Obligat. De Legat. Et Fideicommiss. Naples: Expensis Josephi de Lieto, 1776. Three volumes. Main text in parallel columns. Quarto (9-1/2" x 7-1/2"). Contemporary vellum, gilt-framed colored title panels to spines. Some rubbing and soiling and minor stains, corners lightly bumped, chips to head and center of spine of Volume II, minor worming to boards of Volumes I and III, a few endleaves lacking, some hinges cracked, a few cracks to text blocks. Large copperplate vignettes to title pages, that of Volume I printed in red and black. Moderate toning, occasional faint dampstaining and worming to margins, light foxing in a few places, internally clean. A solid copy of a scarce title. * Second and final edition. Much larger than the two-volume first edition (1719-20), also quarto-sized. This is an interesting commentary on the titles of the Digest on matrimony, credit, mortgages and commercial transactions. The editor of this edition is unknown. Aulisio was a professor of law at the University of Naples and an associate of Giambattista Vico. He was a prolific author on a variety of legal subjects. The second edition was reissued in 1783. Both editions and the reissue are scarce. OCLC locates 3 copies of the first edition in North America (Harvard Law School, Library of Congress, UC-Berkeley Law School). This edition not in the British Museum Catalogue. Moderate toning, faint dampspotting in places, moderate browning to title page. * Only edition (later reprinted in Dublin in 1790). A very important collection of reports heard before Lord Mansfield from 1772 to 1774. It is notable on several accounts, foremost being its unique coverage of the full proceedings in the case Somerset v. Stewart (1772). The first major legal victory for the British abolitionist movement, it established the fundamental illegality of slavery under the laws of England. Also included (retrospectively) is the case of Wilkes v. Wood (1763), in which John Wilkes won a precedent-setting suit involving in the illegal seizure of Wilkes's papers during Wilkes' prosecution for the publication of North Briton No. 45. Wallace, in an otherwise uncomplimentary review, concedes that Lofft's reports "embraced a portion of Lord Mansfield's judicial life not covered by any other reporter," an … [Click Below for Full Description]

EAST INDIA COMPANY].
London Printed by order of the House, 1776. Folio. 763 pp., contemporary tree calf, rebacked, corners worn, new labels, a very good example. The complete series of nine reports from the Committee of Secrecy appointed to enquire into the state of the East India Company. Ever since Clive assumed the Diwani, the Company had been living on credit. The scale of the problem became apparent in summer 1772, when, amid a general credit crisis, the Company found itself liable for over £1.5 million in bills of exchange alone. The directors suspended dividend payments and applied to the government for a £1 million loan. Stock values plummeted and the government, sensing another South Sea Bubble about to burst summoned Parliament. If it was a case of saving the nation's credit, it was also understood that, in return for the loan, the Company would have to pay in terms of its independence. With this in mind the Secrecy Committee met to hammer out the necessary legislative proposals, contained here, the first big step in state intervention. The reports of the Committee were first officially ordered to be printed in their entirety on 28 June 1773, when they were included in the collection of select committee reports known as the 'First series', i.e. 'Reports from Committees of the House of Commons, 1715-1801', of which they comprise vol. 4; vols. 1-4 were published in 1774-76; they were reprinted with 11 additional volumes and an index in 1803-1820 (Lambert, House of Commons sessional papers of the eighteenth century). DE L'ISLE (Joseph Nicholas) and Philippe Buache [Francois
See Detailed Description Below. Venice: Francois Santini, 1776. An engraved map, 29 x 20.5 inches (image size: 25 x 18 inches). A clean and attractive copy. Contemporary colouring in outline, and handsome colouring of the cartouche and decorative marginal figures. An early issue of this significant map, first issued in Paris in 1750 [possibly 1752]. There is no imprint at the lower right. This edition by Santini was issued in Venice for Francois Santini and Joseph Remondini's 1776 reissue of De L'Isle's Atlas Universel. Item #311158 ¶ A foundational map and the single most influential map of the the Pacific Northwest issued in the middle of the 18th Century. This map is notable for its depiction of the mythical "Sea of the West", which occupies much of Western Canada. This nonexistent ocean was created from accounts of Juan de Fuca's claims of discovery of the Strait of Anian (the Northwest Passage) in the late 1500's. This, combined with published accounts of Admiral Bartholomew de Fonte's discovery of an inland Sea in the region in 1708, led to the belief that a large inland sea existed in the West. De Fonte and his account are now assumed to be fictitious; still, the accounts seem to be (rather inaccurately) describing the Salish Sea, Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands of British Columbia.

1776. London: T. Cadell. 1776. 8vo, (6) + 128pp., wanting the half-title. Disbound, inserted into marbled wrappers, bookplate "Knoll Ex Libris". § Third edition printed in the same year as the first (and first American) edition. A pamphlet of considerable interest and importance: Reese notes "Price was a well-known British Presbyterian minister and the author of several notable books about moral philosophy and economics. He was particularly friendly with a number of Americans, and vigorously argued their part in the British debate over colonial taxation and government. This is one of the most influential political pamphlets written by an Englishman who sympathized with the American colonies. "It is said that the encouragement derived from this book had no inconsiderable share in determining the Americans to declare their independence" - DNB. [Watertown, Mass. Printed by Benjamin Edes, 1776] Imprint information supplied by Bristol. Broadside. 17 x 15 cm. Small closed tear, stain on left third of paper, some wear along an old fold line. Encapsulated. John Avery, whose name appears in type at the bottom of this broadside, was part of a group of Patriots called "The Loyal Nine" (the innermost circle of the Sons of Liberty, which also included Benjamin Edes, printer of the "Boston Gazette.") Avery served as Deputy Secretary under Samuel Adams in the Massachusetts Provincial Government, defeated Adams for Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. This broadside resolves to postpone and suspend the implementation of the Test Act, an act to require every male person over the age of 16 to swear loyalty to the Commonwealth. On this same day in Philadelphia the Declaration of Independence was being finalized. OCLC appears to list no copies, though it seems Library of Congress may have a copy. The Boston Committee of Correspondence used Edes and his partner John Gill's "Boston Gazette" and another newspaper [the "Massachusetts Spy"] to disseminate information to the rest of the colony vital to the Patriot cause. In April 1775, Edes fled Boston, spiriting away the printing press and type. GIBBON, EDWARD
London: Strahan and Cadell, 1776-1788. First editions of all six volumes of the most celebrated historical work in English literature. Gibbon s Decline and Fall covers the thirteen centuries from the age of Trajan to the fall of Constantinople with unmatched erudition, clarity, and organization. Gibbon brought a width of vision and a critical mastery of the available sources which have not been equaled to this day; and the result was clothed in an inimitable prose (PMM). Gibbon wrote that it was in Rome on October 15, 1764 while musing amidst the ruins of the Capitol, where the barefooted friars were singing vespers in the temple of Jupiter the idea of writing the decline and fall of the city first started into my mind. It was not until 1772, after his father s death and Gibbon s taking up independent lodging in London, that he began the masterpiece which would be twenty years in the making. Upon reading the manuscript for the first volume, Gibbon s publisher William Strahan doubled the printing order from 500 to 1000 copies. In his Memoirs Gibbon described the period of waiting before publication of the first volume: During this awful interval I was neither elated by the ambition of fame; nor depressed by the apprehension of contempt. My diligence and accuracy were attested by my own conscience. In a letter written shortly before his death, David Hume wrote to Gibbon praising the Decline and Fall but warning that it might not be well-received in England because Your Countrymen, for almost a whole Generation, have given themselves up to barbarism and absurd faction, and hav … [Click Below for Full Description]

A Londres, 1776.

[Click Below for Full Description]

Incisione in rame, bella coloritura a mano, in ottime condizioni. " Santini's map of the British & French Colonies in North America, based upon D'Anville's seminal map of 1746. The map provides a highy detailed treatment of Great Lakes and Mississippi Valley, on the eve of the American Revolution. The map shows numerous French forts throughout, along with substantial Indian detail, along with a massive Tecas and Louisiana.. One of the best large format maps of the region during the latter part of the 18th Century, based upon D'Anville's map of North America. The map extends to the west just past the Mississippi River. Several Native American tribes, rivers, and places noted west of the Mississippi, including ""Kansez."" Coryat, Thomas
London: W. Cater; Samuel Hayes; J. Wilkie; and E. Easton, 1776. Book. Good. Full-Leather. Reprint. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. three volumes. Volume one: unpaginated introductions, forewords, dedications etc, 304 pages, frontispiece, one plate, one woodcut; volume two: 484 pages, 5 plates; volume three: unpaginated, 1 plate, 5 woodcuts, index and list of plates. Original or temporary leather bindings, marbled endpapers, bookplates of William Twopenny, leather cracked on spines but covers attached except front cover of volume two, spine of volume one repaired. The book is an account of a journey undertaken, much of it on foot, in 1608 through France, Italy, Germany, and other European countries. Coryat (sometimes also spelled "Coryate" or "Coriat") conceived of the 1,975-mile (3,175 km) voyage to Venice and back in order to write the subsequent travelogue dedicated to Henry, Prince of Wales, at whose court he was regarded as somewhat of a buffoon and jester, rather than the wit and intellectual he considered himself. The extent to which Coryat invited such ridicule in pursuit of patronage and court favor is unclear. Among other things, Coryat's book introduced the use of the fork to England and, in its support of continental travel, helped to popularize the idea of the Grand Tour that rose in popularity later in the century. The book also included what is likely the earliest English rendering of the legend of William Tell. The work is particularly important to music historians for giving extraordinary details of the activities of the Venetian School, one of the most famous an … [Click Below for Full Description]
