Artist: Elwe Jan Barend ( - 1777 ) Amsterdam; issued in: Amsterdam; date: ca 1792. - technic: Copper print; colorit: original colored; - condition: Double fold due to the printing; - size (in cm): 51 x 59; - description : Map shows the peninsula Krim, Ukraine and the Black Sea with contiguous regions; - vita of the artist: Jan Barend Elwe ( 177 - 1815), was a Dutch publisher and book seller who reissued maps by De L¥Isle and Ottens and some other cartographers in the late 18th century. His famous map "Amerique Septentrionale Divisee en ses Principales Parties" was derived mainly from Sansonís and Jaillotís maps of 1656 and 1676. At this time, California was no longer shown as an island, but as a peninsular, and the Great Lakes to the north are enclosed, which was another feature often shown incorrectly on earlier maps of America. This map has been published in 1792 in an Atlas which included 37 other maps of different countries.

Rara "edizione originale", dedicata dall'A.

London: Henry Gregory, 1777. unbound. very good. Sea chart. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 20.5 x 33 inches, sheet measures 22.5 x 35.75 inches. Shows some light foxing. In very good condition. Striking sea chart based on a VOC manuscript map, fathoms, depths rocks and safe soundings are noted. Batavia was the name of the capital city of the Dutch East Indies that corresponds to the present day Central Jakarta. Henry Gregory (1744-1782) was a British mathematical and optical instrument maker. One of his azimuth compasses accompanied James Cook on his second voyage to the Pacific (1772-1775). The chart appeared as one of 46 in "A New Directory for the East Indies". This directory was designed for professional rather than popular use and valued in commercial as well as military navigation. As many of these maps were destroyed by the wear and tear of sea travel, this chart is an exceptional document of this active region, both yesterday and today.

Containing genuine Anecdotes, and a circumstantial Account of his Death and Funeral. To which is added, a certified Copy of his last Will and Testament. 2 works bound in one volume, octavo (151 × 91 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, rebacked, spine ruled gilt, red morocco label. Engraved frontispiece portrait to the first work. Corners worn, with loss of leather, some surface wear to covers, notably along the fore-edges, offset from the frontispiece onto the title, as usual; some light spotting and toning; still very good copies. First edition, second issue (with the misprint "himself" for "myself", line 3, p. 29), of the most endearing of autobiographies, bound with a related contemporary work. Hume was aware that, owing to his views on religious questions, the manner of his death would be a matter of public curiosity. So when, in My Own Life, he set out to describe his feelings as he approached his end, he was as much writing a manifesto for his philosophy as a piece of autobiography. It is generally agreed that the account is an authentic self-portrait of one whom his friend Adam Smith, whose letter to the publisher William Strahan recounting Hume's last days is printed at the end of the Life, described as approaching "as nearly to the idea of a perfectly wise and virtuous man, as perhaps the nature of human fraility will admit". Trials of pirate Captain Kidd, and New York colonial politician Nicholas Bayard, complete in itself. Captain William Kidd (c.1654 - 1701) was a Scottish sailor who was tried and executed for piracy, although some modern historians note that relegating him to the role of pirate and putting him on trial was a maneuver used by politicians of the day to deflect attention from their own questionable roles in privateering. Here Kidd testifies that he has French passes, which would have provided proof that he worked as a privateer and not a pirate: "I beg your Lordship's Patience till I can procure my Papers. I had a Couple of French Passes, which I must make use of in order to my Justification" (p287). Kidd was not allowed to retrieve his papers; he was found guilty on all charges (murder and piracy) and sentenced to death. (pp287-339). In 1910 at the British Public Records archives, the French passes were found that Captain Kidd claimed would prove his innocence. The second trial of note included here is that of Colonel Nicholas Bayard, p419-440. Bayard, the 16th mayor of New York City, was accused in 1702 of high treason before Chief Justice William Atwood, on the basis of a remonstrance signed by him and others, considered to be libelous. Bayard was sentenced to death, but after the death of the New York governor and the corrupt Chief Justice, the proceedings were annulled, and Bayard's property and name were cleared.&# … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

CARBURI, Marin.
Paris: Nyon and Stoupe, 1777. Folio (423 x 280 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, red morocco label, spine gilt in compartments, marbled endpapers, red edges. With 12 folding engraved plates, most double-page, by Sellier and d'Elvaux after Blarenberg. Armorial bookplate of Henry Tronchin. Skilful and unobtrusive repairs to joints and tips, final two plates with a couple of very light red paint marks, occasional variable light browning and offsetting, overall a pleasing copy of this handsome folio. First edition of this account of this remarkable feat of engineering. Charged with designing the bronze equestrian statue of the Russian emperor Peter the Great that remains a celebrated landmark of St Petersburg, the French sculptor Etienne Falconet decided that the traditional pedestal for equestrian statues would be too mundane. Only a massive rock would suffice. Eventually an enormous piece of granite was located in a marsh near the Gulf of Finland. The Thunder Stone, as it was dubbed, was estimated to be 40 feet long, 25 feet side, and 21 feet tall, and weighed some 1,800 tons: about 1,300 tons more than any of the obelisks moved by the ancient Egyptians or Romans. Most engineers declared its removal impossible, but Catherine the Great turned to Carburi, a Greek of dubious moral reputation who had b … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

VOLTA Alessandro (1745-1827)
GIUSEPPE MARELLI, 1777.
