Tagli spruzzati. Legatura coeva in gradevole cartoncino decorato a colori. Tagli spruzzati. Essays and Letters on the Most important and interesting Subjects.

London: Printed for J. Bew. 1783 - FIRST EDITION. 2 volumes. 8vo, 185 x 114 mms., pp. [iv], [i] - iii [2], 6 - 204; [iv], 204, contemporary tree calf, spine ornately gilt to a grapes motif, red morocco labels; top of spine volume 2 very slightly chipped, otherwise a fine and attractive set, with the name "Myrtle Perry" on the top margin of the rear paste-down end-paper in volume 2. This catch-all title seems first to have been used in 1739. Essays and Letters also appeared as part of the title of a work called A Dissertation on False Religion, published in 1757, and re-issued in 1761 and 1763. Bew seems to have published this in two issues (unless, as ESTC suggests there are two different works with the same title): ESTC T68676 lists the work without authorial attribution; while ESTC T108056 is a work with a title-page naming J. Yonge as author. I have not been able to find any differences between the two issues, using a BL copy of the anonymous title and the ECCO copy of the issue with title-page naming Yonge. Essay IX suggests that the author is male, but there is otherwise no real clue to his identity. The author confesses that he has published them firstly for his own benefit and hopes that others will find them useful, adding that they should "contain nothing that can give the slightest offence to the three great articles of our happiness, Reason, Religion, and Virtue." Volume 2 begins with a number of letters to "Euphemia" from "Mentor" and contains observations upon marriage and education, as well as justice, truth, etc. There is a curious example of the dialogue form in a dialogue between "friendship" and "love," and another between [sic] "despair," " hope," "patience" and "reason." ESTC T68676 on-line locates five copies in British libraries (L [2 copies], C, E, O) and five in United States libraries: University of Chicago Regenstein Library, University of Illinois Library, Ohio State University Libraries, Rice University Fondren Library, University of Texas, Austin.         SAGGIO SOPRA L'ANTICA STORIA DE' PRIMI ABITATORI DELL'ITALIA.

Società Letteraria 1783 Un volume in 8vo piccolo (11x19 cm) di 254pp - (2).. Fioriture sparse dovute al tipo di carta. Uno strappo alla pagina bianca. Legatura coeva in tutta pergamena (qualche macchia bruna). ?Seconda edizione migliorata e corretta?.

Proposal for County Naval Free-Schools, to be built on Waste Lands . Giving such effectual instructions to Poor Boys, as may nurse them for the Sea Service

London: The Marine Society, 1783. Tall folio, with nine engraved plates, five of them double-page or folding, minor offsetting, small neat library stamps; later half leather on earlier glazed cloth boards, gilt stamp of Inner Temple Library to front board, bookplate of the same Library, above it the original presentation certificate from the Marine Society; a very good copy. Schools and gardens for the service. First edition of a remarkable book: one of about 450 copies prepared for presentation by the Marine Society to influential figures, this copy having been presented to Francis Maseres (1731-1824) the lawyer and mathematician, member of the Royal Society, at one time attorney-general of the Province of Quebec. It later passed into the library of the Inner Temple, the inn of court to which Maseres belonged.Surely the most lavish charity prospectus produced in the eighteenth century, 'at the anniversary meeting of the Marine Society in 1783, Hanway, after the reading of the Proposal's dedication, was thanked "for his great zeal & attention for the public good", and instructed to finish "in the most compleat manner".'The paper was of fine quality, the print was large, the margins wide, and the cost far beyond the Society's expectations. At the General Court's July meeting Hanway was requested to subscribe five guineas for one year as a penalty for his extravagance, and Hanway retorted that in future the Society ought to specify in advance the costs it was willing to accept ... The total cost of printing, binding, and engraving the 1250 copies was approximately ?800, a sum equal at that time to the Society's annuity income for an entire year' (Taylor, Jonas Hanway, founder of the Marine Society, pp. 172-3). In spite of resentment over the cost of the prospectus, however, 'the Society supported Hanway's venture, and in June 1783 about 450 copies of his Proposal were accordingly distributed among privy councillors, lord lieutenants of the counties, important members of parliament, great law officers, admiralty and naval boards, most of the admirals, and some of the more influential of the Society's own governors...'.More copies were ordered to be printed that month for distribution to all the Society's governors and to friends of the Society, but Hanway kept some books in reserve in case Parliament should have need of them' (Taylor p. 175). The scheme put forward by Hanway in the Proposal was eventually 'transmuted by the governors [of the Marine Society] the more modest initiative of establishing a training ship, a plan Hanway initially opposed. The ship was anchored at Greenwich, staffed and ready to receive a first contingent of boys shortly before Hanway died at his home, 23 Red Lion Square, in the early hours of 5 September 1786' (Oxford DNB).The Marine Society and the whole program that it advocates were the work of the one remarkable man, Jonas Hanway, who founded the Society in 1756 and acted as its director for thirty years. Christopher Lloyd has written that 'Hanway must be credited with providing more men for the Navy than any other man in history... Moreover, for twenty-one years he served as a victualling commissioner of the Navy, in which post he supervised experiments in the seaman's diet, with particular attention to foods that might reduce the ravages of scurvy, that great killer of eighteenth-century seamen. In a succession of books and pamphlets he attacked impressment, suggested ways that seaman could be recruited and trained, promoted their welfare, and argued their inestimable value to the British Empire'.Hanway's favourite project was the promotion of training schools for future seamen and in the Proposal he outlined his far-sighted plan on how these could be organised. He suggested that each school, designed to take about a hundred boys each, should be located on 100 to 150 acres of wasteland. There the students would learn to be husbandmen and manufacturers but would also be trained in the theory and practice of seamanship and taught reading and religion. 'The object was to create a kind of working class elite, equally at home on the ship's deck as at the loom or the plough' (Taylor p. 175). The book sets out in some detail how this would be achieved and its contents serve in part as a summary of the naval skills thought desirable to be taught to incoming youngsters in the period just after the Cook voyages.'Hanway's aid to seamen and young Londoners was part of a larger story. Between the beginning of the Seven Years War (1756) and the end of the War of the American Revolution (1783) the charities of London underwent a remarkable transformation. The first war provoked apprehension that the British population was insufficient in size, vigour and training to protect British trade and empire from European competitors, while the second war deprived Britain of a great reservoir of potential seaman, soldiers, and otherwise productive lands. Both wars led to intensified concern for the British poor, considered as a national resource. Assisting the poor multiply and pursue useful employments was not only good for the soul, it was patriotic and prudent. Never had Charity been in better accord with her selfish sisters, the Nation and Property' (Taylor p. xii).

4 p.l., 164, 5 pp. 12mo, mid 19th-cent. half dark blue straight-grained morocco (short crack at foot of upper joint), bound by Antoine Bauzonnet for the Comte de La Bédoyère, uncut. Paris: de l'Imprimerie de Didot l'Ainé, 1783. Limited to 25 copies only, finely printed by Didot on Annonay paper; this is one of the rarest and oddest of all private library catalogues. Mérard (1749-1812), man of letters, was born into a family of great wealth and, for a number of years, was in charge of the residence of the future Louis XIII. After retiring from his public duties in 1782, he concentrated on his growing collection of books and on commissioning editions printed in severely limited numbers. Guigard wrote (Vol. II, p. 351): "Sans l'amour des livres, Mérard de Saint-Just serait complètement oublié." There is much truth in this but the catalogue is a fascinating and rare document which keeps Mérard's name alive in the world of bibliophily. The catalogue is an odd combination of books which were present in his library, books no longer in his library, and books which he desired for his library (including some books which could be imaginary; see below). His collection was not large but fine. Mérard did not have the taste for editio princeps (except for Aldines) but preferred the best editions with careful editing. The catalogue describes 513 items, each with details regarding binding and prices paid. In the Preface, which alone would justify reprinting for his extraordinary views on book collectors, and in his concluding remarks on pp. 161-163, he sets out his main interests, foremost among them fine bindings, listing eight binders whose works he had acquired or himself commissioned: Padeloup, Laferté, Derome le Jeune, Chamean, Chaumont, Roger Payne and Baumgarten. He enumerates sixteen sales at which he acquired books, including those of the Pompadour, Boze, Gaignat, Gouttard, Mac Carthy Reagh, and 'Mylord Keri' (i.e. Ker, Duke of Roxburghe) collections. His catalogue is the first in which the binders of the books, whenever known, are mentioned. Mérard has been accused of including in his catalogue the description of books which never existed or which he never owned, but Escoffier convincingly defends him against that charge, though Barbier shows that six of his own works, described as printed editions, were, in fact, in MS. Mérard suffered two major losses from his library which he recounts in this catalogue. During an absence, the pipes in the kitchen leaked, causing serious water damage to the library room below, irreparably destroying 200 of his most precious books. Then, on the 12th of December 1782, the English navy seized a French boat which was carrying 1000 books of Mérard's -- considered by Guigard to be the cream of his collection -- which he had sent to a friend in America (why he had sent them he never explained). These volumes were never recovered. A very fine copy. This copy has the five extra pages at end (often missing) which contain a description of one of the books in the catalogue, the Des Pierres Précieuses of Dutens. This was the first book printed by Didot l'ainé. In addition, completely unrecorded, are the first two leaves in this copy: a half title and title of "Oeuvres," with the date 1782, probably for a reprint of all his writings which was never executed, and to which the "Catalogue" might have served as introduction. With the bookplates of Comte Noël-François-Henri Huchet de La Bédoyère, Jean Furstenberg, and an unidentified engraving of a donkey. ❧ Brunet, III, 1643. Guigard, II, pp. 351-52. Houghton Library, Bibliotheca Chimaerica (1962), p. 7. Taylor, Book Catalogues, p. 92. .

Proposal for County Naval Free-Schools, to be built on Waste Lands . Giving such effectual instructions to Poor Boys, as may nurse them for the Sea Service

The Marine Society, London 1783 - Tall folio, with nine engraved plates, five of them double-page or folding, minor offsetting, small neat library stamps; later half leather on earlier glazed cloth boards, gilt stamp of Inner Temple Library to front board, bookplate of the same Library, above it the original presentation certificate from the Marine Society; a very good copy. It later passed into the library of the Inner Temple, the inn of court to which Maseres belonged. Surely the most lavish charity prospectus produced in the eighteenth century, 'at the anniversary meeting of the Marine Society in 1783, Hanway, after the reading of the Proposal's dedication, was thanked "for his great zeal & attention for the public good", and instructed to finish "in the most compleat manner". 'The paper was of fine quality, the print was large, the margins wide, and the cost far beyond the Society's expectations. At the General Court's July meeting Hanway was requested to subscribe five guineas for one year as a penalty for his extravagance, and Hanway retorted that in future the Society ought to specify in advance the costs it was willing to accept ? The total cost of printing, binding, and engraving the 1250 copies was approximately ?800, a sum equal at that time to the Society's annuity income for an entire year' (Taylor, Jonas Hanway, founder of the Marine Society, pp. 172-3). In spite of resentment over the cost of the prospectus, however, 'the Society supported Hanway's venture, and in June 1783 about 450 copies of his Proposal were accordingly distributed among privy councillors, lord lieutenants of the counties, important members of parliament, great law officers, admiralty and naval boards, most of the admirals, and some of the more influential of the Society's own governors?'.More copies were ordered to be printed that month for distribution to all the Society's governors and to friends of the Society, but Hanway kept some books in reserve in case Parliament should have need of them' (Taylor p. 175). The scheme put forward by Hanway in the Proposal was eventually 'transmuted by the governors [of the Marine Society] the more modest initiative of establishing a training ship, a plan Hanway initially opposed. The ship was anchored at Greenwich, staffed and ready to receive a first contingent of boys shortly before Hanway died at his home, 23 Red Lion Square, in the early hours of 5 September 1786' (Oxford DNB). The Marine Society and the whole program that it advocates were the work of the one remarkable man, Jonas Hanway, who founded the Society in 1756 and acted as its director for thirty years. Christopher Lloyd has written that 'Hanway must be credited with providing more men for the Navy than any other man in history? Moreover, for twenty-one years he served as a victualling commissioner of the Navy, in which post he supervised experiments in the seaman's diet, with particular attention to foods that might reduce the ravages of scurvy, that great killer of eighteenth-century seamen. In a succession of books and pamphlets he attacked impressment, suggested ways that seaman could be recruited and trained, promoted their welfare, and argued their inestimable value to the British Empire'. Hanway's favourite project was the promotion of training schools for future seamen and in the Proposal he outlined his far-sighted plan on how these could be organised. He suggested that each school, designed to take about a hundred boys each, should be located on 100 to 150 acres of wasteland. There the students would learn to be husbandmen and manufacturers but would also be trained in the theory and practice of seamanship and taught read [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

La Course des Chevaux" from Le Monument du Costume

"Among the Greatest Achievement of the worldís graphic art" -Ray La Course des Chevaux (Original engravings from Le Monument du Costume). Paris: Prault, 1783. 1783. Sigmund Freudenberg & Jean Michel Moreau le Jeune. Engraving on laid paper (12 3/4" x 16"). With large margins, slight chipping. Very lightly browned, slight. A very good impression. Le Monument du Costume is a series of fine engravings which was created to record the glory of the late 18th century French nobility by depicting the polished manners, clothes and lavish surroundings of the Bourbon court. The original printing consisted of three series with a total of 36 engravings. The prints are rich with details of elegant couture. Gordon Ray notes, "The plates are large in scale and masterly in conception. Though they are finished to the last detail, there is a superb naturalness about them unequaled elsewhere in eighteenth-century illustration. (They are imbued with) an effortless charm which makes these scenes of high society the most convincing validation of Talleyrand's observation that ìno one who had not lived in France in the years before the Revolution knew how how sweet life could be." [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Lectures on Rhetoric and Belles Lettres.

London: Printed for W. Strahan. 1783 - FIRST EDITION. 4to,295 x 230 mms., pp. viii, 496; [iv], 550 [551 - 567 Index, 568 blank], engraved portrait of Blair as frontispiece in volume 1, entirely uncut, contemporary quarter calf, black morocco labels; marbled boards (very worn and faded); tear in C1 volume 2 repaired, but a decent copy with the contemporary autograph "Anderson Smk" on the title-page of volume 1, and on the front paste-down end-paper of volume 2 the early 19th century bookplate for S. Haward's Circulating Library, No. 4 Colonade, Cheltenham. The first review of Blair's admired and frequently-reprinted book came in the Monthly Review, in which the reviewer affirmed that Blair had exemplified a "happy and singular union of taste and philosophy [and had] supplied a great defect in the science of criticism." It also made a "valuable addition to the polite literature" of the late 18th century. A long and thorough review in The Critical Review 1783 was not so complimentary and concluded that there "were many inaccuracies of style in these Lectures. The passages, which we have now cited, will be sufficient to justify this observation; and may serve in some respect to show, that the Eloquence of this country has not yet fixed her residence on the north side of the Tweed. Some of these improprieties may be thought too trivial to deserve the attention of a celebrated author, and others may probably be defended by analogy, or the example of preceding writers. But the greater part of them are real violations of grammar, or of that purity, propriety, and precision, which Dr. Blair himself has justly recommended." [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Elements of Jurisprudence, Treated of in the Preliminary Part of a.

1783 - "The Complement of Sir W. Blackstone's Commentaries" Wooddeson, Richard [1745-1822]. Elements of Jurisprudence, Treated of in the Preliminary Part of a Course of Lectures on the Laws of England. London: Printed for T. Payne and Son, at the Mews Gate, 1783. [iv], 118 pp. Quarto (10-1/2" x 8-1/2"). Contemporary calf, blind fillets to boards, lettering piece and blind fillets to spine. Some rubbing to extremities, corners bumped and somewhat worn, front board just beginning to separate but secure, rear joint starting. Two early armorial bookplates (of Henry C. Compton Esq. Manor House, Lyndhurst, and Scrope Berdmore, S.T.P. Coll. Mert. Custos, 1790) to front pastedown. Offsetting to endleaves, interior otherwise fresh. A nice copy. * First and only London edition. Wooddeson was elected a Vinerian Scholar in 1766, became a Vinerian Fellow in 1776 and was Vinerian Professor from 1777 to 1793. He was steeped in Blackstone's work, and he strove to supplement it. "Dr. Wooddeson's Lectures form, in a measure, the complement of Sir W. Blackstone's Commentaries, for he supplies some deficiencies in the production of his predecessor, and treats more in detail, some topics, but slightly noticed by him. Though of acknowledged merit, as to learning, method of arrangement, and accuracy of rules, they do not seem to have attained so great a reputation as their real worth entitles them to. In point of style, and beauty of narration, they follow the Commentaries, haud non passibus auquis" (Marvin). Holdsworth describes each chapter in detail and calls this work a very useful book on legal theory. This book had a second edition published in Dublin in 1792. Marvin, Legal Bibliography 745.
