First Edition collective adorned with a portrait frontispiece, which is Gabriel Henri Gaillard.Full mottled calf time. Smooth spine decorated. Part of title and volume number in red morocco. Head cover of Volume I threadbare, the volumes V and VI partly frayed. Volume VI of the upper jaw split in mind. Some corners bumped. Good copy.We can not let Belloy as a great playwright despite the success of his plays, especially the incredible national and popular success of the Siege of Calais. Yet the value of this edition of the theater and the world of letters in the eighteenth is important. Every part of the author is indeed accompanied by many elements, prefaces, memoirs, letters, notes and research that explain not only the public reception, but also quarrels with the party of philosophers, support and disavowal of Voltaire. As a writer, trying to resurrect Belloy classical tragedy, his essay on the tragedy of public taste then reflected (Gluck had set to music Racine in his opera Iphigénie en Tauride) approached; classical tragedy became in the second half of the eighteenth nationalist literary model, yet contemporary style of the invention of a new theater, the Diderot.         America divided into her principal States .. "L'Amerique divisée en ses proncipales Etats Assujettie aux Observations Astronomiques Par Le Sr Janvier Geographe

Americas: Venice, Remondini, 1779. Copper engraved map of the continent of America from Santini's "Atlas universel dressé sur les meilleures cartes modernes". Original outline colour; verso blank. The map after Janvier shows the Americas with various discoveries noted: Davis land, discovered in 1687 is shown, along with Quiros' discoveries in 1605. The entry to the Sea of the West supposedly discovered by Juan De Fuca in 1591 and Martin D'Aguilar in 1603 is noted quite prominently and inaccurately. The title cartouche to upper right is totally new, it depicts a river filled with unusual beaver dams with pine and palm trees, and has been moved from the lower left. Dark impression; some light soiling to blank margins. Francois [Francesco] Santini was an Italian cartographer and map publisher based in Venice, who re-issued the works of Robert de Vaugondy, Homann's Heirs and De L'Isle. Cartography in Italy was then at a rather low ebb, so Santini, essentially a publisher rather than a map-maker modelled his work on two of the leading practitioners of cartography in Europe, the French map-makers Gilles and Didier Robert de Vaugondy and their "Atlas Universel" first published in 1758 and running to many editions; its commercial success led Santini, to commission a new set of plates, published between 1776-84, being almost exact copies of the original French maps to which were added new maps of Italy for the home market. Janvier, Jean Denis [Robert]1746 ?" 1776 Was a cartographer active in Paris between 1746 and 1776 Jean Janvier (1746 ?" 1776) produced a series of maps in the later half of the century. While there is some confusion about his Christian name, his maps usually were inscribed "Le Sieur Janvier". He is best known for his collaboration with engraver Jean Lattre for an "Atlas moderne ou collection de cartes sur toutes les parties du globe terrestre par plusieurs auteurs ... Paris: Latte & Delalain, ." first released in 1762 and in several later editions some by C. F. Delamarche and by Chez Remondini. Remondini (fl. c. 1657 - 1861) were a family of printers who worked originally based in Bassano del Grappa, near Venice. Giovanni Antonio Remondini (1634-1711), the family patriarch, was born in Padua in 1634. In 1657, he took a home the main square of Bassano where he opened a shop drapes, wool, silk and iron tools. He also sold woodcuts of saints which proved popular with local farmers who believed they bought spiritual protection. When Giovanni died in 1711 his printing business fell into the hands of his son, Joseph Remondini. In 1750 Joseph expended the family business into Venice proper. Having several paper factories established by Giovanni Antonio, the Remondini were in a position to undercut competitors in Venice. The Remondini employed a number of talented engravers, including Paolo Santini, an Abbot who specialized in sacred images as well as cartography. Their corpus includes several beautifully produced atlases, though, cartographically speaking, little in the way of original work. The family fell into decline following the Napoleonic invasions, finally closing their doors in 1861 Americas America as Continent Mer du Ouest

Kanga shinan [trans. A Guide to Chinese Painting]

Numerous full-page or double-page woodcuts. 31 folding leaves; 36 folding leaves. Two vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers (wrappers wormed & a little worn), orig. block printed title labels on upper covers, new stitching. Kyoto: 1779. First edition of this instruction manual for landscape painting and one of the artist's four most important works. According to Chibbett, Tatebe (1719-74), was perhaps the most talented of Yuhi's pupils. He was "sent by an Edo patron to Nagasaki to study painting under Yuhi. By this time Ryotai was already an authority of Japanese literature, particularly waka poetry, on which he wrote more than one book. Despite his inclination toward native literature, he was enormously attracted to the Chinese painting styles of Shen and Yuhi, and also studied several other Chinese painters including Li Yung-yun while in Nagasaki. He was not a prolific illustrator, but the four works by which he is best known were all of outstanding quality...With rare exceptions, most of his illustrations were in black and white, and he was especially skillful at using graded ink washes to achieve effects."-Chibbett, The History of Japanese Printing and Book Illustration, p. 224. Internally, a fine set. WorldCat puts this under Takebe. ❧ Brown, Block Printing & Book Illustration in Japan, p. 115-"The first editions of his books...were printed on the Chinese toshi paper, and are not often found now." Hillier, The Art of the Japanese Book, I, pp. 265-66-"Kanga Shinan, 'A Guide to Chinese Painting', 1779, is a posthumously published work...It is more explicitly a teaching manual, we are back once more in the drawing-class, and there is a great deal that is dry and pedagogic in the prints. Yet is was obviously a very much used book, and further editions were called for in 1802 and 1818. The most remarkable tribute to its reputation came from the artist Kawamura Bumpo, who, when in 1810 he came to publish his own book of instruction...entitled it Kanga Shinan Nihen, 'A Guide to Chinese Painting, Second Part,' clearly implying that he wished it to be seen as a sequel to Kanyosai's work." .

Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy produced their maps and terrestrial globes working together as father and son.       London, J. Wilkie, 1779.FIRST EDITION, 1779, 8vo, approximately 210 x 125 mm, 8¼ x 4¾ inches, pages: [2], 1 - 85, bound in half morocco over marbled sides, gilt dividing lines, gilt lettering to spine with gilt motif and rules at head and tail, marbled endpapers. A very good copy of the first edition. Reprinted the following year in London, there was no American edition until 1855. Joseph Galloway (1731?1803) was a prominent loyalist during the American Revolution. He was born at West River, Maryland and moved with his father to Pennsylvania in 1740, where he received a liberal schooling. He studied law, was admitted to the bar and began practice in Philadelphia. Galloway was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 1757 - 1775 and served as Speaker of the House from 1766 - 1774. He was a member of the Continental Congress in 1774, where he proposed a compromise plan for Union with Great Britain which would provide the colonies with their own parliament subject to the crown. He signed the nonimportation agreement, but was opposed to independence of the thirteen colonies and remained loyal to the King. In December of 1776, Galloway joined the British General Howe and accompanied him on his capture of Philadelphia. During the British occupation, he was appointed Superintendent of Police, and headed the civil government. When the British withdrew, he went with them, and, in 1778, he moved to England. That same year, the Pennsylvania General Assembly convicted him of high treason and confiscated his estates. In 1779 he was examined before the House of Commons on the conduct of the war in America, and made accusations against the British commander, claiming that the failure of the British was because of General Howe's incompetence. That same year, the Pennsylvania General Assembly convicted him of high treason and confiscated his estates. In 1779 he was examined before the House of Commons on the conduct of the war in America, and made accusations against the British commander, claiming that the failure of the British was because of General Howe's incompetence.         Great Revolutionary War letter to Aaron Burr regarding a British prisoner who would soon be his brother-in-law

"Autograph letter signed ?Jno. Beatty?, 2p, 7.5? x 12? Middle Brook [New Jersey], May 23, 1779, Commissary of Prisoners Office. Overall toning, some minor paper loss, professionally repaired. In response to a letter written by Aaron Burr, Beatty writes: ""Dear Sir, I am this moment favored with yours of yesterday. The duplicate of which you allude to in your postscript has not yet reached me. Thank you for the good opinion you are pleased to entertain of my disposition to heal prisoners under my care, with every indulgent civility in my power and not incompatible with the line of my office. / I have been made acquainted with Mr. Devisme [De Visme] Character, as also every circumstance attending his capture, and I am happy in having it in my power to indulge him at your request in remaining for the present with his friends at Paramus. / I wish for no other security than his prudence and your Honour but as it is official, am obliged to prescribe to him the inclosed parole, which you will be pleased to have signed and transmitted to me by the first conveyance. / It does not lie with me to give him permission to go to N. York for any space of time and indeed I would advise him not to urge a matter of what kind at this time as it would appear unreasonable and I am confident it would be denied [to] him. / You will be kind enough to present my respects to Mrs. Prevost which I have the honor of some small acquaintance with. I am . . . with much esteem / Your mo: Obt / Hum Servt [your most obedient servant] / John Beatty.? In postscript ?Col. Aaron Burr?Peter De Visme was a British officer, captured at sea. His sister, Mrs. Theodosia [De Visme] Prevost was then married to Major General Augustine Prevost of the British Army, wrote to her personal friend, George Washington, who replied on May 19, 1779, ?Madam: It is much to be regreted, that the pleasure of obeying the first motions in favor of misfortune, is not always in our power. I should be happy, could I consider myself at liberty to comply with your request, in the case of your brother, Mr. Peter De Visme, But, as I have heretofore taken no direction in the disposal of marine prisoners, I cannot with propriety, interfere on the present occasion; however great the satisfaction I should feel in obliging, where you are interested. Your good sense will perceive this, and find a sufficient excuse in the delicacy of my situation.? After her husband?s death during the Revolutionary War in the West Indies, Theodosia De Visme Provost married Aaron Burr in 1782.John Beatty (1749-1826) , a Delegate and a Representative from New Jersey; was graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1769; studied medicine in Philadelphia; entered the Revolutionary Army in 1775 attained the rank of major when he was made prisoner at the surrender of Fort Washington; after his exchange was appointed commissary general of prisoners with the rank of colonel May 28, 1778; resigned March 31, 1780, resumed the practice of medicine in Princeton, N.J.; member of the State council 1781-1783; Member of the Continental Congress in 1784-1785; appointed by President Lee as one of the special committee to receive and take leave of General Lafayette in the name of the Continental Congress while it was in session at Trenton on December 11, 1784; member of the State convention that adopted the Federal Constitution in 1787; member of the State general assembly in 1789 and 1790, serving as speaker; elected as a Pro-Administration candidate to the Third Congress (March 4, 1793-March 3, 1795); brigadier general of the Somerset Militia 1793-1796; secretary of state of New Jersey 1795-1805.         The general state of medical and chirurgical practice exhibited

London: Almon..., 1779. Graham, James (1745-94). The general state of medical and chirurgical practice, exhibited. . . . 12mo. 248pp. London: Printed and sold by Mr. Almon . . . ,1779. 167 x 101 mm. Modern quarter morocco, marbled boards. Minor browning & foxing, a few stains, library stamps and markings on title and a few other leaves. Very good copy. "Sixth edition," so styled. OCLC cites a fourth edition of 1778, and a 1776 pamphlet of 22 pages entitled A Short Inquiry into the Present State of Medical Practice, which may represent an earlier edition. OCLC also cites two other 1779 "sixth editions" with different paginations (x, 71, [1]pp.; 71, [1], 37, [1]pp.) and imprint reading "Printed and sold by all the principal booksellers in Great Britain." The present edition includes a section entitled "A sketch: Or, short description of Dr. Graham's medical apparatus, &c., erected about the beginning of the year 1780. . . ," indicating that this edition may have been published later than its imprint date. Graham, one of the most notorious British quacks, studied medicine at Edinburgh but never qualified as a physician. He spent some time in America during his twenties, including two years in Philadelphia where he learned of Franklin's electrical experiments. He began touting electricity as a cure-all, particularly for sexual ailments, and upon his return to London in 1775 began to practice "electric medicine," quickly attracting a rich and fashionable clientele. In 1779 Graham opened his celebrated "Temple of Health," where clients willing to pay the two-guinea entrance fee "could wander through ornately furnished rooms, breathe in the perfumed air, listen to music or hear Graham delivering lectures on health, buy medicines, inspect the 'medico-electrical apparatus,' or watch scantily-clad young women pose among the statues" (museumofhoaxes). One of these young women was Emma Lyon, destined to achieve a notoriety of her own as Emma Hamilton, wife of Sir William Hamilton and lover of the British naval hero Lord Horatio Nelson. The highlight of the Temple of Health was Graham's electrified "Celestial Bed," where for an additional fifty pounds couples suffering from impotence or sterility could have their sexual and reproductive powers restored. "The bed was twelve feet long by nine wide and could be tilted so that it lay at various angles. The mattress was filled with 'sweet new wheat or oat straw, mingled with balm, rose leaves, and lavender flowers,' as well as hair from the tails of fine English stallions" (museumofhoaxes).         JOHN PAUL JONES, COMMANDER OF A SQUADRON IN THE SERVICE OF THE THIRTEEN UNITED STATES OF NORTH AMERICA, 1779 [caption title]

[N.p. ca. 1779].. Mezzotint, 14 x 10 inches. Matted. Trimmed to the plate mark. Minor dust- soiling, mild staining to bottom edge, not affecting the caption. Very good. A stunning portrait of John Paul Jones, the father of the American Navy, and the source of one of the greatest quotes of the American Revolution, "I have not yet begun to fight." Jones allegedly uttered the line after being asked to surrender while his ship, the Bon Homme Richard, was sinking. "Commissioned a lieutenant in the Continental Navy by Congress in 1775, John Paul Jones, a Scotsman by birth, soon proved himself exceptional in both seamanship and courage. The DAB describes Jones as 'homely, small, thin, and active,' but his size and stature never detracted from his proud bearing" (Creswell). CRESSWELL 132.

Reflections on the Present State of the East-India Trade

London: [no printer], 1779. Octavo pamphlet, 16 pp., title-page and last page rather worn, simple faded number stamp at head of title; very good in modern marbled paper wrappers. Sailing instructions for traders: keep New Holland to port. Very rare pamphlet: the East India Company, Captain Cook, and the opening up of a broader South Seas trade. In this small essay Forrest sought to unshackle the East India traders from their slavish adherence to returning to Europe by the Cape of Good Hope, instead arguing for a much broader trade with the countries of the Indian Ocean and south-east Asia, with ships returning via the Pacific ("leaving New Holland on the left hand"), taking advantage of the "fair wind" in "a high south latitude."Forrest was involved in the 1770 settlement of Balambangan, a colonising project based on recommendations by Alexander Dalrymple; from 1774 he was in the service of the East India Company, who wanted to extend their sources of trade in the direction of New Guinea. The same year as this small pamphlet was published Forrest also issued his classic voyage account, A Voyage to New Guinea, and the Moluccas, from Balambangan (1779), which detailed his 1774-1776 journey of exploration in the region. The Voyage to New Guinea is well known for its dedication to Sir Joseph Banks ("Who thirsting after Knowledge, left the Enjoyment of Opulence and Ease, to sail round the World"), so it is no surprise that much of the pamphlet also relates to similar themes.Forrest first wrote the piece as early as 1769, but obviously returned to the theme with his new-found expertise uppermost in his mind, adding the new postscript about Cook. He begins with a potted history of the East India Company which includes some comments on his own shipwreck in 1762 and several months spent living with the Dutch. He then expands his ambitious proposal on trade, imagining a second East India Company which would work in sympathetic collusion with the first but go much further afield in the region. In the 1779 post-script he comments that the time is ripe for his ideas to be pressed into service, not least because in the intervening decade "the method of circumnavigating recommended by him, has been successfully prosecuted by Captain Cook..."
