Jahrhundert. A fresh and uncut copy of this large and rare 18th century map (covering the area between Lake Ontario, Montreal, Boston and Baltimore) in two sheets (not joined); giving good detail of the area between Lake Ontario, Montreal, Boston and Baltimore, printed from two plates, loose as issued, in fresh contemporary colouring, "Engraved and published by Matthew Albert Lotter, Augsburg 1777". The map was designed after the topographical observations of Sauthier and based on the Meridian of New York (=74 degrees W from Greenwich). C. J. Sauthier was a German surveyor from Strassburg who immigrated to Carolina. He is known especially as a surveyor in the employ of the Governor William Tryon of New York, a formerly British Major-General. Sauthier's first map of the Province, including surveys by Bernard Ratzer as well as his own, was published in 1776. The boundaries of the regions are clearly indicated by an engraved printed and coloured line, and elsewhere in the provinces, much place-name detail is given.

London: William Faden, 1777. Double-page engraved map and battle plan, period hand colouring. Sheet size: 30 x 21 inches. Rare Revolutionary war plan of the Battle of White Plains. The most accurate published delineation of the movements of the armies of Washington and Howe in Westchester published by Faden in February 1777 from drawings made by the British engineer Claude Joseph Sauthier who accompanied Howe on the October and November campaign. "Shows in detail movements and encampments of the British and American units from the north shore of Long Island north to the Croton River, south to Fort Washington on upper Manhattan, and west to Fort Lee New Jersey ... Many engraved notations describe maneuveurs and engagements" (Nebenzahl). Following the Battle of Long Island (August 1776), Washington retreated with the American forces into Manhattan and further north to White Plains. Howe pursued Washington, and this map shows the various landing places and camps of British and Hessian troops at Myers Point in Pelham, New Rochelle and Mamaroneck as well as the location of five war ships blocking the entrance to the Croton River. The map focusses largely on the 28 October Battle of White Plains and the subsequent retreat of the Americans to North Castle. On the west side of the Hudson, the map also shows the location of Cornwallis' camp after the taking of Fort Lee as late as November 18th. First edition, second state with the addition of five ships off Sarak Island (the Tartar, Phoenix, and Roebuck) and a dotted line charting their course. Spine ends and extremities professionally repaired, some discolouration through paper boards from leather, half-title backed, remnants of paper pasted to front free endpaper verso, a few nicks to fore edge of plate V, occasional spotting to contents (particularly to plate X), overall a bright copy. First Thorp edition, complete in one volume, considered "one of the best texts to use for anyone who wishes to make a careful study of Newton's Principia" by Cohen, and "extremely rare" by Gjertsen (p. 481; p. 577). In 1776 the Northumberland clergyman Robert Thorp (1737–1812) announced a two-volume translation of the Principia, but only the first volume ever appeared. It constitutes the first revision of Motte, accompanied by an extensive commentary, and Cohen argues it to be "notably improved and amended" (Gjertsen, p. 577) from Motte's edition of 1729.
