Batavia (but Amsterdam?): n.p., circa, 1780. Octavo, 96pp., booksellers label to inner front cover, engraved vignette on the title; uncut in contemporary patterned wrappers fashioned from a booksellers catalogue, handwritten title-label to upper cover. A remarkable eighteenth century pamphlet detailing the political, economic and military conditions in the Dutch East Indies. Although anonymous, the work was written by an evidently well-informed author who provides sensitive strategic insights into the weakness of Dutch interests in the region, stressing their vulnerability to British and French aggression.Translated from a simultaneously issued Dutch edition (Nederlandisch India), the report was written either shortly before or at the beginning of the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War (1780-1784). The unknown author's frank and candid discussion of the weaknesses of the VOC generally and Batavia particularly, has led to much speculation about the intentions of the work. 'The economy was precarious, persons in both Europe and Southeast Asia were Jekyll and Hyde. There were those who tried to warn of VOC troubles but, when corruption reaches the highest places and when statistical cooperation can be secured between production and sales, what to do! The Heeren XVII knew less than they should have known about affairs abroad. They "regulated" to a degree only, whereas the truth of minimal salaried men bringing fabulous fortunes home... was easily and constantly very visible in Asia to anybody who looked. This author was writing from a position of prominence; he too had money; he was equally fluent in Dutch and French: he tried to warn. Where did he print? And - what was his name?' (Smith Diehl, Printers and Printing in the East Indies to 1850: Batavia, 1990, p.151-152).The susceptibility of Batavia to a British or French attack is a central concern and in compelling detail the author outlines the weakness of the various garrisons defending the VOC administrative capital. It is unclear then why the report was immediately rendered into French (as well as English), but these translations did raise the hackles of contemporary commentators in London particularly: was the work in fact some sort of ruse de guerre? The volume is bound in a bookseller's catalogue (from which we can suppose a publishing date sometime around 1780) which has been overprinted in red ink in a striking diamond pattern. The catalogue likely belonged to Geneva bookseller Jean François Bassompierre, whose ticket is pasted down on the inside cover. The title page notes printing in Batavia, although Landwehr suggests very plausibly that it may in fact be Amsterdam. Spine repaired, title page and A2 neatly remounted, very good.

Part I carries a price of "10s:6d." and Parts II-IV "10:6d." The volume originally also apparently contained music by Handel, as evidenced the inclusion of his name on the title label; there is also a contemporary pencilled annotation to the front pastedown referring the Six Fugues HWV 605-610. Binding worn; corners bumped with some loss; crudely rebacked. Slightly worn and browned; small tears to edges of title of Part I; Keeble's signature to titles faded. First Edition, Rare. BUC p. 566. RISM K222 (2 complete copies only in the U.S. and a copy of Part I only at the Library of Congress). Keeble was an English organist, theorist and composer. "He trained as a choirboy at Chichester Cathedral under Thomas Kelway, he went to London, where he studied composition and Greek with Pepusch. He was appointed organist at Ranelagh Gardens in 1742, and in April 1744 he became assistant organist to Thomas Roseingrave at St George's, Hanover Square, sharing Roseingrave's salary until the latter retired to Ireland in the early 1750s."His four volumes of Select Pieces for the Organ (London, 1777-c1780) are in reality collections of multi-movement voluntaries that demonstrate his traditional concept of formal design. In his preface he refers to the ?Obligato stile of writing' of these pieces, drawing particular attention to the use of ?Fuges, Inversions, Canons, Double Descants and the like'. He carefully marked the appearance of each subject to assist comprehension, and emphasized the cumulative effect of contrapuntal ingenuity. Although his stylistic approach was less commonly adopted by younger composers of voluntaries of the time, he strongly endorsed it as being ?proper for the Church'." Johann Daniel Preissler (1666, Nuremberg – 1737) was a notable member of a German artistic family, originating in Bohemia. His children included Johan Martin Preisler, Georg Martin Preisler and Johann Justin Preissler, all artists. Most notable for his portraits, nudes and history paintings, he also produced drawings and frescoes. He was also known beyond Nuremberg for his "Die durch Theorie erfundene Practic" (full title: "Die durch Theorie erfundene Practic oder Gründlich verfasste Reguln deren man sich als einer Anleitung zu berühmter Künstlere Zeichen-Wercke bestens bedienen kann"), a sequence of works on art-theory – the individual works were translated into several other languages and served as textbooks for students such as the Swiss Salomon Gessner right up until the 19th century. By the time of his death in 1737, Johann Caspar Füssli spoke of Preissler and Jan Kupecky as the two most famous Nuremberg artists of the early 18th century. He received his first artistic training in his home town under his father, the history painter and portraitist Daniel Preissler (1627–1665), continuing his education in the studio of Johann Murrer. From 1688 to 1696 he stayed in Italy, including periods in Rome and Venice. In 1705 he became the director of Nuremberg's Academy of Fine Arts, which under his leadership turned into a city institution. In 1716 he founded the Zeichenschule (drawing school), open to "poor people's children" – it proved a great success. With 71 students entering in the first year, its intake was so large that in 1721 Preissler began producing the teaching materials which later became his "Die durch Theorie erfundene Practic" – he had previously only published academic works, such as ones on anatomy. Preissler also wrote on the academically neglected topics such as ornament and flower-drawing (in 1725) and landscape drawing (1739), though throughout his writing he insisted that these were only beginners' lessons.

Octavo (190 x 115 mm). Contemporary quarter brown calf, light green morocco label, smooth spine elaborately decorated in gilt with central floral tools, pink boards, all edges red, 2 pp. errata slip at rear. Woodcut head- and tailpieces, tables in the text. Extremities a little rubbed, tiny chip to head of spine, small . An excellent copy. First edition of the author's advocacy of universal and compulsory conscription as the only certain way to unite citizens and the army. "A career officer since the 1760s, [Joseph Servan (1741–1808)] won notoriety in 1780 with the publication of Le Soldat citoyen, a long and detailed plan for reforming the army. Its central theme foreshadowed the Revolution by urging universal conscription in a nation that would regard its soldiers as citizens" (Historical Dictionary of the French Revolution 1789–1799, Vol. 2, p. 899). Servan upheld his republican views throughout his eventful military and political career. His most notable tenure in office was as minister of war under the constitutional monarchy of 1791–2, a brief appointment during which he dissolved the king's Garde du Corps and had the eighth verse of the Marseillaise removed for being too religious. Johann Samuel Ersch attributed Le Soldat Citoyen to general and military writer Jacques-Antoine-Hyppolyte de Guibert (1743–1790).

Daniel Niklaus Chodowiecki 4 Miniature Etchings 1780

Daniel Niklaus Chodowiecki 4 Miniature Etchings 1780 Size of 3 etchings: 5 x 9 cm. (1.9 x 3.5") Size of fourth one: 3.3 x 6.7 cm. (1.3 x 2.6") Signed on passé partout: D. Chodowiecki 1780 Etchings laid on paper Condition - see carefully photos. Light damping to right edge of the first etching from the top Pale foxing stain to the second one from the top Tears and small foxing stains to passé partout Daniel Niklaus Chodowiecki (16 October 1726 - 7 February 1801) was a Polish - German painter and printmaker with Huguenot ancestry, who is most famous as an etcher. He spent most of his life in Berlin, and became the director of the Berlin Academy of Art. Soon Daniel was able to earn a living by painting. He was admitted to the Berlin Academy in 1764 and became vice-director under Bernhard Rode in 1788. He had found his true calling and became the most famous German graphic artist of his time. His works includes several thousand etchings, usually rather small, and many drawings and paintings. His book illustrations embrace almost all the great classics. His prints represent in great detail the life of the bourgeoisie during the Zopfstil period, a time between Rococo and Classicism. In 1797 Chodowiecki was appointed director of the Academy of Arts in Berlin, where he died on 7 February 1801. The bulk of his work was in illustrating scientific books by Basedow, Buffon, Lavater, Pestalozzi and others. He also painted many portraits of Polish gentry and was interested in Huguenot and Polish history as well, making some paintings on the topic. He was in tune with the developing spirit of the age, and many works reflect the cult of sensibility, and then the revolutionary and German nationalist feelings of the end of the century. In printmaking, he is credited with the invention of the deliberate remarque, a small sketch on a plate, lying outside the main image. These were originally little sketches or doodles by artists, not really meant to be seen, but Chodowiecki turned them into "bonus items" for collectors. Chodowiecki, though speaking only French and German[1] (due to his offices in the Huguenot French community in Berlin he often spoke French), many times also declared his Polish allegiance and had his son Isaac Heinrich, born in Berlin, painted as a very young child with a Polish outfit and haircut. After Partitions of Poland Chodowiecki wrote to Gräfin Solms-Laubach: "From father's side I'm Polish, a descendant of a brave nation which will soon vanish".[2] In a letter to Józef Łęcki, the Polish astronomer, he wrote: "I consider it an honour to be a genuine Pole, even though I am now living in Germany".[3] Because of his mother's and his wife's Huguenot descent he was very close to the Huguenots of Berlin. Nearly all his life and career was spent in Germany, writing in German and living in Berlin from the age of almost 17. Chodowiecki depicted on a 1 million papiermark note (1923). One of his most popular books is "Journey from Berlin to Danzig" (German: "Die Reise von Berlin nach Danzig", 1773) with many illustrations. He purchased a horse rather than going by stage coach. This was his first return after 30 years absence and he went specifically to see his elderly mother and sisters in Danzig again. He made only one more trip to Danzig afterwards, to his mother's funeral. He describes and illustrates towns and people in Pomerania and Prussia on the way.

Account of the Russian discoveries between Asia and America. To which are added, the conquest of Siberia

London: J. Nichols for T. Cadell, 1780. FIRST EDITION. With 4 large folding plates by T. Kitchin and 1 engraved folding plate by Cheevers. Modern quarter calf over boards; preliminary leaves have small waterstain on lower margin and small insignificant chip on fore-edge, folding map and plate are torn at folds with no loss of image, but both are offset, one on title, the other on the adjoining leaf, text block is very good, with occasional toning, scattered ink stain on verso of Z2. First edition of the author's famous account of his exploration. Coxe visited St. Petersburg and spent time researching Russian activities in the North Pacific and Bering Sea, including collecting journals of Russian expeditions and discoveries made in northwestern America. On his journey, Coxe collected, compared and translated Russian maps and journals subsequent to Bering's 1741 expedition, the first ever given to the public and the first appearances in English. This significant source on Russian exploration and expansion into the northern Pacific in order to open trade with Alaska and the Aeutian Islands is fascinating. "Coxe made suggestions which led the Russians to promote expeditions of discovery to the north parts of Siberia. His list of works on the subject, and his observations on the fur trade between the Russians and the Chinese, are very valuable" (Hill). Coxe (1747-1826) was an English historian, who traveled throughout Europe and Russia. A linguist and Senior Fellow at King's College, Cambridge, he visited many parts of Europe as tutor and traveling companion to various noblemen and gentlemen, including Lord Herbert, son of the Earl of Pembroke.
