[Click Below for Full Description]

[DESHIMA] TOSHIMAYA, Bunjiemon.
Nagasaki: Toshimaya, dated An'ei 9, i.e. 1780. Woodblock print measuring 550 x 420 mm., with highlights in contemporary handcolouring; in an excellent modern frame. Rare and beautiful bird's-eye view of Deshima island in the bay of Nagasaki, the compound reserved for traders of the VOC or Dutch East India Company. This is the earliest such view in printed format. This print is also especially interesting as the first recorded Nagasaki-e (pictures from Nagasaki prefecture depicting foreigners) to have been brought to Europe: Titsingh (1745-1812) published a version of it in his Illustrations of Japan (1822).The Dutch traders of the VOC reluctantly admitted to Nagasaki in the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries were confined to the island in the harbour. Only about 200 by 80 metres, it had originally been set aside for the Portuguese as a compromise allowing them to be in Japan but preventing their propagation of Christianity. By this period the minute island was shared between Dutch and Chinese trading houses. The Dutch merchants of the VOC would have been exotic figures: their confinement to Deshima meant that they would barely have been seen by most residents of Nagasaki, let alone other Japanese of the period. The depiction of these exotic foreigners in the Japanese decorative arts began in the eighteenth century, and as well as prints and paintings it can be seen in porcelain by the Imari potters. To enter the artificial island visitors had to pass over a small wooden bridge and undergo a search at a well-guarded gate. To the right of the bridge one can clearly … [Click Below for Full Description]

Giuseppe Antonio REMONDINI (1745 - 1811)

Francesco & Paolo SANTINI (Attivi a Venezia seconda metà del XVIII secolo)
Bibliografia: Tooley, The Mapping of America 104. Dimensioni 650x470." Large folding map as frontispiece, folding view of Maimatschin (Mai-mai-châ?eng), 3 folding charts. With final advertisement leaf; errata printed on p. xiv. First edition of this important work, a compilation of contemporary accounts. Part I of the work is a translation of Johann Ludwig Schultz's Neue Nachrichten (Hamburg and Leipzig: 1776) and the other parts are similarly based on previously published narratives and accounts, principally German. Coxe had been in Russia when he accompanied the future 11th earl of Pembroke on a European tour from 1775 to 1779, during which he verified these accounts with Gerhard Friedrich Müller and Peter Simon Pallas and other eminent Russian experts on the subject. He "also succeeded in securing additional material (for instance the narrative and maps of Krenitzin and Levashev's 'secret' expedition, the first official Russian government expedition since Bering's second expedition of 1741. London: D. Henry, 1780. Octavo (210 x 130 mm). Contemporary speckled calf, spine rebacked to style, titles to red morocco label to spine, raised bands ruled in gilt, thistle motifs stamped in gilt to compartments, double rule frame in gilt to covers, turn-ins tooled in blind, marbled endpapers, edges speckled red. Near-contemporary bookplate of William Sneyd to the front pastedown. A little wear to tips, slight scuffs and scratches to sides, a couple of marks to title label, occasional light foxing to contents, browning to margins of final leaf; a very good copy indeed. With 14 engraved plates, 6 of which are folding. First edition of Volume 50 of The Gentleman's Magazine, featuring "important notices on the progress of Cook's Third Voyage, his death, and inter alia the existence of Hawaii" (Forbes). "Cook earned his place in history by opening up the Pacific to western civilisation and by the foundation of British Australia. The world was given for the first time an essentially complete knowledge of the Pacific Ocean and Australia, and Cook proved once and for all that there was no great southern continent, as had always been believed. He also suggested the existence of Antarctic land in the southern ice ring, a fact which was not proved until the explorations of the nineteenth century. Cook was a brilliant navigator and hydrographer, an excellent administrator and planner, and probably the first sea captain to realise the importance of preserving the health and well-being of his crew. (CALLIGRAPHY). GREGOIRE, L.
[France], October, 1780. Manuscript on paper, folio (495 × 320 mm), 11 leaves (original foliation, ff. 3, 8, partly cropped). 34-40 lines per page, usually in several scripts, elaborate calligraphic headings, 6 decorative roundel initials. Slight corrosion and consequent browning around some of the heaviest inked lines, but no loss. Early (but probably not quite contemporary) paper backed mottled boards. Spine defective, cords slightly loose, but all secure. A series of calligraphic models or exercises of impressive size and quality. The writer, who signs his (or just possibly, her) name, minutely, at the foot of the first leaf, has chosen two edifying texts to transcribe. The first three sheets contain passages (including one on the immorality of duelling) from Varietés serieuses et amusantes of 1765, while the other eight, rather unusually contain letters from a father to a daughter (Émilie), being extracts from Abbé Gerard's epistolary novel Le Comte de Valmont, ou les égarements de la raison of 1774. It would be unusual if this denoted a female scribe, but the choice of these extracts is tantalsing. Each leaf is ruled in leadpoint and bears a large calligraphic cartouche, some have an additional penwork initial roundel and most exhibit a variety of scripts of exceptional neatness and regularity.
