[Germany, 1790/92]. Large 16mo (14.5 x 11 cm). A conjuror's magic flip book (or blow book) with tabs in 5 positions. With 14 full-page engravings of 7 subjects (6 of uniformed soldiers and 1 of tents), plus 5 repeats of each. With the original letterpress instructions in German and French on a single leaf tipped in. Coloured by a contemporary hand. In a contemporary decorated paper wrapper printed from woodblocks in green and ochre paste.

      - Cf. Gumuchian 3843-3850 (examples from France, ca. 1780-1848); Kinderen lazen/Kinderen lezen 647, 663 & 668 (examples from France 1778 & Germany ca. 1850); Stafford & Terpak, Devices of wonder, pp. 252-255. A rare conjuror's "magic book" of uniformed muskateers and cavalry, also known as a flip book or blow book, from the reign of the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold II (1790-1792). Remarkably, even the original printed instructions, in German and French, are preserved. The instructions bear the drop-titles "Unterricht zu diesem Magischen Buch, mit welchem man zehen Veränderungen machen kann" and "Instruction pour ce Livre Magique, avec lequel on peut faire 10 Changemens". The conjuror holds the book by its spine in his left hand so that it faces the audience and flips through it with the thumb and fore-fingers of his right hand. He first does this using the lowest tabs and the book appears to be entirely blank. He then magically changes it (perhaps by blowing on it, tapping it, or saying magic words) and flips through it using the next tab. Now every page shows a Royal Prussian muskateer. He continues with the next tabs to reveal Imperial Russian muskateers, muskateers of the Holy Roman Empire and finally tents with flags. He then turns the book upside down and flips through in the same way. The book again first appears to be blank, then shows cavalry from Prussia, Russia and the Holy Roman Empire, and then the tents again. The Imperial muskateers have an "L" on their hats for the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold II, who reigned only from 1790 to 1792, and the other uniforms are also consistent with this date. Stafford & Terpak notes that no early English examples are known to survive and mentions no German ones, but notes that several Italian and French examples are known from the second half of the 18th century. In very good condition, with even the spine only slightly rubbed. A remarkably well-preserved conjuror's flip book, with even the separate printed instructions.

      - Paris, De Bure, 1780. Two volumes in two. Large 4to (28.9 x 21.2 cm). Two engraved frontispieces, one engraved portrait, 1,786 [lx, 878; 848] pp., 19 [7, 12] engraved plates. Uniform contemporary full mottled calf. Spines rich gilt-ruled and with two gilt-lettered green morocco labels. Boards with gilt-patterned borders and dentelles. Marbled endpapers; light-yellow edges.l This edition, known as the "De Favannes" edition, was published long after the author's death (1765). The engraver and publisher Jacques de Favanne(s) de Montcervelle (1716-1770) and his son, Jaques Guillaume (1759?-1795?) greatly expanded this edition from the original 1742 edition. It is meant to come with an atlas (bringing the number of plates to 80) which, however, is often lacking for some reason. The 19 plates that are present in these text volumes are very well executed and show cone shells, Trochidae, etc. Boards very slightly rubbed, otherwise a fine, clean set in an attractive contemporary binding.         Love for Klubben, oprettet i November 1775.

Hvidberg (1771-1822), viceprovst A. Krag Holm (1767-1851), forfatter Chr. Olufsen (1763-1827), forfatter C. Pram (1756-1821), nationaløkonom S.O. Wolff (1796-1859), apoteker Jens Peter Groth (1783-1832), Knud Lyne Rahbek (1760-1830), professor L.C. Sander (1756-1819) og den norske digter Jonas Rein (1760-1821). [Bakkehussamlingen].

Tabulae regni animalis, omnes VI classes animalium comprehendentes. Tabellen des Thierreichs. Regni animalis classis II Avium ordines I-VI.

      - Augsburg, Kaiserlich Franzische Akademische Handlung [1780-1786]. Folio (52 x 36 cm). 24 contemporary hand-coloured copper engravings and 24 black & white copper engravings. Beautiful, contemporary style, pastiche binding, half calf over paper boards. Richly gilt decorated spine with seven raised bands; gilt ornaments and title.l Extremely rare, especially in this double suite, including contemporarily hand-coloured plates. This is the complete set of ornithological plates. These bird plates bear the printed signature of Gottlieb Friedrich Riedel in the margin. He was born in 1724 in Dresden, Germany and died in 1784 in Augsburg, Germany. He was a well-respected and accomplished porcelain painter and the teacher of Friedrich Kirschner in the Ludwigsburg-based porcelain factory, where he worked from 1770 as a painter of birds, insects and flowers. Friedrich Kirschner was born in about 1748 in Bayreuth, Germany, and died in Augsburg, Germany, in 1788. Complete copies of this work are extremely rare; globally, there is only one known copy in the UB in Augsburg. Other libraries - such as the UB Tübingen, Frankfurt, Staatsbibliothek München, UB Strasbourg, UB Basel, Amsterdam, ÖNB, Library of the British Museum (NH) and the French National Library - only possess incomplete copies. Coloured copies are almost unheard of: the fish and amphibian section of the coloured version has only come to auction once, in 1964; the coloured birds, apparently, have never been auctioned. No known coloured sections exist in any institutional library. Some staining or soiling to plate margins and two marginal paper restorations. The plates with a nice, strong impression and contemporary colouring very well-executed and vivid.       - Amsterdam, Jan Christiaan Sepp, [1780]-1788. Two parts in one. Large 4to (30.5 x 24.0 cm). pp. [ii], 124, with hand-coloured engraved frontispiece and 29 hand-coloured engraved plates. [AND] 172 pp., with hand-coloured engraved frontispiece and 41 hand-coloured engraved plates. Contemporary half calf over speckled boards. Spine with five raised bands, compartments with gilt lines and lettering.l A fine set of these beautifully illustrated entomological works on Hemiptera which are nearly always found bound together. Our "set" contains the general title for both works dated 1780. The work describes the Cicadidae and true bugs of all parts of the world, many from Surinam, the Cape Province, and the Coromandel coast. Caspar Stoll was the first entomologist to devote himself almost entirely to Hemiptera. The two frontispieces are particularly attractive and show a wreath of flowers with insects. Caspar Stoll was born in Hessen-Kassel between 1725 and 1730 and lived in The Hague and later in Amsterdam. William V of Orange-Nassau was the godfather of two of his children. He was "commies ter Admiraliteit" at Amsterdam and published several works on entomology. Jan Christiaan Sepp (1739-1811) was a bookseller and publisher and his publishing house produced some of the finest Dutch natural history colour-plate books of the 18th century. Apart from that he was an entomologist, artist and engraver and wrote, with his father, a large work on Dutch insects, illustrated by himself. He also illustrated the above two works. The first work depicts 173 insects on 29 plates and the second volume depicts 298 insects on 41 plates. The text is in Dutch and French. Cicaden plate XII bound before XI. Provenance: the tiny bookplate of the Municher entomologist Hans W. Taeuber on the front pastedown. Hagen II, p. 199; Horn-Schenkling, 21554; Landwehr 191; Nissen ZBI, 3999 and 4000.

Select Pieces for the Organ [A Second... a Third... A Fourth Set] Performed at the Church of St. George Hanover Square Dedicated to The Right Honble. Lady Mary Duncan by her Ladyships Most Obedient Servant

[London]: Printed for & Sold by the Author, at his House in Hanover Street Hanover Square, 1780. First Edition, Rare. BUC p. 566. RISM K222 (2 complete copies only in the U.S. and a copy of Part I only at the Library of Congress). Keeble was an English organist, theorist and composer. "He trained as a choirboy at Chichester Cathedral under Thomas Kelway, he went to London, where he studied composition and Greek with Pepusch. He was appointed organist at Ranelagh Gardens in 1742, and in April 1744 he became assistant organist to Thomas Roseingrave at St George's, Hanover Square, sharing Roseingrave's salary until the latter retired to Ireland in the early 1750s..." His four volumes of Select Pieces for the Organ (London, 1777-c1780) are in reality collections of multi-movement voluntaries that demonstrate his traditional concept of formal design. In his preface he refers to the 'Obligato stile of writing' of these pieces, drawing particular attention to the use of 'Fuges, Inversions, Canons, Double Descants and the like'. He carefully marked the appearance of each subject to assist comprehension, and emphasized the cumulative effect of contrapuntal ingenuity. Although his stylistic approach was less commonly adopted by younger composers of voluntaries of the time, he strongly endorsed it as being 'proper for the Church'." Stoddard Lincoln and Gerald Gifford in Grove Music Online.. Oblong folio. 18th century marbled boards with small decorative dark red rectangular title label gilt to upper: "Organ : Pieces : By. Handel : & : Keeble." Part I: 1f. (recto title, verso blank), 1f. (Preface), 34 pp. Part II: 1f. (recto title, verso blank), 35-69, [i] (blank) pp. Part III: 1f. (recto title, verso blank), 70-99, [i] (blank) pp. Part IV: 1f. (recto title, verso blank), [i] (blank), 100-135, [i] (blank) pp. With the autograph signature of the composer to the title page of each part. Part II is dedicated to The Vicountess Cranborne, Part III to Lord Viscount Fitzwilliam, and Part III to Miss Wilhelmina King. The title pages to Parts II-IV carry the printed notice that "These Pieces altho' Compos'd for the Organ, are equally improving and entertaining on the Harpsichord." Part I carries a price of "10s:6d." and Parts II-IV "10:6d." The volume originally also apparently contained music by Handel, as evidenced the inclusion of his name on the title label; there is also a contemporary pencilled annotation to the front pastedown referring the Six Fugues HWV 605-610. Binding worn; corners bumped with some loss; crudely rebacked. Slightly worn and browned; small tears to edges of title of Part I; Keeble's signature to titles faded.

Bibliografia: Tooley, The Mapping of America 104. Dimensioni 650x470. An Italian edition of Joseph Nicolas De L’Isle's important map of the north Pacific. De L’Isle spent many years working as a cartographer in Russia, founding the Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg and producing the first Russian Atlas. In 1747, De L’Isle returned to France with a manuscript map of the north Pacific, including information on northeastern Asia, northwestern America and the strait between the two. He produced an engraved map, which was presented to the French Academy of Sciences in 1750. This map was very advanced in some areas, being based on Russian expeditions of 1723, 1732 and 1741, along with Vitus Bering's first and second voyages and the explorations of a number of others such as Tchirkow and Frondat. Unfortunately, the cartography of northwestern America is based on the fictitious account of Admiral de Fonte, showing a huge inland sea, the "Mer de L'Ouest," and waterways leading off towards Baffin's Bay-the long sought for Northwest Passage. Delisle's rendering became the standard for the region until Cook's explorations later in the century. Delisle's map was copied by many publishers, including the Italian Santini, whose map was later issued by Remondini. The Italian versions have a handsome rococo title cartouche balanced by text and images of a native of Kamchatka and one of Louisiana. Copper engraving, contemporary outline colour, in excellent condition. Tooley, The Mapping of America 104. Dimensioni 650x470. Dimensioni

An Abridgment of the History of the Old and New Testament, interspersed with Moral and Instructive Reflections chiefly out of The Holy Father. By J. Reeve

Exeter: Printed by R. Thorn And Sold by Him and T. Lewin. London 1780 - FIRST EDITION of this abridgment. 8vo (in 4s), 173 x 108 mms., pp. [iii] iv - vii [vii Errata], 390, [3] 4 - 178, viii, [8 adverts], contemporary calf, red leather label; slight wear to joints and extremities, but a very good copy, with a ownership inscription on the recto of the front free end-paper that affirms a comment on the volume cited below: "Mary Weld/ Sales House Shepton Mallet Somersetshire/ This book belongs to the Monastery of the / Visitation of our Lady Sales House/ Shepton Mallet Somersetshire/ April 23d 1831." Mary Sales Weld was Mother Superior at the Monastery [sic] from 1810 to at least 1831. The Jesuit and Biblical scholar Joseph Reeve (1733–1820) wrote a number of ecclesiastical and theological works, but also turned out a rather good poem published in 1776, Ugbrooke Park. This abridgment proved to be popular and reached a fourth edition by 1795. However, not everyone was thrilled with the Roman Catholic overtones, and The Monthly Review suggested caution: "In this abridgement of the Sacred History, the reflections, moral and religious, which are interspersed, are sensible, useful and sometimes excellent: But it is necessary to warn our readers, that the principles of Popery are so interwoven with the historical and other passages of scripture, that the unwary may be misled, and brought to imagine that the tenets of the Church of Rome are founded on, or supported by, the Sacred Volume; than which nothing can be more false and erroneous. We therefore wonder, that in books of this kind, if published by Protestants, the exceptionable passages should not be omitted; or, at least, accompanied by some satisfactory guard, and antidote, for the sake of general readers, in a Protestant country." ESTC T150444 locates five copies in these islands, and Newberry and University of Texas in Austin; OCLC adds Pitts Theology at Emory, Cornell, St. Louis. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        C18TH FRENCH CONVERSATION GAME

C18th [circa 1780-90] set of 64 cards [ four sets of 16 cards ] each approx 8 cm x 5 cm, no publisher or date. The cards arranged into four "suits" "We/Nous" "I/Je" "They/Ils" and You/Vous with a sentence or short phrase in English with a translation into French. Presumably, polite ladies would choose cards and challenge each other to provide the translation. The fact that many cards contained sentences pertaining to the pursuit of love must have added a frisson to the occasion, and an opportunity for speculation. We have not been able to find any information about this set and it does not have a box or any rules for play. Condition is Near Fine. One or two are marked; the cards show signs of handling and are slightly bowed.
