1783 - A Constitutional Study of the British Colonies Written by a Georgian Loyalist Judge During the American Revolution Stokes, Anthony [1736-1799]. A View of the Constitution of the British Colonies, in North-America and the West-Indies, at the Time the Civil War Broke Out on the Continent of America. In Which Notice is Taken of such Alterations as Have Happened Since that Time, Down to the Present Period. London: Printed for the author and sold by B. White, 1783. [ii], xvi, 555, [1] pp. Half-title lacking. Octavo (8-1/2" x 5-1/2"). Recent period-style calf over textured paper boards, raised bands and lettering piece to spine, endpapers renewed. Negligible light rubbing to extremities. An appealing copy of a scarce title published at the end of the American Revolution. * Stokes, a member of the Inner Temple and the Loyalist chief justice of the General Court of the Georgia colony from 1769-1776, and in restored Royal Georgia from 1779-1782, "gives a very interesting discussion of the state of legal administration in the southern colonies.Stokes also discusses what part of the English Common Law the colonists had brought along with them" (Reinsch). Contents include chapters on the Colonial civil and criminal courts, counsel and attorneys in the colonies, the court of Vice-Admiralty, Negroes in the colonies and the modes of conveyance and manumission.         The Village a Poem in Two Books

      J. Dodsley, London 1783 - Quarto, with half-title and final blank; text a little dusted but a good copy in later drab boards, calf spine label defective. First edition of Crabbe's best poem, an unsentimental homage to English country life. It was the work that confirmed his reputation and promise. Written in stirring heroic couplets, the poem was an implicit protest against the enclosure of common land by landowners. Mistakenly regarded as nothing more than a grim cataloguing of the ills of rural life, the opening to the second book is apropos:'No longer truth, though shown in verse, disdain,But own the village life a life of pain;I too must yield, that oft amid these woesAre gleams of transient mirth and hours of sweet repose'. XV,766 pp., 9 folded engraved plates, 1 large folded engraved map. A fine clean copy.. The scarce first edition (the first part only) of Sparrman's famous travelling account which has been called the '"most trustworthy account of the Cape Colony and the various races of people then residing in it" that had been published in the 18th century. The work is one of the most importent investigations of the South African fauna in the second half of the 18th century. He sailed for the Cape of Good Hope in January 1772 to take up a post as a tutor. When James Cook arrived there later in the year at the start of his second voyage, Sparrman was taken on as assistant naturalist to Johann and Georg Forster. After the voyage he returned to Cape Town in July 1775 and practiced medicine, earning enough to finance a journey into the interior

A Letter to the Earl of Shelburne , on the Subject of Mr. Secretary Townshend's Letter to the Chairman and Deputy-Chairman of the East India Company

London: John Debrett, 1783. Octavo, 26pp, some very light foxing, disbound; a good copy. A printed letter critical of Thomas Townshend's involvement as Home Secretary in the affairs of the East India Company, published before the contentious resignation of Warren Hastings as Governor of Bengal. The letter was addressed by Lord Bellamont to the Earl of Shelburne, then Prime Minister in the final months of the American War of Independence. Bellamont, an inveterate letter-writer, was an Irish peer and a pest; painted by Reynolds, he was known as the "Hibernian Seducer". Coote's pamphlet charges Townshend with having overstepped the bounds of his authority in the controversy surrounding Warren Hastings, the Governor of Bengal. Hastings had aroused animosity in exposing the endemic corruption and cronyism of British merchants in India; when the Directors of the East India Company sought his removal, Townshend intervened and stated that the dismissal was 'directly repugnant to the sense of the House of Commons'. He is attacked here for acting with undue authority, and for misrepresenting both parliament and the King. In this poisonous political climate Warren Hastings resigned in 1784 and returned to England to face impeachment in parliament. The trial ran for seven years and culminated in Hastings' acquittal in 1795.

HISTOIRE RAISONÉE DES OPÉRATIONS MILITAIRES ET POLITIQUES DE LA DERNIÈRE GUERRE, SUIVIE D'OBSERVATIONS SUR LA RÉVOLUTION QUI EST ARRIVÉE DANS LES MOEURS & SUR CELLE QUI EST SUR LE POINT D'ARRIVER DANS LA CONSTITUTION D'ANGLETERRE

Liege. 1783.. xii,235,[1]pp., plus 10pp. supplement (not found in all copies). [bound following:] Lacombe, Francois: TABLEAU DE LONDRES ET DE SES ENVIRONS, AVEC UN PRECIS DE LA CONSTITUTION DE L'ANGLETERRE, & DE SA DECADENCE. Londres et a Bruxelles, 1784. 191pp. Joly with the half title; Lacombe without the half title. The two bound together in contemporary French mottled calf, spine richly gilt in five compartments. Hinges neatly repaired. Very clean internally. An attractive copy. A firsthand account of the Revolution, by a little-known but fascinating French soldier of fortune who fought for the British. A disputatious and critical man, Joly de St. Valier condemns the British conduct of the war, especially in naval matters, but also heaps some scorn on the French and De Grasse. The ten page supplement, included here, is found in only some copies of the work. It was likely printed later, and continues Joly's war of words with Sir Joseph Yorke, former British Ambassador at the Hague, who was quite involved in British naval strategy during the war. A very rare work on the market, with much important firsthand material on the military history of the American Revolution. The Streeter copy realized $450 in 1967. Joly's work is bound in a contemporary French binding following a copy of Francois Lacombe's TABLEAU DE LONDRES ET DE SES ENVIRONS..., which describes the moral and social failings of London and Britain as a whole, a consequence being the unlikelihood of their defeating the rebellious Americans.         The Art of Painting of Charles Alphonse du Fresnoy. Translated into English Verse by William Mason, M.A. With Annotations by Sir Joshua Reynolds, Knt., President of the Royal Academy

Printed by A. Ward, and sold by J. Dodsley, T. Cadell, [et al.]: York, 1783. 4to, contemporary full speckled calf, backstrip decorated in gilt, gilt-lettered black morocco backstrip label. [iii]-xix, [iii], 213, [1(errata)], [1(ads)] pp. Bookplates of Ham Court and Harrison Hayford. Rubbed, lacking half-title, minor worming at gutter of preliminary leaves, occasional foxing; a very respectable association copy. First Edition of this translation. Charles Alphonse du Fresnoy ( 1611-1665) had a modestly successful career as a painter but is best remembered for his Latin poem De arte graphica, which he wrote while studying art in Italy and which was first published in Paris in 1684 by his friend and fellow -artist Pierre Mignard. As EB 11 states, the work "embodied his observations on the art of painting; it may be termed a critical treatise on the practice of the art with general advice to students. The precepts are sound according to the standard of his time; the poetical merits slender enough." The poem was soon translated into French; the elderly John Dryden later rendered it in English prose. William Mason (1725-1797), poet and crony of Thomas Gray and Horace Walpole, labored for some years on this new version in English heroic couplets. This edition includes a poetic dedication from Mason to Sir Joshua Reynolds (who had urged him to revise and publish the work), an interesting critical preface by Mason, a brief biography of Du Fresnoy by Thomas Birch, the poem itself in both English and Latin, copious notes by Mason and Reynolds, some comments by du Fresnoy on the painters of his time and of previous generations, Dryden's preface to his prose translation, a poetic epistle by Alexander Pope that was habitually printed with Dryden's translation, and a table of great artists and their works that had been prepared for his own use by Thomas Gray. This copy has an interesting association in the Ham Court bookplate, with its inked shelf numbers. Ham Court was the Worcestershire home of Joseph Martin, a late-18th-century collector and the presiding Canon of Exeter Cathedral. Beyond the fact that it contained some important Dutch landscapes, little seems to be known of Martin's collection; but he clearly had a proper art-reference library. Harrison Hayford is an eminent authority on Herman Melville and a book collector of distinction. Gaskell, William Mason, 32. Hilles, Literary Career of Sir Joshua Reynolds, 18. Rothschild 1401.

Paris: De Bure, fils aîné, 1783. The very rare sale catalogue -- OCLC locates no copy in the U.S. -- of the library of Mouchard (d. ca. 1783), former deputy of La Rochelle to the Conseil Royal de Commerce. We learn from Debure's "Avertissement" that the sale was prepared in great haste and is not catalogued to his usual standards. And, indeed, the catalogue consists of just 63 lots, each with a large quantity of books, ranging from 33 to 300 volumes. I estimate the library totaled about 2000 volumes, including many notable natural history books. Fine copy, priced throughout in a contemporary hand. ❧ Grolier Club, Printed Catalogues of French Book Auctions...1643-1830, 305. Guigard, II, p. 378. .

Neat repairs to two corners and board edges. An excellent copy. First edition of Thomas Mortimer's revised edition of Beawes's Lex Mercatoria, the fourth edition overall. The author of several works of mercantile interest, Beawes, British consul at Cadiz and Seville for almost three decades, was best-known for this title, first published in 1751, a standard work which went through several editions in the eighteenth century. Thomas Mortimer, who was similarly the author or compiler of several successful merchant's guides, here brings it up to date, noting "After having thus delineated the Outlines of the Alterations and Additions, it would be superfluous to enter into a Detail of Particulars, as those who are in Possession of the former editions will find, by Comparison, that they occur under almost every general Head or Chapter throughout the Work. Upon the whole, it is hoped, that as no Expence or Assiduity has been spared to make the Work answer the Expectation of that vast Body of respectable Characters who are interested in it, it will meet with the Approbation and Encouragement of the commercial World." It also gives the prayers and procedures to be used in blessing a range of objects- including baptismal fonts, the holy water used in aspersions, new crosses and images, scapulars, and burial shrouds. Although the prayers in the manual are in Latin, the instructions relating to ritual are always in Spanish.\" (The Penitente brotherhood: patriarchy and Hispano-Catholicism in New Mexico, Carroll. pg 142).Miguel Venegas who also wrote the first, and thus cornerstone, history of the Californias, Noticia de la California \"was born in Puebla in 1680, entered the Society of Jesus at Tepotzotlan in 1700, was ordained in 1705, and served as a professor of moral theology in the Colegio Maximo of San Pedro y San Pablo in Mexico City from 1714 to 1724. For reasons of health, in the latter year he was sent as administrator to the Jesuit hacienda of Chicomocelo, where he compounded medications and dedicated himself to letters. In 1731 his classic Manual de Parrocos appeared in its first edition, and three years later he finished a biography of Juan Bautista Zappa, S.J., close friend of Juan Maria de Salvatierra, S.J., founder of the first permanent mission in the Californias, Nuestra Senora de Loreto. Highly inspired by the dynamic expansion of the Jesuits in the mission fields of Sinaloa, Sonora, Pimeria Alta, and California, Venegas had sought to serve in the California enterprise, but was rejected because of his delicate health. Thus, he was unable to go to his \"beloved California\" and he devoted his time to writing its history. (Volkmann)HBS 65090.$1,000

Edinburgh: Printed for the Author 1783 - 8vo, 202 x 128 mms., pp. 338, including half-title, contemporary calf, recently rebacked with old gilt spine and red morocco label laid down, facsimiles of pp. 19 - 22 inserted before defective leaves of those pages in text, and last leaf of subscribers in facsimile; text a little fingered and soiled, but a good copy. Who was Rest Knipe? He must have been known to dozens of people in Edinburgh and Aberdeen, because there are 32 pages of subscribers in the two editions of this book; but he seems to have escaped the attention of scholars. Perhaps the most obvious feature of his treatise is the almost completely secular character of the education he prescribes for children and his opposition to a classical education for most boys: "after a boy has been puzzling his poor brains, and been tortured with Latin for several years, it is ten to one, that, comparative speaking, he knows nothing; i. e nothing radical and to the bottom; nothing, in short, but what one year's apprenticeship will entirely efface." Walter Scott, presumably the father of the novelist and poet, was one of the subscribers. ESTC T121650 locates copies in BL, Cambridge, NLS; Harvard, McMaster, National Institute of Education, and Pennsylvania. The Aberdeen printing is a different setting, with pagination [6], 11-304, and probably takes precedence over the Edinburgh edition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Traité du charbon ou anthrax dans les animaux. Paris, Imprimerie Royale, 1782. 8vo. With woodcut crowned French royal coat of arms on title-page and a woodcut headpiece (signed "B."). 19th-century(?) half tanned, mottled sheepskin.

Blake, p. 83; Mennessier de la Lance I, p.243; cf. Wellcome II, p. 321 (1783 ed.). Second, considerably enlarged edition of a work on veterinary medicine dealing with the livestock disease anthrax or splenic fever, by the French veterinarian Philibert Chabert (1737-1814), director and general inspector of the school of veterinary medicine. In this treatise Chabert warns of the deplorable hygienic conditions in which many farm animals live and tries to illuminate the causes of the epidemics that decimated French livestock in the eighteenth-century. It discusses not only sheep, cattle and horses, but even dogs (the first paragraph already notes that it attacks "animaux domestiques"). In very good condition, with only ccasional minor foxing. An interesting treatise on anthrax.

Iurisprudentia forensis secundum Pandectarum ordinem in usum auditorii proposita.

Jena, sumtibus viduae Croeckerianae, 1783.. Editio sexta multis locis auctior et emendatior. Oktav. Titelblatt mit Vigentte, (8), 834, (60) S. Zwei zeitgenössische Pappbände.. Letztes großes Pandektenlehrbuch vor dem Auftreten der historischen Schule! Last great pandectist textbook before emergence of the Historical school of law! The epoch of the Usus modernus pandectarum (Franz Wieacker: contemporary application of Roman law) produced not only the great, seminal linked commentaries of Samuel Stryk, Agustin von Leyser and Wolfgang Adam Lauterbach, which constitute manuals on the Ius Romanum within the framework of domestic law, but also a number of important textbooks. Among the most important textbooks and their authors in the 17th and 18th centuries were: J. H. Böhmer, Georg Adam Struve, Wolfgang Adam Lauterbach, Johann Gottlieb Heineccius and Johann August HELLFELD. Hellfeld, from 1755 Pandect Professor at the University of Jena, edited his Jurisprudentia forensis, which was to gain lasting fame through Glück's great commentary, for the first time in 1764. The pandectist textbook follows the legal structure of the Digest. The work saw its final edition in 1806, a few years before the emergence of the Historical School under von Savigny and the soon dominant pandectist system.         Prolegomena zu einer jeden funftigen Metaphysik (Prolegomena towards a Future Metaphysics).

Johann Friedrich Hartknoch, Riga 1783 - TP + [3]-222, small Octavo. First Edition, Third Printing, (Warda 77). This, Kant's defense of his Critik der reinen Vernunft, is considered by many to be his most beautiful and comprehensive book. It continues to be read and admired as one of his most concise and approachable works. The book was written primarily to remove some of the misunderstandings and bewilderment that had greeted the release of the first edition of the Critik in 1781. Kant felt that he had been severely misunderstood and hence, unfairly criticized. The principal contents of the Prolegomena were subsequently incorporated by Kant into the second edition of the Critik der reinen Vernunft in 1787. The first printing of this book (Warda 75) has a floriated bar headpiece on page three rather than the two cherubs headpiece found in the second and third issues (Warda 76 & 77). In addition, the first issue has a floriated bar on page 222 (rather than the bar with climbing leaves - Warda 76 - or a small ornamental piece with climbing flora - Warda 77) Finally, in the first issue, page 78, line eight has the misprinted "subjektiv" rather than the correct"'objektiv" - which appear in the two later issues. Contemporary ¾ leather with speckled brown boards. Spine with five raised bands and gilt lettered on label and a gilt floral design the compartment below the title. Spine edges very lightly worn and corners slightly bumped. Overall, a bright, clean and tight copy in a nice contemporary binding of one of Kant's most popular works. PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.         Sammandrag af Capitain Jacob Cooks Ã…ren 1772, 73, 74 och 1775 Omkring Södra Polen

Upsala: Johan Edman, 1783. Small octavo, with the half-title, early owner's names to preliminaries, a few pages with some wear but a very good copy; contemporary navy-blue papered boards, faded manuscript label, bumped. A very rare edition, a Swedish-language compliation derived from both the official account of Cook's second voyage and Georg Forster's unofficial Voyage round the World. Issued the same year as Sparrman's Swedish-language Resa, the actual editor of this volume remains unknown (the Edman edition of the third voyage in Swedish referred to the editor as an "anoynme" from Finland). The work is testament to the very real interest in Cook's voyages in Sweden, in part because of their proprietorial feelings towards the important contributions of Solander and Sparrman. Beddie knew a copy in the Mitchell Library, and a copy has more recently been acquired by the National Library of Australia, but this is a most uncommon book.

        A Specimen of Printing Types

1783. The above are some of the sizes cast in the Letter Foundery of Dr. Alex. Wilson and Sons. Glasgow. 1783." Broadside. (c. 42 x 50 cm). Corners damaged and paper uniformly browned. Some staining. 45 types are shown. In the eighteenth century, when the trades of printer and typefounder became distinct, and their interests separate, specimensheets of types became more common. In a few instances the types in a given printing-house were shown in specimen-books - which exhibited its equipment for customers to choose from. But almost all type-founders put forth specimen-books and specimen-sheets showing what types they had to sell to their customers, who were the printers. During the eighteenth century, therefore, these were very often met with... But although common then, these early books and sheets are now rare. (Updike) On Wilson and the present specimen Updike says: "Alexander Wilson, a Scotchman, born in 1714, was educated as a physiican. A change visit to a typefoundry interested him so much that, with a friend named Baine, he attempted an improved system of type-casting. This coming to nothing, they set up on a small scale a typefoundry at St. Andrews. Baine later left Wilson to go into business for himself.... The foundry was removed to Glasgow, and Wilson accepting a post as professor of astronomy in the University, its management fell to his sons. Their earliest specimen was dated 1772. A specimen in broadside form came out in 1783 and illustrated an article on printing in Chambers' Cyclopedia. It shows a selection only of Wilson's types, but exhibits fonts of roman and italic from six-line pica to pearl, and five sizes of black-letter. Of Greek types there are five sizes (the double pica being that of the Homer), and there are six sizes of Hebrew..." [cf Updike, Printing Types II pp 116-117]

Octavo, woodcut vignette on title; contemporary continental (?Swiss) mottled calf, spine with small floral device gilt in compartments between raised bands, double orange labels just chipped at edges; a nice copy. The rare second edition. The second French edition, and very scarce. Beddie records only the Mitchell and National Library copies in Australia. 'Both French editions are of great rarity and are of interest not only on that account but because of the additional matter which they contain…' (Holmes). Zimmermann's eye-witness account of Cook's third voyage first appeared, in German, at Mannheim in 1781. The French version was next, with this second French edition and a second German edition appearing in 1783. Dutch editions appeared in 1784 and 1791, and a Russian version was published at St Petersburg in 1786 (Kroepelien, 1365). These seem to have been all the appearances of the narrative until the Alexander Turnbull Library published Tewsley's translation in 1926. As Rodney Davidson wrote of the early printings, 'all these editions are exceedingly rare… It is hard to predict the realisation price for a copy if one were to come into the open market, as competition between collectors would be very keen…'. In any early edition, this is one of the scarcest of all the Cook voyage accounts (there is for example no copy of any of the eighteenth century editions in the catalogue of the Hill collection). It was the first description of the third voyage to appear on the continent, and as one of two accounts first published in 1781 - a full three years before the official account - it may well be the first description of the voyage to have been published. It includes an eyewitness account of Cook's death and is also 'valuable for his lower-deck impressions of the character of Cook…' (Beaglehole). 'Zimmermann, a native of Speyer, was coxswain in the Discovery. From the start of the voyage he determined to keep a shorthand journal of the voyage and to retain it, despite the instructions… demanding the surrender of all logs and journals… His account is by no means free from errors, but it has an ingenuousness and charm which differentiate it from the other accounts. His appreciation of Cook's character deserves to rank with that of Samwell' (Holmes).

        King Street Guildhall

      T. Malton, London 1783 - A rare, early aquatint view of London by one of the great early exponents of the art: "My real master was Tom Malton" (J.M.W. Turner) This view of the Guildhall in King Street, London, shows the work that had been carried out on the south front in 1788-1789 from the designs of George Dance. In addition the colonnade to the west of the facade has been replaced by a brick wall. The church in the center is St. Lawrence Jewry, which was designed by Christopher Wren. The aquatint is a perfect example of the deep, spacious, but highly articulated perspective that Canaletto brought to London mid-century. Thomas Malton the younger, "son of Thomas Malton the elder [1726-1801], was born in 1748, probably in London. He was with his father during the latter's residence in Dublin, and then passed three years in the office of James Gandon, the architect, in London. In 1774 Malton received a premium from the Society of Arts, and in 1782 gained the Academy gold medal for a design for a theatre. In 1773 he sent to the Academy a view of Covent Garden, and was afterwards a constant exhibitor, chiefly of views of London streets and buildings, drawn in Indian ink and tinted; in these. their extreme accuracy in the architectural details renders them of great interest and value as topographical records; they are enlivened with groups of figures, in which Malton is said to have been assisted by F. Wheatley. After leaving Ireland, Malton appears to have always lived in London. and at an evening drawing-class which he held there, received as pupils Thomas Girtin and young J. M. W. Turner, whose father brought him to be taught perspective. In later life Turner often said, My real master was Tom Malton. In 1791 Malton removed to Great Titchfield Street, and finally, in 1796, to Long Acre. He made a few of the drawings for Watts's Seats of the Nobility and Gentry, 1779, &c., and executed some large aquatints of buildings in the metropolis and Bath, being one of the first to avail himself of the newly introduced art of aquatinta for the purpose of multiplying copies of his views."         An Authentic Narrative of a Voyage performed by Captain Cook and Captain Clerke, in His Majesty's Ships Resolution and Discovery, during the Years 1776, 1777, 1778, 1779, and 1780; in search of a North-West Passage... including a faithful Account of all their Discoveries, and the unfortunate Death of Captain Cook

London: G. Robinson, J. Sewell, and J. Debrett, 1783. Two volumes, octavo, with a folding chart and 21 engraved plates; a fine copy in the original grey boards, spines carefully restored, printed paper labels, uncut. Important Cook narrative, in original boards. An extremely good copy of the second, revised edition in original boards. Ellis, a surgeon's mate and talented amateur artist, sailed first on the Discovery and later on the Resolution. Despite the prohibition by the Admiralty of the publication of any unauthorized account of the voyage, Ellis, who was in financial straits, sold his narrative to a London publisher for 50 guineas, thus earning the condemnation of Sir Joseph Banks, who wrote to him in January 1782 that "I fear it will not in future be in my power to do what it might have been, had you asked and followed my advice". Ellis's narrative contains much valuable information on Alaska, the Northwest Coast, and Hawaii, and is particularly well known for the attractive engraved plates, after the author's drawings, include eight of Hawaii, two of Alaska, and three of the Northwest Coast, among the earliest published of these areas; Choris's famous views did not appear until almost forty years later.
