A full and genuine history of the inhuman and unparallel'd murders of Mr. William Galley, a Custom-House Officer at the port of Southampton:

      J. Breadhower, at Portsmouth; J. Grist, at Portsmouth Common; W. Stapley, at Havant; W. Lee, at Lewes; T. White, at Arundel; and P. Humphry and W. Andrews, in Chichester. 1779. 12mo., viii 269 (3) iv 26pp., with seven engraved plates, with generally pretty minor dust-marking or soiling, contemporary calf, neatly and sympathetically rebacked, with gilt lines and raised bands and original lettering piece. A good, perhaps very good, copy. A very scarce early edition (ESTC showing copies at only 5 libraries: BL Brighton Central Harvard Law Huntington Un. of Memphis. OCLC adding Michigan Un.). The main text (without the sermon) had been printed in 1749 but is known in a tiny number of surviving institutional copies. (It went on to be reprinted several times in the 19th century). The criminal exploits of the so-called Hawkhurst Gang of smugglers, ruffians and thugs was a colourful chapter in the mid-18th century story of the seemingly relentless battle along the Sussex, Hampshire and Dorset coasts between the smugglers and the Customs Officers. It has been often written about and many an inn or public house along the coast has gained financially from a genuine or pretended connection with the smuggling industry. It is said that the trials and subsequent executions of so many of the ringleaders in early 1749 dramatically reduced the activities of smugglers along the south coast. The seven engraved plates, comprising nine actual engravings vividly illustrate some of the atrocious crimes of which the men were convicted.

Dell' uso ed abuso della cioccolata.

Venedig Locatelli 1779 - (18,5 x 13,5 cm.) 100 S. Moderner Halbpergamentband. Erstmals 1775 erschienenes Werk über die Vorzüge des Schokoladetrinkens. - "Is it cold outside? Why not warm up with a steaming cup of hot chocolate? So advised the 18th-century Italian physician Giovanni Anfossi, in. 'Dell’uso ed abuso della cioccolata'. His recommendation was not unqualified, however. Anfossi’s treatise on the origin, composition, and medicinal use of chocolate contains, among other things, arguments both for and against drinking chocolate. Ultimately, however, Anfossi praised the use of chocolate for its high nutritional value, its aphrodisiac qualities, and as a panacea for all sorts of physical maladies" (History of Science Collections). - Exlibris.         Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World.

Paris: , 1779. By Lemuel Gulliver. 2 volumes, duodecimo (144 x 81 mm). Contemporary sprinkled sheep, smooth spines gilt-ruled in compartments with tan morocco letterpieces to second and third, twin gilt rules to covers, edges sprinkled red, marbled endpapers. Joints rubbed, craquelure to spines, light wear to tips and board-edges, vol. 2 front board with a little stripping and upper outer corner restored, very pale tide-mark to top edge of prelims in both volumes, else internally crisp and fresh. A very good set. A handsomely bound copy in an appealing contemporary binding, the Paris imprint unusual for an English-language edition of this date. Gulliver's Travels was first published in London in 1726 and sold particularly well in French, with the first translation appearing in January 1727 and an abridgement by Abbé Desfontaines in April; the war between Big-Endians and Small-Endians was readily intelligible as an allegory of the conflict between Catholic France and Protestant England, while Blefescu's manipulation of party divisions among the Lilliputians recalled how the French tended to profit from Whig-Tory wrangling (Erskine-Hill, Swift: Gulliver's Travels, p. 29). This edition is fairly well-represented in America and mainland Europe, but Copac traces just two copies in British and Irish libraries (BL and Cambridge).

The Works of the English Poets. With Prefaces, Biographical and Critical.

London: For H. Hughs; For C. Bathurst, Et al, 1779-1781 - Small 8vo, 68 volumes, including 10 volumes of prefaces and 2 index volumes, one of 1500 copies, first editions of the prefaces, portrait of Johnson (here bound at the beginning of the first volume of the "Prefaces". Contemporary full mottled calf, blind-stamped arms on covers, spines gilt in compartments with morocco lettering-pieces. Sir Charles Stuart, Baron Stuart de Rothesay (1779-1845), grandson of the 3rd Earl of Bute, Prime Minister, his arms in blind on covers. Rothschild 1262; Courtney and Smith p.140. A very fine copy of Johnson's canonical edition of the English poets. Johnson had signed a contract with a consortium of booksellers on 29 March 1777, agreeing to supply "a concise account" of some fifty poets. The first instalment appeared in March 1779, the second in 1780, and the third in May 1781. Johnson's "major lives were quickly recognized as setting a new standard for English literary biography. In particular, the surveys of Cowley, Milton, Dryden, Swift, and Pope exemplify Johnson's serious concern with the deepest springs of creativity, as well as his ability to explore with considerable insight some individuals whose character and work aroused profound antipathy in him. Even in an age of greater theoretical sophistication, his reading of mainstream poetry from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries remains canonical, by reason of its attention to verbal detail, its decisive judgments, and its robust expression".         De l'administration provinciale, et de la réforme de l'impôt.

Basle: [no printer,], 1779. [Bound with:] Manière de simplifier la plan proposé. Addition à placer à la fin de l'ouvrage intitulé, De l'administration provinciale et de la réforme de l'impôt. Quarto (256 x 195 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, triple line gilt rule border to covers, spine decorated gilt, red morocco label, red edges, marbled endpapers, green silk ribbon marker. Dampierre bookplate to front pastedown. Closed tear to the 12 leaves of the "Manière de simplifier le plan proposé" skilfully repaired, affecting one or two characters only; an excellent copy in a splendid contemporary binding. First edition, very rare, especially complete with the additional 24 page note. A French lawyer and economist, Le Trosne studied natural law philosophy with Pothier, planning to become a magistrate. He joined the Physiocrats in 1764 by publishing a book defending the free trade in grain and articles in the Ephémérides du citoyen and other journals, followed by De l'ordre social in 1777. In 1775, the growing difficulties of solving the problem of taxation, along with the decreasing revenues of the government drew public attention to the project which Mirabeau had been advocating as early as 1750. The Académie of Toulouse invited written solutions to this problem, of which this was one of the essays submitted. The work is an important source of information on the organisation of society before 1789. "A ponderous tome, scientific in tone, which, from the point of view of the financier, had the advantage of appearing four years before the work of Necker on the administration of the financial affairs of France; and from the point of view of the politician, of appearing ten years before the celebrated night of 5th August 1789" (A. Courtois in Palgrave). Le Trosne omitted to take into consideration the requirements of the clergy and the work was outlawed in 1780, the year of his death, which may explain its rarity. A two-volume octavo edition followed in 1788. From the celebrated library of the Ducs de Luynes, with the Dampierre bookplate.

Edinburgh, J. Balfour and Co.; London, T. Cadell, 1779. Volumes I and II only of 6 volumes, FIRST EDITIONS 1779 and 1782. 4to, approximately 280 x 210 mm, 11 x 8¼ inches, pages: xxi, [3], ix, [1], ix, [1]-555; xii, [20], [1]-461, bound in modern quarter calf over marbled boards, raised bands, gilt ornament in compartments, contrasting gilt lettered morocco labels, new endpapers. Volume I: 2 small signatures, 1 crossed through and a number on title page, corners of first and last 20 leaves dog-eared and slightly dust-soiled, 8 of them neatly repaired with old paper at the tip, final 5 leaves have larger crease at lower corner just affecting text but with no loss of legibility, closed tear to inner margin of 1 prelim page, neatly repaired, 1 text page torn across and repaired neatly, no loss of text, contents otherwise clean; Volume II: the same inscription to title page as in Volume I, contents clean. Bindings tight and firm. Very good copies of Volumes I and II in first edition. Volume I contains 59 pages devoted to the principles of Newton's philosophy in the Appendix and Chapter XIX expresses some of the author's criticism of the Newtonian system. Volume II is subtitled "containing a further examination of the principles of Sir Isaac Newton's philosophy" and Book V is entitled Of the Principles of Sir Isaac Newton's Astronomy and consists of 146 pages in which the author finds fault with various aspects of Newton's Principia. The 6 volumes were issued over a period of 20 years from 1779 to 1799 but only the first two contain criticism and commentary on Newton's work. They are considered a defence of Greek philosophy and are firmly attributed to Lord Monboddo (1714-1799), a Scottish judge and scholar who is remembered today as the founder of modern comparative historical linguistics.
