The Gentle Shepherd, A Pastoral Comedy.

Royal 4to., in contemporary full mottled calf, boards with elaborate gilt panels with corner tools, rebacked preserving original rich gilt spine, contrasting red leather label, all edges gilt. Aquatint portrait frontispiece and 12 aquatint plates engraved by David Allan, pp.18 of engraved music at rear. Corners rubbed, a little light browning to margins of plates, neat ink name dated 1848, generally a very good crisp copy. "Ramsay's play, The Gentle Shepherd first published in 1725, enjoyed massive success both in his lifetime and for several years after his death. This Scots pastoral drama is an entirely original creation, which develops the pastoral genre and fixes it within a Scottish context. Although the play belongs to the sentimental age, its value remains to this day: Ramsay presents his audience with skilful sections of lyric and song, and daringly attempts to revive the Scottish theatrical tradition under the strict codes of Calvinism. The Gentle Shepherd helps make possible John Home's Douglas, Fergusson's Scots pastorals and much of Burns's work." The Foulis Press first published The Gentle Shepherd in 1743, and they printed it again in 1745, 1747, 1750, and 1752, before issuing this handsomely printed and illustrated edition in 1788. David Allan who illustrated this edition was sometimes called the "Scottish Hogarth"

It does not forget the character was St. Foix, who served up to 36 years in the Musketeers in search of literary fame with its twenty rooms, with a rough and quarrelsome spirit. His two historical books are naturally important and significant. Paris trials are not a history of the capital, but an attempt to keep as close, through history the spirit of a people. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.

Remarks on Mr. Forster's Account of Captain Cook's last Voyage round the World, in the years 1772, 1773, 1774, and 1775.

London: J. Nourse, 1778. Octavo; a large and uncut copy in modern quarter calf. One of the scarcest of all the Cook publications and nowadays only very rarely seen on the market, this is a particularly interesting product of the second voyage. The account of the voyage by George Forster published in 1777 (A Voyage round the World in His Britannic Majesty's Sloop Resolution... ) had been a controversial affair: as Beaglehole describes the reaction, 'The Forster temper and the Forster recklessness being so prominently displayed in certain passages, it could hardly escape criticism. This was applied by Wales, 'our accurate and indefatigable astronomer', in an octavo pamphlet of 110 indignant pages... 'Wales frankly disbelieved that George had written the book, its prejudices were so much and so transparently those of Reinhold - in which his acumen as a literary critic certainly failed him. But he made some damaging points. Not only did he spring to the defence of the 'poor seamen' but he took a series of specific statements that outraged him and rebutted them with a vigour and heat that are still alive, far removed from the genial fun he had poked in the private pages of his journal... Apart from the controversy, he adds to our knowledge a little that is valuable in the annotation of Cook. George could not let this attack go unnoticed, and produced a quarto "Reply"... ' (Beaglehole, Journals, II, pp. cli-clii).This is a particularly large copy with its edges uncut; the ink correction on p.48 has been noted in all copies seen to date - it removes the words "and his son" from an accusation that Dr Forster lied about the existence of calabashes on Easter Island. It may all seem rather anodyne now but it was a terrific quarrel then. Some staining, marginal defects to a few leaves at the end made good with a dozen words on the last leaf supplied in facsimile.

Manuscript appointment for Georg Forster as Professor of Natural History at the Carolinum College of the University of Kassel.

Kassel: 15 December, 1778. Single sheet, 315 x 200 mm., watermarked 'Pro Patria'. A significant original manuscript document relating to the career of Georg Forster, confirming his first major appointment in Germany, to the Collegium Carolinum in Kassel, where he quickly established himself as the leading Pacific expert of his day.A naturalist on the second voyage of James Cook to the Pacific (1772-1785), Forster was still a teenager when they sailed, serving as an assistant to his father Johann. The two Forsters are now chiefly remembered for the controversies on their return; Johann, by most accounts, was not the easiest man to get along with, and was soon embroiled in controversy surrounding the publication of the official account of the voyage. In 1778, struggling for money himself, Georg left England to seek a university posting for his father in Germany; when he left England in October he carried a wealth of material derived from their time in the Pacific, including native artefacts and ethnological drawings, abundant botanical specimens and bundles of manuscript notes. Although his father encountered difficulty in selling Pacific artefacts in London, Georg was able to interest German institutions including the University of Göttingen, where a significant collection of artefacts from the second voyage of Captain Cook remains to this day.Georg certainly made an impression in Germany, and it is not surprising that while seeking employment for his father in the court of Frederick II, Landgraf of Hessen-Kassel, that he was soon offered a position. This original document confirms George Forster's appointment to the post of Professor of Natural History with a salary of 450 talents per year, and is signed by Frederick II. Georg stayed in the post from 1778 to 1784, and here met his future wife Therese Heyne. With a remnant of wax seal at the left hand margin, a few folds, some browning and little spotting yet good condition overall.

New Discoveries Concerning the World and its Inhabitants.

London: J. Johnson, 1778. Octavo, with two folding plates and two folding maps; old quarter pebblegrain cloth and marbled boards. First edition of this early compendium of information about Australia, New Zealand and the South Seas. The accounts of Cook's first two voyages are assembled from a variety of sources, including Hawkesworth, Parkinson, Forster and Cook himself. This gives a good overall picture of the voyages, while the material on the second voyage in particular, published during Cook's absence on the third voyage and before any news of his death, is of a good early date. The various discoveries in the South Seas, and especially those of Cook, are put into a context of particular significance for Australia, by comparison with the voyages of Mendana, Quiros, Tasman, Le Maire, Schouten, Dampier, Roggeveen and others. One of the engravings bears more than a passing resemblance to the celebrated Dufour panorama, the printed French wallpaper which illustrates Cook's and others' discoveries; in the plate here, a marvellous composite of people, places and animals discovered in the South Seas, we see a "Kangaroo" and a "Woman of New Holland", as well as "A Canoe of O-Taheitee" which, defying climate, is separated from Endeavour only by 'A Floating Ice-Island, numbers of which were seen towards the Southern Frigid Zone'. The Tahitian Chief Mourner enters at right. Spine and edges rubbed but a good copy.

[And:] Instructions for Officers Concerned in ascertaining the Duties upon Sope in the Country. 5 works bound together in 1 octavo volume (218 x 135 mm). Contemporary half calf and marbled boards, remains of paper label to spine, initial W. H. stamped in gilt on spine. Ownership inscription to the third title page Wm. H., Carlisle, Royal coat of arms printed on each title page; several tables included in the text, some engraved. Spine ends and corners worn, front free endpaper removed. First work lacks pages 7-8, second work with piece torn away from pages 17-18, with slight loss of text; occasional marking in pencil, a few pen trials to pastedowns; withal very good. A scarce series of publications for excise men and gaugers, all published in 1778, giving guidance and instruction on all matters involving the inspection of premises, calculation of duty payable, and how to maintain records. The production and distribution of these books of instruction appear to have begun in the early eighteenth century. As might be expected, the survival rate seems very small. Excise was first introduced in Great Britain in 1643, taking its example from Holland.

RECUEIL DES LOIX CONSTITUTIVES DES COLONIES ANGLOISES, CONFÉDÉRÉES SOUS LA DÉNOMINATION D'ÉTATS-UNIS DE L'AMÉRIQUE-SEPTENTRIONALE. AUQUEL ON A JOINT LES ACTES...DU CONGRÈS GENERAL, TRADUIT DE L'ANGLOIS...

En Suisse [i.e. Paris], 1778. [10],370pp. Half title. Modern three-quarter calf and marbled boards. Internally bright and crisp. Very good. The earliest collection of the constitutions of the constituent American states published in France, and the predecessor for the more generally known translation by the Duc de la Rochefoucauld of THE CONSTITUTIONS OF THE SEVERAL INDEPENDENT STATES OF AMERICA (Philadelphia, 1781 and Paris, 1783). This work was compiled by Régnier and dedicated via a letter (printed herein) to Benjamin Franklin, who ordered the publication of the 1783 collection. Included also is an exceptionally early appearance in book form, in French, of the Declaration of Independence. An important early gathering. Interestingly, this title appears under two false imprints: the imprint "A Philadelphie" and "En Suisse," the latter of which the present copy bears. The practice of using false imprints during pre-Revolutionary France was a common one, and is evidence of the flexibility in the government's relationship with the printing press - often giving the government the safety net of official denial, should any objections be raised in the face of a controversial publication. Though published in Paris, Switzerland, a country popularly conceived of as a bastion of non-Monarchical and therefore liberal, even inclusively representative government, would have provided plausible support for the books' counterfeit origin.         Veduta dell'Arco di Benevento nel Regno di Napoli

1778. " - PRIMO STATO DI QUATTRO - Acquaforte e bulino, 1778 circa, firmata in lastra in basso a sinistra. " - THE FIRST STATE OF FOUR - Etching and engraving, 1778, signed on plate at the lower left. Example from the contemporary Roman Edition. A very good impression, printed on contemporary laid paper with watermark ""double encircled fleur de lys with letters CB"", with margins, very good condition. The view of Benevento was made after the return from Paestum, 1778. So is one of the latest Piranesi's work and it's very rare to found it in the contemporary edition. Taken from Vedute di Roma; the whole work consists of 135 plates which have been individually produced by Piranesi along 30 years, from 1745 circa until his death. Two more works have been subsequently added, two plates by his son Francesco. They have been printed for the first time in 1751 (34 plates) by the editor Giovanni Bouchard, afterwards by Piranesi himself, publisher in Palazzo Tomati in Rome (as it is written on m,any plates), until the final edition of 137 plates. After Piranesi's death, his son Francesco inherited the plates, editing them first in Rome and then in Paris. The Calcografia Camerale, nowadays Calcografia Nazionale, has then bought the plates which are now kept inside the building." Hind 135 I/IV, Focillon 823. 720 475

[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] New edition Binders full mottled calf. back smooth decorated with two boxes to the grotesque, 2 florets and casters. parts of title in red morocco, and volume number in a medallion in red morocco. frieze framing on the boards. lower joint 3 open tome head; lack of Volume 4 in head and head of Volume 3 threadbare. Tail of Volume 6: cut and misses. Some scuffs on the boards. A notebook detached Volume 1. Most corners bumped. However, all pretty well decorated. Without doubt the most famous and the best work of the historian, on a subject of the most sought; This work was written at the request of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, eager to promote his chivalrous annals. Father Vertot met success with his first book, Madame de Sevigne and Bouhours flattered to his style, and this success everywhere never failed, thus the order of Jerusalem who sought his biographer called on him in his old age. The book was born in 1726 when the author was ill and declined. The work is by its imaginative and stylistic qualities, tempered by deeper research than in previous works of the author. x (2) 518pp. et (4) 411pp. et (4) 460pp. et (4) 440pp. et (4) 430pp. et (4) 480pp. et 444pp. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

FIRST EDITION, LAVOISIER'S OFFICIAL EASTER MEMOIR ON THE COMPOSITION OF AIR. In this work, Lavoisier proposed that ordinary air is composed of two different gases, one "highly respirable" (that he named "oxygen") and the other (later named nitrogen) that was unable to support combustion or respiration. This work is commonly referred to as Lavoisier's "Easter Memoir" because he presented an earlier version to the Academy around Easter of 1775; as this is the 1778 revised version, historians regard it as Lavoisier's "official" Easter Memoir (Wikipedia). In April, 1778, "Lavoisier read for a second time the memoir in which he had originally demonstrated, in April 1775, that mercury precipitate reduced without charcoal disengages not fixed air, but the 'air itself entire', or 'the purest portion of the air'. He made some revisions in the text that have attracted widespread attention from historians" (Holmes, Lavoisier, 137). In the time between 1775 and 1778, Lavoisier repeated some of performed some new experiments of his own and repeated some of Priestley's. In the 1778 'official' version, Lavoisier "altered the language in which he had described that air, calling it now 'the most salubrious, the most pure portion of the air', and air 'in an eminently respirable state'. Fastening on to this last phrase, he again referred to the air later in his memoir as 'eminently respirable air'. At the same time he deleted references to it in the original version as 'common air', and eliminated the experimental description that it reacted to the nitrous air test in the same manner as common air… "Historians have tended to treat with suspicion the textual changes Lavoisier made. The implication seems to be that he sought to represent himself as having clearly understood in 1775 that the air released from the mercury calx is a specific portion of the atmosphere when, in fact, he had then still not distinguished it unambiguously from ordinary air. If one couples this suspicion with acceptance of Priestley's charge that Lavoisier had obtained the idea for the experiment from him in the first place, then one creates an image of Lavoisier as one who is known to have had an 'occasional tendency to allow the work of others to pass as his own'. "There is, however, no solid evidence that in making these changes he was attempting to rewrite history… His motivation was probably [simple]. By the spring of 1778, when his new theoretical edifice had solidified, the experiments on mercury calx would have come to appear to him as one of the decisive experimental foundations on which he had erected it. Yet when he looked back on the paper which reported these experiments from the vantage point he had since attained, the descriptions of the air he had identified in it would have appeared confused, ambiguous, and inconsistent. "The embarrassment of allowing such flaws to remain, in what he could now anticipate might someday be regarded as a classic paper, is obvious. Since the paper had yet to appear in the Memoirs of the Academy, chronically two to three years late in publication, he had a convenient opportunity to avoid that outcome" (Holmes). ALSO INCLUDED: An important paper by P. S. Laplace introducing the concept of the "Coriolis effect" fifty years before Coriolis. Euler had also written about the effect in 1749. This is part one of a two part paper. CONDITION & DETAILS: Paris: De l'Imprimerie Royale. 4to (10.5 x 8.25). 11 folding engraved copperplates. Prior ownership name, 'Bernardi' on front free endpaper. Contemporary full leather binding. Front joint between spine and boards cracking but solid. Handsome wide margins throughout. Slight toning throughout, otherwise bright and very clean. Very good condition.

Fastening on to this last phrase, he again referred to the air later in his memoir as 'eminently respirable air'. At the same time he deleted references to it in the original version as 'common air', and eliminated the experimental description that it reacted to the nitrous air test in the same manner as common air? "Historians have tended to treat with suspicion the textual changes Lavoisier made. "There is, however, no solid evidence that in making these changes he was attempting to rewrite history? His motivation was probably [simple]. Nachdruckausgabe der deutschen, in Berlin 1778-80 bei Haude und Spener herausgekommenen Übersetzung der 1778 in London erschienenen Originalausgabe Observations made during a voyage round the world.
