Asia & America; performed in the years 1776, 1777, 1778, and 1779. Illustrated with a chart, shewing the tracts of the ships employed in this expedition. Fully narrated from the original MS. Octavo (173 x 114 mm). Contemporary sheep, blind ruled spine, recent red morocco label. Housed in a custom-made green cloth chemise and green quarter morocco slipcase. Early ownership inscription (partially smudged) of "James Adams, Boston" in gutter of front free endpaper (also indistinctly across back cover); early correction of "contageous" to "contiguous" at p. 12. Some wear to extremities of binding, a few abrasions, small area of shallow worming on back cover, small work trail on front free endpaper and repair to top fore-corner, general light toning and signs of handling, some scattered old pale stains, short closed-tear into blank margin at foot of B1, yet a remarkably well-preserved copy. First edition of this notable Cook rarity — the first American account of Cook's third voyage, which preceded publication of the official (London) account by more than a year — presented here in an appealing plain trade binding of the period. "This was not only the first American book on the Northwest coast [of America], but also probably the first American book on Hawaii" (Streeter). Stab holes are visible at gatherings A4-K and Forbes notes that: "The book was first issued in parts with blue grey part wrappers as follows: Part I, pages 1-80 [as our copy]; Part II, pages 81-160; Part III, pages 161-208" and goes on to say that "not all copies were first issued thus in their entirety. Copies may in fact have only the first and second parts of the text, which show evidence of a part issue". This copy, like virtually all others, does not have the rare map and it is now accepted that it was not generally issued; a census of copies at auction with the map, drawn up by PBA Galleries in 2008, lists only three: George Brinley (1879), William C. Braislin (1927: "small portion of the map" only) and Thomas W. Streeter (1969). Another copy at auction in 2011 included "map corner [only]… most of map lacking". Connecticut-born John Ledyard (1751-1789), the self-styled "mad, romantic, dreaming Ledyard" - described by historian Jared Sparks on the title page of his 1828 biography as simply "The American Traveller" and characterised by Jefferson as a genius - joined Cook as a corporal of marines and "sailed with the expedition that left the Thames on July 12, 1776. At Nootka Sound [Vancouver Island], which was reached in March 1778, he began to picture the vast possibilities of the northwestern fur trade and resolved to enter it at the first opportunity. The return voyage, on which Cook was killed at the Hawaiian Islands, Feb. 14. 1779, brought him to London late in 1780. The American Revolution was still in progress, and refusing to serve against his countrymen, Ledyard remained in barracks for two years, and was then transferred to the North American station" (DAB). From there he fashioned his escape home, to Hartford, and wrote his recollections of his voyage with Cook. Ledyard clearly drew on John Rickman's "surreptitious and anonymous" (Beddie) Journal of James Cook's Last Voyage (London: E. Newbery, 1781), which "he relied on… for dates, distances, the courses of the vessels, and for other particulars serving to revive recollection" (Sparks p. 53) and sold the manuscript to the Hartford publisher Nathaniel Patten "for twenty guineas" (ibid.). A noted rarity in an unadorned but appealing period binding.

Frankfurt - Leipzig, [Barth], 1783. 2 Bde. XVIII + 2 n.n. + 404, 2 n.n. + 444 S. Priv. Hld. der Zeit. DEA. VD18 11164492. - Ebd. berieben, V. leimschattig, Besitzsign. a. V., etw. fleckig, stockfleckig, Gbrsp.

Neue verbess. Aufl. (Tl. 1) und Erstaufl. (Tl. 2). Mit Königl. Preuß. Freyheit. 2 Teile in einem Band gebunden. 8vo. (I:) Tb., 3 Bll. (Vorerinnerung), 3 Bll. Außer zu Mendelssohn unterhielt Dohm u. a. - Vgl. Fürst I, 210; Eichstädt 105f.; Borst 410 (kennt Tl. 2 nicht). Versand D: 2,00 EUR

26x21 cm.Bella rilegatura coeva in piena pelle con titoli e fregi in oro sui dorsi. Piccole mancanze e abrasioni in particolare in corrispondenza delle cerniere e delle cuffie. Abituali bruniture e fioriture all'interno.

An essay on landscape; or, on the means of improving and embellishing the country round our habitations. Translated from the French . . .

London: printed for J. Dodsley, Pall-Mall, M.DCC.LXXXIII [1783]. First (and only) Edition in English, translated from the French; considered the more valuable for its 55 page introduction by the translator. Small 8vo: [2],lv,[1],160pp, with copper-engraved frontispiece of the Ile des Peupliers. Nineteenth-century black calf flat spine ruled and lettered in gilt, marbled paper-covered boards, all edges untrimmed. Fine, clean, wide-margined copy. Adams, The French garden, 1500-1800, pp. 127-31. Siren, China and gardens of Europe of the eighteenth century, pp. 125-132. Oxford Companion to Gardens, p. 228. First published in Geneva, in 1777, as De La Composition des Paysages. The English translation was long (and is still widely) attributed to Daniel Malthus (father of the economist and demographer), but according to the ODNB, Thomas Malthus "firmly contradicted" the statement by an obituarist that his father had ever translated works from French. Patricia James (Population Malthus, pp. 77-78) suggests that the translator may have been Jane Dalton, a cousin of Daniel Malthus. Siren calls An Essay on Landscape a "manifesto in which the general principles of the English landscape gardeners are modified from the French point of view." In it, Girardin lays out the principles he followed, guided by the romantic ideals of Jean-Jacques Rousseau (his friend and mentor) and the landscape architect J. M. Morel, in the creation of his estate at Ermenoville, north of Paris, one of the first and finest examples of the French picaresque landscape garden. Girardin believed that gardens should be composed of series of scenes, like paintings, each designed to be experienced from a particular point of view at a specific time of day. "Some scenes should evoke solitude, others the pleasures of rural life, others the ideals of harmony and innocence." Temples, towers, altars, grottoes, rustic huts, a primitive bridge, and various other architectural monuments dotted the landscape at Ermenoville and were meant to evoke Rousseau's novel of sentiment, Julie, ou la nouvelle Héloïse. On the artificial island (Ile des Peupliers) in Ermenoville's artificial lake, Rousseau was entombed in a marble sarcophagus designed by Hubert Robert. N. B.         LUBOK: [IVAN’’ JAKOVLEVIC’’ KUREJŠA V’’ PREOBRAZENSKOJ BOL’NICI V’ MOSKVI / IVAN YAKOVLEVICH KUREYSHA V PREOBRAZHENSKAYA HOSPITAL IN MOSCOW].

Photolithography with original colour (Very Good, slightly age-toned, tiny tears in margins) 50 x 38 cm (19.7 x 15 inches). - [Russia, second half of the 19th century]. A rare 19th century photolithoraphed lubok (Russian popular broadside) with text in early cyrillic alphabet and with original colour shows a holy fool and a clairvoyant Ivan Yakovlevich Koreisha. - A rare originally coloured lubok (Russian broadside) shows a portrait of Ivan Yakovlevich Koreisha (1783–1861), a Russian holy fool, revered by many contemporaries as clairvoyant, soothsayer and blessed, but not canonized and not glorified by the Russian Orthodox Church. Extremely famous in the mid 19th century in the Central provinces of Russia, Ivan Koreisha was quickly forgotten after his death in 1861. In literature Koreisha was commemorated by Dostoyevsky, Ostrovsky, Leskov and Tolstoy, Bunin and others. Koreisha was hled in the Transfiguration (Preobrazhenskaya) hospital, today called Gilyarovsky hospital, founded 1808 as the first psychiatric hospital in Moscow. It was initially called a madhouse and had only eighty beds. The broadside was probably made still in the time of Koreisha's life. Lubki: Prints for the Russian Masses - Lubok (??????; Lubki, plural) were extremely important elements of Russian poplar visual culture from the second half of the 17th Century until the Russian Revolution. They are broadside prints usually featuring simple graphics, often accompanied by explanatory text. They focused on a variety of topics including, sacred religious icons, pre-Christian Pagan imagery, folk tales, satire, political propaganda, and humour (which sometimes crossed the line into the ribald), amongst other subjects. Importantly, lubki were amongst the only Russian prints targeted towards the lower and middle classes. They were cheaply produced, and thus affordable, featuring narratives generally comprehensible by images alone (for the benefit of the illiterate), while the text was usually written in vernacular language, accessible to everyman. In this sense, they were the forerunners of the comic strip. They were often sold at public markets, and were displayed on the walls of inns and private homes. In many cases, lubki were the only artworks affordable by the masses. The first lubki were produced as woodcuts during the second half of the 17thCentury, and while inspired by popular Western European prints, from the outset that assumed their own distinct Russian style and content. The earliest lubki followed the ‘Old Russian’ style, as see on church frescoes of the Upper Volga, and as popularized by the Koren Picture-Bible (1692-96). Tempera paints were often applied, in resplendent hues, lending flair to what were often simplistic, albeit beautiful, deigns. Russian scholar Alexander Boguslavsky observed that lubki are "a combination of Russian icon and manuscript painting traditions with the ideas and topics of western European woodcuts." While most lubki were privately printed, from the Napoleonic Wars onwards, they were issued by the Tsarist regime for propaganda purposes. During the 18th Century, the style and colouring were maintained, yet the diversity of subject matter increased, while the medium changed to engraving and etching. Many 19th Century lubki followed a traditional design and colouration scheme, yet were printed through modern techniques, such as lithography and photoithography. Printed on cheap paper, and hand coloured, such lubki are of an extraordinary appearance and tactile quality, unlike anything printed in Western Europe or America. Their archaic style, mixed with modern techniques, often leads uninitiated Westerners to mistakenly believe that they are 19th reproductions of much earlier prints. During the second half of the 19th and early 20th Centuries, the imperial government and patriotic printers sponsored ‘war lubki’, explaining military events and the exploits of the Russian armed forces. While some lubki-like prints were produced in Russia after the 1917 Revolution, Soviet propaganda poster and flyers largely replaced the genre. While many individual lu

Paris: Cailleau, 1783 - 2 volumes, duodecimo (164 x 94 mm). Contemporary tree sheep, gilt banded smooth spines, black and olive-green twin labels, yellow edges. A few wormholes to spines, two labels a little rubbed, volume I half-title a little ragged at fore-edge, a couple of gatherings lightly browned, paper flaw in blank margin at I1 volume II, a few leaves in volume II lightly dampstained at foot but a very good set with half-titles and an intriguing provenance: contemporary ownership inscription on half-titles of "delaRoche", a "capitaine d'infanterie". Folding hand-coloured engraved map of India, woodcut headpieces. First edition of this important eyewitness account of military service, during the Anglo-Mysore Wars, under Hyder Ali (1720-1782), sultan of Mysore; it was published the year after his death and an English translation appeared in editions at London and Dublin in 1784 and later in the 19th century. It was the basis for a version (1784-86) by Matthias Christian Sprengel, the most important German historian of India in the eighteenth century. "De La Tour's [sic] text was based on two central strategies: presenting a positive image of Haidar Ali and criticizing the British for both their conduct towards Haidar and other Indian rulers and towards the French, while at the same time defending the conduct of the French in India. In doing so, De La Tour consciously wrote against an existing image of Haidar Ali as a cruel Oriental despot and intolerant Muslim. Haidar Ali became known as a personality in Europe during the First Anglo-Mysore War of 1767-9 because of his surprising military success against the British that seemed to undermine existing perceptions of Indian military inferiority" (Chen Tzoref-Ashkenazi, German Soldiers in Colonial India, 2016, p. 146). The author, Maistre De La Tour, a French mercenary in Hyder's service, is described on the title page as "général de dix mille hommes de l'empire Mogol, & ci-devant commandant en chef l'artillerie de l'armée d'Ayder-Ali, & un corps de troupes Européennes, à la solde de ce Nabab" (a general of ten thousand men of the Mogul empire, and formerly commander-in-chief of the artillery of the army of Ayder Ali, and a corps of European troops in the pay of that Nabob). Decidedly uncommon, Copac locates copies at only three British and Irish institutional libraries (BL, Oxford, Manchester); OCLC adds below two dozen locations worldwide. A very appealing copy in a contemporary binding. [Attributes: First Edition]

Manuscript entitled 'A course of Lectures on Government By John Millar Esquire. 1786', Lectures 9-47, with, bound at the end, an 8-page printed curriculum: A Course of Lectures on Government; given annually in the University. Glasgow: 1783.

      - Manuscript notes of lectures by Adam Smith's pupil. According to an inscription dated 1855 on the front pastedown, these 'Notes [were] written by the late David Wemyss Esq. WS'. The printed curriculum is extremely rare: Gaskell reports editions printed in 1771, 1773, 1778, 1783 and 1787 (slightly different from year to year), but they are all known in one copy only. In ours, the individual lectures have been neatly cross-referenced to page numbers in the manuscript. 'John Millar was outstandingly successful as a law teacher. He was known as a profound and ingenious scholar, and students came from all quarters of Britain to hear his lectures. Many of his students later distinguished themselves as philosophers (for example, David Hume, himself a Professor of Scots law) or politicians (for example, James Maitland, 8th Earl of Lauderdale). He lectured not only on civil law (Institutes and Digest) but on Scottish law, English law and government. Many lecture notes taken by his students can still be found in Glasgow University Library and other libraries. His influence also extended beyond his law classes. It is well known, for example, that Jeffrey, Horner, Brougham and other contributors to the Edinburgh Review as well as James Mill were greatly stimulated by and learned much from Millar. Millar based his law courses on a philosophy derived from Smith’s Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759). His respect for Smith was very great: "I am happy to acknowledge the obligations I feel myself under to this illustrious philosopher, by having, at an early period of life, had the benefit of hearing his lectures on the History of Civil Society, and of enjoying his unreserved conversation on the same subject. The great Montesquieu pointed out the road. He was the Lord Bacon in this branch of Philosophy. Dr. Smith is the Newton"' (Dictionary of Eighteenth-Century British Philosophers, Thoemmes Press, 1999). 'Millar’s published works sprang from his teaching . An Historical View of the English Government (1787) was intended as a modern whiggish correction to Hume’s History of England . As with his intellectual master, Adam Smith, however, the full scope of Millar’s project disappeared from view because so much of the theoretical structure remained the privileged information of his students’ (ODNB).       1783 - England cedes East and West Florida to Spain. 1783. Madrid. 12mo. pp. 30-94, missing the preliminary articles, folding map. Wrappers, possibly contemporary. A fine copy, with wide margins, the map in excellent condition too. 1,200 $ First edition. One of the most significant treatises signed by the colonial powers of Spain and England, in which was established that England ceded Eastern West Florida to Spain in return for the Bahamas, and the navigation of the Belize and Hondo Rivers was made common to both nations. The terms are printed in Spanish and French. This copy preserves the folding map by Tomas Lopez of Belize. “The rare first edition, very fine copy. Text in both Spanish and French. By this treaty, Great Britain ceded East and West Florida to Spain in return for the Bahamas. It was also to have settled the controversy of jurisdiction in Belize (British Honduras) which had existed since British pirates first began to take timber there in 1638. The treaty allowed the British to log between the Wallis River (Belize) and Rio Hondo. Both countries had navigation rights, but the Spanish King retained sovereignty. A fine map of the area is included.” (Nebenzahl) “By this treaty England ceded East and West Florida to Spain in return for the Bahamas, and the navigation of the Belize and Hondo rivers was made common to both nations” (Sabin) Palau 339315.         An essay on landscape; or, on the means of improving and embellishing the country round our habitations. Translated from the French . .

printed for J. Dodsley, Pall-Mall, London 1783 - First (and only) Edition in English, translated from the French; considered the more valuable for its 55 page introduction by the translator. N. B.         A New Map of the Whole Continent of America, divided into North and South America and West Indies, with a Descriptive Account of the European Possessions, as Settled by the Definitive Treaty of Peace, Concluded at Paris, Feby. 10th, 1763, Compiled from Mr. D'Anville's Maps of that Continent, and Corrected in the Several Parts belonging to Great Britain, from the Original Materials of Governor Pownall, MP

Robert Sayer and John Bennett, London 1783 - Copper-engraved map, printed on four sheets joined as two, period hand-colouring in outline. Inset of the Arctic regions of North America, and including Greenland and Iceland. Table along the left side. Printing of a portion of the 1763 Treaty of Paris above the cartouche. Inset map of Arctic Circle, Iceland and Greenland. Unrecorded issue of Gibson's fascinating wall map of the Western hemisphere Unrecorded intermediate state: conforms to Stevens and Tree 3c, i.e. title, imprint, printing of Articles from the 1763 Treaty, etc., though the United States is shown with engraved dotted lines and the country has lettered: "United States", as per Stevens and Tree 3d. This post-Revolutionary War wall map of North and South America gathered together geographical material from D'Anville, Jefferys and Thomas Pownall, and incorporated the new political divisions brought about by the establishment of the United States. As per the 1783 Treaty of Paris, the United States is shown with its western border at the Mississippi and northern border extending through the Great Lakes. In the inset titled: "The Continent and Islands of America.", the United States of North America heads the list with its 13 states and "The State of Vermont, and all the Lands between the Lakes, the Apalaches & the Missisippi": the term "State of Vermont" refers to its status as a separate republic. (Vermont joined the United States in 1791). "All the Lands between the Lakes." etc. would soon be settled, not to say over-run by a flood of white settlers bringing about the multitudinous conflicts with the Native American tribes who are regionally designated on the map. Extremely well supplied with placenames and details, the Gibson map represents the sum of cartographical knowledge of the Americas for the 18th century. Stevens and Tree 3c/3d.

A DISSERTATION ON THE POLITICAL UNION AND CONSTITUTION OF THE THIRTEEN UNITED STATES, OF NORTH-AMERICA: WHICH IS NECESSARY TO THEIR PRESERVATION AND HAPPINESS, HUMBLY OFFERED TO THE PUBLIC, By a Citizen of Philadelphia

Hartford: Hudson and Goodwin, 1783. 30pp. Antique half calf and marbled boards. Light dampstaining to titlepage, moderate tanning throughout. Very good. This is the most important work by the noted Revolutionary-era political economist, sometimes called the first American economist. It is the Hartford edition, after the Philadelphia first of the same year. Webster advocated supporting the Revolution by taxation instead of loans, a free trade, and the reduction of the issuance of paper money. In the present work, he expresses his faith in a stronger union, and thus became an early advocate of the Constitution. It was on the basis of this work that Hannis Taylor later claimed that Webster was the true author of the Constitution. Born in Connecticut in 1726 and trained at Yale for the ministry, Webster was elderly man by the time he began to write extensively. He produced a number of important political tracts in the Confederation and Federal periods, most of them arguing for principles of free trade and later in support of the Bank of the United States, a key component of Hamilton's fiscal plans. His POLITICAL ESSAYS (Philadelphia, 1791), gathered together many of his Federalist arguments. SABIN 102402. HOWES W208, "aa." HILDEBURN 4411. EVANS 18299. REESE, FEDERAL HUNDRED 2.

Karlstadt, 4. III. 1783. - ¾ S. auf Doppelblatt. 4to. Opuscula Analytica.

St. Petersburg: Academia Imperialis Scientiarum, 1783-85. First edition of this collection of 28 previously unpublished papers by Euler (listed below), of which the most important is 'Observationes circa divisionem quadratorum per numeros primos', which gives the first clear statement of the 'law of quadratic reciprocity,' called the 'golden theorem' by Gauss who gave its first proof in his Disquisitiones Arithmeticae (1801). The first volume was published in the year of Euler's death, most of the papers having been presented to the St. Petersburg Academy a decade or more earlier. The majority of the papers in these volumes deal with topics in number theory (3, 5, 7-11, 14, 19). Euler had studied questions related to quadratic reciprocity for decades, starting with a letter to Christian Goldbach dated 28 August, 1742. He gradually accumulated numerical evidence, but did not feel able to formulate the 'law' until he did so in (3). He continued to work on topics related to quadratic reciprocity - paper (5) is an example - but a proof eluded him, as it did Legendre later. Apart from the papers dealing with quadratic reciprocity, the most interesting of the number-theoretic papers is perhaps 'Nova subsidia pro resolutione formulae axx + 1 = yy,' which gives a new method of solving Pell's equation x2- dy2 = 1. Euler had developed a method of solution using continued fractions in 1765 ('De usu novi algorithmi in problemate Pelliano solvendo') but noted that for some values of d this method leads to very tedious calculations (he mentions the case d = 61, for which the smallest solution is x = 1766319049 and y = 226153980). The new method, which generates solutions of Pell's equation from solutions of closely related equations, is much more efficient, although it applies only to certain values of d. It has been repeatedly rediscovered over the centuries, and has recently been generalized to apply to any value of d. Another group of papers deals with finite and infinite series (1, 2, 20, 24, 25). Euler had famously solved the problem of exactly summing the zeta function series ς (n) = 1/1n + 1/2n + 1/3n + 1/4n + ... in the case n = 2, which had defeated the Bernoullis, and in paper (25) he calculates ς (2n) up to n = 17. In 'De summa seriei ex numeris primis formatae 1/3 - 1/5 + 1/7 + 1/11 - 1/13 ... ubi numeri primi formae 4n - 1 habent signum positivum, formae autem 4n + 1 signum negativum,' Euler notes that the sum of the reciprocals of the primes diverges, as does the harmonic series 1 + (1/2) + (1/3) + (1/4) + .... His derivations start with the 'Leibniz' series, 1 - (1/3) + (1/5) - (1/7) + (1/9) - ... = /4. In 'De eximio usu methodi interpolationum in serierum doctrina' Euler presents his discovery of the 'Lagrange interpolation formula,' a fundamental technique in numerical analysis. This was published by Lagrange in 1795, and earlier by Waring in 1779 ('Problems concerning interpolations,' Phil. Trans., Vol. 69, pp. 59-67), but Euler's paper was presented to the Academy on May 18, 1772. The last two papers discuss topics in probability, a subject not normally associated with Euler. 'Solutio quaestionis ad calculum probabilitatis pertinentis' treats a problem in annuities: How much should be paid by a couple, so that a certain sum of money can be paid to the heir after the death of the other? In 'Solutio quarundam quaestionum difficiliorum in calculo probabilium,' Euler studies the 'Genoese lottery,' a game of chance similar to today's lotteries in which numbered balls are placed in a large wheel, five or six are drawn at random, and players attempt to guess the numbers. Euler became interested in such lotteries after he was asked by King Frederick II for his analysis of a proposal for a state lottery involving the drawing of five numbers from 1 to 90. Other papers deal with definite integrals (15-17), infinite products (12, 13), and several with one of Euler's favourite topics, continued fractions (4, 21-23). The works included in these volumes are as follows: 1. Varia artificia in serierum indolem inquirendi 3. Observationes circa divisionem quadratorum per numeros primos 4. Observationes analyticae 5. 8. Miscellanea analytica 12. Variae observationes circa angulos in progressione geometrica progredientes 13.
