LUCHET, Jean Pierre Louis de (= Marquis de LA ROCHE DU MAINE).
Essais sur la minéralogie et la métallurgie.Maestricht, J.E. Dufour & P. Roux, 1779. 3 parts in 1 volume. 8vo (22.5 x 13.5 cm). Contemporary decorated paper wrappers. [4], XXVII, [1], 232 pp. Very rare first edition (printed in Maastricht) of a mining manual by a French enlightened marquis who worked as chief librarian at the Hessen-Kassel court of Friedrich II (1720-1785). Although mentioned reference literature, the book is very rare on the market and we found no copy in auction records. Luchet was an acquaintance of Voltaire and in fact had a letter of recommendation from him that helped him obtain his position at the Hessen-Kassel court. Luchet's other writings concerned literature and theatre, which makes this mining manual a curious standout. It is unclear why this work was printed in Maastricht, except that the Maastricht (south Limburg) region does have a long history of mining. In a lengthy discourse on mining in the preliminaries Luchet makes a strong pro-mining statement. This is followed by reflections on several aspects of mining, often in a question and answer form. He goes into the medical consequences of mining and names several minerals and metals such as coal, quartz, lead, tin, gold, silver, copper and more.A second edition appeared in 1797, often bound with H. Struve, Methode analytique des fossils, Lausanne, 1797.Bookplate on front paste-down, owner's name on title-page, small stamp on title-page and pages 9, 99, 199 and 232. MESMER, Franz Anton.
Mémoire sur la découverte du magnétisme animal.Geneva & Paris, Pierre François Didot le jeune, 1779. Small 8vo. Later mottled calf, richly gold-tooled spine with red morocco label, red sprinkled edges. [1], [1 blank], VI, 85, [1 blank] pp. First edition of a famous (or infamous) treatise by Anton Mesmer (1733-1815) on the medical and healing use of magnetism and the healing magnetic power in his own hands, which he called "animal magnetism". His theories gave us the English word "mesmerize". Mesmer was an Austrian physician who believed that a magnetic fluid pervades the universe, is present in every living being and affects the nervous system. A blockage in this system, could prevent the magnetic energy from flowing throughout the body, which would provoke illnesses. Mesmer thought that he could redress the energetic imbalances with the use of magnetism.Mesmer did not produce any proof of his theory or describe his experiments so they could be scientifically replicated by others. Mesmer and his imitators relied on an extensive collection of case studies, which they used as propaganda for their theories. Mesmerism became a controversial issue that attracted a great deal of public attention. In the present pamphlet Memoire sur la découverte du magnétisme animal (1779) and another Précis historique des faits relatifs au magnétisme animal (1781), Mesmer first outlined his ideas on magnetism and especially animal magnetism with only limited polemics. The present book therefore gives Mesmers first account of his theories. The notion that Mesmers techniques did bring benefits due … [Click Below for Full Description]

Charles Quint
1779. Très bon exemplaire. Rare. Justice. Droit. [Click Below for Full Description]

[CATON, James]
Bristol, July 20, 1779. folio, 3 + (1)pp., folded for posting with docket title, the docket a little soiled, a few minor spots, unbound. A good copy. The detailed description of the arrest of James Caton by a press-gang, his imprisonment in disgusting conditions, and eventual release as a result of a writ of Habeas Corpus being obtained by his friends. 'On Monday the 12th of this instant, July, about one o'clock, while transacting my business on the Exchange, I was violently seized by Lieutenant Lane, and a press-gang under his command. Astonished at so unexpected an attack, I demanded the reason for it, and was answered only by oaths and imprecations, and required to go with them. Surrounded by such a band of ruffians, I saw resistance was in vain, and I submitted .....'. It is worth noting that Edmund Burke, then M.P. for Bristol, was also involved in Caton's release: 'It only now remains for me', writes Caton, 'to acknowledge with gratitude my obligations to those numerous citizens who interested themselves in my favor. My particular thanks are due to Messrs. P. Farr and T. Millet, who undertook the fatigue of a rapid journey to London, and with so much expedition obtained the writ of Habeas Corpus: - to Edmund Burke, Esq; for his unremitting attention and successful perseverance in my cause .....'.

WALDORP, Jan Gerard.
[Design for the frontispiece of Betje Wolff's Proeve over de opvoeding].[Amsterdam, 1779]. Drawing in black ink with grey watercolour washes (14 x 9 cm) on laid paper, tipped onto a larger leaf (30 x 21.5 cm). Attractive design in black ink with grey washes by Jan Gerard Waldorp, for the frontispiece of Betje Wolff's pedagogical essay Proeve over de opvoeding (1779). The drawing shows a lady entering a room where a mother is sitting with a baby, a cradle beside her, and several other children in the room reading and playing, with a bookcase in the background, with a globe on top. Noach van der Meer the younger engraved the frontispiece after this drawing, and Allart in Amsterdam published the book jointly with Isaac van Cleef in The Hague in 1779. The essay is the only pedagogical work of the important eighteenth-century Dutch women writers duo Wolff and Deken. Wolff (1738-1804) discusses the importance of the mothers role in raising children: a mother should read a lot to educate her children in a broad range of subjects and she should not tell, or let her children read, foolish folk tales, but instead present them with stories from the Bible, classical antiquity and Dutch history.Waldorp (1740-1806) was a contemporary of Jacobus Buijs and Reinier Vinkeles. He was director of the Drawing Academy in Haarlem, and from 1779 to 1781 director of the Drawing Academy in Amsterdam, and later conservator of the national gallery (predecessor of the Rijksmuseum) in The Hague. He also designed stage sets for the new theatre in Amsterdam. The present drawing is very interesting for its … [Click Below for Full Description]

DUTENS, Michel François 1732-1804
Tours: A. Vauquer, 1779. Contemporary gilt-ruled red morocco, flat spine gilt, dark green endleaves, all edges gilt. First Edition, composed expressly for the leisured class wishing to take up painting on their annual country holiday. An accomplished goldsmith known for his skillful painting restoration, Dutens lays out the basics of drawing adults and children, of human anatomy, of osteology and myology, of clothing, of landscape, of perspective and of light and shadow before moving to color and color harmony, the placement and arrangement of figures and finally a chapter on facial expression. Making no claim to originality, he openly names his sources, which he encourages the reader to consult as opportunity allows, but whose fundamentals are arranged here for their convenience in compact format.  Dutens suggests having to hand an articulated mannequin to aid in figure modeling and a modest portfolio of select prints to train the eye and serve as patterns. The longest section is on color. He treats miniatures on vellum and ivory, pastels on paper and lastly oil on canvas. He describes the preparation and application of ground and the layering of paint. Among the many tricks he shares is that for rendering objects reflected in water. He includes a short passage on intaglio color printing (p. 62) and devotes considerable space to a review of the techniques, styles and hallmarks of various artists.  The year following publication, the author, a native of Tours, inscribed this copy to Étienne-Jacques-Christophe Benoist de La Grandière (1733-1805), the city's mayor, who wa … [Click Below for Full Description]

Katô Bunrei
Edo: Wakabayashi Sei-ei, An-ei 8 [1779]. [EHON] Katô Bunrei (1706-1782). REI GASEN 3 volumes. An-ei 8 [1779]. Edo, Wakabayashi Sei-ei. 26.4 x 18.4 cm. String-bound, Japanese-style, fukuro-toji. In the original covers with printed title labels. This set of selections from the designs of Bunrei was edited by his students, Okada Bunkô and Hirayama Bunkyô. Bunrei was a samurai of great skill and individuality as an artist. He was the mentor of Tani Bunchô in the latter's early years. The work at hand captures the breadth of his skill, in subject and style. Mostly printed in sumi shades with a few images also printed with color. Very good printing, a few stains, but overall, very good condition. A very scarce book in any condition or degree of completeness, as here, remarkable. Perhaps a bit later printing after the Nakamura Shôsuke and Yamazaki Kimbei Edo printing of the same year found at Mitchell p.448 under the title REI GASEN, but the printing quality is very similar. In a custom clasped chitsu case.
