RICHARDSON Samuel
- S.n., à Amsterdam 1777, 8 tomes en 4 Vol. in 12 (16,5x9,5), relié. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] New edition. Full glossy marbled calf, spine decorated nerves. A hitch a cap joints. Translated by the Abbe Prevost. India UNIQUE INDIAN WATERCOLOR FROM THE HIGHLY IMPORTANT IMPEY COLLECTION Pencil, pen and ink and watercolor with gum arabic, heightened with bodycolor Paper size: 18 1/8" x 26 1/2" Frame size: 28 1/2" x 37" Inscribed: Fine Ear/ In the Collection of Lady Impey in Calcutta/ Painted by [Shaikh Zayn-al-Din] Native of Patna 1777 (lower left) and further inscribed in Urdu and Persian (lower left) and numbered 20 (upper left) Provenance: Sir Elijah and Lady Impey During the years that Sir Elijah Impey (1732-1809) and his wife Mary spent in India, they commissioned a unique and highly important collection of original Indian artwork. In 1774, Sir Elijah was appointed the first Chief Justice in Bengal, as a result of the new Regulating Act which required the establishment of law courts in Calcutta. While he set about collecting Indian and Persian manuscripts and miniatures, his wife Mary, bound to the home by family duties and frequent childbirth, established a menagerie in the grounds of their Calcutta house. Recognizing a profound level of talent in several Indian artists, she employed at least three to paint the striking, exotic flora and fauna in her garden. Foremost among these artists were Shaikh Zayn-al-Din (fl. 1777-1782) and Ram Das (fl. 1777-1782). Both artists were trained in the Mughal tradition of the Persian court painters, and their work demonstrates outstanding talent for capturing detail and color. . Book.

ADAM, After Robert (1728-1792) and James ADAM (d.1794)
London: 1777. Copper engraving. Engraved by T. Morris. In excellent condition with the exception of a small area of foxing in the sheet.17 1/4 x 23 5/8 inches. 19 1/4 x 26 1/4 inches. An elegant engraving of the elaborate ceiling in the music room of Sir Watkin Williams Wynn's celebrated house in St. James' Square, London. Robert and his brother James Adam forever changed the face of British architecture by introducing innovative Classical design ideas. From 1754-57, Robert lived in Italy where he had a long productive friendship with Piranesi, which was inspirational for both men. Adam's first book, on Diocletian's palace in Dalmatia, is clearly very like the archaeological investigations Piranesi was making at the same time of similar ruins. Piranesi's friendship and passion for Roman Classicism were seminal influences on Adam, and the greatest single factor, other than his own talent, in the work Adam produced on his return to England. Upon his return, the brothers launched their career by building the Adelphi from the Thames to the Strand in London, which although not a commercial success at the time, included one of London's most cherished buildings, the Adlephi Theatre. Together, the Adam brothers designed and built some of the most famous buildings in England, including such bastions of English architecture as Kenwood House, Keddlestone Manor, and Syon House. To the interiors of their English country houses, the Adams brought wonderful ornamental elements in niches, lunettes, festoons and reliefs. ADAM, After Robert (1728-1792) and James ADAM (d.1794)
London, 1777. Engraving by J. Zucchi. In excellent condition. An elegant engraving depicting two chimneys in Lord Derby's celebrated house in Grosvenor Square, London. To the interiors of their English country houses, the Adams brought wonderful ornamental elements in niches, lunettes, festoons and reliefs. Their classically designed buildings were so numerous in London that they changed the prevailing feel of the city and established their brand of neo-Classicism as the model of elegance and importance. FORSTER, [Johann] Georg [Adam] [1754-1794].
London: Printed for B.White, J.Robson, P.Elmsly, and G.Robinson, 1777. 2 Volumes. 4to. pp. xviii, [2], 602; 2 p.l., 607. without the errata leaf at the end of Vol. I. folding engraved map (frontis.). An attractive set in contemporary sprinkled calf, neatly rebacked, corners renewed, spines tooled in gilt (Vol. I title-leaf professionally remargined at lower edge & upper outer corner with small repair, marginal repair to GG2-3 affecting part of headline, occasional spotting). First Edition of this important account of Cook s second voyage, which preceded the publication of the official record by some six weeks. The author and his father, Johann Reinhold, served as naturalists on the expedition. While the elder Forster was originally to have written the account, he was forbidden to do so because of a dispute with the Admiralty concerning his emoluments. It is based on his journal and also draws from Cook s own although no acknowledgement is given. Humboldt said that he was indebted to this work more so than to any other for his early love of nature and tropical beauty. On his second, and historically most important voyage, Cook determined that the Terra Australis Incognita , which supposedly lay between New Zealand and South America did not exist, and accomplished the first crossing of the Antarctic Circle. Cook revisited New Zealand, and discovered, or re-explored and charted many of the islands in the Pacific, including Easter Island, the Marquesas, Tahita and the Society Islands, the Tonga Islands, the New Hebrides, and New Caledonia. A vast amount of scientific and ethnog … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

BONNET, Louis Marin after Jean Baptiste LE PRINCE
London: F. Vivares in great Newport Street, 1777. Colour-printed mixed method engraving. Printed on laid paper. In excellent condition with the exception of being trimmed within the platemark. Small tear in lower left corner, and another small tear on bottom margin. Image size: 10 9/16 x 8 1/4 inches. A lovely impression of this famous print by Louis-Marin Bonnet, one of the most celebrated masters of French colour-printing. The son of a Parisian stocking manufacturer, Louis-Marin Bonnet (1736-1793) trained with the engravers Louis-Claude LeGrand and Jean-Charles François, the latter the inventor of the chalk-manner technique of printmaking. Throughout his career Bonnet developed Francois's printing technique producing some of the most beautiful prints of the period. Bonnet's chalk-manner prints became immensely popular with collectors seeking images that imitated the subtle effects of drawing, but he also experimented with various forms of colour printing as seen in this charming print of a young lady playing the guitar. During the late 1770s and 1780s, Bonnet's success as a color printmaker was unrivaled and hence he counted among his patrons the wealthiest Parisian collectors of the time. This spectacular print exemplifies the single plate colour printing technique developed in England, but quickly adopted by French engravers. The effect is achieved by inking a single plate with several different colours by using a rag stump, this process is known as a la poupée. These English colour prints became very popular in Paris and threatened to affect the market f … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

Small 8vo, 180 x 125 mms., pp. 332 [333 - 334 Contents]; vii [viii blank], 345 [346 blank], viii, 360, engraved frontispiece and engraved title-page in volumes 1 and 2, engraved tail-piece in volume 1, folding engraved plan of The Leasowes at page 287 in volume 2, attractively bound in contemporary lightly mottled calf, gilt border roll on covers, spine ornately gilt to a bird and cup balanced on urn motif, represent in three separate panels on each spine, red and olive morocco labels; bookplate crudely removed from front paste-down end-paper of each volume, front joint volume 1 slightly cracked, top of spine volume 1 very slightly chipped, upper rear joint volume 2 very slightly chipped, but generally a fine and attractive set, with ornaments that resemble those used by Scott of Edinburgh, with the contemporary autograph of F or T Pope on the top margin of each title-page. Shenstone (1714 - 1763) is little read, or likely to be read, these days, but Samuel Johnson had some praise for some of his poems, concluding his remarks in The Lives of the Poets, by saying, "The general recommendation of Shenstone is easiness and simplicity; his general defect is want of comprehension and variety. Had his mind been better stored with knowledge, whether he could have been great, I know not; he could certainly have been agreeable." [Attributes: Hard Cover]

G.B. Piranesi
1777. John Wilton-Ely plate 46The watermark is a fleur-di-lis but is precisely which one is unknown due to the heavy inkThis plate is from the series "Opere Varie"Giovanni Battista Piranesi was one of the leading figures in the development of the neoclassical style in the late 18th Century. As architect, archaeologist, artist, designer, collector, and antiquities dealer, he produced a series of etchings and engravings depicting the glories of ancient Rome. These fine prints served as source material for other architects and designers. He was born in Venice on the 4th October 1720. The son of a stone-mason, he was educated as an architect under his maternal uncle Matto Lucchesi and under Carlo Zucchi. In 1740 Piranesi left Venice for Rome, there he studied etching under Giuseppe Vasi. He appears to have had little success in these early years in Rome and as his father was unable to continue his allowance returned to Venice in 1744. He was soon, however, encouraged to return to Rome by Giuseppe Wagner, a successful engraver and publisher of Venice. This time he achieved success, and a constant series of works, illustrating architecture and antiquities, issued from his studio until his death in 1778. His output in etched plates is enormous (about 1000 numbers in all). While he achieved a work of magnitude in pictorial records of Roman monuments of antiquity and of the Renaissance, and gave immense archæological, antiquarian, and topographical value to this work, the artistic quality always predominates. He was fond of peopling his ruins with Callot-like figures, and "like Call … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

Ur Ericsbergs bibliotek. Bibl. danica III, sp. 32. Fiske 606. Warmholtz 2601 not.

GESSNER, Salomon.
Zurich, for the author, 1777. With 2 engr. titles with a small etched vignette, 20 etched plates, and 39 etched vignettes in the text, all by Salomon Gessner. 191 pp.; 194 pp. 4to. Contemp. half calf, with 2 spine labels, spines gilt (repaired, slightly rubbed). Zurich, for the author, 1777-78. Only German quarto edition of the works of Salomon Gessner (1730-1788), only few copies printed. It is considered the finest of all editions, and one of the best illustrated works produced in Switzerland, comparable to the edition of Marguérite de Navarre's "Heptameron François" with the illustrations by Dunker and Freudenberger. Gessner himself was responsible for the illustrations, the ornaments and the printing. In this German version he included the pastoral play "Evander und Alcimna" and the poem "An den Wasserfall" which the French "Oeuvres" of 1777 did not contain; on the other hand, he omitted the "Contes" of Diderot which the French edition offered. There are four new illustrations as well, and three were left out. - A clean, wide-margined copy. - Leemann-van Elck, Salomon Gessner, p. 113 and no. 539; Maler und Dichter der Idylle Salomon Gessner, cat.
