Artist: Bonne Rigobert ca ; issued in: Paris; date: ca1780 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 29 x 45; - description: Map shows the north and sout pole with description; - vita of the artist: Rigobert Bonne (1727?1795) was one of the most important cartographers of the late 18th century. In 1773 Bonne succeeded Jacques Nicolas Bellin as Royal Cartographer to France in the office of the Hydrographer at the Depôt de la Marine. Working in his official capacity, Bonne compiled some of the most detailed and accurate maps of the period. Bonne?s work represents an important step in the evolution of the cartographic ideology away from the decorative work of the 17th and early 18th century towards a more detail oriented and practical aesthetic. With regard to the rendering of terrain Bonne maps bear many stylistic similarities to those of his predecessor, Bellin. However, Bonne maps generally abandon such common 18th century decorative features such as hand coloring, elaborate decorative cartouches, and compass roses. While mostly focusing on coastal regions, the work of Bonne is highly regarded for its detail, historical importance, and overall aesthetic appeal.

Kaum stockfleckig. Gutes Exemplar. – Goed. IV 1, 4, 32. Leithäuser 427. Borst 395. [Attributes: First Edition]

The History and Lives of the most Notorious Pirates, and their Crews ... the third edition

London: Sabine and Son, 1780. 12mo. (7 x 4 inches). 96pp. 15 woodcut full-page illustrations. Publisher's wrappers, upper wrapper with a large woodcut portrait of Capt. Martel (repeated from the illustration on p. 27), lower wrapper with publisher's adsScarce 18th-century, illustrated chapbook edition of Johnson's "Lives of Pirates"This fascinating work, first published in 1724, was an instant success. The work remained in print in various languages throughout the 18th and 19th centuries - with over 30 editions being published before 1900. It now serves as one of the most important contemporary printed sources for information about the British pirates of the first decades of the 18th century. It includes chapters on all the great ones: Captain Avery, Edward Blackbeard Teach, Steed Bonnet, Bartholomew Roberts, Henry Morgan and others. Also includes chapters on two female pirates, Mary Read and Anne Bonny."This work is considered a sequel to Exquemelin's Bucaniers of America, and most of the pirates it records operated in the West Indies and American waters ... Nothing is known of the author who called himself Captain Johnson, and the name may be an assumed one. Beginning in 1724, and continuing to the present day, books on pirates have appeared under his name. There is no evidence to support the idea that Johnson was an actual pirate, even though his accounts seem remarkably accurate. There also appears to be little substance to the coincidence that a contemporary dramatist of the same name wrote a play, The successful pyrate, about a popular hero Captain Avery. J. R. Moore identified Captain Johnson as Daniel Defoe ... , but this was contested by P. N. Furbank and W. R. Owens in 1988, as well as by David Cordingly in a 1998 edition of Johnson. If the author was Defoe, it is interesting to note that he also wrote an elaborate review of the work" (Hill).Others, including his bibliographer Moore, have attributed the work to Daniel Defoe based on the internal relationship to his works of proven authorship (cf. J.R. Moore, Defoe in the pillory. 1939. p. 126-188). The National Maritime Museum notes that there is "considerable evidence' to suggest that 'Johnson may well have been a nom de plume used by Daniel Defoe" (Piracy & Privateering p. 83).This edition not recorded by ESTC and with only one example in OCLC.

Numerose tabelle a p. pag. e 3 tabelle ripiegate f.t. John Adams Repeats Good Battle News Including Capture of 55 British Ships, but Warns Not to Expect Peace: "The Heads of a King and Ministers is at Stake."

Amsterdam 1780 - Autograph Letter Signed, to William Churchill Houston. Amsterdam, Netherlands, September 17, 1780. 2 pp., with integral blank with recipient's docket, 7 1/2 x 9 in. "You will not mistake this for a Promise or an Hope of Peace. This cannot be. The Heads of a King and Ministers is at Stake . the Capture of 55 ships at once by the combined Fleets of France and Spain . have cast down the English Cause to such a degree, as to put them upon the compassionate List, even with some who detest their Tyranny." On the same day that John Adams received news that his fundraising mission to the Netherlands had been approved by Congress, he received more qualified news from William Churchill Houston, a member of Congress from New Jersey. Houston's letter, sent from Philadelphia on July 11, 1780, informed Adams of Charleston's occupation by the British, but also of a reawakening of patriotic spirit "that is fast pervading the whole Comunity, a Spirit which enlivens and encreases every Day."[1] On September 17, Adams responded to Houston in the letter offered here, and presented him with the more immediate news of military victory. Complete Transcript Amsterdam Septr. 17. 1780Sir Last night Mr. Dana[2] arrived here, from Paris and brought me your Favour of the 11. of July. You cannot imagine, Sir how much Pleasure, this Letter gave me. I shall make a good Use of this and every other authentic Information, in order to prevent the unfavourable Impressions, you are aware of. It has been my greatest Affliction Since I have been in Europe that I have had so seldom Letters from my friends, or Intelligence from America of any Kind. That Business which is every Bodeys, is never done. Most of the Letters I receive tell me, "you will be so fully informed, both officially, and by your other Friends, that I shall not trouble you with public Affairs." And thus it is that I learn, nothing. My Friend Lovel,[3] indeed remembers me, now and then, and considering his indefatigable Labours in other Things, is very good. Heaven reward him for his Virtues, Exertions and sufferings! And Earth too Say I! General Greens[4] Report, of Kniphausens[5] Exploit is much admired in Europe. Yet I am almost wicked enough to wish that even my friend Green had been beaten, because his defeat would have insured the Captivity of Kniphausen and all his Banditti. The late Accounts from America, from all Quarters, have had a good Effect in Europe. And the Capture of 55 ships at once by the combined Fleets of France and Spain, with the Captures by Don Barcelo[6] and that of the Quebec Fleet, have cast down the English Cause to such a degree, as to put them upon the compassionate List, even with some who detest their Tyranny. You will not mistake this for a Promise or an Hope of Peace. This cannot be. The Heads of a King and Ministers is at Stake, in the negotiation for Peace, at least they Suspect so. The new Parliament, will not alter the System, unless it should make it more insidious. As to Money, I can promise nothing but my Utmost Exertions to procure it. It is lucky that I had been here 4 or 5 Weeks before my Commission arrived, because I have had an opportunity to reconnoitre the Country. Mr. Searle,[7] shall have every Attention and Assistance, from me that may be in my Power.I most earnestly request the Continuance of your Correspondence, and remain, with the highest Esteem, sir your very humble svt John AdamsIn 1780, Adams travelled to Holland on a mission to secure war financing. A Massachusetts Yankee who had struggled with the torturous intrigue of the French Court two years earlier, Adams proved much more effective in Amsterdam. On September 16, Francis Dana arrived there from Paris with two letters for Adams. The first brought news that Congress had approved Adams' mission. The second, from William Churchill Houston, informed Adams of the loss of Charleston, but also emphasized an unprecedented revival of patriotism. Adams's retu. (See website for full description)

The State of the Prisons in England and Wales, with preliminary observations, and an account of some foreign prisons and hospitals

William Eyres; and sold by T. Cadell. and N.Conant. London, Warrington 1780 - Octavo, with ten folding engraved plates including seven highly detailed architectural plans; a superb copy in original condition, edges completely uncut, in original boards, spine lettered in ink preserved in a quarter morocco case. A very fine copy of the second and best edition of John Howard's exhaustive and highly influential examination of the prisons of Britain and Europe, considerably enlarged from the first edition of 1777 and with an additional seven engraved folding plates. Howard's criticism of British gaols was contemporary with recent discoveries in the Pacific, marking IT out as one of the fundamental works in the debate that would culminate in the establishment of the penal colony at Botany Bay.Howard's study is a landmark in the history of criminology. Like his successor Jeremy Bentham, Howard took great interest in the architecture of prisons and demonstrated that an improvement of the penal environment could promote rehabilitation. The extended series of plates prepared for this edition includes seven detailed plans of existing prisons including Newgate and the Bastille. In 1773 Howard accepted the office of high sheriff of Bedford and was appalled by the conditions in the local gaol. As a result, he began an exhaustive examination of British gaols and in 1774 gave evidence to a parliamentary committee which legislated for gaolers to be paid a fixed salary to minimise their extorting money from prisoners, while all those detained without charge were immediately released. Howard continued to agitate for better food and medical care and launched a systematic inspection of British and continental gaols. The State of Prisons is a rich source of statistical data and detailed description alike. Interestingly, this second edition expands upon the condition of the Thames hulks based on a series of visits made in 1779. Howard reports that the pursers' weights were doctored for personal gain and that new rations of cloth and bedding had been issued specifically for his visits to the Justicia and her sister hulk the Censor. He reports horrific mortality rates on the hulk Justicia: between August 1776 and March 1778 a staggering 176 of the 632 prisoners had died. The appalling conditions and vice on the hulks led to their widespread condemnation and calls for transportation as a preferable state of affairs. He draws comparisons between the elimination of scurvy at sea and maintaining the health of prisoners and refers to the scholarship of Sir John Pringle and James Lind, both eminent contemporary physicians of the scurvy problem. Tragically, Howard would die in the Crimea in 1790 from the very prison fever he sought to eradicate. Provenance: Private collection (Sydney). A little appropriate wear to binding; generally in admirable original condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Declaration Signer’s Son Puts Off Love and Business as He Leaves to Join Nathanael Greene’s Southern Army

Philadelphia 1780 - Autograph Letter Signed, to S. [Samuel?] White, November 1, 1780, Philadelphia. 2 pp., 6 1/2 x 8 1/4 in. Complete Transcript Philadelphia Novr 1st 1780Dr Sir I have received your favor of the 5th ultimo, and wish it was in my power to answer it more fully before I leave this, but I shall set out tomorrow for the Southern Army, and have a thousand little things to command my attention before I go. I need not assure you how much I am obliged to you for your letter. You have been informed of my attachment for our friend and may conceive how pleasing the subject was to me tho' I am separated from her by a vast ocean and my profession precludes me from following her, still, if fortune, in her kind moments, shold throw me in her way, nothing could be more favorable to my wishes than to convince her of the sincerity of my affection.I am much obliged to you for your kind offer to interest me in trade if it should be in my power I will become a co-partner, but I believe my attention to military matters will prevent me. I wish to hear from you when you come to Virginia. Your letter will find me at the Head Quarters of the Southern Army. I shall write to our friend, and as you will probably see her from what you hint, will entrust you with the letter. My respects to Mrs N___. and believe me / your friend Lewis MorrisS. White EsqrHistorical BackgroundWhen General George Washington selected General Nathanael Greene to command the Southern Army in October 1780, Greene began preparations to rebuild the Army from Delaware to Georgia. He took command at Hillsborough, North Carolina, on December 3, 1780. As Greene's aide-de-camp, Lieutenant Colonel Lewis V. Morris accompanied Greene to North Carolina. Under Greene's leadership, components of the Southern Army went on to victory at the Battle of Cowpens (January 1781), a loss at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse (March 1781) that cost the British heavily in casualties, and a draw at the Battle of Eutaw Springs, South Carolina (September 1781), that forced the British to withdraw to the defenses of Charleston. One month later, Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown.Lewis V. Morris (1754-1824) was born in New York, the son of Lewis Morris III (1726-1798), who signed the Declaration of Independence. The younger Morris graduated from the College of New Jersey (Princeton University) in 1774. His uncle was Gouverneur Morris, one of the key drafters of the Constitution. Lewis V. Morris served as aide-de-camp to General John Sullivan with the rank of major from 1776 to 1779. He narrowly escaped capture at the Battle of Long Island (August 1776) and was wounded at the Battle of Princeton (January 1777). Promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1778 for his actions in repulsing British forces in Rhode Island, he became aide to General Nathanael Greene in 1779. Late in 1780, when Greene assumed command of the southern army, Morris accompanied him to South Carolina, and later rose to the rank of colonel. He married Ann B. Elliott of Charleston, South Carolina in 1783, and they had eight children. Morris served five terms in the South Carolina General Assembly between 1789 and 1801, and was lieutenant governor from 1794 to 1796. Both he and his wife died at Morrisania, the family's 2,000-acre estate in Westchester County, New York, and were buried in the churchyard of St. Michael's in Charleston, South Carolina.ConditionShort separations at folds with very minor loss to text, faint scattered staining.

[Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
