[Paine, Thomas]
[Philadelphia: Printed and Sold by Styner and Cist, 1777]. First edition, second state. pp. [2], 27-56. 1 vols. 8vo. The very rare third part of the series by Paine, written to boost the morale of American troops. The pamphlet is dated "Philadelphia, April 19, 1777" at the end of the text. The verso of the title-page prints proclamations by Gen. George Washington dated April 6 and 8, 1777, offering pardons to all army deserters who rejoin their corps before May 15, 1777. Paine thus wrote the pamphlet in mid-April 1777. In the text Paine predicts that Philadelphia will be a target of the British armies, as indeed it was that summer. "Britain, like a gamester nearly ruined, hath now put all her losses into one bet, and is playing a desperate game for the total. If she wins, she wins from ME my life; she wins the continent as the forfeited property of rebels; the right of taxing those that are left as reduced subjects; and the power of binding them as slaves." Paine goes on to argue that complete independence is the only path forward. The separate pamphlet editions of THE AMERICAN CRISIS, all of which are rare, were printed in various cities and towns, and all seem to be distinguished by having caption titles only. The older references, such as Evans and Howes, describe the Philadelphia printings of Parts I-III, but later findings by Edwin Wolf 2nd and R.W.G. Vail have uncovered other early editions of this historical American political work. See especially Wolf's explanation of the various Philadelphia editions of the first three parts of THE AMERICAN CRISIS printed by Styner … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

(American Revolution)
Hartford [CT]: June 28th 1777. 1 p., pen and ink on paper, dockteted on the verso and signed by "E[benezer] Plummer" and "Jonah Clark". 8 x 6.75 inches. SMALL COMPENSATION FOR A LIFE AND FORTUNE LOST. An important testament offering proof of the sacrifice and hardship of a memorialized Connecticut hero signed by one of its favorite sons, reading: "Sir pay to Hannah Douglas Executrise (sic) to the Estate of Col. William Douglas deceased the sum of Nine pounds Fifteen Shillings & onepenny (sic) money being for Extraordinary Trouble in obtaining pay for his Regt. from Headquarters Hartford June 28th 1777" William Douglas was born in Plainfield Connecticut on January 27, 1742, to John Douglas and Olive Spaulding. He married Hannah Mansfield in 1767, and they had four children. Douglas was a veteran of the French and Indian War and a prosperous mariner and merchant who had acquired substantial wealth trading in the West indies. He reentered military service at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, taking part in the expedition that took Fort Ticonderoga, as well as commanding a flotilla on Lake Champlain, and leading a successful raid on St. John. In 1776, he was elected to the Connecticut General Assembly, but declined in order to accept a commission as Colonel of the Connecticut State Regiment. The regiment joined Washington and the Continental Army in New York, where it was routed at Kip's Bay but redeemed itself the next day at the Battle of Harlem Heights, where Douglas reportedly had his horse shot out from under him and his uniform riddled with bullets. Forster and his father, the naturalist Johann Reinhold Forster, were both aboard the Resolution. The elder Forster was supposed to write the official account but when terms could not be agreed upon and the offer was withdrawn, the younger Forster issued this account based on his father's journals. [Thomas Chatterton]
T Payne, 1777. Condition: Good. With a page of publisher's advertisements. The second edition. Published the same year as the first edition. A scarce edition. Collated complete. Thomas Chatterton was an English poet who tragically killed himself at just seventeen. His work was extremely advanced in style, to such an extent that he was able to pass off his work as that of an imaginary fifteen century poet named Thomas Rowley. Chatterton claimed that he had discovered the works at St Mary Redcliffe in Bristol, close to where he grew up. 'Poems Supposed To Have Been Written At Bristol' was published posthumously, after editing by Chaucerian scholar Thomas Trywhitt who believed the works to be genuine. The works caused much controversy with much scholarly debate surrounding their authenticity. It took almost thirty years and much scholarly analysis before it was in fact confirmed the works were solely created by Chatterton. The work is an early example of a controversial and fascinating piece of eighteenth century literary debate. CONDITION Rebacked with speckled calf boards. Externally smart with slight rubbing to the extremities and boards. Marks to the boards. Hinges have been professionally reinforced. Ink inscription dated 1831 to front free endpaper and another dated 1963 to front pastedown. Slight offsetting to endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with the odd spot and marginal age toning. Slight chipping to front free endpaper. Overall Condition: Near Fine Please note that due to different condition ratings used by eBay Australia, the con … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

HOLBACH, Paul Henri Thiry
amsterdam: 1777. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "The most comprehensive description of materialism and atheism in the entire history of philosophy!" (Will Durant) Paul-Henri Holbach was an 18th-century French philosopher known for his atheistic views and theories of laws of nature. His most popular book was 'System of Nature', a work in which Holbach vehemently opposed and ridiculed formal religion and described the world in the terms of materialism. 'System' was polarizing in many ways and had an effect on many prominent literary and philosophical figures. Voltaire was known to have refuted 'System' and Frederick the Great even commented on the book because of Holbach's attacks on monarchial government.

HELVETIUS (Claude Adrien)
A Londres. 4 volumes. 8vo, 206 x 120 mms., pp. [iv], 484; [ii], xx, 513 [ 514 - 515 Approbation and Privilege, 516 blank]; xxviii, 586; xiv, 416, including half-title in each volume, attractively bound in full contemporary tree calf, gilt tooled borders on covers, spines richly gilt in compartments with oval sunburst motif, red and green morocco labels, marbled end-papers. A fine and attractive set, A bookplate loosely inserted in volume 4 claims "From Croom Court/ Roger Payne binder/ 1738 - 97 used a tool/ used in this binding." Helvetius (1715 - 1771) is probably best-known for his De l'Esprit (1758) and its successor De l'Homme (1772). Although the imprint claims London for the place of publication, it is clearly a French, and probably, Parisian printing. De l'Esprit had been condemned by the French parliament soon after it was published and was burnt, so Helvetius was clearly still considered dangerous to the structure of the state in 1777. The imprint is false, as the volumes were printed in Maastricht by Dufour and Roux. David Smith: Bibliography of the writings of Helvetius (2003), O.3. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

(PIOZZI, Gabriel Mario)
(ENGRAVED CONCERT TICKET) (PIOZZI, Gabriel Mario). FOR THE BENEFIT OF MR. PIOZZI, WILL BE A GRAND CONCERT OF VOCAL & INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC. (London): n.d., (circa 1777 to 1780). Etched and engraved ticket in red on heavy stock (3 1/8 x 4 3/4 inches). A rare eighteenth century engraved ticket not located anywhere else. Gabriel Mario Piozzi (1740-1809), Italian singer and composer, was the music and sing teacher of the daughter of Dr. Johnson's close friend, Mrs. Hester Thrale. T the consternation of Dr. Johnson, Fanny Burney, and other society friends, Piozzi, an Italian Catholic, became the second husband of Mrs. Thrale in 1784 The ticket was engraved by C. Barnes, Coventry Street, London, engraver of British and American bookplates. The date of this ticket has two possibilities. First, it could possibly be a ticket for the benefit for Mr. Piozzi held on April 18, 1777, as advertised i the Public Advertiser, #243, March, 1777. Piozzi advertised tickets availabl from himself at half a guinea each. Secondly, and more intriguingly, it is possible this was the benefit given for him by Mrs. Thrale in 1780. Mrs. Thr met Piozzi at a party at Dr. Burney's in 1777. On August 8 she wrote in her Thraliana, "Lady Shelley & I shall get him a pretty Benefit, & he will have t guineas from me besides, for teaching Hester to sing; his journey to Brighton will be a lucky one, he has lost some of his voice by relaxation-the Sea will restore it." Mrs. Thrale and Piozzi were married July 23, 1784.

Abu al-Fazl ibn Mubarak]; Francis Gladwin, translator
London William Richardson, 1777. First edition. 4to (25 x 19 cm), pp.[ii], iv, 81, [3]; with a portrait frontispiece, 1 folding printed table, and 4 engraved tables. With some text printed in naskh. A very good copy rebound in contemporary style calf, gilt filleting on boards, raised bands, spine decorated in gilt. Offsetting to title from frontispiece, small tear on folding table (not affecting text). A prospectus for Francis Gladwin's English translation of the Ain-i-Akbari, effectively a gazetteer of the Mughal empire under Akbar's rule. The text has, in Gladwin's words, "universally been considered an ornament of the age". Gladwin's prospectus provides both an example of his translation and more importantly the extensive critical notes he prepared for publication. Gladwin's translation was published in three quarto volumes at Calcutta (1786-1788). Intriguingly, his preface here refers to a collection of "drawings of the most remarkable men, animals, cities, fruits, and flowers, as well as representations of the principal ceremonies described": despite this, his Calcutta edition was unillustrated. The attractive frontispiece depicts the Emperor Akbar with a hawk perched upon his hand. The final two pages are a prospectus for a proposed vocabulary of Arabic, Persian, and Hindustani. The engraved plates include text in devanagari. Gladwin never published the vocabulary described. For the Calcutta edition, see Shaw 22, 30, & 61. [Attributes: First Edition]

GESSNER, SALOMON
Zurich: Chez l'auteur, 1777. First French Quarto Edition. This is a desirable copy of an important late 18th century French illustrated book, a happy marriage of fashionable poetry and beautiful engravings, in a binding that carefully imitates the Neoclassical designs and tools of master binder Christian Kalthoeber. Gessner (1730-88) was a painter and poet from Zurich, who hoped to renew the ancient genre of the eclogue. According to Britannica, he was "the most successful and typical representative of a literary rococo movement. His pastorals were translated into 20 languages, including Welsh, Latin, and Hebrew." He was also an equally talented artist, and the preface to this book is quick to note that all the etchings are of his own imagination and executed by his own hand. Gessner's close attention to detail and liberal use of dense crosshatching give each plate an intensity that is almost tactile, with the pale figures in high relief against the deeply etched, dark backgrounds. The binding is an excellent imitation of the work of German émigré binder Christian Kalthoeber, "considered during his day to be the finest binder in the world," according to Maggs Catalogue 966. One of Kalthoeber's most recognizable designs, used on at least seven bindings, employed a roll-tool border enclosing a central panel with garlands and pateras across the top, palmettes along the sides, and at the foot, two mermaids with curling tails flanking an urn. Examples of this can be seen in the sources cited above. Here, the mermaids are thicker and less refined in form, and the t … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

Francesco & Paolo SANTINI
Venezia, 1777. Fine example of the first state Santini's 6-sheet map of the Northern Part of the Ottoman Empire, centered on the Black Sea, published in Venice in 1779. The map was late reprinted by Giovanni Antonio Remondini. Santini's map is based upon Giovanni Rizzi-Zannoni's map of 1774. Rizzi-Zannoni's 3 sheet map of the Northern Ottoman Empire shows the Empire at the tail end of its centuries of control of Southeastern Europe. The map extends north and east to the Caspian Sea and Cossack Regions, and west to Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria, providing a fantastic geographical and topographical depiction of the region. Includes a fine decorative cartouche. The 6 sheet map was bound into the Atlas Universel. While there is some overlapping geography on the horizontal sheets, the sheets can be cut and joined to form a 6-sheet map approximately 60 inches wide and 34 inches tall. Copperplate with original outline colour, 6 sheet map, unjoined, with full margins, light waterstain in the lower white margins, otherwise very good condition. 1550 730mm
