List of subscribers. list of 318 subscribers. We believe this is a rare first edition, 1773, according to the British Museum which was printed in only 1 volume. The title page does indicate a presumptive printing of the second volume containing the New Testament, but it is not part of this copy, nor are there any indications that this was printed with the New Testament contents. However, all of the charts, indexes, etc are contained. Which allows us to conclude that this was the complete first, with the second printing in 2 volumes, re-issued in 1774. There are several minuscule tears which can be easily repaired with archival tape. There is also, occasional foxing, here and there spotting, and a few creases. Top of age toned. Some of the plates are age spotted. As a bonus, included are several pages of writing. 1. Loosely inserted is a handwritten page of "Family Merchandise" dated 1833, New York, written by William Pittman. 2.         A CHART OF THE BAY AND HARBOUR OF PENSACOLA IN THE PROVINCE OF WEST FLORIDA SURVEYED BY GEORGE GAULD A.M.

London: J.F.W. Des Barres in the ATLANTIC NEPTUNE, August 1st, . 1780 - Copper-engraved sea chart with aquatint, and details heightened in original color. Sheet size: 21 3/16 x 31 5/16 inches. Very good. A very rare and highly important sea chart of Pensacola Harbor and northwestern Florida from THE ATLANTIC NEPTUNE, the finest marine atlas of North America's east coast, produced during the Revolutionary War. This superbly drafted map features the magnificent natural harbor of Pensacola on the Florida panhandle. Des Barres based this rendering on manuscript survey maps by the British military engineer George Gauld. The town, with its fort and carefully laid out streets is featured in the left-centre of the map. Another settlement "Campbell Town" is located further up the harbor toward the entrance of the "Scambia" (Escambia) River. The borders of various land grants are demarcated, and the countryside is elegantly detailed with aquatint features, and colored in a light brown-green wash. The chart precisely captures the features of the coast, showing how the harbor is protected by two sandy bars of land, the outer being Santa Rosa Island. The chart features a great deal of quantitative hydrographic information, and instructions to mariners are written in the lower right of the map, ensuring that it was by far the most accurate and comprehensive pilot for the harbor produced in the 18th century. The present example is the second of two variants of this chart distinguished by the heightening of the townscapes in a brilliant red hue of original color. It is important to note that the very year that this map was printed the region was caught up in the dramatic action of the Revolutionary War. The Spaniards, who had just joined the war on the American side, seized the British garrison at Fort Barrancas, and West Florida remained in their possession for the duration of the war. Joseph Frederick Wallet Des Barres was born in Switzerland, where his Huguenot ancestors had fled following the repeal of the Edict of Nantes. He studied under the great mathematician, Daniel Bernoulli, at the University of Basel, before immigrating to Britain where he trained at the Royal Military College, Woolwich. Upon the outbreak of hostilities with France in 1756, he joined the British Royal American Regiment as a military engineer. He came to the attention of General James Wolfe, who appointed him to join his personal detail. During this period he also worked with the legendary future explorer James Cook on a monumental chart of the St. Lawrence River. Upon the conclusion of the Seven Years War, Britain's empire in North America was greatly expanded, and this required the creation of a master atlas featuring new and accurate sea charts for use by the Royal Navy. Des Barres was enlisted to survey the coastlines of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. With these extremely accurate surveys in hand, Des Barres returned to London in 1774, where the Royal Navy charged him with the Herculean task of producing the atlas. He was gradually forwarded the manuscripts of numerous advanced surveys conducted by British cartographers in the American Colonies, Jamaica, and Cuba. The result was THE ATLANTIC NEPTUNE, which became the most celebrated sea atlas of its era, containing the first systematic survey of the east coast of North America. Des Barres' synergy of great empirical accuracy with the peerless artistic virtue of his aquatint views, created a work that "has been described as the most splendid collection of charts, plates and views ever published" (NMM). THE ATLANTIC NEPTUNE eventually consisted of four volumes and Des Barres' dedication to the project was so strong that often at his own expense he continually updated and added new charts and views to various editions up until 1784, producing over 250 charts and views, many appearing in several variations. All of these charts were immensely detailed, featuring both hydrographical and topographical information, such that in many cases they remained the most au

        A View at Luchnow

      - A highly detailed hand-colored aquatint engraving by Henry Salt (1780-1827) from his sweeping series “Twenty-four views in St. Helena, the Cape, India, Ceylon, the Red Sea, Abyssinia, and Egypt” These views were published in London by William Miller, 1809 and Robert and Daniel Havell were commissioned to executed the engraving on each plate. The overall dimensions of this print are 22" x 32". Henry Salt was born in Lichfield, England on 1780. He was initially trained as an artist under the direction of John Hoppner, a popular portrait painter of that time, in London. In 1802 he accompanied the Viscount Valentina as secretary and draughtsman on a tour of the east, including India, Abyssinia (modern Ethiopia) and Egypt. At the time it was common for wealthy travelers to be accompanied by an artist. Salt made many paintings on this voyage, some of which served to illustrate Lord Valentia's publication of his travels, published in 1809 as "Twenty-four Views in St. Helena, the Cape, India, Ceylon, the Red Sea, Abyssinia, and Egypt". This set of hand-colored aquatint engravings, executed by Robert and Daniel Havell, is often compared to Thomas and William Daniell's publication "Oriental Scenery" (1795-1808) and David Roberts' "The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia" (1842-1849). Salt was a skilled draughtsman, portraying both the sweeping panoramic landscapes of India, Abysinnia and Egypt, and the costume and lifestyle of the peoples inhabiting those lands. After finishing this publication, Salt was summoned back to Abyssinia in 1809 by the British government to establish diplomatic and trading links. In 1816 Salt was given the post of British Consul-General of Egypt. His position gave him unique opportunities to pursue his growing interest in the monuments and antiquities of Egypt. He employed archeologists such as Giovanni Belzoni to excavate ancient Egyptian sites, such as Thebes, Giza and Abu Simbel, and undertook important archeological research at the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx. Salt also collected a large number of artifacts, such as the head of Ramses II, most of the antiquities Salt collected were purchased by, and can be seen at, The British Museum and the Louvre. In 1825, Salt published an important essay on the deciphering of hieroglyphs, a subject at the forefront of research at the time. Salt passed away in 1827 and was buried in Alexandria. This print is in very good condition overall with some foxing/staining and a few ink stains in margins.

Madan argues that monogamy can be harmful to women and his descriptions of the suffering of women under monogamy provoked charges of blasphemy. The work was in fact an important argument in the evolution of the legal rights of women for which the author had to resign his living and retire into private life. Scarce and rare first edition of a controversial book. 2 volumes.

U. Zelbstein, Mauduyt de la Varenne (1733-1792), un médecin au siècle des lumières, Histoire des Sciences Médicales, 1984, 18, 295-304 ; Rowbottom, Electricity and medicine, p. 25 : "Mauduyt de la Varenne (d. 1792) reported on an extensive series of trials at the early meetings of the Société Royale de Médecine and he also read a long paper on the methods that should be employed. This account appeaed in the Mémoires of the Society and as a separate publication (1784)." The West India Atlas or, A Compendious Description of the West-Indies; Illustrated with Forty Correct Charts and Maps, Taken from Actual Surveys. Together with An Account of the Several Countries and Islands which compose that part of the World: Their discovery, situation, extent, boundaries, product, trade, inhabitants, strength, government, religion &c. By the Late Thomas Jefferys, Geographer to the King.

Printed for Robert Sayer and John Bennett, Fleet Street, 1780 [1782]., London, - A fine example of Jefferys' 'West India Atlas' Folio atlas (550 by 400mm), engraved frontispiece, title page and dedication, 27pp. introduction, index of charts, 40 charts (37 of them double-page) slight offsetting to a few charts, ownership inscription of 'Friderich Christian' in manuscript to title page, original half-calf over blue marbled paper boards, rubbed, spine in seven compartments separated by raised bands, label lettered in gilt. The atlas, first published in 1778, was designed to aid the highly lucrative sugar trade, which by this point accounted for around one-fifth of all imports to Europe, eighty percent of which was supplied by French and British colonies in the West Indies. Unfortunately, Europe's insatiable desire for sugar drove a viler although no less lucrative trade: that of the trafficking of slaves from the west coast of Africa to the Caribbean plantations. It is estimated that by the time the atlas was published, some 400,000 enslaved people were at work in the British Caribbean colonies. The introduction to the atlas gives details of its genesis (This work unites the Atlas and pilot for the West-Indies, shewing both the Geographic and Hydrographic parts), as well as notes on the sources of the individual maps. This is then followed by 23 pages of text on the West Indies, the Islands, and the industries that they support, including an early polemic against the slave trade. The charts themselves are divided into three parts. The first part, which contains six charts, is designed to give information to a navigator wishing to sail from England to the West Indies, starting with a map of the English Channel, then a general Atlantic chart, followed by more detailed charts of the Azores, the Canaries, the Cape Verde Islands, and Bermuda. The second section is made up of an index map of the West Indies, followed by 16 detailed charts that could be joined to form a single large chart detailing the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. The third section contains 17 maps of individual islands or island groups. Unfortunately, Thomas Jefferys would not live to see the publication of his 'West Indian Atlas', and it was left to Robert Sayer who, in partnership with John Bennett, acquired his materials and published the atlas posthumously under Jefferys' name. The work was evidently a commercial success as there were five subsequent editions under the Sayer and Bennett imprint. In 1794 an expanded and modified version with 61 plates was published under Sayer's sole imprint. In the same year Laurie & Whittle acquired Sayer's plates, and they published a further version with the same title page, but with their imprint. Gestetner, David, 'Thomas Jefferys: The West India Atlas, 1775', Map Forum, Issue 8, 2005, pp. 3035. State 3. The ownership inscription of Friderich Christian, is possibly that of Frederik Christian Moth who was Governor of the Royal Dutch Colonies from 17701772.

Friedrich Nicolai, Berlin 1780 - [i-viii]+430 pages small octavo (7" x 4 1/2") bound in contemporary three quarter leather with marbled boards. Foreword by Friedrich Nicolai, Translated by K F Trost. First published in French (Paris) in 1775 as Traite Theorique et Pratique du Jeu des Eches. From the library of Börje Börjesson. 1st German edition. The leading players in Paris befor the revolution were Philidor, Verdoni, Leger, Carlier and Bernaard. In 1775 the last four, Verdoni, Leger, Carlier and Bernaard published Traite Theorique et Pratique du Jeu des Eches, par una societe d'amateurs, (Commonly know as the Traite des amateurs), in which they challenged comparison with Analyze (Philidor). This first issue is not listed in Innocêncio (cf. I, 95), but @NUC cites one of 1780 at MH-L, with the same number of pages in the text but only 2 preliminary leaves. This first issue was almost certainly issued thus; the half-title appears not to be called for, and as there is no mention of a dedicatee on the title-page, it is logical that the two leaves of dedication encountered in the later issue are not required either.---- This first issue not in Innocêncio (cf. The splendid plates show 319 different shells and most of the plates are by Jakob Adam, an Austrian artist (1748-1811).

A STATE OF THE EXPEDITION FROM CANADA, AS LAID BEFORE THE HOUSE OF COMMONS, BY LIEUTENANT-GENERAL BURGOYNE, AND VERIFIED BY EVIDENCE; WITH A COLLECTION OF AUTHENTIC DOCUMENTS.

London. . 1780 - viii,140,lxii pp. plus [1]p. entitled "Advertisement," five partially colored folding plans (two with overlays), and folding map. Large quarto. Mid-19th-century three-quarter morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt. Old repaired tear in first map. Scattered foxing, light tanning. Light dampstain affecting upper and lower margins of four leaves toward rear of text. Some off-setting on the maps. Overall just about very good. The first edition, in large quarto format, of Burgoyne's defense of his conduct as commander of the British expedition down the Hudson Valley from Canada in 1777. Intended to cut the New England colonies off from the rest of rebellious America, the expedition ended in disaster at Saratoga, where American forces soundly defeated Burgoyne and forced his capitulation. Herein Burgoyne answers the inquiry of the House of Commons, demonstrating that the forces he was given were not sufficient to accomplish the task. This is the most important source for information about the campaign, illustrated with excellent maps and plans. The "Plan of the Encampment and Position of the Army under His Excelly. Lt. General Burgoyne at Swords House on Hudson's River near Stillwater." depicts, among other particulars, the "First and Second Positions of that part of the Army engaged on the 19th of September." Tipped to the margin of that plan, as an overlay, is a section of a similar map depicting the "Third and Fourth Positions." of the Army on that same date. The "Plan of the Encampment and Position of the Army under his Excelly. Lt. General Burgoyne at Braemus Heights." also has an overlay tipped to the margin of the plan indicating the position of Burgoyne's Army on Oct. 8. On the printed plan beneath the overly is indicated the General's camp from Sept. 20 to Oct. 7. STREETER SALE 794. LANDE 69. TPL 503. SABIN 9255. HOWES B968, "aa.".
