        Dolphin; Japanese watercolor

      - Japanese Whale Watercolor Watercolor on rice paper, framed to museum specifications Japanese, c. 1780 The Japanese whaling trade is a long and prosperous one and has only been curtailed in recent years by the imposition of quotas and bans on fishing to protect this majestic beast of the sea. However, the industry is Norwegian in origin and early rock carvings indicate that the trade began in about 2000 B.C. It was not until the tenth century that an organized commercial whaling industry was formed and this was located in the Bay of Biscay and established by the Basques. Scholars consider that Japanese active whaling started in the sixteenth century but it was not until towards the end of that century that it developed into a large-scale endeavor. The Japanese traditionally utilized whales that were found dead or dying on the beach or in near shore water but in 1675, Wada Kakuemon developed the use of nets to capture whales in the open sea. For three hundred years the whaling stock remained constant until the invasion of foreign whalers along Japan's coast disrupted the natural balance, resulting in the depletion of the mammal. The whale provided a wide variety of products for many different crafts, thus leaving very little of the animal to waste. Indeed, the Japanese consider the whale to be a symbol of good fortune and prosperity as illustrated by the Japanese proverb which states, “A whale on the beach is wealth for seven villages.” Thus, these exquisite Japanese watercolors provide depictions of one of Japan’s most revered animals. Their graphic quality and simplicity of execution make them particularly desirable images which date to approximately 1780. 19” x 18 1/2” framed

A State Of The Expedition from Canada, as Laid Before the House of Commons

London: J. Almon, 1780. First edition. full polished calf, ruled in gilt, lettered in gilt on spine with raised bands, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Edges a little rubbed and two very small ?gouges? on front cover, a few preliminary and terminal leaves with a little foxing, old name in brown ink on recto of first fly leaf, else fine. Large quarto (10.5 x 8.25 inches) . Illustrated with folding map and 5 folding plans, drawn by Medcalfe and engraved by William Faden This is Burgoyne?s defense of his conduct as the commander of the British expedition down the Hudson Valley from Canada in 1777. Intended to cut off the New England colonies from the rest of rebellious America, the expedition ended in disaster in Saratoga, where American forces soundly defeated Burgoyne and forced his capitulation. Herein Burgoyne answers the inquiry of the House of Commons, demonstrating that the forces he was given were not sufficient to accomplish the task. This is the most important source for information about the campaign, illustrated with excellent maps and plans. This is also Burgoyne?s well-illustrated account of his famous Hudson Valley campaign, which ended in his surrender at Schuylerville and turned the tide by precipitating French entry into the Revolution on the American side. Burgoyne?s writing is interesting and historically of inestimable signifucance, by documenting one of the crucial moments of the American Revolution. The plans are beautifully drawn by Mr. Medcalfe and engraved by William Faden. They depict the troop positions at Bennington, Huberton, and the several battles near Saratoga. All with key positions and routes coloured by hand. The maps are: Map of the Countyy in Which the Army of Burgoyne Acted in the Campaign of 1777. Plan of the Action at Huberton. Postiion of the Detachment uner Leity. Col. Baum at Walmscock near Bennington. Plan of th Encampment at Swords House. Plan of the Encampment at Braemus Heights. Postiion which the Army took at Saratoga [Gephart 6179 / Howes B968. Streeter II, 794. Sabin 9255. Lande 69. Gagnon I, 613. DNB III pp.340-342. John Carter Brown II, 2620. Dionne II, 841].

Prinz - - John Hunter's (1728-1793) "Natural history of the human teeth" "is a detailed study of the mouth, jaws and teeth with exceptionally accurate plates. Hunter correctly understood the growth and development of the jaws and their relation to the muscles of mastication. He coined the terms cuspids, bicuspids, molars and incisors. " - - His "practical treatise on the diseases of the teeth" and " The natural history" revolutionized the practice of dentistry and provided the basis for later dental research. Hunter devised appliances for the correction of malocclusion. He described the various stages of the inflammation of affected teeth, and gave an accurate description of periodontal disease. He included instruction with regard to the operation of tooth transplantation from one living person directly to the jaw of another", he was the first to study the teeth in a scientific manner, and the first to recommend complete removal of the pulp in filling them, and he also devised appliances for the correction of malocclusion; Hunter, devoted three chapters of the regulation of teeth, he was the first to dwell at length on the ideal occlusion. - - Hermann Prinz, Dental Chronology, pp.72-73; Hoffmann-Axthelm, Hist.       Paris, Daumont, ( ca. 1780).Contemporary handcoloured perspective view (vue d'optique or Guckkastenbild) depicting the Cape of Good Hope by Jan van Ryne. Ca. 25,5 x 41 cm.* Fine view by 'the Dutch artist Jan van Ryne (ca. 1712-1760), he was believed to have worked in London about 1752-54, when he made an interesting engraving of Table Mountain and Bay, first published by Robert Sayer of Fleet St., London, in 1754, and provided the basis from which other prints were made, one being engraved in reverse in Paris (Gordon-Brown, Pictorial Africana, p.234). We offer the French version of this very attractive view of the Cape of Good Hope from the sea showing the Table Mountain and the company's buildings and many ships in Table Bay. It was an obligatory stop for all European ships going to the Indian Ocean or returning from there to Europe. They stayed a long time to reprovision and to let their crews rest. - A fine copy.Scheen II, p.277.

DOCUMENT, SIGNED BY CHARLES THOMSON, REQUISITIONING SUPPLIES FOR THE CONTINENTAL ARMY].

[Philadelphia. Nov. 4, 1780]. - 3pp., docketed on verso. Folio. Repaired at central horizontal and vertical folds with tissue, some small tissue repairs at edges. Silked. Good. List of requisitions for specific supplies, as issued by the Continental Congress on Nov. 4, 1780, extracted and signed by Charles Thomson as the Secretary of that body. This copy has been docketed on the fourth page, "Delaware," indicating its intended destination. At this time, General Nathanael Greene was about to be appointed to relieve Horatio Gates. After departing from West Point, Greene made numerous stops on his way to Hillsboro, N.C., requesting men, uniforms, weapons, and food. Congress, under the Articles of Confederation, could likewise only request, not order, such provender. This portion of the minutes begins with supplies of beef, pork, flour, run, and salt, due from Pennsylvania, likewise listing supplies needed from Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina. It closes with the detailed resolutions concerning substitutions of pork for beef, of continental rum for the West Indian variety, of Indian meal for flour, and concerning methods of adjustment for any state that supplies more than its due proportion.
