Madrid: Juan Antonio Lazano, 1780. Very Good. [36], 443, [1] p.: 57 leaves of paleographic engravings; 36 cm. Half calf with marbled paper over boards (possibly a 20th-century binding). The versos of the title page and added engraved title page contain a handwritten list of contents in ink, with some bleed through onto the title pages. Designed as a guide to the reading of ancient Latin and Spanish manuscripts, this volume is beautifully illustrated with engraved plates showing the development of Latin and Spanish script from that used during the Roman empire up to the 18th century. The sample texts presented on the plates are transcribed in the accompanying pages. Lacking leaves 57 and 58; otherwise in Very Good Condition: edges of covers are rubbed, with slight loss of paper; upper corners bumped; added engraved title page is soiled; old repair between second leaf (title page) and third leaf; front hinge separating; worming throughout, largely confined to top margin, affecting ruled borders and text on a few plates. An attractive copy of this scarce and important work of paleography.

        Blue Whale; Japanese watercolor

      - Japanese Whale Watercolor Watercolor on rice paper, framed to museum specifications Japanese, c. 1780 The Japanese whaling trade is a long and prosperous one and has only been curtailed in recent years by the imposition of quotas and bans on fishing to protect this majestic beast of the sea. However, the industry is Norwegian in origin and early rock carvings indicate that the trade began in about 2000 B.C. It was not until the tenth century that an organized commercial whaling industry was formed and this was located in the Bay of Biscay and established by the Basques. Scholars consider that Japanese active whaling started in the sixteenth century but it was not until towards the end of that century that it developed into a large-scale endeavor. The Japanese traditionally utilized whales that were found dead or dying on the beach or in near shore water but in 1675, Wada Kakuemon developed the use of nets to capture whales in the open sea. For three hundred years the whaling stock remained constant until the invasion of foreign whalers along Japan's coast disrupted the natural balance, resulting in the depletion of the mammal. The whale provided a wide variety of products for many different crafts, thus leaving very little of the animal to waste. Indeed, the Japanese consider the whale to be a symbol of good fortune and prosperity as illustrated by the Japanese proverb which states, “A whale on the beach is wealth for seven villages.” Thus, these exquisite Japanese watercolors provide depictions of one of Japan’s most revered animals. Their graphic quality and simplicity of execution make them particularly desirable images which date to approximately 1780. 19” x 26 1/2” framed

Collection of medals and tokens issued by printers, booksellers and others in the book arts

A collection of medals and tokens relating to the book arts with dates ranging from as early as the 17th century to the 21st century and housed in six wodden cabinets. The medals are truly spectacular as examples of engraving with each having a story behind it. Some of the highlights of the collection: 6 Dutch Guild Medals from the 17th Century awarded to printers including one in silver which is very rare. A high relief Liveryman's badge of Stationers' Company ca. 1780 George Mandl's "retired Master" badge from Stationers' Company The collection is from the private library of Henry Morris of the Bird & Bull Press who designed and printed books relating to the book arts. Morris spent many years putting together the collection of medals and tokens together which resulted in a number of books published by him: Henry Morris of the Bird & Bull Press 1988. Morris. First Fine Silver Coinage of the Republic of San Serriffe 1989. Morris. Trade Tokens of British and American Booksellers & Bookmakers 1991. Harris. Art of Medal Engraving 1992. William Blades. Numismata Typographica, The Medallic History of Printing. Morris reproduced the six 17th century Dutch Guild Medals mentioned above for Rarities of Numismatic Typographica. 1996. Rarities of Numismata Typographica, Four Examples of Early Dutch Printer's' Bookbinders' & booksellers' Guild Medals, Cast in Sterling Silver from Original Specimens 1996. Charles Meunier's Plaquette, 1900. La Relieuse 1999. Adams. Indian Peace Medals of George III or His Majesty's Sometime Allies 2001. Weiss. Illustrium Imagines Incorporating an English Translation of Nota by Roberto Weiss; Accompanied by a Leaf from the First Illustrated Numismatic Book 2007. Adams. Comitia Americana and Related Medals, Underappreciated Monuments to our Heritage. A Leaf Book 2007. Adams. Magnum Opus of Joseph Florimond Loubat and the special keepsake medal 18th Century Book-related Collectible he issued. In addition: A gold token he created (one of 5 copies) for his book on the coinage of his mythical San Serriffe - 1988 "Gold San Serriffe" 100 Coronas Henry was very methodical about describing the items. He put together a loose leaf binder which included three sections: 1. Medals in Blades(1); 2. Medals in Jehne(2); 3. All others not in these two references. He then photocopied the important pages in Blades and added photographs of most of the medals to the binder. Bob Fleck of Oak Knoll Books purchased this collection in 2002 and added the items he had collected along the same lines. There are now 457 items in the collection after the addition of Bob's collection which are listed in an Excel spread sheet that can be viewed here: http://www.oakknoll.com/resources/resourcefiles/Medals.xlxs Also included is his 1989 production on trade tokens involving the full scale production of medals for a selected group of booksellers and for himself as the private press that printed the book. He saved all the original dies and made a spectacular box to house them and added this to his collection, which is below ORIGINAL DIES FOR BOOKSELLERS TOKENS/ BIRD & BULL PRESS. Newtown, PA: Bird & Bull Press (not published), 1988, box measures 12 x 9 x 6 inches, mahogany box with token inset on top cover, along with metal plate inscribed as "ORIGINAL DIES FOR BOOKSELLER'S TOKENS...BIRD & BULL PRESS". A set of original dies and other items involved in the production of "Trade Tokens of British and American Booksellers & Bookmakers," compiled and edited by Henry Morris at the Bird & Bull Press, 1989, in an edition limited to 300 copies. Morris has also written a 3-page hand-written letter, "Everything one might want to know about the dies for Booksellers' Tokens," with excerpts quoted below. The participants, whose tokens are included here, are: Bird & Bull Press, The Book Press, Dawson's Book Shop, Detering Book Gallery, Enterprise Books, Joseph J. Felcone, Kater-Crafts Bookbinders, George Frederick Kolbe/Fine Numismatic Books, G.T. Mandl (English papermakers), Iris Nevins (marbler), and Oak Knoll Books; the tokens (w/9 duplicates), along with a rough flan, were made under the supervision of Meyer Katz at the Unity Mint in Ambler, PA, from dies engraved by Kenneth Douglas at the Green Duck Co., in Olive Branch, MS. The set of 11tool-steel dies (22 pieces), now coated with a protective lacquer, cost Morris $9800 in 1988, which he considered a bargain: "His work was excellent and his price was much less than I would have had to pay locally." Also enclosed are 4 rubber molds, and a complete set of the original lead proofs, "which the die-makers submitted prior to striking, like a printer's proof, but in metal." The lot is contained in a box of Honduras mahogany made by Morris from boards he purchased in 1956, to make molds, when he started making paper. "This was a great project, and in addition to all the pleasure and challenges I had from producing it, I have these unique artifacts--the dies themselves...I have written this note to be kept in the box so that someone at some future time knows the main details of the contents, also to know that the contents, as described, are complete."         Riacotta in the Baramahal

      - A highly detailed hand-colored aquatint engraving by Henry Salt (1780-1827) from his sweeping series “Twenty-four views in St. Helena, the Cape, India, Ceylon, the Red Sea, Abyssinia, and Egypt” These views were published in London by William Miller, 1809 and Robert and Daniel Havell were commissioned to executed the engraving on each plate. The overall dimensions of this print are 22" x 32". Henry Salt was born in Lichfield, England on 1780. He was initially trained as an artist under the direction of John Hoppner, a popular portrait painter of that time, in London. In 1802 he accompanied the Viscount Valentina as secretary and draughtsman on a tour of the east, including India, Abyssinia (modern Ethiopia) and Egypt. At the time it was common for wealthy travelers to be accompanied by an artist. Salt made many paintings on this voyage, some of which served to illustrate Lord Valentia's publication of his travels, published in 1809 as "Twenty-four Views in St. Helena, the Cape, India, Ceylon, the Red Sea, Abyssinia, and Egypt". This set of hand-colored aquatint engravings, executed by Robert and Daniel Havell, is often compared to Thomas and William Daniell's publication "Oriental Scenery" (1795-1808) and David Roberts' "The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia" (1842-1849). Salt was a skilled draughtsman, portraying both the sweeping panoramic landscapes of India, Abysinnia and Egypt, and the costume and lifestyle of the peoples inhabiting those lands. After finishing this publication, Salt was summoned back to Abyssinia in 1809 by the British government to establish diplomatic and trading links. In 1816 Salt was given the post of British Consul-General of Egypt. His position gave him unique opportunities to pursue his growing interest in the monuments and antiquities of Egypt. He employed archeologists such as Giovanni Belzoni to excavate ancient Egyptian sites, such as Thebes, Giza and Abu Simbel, and undertook important archeological research at the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx. Salt also collected a large number of artifacts, such as the head of Ramses II, most of the antiquities Salt collected were purchased by, and can be seen at, The British Museum and the Louvre. In 1825, Salt published an important essay on the deciphering of hieroglyphs, a subject at the forefront of research at the time. Salt passed away in 1827 and was buried in Alexandria. This print is in very good condition overall with some foxing/staining and a few ink stains in margins.

        La Rêveuse. [The Dreamer]

Paris, 1780. A lovely pastoral print after the celebrated French Rococo artist François Boucher. In this handsomely composed image, Boucher depicts a pretty shepherdess who has fallen asleep, attended only by a pet goat. She seems to epitomise "sweet dreams" with her calm face, bare feet, and the flowers in her hair, at her breast and at her feet. She is the ideal that pastoral art aimed at: unsophisticated attunement with nature and we feel in her innocence, beauty and vulnerability a latent fecundity both deeply restful and rich in possibility. François Boucher (1703-1770) was one of the most versatile and influential French artists of the eighteenth century. He not only decorated palaces and private residences, but also painted portraits, landscapes, and mythological scenes; and designed opera sets, porcelains, and tapestries. He was a prolific painter and draftsman and he excelled in cabinet-sized paintings for collectors, many of which were reproduced in print in an effort to satisfy the demands of eager connoisseurs. He began his career producing reproductive engravings of Watteau's paintings, but he quickly became one of the most fashionable artists in Paris. He was favoured by the King's mistress, Madame du Pompadour, and quickly became "premier peintre" to Louis XV. Boucher depicts a pretty shepherdess who has fallen asleep. She seems to epitomise "sweet dreams". Her innocence, beauty and vulnerability seem to symbolize restful sleep and in a larger way peacefulness itself. Engraving. Printed on laid paper with watermark. In good condition with the exception of being trimmed within the platemark. Some overall light foxing and some sunning where a mat was in place. Image size: 15 1/2 x 11 1/4 inches.

Leipzig, bey Weidmanns Erben und Reich, 1780 - Mit gestochenem Frontispiz und gestochener Titelvignette (J.W. Meil del.). XXXII, 436 S., 1 Bl. (Trauzettel Bl. Nr.1141). - Hinterer Deckel leicht berieben, Vorsätze etwas stockfleckig. - Sehr schönes Exemplar. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Reisen durch die innern gegenden von Nord-Amerika.aus dem Englischen.

C.E. Bohn, Hamburg 1780 - First German edition and first edition in a foreign language, 8vo, pp. xxiv, 456; engraved folding map; nice copy of a scarce edition in 20th century 3/4 red morocco gilt by Stikeman. A seminal book in the history of the exploration of the American west, and a cornerstone in Minnesota history. Peace between Great Britain and France at the close of the French and Indian Wars in 1763 brought eastern Minnesota under the British flag for the first time, thus opening the vast territory to British fur traders. "Carver spent the winter of 1766-67 a short distance up the Minnesota River with the Sioux. He was then serving as mapmaker and advance man on an expedition, led by Captain James Tute and inspired by Maj. Robert Rogers, commandant at Fort Mackinac, intended to cross the continent in quest of the Northwest Passage. The plan had to be given up, but Carver later wrote and published an account of his travels which became a "best seller" of its day, and gave to thousands on both sides of the Atlantic their first information about the Minnesota country" (Fridley, A Sketch of Minnesota, p. 3).         Préjugés militaires, par un officier autrichien.

'A Kralovelhota' (author's private press at Beloeil Castle) 1780 - 2 volumes in 8vo. [4] + 224p; [2] + 148p including engraved dedication leaf, and 2 leaves of addititional index at end; with 20 engraved plates (mostly folding) showing arms and military tactics, 2 folding tables; 14 exquisitely engraved vignettes of battles by Choffard in the text. Ornamental vignettes. Half calf, marbled boards. First edition of one of the most charming 18th century illustrated book, a witty discussion of contemporary army tactics by an Austrian field marshal. The Prince de Ligne (1735-1814) first distinguished himself during the Seven-Years' War against Frederick the Great whom he greatly admired and who appears to be the only authority not questioned here. Ligne seems to have been a follower of the French tactician Guibert, who in turn had been influenced by the Prussian method. The first volume comprises general observations on cavalry and infantry, artillery, fortification, discipline etc, as well as chapters on military medicine and hospitals; it is adorned with exquisite miniature textual illustrations (48 x 73mm) of famous battles of the Seven Years' War (1756-63), engraved by Choffard after designs by the author, making it one of the most charming of 18th century books. The second volume, entitled 'Fantaisies Militaires', is devoted to battle orders, composition of army units, and general manoeuvres. This edition is also interesting as a typographical curiosity, having been printed at the author's private press at Beloeil Castle, famous for its gardens, and published with a spurious imprint. It was later reprinted at Dresden and translated into German in 1783. A few occasional insignificant light traces of usage, but a very good copy from the Liechtenstein collection with armorial bookplate on verso of front flyleaf of each volume.         AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, FROM BENEDICT ARNOLD TO THE ADJUTANT QUARTERMASTER GENERAL, REQUESTING FRESH HORSES].

Headquarters, Robinson House [Garrison, N.Y.]. Sept. 1, 1780. - [1]p. Folio. Old fold lines. Minor wear and soiling, some separation starting at folds. About very good. A letter written by General Benedict Arnold the day after receiving word that British General Henry Clinton had agreed to his price for turning his coat. In his letter, Arnold requests fresh horses to run express courier routes - some of which surely carried treasonous information to the British. He writes: "Sir, I have sent the brave Sergeant Pike for six or eight of the best horses you have in pasture for the purpose of relieving the light horse employed here to go express. With hard service and want of forage they are worn down & unfit for use. You will please to deliver him eight of the best horses you have if we can find so many that will answer. Also, a pair of the best waggon horses you have in lieu of two which were sent to me by Col. Hay who will not draw." The letter was clearly drawn up in some haste, as there are several words stricken through where Arnold has changed his mind about phrasing or information. In June 1778, Washington placed Arnold in command of Philadelphia, where he lived and entertained extravagantly, and his private business dealings, haughty and dismissive behavior, and close association with the Shippens and other quasi-Loyalists excited the enmity and wrath of the Executive Council of Pennsylvania. On Feb. 3, 1779, a courier served him with a copy of eight formal charges filed against him by the Pennsylvania Council. Outraged, Arnold demanded a court martial to clear the allegations against him. "From this period began the plot that would end, eighteen months later, with Arnold's defection to the British side. . He used those channels to inform General Henry Clinton, commanding the British army, that he was ready to serve the Crown. He explained to Clinton that he had lost faith in the revolutionary cause when the United States allied itself with France. No evidence before May 1779 supports this claim. Clinton was cautious but interested in the chance that Arnold might betray a key point in American defenses. He left the matter in the hands of young staff officer, John André." - ANB. By July Arnold had named his minimum price - £10,000 - and on August 1 became commander of the critical American fortress at West Point. By the time this letter was written, important information was passing from Arnold to Clinton, and the plot to betray West Point was well advanced. A wonderful letter, hastily written and clearly showing Arnold's agitation as he slid deeper into infamy.
