[Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

A South-East View of the City of Boston in North America

London: Printed for Carington Bowles, 1780. Engraving, on laid paper, full period hand colouring. Linen backed at a very early date. The third state of this important early view of Boston, based on an original drawing by William Burgis. "This interesting view of Boston from the bay, showing the waterfront with the Long Wharf in the foreground, was apparently based on the first state of the 1723 Burgis prospect of the New England city. When John Carwitham prepared the engraving, he added the Old South Meeting House and Hollis Street Meeting house, both built in 1731. The spire of Christ Church seen in the Burgis view -- then an architectural projection rather than a reality -- was retained by Carwitham even though the spire would not be built until about 1740" (Deák p.53). Brightly hand-colored in a thick gouache, the engraving was intended by Bowles as part of a series of prints to be used in a peep show or optical viewer. Operating one of the largest print "warehouses" in London, Bowles capitalized on the interest in the American colonies brought about by the Revolution and issued several such views of American cities. This is the third state of the Boston view, with the number 34 added to the plate just to the left of the title. Deák Picturing America I,86; cf. J. Winsor Memorial History of Boston II,pp.531-2; Stokes and Haskall American Historical Prints p. 14; Cresswell 496.

        Grotta di Pozzuoli

1780. Gouache painted on board. Very good condition apart from a few barely visible water stains in the bottom margin. A charming view of the famous Crypta Neapolitana, an ancient architectural marvel in the Italian town of Pozzuoli, near Naples. Designed by the architect Cocceio during the reign of Augustus, the grotto was a heavily trafficked tunnel used to facilitate trade and transportation between Naples, Pozzuoli and Baiae. Legend has it that the ancient poet Virgil, author of The Aeneid , The Bucolics , and The Georgics and a resident of the environs of Naples, magically created the grotto in the Hill of Posillipo for the benefit of the town's citizens. Situated directly above it is the Tomb of Virgil, the fabled columbarium where the poet was allegedly buried, which is commemorated by an imposing funerary monument located to the left of the cove's mouth. The façade of this monument, which is visible on the left side of this beautiful work, also served as an epitaph on which Sebastiano Bartolo recorded information discovered in his analysis of the water of the two thermal springs (Astroni's Bath) he found in the area in 1668. An impressive feat of Roman engineering, the Crypta Neapolitana has been depicted by many artists through the centuries, among them Seneca and Alexandre Dumas.

        Contes.

Paris: Daniel Jacomet,, [c.1940s]. Two volumes, folio. Finely bound in contemporary full olive morocco, spines gilt-ruled in compartments with raised bands and titles direct, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. 64 sepia drawings facsimile plates, and 57 floral designs in the text, as well as coloured borders throughout and the manuscript reproduced in facsimile. Spines sunned, excellent condition. First edition thus, one of 190 privately produced and distributed facsimile copies by Daniel Jacomet of a unique manuscript copy of the Contes de La Fontaine illustrated by Fragonard. The illustrations were done by Fragonard in about 1780 during the artist's journey to Italy with M. Bergeret, a "Fermier General". The first draft was a series of 44 pencil drawings, now in the Morgan Library. The final illustrations, consisting of a series of 64 magnificent sepia drawings and 57 floral designs, were given to Bergeret and inserted by him into a beautiful manuscript of the Contes de La Fontaine. This unique copy, after passing through many hands (the second blank of the first volume bears, in facsimile, manuscript evidence of this provenance history), finally came into the possession of M. Henry Beraldi (1849-1931) the French bibliophile and publisher. This copy, in volume one, bears an example of Beraldi's ex-libris, which we suspect was present in all copies. On his death the manuscript was purchased by the Ville de Paris. In order to defray the cost of this purchase, the Ville de Paris commissioned Daniel Jacomet, the finest producer of art facsimiles then working, to reproduce the 190 copies in facsimile. The entire edition was sold to individual subscribers and museums, and never offered for public sale. Each volume bears a typewritten leaf attesting to the background history of this book's production. This copy comes from the library, though unmarked as such, of Patrick Macleod, who was the director of the Trianon Press (for whom Jacomet also worked), which operated from France and is most famous for its fine colour facsimiles of the original books produced by William Blake.

A chart of the bay and harbour of Pensacola in the province of West Florida surveyed by George Gauld A.M.

London: J.F.W. Des Barres in the 'Atlantic Neptune', 1780. Copper-engraved sea chart with aquatint, and details heightened in original colour. A very rare and highly important sea chart of Pensacola Harbor from 'The Atlantic Neptune,' the finest marine atlas of North America's east coast, produced during the Revolutionary War. This superbly drafted map features the magnificent natural harbor of Pensacola on the Florida panhandle. Des Barres based this rendering on manuscript survey maps by the British military engineer George Gauld. The town, with its fort and carefully laid out streets is featured in the left-centre of the map. Another settlement "Campbell Town" is located further up the harbour toward the entrance of the "Scambia" (Escambia) River. The borders of various land grants are demarcated, and the countryside is elegantly detailed with aquatint features, and coloured in a light brown-green wash. The chart precisely captures the features of the coast, showing how the harbor is protected by two sandy bars of land, the outer being Santa Rosa Island. The chart features a great deal of quantitative hydrographic information, and instructions to mariners are written in the lower right of the map, ensuring that it was by far the most accurate and comprehensive pilot for the harbor produced in the eighteenth-century. The present example is the second of two variants of this chart distinguished by the heightening of the townscapes in a brilliant red hue of original colour. It is important to note that the very year that this map was printed the region was caught up in the dramatic action of the Revolutionary War. The Spaniards, who had just joined the war on the American side, seized the British garrison at Fort Barrancas, and West Florida remained in their possession for the duration of the war. Joseph Frederick Wallet Des Barres was born in Switzerland, where his Huguenot ancestors had fled following the repeal of the Edict of Nantes. He studied under the great mathematician Daniel Bernoulli at the University of Basel, before immigrating to Britain where he trained at the Royal Military College, Woolwich. Upon the outbreak of hostilities with France in 1756, he joined the British Royal American Regiment as a military engineer. He came to the attention of General James Wolfe, who appointed him to join his personal detail. During this period he also worked with the legendary future explorer James Cook on a monumental chart of the St. Lawrence River. Upon the conclusion of the Seven Years War, Britain's empire in North America was greatly expanded, and this required the creation of a master atlas featuring new and accurate sea charts for use by the Royal Navy. Des Barres was enlisted to survey the coastlines of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. With these extremely accurate surveys in hand, Des Barres returned to London in 1774, where the Royal Navy charged him with the Herculean task of producing the atlas. He was gradually forwarded the manuscripts of numerous advanced surveys conducted by British cartographers in the American Colonies, Jamaica and Cuba. The result was The Atlantic Neptune , which became the most celebrated sea atlas of its era, containing the first systematic survey of the east coast of North America. Des Barres's synergy of great empirical accuracy with the peerless artistic virtue of his aquatint views, created a work that "has been described as the most splendid collection of charts, plates and views ever published" ( National Maritime Museum Catalogue ). The Neptune eventually consisted of four volumes and Des Barres's dedication to the project was so strong that often at his own expense he continually updated and added new charts and views to various editions up until 1784, producing over 250 charts and views, many appearing in several variations. All of these charts were immensely detailed, featuring both hydrographical and topographical information, such that in many cases they remained the most authoritative maps of the regions covered for several decades. Following the completion of The Neptune , Des Barres returned to Canada, where he remained for a further forty years, becoming a senior political figure and a wealthy land owner, living to the advanced age of 103.         The New Building on Shrubs Hill

1780. Hand-coloured engraving, printed on wove paper. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling and a few small losses and skillfully repaired tears along the edge of the top margin. A few small surface abrasions along the exterior of the platemark. Trimmed virtually to the platemark on the right side. A beautifully coloured print of the newly constructed Fort Belvedere in Windsor Forest, Berkshire. Erected by the Duke of Cumberland in 1755, Belvedere was expanded into a hunting lodge for King George IV. The triangular turreted structure was set amidst a dense plantation of trees and overlooked Virginia Water, a man-made body of water constructed by Thomas and Paul Sandby at the behest of the Duke. Belvedere was later renovated and inhabited by Edward VIII, Prince of Wales. Brother of the celebrated artist Paul Sandby, the architect and draughtsman Thomas Sandby was an eminent artist in his own right. Essentially self-taught, he moved to London, where he assumed the position of draughtsman and personal secretary of William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, whom he attended on his military campaigns in Scotland and the Netherlands from 1743 to 1748. On these expeditions, he made many detailed sketches of the various battles, encampments, and scenery he observed. Upon being chosen ranger of Windsor Park in 1746, Cumberland appointed Sandby deputy ranger, a position he would hold for the duration of his life. During his tenure as deputy ranger, Sandby inhabited the lower lodge and was responsible for overseeing modifications made to the park's land and any renovations to its buildings including Cumberland Lodge. He illustrated the many projects he undertook, and several of his drawings and designs were engraved and published as folios. In addition to his duties at Windsor, Sandby designed a number of houses in the adjacent neighborhood and was appointed architect and master-carpenter of his majesty's works in 1777 and 1780 respectively. Like his brother, he was an original member of the Royal Academy, where he regularly taught and lectured on architecture. Cf. Dictionary of National Biography.

        Connecticut, and Parts adjacent

Amsterdam: Covens and Mortier and Covens Junior, 1780. Copper-engraved map, engraved by H. Klockhoff, after Bernard Romans, with original outline colour, in very good condition, period-style black and gold frame. A very rare and highly attractive map of Connecticut and Long Island This beautiful and important map was one of four of Bernard Romans' maps of various parts of the American colonies to be re-engraved and published by the renowned Dutch firm of cartographers Covens and Mortier and Covens Junior. The present map is taken from the extremely rare 1777 map currently known in only four examples. No copies of this 1780 version are recorded as having sold at auction in the past thirty years. Connecticut is shown divided into six counties, each of which is outlined in colour, with the main towns coloured in red. The beautiful vignette-cartouche containing the title (in the lower right corner) is of a naturalistically presented Connecticut village scene. Born in Holland, Bernard Romans arrived in America in 1757 and spent a number of years working in the southeast. His two large `whole sheet maps' of Florida were completed in 1774, and at about this time he moved to Hartford, Connecticut. During the Revolutionary War he served in New York on the American side. All of his maps are extremely scarce, in most cases being known by only a few copies, and it is only through re-engraved versions such as the present example that the present generation of map collectors can hope to own examples of this important American cartographer's work.         Document Signed (Br. Hidalgo), on paper, in Spanish. Folio, 1 p. Bound in a dossier of documents relating to the execution of the provisions of the will of Augustina Velázquez. [with] A number of other collateral documents relating to the Condes de Vivanco. On paper, in Spanish. Mexico City, Real de Bolaños, Aguas Clientes, Valladolid (now Morelia), and elsewhere in Mexico. Folio (31 cm, 12.25") and smaller. => Approximately 350 ff.

No place [mining region of Real de Bolaños or Aguas Calientes] no date [1780] In 1780 Augustina Velázquez died and her will provided, among other things, for a huge number of masses to be said for her. Subsidy for the masses was spread among the priests in the mining region where she had lived — Real de Bolaños and Aguas Calientes. Those receiving sums of money signed receipts, and among the dozens was a newly ordained minister who signed his receipt "Br. Hidalgo." The young bachiller became famous in 1810 for initiating the uprising that began the eleven-year struggle for Mexican Independence. => This is a fine, extremely early example of Father Hidalgo's signature. The woman who provided the money for the above mentioned masses was the wife of Antonio de Vivanco (also spelled Bibanco) Gutiérrez and mother of Antonio Guadalupe de Vivanco, the first two Condes de Vivanco. Cambridge scholar David Brading credits Antonio de Vivanco with restoring the mining region of Bolaños to prosperity in the early 1770s, following the region's sharp decline in silver ore production during the first two-thirds of the 18th century — whereby he became very wealthy. In addition to payment for masses for her soul, Doña Augustina's will provides for large sums of money to be spent on construction work on the chapel of Our Lady of Guadalupe in the bishopric of Guadalajara. The paperwork, including receipts, associated with the distribution of her largesse is weighty and detailed. Among the collateral documents in this offering are copies of the last wills and testaments of Antonio de Vivanco Gutiérrez (1796), Augustina Velázquez (1780), and Antonio Guadalupe de Vivanco (1800); the inventory of the younger Vivanco's massive estate (1801); and a marvelous calligraphic manuscript in which the bishop of Guadalajara grants a special privilege to Vivanco the elder. All are notarially certified copies of the originals. All documents in very good condition, sewn, in contemporary vellum bindings.

[drop-title] Extract from an address in the Virginia Gazette, of March 19, 1767

[Philadelphia: Pr. by Joseph Crukshank? Small 12mo. 4 pp.. 1780?] That slavery then is a violation of justice, will plainly appear. . . . Now, as freedom is unquestionably the birth-right of all mankind, Africans as well as Europeans, to keep the former in a state of slavery is a constant violation of that right and therefore of justice." This strong anti-slavery sentiment, addressed to the Virginia Assembly, was first printed outside of the Virginia Gazette in 1767 as an addition to Anthony Benezet's A caution and warning to Great-Britain, and her colonies. Whether it was also issued separately in 1767 is unclear. There were several editions and variants of editions of this work attributed to Arthur Lee on the basis of statements in G.S. Brooke's Friend Anthony Benezet (pp. 301, 332, and 422), and we refer the interested reader to the records of the North American Imprint Project for the decipherment of them. Five-digit number stamped above the title; pp. 1 and 2 separated from 3 and 4, and gutter margin repaired, reattaching the halves. Semicircular tear in lower, inside area of all pages, costing a total of 9 or 10 words now supplied separately.

Satan's Invisible World Discovered; Or a Series of Modern Relations Proving Evidently Against The Atheists of This Present Age That There Are Devils, Spirits, Witches & Apparitions From Authentic Records, Attestations of Witnesses and Undoubted Verity. To Which Is Added that Marvellous History of Major Weir and His Sister, The Witches of Bargarran, Pittenweem and Calder.

8vo. 175 pp. A relatively early edition of this originally very famous but know almost unobtainable volume on the proliferation of witchcraft in 17th Century Scotand and the north country, with a special focus on the notorious and blood curdling Major Thomas Weir who confessed on his sickbed to traffickings with the devil and an incestuous relationship with his sister Jean "Grizel" Weir; the two spun tales of fiery coaches and acts of dark depravity during what became one of the most notable witch trials in Scottish history. Finally Weir and his sister were garrotted and burned in the Gallowlee, Weir's walking stick carved with a human head, reputedly the seat of his power and apparently to be seen on occasion progressing down the street under its own power, was burned with him, making "rare turnings around" in the fire. Altogether a thoroughly sordid affair. #Bound in amodern, orange half morocco over marbled boards with marbled endpapers, strong and durable, if not terribly subtle; a little like its contents. Internally clean, the occasional thumb mark here and there and a small patch of staining to the very bottom of the gutter, not affecting the text, minor wear, several pagination errors point to a volume produced more for popular consumption than as a demonstration of the printer's art. A bright, clean copy of a book, quite besides the additional Weir material contains a plethora of details regarding eyewitness accounts of witches and devils, blow by blow reconstructions of hauntings and curses, and profiles of various perpetrators of supernatural evil. Sinclair was Professor successively of Philosophy and Mathematics at Glasgow University. He was dismissd for nonconformity in 1666, reappointed in 1688, and died in 1696. He is also known for some very decent and academic works on hydrostatics and optics, apparently something of a renaissance man when he wasn't chasing tales of black masses up and down the highlands.#There were at least ten editions of this work published between 1685 and the late nineteenth century. There are perhaps a handful of first edition copies extant, all in institutional libraries and by far the most readily available are nineteenth century reprints, frequently rather edited. Eighteenth century editions in complete form are uncommon. A scarce and important volume in the annals of British witchcraft.

Two months after Gen. Benedict Arnold ordered Ebenezer Foote to "make every possible Exertion to hurry on the Cattle designed for this Post [West Point], as well as those designed for the Main Army," Major Hendrick Wyckoff writes he has sent "19 Beef Cattle ? and also purchased 4 or 5 Cattle?" - Arnold had already arranged the sale of West Point to the British

Fredericksburgh, [New York], November 10, 1780. 6.5" x 8". "Autograph Letter Signed ""Hendk Wyckoff,"" 1 page, 6.5"" x 8"". Fredericksburgh [New York], November 10, 1780. To Mr. [Ebenezer] Foot. On laid paper. Docketed on verso: ""Novbr 10th 1780 / Hendrick Wyckoff State / Agent / To / Ebenezer Foote - Letter."" Fine condition. In part, ""Have sent pr Bearer Capt Calkin 19 Beef Cattle from this place together with the Estimation of the Weight &c. Agreeable to form which Cattle would be pleased to receive and Credit me for the same. I have also purchasd 4 or 5 Cattle between this and Fishkill, which I suppose will be annexed to the drove after they leave this. Capt.Calkins will get them estimated at Fishkill ... I expect to send you another small drove from this Quarter on Thursday next...""It is probable that the recipient of Wyckoff's letter, Ebenezer Foote, inspector of cattle in the Continental Army?s Commissary Department, had notified Wyckoff of an immediate need for cattle after he received an order from General Benedict Arnold dated September 4, 1780. Writing from his headquarters at Robinson's House opposite West Point, Arnold ordered Foote to ""make every possible Exertion to hurry on the Cattle designed for this Post, as well as those designed for the Main Army. I have reason to believe the Garrison here will soon be greatly augmented the Demand for Cattle will of Course be greater, & if we are not better supplied in future than we have been for some Time past, in Case these Posts are invested, they will be lost as well as the Garrison, for Want of Provisions..."" Of course, unbeknownst to Foote, the cattle would be for British soldiers, not the Continental Army. On September 21, 1780, Arnold met with British spy Major John Andre to confirm the sale West Point and to deliver the plans for the fortifications. Earlier in the Revolutionary War, New York Governor Clinton had appointed Major Hendrick Wyckoff as a financial agent for obtaining specie loans from the people for the support of the cause of freedom. He was furnished with notes in blank by the Governor, and he filled them up with the names of the lenders and the sums loaned, as the money was paid into his hands. Towards the end of the war, as Assistant State Agent, Wyckoff was authorized to purchase ""provisions & grain."""

1780 - Unpublished manuscript describing the Middle East and the Holy Land. N.d. [ca. 1780]. N.p. [Middle East]. In 4to (204 mm x 142 mm). 1 [blank] + 2 ff. + 109 pp. + 3 pp. + 1 [blank]. Contemporary sheep, a little rubbed. Faint water stain, mainly to upper margin, overall fresh and clean; fine manuscript on paper, legible hand, title page within decorative frame. Fine manuscript, unpublished and of which no other copies are found, of Vera´s description of the Holy Places. Vera´s work is evidently very learned and profits from a deep first-hand knowledge of the region; it is written to invite pilgrims to visit de Holy Land, and to ease their journey towards it. To achieve his goal, the author provides descriptions of regions and cities such as Damascus, Jordan, Constantinople, Cyprus, and Lebanon. At the same time, Vera aims to collect money for the protection and support of the Holy Places –guarded by Catholic missionaries. It is dedicated to Don Juan Josef Bequer, and Doña Maria Carmen Fernandez, the dedicatory is signed by Vera. The author proves to have a deep knowledge of the religious policy of the region, and of the clash of religious Orders in the Holy Land –each wanting the appointment of guarding some relics or places. Even at that time, collecting money for the Church was not an easy task, Vera complains of the dissuasive attitude of people towards donating, reasoning that the donations were not going to the right places, and claiming that these were attempts of lies of Friars to take money “diciendo ser embustes de frayles, y sacaderos de dinero”. As per the peregrination, there are chapters explaining the visit –even as a guide as one may follow the instructions word by word- to each sighting: for instance “Peregrinacion que se hace al valle Josafat, Huerto de Jetsemani y Monte Olivete”, or “Peregrinacion, que se hace al Sto Monte Sion, por pasqua del Espiritu Santo”. Each important place is described in the work, most with exhaustive detail. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
