Paris, P.F. Didot Jeune, 1783. 8vo. pp. xvi, 468, (2), with 3 folded engraved plates. Contemporary half calf, spine richly gilt. Pritzel 719. He played the same role in the south of France that Abbé Nollet played in Paris; that is, he contributed greatly to the development of research in electricity - as much by work and personal experience as by his lectures. 'De l'électricité des végétaux' deals with the application of the electricity to the growth of plants; for this Bertholon used an electrovegetometer of his own invention" (D.S.B. II, p. 82-83). La Course des Chevaux" from Le Monument du Costume

"Among the Greatest Achievement of the worldís graphic art" -Ray La Course des Chevaux (Original engravings from Le Monument du Costume). Paris: Prault, 1783. From Third Suite d'Estampes pour servir a l'histoire des Modes et du Costume en France, dans le dix-huitieme siecle. 1783. Sigmund Freudenberg & Jean Michel Moreau le Jeune. Engraving on laid paper (12 3/4" x 16"). With large margins, slight chipping. Very lightly browned, slight. A very good impression. Le Monument du Costume is a series of fine engravings which was created to record the glory of the late 18th century French nobility by depicting the polished manners, clothes and lavish surroundings of the Bourbon court. The original printing consisted of three series with a total of 36 engravings. The prints are rich with details of elegant couture. Gordon Ray notes, "The plates are large in scale and masterly in conception. Though they are finished to the last detail, there is a superb naturalness about them unequaled elsewhere in eighteenth-century illustration. (They are imbued with) an effortless charm which makes these scenes of high society the most convincing validation of Talleyrand's observation that ìno one who had not lived in France in the years before the Revolution knew how how sweet life could be." Lectures on Rhetoric and Belles Lettres.

London: Printed for W. Strahan. 1783 - FIRST EDITION. 4to,295 x 230 mms., pp. viii, 496; [iv], 550 [551 - 567 Index, 568 blank], engraved portrait of Blair as frontispiece in volume 1, entirely uncut, contemporary quarter calf, black morocco labels; marbled boards (very worn and faded); tear in C1 volume 2 repaired, but a decent copy with the contemporary autograph "Anderson Smk" on the title-page of volume 1, and on the front paste-down end-paper of volume 2 the early 19th century bookplate for S. Haward's Circulating Library, No. 4 Colonade, Cheltenham. The first review of Blair's admired and frequently-reprinted book came in the Monthly Review, in which the reviewer affirmed that Blair had exemplified a "happy and singular union of taste and philosophy [and had] supplied a great defect in the science of criticism." It also made a "valuable addition to the polite literature" of the late 18th century. A long and thorough review in The Critical Review 1783 was not so complimentary and concluded that there "were many inaccuracies of style in these Lectures. The passages, which we have now cited, will be sufficient to justify this observation; and may serve in some respect to show, that the Eloquence of this country has not yet fixed her residence on the north side of the Tweed. Some of these improprieties may be thought too trivial to deserve the attention of a celebrated author, and others may probably be defended by analogy, or the example of preceding writers. But the greater part of them are real violations of grammar, or of that purity, propriety, and precision, which Dr. Blair himself has justly recommended." [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Elements of Jurisprudence, Treated of in the Preliminary Part of a.

1783 - "The Complement of Sir W. Blackstone's Commentaries" Wooddeson, Richard [1745-1822]. Elements of Jurisprudence, Treated of in the Preliminary Part of a Course of Lectures on the Laws of England. London: Printed for T. Payne and Son, at the Mews Gate, 1783. [iv], 118 pp. Quarto (10-1/2" x 8-1/2"). Contemporary calf, blind fillets to boards, lettering piece and blind fillets to spine. Some rubbing to extremities, corners bumped and somewhat worn, front board just beginning to separate but secure, rear joint starting. Two early armorial bookplates (of Henry C. Compton Esq. Manor House, Lyndhurst, and Scrope Berdmore, S.T.P. Coll. Mert. Custos, 1790) to front pastedown. Offsetting to endleaves, interior otherwise fresh. A nice copy. * First and only London edition. Wooddeson was elected a Vinerian Scholar in 1766, became a Vinerian Fellow in 1776 and was Vinerian Professor from 1777 to 1793. He was steeped in Blackstone's work, and he strove to supplement it. "Dr. Wooddeson's Lectures form, in a measure, the complement of Sir W. Blackstone's Commentaries, for he supplies some deficiencies in the production of his predecessor, and treats more in detail, some topics, but slightly noticed by him. Though of acknowledged merit, as to learning, method of arrangement, and accuracy of rules, they do not seem to have attained so great a reputation as their real worth entitles them to. In point of style, and beauty of narration, they follow the Commentaries, haud non passibus auquis" (Marvin). Holdsworth describes each chapter in detail and calls this work a very useful book on legal theory. This book had a second edition published in Dublin in 1792. Marvin, Legal Bibliography 745. [LETTER, SIGNED, FROM GENERAL GUY CARLETON TO GENERAL CLARKE, REGARDING DESERTERS AT THE CLOSE OF THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR; TOGETHER WITH A DOCUMENT SIGNED BY GENERAL FREDERICK MACKENZIE ON THE SAME SUBJECT]

New York. May 15, 1783.. 2pp. Letter has integral blank. Folio. Old fold lines. Minor soiling and wear. Very good. In a half morocco and cloth clamshell box, spine gilt. Letter, signed by Brigadier General Guy Carleton, written to Brigadier General Alured Clarke regarding clemency for deserters from the British Army at the end of the American Revolution; together with orders for General Clarke from Deputy Adjutant General Frederick Mackenzie, dated May 14th, to deny any deserters wishing to return to the ranks. At the time, Carleton, who was Commander in Chief of all British forces in North America, was overseeing the evacuation of the British forces and Loyalists from New York, a process that would last until November. He writes: "I enclose a copy of an order [not present] I have given here relative to deserters: Such as come in and surrender themselves to the officer commanding at any of our posts, shall be pardoned in like manner. You will take such measures for the transportation of the sick from Philadelphia to this place, as, from their numbers and other circumstances, you shall judge most convenient and adviseable, paying some attention to their own wishes." The order from General Mackenzie, however, is far less forgiving and countermands Carleton's order: "The Commander in Chief has so far pardoned several English deserters, as to allow them to return within the lines, and to send them home; but their dishonor is not done away. No regiment here shall receive them, nor shall they again serve in this army. 'Tis recommended to the soldiers of every British, and to the soldiers of every British American Corps, to kick all such rascals out of their quarters, should they have the impudence to come in among them."

THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER . . . TOGETHER WITH THE PSALTER OR PSALMS OF DAVID

Oxford: The Clarendon Press, 1783. n. Hardcover. In Archetypical Edwards Vellum and with a Fore-Edge Painting Probably Done at the Time. 140 x 83 mm (5 1/2 x 3 1/4"). [216], [48] unnumbered leaves. VERY APPEALING CONTEMPORARY VELLUM OVER BOARDS, ALMOST CERTAINLY BY EDWARDS OF HALIFAX, covers bordered by a Neoclassical pentaglyph and metope roll against a blue wash, center of each board with large gilt-bordered medallion containing the gilt monogram "M L C" on a blue background, flat spine divided into panels by gilt pentaglyph and metope border (the one at the bottom over blue wash), panels with classical urn centerpiece and volute cornerpieces, second panel with gilt titling on a blue background, turn-ins with gilt chain roll, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. WITH A FINE FORE-EDGE PAINTING, VERY PROBABLY BY EDWARDS, depicting Fountains Abbey in Yorkshire. IN THE ORIGINAL (rubbed and soiled, but quite intact) soft green LEATHER SLIPCASE. Title page with ink ownership inscription of M: L: Carey. Griffiths 1783/6. Spine gilt slightly dulled in places, rear turn-in lifting a little at one corner, title and a couple of gatherings with moderate foxing, but still quite an excellent copy, the binding showing no wear, the text clean and fresh, and the painting well preserved. This is an immensely pleasing little book in period vellum produced by one of the most important families in the history of English bookbinding. The Edwards of Halifax bindery was founded by William Edwards (1723-1808) and continued by several of his brothers, half-brothers, and sons (by far the most important of the sons being Thomas, who lived from 1762-1834). This famous firm produced a number of important innovations in binding design, the most significant being the idea of concealing a painting under the gilt of the fore edge. This hidden treasure could be revealed, once the edge was fanned out, as a special surprise element of the volumes they bound--typically in Etruscan calf, or, as in the present case, in vellum decorated with gilt and blue wash. The painting here is rendered in the subtle hues typical of Edwards paintings--soft grays and greens, in this instance--and the scenic ruins are one of the favored Edwards subjects, second only to stately homes. For these reasons, we speculate that it may well have been done at or near the time of publication. In any case, our painting is particularly pleasing for its sense of depth, partly accomplished both by clever use of shadow and by considerable finely painted three-dimensional architectural detail.

Preface initialed by the translator. Inscribed from the translator Lévêque to 'Monseigneur le Comte de Montmorin de St.-Herem, commandant en chef dans la province de Bretagne'. imprint date altered in ink to '1784'. First Edition of the French Translation. An important contribution to naval science by Spanish geometrician and naval officer, Jorge Juan Y Santacilla, originally published in Spanish at Madrid in 1771. Among other notable accomplishments the author participated in the famous joint French-Spanish expedition to Peru in 1735 to measure an arc of the meridian near the equator, founded the astronomical observatory at Cadiz, and established the Friendly Literary Society, the forerunner of the Royal Society of Sciences of Madrid. "His combination of theoretical learning and practical experience enabled Juan, in his Examen maritimo, to provide a considerable base for the improvement of naval science, to refute several empirical theories of navigation, and to establish the fundamental principles of naval architecture. The book is a valuable application of mechanics to naval science." (DSB) The French edition contains significant additions by the translator, French hydrographer, Pierre Lévêque [1746-1814]. The present copy is inscribed from the translator to Armand-Marc, Comte de Montmorin de St.-Herem [1745-1792], who served successively as ambassador to Spain and governor of Brittany. During the early stages of the Revolution, he was associated with Mirabeau and he remained one of the inner circle of the King's friends until he perished in the massacres of September 1792. The book also bears the ownership entry and armorial bookplate of American naval architect John Lenthall [1807-1882,] who was Chief of the Bureau of Construction and Repairs, United States Navy, from 1853 to 1871. Lenthall distinguished himself as a master of wooden shipbuilding, having been chiefly responsible for the design of such ships as the Wabash, Niagara, Roanoke, Colorado, and Minnesota. A Practical Treatise on Chimneys,

London - G. Robinson 1783 - The third edition of James Anderson's scarce A Practical Treatise on Chimneys. Rebound in half leather with gilt lettering. Third Edition. Scarce. James Anderson, 1739 1808, was an agriculturist and political economist. He held the tenancy of a large farm at Hermiston, near Edinburgh and later took over the management of the farm of Monkshill in Aberdeenshire. Anderson was made an LLD from Aberdeen University in 1786. He was a friend and supporter of Jeremy Bentham, and corresponded with Sir John Sinclair of Ulbster, Caithness. Anderson, after moving from Aberdeenshire to Edinburgh in 1783, began to publish a weekly paper, The Bee, which ran from 1790 to 1794. From 1797 Anderson lived in Middlesex, and That he had become a man of some standing is shown by his publication in 1800 of a selection of his correspondence with George Washington. He continued to write, producing a monthly journal from 1797 to 1802 called Recreations in Agriculture, Natural History, Arts and Miscellaneous Subjects. (DNB)The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography states that Anderson's most striking characteristic was the combination of an intense interest in the practical working of some machine or object with a strong grasp of theory. He was an early adherent of the principles of political economy, and is held to have been in the subject's mainstream of development. He also carried out various experiments and was noted for his use of the newly designed two-horse plough at Monkshill. His long-term reputation rests on a large body of publications; pamphlets, newspapers, and articles in other people's works He produced many pamphlets, some of them important. Two of his earliest were A Practical Treatise on Chimneys (1776) and Observations on the Means of Exciting a Spirit of National Industry (1777). Condition: The binding is tight and firm. There is slight wear to the extremities, including slight bumping and rubbing. Internally the pages are generally bright with the occasional spotting, most prominent to the first and last few pages. Overall the condition is very good. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Observations on a Late Pamphlet, entitled, "Considerations upon the Society or Order of the Cincinnati," clearly evincing the Innocence and Propriety of that Honourable and Respectable Institution…

Philadelphia:: Robert Bell,. 1783.. Most interesting for the 4 pp of advertisements, which include the announcement for sale of Captain Cook's 1st, 2nd & 3rd voyage, at $4, $16, and $2 respectively. Bell published numerous editions of Thomas Paine's works, and others on the American Revolution. His advertised offer of Cook's 3 voyages appears to be somewhat of an exaggeration - he did publish the first American publication of Cook's 3rd voyage in 1783, which was a reprint of Rickman's account of the 3rd voyage, 1st published in London in 1781. The edition was disparaged in the Gentleman's Magazine as "a miserable edition". The official account of the voyage was not published until 1784. Bell also offers "New Publications just imported from various parts of Europe; also several New Books and Pamphlets Lately printed and now selling, at Bell's Book-store, near St. Paul's Church, in Third Street, Philadelphia." It is also notable that Cook's Voyages constituted three of the 11 books listed in the adverts. Two new publications by Bell receive full-page advertisements - for John Adams "Observations on the Commerce of the American States", published by Bell in 1783. The other is for "Considerations on the Society or Order of Cincinnati..." by 'Cassius', who is supposed to have been Aedanus Burke, one of the Chief Justices of South Carolina, whose pamphlet formed the basis of Mirabeau's work on the subject. The authorship of this pamphlet is ascribed to Stephen Moylan, one of the Founders of the Order of Cincinnati, who signs himself, at the end, "An Obscure Individual." Howes O-9. 8vo pamphlet, 28pp & 4 pp adverts. Later marbled paper wrappers, couple of chipped edges, o/w vgc.

RELATION DÉTAILLÉE DE LA CAMPAGNE DE M. LE COMMANDEUR DE SUFFREN, DANS L'INDE, DU 1er. JUIN 1782. AU 29 SEPTEMBRE SUIVANT

Port-Louis [Mauritius: Nicholas Lambert or François Nicolas Bolle], 1783.. [1],33pp. 12mo. Modern morocco, spine gilt, a.e.g. A fine copy. First edition of this very rare and early Mauritius imprint, published fifteen years after the first press was established there in 1768, recording French Admiral André Suffren's actions against Sir Edward Hughes' British Squadron in the East Indies during the American Revolution. These attacks, famed for their ferocity, provided Suffren with a unique standing among French admirals, and placed him in the front rank of sea commanders of the era. This pamphlet, possibly written by Jacques Jerome Antoine Trublet de Villejegu, documents two of Suffren's four engagements with the British Navy in the Bay of Bengal. Although fought on the other side of the globe, these battles may be considered the final formal engagements of the Revolution which influenced Britain's decision to end the war with the colonies. Suffren had previously been attached to the comte D'Estaing's squadron throughout its operations in North America and the West Indies. These New World activities are also briefly mentioned in the text. An extremely rare 18th-century Mauritius imprint. The NUC records one copy at NYPL, while OCLC lists only the 1970 London reprint. TRAITE DE PAIX ENTRE LE ROI ET LE ROI DE LA GRANDE-BRETAGNE, CONCLU A VERSAILLES LE 3 SEPTEMBER 1783

Paris: de l'Imprimerie Royale, 1783.. 35pp. Quarto. Later marbled boards, leather label. Fine, untrimmed. The official French printing of the final treaty of peace between France and England in the American War of Independence, concluded Sept. 3, 1783, the same day as the final peace between the other powers in the conflict. Because of the French naval setbacks in 1782, the treaty resulted in little territorial loss for England, and the powers returned each other's Caribbean possessions. Furthermore, England's claims to Newfoundland were maintained, and mutual fishing rights off the Canadian coast were agreed upon. The NUC and OCLC together locate nine copies of this scarce printing. DAVENPORT 171. SABIN 96557. OCLC 25450771, 21984761.
