An apparent reprint of an edition by Johann Julius Hummel, Berlin and Amsterdam (RISM V371; [1780]), with matching key sequence, opus number, and plate number. The time frame is determined by the date of Hummel's edition and the imprint of the present publisher, which changed to Longman, Clementi & Co. in 1798 (Humphries and Smith p. 218). The RISM database lists various manuscript copies of all six quartets. The quartet WeiV 5a C1 was once misattributed to Joseph Haydn (Hob. III:C13). "... it is clear that Vanhal was one of the best composers of the time – innovative, imaginative and original. He was also influential, but to what extent is difficult to assess... However, he unquestionably contributed significantly to music in Europe, and his published music, issued by many publishers, stimulated the public and the entire industry. His career, which led him from bondage to comfortable independence, reflects the influence of Emperor Joseph II and the democratic principles he espoused in Viennese society. Vanhal’s music, in turn, contributed to the development of Viennese musical style." Paul R. Bryan in Grove Music Online.

With (2): NIEBUHR, Carsten. Beschrying van Arabie, uit eigene waarnemingen en in 't land zelf verzamelde narigten opgesteld. Amsterdam, Steven Jacobus Baalde; Utrecht, Johannes van Schoonhoven & Co. With engraved title-page with an engraved vignette by N. van der Meer (2 female figures with a globe and other instruments) and 25 engraved plates numbered I-XXIV, [XXV], including 7 folding showing 1 view of military exercises, 2 Kufic inscriptions (coloured by hand) and 4 maps. The unnumbered map of Yemen (plate size 58.5 x 39 cm) is coloured by hand in outline. The full-page plates include maps, topographic views, costumes, coins, Arabic inscriptions, etc. All by C.J. de Huyser, N. van der Meer, Th. Koning and C. Philips. 2 works in 3 volumes. 4to. Contemporary half tree calf, sides covered with paste paper; rebacked, with original gold-tooled backstrip laid down. One of the very rare large paper copies of the first and only editions of the Dutch translation by Jacob van Ekers of Niebuhr's famous account of a voyage to Arabia and surrounding countries (ad 1) and his description of Arabia, Egypt and the Middle East (ad 2). Both works were originally written by the Danish traveller and surveyor Carsten Niebuhr (1733-1815) and published in German, in Copenhagen in 1772 under the titles: Beschreibung von Arabien, and Reisenbeschreibung nach Arabien und andern umliegenden Lander. Both works were also translated in French and English. - In 1760 Niebuhr was invited to join a scientific expedition to Egypt. Other members of the expedition were Friedrich Christian von Haven (a Danish linguist and orientalist), Christian Carl Kramer (a Danish physician and zoologist), Georg Baurenfeind (an artist from southern Germany), Berggren (a Swedish ex-soldier) and Pehr Forrskal (a Swedish botanist). In January 1761, the expedition sailed from Copenhagen, Denmark to Alexandria, Egypt. The members of the expedition spent a year in Egypt, visiting Suez and Mount Sinai. They left Suez in October 1762 and sailed to Yemen. In May 1763 they reached Mocha where Von Haven and Forrskal died from malaria. In August 1763 Baurenfeind and Berggren died, followed by Kramer in February 1764. Niebuhr was the only one left to continue the expedition. In 1764, he explored India, sailing from Bombay to Muscat, as well as Shiraz, Babylon, Baghdad, Mosul, and Aleppo. He spent some time in Persepolis in 1765 where he has made very detailed drawings and maps, which were used for more than a hundred years. In 1766, he explored Palestine before finally returning to Copenhagen on 20 November 1767, after a journey of seven years. When he returned to Copenhagen the Swedish government warmly welcomed him and paid the costs of engraving the plates to illustrate his accounts of the voyage. Both works are lavishly illustrated, having together 2 large maps of Yemen and 148 beautifully engraved maps, plans and views of all the regions Niebuhr visited. - The present set has both works printed on the same large paper watermarked: Strasburg bend above VDL and is only slightly trimmed, measuring: 296 x 242 mm. with the tranchefiles still visible.         El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha [.]. Nueva edicion corregida por la Real Academia España.

Madrid, Don Joaquín Ibarra for the Real Academia, 1780. - 4to (295 x 220 mm). 4 vols. including additional engraved title-pages, portrait of the author, 31 engraved plates after various artists, and 1 double-page engraved map. Bound in contemporary mottled sheep, richly gilt with tooled borders and spines and with red morocco title labels. Sympathetically restored with later endpapers. With the bookplate of the executed Emperor of Mexico, Maximilian, on pastedown. Additional bookplate of Laurent Veydt (1800-77, Belgian Minister of Finance), as well as letter recording the presentation of the these volumes to Jules Malou (1810-86, Belgian Prime Minister) in 1876. A large copy of the most famous edition of "Don Quixote" ever produced, with a remarkable provenance. The "Ibarra" edition of 1780 was described by Palau as "magnificent, superior in artistic beauty to all others produced in Spain or abroad"; Richard Ford declares that "no grand library should be without it". Undoubtedly it was on these merits that Ibarra's edition was famously cast in Roman Polanski's 1999 thriller "The Ninth Gate": in the exposition of that film, Johnny Depp's character (an enterprising if vulture-minded rare book dealer) swindles an unwitting couple, heirs to a library to be dispersed, out of what in fact was their pièce de résistance - a set of Ibarra's "Quixote" which he claims is worth "no more than four thousand dollars". - The present copy was purchased (for an unknown sum in pesos) by Emperor Maximilian of Mexico during his brief reign (1864-67) as part of what he hoped would become the nucleus of a National Library; after his execution by firing squad his books were salvaged and sent by mule-back to Vera Cruz, in order to be sold at public auction in Leipzig. - Among the thousands of books amassed by Don Maximiliano, his copy of Don Quixote holds a special place. Younger brother of the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I, Maximilian was sent to Mexico at the tender age of 32 in order to provide a figurehead for the French invasion of that country begun in 1861. Dashing and charismatic, Maximilian would ride into battle in full Mexican regalia, with a large white sombrero, the Order of the Mexican Eagle around his neck, and two revolvers and a sabre. The picture was completed by his frisky horse Orispelo and his very own 'Sancho Panza', his secretary Jose Luis Blasio, who rode a tame mule beside him. It is easy to see why modern historians often call the Viennese-born, self-proclaimed Emperor of Mexico a 'Quixotic' figure; even during Maximillian's lifetime one of his critics in French parliament, Jules Favre, mercilessly derided him as a 'veritable Don Quixote'. Such comparisons were undoubtedly justified; yet the romance of Maximilian's tragic misadventure in Mexico is only heightened by the physical evidence that he once owned a personal copy of Cervantes' great novel - in a spectacular and highly sought-after edition, no less. - The Ibarra edition was prepared at great expense over the course of seven years for the Real Academia, printed on deluxe paper in a specifically-designed typeface and illustrated by the foremost Spanish artists of the time. To this day it remains a monument of Spanish printing, and a fitting tribute to what many regard as the first modern novel in the Hispanic tradition. - The dispersal of Maximilian's library itself forms a fascinating chapter in the present volumes' history. Rebels under the command of Benito Juarez captured and shot the emperor on the 19th June 1867. Likely at the instigation of the Mexican bookseller José Maria Andrade, who had yet to be paid for Maximilian's purchases, the books were packed onto mules and dispatched to Vera Cruz, from whence they sailed for Europe. Their sale in 1869 was one of the greatest of the 19th century - and perhaps the greatest sale of Spanish Americana of all time. Hubert Howe Bancroft was a strong buyer of early Mexican imprints at the sale; and thus many of Maximilian's books are today found in the Bancroft Library at Berkele [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[drop-title] Extract from an address in the Virginia Gazette, of March 19, 1767

[Philadelphia: Pr. by Joseph Crukshank? Small 12mo. 4 pp.. 1780?] That slavery then is a violation of justice, will plainly appear. . . . Now, as freedom is unquestionably the birth-right of all mankind, Africans as well as Europeans, to keep the former in a state of slavery is a constant violation of that right and therefore of justice." This strong anti-slavery sentiment, addressed to the Virginia Assembly, was first printed outside of the Virginia Gazette in 1767 as an addition to Anthony Benezet's A caution and warning to Great-Britain, and her colonies. Whether it was also issued separately in 1767 is unclear. There were several editions and variants of editions of this work attributed to Arthur Lee on the basis of statements in G.S. Brooke's Friend Anthony Benezet (pp. 301, 332, and 422), and we refer the interested reader to the records of the North American Imprint Project for the decipherment of them. Five-digit number stamped above the title; pp. 1 and 2 separated from 3 and 4, and gutter margin repaired, reattaching the halves. Semicircular tear in lower, inside area of all pages, costing a total of 9 or 10 words now supplied separately.

Document Signed (Br. Hidalgo), on paper, in Spanish. Folio, 1 p. Bound in a dossier of documents relating to the execution of the provisions of the will of Augustina Velázquez. [with] A number of other collateral documents relating to the Condes de Vivanco. On paper, in Spanish. Mexico City, Real de Bolaños, Aguas Clientes, Valladolid (now Morelia), and elsewhere in Mexico. Folio (31 cm, 12.25") and smaller. => Approximately 350 ff.

No place [mining region of Real de Bolaños or Aguas Calientes] no date [1780] In 1780 Augustina Velázquez died and her will provided, among other things, for a huge number of masses to be said for her. Subsidy for the masses was spread among the priests in the mining region where she had lived — Real de Bolaños and Aguas Calientes. Those receiving sums of money signed receipts, and among the dozens was a newly ordained minister who signed his receipt "Br. Hidalgo." The young bachiller became famous in 1810 for initiating the uprising that began the eleven-year struggle for Mexican Independence. => This is a fine, extremely early example of Father Hidalgo's signature. The woman who provided the money for the above mentioned masses was the wife of Antonio de Vivanco (also spelled Bibanco) Gutiérrez and mother of Antonio Guadalupe de Vivanco, the first two Condes de Vivanco. Cambridge scholar David Brading credits Antonio de Vivanco with restoring the mining region of Bolaños to prosperity in the early 1770s, following the region's sharp decline in silver ore production during the first two-thirds of the 18th century — whereby he became very wealthy. In addition to payment for masses for her soul, Doña Augustina's will provides for large sums of money to be spent on construction work on the chapel of Our Lady of Guadalupe in the bishopric of Guadalajara. The paperwork, including receipts, associated with the distribution of her largesse is weighty and detailed. Among the collateral documents in this offering are copies of the last wills and testaments of Antonio de Vivanco Gutiérrez (1796), Augustina Velázquez (1780), and Antonio Guadalupe de Vivanco (1800); the inventory of the younger Vivanco's massive estate (1801); and a marvelous calligraphic manuscript in which the bishop of Guadalajara grants a special privilege to Vivanco the elder. All are notarially certified copies of the originals. All documents in very good condition, sewn, in contemporary vellum bindings.

THE COMFORTS OF MATRIMONY; OR, LOVE'S LAST SHIFT: CONSISTING OF MATRIMONIAL DIALOGUES BETWEEN PERSONS OF ALL RANKS AND DEGREES, FROM THE PEER TO THE PEASANT; DESCRIBING THE PAINS AND THE PLEASURES CONSEQUENT ON MATRIMONY, AND INCLUDING A THOUSAND INCIDENTS MOST INTERESTING AND ENTERTAINING TO EVERY MARRIED PERSON: COMPRIZING MANY PIECES WELL WORTHY THE NOTICE OF THE UNMARRIED OF BOTH SEXES

London: Printed for Fielding and Walker, 1780. 12mo. Later cloth, gilt leather spine label. Bookplate on pastedown, residue of another and old inscription on binder's free endsheet, small paper flaw in three leaves affecting a word on each leaf, scattered light foxing and tanning, else a good copy, bound without the plate noted in the ESTC collation. First (and only 18th century) edition of this scarce collection of sixty-eight dialogues in verse on all aspects of interrelations between the sexes, both within and without the confines of matrimony, accompanied by a substantial preface. Many of the dialogues are equally concerned with exposing the foibles of members of various classes, including the clergy. Titles include: "Between a Man of Rank and his Kept Mistress, who he had seduced from the House of her Father in the Country," "Between an Agent for Matrimonial Concerns, commonly called a Marriage Broker, and his Decoy Duck," "Between a Precise Husband and his Sluttish Wife," "Between a Captain in the African Slave-Trade and his Wife," and "Between a very Old Husband, and his very Young Wife." The publication of this collection under the name "Ned Ward, Jr." was no doubt an attempt to capitalize on the reputation of the actual Edward Ward (1667-1731), the extremely prolific author of ribald and satirical verse and tracts, including THE PLEASURES OF MATRIMONY (1689, and reprinted often thereafter). ESTC/Online locates eight copies. ESTC T124875.

DEN ENGELSMAN OP ZYN UITERSTE / L'ANGLOIS A TOUTE EXTREMITEZ

Lyon, 1780. Mounted at corners to modern heavy paper. Lightly soiled. Trimmed a bit close at top edge, but not into image. Very good. Engraving with printed enumerated text beneath in French and Dutch, satirizing England's condition in the face of Dutch, French, and Spanish support for America during the American Revolution. The image features an Englishman, in a bed vomiting into a bowl being held by a Dutch peasant; his backside is exposed to the viewer. Behind him is a chamber pot, and to the right is an apothecary wearing a mask and holding a large syringe. Behind him is an American with feathered headdress. In the doorway to the left are doctors and other apothecaries, being fended off by a Frenchman and a Spaniard. To the far right is an open window with ships at anchor. All the images are accompanied by explanatory text. A fairly scarce print; we locate copies at the Library of Congress, American Antiquarian Society, Library Company of Philadelphia, and the British Museum. BM SATIRES 5731.

STATE OF MASSACHUSETTS-BAY. THE HONORABLE HENRY GARDNER, ESQ....TO THE SELECTMEN OR ASSESSORS OF THE TOWNE OF...AN ACT FOR APPORTIONING AND ASSESSING A TAX OF FIVE MILLION SIX HUNDRED AND ONE THOUSAND AND TWENTY-FIVE POUNDS SIX SHILLINGS AND SEVEN PENCE [caption title]

[Boston], 1780. completed in manuscript and signed by Gardner in lower margin. Minor soiling and splits along some fold lines, spotting and old repair in left margin, faint dampstain toward right edge. Additional manuscript text visible on verso, though illegible. Good. Expertly matted, and protected with mylar sheet. A scarce tax warrant blank form, here issued to the town of Newcastle, by Henry Gardner as treasurer of Massachusetts. 1780 was a difficult year in the financial history of the American Revolution. In May of that year two Connecticut regiments mutinied over lack of pay, while in October the value of Continental currency sank to 1/177th of its face value. Growing desperate for additional funds and supplies, the several states did what all governments do in similar straits: they raised taxes. This broadside grants sweeping authority to local Massachusetts governments to tax a variety of real estate transactions and property. Bereft of reliable demographic data, the act also calls for an accurate list of inhabitants and their "rateable estates." The effort was likely a failure. The tremendous population fluxes during the Revolution due to war death and Loyalist desertion made the statistical enumeration of inhabitants nearly impossible. At least four similar warrants were issued by Gardner throughout the year. Fittingly, Gardner was one of the first officials of the new government to draw his salary entirely from public revenue. Extremely rare. Bristol locates only one copy, at the Library of Congress. BRISTOL 5128. NAIP w018365. MASSACHUSETTS BROADSIDES 2260-2263 (ref). APPLETON'S CYCLOPÆDIA II, p.598.         Very Rare 1780 Broadside notice of Ratification by Referendum of the Massachusetts State Constitution.

Boston, 1780. 10" x 16". "Broadside: State of Massachusetts-Bay, In Convention, June 16, 1780. Whereas, upon due Examination of the Returns… it appears that more than Two-thirds of the Inhabitants thereof… have expressed their Approbation of the Form of Government. [Boston: probably Benjamin Edes, 1780]. Folio half-sheet of laid paper, one page, 10"" X 16"". Signed in type by James Bowdoin, President and Samuel Barrett, Secretary. Fold lines, light pencil notation on verso. Fine condition.Massachusetts congressional broadside announcing the results of the public vote to adopt the State Constitution, the only one of the 13 original state constitutions that did not require wholesale revision following the ratification of the U.S. Constitution. With the leading expert on constitutional law during the Revolution, John Adams, as its chief architect, the Massachusetts State Constitution replaced the colonial charter and served as a model for the U.S. Constitution-particularly in its strict separation of powers and system of checks and balances. “The process of constitution-making in Massachusetts gave life to what was then the revolutionary concept of ‘We the People,’ a phrase traceable to the Preamble of the Massachusetts Constitution of 1780 and, later, made famous as the inspirational first words of the United States Constitution” (Robert J. Brink). The full text of the Massachusetts Constitution first appeared shortly after March 2, 1780 from the Boston press of Benjamin Edes, a Son of Liberty and one of the organizers of the Boston Tea Party. Edes was the printer of the radical and influential Boston Gazette, which counted among its contributors John Adams, Samuel Adams and other leaders of the Revolution. This is the rare broadside announcement of public endorsement of the Massachusetts Constitution. While it bears no imprint statement, it was probably also printed by Benjamin Edes. Not only does it announce the formal adoption of the Constitution, but also declares an effective date for implementation, sets a date for convening the first General Court, and outlines procedures for electing the Governor, Senators and Representatives. The 1780 Massachusetts Constitution, though extensively amended, still serves her. It is the oldest continuously-used constitution of any state or nation in the world, and this scarce broadside announces its legitimacy. Evans 16846. Ford 2259."

LE MAJOR ROBERT ROGER [sic] COMMANDANT EN CHEF LES TROUPES INDIENNES AU SERVICE DES AMERICAINS [caption title]

Paris: chez Esnauts et Rapilly, 1780. Light soiling. Very good. A rare French portrait of Major Robert Rogers, showing him in his military uniform with musket. This portrait is copied from the best known image of Rogers, produced in London in 1776. That image shows him from the knees up and looking to his right, a powder horn at his waist, and with three Indians in the background. In this French version he is looking to his left and is pictured from the waist up, and the Indians have been removed from the background. Rogers acted as a scout for the 1755 expedition against Crown Point, and in 1756 he became the captain of an independent company of Rangers. He made scores of raids against the French in New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, going as far west as the shores of Lake Huron. His exploits made him the most romantic and famous figure of the war in America. He published A CONCISE ACCOUNT OF NORTH AMERICA and the JOURNALS OF MAJOR ROBERT ROGERS in 1765, which brought him further fame and recognition. We can find no listings of this French portrait in OCLC, though there are copies in the Anne S.K. Brown military collection at Brown University and the National Army Museum in London. Those copies do not have the engraved number "126" within the plate mark, however, as does our copy.

Op. 3]. Six Quartettos for two Violins a Tenor and Violoncello with a Thorough Bass for the Harpsichord or Organ. Op. III. Price 10s.6d. [Parts]

Longman & Broderip [PN 364] [1780-1798], London - An enigmatic edition, possibly unrecorded. Not in BUC, COPAC, RISM, WorldCat, or KVK. III:C13).". it is clear that Vanhal was one of the best composers of the time – innovative, imaginative and original. He was also influential, but to what extent is difficult to assess. However, he unquestionably contributed significantly to music in Europe, and his published music, issued by many publishers, stimulated the public and the entire industry. His career, which led him from bondage to comfortable independence, reflects the influence of Emperor Joseph II and the democratic principles he espoused in Viennese society.

In dessen Auftrag entstand JOHANN CHRISTOPH ADELUNGs epochemachende Schulgrammatik. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

ANNO REGNI GEORGII II. REGIS MAGNAE BRITANNIAE, FRANCIAE, & HIBERNIAE, VICESIMO SECUMNDO. AT THE PARLIAMENT BEGUN AND HOLDEN AT WESTMINSTER, THE TENTH DAY OF NOVEMBER, ANNO DOMINI 1747...AN ACT FOR AMENDING, EXPLAINING, AND REDUCING INTO ONE ACT OF PARLIAMENT, THE LAWS RELATING TO THE GOVERNMENT OF HIS MAJESTY'S SHIPS, VESSELS, AND FORCES BY SEA

London: Printed by Charles Eyre and William Strahan, 1780. Small quarto. Full dark blue morocco, gilt, gilt inner dentelles; cover embellished with gilt-tooled Star, Garter, Royal Motto, and royal initials of King George III. Light wear to extremities. Multiple bookplates and remarkable provenance, as detailed below. Very good. In a custom clamshell box, gilt leather label. Two Acts of Parliament concerning the Navy and Naval Affairs which have been specially bound for King George III. The first act, passed under George II, explains and condenses several Acts of Parliament into one clearer and more manageable act. The second act, paginated continuously but with its own titlepage, is an act to explain and amend the previous act. We locate one copy on OCLC, at the Society of the Cincinnati. This work does not appear to be listed in the ESTC. This copy is remarkably of note due to its provenance. The binding is stamped with the arms and initials of King George III, tooled in the Star and Garter and topped with a crown. The front endpapers bear many bookplates, beginning with the bookplate of the Duke of Sussex, son of George III and the most famous book collector among his sons, with a clipping from the Sussex auction. Here it was evidently bought by his brother, the Duke of Clarence, and has his bookplate; a naval officer most of his life, he would have been particularly interested in the subject. Clarence later became William IV, and the volume passed to the First Earl of Munster, illegitimate son of William IV and his mistress Dorothy Jordan. Although he was treated well and made a member of the Privy Council by his cousin Victoria, the Earl killed himself in 1842. The volume was acquired by the 2nd Lord Stanley of Aderley, a prominent political figure and well- known collector. From the Stanley family the volume passed to another famous English book collector, Robert Hovenden, who made a fortune in the wig business and spent his profits on books. After him it was owned by Dr. Francis Gray Smart, another collector and antiquary. Sometime after Smart's death in 1913, the volume came into the hands of the great English collector Major J.R. Abbey, best remembered for his great bibliographies of English illustrated works (his collections now reside at the Yale Center for British Art). Abbey's penciled notes are on the flyleaf. This volume was sold with his remaining books and manuscripts at auction in the late 1960s. A wonderful volume with a truly stupendous provenance.

A STATE OF THE EXPEDITION FROM CANADA, AS LAID BEFORE THE HOUSE OF COMMONS, BY LIEUTENANT-GENERAL BURGOYNE, AND VERIFIED BY EVIDENCE; WITH A COLLECTION OF AUTHENTIC DOCUMENTS

London, 1780. Large quarto. Modern half calf and marbled boards. Some maps neatly repaired on old folds. The first edition, in large quarto format, of Burgoyne's defense of his conduct as commander of the British expedition down the Hudson Valley from Canada in 1777. Intended to cut the New England colonies off from the rest of rebellious America, the expedition ended in disaster at Saratoga, where American forces soundly defeated Burgoyne and forced his capitulation. Herein Burgoyne answers the inquiry of the House of Commons, demonstrating that the forces he was given were not sufficient to accomplish the task. This is the most important source for information about the campaign, illustrated with excellent maps and plans. The "Plan of the Encampment and Position of the Army under His Excelly. Lt. General Burgoyne at Swords House on Hudson's River near Stillwater..." depicts, among other particulars, the "First and Second Positions of that part of the Army engaged on the 19th of September." Tipped to the margin of that plan, as an overlay, is a section of a similar map depicting the "Third and Fourth Positions..." of the Army on that same date. The "Plan of the Encampment and Position of the Army under his Excelly. Lt. General Burgoyne at Braemus Heights..." also has an overlay tipped to the margin of the plan indicating the position of Burgoyne's Army on Oct. 8. On the printed plan beneath the overly is indicated the General's camp from Sept. 20 to Oct. 7.

ANNO REGNI GEORGII II. REGIS MAGNAE BRITANNIAE, FRANCIAE, & HIBERNIAE, VICESIMO SECUMNDO. AT THE PARLIAMENT BEGUN AND HOLDEN AT WESTMINSTER, THE TENTH DAY OF NOVEMBER, ANNO DOMINI 1747...AN ACT FOR AMENDING, EXPLAINING, AND REDUCING INTO ONE ACT OF PARLIAMENT, THE LAWS RELATING TO THE GOVERNMENT OF HIS MAJESTY'S SHIPS, VESSELS, AND FORCES BY SEA.

London: Printed by Charles Eyre and William Strahan, 1780.. 62pp. OCLC 70821711.
