Japanese Whale Watercolor (C-1) Pygmy Killer Whale

Japan 1780 - Japanese Whale Watercolors Watercolors on rice paper, framed to museum specifications Japanese, c. 1780 14” x 17 1/2” framed Left corner of paper has been trimmed, as seen in photograph. The Japanese whaling trade is a long and prosperous one and has only been curtailed in recent years by the imposition of quotas and bans on fishing to protect this majestic beast of the sea. However, the industry is Norwegian in origin and early rock carvings indicate that the trade began in about 2000 B.C. It was not until the tenth century that an organized commercial whaling industry was formed and this was located in the Bay of Biscay and established by the Basques. Scholars consider that Japanese active whaling started in the sixteenth century but it was not until towards the end of that century that it developed into a large-scale endeavor. The Japanese traditionally utilized whales that were found dead or dying on the beach or in near shore water but in 1675, Wada Kakuemon developed the use of nets to capture whales in the open sea. For three hundred years the whaling stock remained constant until the invasion of foreign whalers along Japan's coast disrupted the natural balance, resulting in the depletion of the mammal. The whale provided a wide variety of products for many different crafts, thus leaving very little of the animal to waste. Indeed, the Japanese consider the whale to be a symbol of good fortune and prosperity as illustrated by the Japanese proverb which states, “A whale on the beach is wealth for seven villages.” Thus, these exquisite Japanese watercolors provide depictions of one of Japan’s most revered animals. Their graphic quality and simplicity of execution make them particularly desirable images which date to approximately 1780.

AN ADDRESS OF THE CONVENTION, FOR FRAMING A NEW CONSTITUTION OF GOVERNMENT, FOR THE STATE OF MASSACHUSETTS-BAY, TO THEIR CONSTITUENTS

Boston: White and Adams, 1780.. 18pp. 20th-century three-quarter red morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt. Extremities rubbed. Institutional bookplate on front pastedown. Contemporary ownership inscription on titlepage, a few contemporary notations. Second "S" in "Address" on half title lacking, some paper damage to the "E" as well. Light soiling, foxing, and wear. About very good. Although primarily written by Adams, this explanation of the new constitution was issued by James Bowdoin, convention president. After the rejection of the 1778 Massachusetts constitution, the document was entirely revised, largely by John Adams, and offered to the public in 1780. Adams and others then lobbied hard for its acceptance, and this is the opening gun. EVANS 16843.

AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED "D. CLAUS," TO CAPT. MATHEWS, REPORTING ON INDIAN CAPTIVES DURING THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION].

Montreal. March 23, . 1780 - [2]pp. written on folio sheet. Old folds. Four small pin holes. Very good. Accompanied by a typed transcription. Daniel Claus (1727-87) came to North America from Germany in 1749 and settled for a time in Philadelphia. Almost immediately upon his arrival he became interested in the various languages of the tribes of the Six Nations. He worked under William Johnson, and in 1760 was based in Montreal, becoming deputy agent to the Canadian Indians and reporting to both Johnson and the local military government. By the mid-1760s he had married and had acquired considerable land in the vicinity of Albany, New York. His life changed, both administratively and personally, when in 1774, Sir William Johnson died suddenly, and Sir Guy Carleton replaced Claus with John Campbell. Shortly thereafter, with the outbreak of the American Revolution and the subsequent defeat of Burgoyne at Saratoga, the Loyalist cause in the upper Hudson valley was lost, and Claus and his family fled to Canada, leaving behind their lands and their possessions. In 1778, Frederick Haldimand, Carleton's successor, appointed Claus deputy agent of the Six Nations in Canada, with special emphasis on the Mohawks. In this hurriedly written letter (probably the original draft of the letter, containing many manuscript corrections), which pertains to one Peter Hansen, "active in ye Rebellion," whom the Indians had taken for the British "for intelligence," Claus also mentions in an afterthought: "The Mohawk Village here is somewhat sickly within this short time.".

        Le Triomphe de la Mort

Basle 1780 - Oeuvre de Jean Holbein ou Recueil de Gravures d'Après ses Plus Beaux Ouvrages, accompagnés d'Explications Historiques et Critiques et de la Vie de ce Fameux Peintre par Chrétien de Mechel, Graveur de S. A. S. Monseigneur l'Electeur Palatin, et Membres de Diverses Académies. Première Partie, Le Triomphe de la Mort. A Basle chez l'Auteur, 1780. Dedication to George III. This work contains Mechel's interpretation of the 'Dance of Death', and is the first part of a four part work of Holbein's designs. Folio (364 x 286 mm.), pp. 12, [2], plus 14 plates. The first 12 plates contain 46 copper engravings or etchings of the familiar scenes together with two others engraved after Holbein's drawing of a decorated dagger sheath. The last two plates are unconnected with the Dance of Death, and show Federico Zucchero's copies of Holbein's originals entitled The Triumph of Riches and The Triumph of Poverty. Bound in early 19C. half roan (?) over marbled boards, marbled endpapers, the original wrappers bound in. Bookplates of John Proctor Anderdon of Farley Hall, Berks. The binding is worn but still quite solid. Internally the text is uniformly lightly browned, the plates white but with occasional light foxing, mostly marginal. The tissue-guards have been removed. There is a short closed tear (no loss) in the edge of the title-page, which also lacks its top right-hand corner. There is a small library stamp on the verso of the title-page. There are barely visible library blind-stamps on the bottom right-hand corners of four of the plates, well away from the engraved area. Chrétien de Mechel (1737-1817) was an engraver, art connoisseur, and printseller in Basle, Holbein's home town. He was offered drawings purporting to be Holbein's originals of the series which he refused, but later borrowed them to engrave these plates. However, it is now established that these drawings were not by Holbein, but Peter Rubens. The engravings of the dagger sheath, on the other hand, were taken from original drawings by Holbein in Mechel's possession.

Maritime School on the Banks of the Thames, for the Education of the Sons of such Sea Officers, and others, as may be intended for the King's, the East India Company's, or the Merchants Service [caption title]

no publisher, [Chelsea, England? 1780 - Small quarto pamphlet, approximately 6.75" x 3.5". 19, [1, blank] pp., A--B[4], C1--C[ 2]. Stitched, without wrappers, later (?) paper reinforcement strip to spine. First leaf slightly dust-soiled, very good. This pamphlet serves as a continuation of a proposal first made in1777 to establish at Chelsea a naval training school for young English boys. The school was the brainchild of English philanthropist andmerchant Jonas Hanway. The objectives of the school were to train young boys for the Royal Navy, and to ensure the children of fallenofficers who had died in serving their country could receive a naval education. The details of the institution and its benefits for King, country, and character are herein outlined. Pages 13--19 record a lengthy list of subscribers; many, quite obviously, with title, status, and notable standing. Not on *ESTC*, *COPAC*, or *OCLC*. A variant example, in seventeen pages, held by the National Maritime Museum in England, has a similar, but variant title, and suggests a date of 1781. We suspect NMM's example chronologically preceded this present example. Other Maritime School on the Banks of the Thames pamphlets are recorded, but not with this title's wording. Additionally, they often appear to post-date this present example which is apparently unrecorded. Of the other editions, not one mentions in the caption title that the school was intended for training individuals who would then serve with the East India Company. A curious anomaly? HET TEGENWOORDIG VERWARD EUROPA (EUROPE IN HER PRESENT DISORDERED STATE)].

[Holland. ca. ]. 1780 - Broadside, 12 x 13 inches (image size approximately 10 x 11 inches). Early vertical and horizontal folds, else near fine. Matted. Title from George and Stephens, who list a captioned variant; the present engraving is not captioned. A fabulous Dutch satirical cartoon engraving depicting an embattled England during the American Revolution. A table, representing the Bank of England, hangs tipped over a Dutch landscape from a chain attached to the horn of a celestial unicorn. Seated at its edge is a fat Englishman, whom a Frenchman is pulling off the table by his ankle as a kneeling Spaniard looks on. A bemused American Indian baby in feathered headdress is seated at the center of the table, apparently giving England a small shove, and a Dutchman stands opposite the Frenchman, holding one of the table's legs and speaking to an accountant seated among piles of wealth. Below the scene is a tablet engraved in parallel English and Dutch text, a portion of which reads: "Amazing Fool - ! yet tottering on thy bench, Tho' scorn'd by Spain, and cozen'd by the French -- . Only the Dutch, not laughing at your nose, Good-natur'd helps, to snatch what-e'er you lose." Very rare, with only one copy located by OCLC, at Yale. M.D. George & F.G. Stephens, CATALOGUE OF POLITICAL AND PERSONAL SATIRES 5721 (variant).

        Blue Whale; Japanese watercolor

      - Japanese Whale Watercolor Watercolor on rice paper, framed to museum specifications Japanese, c. 1780 The Japanese whaling trade is a long and prosperous one and has only been curtailed in recent years by the imposition of quotas and bans on fishing to protect this majestic beast of the sea. Their graphic quality and simplicity of execution make them particularly desirable images which date to approximately 1780. 19” x 26 1/2” framed

Collection of medals and tokens issued by printers, booksellers and others in the book arts

A collection of medals and tokens relating to the book arts with dates ranging from as early as the 17th century to the 21st century and housed in six wodden cabinets. The medals are truly spectacular as examples of engraving with each having a story behind it. Some of the highlights of the collection: 6 Dutch Guild Medals from the 17th Century awarded to printers including one in silver which is very rare. A high relief Liveryman's badge of Stationers' Company ca. 1780 George Mandl's "retired Master" badge from Stationers' Company The collection is from the private library of Henry Morris of the Bird & Bull Press who designed and printed books relating to the book arts. Morris spent many years putting together the collection of medals and tokens together which resulted in a number of books published by him: Henry Morris of the Bird & Bull Press 1988. Morris. First Fine Silver Coinage of the Republic of San Serriffe 1989. Morris. Trade Tokens of British and American Booksellers & Bookmakers 1991. Harris. Art of Medal Engraving 1992. William Blades. Numismata Typographica, The Medallic History of Printing. Morris reproduced the six 17th century Dutch Guild Medals mentioned above for Rarities of Numismatic Typographica. 1996. Rarities of Numismata Typographica, Four Examples of Early Dutch Printer's' Bookbinders' & booksellers' Guild Medals, Cast in Sterling Silver from Original Specimens 1996. Charles Meunier's Plaquette, 1900. La Relieuse 1999. Adams. Indian Peace Medals of George III or His Majesty's Sometime Allies 2001. Weiss. Illustrium Imagines Incorporating an English Translation of Nota by Roberto Weiss; Accompanied by a Leaf from the First Illustrated Numismatic Book 2007. Adams. Comitia Americana and Related Medals, Underappreciated Monuments to our Heritage. A Leaf Book 2007. Adams. Magnum Opus of Joseph Florimond Loubat and the special keepsake medal 18th Century Book-related Collectible he issued. In addition: A gold token he created (one of 5 copies) for his book on the coinage of his mythical San Serriffe - 1988 "Gold San Serriffe" 100 Coronas Henry was very methodical about describing the items. He put together a loose leaf binder which included three sections: 1. Medals in Blades(1); 2. Medals in Jehne(2); 3. All others not in these two references. He then photocopied the important pages in Blades and added photographs of most of the medals to the binder. Bob Fleck of Oak Knoll Books purchased this collection in 2002 and added the items he had collected along the same lines. There are now 457 items in the collection after the addition of Bob's collection which are listed in an Excel spread sheet that can be viewed here: http://www.oakknoll.com/resources/resourcefiles/Medals.xlxs Also included is his 1989 production on trade tokens involving the full scale production of medals for a selected group of booksellers and for himself as the private press that printed the book. He saved all the original dies and made a spectacular box to house them and added this to his collection, which is below ORIGINAL DIES FOR BOOKSELLERS TOKENS/ BIRD & BULL PRESS. Newtown, PA: Bird & Bull Press (not published), 1988, box measures 12 x 9 x 6 inches, mahogany box with token inset on top cover, along with metal plate inscribed as "ORIGINAL DIES FOR BOOKSELLER'S TOKENS...BIRD & BULL PRESS". A set of original dies and other items involved in the production of "Trade Tokens of British and American Booksellers & Bookmakers," compiled and edited by Henry Morris at the Bird & Bull Press, 1989, in an edition limited to 300 copies. Morris has also written a 3-page hand-written letter, "Everything one might want to know about the dies for Booksellers' Tokens," with excerpts quoted below. The participants, whose tokens are included here, are: Bird & Bull Press, The Book Press, Dawson's Book Shop, Detering Book Gallery, Enterprise Books, Joseph J. Felcone, Kater-Crafts Bookbinders, George Frederick Kolbe/Fine Numismatic Books, G.T. Mandl (English papermakers), Iris Nevins (marbler), and Oak Knoll Books; the tokens (w/9 duplicates), along with a rough flan, were made under the supervision of Meyer Katz at the Unity Mint in Ambler, PA, from dies engraved by Kenneth Douglas at the Green Duck Co., in Olive Branch, MS. The set of 11tool-steel dies (22 pieces), now coated with a protective lacquer, cost Morris $9800 in 1988, which he considered a bargain: "His work was excellent and his price was much less than I would have had to pay locally." Also enclosed are 4 rubber molds, and a complete set of the original lead proofs, "which the die-makers submitted prior to striking, like a printer's proof, but in metal." The lot is contained in a box of Honduras mahogany made by Morris from boards he purchased in 1956, to make molds, when he started making paper. "This was a great project, and in addition to all the pleasure and challenges I had from producing it, I have these unique artifacts--the dies themselves...I have written this note to be kept in the box so that someone at some future time knows the main details of the contents, also to know that the contents, as described, are complete." Apart from that he was an entomologist, artist and engraver and wrote, with his father, a large work on Dutch insects, illustrated by himself. He also illustrated the above two works. The first work depicts 173 insects on 29 plates and the second volume depicts 298 insects on 41 plates. The text is in Dutch and French.
