A General History of Connecticut, from its First Settlement under George Fenwick, Esq., to its Latest Period of Amity with Great Britain; including a Description of the Country, and many curious and interesting anecdotes. To which is added, an Appendix, wherein new and the true Sources of the present Rebellion in America are pointed out; together with the particular Part taken by the People of Connecticut in its Promotion. By a Gentleman of the Province.

Printed for the author, London 1781 - x, 2, 2*, 3-436 pp. 8vo. Contemporary tree calf, rebacked to style. Peters was the first to popularize. the term 'Blue Laws'. "An entertaining but wholly untrustworthy account of Connecticut by an exiled and embittered Tory. Fiction and fact are so run together in the narrative that their separation is well-nigh impossible. The most famous part of the book is the alleged code of New Haven laws popularly called "Blue laws," (Larned, Literature of American History, p. 88). The entry in the Church Catalogue (V. 5, pp. 2317-2319) notes: "Peters, a native of Hebron Connecticut. was a Loyalist during the Revolution. He made himself so obnoxious by his prominence and activity as such, that he was presented with a coat of tar and feathers and permitted to visit England for his health.[where he remained until 1802]. His apocryphal history of Connecticut is a remarkable tissue of misstatements and exaggerations, not to say of malicious falsehoods." Howes calls the work a "false and vicious misrepresentation." Sabin notes that the first edition is "very rare." Provenance: Illustrated bookplate of Justin George Turner (1898-1976), highly respected historian, author, and collector of Lincolniana, co-author of 'Mary Todd Lincoln: Her life and letters' and other works. Sabin 61209. Howes P262. Church 1183. Lowndes II: 472. Larned: 1006. ESTCT122416. Extremities rubbed, a few short tears to front flyleaf, bookplate on free front end-paper, neat ownership signature to title, clean with wide margins, a very good copy. [Attributes: First Edition]

Mémoires Sur La Dernière Guerre De L'Amérique Septentrionale, Entre La France Et L'Angleterre.

Yverdon: 1781. - 3 Volumes. 12mo. pp. xli, [blank leaf], 184; 2 p.l., 308; 2 p.l., 379, [1]. complete with all 3 half-titles. 3 folding engraved maps & plans. woodcut title vignettes & ornaments. contemporary sprinkled calf (there are several small wormholes in the spines & some intermittent modest toning, but these are really minor imperfections - this is a very nice set). a few old neat red pen markings on large map. First Edition of the most important contemporary French authority on the Seven Years' War, written by a prominent participant in the conflict. A professional French soldier and engineer, Pouchot came to Canada in 1755 with the Béarn regiment. He was initially posted to Fort Frontenac (Kingston, Ontario), where the superior quality of the entrenchments which he constructed led Governor Vaudreuil to entrust him with the rebuilding of the defences of Fort Niagara. Following exemplary service in the capture of Chouagüen (Oswego) in 1756, Pouchot was appointed by Vaudreuil, on the advice of Montcalm, commandant of Fort Niagara, being the first officer in the French regular army to hold the post. In this position he managed to attract many Indian allies to the French cause and also effected the completion of the defences. Replaced in command by Captain Jean-Baptiste Mutigny de Vassan of the colonial regular troops through back-room intrigues, Pouchot next participated in the successful defence of Carillon (Ticonderoga) against James Abercromby in 1758. He was subsequently awarded two further pensions, was chosen to act as geographer for Governor Vaudreuil, acted as an adviser to Montcalm on the defence of Canada, and was reinvested with the command of Fort Niagara. However, in July of 1759, he was forced to surrender that major strategic French stronghold to Sir William Johnson. "The loss of Fort Niagara, believed by many to be impregnable, meant that the French had lost control of the vital portage linking Lake Ontario with the posts of the upper lakes." (DCB) Following an exchange of prisoners, Pouchot returned to Montreal, and early in March 1760, was given command of Fort Lévis (Galop Island in the St. Lawrence near Ogdensburg, New York). After an heroic defence against overwhelming odds, Pouchot surrendered this 250-man garrison to General Amherst in August of 1760, although he succeeded in delaying the British army's descent of the St. Lawrence River by thirteen days. Repatriated to France after the fall of Montreal, Pouchot found himself accused of having shared in the corruption that contributed to Canada's downfall. While his Mémoires were written hastily with motives of self-vindication and exaggerate his role in events, they are a valuable record of the war, particularly of the sieges of Forts Niagara and Lévis. Pouchot discusses the low morale of the French troops, the corruption in the colonial administration, notably the transgressions of Bigot, Cadet, Le Mercier, and Péan, and also provides, in the third volume, lengthy and detailed accounts of the topography of Canada, and native warfare, manners and customs. The engraved plates include a plan of Fort Niagara and Pouchot's defences, a map of part of the St. Lawrence, showing Fort Lévis, the adjacent islands and the position of Lord Amherst's flotilla, and a large map, entitled 'Carte des Frontières Françoises et Angloises dans le Canada depuis Montréal jusque au Fort Du Quesne'.         STATE OF NEW-HAMPSHIRE. IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, APRIL 5th, 1781. WHEREAS THE PRESENT SITUATION OF AFFAIRS IN THIS STATE MAKES IT NECESSARY THAT A FULL AND FREE REPRESENTATION OF THE INHABITANTS THEREOF SHOULD MEET IN CONVENTION FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE OF FORMING AND LAYING A PERMANENT PLAN OR SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT.

[Exeter. ]. 1781 - Broadside, 12 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches. Some creasing. Small hole, with loss to two words. Very minor foxing. Contemporary ink inscription on verso: "March & April 1781 No. 2." Overall very good. New Hampshire broadside, announcing an important constitutional convention. In January 1776, New Hampshire became the first of the thirteen colonies to adopt a constitution and create an independent commonwealth government. The 1776 constitution, however, had not been submitted to the people, and it severely limited the ability of most New Hampshire citizens to participate in the selection of their representatives. The present broadside, implicitly noting this problem, calls for the different towns and districts of the state to choose delegates to convene for the drafting of a new constitution. Numerous conflicts and amendments caused the convention to last for over two years, and the constitution was rejected by the people of the state four times before it was finally approved and put into effect in June 1784. The constitution itself greatly expanded manhood suffrage in the state, included an extensive bill of rights, and is notable as one of the earliest documents establishing the republican form of government adopted by the Framers in Philadelphia in 1787. NAIP records three copies. EVANS 17250. WHITTEMORE 303.

Compte rendu au Roi, au Mois de Janvier 1791.

De L'Imprimerie Royale,, a Paris, 1781 - 7 opere in un vol. in-4° antico (264x198mm), legatura coeva p. pelle marrone con dorso a 5 nervetti recante un titolo in oro su tassello rosso e, entro scomparti, filettature e fregi vegetali e floreali impressi in oro. Tagli in marmorizzatura verde, sguardie in marmorizzatura policroma. "This must be the bestselling financial statement ever issued. Ironically, its very success cau [Attributes: Soft Cover]

" In 1781 Necker' s famous Compte rendu au Roi appeared, addressed rather to the public than to the head of the state. His popularity increased : the succes of the report, the first of its class, though incomplete, wass great.         LES ANTIQUITÉS D'HERCULANUM AVEC LEURS EXPLICATIONS EN FRANÇOIS.

Paris: Chez David, 1780-1781. - Six volumes, being volumes I, II, IIII, V, VI, and VII (without volume III and volume VIII). With hundreds of illustrations. Contemporary mottled French calf, neatly rebacked in matching style, gilt extra, with gilt leather spine labels. A bit of light scattered foxing, but generally quite clean internally. A handsome set. An absolutely phenomenal association copy of this influential study of the antiquities of the Italian city of Herculaneum, destroyed during an explosion of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. This set of LES ANTIQUITÉS D'HERCULANUM. was given by Thomas Jefferson to his young protege, the painter John Trumbull. Jefferson has inscribed it on the front fly leaf of the first volume, "Th. J. begs Mr. Trumbull will do him the favor to accept this copy of the Herculaneum." Jefferson was instrumental in furthering Trumbull's career at an early stage, and in encouraging him to create his painting of the presentation of the Declaration of Independence. That painting is one of Trumbull's most important and iconic works, and in placing Jefferson at the center of that scene Trumbull helped to cement the Jefferson image in the American mind. Jefferson and Trumbull first met in London in early 1786, when Trumbull was thirty and Jefferson thirteen years his elder. At the time, Trumbull was studying painting under Benjamin West, but was planning to visit Paris to study the artworks available there. Jefferson invited Trumbull to stay with him at his Paris residence, the Hotel de Langeac, and the two quickly became close. In fact, Trumbull joined William S. Smith and Jefferson's secretary, William Short, in the small group of people that Jefferson asked to perform tasks or "commissions" for him. Trumbull lived with Jefferson for five or six weeks at the Hotel de Langeac, and Jefferson encouraged Trumbull in his early historical paintings. Trumbull had brought with him to Paris two of his recent historical paintings, "Death of General Warren at Bunker's Hill" and "Death of General Montgomery at Quebec," which he wanted to arrange to be engraved. It was almost certainly at Jefferson's suggestion and encouragement that Trumbull added the Declaration of Independence to his series of American historical paintings. With Jefferson's assistance and recollection of the event, Trumbull began his painting of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It was Trumbull's placing of Jefferson at the center of his painting, flanked by John Adams and Benjamin Franklin, that helped cement the centrality of Jefferson's role as author of the Declaration in the public consciousness. Merrill Peterson asserts that "In the panegyrics of the Fourth of July.the popularity of Trumbull's masterpiece of historical portraiture, 'The Signing of the Declaration' - Jefferson's authorship of the American birthright was his certain title to immortality." Jefferson espoused Trumbull's talents, and introduced him to important people in Paris, and Trumbull repaid the favor in consequential ways. Jefferson's biographer Dumas Malone writes that "Jefferson was on the most intimate terms with Trumbull until the very end of his stay in France, and he always associated him in memory with what he called 'our charming coterie in Paris.'" That coterie included Maria Cosway, the beautiful and vivacious young wife of the English portraitist, Richard Cosway. Trumbull had already met the Cosways, and introduced them to Jefferson in Paris in August, 1786 at the Halle aux Bleds marketplace. The widowed Jefferson became enraptured with Maria Cosway, and spent a great deal of time with her between August and October, 1786. Trumbull was often with the pair, touring art galleries, attending concerts, walking around Paris and journeying into the countryside. On October 12, 1786, on the occasion of the Cosways return to England, Jefferson wrote Maria Cosway an anguished letter in which he related a debate between "my head and my heart." It was to Trumbull that Jefferson entrusted the deliv

Imper. Akad. Nauk Skt. Peterburg 1781 - 8vo (19.8 x 11.5 cm). Engraved title-page device and engraved tailpiece; title-page trimmed at bottom, occasional light staining. Contemporary pink paper wrappers, with floral pattern in gilt; a bit rubbed. Fine copy in contemporary floral wrappers. The Imperial Academy of Sciences had been charged with producing these calendars from 1726 and guarded the privilege jealously. In 1780, the Senate had issued a law re-emphasing the Academy's monopoly, after Kh. F. Kleen, the owner of the Artillery and Engineering Department's press, had issued calendars for that year. Kleen was forbidden to sell his calendars and forced to surrender them to the Academy. The calendar includes a table of important religious dates, tables of relative distances within the Russian Empire and a section on noteworthy events for the year 1780-81, compiled by Login Ivanovich Bakmeister, the first Russian bibliographer. The first section contains blank tables for the calendar's owner to complete with his own observations; two of these, for January and February, have been removed, while others have been completed and left in place.         Representation of the Death of Capt. Cook

London: S.A. Cumberlege, July 1, 1781. Engraving, 180 x 215 mm (plate size), professionally laid down on india paper, early folds as always; slight edge wear but a good impression, mounted. Early version of the image. Early and significant representation of the death of Captain Cook: although based on John Webber's original painting, this engraving predates the more famous Bartolozzi engraving with which Webber's name is now inextricably linked. This is the earliest recorded version of the print, and seemingly the earliest public representation of the infamous scene to be based on official witness accounts. As Forbes explains, this plate was originally issued to accompany a five-page article entitled 'A Succinct Account of the Life and Voyages of Captain James Cook', printed in the Universal Magazine for June 1781 (see Forbes 38). What is fascinating about this rather naïve popular print, then, is that the 1781 date of publication is at least a year earlier than the earliest imprint details on any of the large format representations of the death of Captain Cook engraved after Webber's original by Bartolozzi. Indeed, this is the earliest representation of Cook's death to be based on an official report, although at least one fanciful version is known from a German magazine of 1780.Although simplified and not as accomplished as Webber's image, key scenes show distinct borrowing, whether it is the stance of Cook (although his grip on the rifle is markedly different), the prow of the boat visible at left, the pose of the Hawaiian seen raising the dagger, even the dominant positioning of a pair of palm trees. Given that Webber was thought to have been working on the scene from 1781 at the latest, and given that he was famous for inviting any number of guests to view his sketches and see his atelier, it is apparent that this engraving was prepared by an artist who had access to Webber's working sketches. This is strongly implied in the full title of the original article in the Universal Magazine, which notes 'with an exact representation of the death of that celebrated navigator communicated by respectable authority and elegantly engraved on copper.' The printer S.A. Cumberlege was the successor to J. Hinton and married Hinton's widow. Beddie knew copies in the Mitchell and Dixson collections, and a copy is also recorded in the collection of Nan Kivell, now held at the National Library of Australia.

A Plan of Rock Fort in Jamaica

Joseph Dixon, 1781. AN EARLY EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY MANUSCRIPT PLAN OF ROCK FORT, JAMAICA Watercolor with pen and ink on paper Paper size: 20 1/2" x 29 1/2"; framed size: 32" x 41" Signed and dated l.l.: Joseph Dixon 26th Septm 1701 of the 4th Class Jamaica has a vivid and painful history, marred since European settlement by an undercurrent of violence and tyranny. Christopher Columbus first landed on the island in 1494, when there were perhaps 100,000 peaceful Arawak Amerindians who had settled Jamaica around 700 AD. Spanish settlers arrived from 1510, raising cattle and pigs, and introducing two things that would profoundly shape the island's future: sugar and slaves. By the end of the sixteenth century the Arawak population had been entirely wiped out, suffering from hard labor, ill-treatment and European diseases to which they had no resistance. In 1654 an ill-equipped and badly organized English contingent sailed to the Caribbean. After failing to take Hispaniola (present day Haiti and the Dominican Republic), they turned to weakly defended Jamaica. Despite the ongoing efforts of Spanish loyalists and guerilla-style campaigns of freed Spanish slaves (cimarrones - 'wild ones' - or Maroons), England took control of the island. Investment and further settlement hastened as profits began to accrue from cocoa, coffee, and sugarcane production. Britain was constantly at war with France or Spain, and effective control of the island was entrusted to buccaneers, a motley band of seafaring miscreants, political refugees and escaped criminals, who committed themselves to lives of piracy against the Spaniards. . The Conduct of the Understanding by John Locke, Esq. To which is added, an Abstract of Mr. LockeÕs Essay on Human Understanding

Cambridge: Printed by J. Archdeacon Printer to the University, 1781. 8vo, [viii], 292, 4 [ads] pp. With list of subscribers, mostly consisting of Cambridge names. Contemporary-style calf, red label. A very good, large copy. Michael Thompson notes of his copy: Ã’First edition thus; first issue, on good quality watermarked paper (a second issue was on larger, unwatermarked sheets). Of the Conduct of the Understanding first appeared in 1706 as part of Posthumous Works. Lord Gilbert's influential abridgment first appeared in 1709. The Conduct is one of the most important of Locke's posthumous publications. It was designed for young men who are educating themselves. "It can be read either as an extension of the Essay, indicating the practical implications of the doctrines there set forth, or it can be read as an addition to Locke's educational writings, extending and in some measure complementing the account of education given in Thoughts [on Education]. It can also be read for itself, as a practical manual on 'clear thinking,' a statement of the pitfalls that lie in the road to truth and the means by which the mind can be trained to avoid them" (Francis W. Garforth in his preface to the work, Classics in Education Series No. 31). Attig 730. Yolton 304. ESTC T109720 (14 locations US).
