Contemporary blue paper wrappers.

Quérard VIII, 339; not in Borba de Moraes. A little-known account of Brazilian agricultural techniques, especially in the province of Minas Gerais, by the leading botanist and explorer Auguste de Saint-Hilaire (1779-1853), born in Orléans. Saint-Hilaire explored Uruguay and central and southern Brazil in the years 1816 to 1822, taking special interest in their flora and serving as a correspondent for the Académie des Sciences already before he returned to France and began publishing his findings. He became a member of the Academy in 1830 and its president in 1835. The present essay is undated but cites one of the author's publications of August 1837. With a presentation inscription from the author on the first page: "Offert à Mr. Fée par l'auteur". Slightly foxed but otherwise in very good condition and wholly untrimmed.

Folio (391 x 271mm). With 2 engraved title pages, 2 pages engraved index and 200 finely hand-coloured engraved plates. Contemporary half calf, gilt ornamented spines in 5 compartments with red gilt lettered label. A very rare supplement to Buchoz 's splendid work "Collection de Fleurs de la Chine & de l'Europe'. Hunt (656) comments as follows on the present work: "This is one of the more important works of the copious Pierre Joseph Buc'hoz". Pierre Joseph Buchoz (1731-1807) was a French physician and naturalist. He produced some of the finest illustrated natural history works of the period. 'In some of these works, considerable use is made for the first time of drawings of Chinese plants executed by native artists and much of Buc'hoz's other works also have a distinctly oriental flavour" (Blunt & Stearn p. 179). The colouring of the plates is exquisite. The index gives descriptions of plates 1 to 200. A fine copy without any foxing.//Nissen BBI, 283; Hunt 656; Great Flower Books p. 52.

London: for W. Strahan and T. Cadell,, 1779. Translated by R. Potter. The second edition, corrected, with notes. 2 volumes, octavo (216 x 130 mm). Contemporary vellum, smooth spines gilt-tooled in compartments with central lyre-and-wreath tools and leaf-form cornerpieces, red and green morocco labels, marbled endpapers. Hayhurst, Lancashire retail chemist and discriminating collector of 18th-century literature in contemporary bindings, with his bookplate to the front pastedown of the first volume. Boards slightly sprung, light markings to covers, mild spotting to vol. 2 sig. S, a few trivial marks elsewhere. An excellent copy, bound with the half-titles. A handsomely bound copy. Potter (1721-1804), a clergyman by profession, achieved considerable fame through his blank-verse translations of the Greek tragedians. "His edition of Aeschylus was published to great acclaim in 1777 and brought him to the notice of London literary society. Elizabeth Montagu befriended the poor curate, and encouraged and financed him to produce a commentary on the plays which was presented to subscribers, and then included within a second edition in 1779" (ODNB). This copy with the ownership inscription of John Gilchrist Clark dated 1851 to the initial blank of each volume. Clark (1830-1881) was a chamberlain to the Duke of Buccleuch at Drumlanrig Castle, and the son-in-law of pioneer photographer William Henry Fox Talbot through his marriage to his daughter Matilda.

        A Voyage to New Guinea, and the Moluccas, from Balambangan;

London: printed by G. Scott; and sold by J. Robson; J. Donaldson; G. Robinson [in London]; and J. Bell, Edinburgh,, 1779. including an Account of Magindano, Sooloo, and other Islands … performed in the Tartar Galley, belonging to the Honourable East India Company, During the Years 1774, 1775, and 1776 … to which is added, a Vocabulary of the Magindano Tongue. Quarto, (300 × 233mm). Ninteenth-century half calf, marbled paper sides, red morocco label, spine gilt in compartments, slightly rubbed, front joint repaired. With engraved portrait after Sherwin, large folding map and 30 engraved plates and plans, 23 of them folding, many featuring coastal profiles accompanied by detailed charts. Some surface wear to boards, extremities a little worn; two plates rather heavily browned, some light browning elsewhere, short closed tear to the margin of the map, but internally a good, clean copy. First edition. For some time, before entering the service of the East India Company, Forrest had served in the Royal Navy, seeing action in 1757 under George Pocock against the French in the Bay of Bengal. The year 1762 found him in command of a company ship, "from which he seems to date his experience when, writing in 1782, he spoke of himself as having been more than twenty years in 'the country trade'; and as having made fifteen voyages from Hindustan to the East, and four voyages from England to India" (ODNB). In 1770 he pioneered the settlement at Balembangan at the eastern tip of Borneo and from here set out in 1724 in a native prahu renamed the Tartar accompanied by two English officers and 18 Malays. "In this unlikely craft he pushed further east than any of his company predecessors, eventually reaching Geelvinks Bay on the north coast of New Guinea. There he found one of the few nutmeg forests not under the control of the Dutch. After exploring Gilolo Passage … between New Guinea and the Moluccas, he sailed to Mindanao, where the Sultan gave him a free choice of locations for future British bases" (Howgego). On his return to Borneo he found that the Balembangan colony had been abandoned and so proceeded to the Malay Peninsula where, at Kedah, his two companions refused to proceed further bringing his odyssey to an end. "The voyage was one of examination and enquiry rather than of exploration, and the additions made to geographical knowledge were corrections of detail rather than startling discoveries, but the tact with which he conducted his intercourse with the natives, and the amount of work done in a small boat, deservedly won him credit as a navigator" (Hill).

Modern calf-backed marbled boards, very skillfully executed in period style. Varying paper stocks, as expected, a few of which are foxed, else in fine condition, as described below.         Versuch einer Grundlehre sammtlicher Kameralwissenschaften zum Gebrauche der Vorlesungen auf der Kurpfalzchen Kameral Hohenschule zu Lautern.

Lautern, im Verlage der Gesellschaft. 1779. 8vo., (16) + 280pp., near-contemporary inscription in ink at head of title, bound in old boards, with sprinkled edges, some wear to spine but still a very good copy. First edition. Written soon after Jung had accepted an appointment as lecturer on agriculture, technology, commerce and veterinary medicine in the newly established College of Cameralism at Kaiserslautern. In 1787 he moved to the University of Marburg as professor of economic, financial and statistical studies. 'As an economic writer, Jung belongs to the philanthropical and eclectic school, with strong absolutistic leanings which flourished in Germany during the second half of the 18th century under the influence of Sonnenfels, and of his theory of the largest possible population. On this last principle, he goes to the extreme of claiming the protection of the police for pregnant unmarried girls, even against their own parents. Land, in his opinion, might be subdivided to the minimum sufficient to supply the subsistence of a family. Jung was opposed to craft monopolies (Gilds), but favourable to the craft system.'

Published by M. Delafosse, [Paris 1779 - Hand-coloured engraving. Tipped onto larger sheet of fine laid paper. Very good condtion. A beautifully coloured print picturing one of the picturesque garden follies in the Parc Monceau, from Carmontelle's "Jardin de Monceau," a collection of plates depicting the innovative features and design of this famous Parisian park. Designed by Carmontelle for the Duc de Chartres (the future Duc d'Orléans) and erected between 1773 and 1778, the Parc Monceau was one of the first landscaped parks to be constructed in Paris. It was designed in the Anglo-Chinese style, which originated in England and reached the height of its popularity in France during the late eighteenth century. This style was characterized by immaculately manicured foliage and lawns and the particularly by the use of conventions such as fabriques or folies , small ornamental edifices replicating exotic structures like Graeco-Roman temples, Oriental pavilions, Turkish tents, and Egyptian pyramids, which were used to visually enhance the garden, elicit emotion, and evoke lyrical associations with foreign places and ancient cultures. Essentially self-taught, Louis de Carmontelle was an extremely versatile draughtsman, painter and engraver, whose rare engravings are highly prized today. His first entrée into fashionable French society was as a mathematics tutor to the children of the French nobility, and he later became a popular figure at the royal court, where he entertained courtiers and eminent visitors with his "proverbs" (witty observational verses), his novel "transparencies" (a precursor of the magic lantern in which panoramic views were projected through illuminated transparent paper), and the copious portraits he spontaneously executed upon request. In 1763, he was employed to tutor and entertain the son of the Duc d'Orléans, who several years later entrusted him with the design of the Parc Monceau, one of Carmontelle's greatest artistic achievements. Cf. Benezit, Dictionnaire Des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs , Vol. 3, p. 254-5.

A plan of Fort Montgomery and Fort Clinton, taken by His Majesty's forces, under the command of Maj. Gen.l Sir Henry Clinton, K.B: Survey'd by Major Holland, Surv.r Gen.l &c. . [With large inset titled:] Part of Hudsons River, shewing the position of Fort Montgomery and Fort Clinton, with the Chevaux de Frieze, cables, chains, &c to obstruct the passage of his Majesty's forces up the river. By Lieut. John Knight of the Royal Navy in 1777

London 1779 - Engraved and aquatint map, period hand colouring. 14 lettered references, large inset with title as above. Rare revolutionary chart of the Hudson River showing the American defenses, on the eve of the Battle of Fort Montgomery. On October 6, 1777, a British force led by Lieutenant General Sir Henry Clinton attacked Forts Montgomery and Clinton from the landward side, where the American defenses were only partially completed. Support from cannon fire from British ships on the Hudson River that had passed through the chevaux de frise on the lower river. By the end of the day, both forts had fallen to the British, who burned the forts and tore down the stonework buildings. However, the battle was a pyrrhic victory for the British. The campaign against the forts caused delays in reinforcing General John Burgoyne at Saratoga, where Americans forced the British surrender ten days later at the Battle of Saratoga before Clinton's forces could arrive. The present map, which depicts the Forts and the River defenses prior to the battle, is from The Atlantic Neptune , the finest large scale sea atlas of the United States and Canadian Atlantic coastline ever produced. The maps in the atlas were produced over a seven-year period (1775-82), and are well known for their accurate portrayal of various sounds, bays, bars, harbors as well as navigational hazards. This atlas was used extensively by the Royal Navy during the American Revolution. Des Barres studied under the great mathematician Daniel Bernoulli at the University of Basel, before continuing on to the Royal Military College at Woolwich. On the outbreak of the Seven Years war in 1756, he joined the British Royal American Regiment as a military engineer. He came to the attention of General James Wolfe, who appointed him to be his aide-de-camp. From 1762, Des Barres was enlisted to survey the coastlines of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and the Gulf of St.Lawrence, while his colleague, Samuel Holland charted the New England coast and further south. In 1774, Des Barres returned to England where he began work on the Neptune. His dedication to the project was so strong, that often at his own expense, he continually updated and added new charts and views up until 1784. That year he returned to Canada, where he remained for a further forty years, becoming a senior political figure and a wealthy land owner, and living to the advanced age of 103. The Atlantic Neptune was the first British sea atlas of her North American colonies, and one of the most important achievements of eighteenth century cartography. With an official commission from the Royal Navy, Des Barres published the first volume in London in 1775, which was soon followed by further volumes. Des Barres' monumental endeavor eventually featured over two-hundred charts and aquatint views, many being found in several states. All of the charts were immensely detailed, featuring both hydrographical and topographical information. The Neptune met with the highest acclaim from the beginning, and is today widely regarded as superior to all other atlases produced during its time. Henry Stevens identified only a single state of this chart, issued coloured or uncoloured, which appeared in some examples volume four, part two of the Atlantic Nepture; the map, however, is not listed in the engraved list of maps for that section, and given the rarity was likely not issued in all copies. National Maritime Museum: Henry Stevens Collection: HNS156; Cf. Phillips, Atlases 1198; Hornsby, Surveyors of Empire: Samuel Holland, J.F.W. Des Barres and the Making of the Atlantic Neptune (2011).

MÉMOIRE JUSTIFICATIF DE LA CONDUITE DE LA GRANDE BRETAGNE, EN ARRÊTANT LES NAVIRES ÉTRANGERS ET LES MUNITIONS DE GUERRE, DESTINÉES AUX INSURGENS DE L'AMÉRIQUE.

Londres: T. Harrison et S. Brooke, 1779. - vii,[1],60pp. Original plain wrappers. Edges wrinkled, with occasional small chips. Light dust soiling to wrappers and outer leaves, otherwise internally clean. Near fine. Untrimmed. In a half morocco and cloth box. Though maintaining a formal neutrality during the American Revolution, the Dutch Republic sold weapons to the rebellious colonists, resulting in British reprisals against Dutch vessels. This work makes the case for British seizures of munition-laden Dutch ships destined for the revolting American colonies. It was printed for private circulation among neutral maritime courts, and printed in French, which was the language of diplomacy at the time. "One of the most valuable tracts on the subject of supplying the American Colonies with the sinews of war during the Revolution. It is of great rarity" - Rosenbach. A scarce work, the first copy of this first edition that we have owned. HOWES M298, "aa." SABIN 44689. AMERICAN CONTROVERSY 79-70. ROSENBACH 4:246.

(Brunet, IV, 395. Maire, I, 246-255. Tchemerzine-Scheler, V, 76). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Mémoire sur la découverte du magnétisme animal

chez P. Fr. Didot le jeune, Geneve; et se trouve a Paris 1779 - First edition, pp. [2], vi, 85; 20th-century blue half morocco, gilt lettered spine; fine. Printing and the Mind of Man, 225: Anton Mesmer, an Austrian physician "maintained that a magnetic fluid pervades the universe, exists in every living being, and affects the nervous system. He found that there was a healing magnetic power in his own hands, and that he could obtain results in treating nervous disorders without a magnet, a faculty he called 'animal magnetism'.Fantastic scenes took place in his magnificent consulting rooms, where patients sat around a special tub, while Mesmer appeared, clad in lilac silk, waving an iron wand: perfume, theatrical costumes and dramatic illumination were all part of the treatment. Louis XVI set up a committee, with Benjamin Franklin as chairman and Lavoisier [and others] as some of the members, to investigate 'animal magnetism'. Their report condemned 'mesmerism' medically; but the idea had taken hold and spread all over Europe. There were also many serious disciples such as Puysegur, who developed hypnotism on scientific lines.Much more important scientifically were the experiments of Braid in Scotland and Charcot in Paris, and the development of psychoanalysis: Freud's first experiments were on hypnotic patients; and Jung was particularly close to mesmerism in his belief that consciousness could transcend time and place." On Poetry and Music, as they affect the mind; on Laughter, and Ludicrous Composition; on the Usefulness of Classical Learning. The third edition, corrected. Octavo. Contemporary calf, spine in compartments with gilt rules and raised bands, red morocco title label gilt, red speckled edges. Half-title, engraved frontispiece of Socrates dated 1780. Splitting to front joint and the rear joint starting at the head, headcap chipped, rubbing to extremities, a few minor marks and scratches to calf, slight damp stain to the fore-corner of frontispiece and a few early leaves, still a very good copy in unrestored original state. Presentation copy of the third edition, inscribed to the author's friend Sir William Forbes of Pitsligo, "Sir William Forbes from the author" on the first blank verso (and additionally inscribed to the same effect, but in a different and possibly later hand, on the front free endpaper), with Forbes's armorial bookplate to the front pastedown. James Beattie (1735-1803) was a significant figure of the Scottish Enlightenment, holding the chair of Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Aberdeen from 1760. In his philosophical works (such as An Essay on the Nature and Immutability of Truth, 1770, and Elements of Moral Science, 1790) he argued influentially for the idea of a "Common Sense" to counter the epistemological scepticism inculcated by Hume, and also against the institution of slavery. He was in addition well known for his poetry, in particular for The Minstrel (1771-4), which inspired the Wordsworth and the other Romantics. These three Essays were first published in 1773 (alongside a reissue of his 1770 Essay On the Nature and Immutability of Truth). Sir William Forbes, 6th Baronet Pitsligo (1739-1806) was a prominent Scottish banker, philanthropist, and writer, and long-time friend of James Beattie. Forbes was the dedicatee of a number of Beattie's works, and would become the author of Beattie's biography, published in 1806 as "An Account of the Life and Writings of James Beattie". He was also a friend of James Boswell (described in the Tour of the Hebrides as "a man of whom too much good cannot be said") and through him became a member of Samuel Johnson's literary dining club. Inscribed copies of Beattie's works are uncommon, and this is an excellent association.

Paul Jones Shooting a Sailor who had attempted to strike his Colours in an Engagement

, 1779. 1779. BOWLES, Carington, engraver and publisher. COLLETT, John, artist. Paul Jones Shooting a Sailor who had attempted to strike his Colours in an Engagement. London: Carington Bowles, circa 1779. Broadside, image measures 13 by 18 inches, trimmed close to image; entire sheet measures 13 by 19 inches. $16,000.Stirring large hand-colored engraved print of the great American naval commander in action during his famous and heated engagement with the HMS Serapis, firing a pistol point-blank at a sailor attempting to strike the American flag, with two wounded men nearby; Jones is stepping on the body of a dead man, with his cutlass under his left arm and four pistols stuck in his belt. Engraved by Carington Bowles after a painting by John Collett. This image depicts, albeit exaggeratedly and falsely, an incident during the encounter of Jones' ship, the 42-gun Bonhomme Richard, with the British 50-gun HMS Serapis, when a shell-shocked gunner shouted for quarter till Jones knocked him down with the butt of a pistol, saying ""I may sink, but I'll be damned if I strike."" The British public feared Jones and saw him as little more than a pirate, thus this rather negative portrayal of the man known in the United States as the ""Father of the American Navy,"" trampling his own dead and wounded in order to shoot his chief gunner, Henry Gardner, in the face. This only happened in the propagandistic fantasies of the British, who hated Jones. This was also the encounter during which Jones (may have) famously declared ""I have not yet begun to fight!"" in reply to a British officer's taunt as the outgunned Bonhomme Richard circled and attempted to engage the Serapis at close quarters. ""Meanwhile, the surviving seamen of the 42-gun Bonhomme Richard must have thought their commander, Capt. John Paul Jones, had gone insane. Separated by two feet, the double deck HMS Serapis, a well-made and brand new British escort ship, was shooting 18-pound cannon balls into the 14-year-old single deck Bonhomme Richard; cannon balls that from 200 yards could shoot through four feet of oak. Near the battle's end, half the crewmates on each ship were dead, there were three or four inches of blood and guts on the high deck of Bonhomme Richard and both ships were on fire. Capt. Pearson, commander of Serapis assumed Bonhomme Richard would be the first to surrender. He asked Jones, 'Do you strike?' According to battle expert Peter Reaveley, Jones screamed out, 'No! I'll sink, but I'm damned if I'll strike!' The following quotation is more famously noted as Jones' retort: 'I have not yet begun to fight!' The battle established the Continental Navy as a powerful force and Capt. John Paul Jones as a hero"" (Joanna Romansic, ""NHC Joins Search for John Paul Jones' Ship,"" Oct. 20, 2005, dcmilitary.com.). This image first appeared as a ""color mezzotint"" measuring approximately 10 by 14 inches; the present copy is a somewhat later and larger copperplate engraving, boldly colored in light blue, dark blue, brown, beige, pale yellow and red. Trimmed to the edge of the image and legend. A few minor wormholes, some repairs and expert restoration to versos and margins. A very good copy of this sensational print.

Revolutionary War stampless folded letter 1779 Daniel Loring to General Nixon re hardships in Sudbury associated with the War. 1779 stampless folded letter with manuscript "on public service endorsement

1779 Revolutionary War letter written by Daniel Loring of Sudbury, Mass. to HonorableJohn Nixon. Daniel Loring was a resident of Sudbury, and writes to Nixon as a friend. He thanks Nixon for his favors to Loring's family. He also comments on the present war" The air is full of news this way from the Southerd, and North River (Hudson river)...therefore no person can tell what to believe, one day defeated, the next day all victory. No news from this quarter...however I may inform you that every necessary of life is about three times as dear as when your honor left this quarter. People suffering here can not get the necessities of life, because they can not get enough for them, Indian corn will not do at $35.00 a bushel because they can have 45 or 50 dollars per bushel at Boston, and they are obliged to go to Boston. It does not cost much to carry it down, therefore I will carry it although my neighbor starves- this I have been informed is the case in this town. Indeed I have reason to believe it- to dwell any longer on this would be needless and painful"Wonderful war period letter describing the hardships incurred during the Revolutionary War.
