The Lusiad; or, the Discovery of India. An Epic Poem. Translated from the Original Portugese of Luis de Camöens. The Second Edition

Oxford: Jackson and Lister, 1778. Quarto, contemporary tree calf, edges worn, rebacked, red morocco label, (2) + ccxxxvipp + 496pp, including the dedication to the Duke of Buccleuch, engraved frontispiece, folding engraved map. Goldsmith 11720. Viner, Guide to John Rae?s Life of Adam Smith pp.70-74. Not in Kress or Vanderblue.Second edition, but the first to contain this critical attack on Adam Smith?s laissez-faire doctrines to the East India Trade in the Wealth of Nations. The long criticism appears on pages clxi-clxxxvi and begins; "Of the example of Portugese Asia cannot be better enforced by an examination of the popular arguments relative to the British commerce with India. A recent Writer on the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations, has stood forth as the philosophical champion for the abolition of the Monopoly of the English United East India Company..."Mickle, a Scottish poet and translator of Camöens epic verse, dedicated The Lusiad to Adam Smith?s pupil the Duke of Buccleuch, who apparently said that it had not the merit it had been presented to him as having.Viner writes "Mickle?s criticism of Adam Smith?s economics was not limited to Smith?s specific applications of his general laissez-faire and free competition doctrines to the East India Company issue, but included a frontal attack on these doctrines themselves...It was not Smith?s custom publicly to acknowledge, still less, formally to reply to, or to make explicit concessions to, adverse criticism of himself or his writings, and he seems never publicly to have referred to Mickle. Although in the third edition (1784) of The Wealth of Nations he introduced new material on the East India Company and its history which was on the whole even more critical than his original attack on the Company..."

Part I of our book preceded the dictionary in Volume I, and was also published separately in 1777. The ODNB describes it as "a long, intellectually ambitious and highly polemical (work). Those who tried to write the history of Eastern peoples without using Eastern sources were particular objects of his disdain. One of those thus attacked, Jacob Bryant, retaliated in An Apology to Richardson, to which Richardson replied in a second edition of his ‘Dissertation". Part II which is only in the second edition enlarges the work by some 200 pages. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE. FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST.

POEMS SUPPOSED TO HAVE BEEN WRITTEN AT BRISTOL BY THOMAS ROWLEY AND OTHERS IN THE 15TH CENTURY. [with] APPENDIX . . . TENDING TO PROVE, THAT THEY WERE WRITTEN . . . ENTIRELY BY THOMAS CHATTERTON

London: Printed for T. Payne and Son, 1778. Third Edition of the poems; First Edition with the Appendix . Hardcover. 225 x 130 mm (8 7/8 x 5 1/8"). 1 p.l. (title), xxvii, [i], 333, [1] pp. Edited and with appendix by Thomas Tyrwhitt. Third Edition of the poems; First Edition with the Appendix. PLEASING CONTEMPORARY RED STRAIGHT-GRAIN MOROCCO, covers with gilt rule border, flat spine divided into compartments by plain and decorative gilt rules and containing central gilt urn and circlet cornerpieces, turn-ins with Greek key roll, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. One engraved facsimile plate. Lowndes III, 2139. Binding a but dulled and soiled, lower corners rather worn, a hint of browning and minor foxing throughout (slightly more prominent in half a dozen gatherings), one leaf with a thin darkened strip at fore margin edge (and with a small chip in the same place), other slight defects; not without issues, but still an appealing copy, neither the elegant original binding nor the text with any serious condition problems. The most precocious of English poets and the heroic martyr of the Romantic Age, Thomas Chatterton (1752-70) became famous for fabricating a number of poems said to be by a fictitious monk named Thomas Rowley. Chatterton, who from his youngest years was absorbed by the antiquities of his native Bristol, supplied Rowley from his imagination as the confessor and gifted poet to Willliam Canynge, the famous mayor of Bristol in the early 15th century. First printed the year before our edition, these Rowley poems appeared after Chatterton, faced with great poverty and disappointment in his attempt to launch a literary career, died from an overdose of laudanum. The fraud succeeded until well after Chatterton's death, and even when it was revealed, the works of "Rowley" were recognized as manifesting an impressive poetic genius. In the Appendix, literary editor and critic Thomas Tyrwhitt (1730-86) sets forth his "observations upon the language of these poems" that belied their attribution to a 15th century author. According to the DNB, Tyrwhitt's "intimate knowledge of the language of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries also led to his being acknowledged by contemporaries as the only real authority among those involved in the Rowley controversy.".

Much of his practice consisted of copies and mezzotints of works by English School artists from the 18th century to his own time (online Dictionary of Scottish Architects). The subscribers' list contains the names of numerous notable figures: architects, builders, painters (many R.A.), craftsmen of all sorts (cabinet makers, goldsmiths, coach builders etc) including Thomas Gainsborough, Sir Joshua Reynolds, Paul Sandby, George Stubbs, Matthew Boulton and David Garrick. Thomas Malton (1748 – 1804), was an English painter of topographical and architectural views, and an engraver. J. M. W. Turner and Thomas Girtin were amongst his pupils. See Colvin page 375.         Domestic Medicine; or, The Family Physician: Being an Attempt to Render the Medical Art More Generally Useful, by Shewing People What is in Their Own Power Both with Respect to the Prevention and Cure of Diseases. . . .

Printed by John Trumbull for Robert Hodge, Norwich 1778 - Original leather with five raised bands on the spine; minor wear, mostly at spine ends. Sound binding, slightly sprung. Intact intact hinges. Pages clean and toned with some foxing. Wear to both free endpapers. Owner's name on rear endpaper. As described in Heirs of Hippocrates 625, "Buchan first published Domestic medicine at Edinburgh in 1769. It had an enormous circulation, no fewer than nineteen editions being published during the author's lifetime. . . . Buchan gives simple and easily followed advice in this book and deals at considerable length with various matters that may affect the health, such as diet, ventilation, sleep, cleanliness, and infection. The greater part of the treatise is taken up with a description of the causes, management, and treatment of diseases, such as fevers, pneumonia, smallpox, whooping cough, and colic. His remarks . . . give valuable insight into the relationship between social conditions and disease in the eighteenth century." See also Guerra a-621. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[AUTOGRAPH DOCUMENT, SIGNED BY GENERAL HORATIO GATES, TRANSMITTING ORDERS AND INSTRUCTIONS TO BRIGADIER GENERAL JOHN PATERSON]

Danbury, Ct. Oct. 20, 1778.. [2]pp. on a quarto sheet. Inlaid in a later paper sheet. Discreet tissue repair at edge. Old fold lines. Very good. In a blue half morocco and cloth clamshell case, spine gilt. Orders written and signed by American general Horatio Gates, the victor of Saratoga, commanding Brigadier General John Paterson to march his brigade from Danbury to Hartford, where he is to await further orders. Gates provides detailed instructions as to the route Paterson should follow; he also prescribes the route that should be taken if Paterson's further orders send him to Boston. He writes: "As you will not be hurried in your march, the strictest discipline is recommended, sending your commissaries, & quarter masters, forward, to make provisions of fire wood, particularly, to prevent the burning the fences of the inhabitants. Your own experience renders it unnecessary for me to add more." Horatio Gates (ca. 1727-1806) was a British- born army officer who served with Gen. Braddock during the French and Indian War. He was part of the ill-fated Braddock Expedition (along with George Washington) to capture Fort Duquesne in and retake the Ohio Valley in 1755. When the Revolutionary War broke out, Gates offered his services to Washington, and was in command of the Northern Department at the Battle of Saratoga in 1777, an important victory for the Continental Army. His signature is scarce.

KRITIEKE VERTOONING VAN DE TOONEELSPELERS VAN DOCTOR SCHASZ [caption title]

[Holland. ca. 1778].. Broadside, engraved folio leaf affixed to folio text leaf, approximately 17 1/2 x 17 inches total. Plate size: 8 x 12 inches. In Dutch. Light wear, small dampstain in right margin, not affecting image. Else a near fine copy, untrimmed. A rare, illustrated Dutch allegory on the political situation between Britain, the European powers, and America, presumably during the American Revolution. "Dr. Schasz" was the playwrighting pseudonym of the Dutch journalist, patriot, and political writer, Pieter 't Hoen (1745-1828). If this "Critical Show of the Stage-Actors of Dr. Schasz" refers to a particular play, it may be to part of the trilogy Hoen wrote on the subject of the American Revolution in the 1778: HET ENGELSCHE EN AMERICAANSCHE KAARTSPEL, DE GEPLAAGDE HOLLANDER..., and DE MISREKENING. In the large and detailed engraving, a cast of ten characters, each numbered for the explanatory key in the text below, occupies a colonial landscape, marked in the background with cannons being fired from a coastal fortress. The characters include a Mr. Brodding, looking "with downcast eyes upon the sealed papers"; William Griff, who "wails about the empty subsidy pockets and the broken teapots"; "Goodheart" ("dressed as a sailor in underwear"); "Oecnomicus"; Mercator; "Patriot"; Don Lopes and Don Aylva; Jean Prener; Dr. Schasz himself; and "the Wildman (on the other side)," who "always continues to gather his wares and to ship them while he shoot from his fortresses and his batteries, to show that he is at home." Jean Prener, with the aid of a felt board and animal pictures, is showing Dr. Shasz "the known fable of the Lion, the Bear, the Monkey, and the Fox," which is explained at length in a footnote. The fable suggests that the cleverness of Holland in its diplomacy with England during the first part of the American Revolution has spared it from British aggression. This would suggest the allegory was printed before 1780, when Britain declared war on the Dutch to prevent it from joining the League of Armed Neutrality. The broadside is apparently not listed in M.D. George's exhaustive CATALOGUE OF POLITICAL AND PERSONAL SATIRES and has not been located in any other reference or known institutional collection. Very rare.
