MURRY, ANN
London: Printed for the Author; Sold by Edward and Charles Dilly, J. Robson, and J. Walter, 1779. 4to, full vellum in the manner of Edwards of Halifax, figural drawings on the upper and lower boards, black leather spine labels, marbled paper endpapers, gilt decorations and lettering. Eight-page list of subscribers. An accomplished and entertaining collection of over 30 poems and four poetical dialogues by educator Ann Murry (1750-1818 or after), whose courtesy book Mentoria: Or, the Young Lady's Instructor (1788), went through many editions. Murry, the daughter of a wine merchant, was a school teacher and private tutor, and the access she had to the upper classes reveals itself in her gently satirical dialogues between Lady Prattle and Lady Trifle during a card game; Mr. and Mrs. Wealthy over what to do with themselves; and a fashionable couple over what to do with their children: "As for the Girls I'll send them all to France / Where they will learn to chatter French and dance . . . / The Boys I mean to thrive by Trade or Law; / And bring them up with due respect and awe. / Charles, who I think is something of an Ass, / May do, perhaps, at Bombay or Madras." Alas, in the 20th century a double fore-edge was applied to the edges of this copy, which is not being figured into the price and should be removed. Binding well rubbed, but text fine, with large margins; very good copy.
"Etching with burnished aquatint and engraving, 1799. From the fourth edition of twelve of the so-called ""Los Caprichos"" series, edited by the Madrid Calcografia [circa 1870]. A very good impression, with good contrast, printed on contemporary paper, customary margins, in very good conditions. The series called Los Caprichos, consists of eighty etchings. This first edition of 1799, the only one not to be published posthumously, is imprinted on soft laid pape. Cured in phase edition by the same artist, the series was marketed and before long withdrawn from the market. In fact, because of the many subjects that mocked the Spanish society of the century, Goya suffered censorship. The interpretation of the subjects represented on these plates, always enigmatic, is often controversial." Harris 89; Delteil 91

1779. One of the Best Shape copies of this I have come across. Priced as such. Ask questions if you got em, book holds together but I don't flip pages really at all since it is fragile. Large investment so please ask questions or if you want more photos let me know. All 40 pages here and corners good. No rips. Condition: Disbound. Light Writing on the top in pencil, i didn't try to remove it--Could be someone from the original Society. parts of the book still attached on the side. A few tiny holes from the misbound. See photos. Some discoloration, although better than usual. Been in tissue paper for 10 plus years when I bought it. Information: Alexander Hamilton requested a visit by the Rev. Dr. Mason after he had been shot by Aaron Burr in their infamous duel. Mason visited Hamilton twice before he died. In this Oration, Mason praises Hamilton, ties him to the memory of George Washington and says that Washington's hesitation to take the office of President was overcome through the persuasion of Hamilton. Mason relates Hamilton's prominent role in the formation of the Federal government, and in particular his influence on New York state to join it. His further services and influence in regard to the Whiskey Rebellion, and his continuous care for the fortunes of the young Republic even while out of the public eye. Mason condemns dueling in his conclusion, and, as an eyewitness to his death, says that his dying words were those of a Christian. This pamphlet includes a printing of Hamilton's will, his Paper giving his reasons for engaging in the duel, and letters to the press … [Click Below for Full Description]

1779. Très bon exemplaire. Rare. Justice. Droit. [Click Below for Full Description]

1779. [Galiani Ferdinando]. Del dialetto napoletano. Deus nobis haec otia fecit. Napoli.

Stanhope, the Rev. Charles, D.D.: Rector of Brinkworth, in Wilts. [**see note concerning the doubtful credentials of this gentleman]. Assisted by a Society of Gentlemen of the University of Oxford.
Printed for the Authors; And sold by J. Harrison, No.18, Paternoster Row; the Booksellers of Oxford and Cambridge; and all other Booksellers in Great Britain and Ireland., London, 1779. *** A conundrum *** (see below). Unpaginated: illustrated. OT & Apocrypha: [iv], [916]; NT: [213], [3]; plus a frontis and 49 other engravings. Some browning and offsetting to title page, there are a few patches of foxing (viz Chronicles 2, and a few of the plates), with occasional minor spotting elsewhere, and there is some offsetting from the illustrations to the New Testament. Three of the final leaves have damaged edges, now repaired, but losing a little text. Pages perhaps slightly toned, but contents otherwise clean and in very good order. Although many of the plates have integral titles in English, the engravers, where given (no artists' names present) all appear to be French, except in the NT. In his one-page Preface, the author writes, after asseverating the importance of the Bible: '.a few Words may also be expected respecting this Edition of the Bible, and the Annotations that we have given: But how judiciously soever this Work may appear to be executed, the Public must not consider it as the sole Fruit of the Author's own Genius and Learning, or that of his learned Associates; but as the Comments and Annotations of the most ingenious Men of every Age and Nation. He has called in the Aid and Assistance of every valuable Writer. He has compiled from the Talmudical and Rabbinical Writers among the Jews, and has carefully consulted the Ancient Fathers, and the best Modern Divines, am … [Click Below for Full Description]
