      - Londres, Paul Elsmly [sic!], 1777. 8vo (20.7 x 12.5 cm). xv, 124, [iv] pp. 19th century full polished calf. Spine with five raised, gilt-bordered bands and red morocco label with gilt title. Gilt dentelles.l A rare treatise on precious stones and how to recognize them. The title page suggests that it was printed in London; however, the name of the publisher, Elmsley, is printed incorrectly, which makes this a bit doubtful. That having been said, "Louis Dutens (15 January 1730 - 23 May 1812) was a French writer born in Tours, of Protestant parents, who lived most of his life in Britain or in British service on the continent. He went to London, where his uncle was a jeweller" (Wikipedia). Sinkankas records a Paris edition - dated 1776 - as well, "said to be only about 3 x 5 inches", but also notes "Not seen. Apparently very rare". The present copy measures 21 x 12.5 cm, or slightly over 8 x 5 inches. Edges of the first and last few leaves browned, otherwise clean, unmarked. A very good copy. Sinkankas, p. 291. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Upsala & Leipzig: Magn. Swederus... zu finden bey S.L. Crusius, 1777. First edition of this extremely scarce and important book which contains the announcement of Scheele’s discovery of oxygen, made independently of, and two years prior to, Priestley. Scheele’s monumental discovery was made by 1773; he had begun his experiments on oxygen in 1770. The publication of this book was delayed due to the fact that Tobern Bergman was two years late in delivering his promised preface. The work is fittingly bound with Bergman’s own lectures on the nature and application of chemistry, a rare work that is not included in his collected works Opuscula Physica et Chemica.“The independent discovery of oxygen is here described and the composition of air by two gases is illustrated. One of these is necessary for combustion and respiration and it is absorbed by a number of solid substances and can be artificially produced; the second gas (nitrogen) prevents combustion. Scheele’s ‘fire-air’ (oxygen) could be produced from saltpetre, from black oxide of manganese, from oxide of mercury, etc. The photo-sensitive nature of chloride of silver was announced, a discovery that led to photography” (Dibner, Heralds of Science, 41). “Scheele (1742-1786) was an experimental genius; he made more discoveries of first-rate importance with fewer opportunities and scantier appliances than any one else, and his skill, insight and power of illuminating experimental results have never been surpassed, if indeed, they have ever been equaled” (Ferguson II.331).Bergman (1735-1784) was a member of the Swedish Academy and from 1767 professor of chemistry at Uppsala. He had a high regard for the younger Scheele and “did everything in his power to bring him to the notice of the scientific world. Bergman owed to him … his transition from obscurity to a leading position in the world of science.” (Partington, III, p. 208) His Essay on the General Usefulness of Chemistry and its Application to the Various Occasions of Life (thus the title of the English edition of 1783) gives “a general view [of] medical, oeconomical, and technical chemistry, halurgy, geurgy, theiurgy, salts, earths, inflammable substances, metals, waters and airs.” (Partington III, p. 184) Bergman remained a follower of the phlogiston theory all his life.OCLC: Scheele: Burndy, Chemical Heritage Foundation, Cornell, Madison, NLM, Smithsonian, Stanford, UCLA, Yale. Bergmann: Cornell.* Scheele: DSB XII.143-50; Horblit 92; Partington III.205-34; Waller 11225; Gernsheim, Hist. of Photography (1969), pp. 32-33; not in Duveen, Ferguson, Young, or E.F.

Fine. S.n., à Londres et se trouve dans la plupart des capitales de l'Europe 1777, in-8 (12,5x19,5cm), (4) xlv (3) 366pp. et (2) 456pp. et (2) 414pp. et (2 406pp. et (2) 452pp. et (2) 490pp., 6 volumes reliés. - New and improved and enlarged edition (partly original), illustrated with a frontispiece, 12 figures unsigned and six vignettes title (title pages are fully engraved). Nice print. The original 1770 edition was only 3 in 12 Volumes Full Calf tortoiseshell contemporary. Smooth back adorned with jewels and multiple wheels. Triple Net framework on boards. Slices cailloutées blue. Light scuffs on the boards. Some wormholes to bites and worm work in the margins of Volume I of the first 20 sheets. Despite these minor defects, fine copy, with excellent and fresh. Protean book devoted to the study of man, deftly mixing and an always pleasant reading stories, dialogues and plays (there is even quoted in full letters from 'Persian Letter'), the history; the book has an encyclopedic ulterior purpose on the nature of man. If the first volume is devoted strictly speaking the philosophy of nature in history, the following volumes away quickly in order to devote himself entirely to the study of man (morality, religion, politics). Volume IV of particular interest is given, its purpose being the study of monsters of nature (man of the woods, fish man, eunuchs ...) bibliographical sources are valuable. These are the last two volumes studying the relationship of man to the religion which immediately sent the book condemned to fire and banish her in perpetuity with confiscation of property. The latter not only the Christian religion alone, but most then known cults of those Veterans and current ones. At the end of the work, a very severe political reflection on religion. It was called the author of "monkey Diderot." In that it uses the same forms to achieve his goal, no doubt, but this is a lot common among philosophers of the eighteenth. The work is highly original, multiple, and if it is open to criticism, it is in its own qualities. 'From the philosophy of nature is to rediscover and rehabilitate. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information!

PP. Bénédictins...

1777. A Paris, chez Pierre-Théophile Barois... et a Orléans, chez Jacques-Philippe Jacob... 1777. xlii,402pp. Woodcut head- and tailpieces. Table des auteurs. Later hcalf. Marbled boards. With the exlibri of A.N.L. Munby & H.P.K(raus) on the inside front cover. Second, enlarged edition of this catalogue that was first published in 1721. The gift of the Prousteau library founded the library at Orléans. Guillaume Prousteau was a law professor at the university of Orléans. In 1694 he donated his large collection of books to the city of Orléans, and added an annual amount to buy books and to maintain a librarian. He also paid large amounts for the actual construction of the interior of the library. According to Peignot (Répertoire bibliographique universel, page 120), Prousteau was born on 26 May 1626 in Tours and the gift was made in 1694. He states that Prousteau died in 1715, but Neveux & Dacier (Les Richesses de bibliothèques provenciale, I - Paris, 1982) p. 82 cite Prousteau's birth as 1628 and the date of the gift as April 6, 1714. Pages ix-xxx give an account of the history of the library with a short biography of Guillaume Prousteau in which it says that: tout étaint réglé, il fit, le 6 Avril 1714, la donation entre-vifs de la Bibliothèque, pour l'utilité publique. On page xvii there are some manuscript annotations in a contemporary hand. The account of the library also contains a list of benefactors: le Roi (who donated 89 vols), M. l'Abbé d'Hautefeuille, (who donated about 40 vols.)., René Lejay de Massuere (who donated his whole collection of books), M. Antoine Vaslin des Breaux (the largest benefactor who not only donated his books but also money to build shelving), M. Étienne Arterié, Médicin & M.Robert-Joseph Pothier. And there is a list of all librarians. The catalogue is divided into the following main categories: theology, law, history, arts & sciences & belles-lettres. Interesting catalogue with extensive notes for many entries.

Manuscrit].

Beau manuscrit XVIIIe. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Also reviews of three of the best books published that year, including the first volume of Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire pps134-148 and 236-241, the first edition of Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations ,p 241-243; translations of letters from M. Voltaire; and an essay against slavery from Abbe Raynal, p168-76; pagination throughout is out of order and cock-eyed. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A Series of Letters, Addressed to Soame Jenyns, Esq; on Occasion of His View of the Internal Evidence of Christianity

London: Charles Bathurst, 1777. 1st Edition. Leather Bound. Fair. 274 p. 16 cm. Full leather with raised bands and gold impressing on spine. Front board nearly detached and rear hinge cracked. Corners worn. Book seller's label on front pastedown and pencil notations on endpapers. Thumbprint on title page. Top corner off p. 79. Clean and bright throughout. In 1776 Soame Jenyns (1704-1787) published his "View of the Internal Evidence of the Christian Religion." Though at one period of his life he had affected a kind of deistic scepticism, Jenyns now returned to orthodoxy. There seems no reason to doubt his sincerity, questioned at the time, in defending Christianity on the ground of its total variance with the principles of human reason. The work was praised for its literary merits - but not by Archibald Maclaine, author of these letters, who chose to combat some of Jenyns' more fanciful notions regarding Christianity. Maclaine (1722-1804), born in Ireland, was a minister in The Hague before the French Revolution drove him back to Britain. He published this work just a few months after Gibbon published the first volume of his "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" and Gibbon is mentioned in the text. A second edition came out in 1778. Although this book appears to be complete in one volume, spine is marked as volume 2.

The Doctrine of Philosophical Necessity Illustrated; Being an Appendix to the Disquisitions Relating to Matter and Spirit. To which is Added an Answer to the Letters on Materialism, and On Hatrtley's Theory of the Mind.

      J. Johnson, 1777. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. iii-xxxiv, (1), 206, (2)p. Rebacked with new endpapers and original spine label laid down. Bound in full calf. With errata. A1 missing. Author's catalogue to the rear. Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) was a theologian and natural philosopher. 'The Doctrine of Philosophical Necessity' is one of the major metaphysical works of 18th-century. It is meant as an appendix to 'Disquisitions Relating to Matter and Spirit', which he had published earlier in the year. "One of the introductory essays to the 'Hartley' announced Priestley's adoption of monism, which he was then obliged to defend in his 'Disquisitions on Matter and Spirit' (1777), followed by his 'Doctrine of Philosophical Necessity' (1777), which supported a type of mechanistic determinism. Together these books started a flood of criticism which Priestley attempted to answer in a 'Free Discussion of the Doctrines of Materialism and Philosophical Necessity' (1778) with his good friend Richard Price. Price was never to understand, nor did the majority of Priestley's contemporaries, that Priestley saw matter as the manifestation of spiritual force and determinism as an active acceptance of causality in the will of God." - ODNB Condition: Very good. A1 missing, presumed half title. Corners bumped. Small pencil inscriptions to the title page. Occasional scattered foxing.

Leipzig: Breitkopf, 1777.First edition of this quite fascinating cartographical work, which includes a specimen of the author's first experiment in map printing. In this work, Breitkopf (1719-94), the eminent printer, type-founder, and bookseller, describes his invention for printing maps with movable type. "He claimed to have been the inventor of map printing by the use of types, or what is known as 'typometry.' William Haas, a type-founder of Basle, appears to have previously published a method somewhat similar, but Breitkopf had been experimenting on the matter for some twelve years previously, and it was only his dissatisfaction with the result obtained that induced him to keep his achievements to himself."-Bigmore & Wyman, I, p. 81.Nice copy of a book which is oftentimes badly foxed.❧ Bagrow, History of Cartography, p. 219-(with another of Breitkopf's typometrical maps illustrated).
