London: printed for E. and C. Dilly; and W. Creech, Edinburgh,, 1779. On Poetry and Music, as they affect the mind; on Laughter, and Ludicrous Composition; on the Usefulness of Classical Learning. The third edition, corrected. Octavo. Contemporary calf, spine in compartments with gilt rules and raised bands, red morocco title label gilt, red speckled edges. Half-title, engraved frontispiece of Socrates dated 1780. Splitting to front joint and the rear joint starting at the head, headcap chipped, rubbing to extremities, a few minor marks and scratches to calf, slight damp stain to the fore-corner of frontispiece and a few early leaves, still a very good copy in unrestored original state. Presentation copy of the third edition, inscribed to the author's friend Sir William Forbes of Pitsligo, "Sir William Forbes from the author" on the first blank verso (and additionally inscribed to the same effect, but in a different and possibly later hand, on the front free endpaper), with Forbes's armorial bookplate to the front pastedown. James Beattie (1735-1803) was a significant figure of the Scottish Enlightenment, holding the chair of Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Aberdeen from 1760. In his philosophical works (such as An Essay on the Nature and Immutability of Truth, 1770, and Elements of Moral Science, 1790) he argued influentially for the idea of a "Common Sense" to counter the epistemological scepticism inculcated by Hume, and also against the institution of slavery. He was in addition well known for his poetry, in particular for The Minstrel (1771-4), which inspired the Wordsworth and the other Romantics. These three Essays were first published in 1773 (alongside a reissue of his 1770 Essay On the Nature and Immutability of Truth). Sir William Forbes, 6th Baronet Pitsligo (1739-1806) was a prominent Scottish banker, philanthropist, and writer, and long-time friend of James Beattie. Forbes was the dedicatee of a number of Beattie's works, and would become the author of Beattie's biography, published in 1806 as "An Account of the Life and Writings of James Beattie". He was also a friend of James Boswell (described in the Tour of the Hebrides as "a man of whom too much good cannot be said") and through him became a member of Samuel Johnson's literary dining club. Inscribed copies of Beattie's works are uncommon, and this is an excellent association.

Paul Jones Shooting a Sailor who had attempted to strike his Colours in an Engagement

, 1779. 1779. BOWLES, Carington, engraver and publisher. COLLETT, John, artist. Paul Jones Shooting a Sailor who had attempted to strike his Colours in an Engagement. London: Carington Bowles, circa 1779. Broadside, image measures 13 by 18 inches, trimmed close to image; entire sheet measures 13 by 19 inches. $16,000.Stirring large hand-colored engraved print of the great American naval commander in action during his famous and heated engagement with the HMS Serapis, firing a pistol point-blank at a sailor attempting to strike the American flag, with two wounded men nearby; Jones is stepping on the body of a dead man, with his cutlass under his left arm and four pistols stuck in his belt. Engraved by Carington Bowles after a painting by John Collett. This image depicts, albeit exaggeratedly and falsely, an incident during the encounter of Jones' ship, the 42-gun Bonhomme Richard, with the British 50-gun HMS Serapis, when a shell-shocked gunner shouted for quarter till Jones knocked him down with the butt of a pistol, saying ""I may sink, but I'll be damned if I strike."" The British public feared Jones and saw him as little more than a pirate, thus this rather negative portrayal of the man known in the United States as the ""Father of the American Navy,"" trampling his own dead and wounded in order to shoot his chief gunner, Henry Gardner, in the face. This only happened in the propagandistic fantasies of the British, who hated Jones. This was also the encounter during which Jones (may have) famously declared ""I have not yet begun to fight!"" in reply to a British officer's taunt as the outgunned Bonhomme Richard circled and attempted to engage the Serapis at close quarters. ""Meanwhile, the surviving seamen of the 42-gun Bonhomme Richard must have thought their commander, Capt. John Paul Jones, had gone insane. Separated by two feet, the double deck HMS Serapis, a well-made and brand new British escort ship, was shooting 18-pound cannon balls into the 14-year-old single deck Bonhomme Richard; cannon balls that from 200 yards could shoot through four feet of oak. Near the battle's end, half the crewmates on each ship were dead, there were three or four inches of blood and guts on the high deck of Bonhomme Richard and both ships were on fire. Capt. Pearson, commander of Serapis assumed Bonhomme Richard would be the first to surrender. He asked Jones, 'Do you strike?' According to battle expert Peter Reaveley, Jones screamed out, 'No! I'll sink, but I'm damned if I'll strike!' The following quotation is more famously noted as Jones' retort: 'I have not yet begun to fight!' The battle established the Continental Navy as a powerful force and Capt. John Paul Jones as a hero"" (Joanna Romansic, ""NHC Joins Search for John Paul Jones' Ship,"" Oct. 20, 2005, dcmilitary.com.). This image first appeared as a ""color mezzotint"" measuring approximately 10 by 14 inches; the present copy is a somewhat later and larger copperplate engraving, boldly colored in light blue, dark blue, brown, beige, pale yellow and red. Trimmed to the edge of the image and legend. A few minor wormholes, some repairs and expert restoration to versos and margins. A very good copy of this sensational print.

Revolutionary War stampless folded letter 1779 Daniel Loring to General Nixon re hardships in Sudbury associated with the War. 1779 stampless folded letter with manuscript "on public service endorsement

1779 Revolutionary War letter written by Daniel Loring of Sudbury, Mass. to HonorableJohn Nixon. Daniel Loring was a resident of Sudbury, and writes to Nixon as a friend. He thanks Nixon for his favors to Loring's family. He also comments on the present war" The air is full of news this way from the Southerd, and North River (Hudson river)...therefore no person can tell what to believe, one day defeated, the next day all victory. No news from this quarter...however I may inform you that every necessary of life is about three times as dear as when your honor left this quarter. People suffering here can not get the necessities of life, because they can not get enough for them, Indian corn will not do at $35.00 a bushel because they can have 45 or 50 dollars per bushel at Boston, and they are obliged to go to Boston. It does not cost much to carry it down, therefore I will carry it although my neighbor starves- this I have been informed is the case in this town. Indeed I have reason to believe it- to dwell any longer on this would be needless and painful"Wonderful war period letter describing the hardships incurred during the Revolutionary War. The stampless folded letter has a manuscript " On Public service" used on military associated mail during the Revolutionary War. John Nixon (March 1, 1727 – March 24, 1815) was an American Brigadier General in the Continental army during the American revolutionary war.He was born in Framingham, Mass. .on March 1, 1727, to Christopher and Mary Nixon. He and his men fought at Bunker Hill on June 17, 1775, his unit was one of the last to leave the field. After the battle Nixon was promoted to colonel of the 6th Massachusetts Regiment Col. Nixon's regiment was placed into Gen. John Sullivan's brigade and took part in the New York and New Jersey campaign during 1776. In August 1776, Nixon was promoted to brigadier general, and he commanded a brigade consisting of the 3rd, 5th, 6th and 7th and 8th Massachusetts Regiments.         A Voyage to New Guinea, and the Moluccas, from Balambangan; including an Account of Magindano, Sooloo, and other Islands performed in the Tartar Galley, belonging to the Honourable East India Company, During the Years 1774, 1775, and 1776 to which is added, a Vocabulary of the Magindano Tongue.

London: printed by G. Scott; and sold by J. Robson; J. Donaldson; G. Robinson [in London]; and J. Bell, Edinburgh, 1779 - Quarto, (300 × 233mm). Ninteenth-century half calf, marbled paper sides, red morocco label, spine gilt in compartments, slightly rubbed, front joint repaired. Some surface wear to boards, extremities a little worn; two plates rather heavily browned, some light browning elsewhere, short closed tear to the margin of the map, but internally a good, clean copy. With engraved portrait after Sherwin, large folding map and 30 engraved plates and plans, 23 of them folding, many featuring coastal profiles accompanied by detailed charts. First edition. For some time, before entering the service of the East India Company, Forrest had served in the Royal Navy, seeing action in 1757 under George Pocock against the French in the Bay of Bengal. The year 1762 found him in command of a company ship, "from which he seems to date his experience when, writing in 1782, he spoke of himself as having been more than twenty years in 'the country trade'; and as having made fifteen voyages from Hindustan to the East, and four voyages from England to India" (ODNB). In 1770 he pioneered the settlement at Balembangan at the eastern tip of Borneo and from here set out in 1724 in a native prahu renamed the Tartar accompanied by two English officers and 18 Malays. "In this unlikely craft he pushed further east than any of his company predecessors, eventually reaching Geelvinks Bay on the north coast of New Guinea. There he found one of the few nutmeg forests not under the control of the Dutch. After exploring Gilolo Passage between New Guinea and the Moluccas, he sailed to Mindanao, where the Sultan gave him a free choice of locations for future British bases" (Howgego). On his return to Borneo he found that the Balembangan colony had been abandoned and so proceeded to the Malay Peninsula where, at Kedah, his two companions refused to proceed further bringing his odyssey to an end. "The voyage was one of examination and enquiry rather than of exploration, and the additions made to geographical knowledge were corrections of detail rather than startling discoveries, but the tact with which he conducted his intercourse with the natives, and the amount of work done in a small boat, deservedly won him credit as a navigator" (Hill). Hill 623; Howgego F60. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Splendid Letters Patent Signed 'H. Card[ina]lis Ep[iscop]us', (Cardinal York, 1725-1807, Archbishop, last Stuart claimant to the throne of Great Britain as Henry IX, 2nd son of James III, the Old Pretender, brother of Bonnie Prince Charlie)

1779 - in Latin with transcription and translation, as "Bishop of Tusculum [Frascati], Cardinal Duke of York, Vice-Chancellor of the Holy Roman Church, Archpriest of the Basilica in Rome of the Prince of the Apostles, Commendator of the Church of St Laurence in Damaso &c", testifying that "We, for the greater glory of Almighty God, and the veneration of His Saints, have examined the Holy Portions of the Bones of St. Paul the Apostle taken from authentic places, which We have reverently enclosed in a small Round Silver Casket securely closed on both sides in Crystal, tied with a red silk cord: and, sealed with our seal have granted it to [name left blank] with power to retain it themselves, to give it to others, or to display it for veneration by the Faithful in any Church, Oratory or Chapel", countersigned by his secretary Vincenzo Cavazzi, finely printed with engraved pictorial 'U' and manuscript additions in the hand of Henry's Chaplain, Giovanni Lando, with his signature at the foot, at the head are thefine engraved Stuart Arms of Great Britain differenced with a crescent, under a ducal crown and Cardinal's hat, 3" x 2¾", at the foot is a similar papered seal, 1 side large oblong folio (11" x 16") and conjugate leaf, Palace, Frascati, 12th April right hand half of papered seal indistinct, otherwise in fine condition Henry IX is in many ways the most likeable of the Stuarts. In 1939, George VI commissioned a tomb of red granite for his remains, his brother, and his father James III, bearing the royal Crown, underneath St Peter's. Very ancient tradition places St. Paul's burial at St. Paul Without the Walls in Rome, and indeed in 2009 fragments of bone recovered from the sarcophagus there were dated to the 1st or 2nd century A.D. Beginning in 1758, Henry's chaplain Giovanni Lando, was responsible for keeping Henry's official manuscript diary, now mostly in the British Library. With the neat stamp of the library of connoisseur and historian Pietro Zampieri of Vigonovo, near Venice, on the versos of both leaves. Zampieri himself owned a valued relic, the left arm of St. Vincent of Saragossa, martyred in 304. In 1104 the Bishop of Valencia had hoped to take the relic to the Holy Land, but he died at Bari and it fell into private hands. Zampieri restored it to Valencia Cathedral in 1970.

Good copy.We can not let Belloy as a great playwright despite the success of his plays, especially the incredible national and popular success of the Siege of Calais. Yet the value of this edition of the theater and the world of letters in the eighteenth is important. Every part of the author is indeed accompanied by many elements, prefaces, memoirs, letters, notes and research that explain not only the public reception, but also quarrels with the party of philosophers, support and disavowal of Voltaire. As a writer, trying to resurrect Belloy classical tragedy, his essay on the tragedy of public taste then reflected (Gluck had set to music Racine in his opera Iphigénie en Tauride) approached; classical tragedy became in the second half of the eighteenth nationalist literary model, yet contemporary style of the invention of a new theater, the Diderot. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.         Essai sur l'Isle d'Otahiti, située dans la Mer du Sud, et sur l'esprit et les moeurs de ses habitants.

Avignon and Paris: Froulle, 1779. Octavo, with an engraved frontispiece view of Tahiti; a fine copy in contemporary speckled half calf, orange spine label chipped. First edition: the very scarce and earliest separate serious work on Tahiti (predated only by the Omai-based fictions and the poetical satires on Joseph Banks); it is based for its facts on the reports of Wallis, Bougainville and Cook, and for its philosophy on Montesquieu and Rousseau. 'Taitbout's pamphlet is of interest, not for the originality of its ideas, but because it reveals how notions of geographical control deriving from Montesquieu and applied by the Forsters to the islanders of the Pacific, could provide a rational explanation for the soft primitivism with which Bougainville, Hawkesworth, Banks, Diderot, and others, had endowed the peoples of the Society Islands, and add point and fire to a revolutionary pamphlet... ' (Bernard Smith, European vision and the South Pacific, 1985, p. 87).Tahiti was much discussed in Europe from the early 1770s, and various voyage accounts were in print during that decade. The Tahitian Aotourou had travelled back to Paris with Bougainville in 1769, while Omai had reached London with Cook in 1774. 'After its successive discoveries by Wallis, Bougainville, and Cook, Tahiti came to symbolize a living social and political experiment in the minds of many European philosophers: a primitive paradise that became spoiled and tainted by Western decadence. In this little work, often attributed to Bougainville - perhaps because it borrows extensively from his narrative and the earlier accounts of Cook and his accompanying naturalists, Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander - Taitbout speculates on the fundamental differences between the "homme sauvage" and the "homme civilizé," drawing from the example of Tahiti. He suggests that societies like Tahiti, that evolved in isolation, could offer political lessons to European nations, but acknowledges that the arrival of Europeans on their shores will deal them a death blow. Taitbout's purpose, in his own words (translated), is revolutionary: "to assist in bringing about the much-desired general revolution, to which the human spirit will one day owe the free, complete, and perfect union of all men"... ' (online resource at http://libweb5.princeton.edu/).Barbier notes that the book - published anonymously but now attributed to Taitbout - was in the past sometimes attributed to Bougainville. A German translation appeared in 1783.This copy has an additional work bound at the end, P.A. Caron de Beaumarchais, Le voeu de toutes les nations... dans l'abaissement et l'humiliation de la Grande-Bretagne, 1778 (Sabin 4178). Spine label chipped but in fine condition otherwise.

        [Captain James Cook].

London: J K Sherwin, circa 1779. Engraving, artist's proof copy 275 x 235 mm, mounted and framed. A proof impression (before title, date and some letters) of the first issue of the first separately published engraving of Captain Cook. This famous portrait of the great navigator was published in the year of his death, though news of the events at Kealakekua Bay did not reach Europe until the following year. Now the trademark image of Cook as a result of its very many subsequent versions (Beddie lists an astonishing 284 entries for the Dance group), it was considered the best likeness at the time and is known, for example, to have been distributed to friends by his widow Elizabeth. It is a conspicuously rare portrait in this first version. The engraving is based on Nathaniel Dance's original portrait, commissioned by Joseph Banks, for which Cook sat for Dance in 1776, before sailing on his third voyage. The painting is today in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. Dance, one of the greatest of British history painters and a founding member of the Royal Academy, shows Cook wearing captain's full-dress uniform and holding his own chart of the Southern Ocean: the caption "New Holland" can clearly be discerned in the engraving. This extremely rare proof was pulled before the image had been titled and dated, and before the usual pinxit and sculpsit notes had been added to the artists' names; this state corresponds with an example in the Mitchell Library (it is item 3 in an 18th-century connoisseur's album entitled "Three voyages round the world"), while a subsequent state with the addition of the title is held in the Dixson Library (Beddie 3379). An earlier less developed form where the shape of Cook's body has been simply blocked out is held by the National Library (Rex Nan Kivell Collection NK10914/A and /B).

A natural history of English song-birds, including such foreign birds as are usually brought over and esteemed for their singing: Their proper Management, Diseases, and Cures. To which are added, figures of the Cock, Hen, and Egg of each species, exactly copied from nature, by Mr. Eleazar Albin, and curiously engraven on copper. with several improvements, under the article of Canary-Birds.

London printed for T. Lowndes, No 77, in Fleet-Street, and S. Bladon, in Paternoster-Row, 1779 Small 8vo: [4],107,[3]pp, with a frontispiece and 23 further full-page copper-engraved plates, each showing the cock, hen, and (often) egg of a different songbird. Without the final leaf of advertisements. Recently rebound to period style by Fitterer in half calf, spine in six compartments between raised bands, black morocco lettering piece gilt, marbled boards, end papers renewed. A Fine copy, inside and out, the many plates in rich, dark impressions. ESTC Citation No. T62531. Zimmer, p. 3 (incorrectly identifying the format as 12mo). Lowndes 25. Fine ¶ Albin illustrated (and probably wrote) this book on English song birds, which first appeared in 1737; ESTC records seven editions, culminating with this "new edition corrected." Along with denizens of hedgerow and hillside, the author offered information on a domestic favorite in a lengthy section on canaries, here newly expanded, including advice on choosing a bird. Originally produced in a small edition, available in both a luxury colored issue and an issue with black-and-white plates, our later edition features mirror images of the plates from the second edition. It also claims to be the first such work to depict birds' eggs. Albin's opus, A Natural History of Birds (1731), was the first ornithological text to use colored plates, and made him one of the first successful compilers of profusely illustrated natural history books for the general reader. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

Briefe im Jahr 1772 nach Island angestellte Reise betreffen.

Upsala & Leipzig: Magnus Swederus, 1779. Octavo, large map and chart and eleven plates (most folding), 13 plates in total; contemporary quarter roan and marbled boards. First German edition, preceded only by the very rare Swedish edition of 1777, and followed by London and Paris editions in the 1780s. This study, a major work on the geography, history, and culture of Iceland, was written and edited by Uno von Troil, who sailed with Banks and Solander on the voyage to Iceland, undertaken after Banks' precipitate withdrawal from Cook's second voyage. Von Troil's work is the only major work undertaken by any member of the voyage, and naturally includes any number of references to Sir Joseph Banks and his retinue. As an interesting aside, in the 22nd letter, a discussion on the pillars of basalt, there is a particular discussion of the island of Staffa, which is noted as belonging to none other than "Lauchlan MacQuarie": father of Governor Macquarie. It is also interesting to note that this German edition does not include a lengthy letter from Banks relating to the island of Staffa (and apparently derived from Pennant's Tour of Scotland) which was later included in the English translation of von Troil's work in 1780.Despite its importance as a printed document directly relating to Banks - as, in effect, the only account of his alternative voyage - this significant edition is not known to be held in any Australian collection: indeed, any of the early editions appear to be very scarce.

[1779] First Dublin Edition, collated and complete in three volumes. First Issue, with "partaking his posterity" in line 3 of p. 4, repeated page numbers 143-144 in vol. I, title pages of vols. II and III without oval vignettes. The Lives of the English Poets originally appeared as "Prefaces, Biographical and Critical" to the ten-volume Works of the English Poets, 1779-81 (which itself eventually extended to 68 volumes). This is the first separate edition, pirated, preceding the London separate edition (which was titled 'The Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets; with Critical Observations on Their Works'). It includes two works by Gray, 'A Long Story' and 'Ode for Music,' absent from the later London edition. Courtney & Smith, p. 141; Fleeman 79.4LP/2a(i) and 79.4LP/6a. ESTC Citation No. T116665. Very GoodIn 1779, as Johnson turned 70, infirm and distressed by the deaths and illnesses of those close to him, he somehow managed a final literary project, which proved to be the "ultimate success in his career," according to the ODNB. "This took the form of a series of prefaces to a new collection of the English poets, best-known today as The Lives of the Poets. In a contract signed on 29 March 1777, Johnson had agreed . . . to supply 'a concise account' of some fifty poets . . . The first installment came out in March 1779, the second in 1780, and the third in May 1781. . . setting a new standard for English literary biography. . . . [H]is reading of mainstream poetry from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries remains canonical, by reason of its attention to verbal detail, its decisive judgments, and its robust expression."
