. Paris, Rue Hotel Serpente, 1783. 8vo. viii, 208 pp., one wood-engraved floral text vignette. Original paper boards, 20th century quarter paper spine with printed paper label.* Rare first edition of one of the author's most important books, which deals with the volcanoes of the Lipari Islands in southern Italy. DSB: "Dolomieu (1750-1801), the eponym of the Alpine region (which is largely composed of dolomite) was known primarily for his studies of volcanic substances and regions; among his related interests were earthquakes, the structure of mountain ranges, the classification of rocks, and the fashion in which chemical and mineralogical studies could be applied to historical interpretation of the earth." Dolomieu was the first to study the lavas, loose ejecta, and sublimations (i.e., the products of volcanoes), and to compare these with other rocks. He confirmed the igneous origin of basalt and supported the proposition that volcanic products constitute a significant proportion of the earth's feature. Firs few leaves marginally damp stained, otherwise a very good copy. DSB IV p.150; Ward and Carozzi, 668..

2 vols. 4to. I. 5 folding plates. II. 9 folding plates. Contemporary calf. First French edition of this important contribution to naval science by Spanish geometrician and naval officer, Jorge Juan Y Santacilla, originally published in Spanish at Madrid in 1771. Among other notable accomplishments the author participated in the famous joint French-Spanish expedition to Peru in 1735 to measure an arc of the meridian near the equator, founded the astronomical observatory at Cadiz, and established the Friendly Literary Society, the forerunner of the Royal Society of Sciences of Madrid. "His combination of theoretical learning and practical experience enabled Juan, in his Examen maritimo, to provide a considerable base for the improvement of naval science, to refute several empirical theories of navigation, and to establish the fundamental principles of naval architecture. The book is a valuable application of mechanics to naval science." (DSB) The French edition contains significant additions by the translator, French hydrographer, Pierre Lévêque [1746-1814].

Small 8vo; pp. VI, 7-117, (1) errata + (2) approbation et privilège; inserted between the erratas and the privilège are 8 leaves from the "Mercure de France" in the same format with a review of the book "Théorie de l'intérêt de l'argent, tiré des principes du droit naturel." by Turgot, Rulié et Gouttes, contemp. full claf binding, spine with simple floral gilding, no gilt lettering or lettering-piece, boards with gilt ornamental border, spine with two tiny worm holes, foot of spine partly chipped, a few leaves with light traces of humidity in lower margin, some slight browning in places, extremities bumped, the ex libris to front past-down (M.Monpoint, Chanoine) indicates that this is a copy in a private binding from the library of a canon. Rare first edition of this essay replying to the ecyclical "vix pervenit", issued by Benedict XIV in 1745. The Abbé Ruel was apostolic prefect of the French colonies in the tropics. According to INED 3993 Ruel regards investments with persons wishing to acquire land or with traders as fair and just.         The Village a Poem in Two Books

London: J. Dodsley, 1783. Quarto, with half-title and final blank; text a little dusted but a good copy in later drab boards, calf spine label defective. First edition of Crabbe's best poem, an unsentimental homage to English country life. It was the work that confirmed his reputation and promise. Written in stirring heroic couplets, the poem was an implicit protest against the enclosure of common land by landowners. Mistakenly regarded as nothing more than a grim cataloguing of the ills of rural life, the opening to the second book is apropos:'No longer truth, though shown in verse, disdain,But own the village life a life of pain;I too must yield, that oft amid these woesAre gleams of transient mirth and hours of sweet repose'.

A Criticism on the Elegy Written in a Country Church-Yard. Being a Continuation of Dr. Johnson's Criticism on the Poem of Gray. Second Edition

Printed for John Ballantyne for Longman Hurst Rees and Orme London. Second edition; the first was published in 1783.. Bookseller's description pasted to the front paste-down; slight foxing; boards a little worn, with some loss at the head of the spine; very good copy.. NCBEL II, 580 & 1153; cf Rothschild 2624; Courtney, page 138. 8vo, original gray boards and printed paper label, untrimmed. An imitation (or parody of sorts) of Johnson's criticism of the poetry of Thomas Gray, written as if it were by Johnson himself. Soon after publication it was discovered this was the work of a professor of Greek at Glasgow, John Young (1750-1820). Boswell said it was "the most perfect imitation of Johnson." Inscribed in ink on the front free endpaper ?Pat. Stuart / By Professor Young of Glasgow.? Leather bookplate of Arthur Gordon Ripley, Denver, on the front paste-down.

Octavo, with seven plates (including two maps, one folding); contemporary French mottled calf, slightly rubbed but a handsome copy, flat spine gilt in compartments. The French visit New Zealand and Tasmania. A lovely copy of this rare book, important for both New Zealand and Tasmania: it gives the first narrative of two significant voyages to the Pacific, including the first and second French visits to New Zealand and the first French visit to Tasmania. 'An exceedingly rare item… [it is] seldom available…' (Davidson). Edited by the Abbé Rochon, the main part of the book gives the only original printed account of the expedition of Marion-Dufresne, commanded by Crozet after his captain's death. This was the only form in which the voyage was published; it did not appear in English until H. Ling Roth's translation of 1891 ({i Crozet's Voyage to Tasmania, New Zealand… in 1771-1772}). The expedition originally set out as a deliberate sequel to Bougainville's, including the plan of returning Autourou, brought to France by Bougainville, to his Tahitian homeland; however he died on the voyage. Their other instructions were to search for "Terra Australis": they actually discovered the Crozet Islands, visited Tasmania, exploring and mapping some of its southern coast and making the first French contact with the Tasmanian Aborigines. They then made a lengthy stay in New Zealand, where after the massacre at the Bay of Islands (when the commander and about twenty other members of the voyage were killed by Maoris) Crozet took over the command. Unaware of Cook's priority, the French laid claim to both Tasmania and New Zealand. 'Crozet's narrative, apart from the drama of its story, has much careful observation on Maori life and custom and, with the reports of Cook and his officers, was virtually the only source material available for 40 years…' ({i New Zealand National Bibliography}). The book also includes as a postscript the first printed account of the earlier voyage of Jean-François de Surville, in which de Surville's ship reached the New Zealand coast and in fact just missed meeting Cook in the {i Endeavour.} At that point de Surville and Cook were the first European visitors to New Zealand since Tasman's charting of part of the coastline in 1642. The only other early account of the de Surville voyage was published some time later (Monneron, {i Voyage des Indes au Perou}, Paris, 1791). Much has been made recently of de Surville's voyage since the publication by Geoffrey Blainey of his {i Sea of Dangers: Captain Cook and his rivals }which emphasised the part played by chance in Cook rather than de Surville having discovered the east coast of Australia. Cook was told of de Surville's voyage only on the journey home when he met Crozet at the Cape. The engravings that illustrate the work include four fine portraits of Maoris as well as a folding map of De Surville's discoveries and small maps of Marion-Dufresne's discoveries both in New Zealand and Tasmania.

Observations on a Late Pamphlet, entitled, "Considerations upon the Society or Order of the Cincinnati," clearly evincing the Innocence and Propriety of that Honourable and Respectable Institution .

Robert Bell,, Philadelphia: 1783 - Most interesting for the 4 pp of advertisements, which include the announcement for sale of Captain Cook's 1st, 2nd & 3rd voyage, at $4, $16, and $2 respectively. Bell published numerous editions of Thomas Paine's works, and others on the American Revolution. His advertised offer of Cook's 3 voyages appears to be somewhat of an exaggeration - he did publish the first American publication of Cook's 3rd voyage in 1783, which was a reprint of Rickman's account of the 3rd voyage, 1st published in London in 1781. The edition was disparaged in the Gentleman's Magazine as "a miserable edition". The official account of the voyage was not published until 1784. Bell also offers "New Publications just imported from various parts of Europe; also several New Books and Pamphlets Lately printed and now selling, at Bell's Book-store, near St. Paul's Church, in Third Street, Philadelphia." It is also notable that Cook's Voyages constituted three of the 11 books listed in the adverts. Two new publications by Bell receive full-page advertisements - for John Adams "Observations on the Commerce of the American States", published by Bell in 1783. The other is for "Considerations on the Society or Order of Cincinnati." by 'Cassius', who is supposed to have been Aedanus Burke, one of the Chief Justices of South Carolina, whose pamphlet formed the basis of Mirabeau's work on the subject. The authorship of this pamphlet is ascribed to Stephen Moylan, one of the Founders of the Order of Cincinnati, who signs himself, at the end, "An Obscure Individual." Howes O-9. 8vo pamphlet, 28pp & 4 pp adverts. Later marbled paper wrappers, couple of chipped edges, o/w vgc. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Errotika biblion.

de l'imprimerie du Vatican, Rome [i.e., Paris or Neuchatel] 1783 - First edition, 8vo, pp. iv, 192; title-page vignette; bound in modern dark brown morocco gilt, a.e.g., by Wood; light wear, a few contemporary manuscript notes, fine. A compendium of curiosities culled from ancient writings in an effort to present indelicate subjects such as onanism, tribadism, etc. in a manner acceptable to the general public. Written while Mirabeau was imprisoned in the castle of Vincennes, the book was, according to Kearney, pursued with such vigor by the authorities that only fourteen copies of the first edition have survived. While the number given is inaccurate, the first edition is scarce. Following a second edition of 1792, Errotika was included in the Papal Index of prohibited books. "A further edition was ordered to be destroyed in 1826 by the Royal Court of Paris, and for 'outrages against public morality and good manners' there were two other prosecutions, in 1856 and 1868," (Kearney). The book was published in several subsequent editions and was included by Apollinaire, along with some of Mirabeau's other prison writings, in his scholarly edition of 1910, issued in the Bibliotheque des Curieux series.         Storia di America [The History of America, in Italian, with 4 hand-colored maps]

Nella stamperia Gatti a spese di Leonardo e Giammaria Fratelli Bassaglia MDCCLXXXIII [1783], In Venezia [Venice] - Second Venice Edition (first Venice edition published 1778) of Antonio Pillori's translation of The history of America (London, 1777), Books I-VIII (complete), on the discovery of America and the conquest of Mexico and Peru. A remarkably fresh, uncut set, complete in four volumes as issued, with all four folding maps colored by a contemporary hand (as with the John Carter Brown Library copy). 8vo: xxiv,240pp, with frontispiece portrait of Columbus and large folding map of the Gulf of Mexico showing Florida, Cuba, Jamaica and farther Caribbean islands; [2],5-328pp, including frontispiece portrait of Bartolomé de las Casas and large folding map of South America; [2],3-359 [p 181 misnumbered "281"; p 304, "204"],[1]pp, with frontispiece portrait of Hernán Cortés and folding map of Mexico; [4],295,[1]pp, with frontispiece portrait of Francisco Pizarro and large folding map of Middle America. Original paper-case bindings with yapped edges and manuscript titles and volume numbers to head of each spine, the text block sewn on tawed tongs (vol. iv with modern replacements). Worming to upper cover, portrait, title page, and map margins of vol. iv now expertly restored by a paper conservationist. Borba de Moraes 740 (for first English edition). "By the autumn of 1769," according to the ODNB, Robertson "began withdrawing books on America from the [Edinburgh] university library. As originally conceived, [his] project was to include the history of Spanish, Portuguese, and British colonization, though Robertson chose first to concentrate on the Spanish, which stemmed most naturally from his study of Charles V. His original intention was to complete the full history of colonization before going to press, but he decided to publish the sixteenth-century Spanish portion alone following the outbreak of hostilities with the British colonies in 1776 . . . On 28 May 1777 the History of America was published in two volumes by Strahan and Cadell in London and by Balfour in Edinburgh to a very positive reception. Its success was even more marked on the continent, where it was considered Robertson's masterpiece . . . With its dramatic sweep of narrative, combined with a provocative confrontation of two very different stages of civilization [Spanish and Native American] and a prose that was more flexible and evocative than that of his earlier books, the History of America is often regarded as Robertson's most interesting, original, and even Romantic work." Borba de Moraes credits Roberston writing the "first history of the discovery and Spanish conquest of America based on ample bibliographical information and documents . . . " N. B.
