For B. White, London, 1776. (viii), 136, 50 hand-coloured engraved plates. . HB. 4to, contemporary full leather, gilt border to both boards, corners neatly restored, rebacked in sympathetic style with raised bands, gilt tooling to compartments, red leather title-piece, original marbled endpapers retained. Some offsetting to plates. Provenance: From the library of Lytton Strachey (1880-1932), biographer, essayist, and member of the Bloomsbury group, with his small bookplate, designed by his lover and modernist painter, Dora Carrington (1893-1932). Following the death of Strachey (and of Carrington) the book passed to Ralph and Frances Partridge (whose names are written to the fly-leaf). Also with earlier bookplates of R.M. Trench Chiswell and Mary Constance Butler. First Edition. English and French titles together with brief letterpress descriptions in both languages, written principally by Thomas Pennant. Pennant had previously employed Brown for two of the plates in his British Zoology. 42 of the delicately coloured plates depict birds (sometimes together with insects), 5 mammals, 2 insects and 1 a reptile. Brown's plates for the present work were executed from animals that had not previously been drawn in the collections belonging to Marmaduke Tunstall and other private collectors, and from the collections of the British Museum and the Royal Society. However, some of the plates are copies from drawings which the former Dutch governor of Ceylon, Gideon Loten, commissioned during his stay in Java and Ceylon; these drawings were made from living models, chiefly by the native … [Click Below for Full Description]

BYRES John
1776. BYRES John - Plan of the Island of Bequia laid down by the actual survey under the Direction of the Honourable the Commissioners for the Sale of Lands in the Ceded Islands By John Byres Chief Surveyor 1776. I. Bayly Scupt London Engraved map with hand colouring 24.5 x 37" Very fine condition with couple of repairs in margin only. (MCS 16)This is the second state of two. Bequia, the northernmost of the Grenadines was one of the 'ceded' islands acquired by Britain through the Treat of Paris, 1763. The island is shown divided into 36 tracts, 17 claimed by owners, mostly French planters whose claims predated 1763 but with 19 identified as being unclaimed. This was one of four maps produced by Byres of the 'ceded' islands. It is arguably the most significant, as it is one of only three separately printed maps of Bequia, and by far the most detailed. Only a handful of copies of either editions of the map are found in institutions, and it rarely comes onto the market.

Contemporary speckled tan calf, rebacked to style with red and black morocco labels and richly gilt compartments, single gilt rule to covers. Ownership inscription to half titles, occasional light foxing, but a generally fresh, well margined copy. Frontispiece of the author after Joshua Reynolds (bound in vol. II along with table of contents for vol. I, both as issued). Two folding maps to vol. II, the second of which, "Parts of Asia and Europe adjacent to Constantinople" is bound untrimmed and folded (as issued and as opposed to being trimmed to the page size), and one folding map to vol. III. First editions (volume 1 in the first state) of Gibbon's magisterial history, with the cancel leaves and uncorrected errata as called for by Norton. The first variant state of volume 1 numbered 500 copies, printed before Strahan's optimistic and ultimately prophetic decision to double the printing order to 1,000; the first edition sold out within a fortnight. "This masterpiece of historical penetration and literary style has remained one of the ageless historical works which. maintain their hold upon the layman and continue to stimulate the scholar although they have been superseded in many, if not most, details by subsequent advances of research and changes in the climate of opinion. Gibbon brought a width of vision and a critical mastery of the available sources which have not been equalled to this day; and the result was clothed in an inimitable prose" (PMM). The Quaker poet John Scott (1730–1783) had a reasonably successful career as author, and this work led the Monthly Review to describe it as an "easy and melodious poem.[and] this elegant poem, " concluding rather confusingly, "We have spoken with better information of this performance because we know the different landscapes described, but we have not spoken in better terms of it because we know the Author; yet even had this been the case, whoever else knows him, would have held us almost excusable." The painter and artist George Keate produced a large body of work, and enjoyed a number of favorable reviews of his work: The Monthly Review gave Arcadia this endorsement: "There is a simplicity of interest, scenery, and character in this little Poem, which renders it truly Arcadian; and the classical air assumed by the Pastor … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Virgin of Guadalupe; Mexico].
12 august, 1776. México. Broadside in folio. Signed at foot, official wax seal, verso with manuscript annotation; a couple small wormholes touching a few letters.- The Virgin of Guadalupe or Our Lady of Guadalupe is today immediately associated with Mexico and Mexican Culture, the apparition of the Virgin to an Aztec convert to Christianity St. Juan Diego in the early stages of the Conquest of Mexico (1531) led to centuries of devotion and a singular iconography, undoubtedly today one of the most recognizable symbols of Mexico; in May 1754 the Papal Bull Non Est Equidem by Pope Benedict XIV declared Our Lady of Guadalupe Patroness of the territory of the Viceroyalty of New Spain (Mexico, Central America and today’s Texas, California, Arizona, Florida, etc.), promoted by Novo Hispanic authorities and the Society of Jesus. In this decree, the Archbishop of Mexico puts forward dates for festivities, masses and celebrations in honor of the Virgin (11 and 12 of December). This broadside, published in Mexico, is one of the pieces instrumental to the role the Virgin of Guadalupe had in forming a Mexican Identity. On the verso, a manuscript inscription reads: ‘Edicto del Illmo.Sor Do. Antonio Nunez de Haro para la festibidad de Nra, Sra, de Guadalupe Ano de 1776’. Institutionally we located copies at Brown, University of Iowa [perhaps microfilm?], and BNE.

Brown, Peter

WARREN, Edmund Thomas.
[London:] Longman and Broderip No. 26 Cheapside. [1776 & 1786]. Three works, oblong folio, engraved throughout pp. [4] 42; [4] 50; [4] 55 [1]; later cloth backed marbled boards, the second work inscribed 'W. Linley 1811' The Catch Club was a uniquely English musical and social phenomenon of the eighteenth century. The importance as a musical movement has until comparatively recently been quite ignored which together with a certain amount of nineteenth century prudery has meant that some of Warren's printed output could not be republished and was even deliberately destroyed. Thomas Warren (c.1730-1794) was both an English music collector and editor, he was secretary of the Noblemen's and Gentlemen's Catch Club from its foundation in 1761 until his death. 'He spent much of his life acquiring, copying and publishing music, both for the Catch Club and for his own benefit. He was responsible for the most complete collection of glees, canons, catches and madrigals published in the 18th century, which became known as 'Warren's Collection' and was a standard source of such music for many years. In addition to hundreds of contemporary pieces it contained a number of older works. The Apollonian Harmony, probably also compiled by Warren, contained many 16th-century madrigals.' (Grove) In each work the format included the four medal winning items intersperced with other compositions. In the Fifteenth Collection the prize winners were Samuel Webbe You Gave me your Heart, John Stafford Smith While fools their time is stormy G.B. Cirri Nos autem gloriaro and Earl Mornington The Maids Wish … [Click Below for Full Description]

Each Act has separate general titlepage; pagination and register are continuous. Slight shelf wear, occasional tanning, lacking one general titlepage and several blanks (see below). Very good. An impressive collection of the first twenty-eight acts (out of eighty-three total) passed in the second session of the fourteenth Parliament of Great Britain, some of which address the increasing instability in the American colonies. Most notable for the history of the early years of the American Revolution is the "Prohibitory Act," (Cap. V) which prohibited all British trade with the American colonies and removed them from royal protection. This followed and expanded on an Act from the previous year prohibiting trade with Boston alone; Britain effectively declared economic warfare on the colonies. This was addressed in Grievance 23 in the DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE: "He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us." In a letter to Horatio Gates, John Adams wrote: "It is a compleat Dismemberment of the British Empire. It throws thirteen Colonies out of the Royal Protection, levels all Distinctions and makes us independent in Spight of all our supplications and Entreaties. It may be fortunate that the Act of Independency should come from the British Parliament, rather than the American Congress: But it is very odd that Americans should hesitate at … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sir William Hamilton
Naples, 1776. This sensational engraving is from the first edition of William Hamilton's "Campi Phlegraei; Observations on the Volcanos of the two Sicilies as they have been communicated to the Royal Society of London . Observations sur les volcans des Deux Siciles.". The work was published in Naples for Pietro Fabris between 1776 and 1779. It is the area around Mount Vesuvius and Naples which had seen frequent violent eruptions. More people began visiting this area as the excavation of Pompeii and Herculaneum were performed at the funding of King Ferdinand I. The King frequented Hamilton's home due to this fascination and that it was filled with Hamilton's noted collection of art and antiquities. This peaked interest in volcanoes led to many travelers visiting his home, and it was noted that Hamilton himself climbed V … [Click Below for Full Description]
