The Doctrine of Philosophical Necessity Illustrated; Being an Appendix to the Disquisitions Relating to Matter and Spirit. To which is Added an Answer to the Letters on Materialism, and On Hatrtley's Theory of the Mind.

      J. Johnson, 1777. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. iii-xxxiv, (1), 206, (2)p. Rebacked with new endpapers and original spine label laid down. Bound in full calf. With errata. A1 missing. Author's catalogue to the rear. Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) was a theologian and natural philosopher. 'The Doctrine of Philosophical Necessity' is one of the major metaphysical works of 18th-century. It is meant as an appendix to 'Disquisitions Relating to Matter and Spirit', which he had published earlier in the year. "One of the introductory essays to the 'Hartley' announced Priestley's adoption of monism, which he was then obliged to defend in his 'Disquisitions on Matter and Spirit' (1777), followed by his 'Doctrine of Philosophical Necessity' (1777), which supported a type of mechanistic determinism. Together these books started a flood of criticism which Priestley attempted to answer in a 'Free Discussion of the Doctrines of Materialism and Philosophical Necessity' (1778) with his good friend Richard Price. Price was never to understand, nor did the majority of Priestley's contemporaries, that Priestley saw matter as the manifestation of spiritual force and determinism as an active acceptance of causality in the will of God." - ODNB Condition: Very good. A1 missing, presumed half title. Corners bumped. Small pencil inscriptions to the title page. Occasional scattered foxing.

A Series of Letters, Addressed to Soame Jenyns, Esq; on Occasion of His View of the Internal Evidence of Christianity

Charles Bathurst, London 1777 - 274 p. 16 cm. Full leather with raised bands and gold impressing on spine. Front board nearly detached and rear hinge cracked. Corners worn. Book seller's label on front pastedown and pencil notations on endpapers. Thumbprint on title page. Top corner off p. 79. Clean and bright throughout. In 1776 Soame Jenyns (1704-1787) published his "View of the Internal Evidence of the Christian Religion." Though at one period of his life he had affected a kind of deistic scepticism, Jenyns now returned to orthodoxy. There seems no reason to doubt his sincerity, questioned at the time, in defending Christianity on the ground of its total variance with the principles of human reason. The work was praised for its literary merits - but not by Archibald Maclaine, author of these letters, who chose to combat some of Jenyns' more fanciful notions regarding Christianity. Maclaine (1722-1804), born in Ireland, was a minister in The Hague before the French Revolution drove him back to Britain. He published this work just a few months after Gibbon published the first volume of his "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" and Gibbon is mentioned in the text. A second edition came out in 1778. Although this book appears to be complete in one volume, spine is marked as volume 2. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Comte d'Artois].

Letters Of Certain Jews To Monsieur De Voltaire, Containing An Apology For Their Own People, And For The Old Testament; With Critical Reflections And A Short Commentary Extracted From A Greater; Translated by the Rev. Philip LeFanu

Dublin: William Watson, 1777. First edition. Hardcover. Modern black leatherette, spines printed in gilt. Very good. 2 vols. 445, 428 pages. 21 x 14 cm. The controversy of Voltaire's anti-Semitism has been long disputed. He was at war with both Judaism and Christianity. He wanted to purge all men, of whatever persuasion, from these superstitions in order to make them enlightened. He ridiculed each of the major religions, but he was meanest to the Jews: ''You have surpassed all nations in impertinent fables, in bad conduct and in barbarism." Jacobins such as Jean Francois Rewbell in the 1790's and the socialist Pierre Proudhon in the next generation are among the many figures, especially of the left, who justified their arguments against the Jews by quoting Voltaire. Scattered toning, mostly in first and last leaves, tight and firm copy.

A View of Portsmouth, in New Hampshire, taken from the East Shore

J.F.W. Des Barres, London 1777 - Hand-colored etching. Several skilfully repaired tears. Trimmed within platemark left margin. Rare early view of Portsmouth from the New England volume of the Atlantic Neptune This is a view of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, when it was a thriving harbor town. This early etched view was replaced in later editions with a similar but altered and smaller aquatint view from which the seated artist and the grazing cows were removed. Des Barres, of Swiss-Huguenot extraction, studied under the great mathematician Daniel Bernoulli at the University of Basel, before continuing on to the Royal Military College at Woolwich. Upon the outbreak of hostilities with France in 1756, he joined the British Royal American Regiment as a military engineer. He came to the attention of General James Wolfe, who appointed him to join his personal detail. During this period he also worked with the future legendary explorer James Cook on a monumental chart of the St. Lawrence River. From 1762, Des Barres was enlisted to survey the coastlines of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and the Gulf of St. Lawrence, while his colleague, Samuel Holland charted the New England coast. He also managed to gain access to some surveys of the American South, Cuba and Jamaica. In 1774, Des Barres returned to England where he began work on The Neptune . His dedication to the project was so strong, that often at his own expense, he continually updated and added new charts and views up until 1784. That year he returned to Canada, where he remained for a further forty years, becoming a senior political figure and a wealthy land owner, and living to the advanced age of 103. The Atlantic Neptune , the most celebrated sea atlas, contained the first systematic survey of the east coast of North America. Des Barres's synergy of great empirical accuracy with the peerless artistic virtue of his aquatint views, created a work that "has been described as the most splendid collection of charts, plates and views ever published" (National Maritime Museum Catalogue). Upon the conclusion of the Seven Years War, Britain's empire in North America was greatly expanded, and this required the creation of a master atlas featuring new and accurate sea charts for use by the Royal Navy. Des Barres was charged with this Herculean task, publishing the first volume in London in 1775, which was soon followed by three further volumes. Des Barres's monumental endeavor eventually featured over two-hundred charts and views, many being found in several states. Des Barres's charts were immensely detailed, featuring both hydrographical and topographical information, and in many cases remained the most authoritative maps of the regions covered for several decades.

With the armorial bookplate of William Philip Earl of Sefton (Croxteth Library) on the front paste-downs. William Philip Molyneux, 4th Earl of Sefton, KG (1835 –1897) was a British peer. Born Viscount Molyneux, he was the eldest son of Charles Molyneux, 3rd Earl of Sefton and his wife, Mary. The family seats were: Croxteth Hall, Lancs; Abbeystead House, Lancs; Sefton House, Belgravia Sq., London "Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield PC KG (1694– 1773) was a British statesman, and man of letters, and wit. He was born in London, and known as Lord Stanhope until the death of his father, in 1726. After being educated at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, he went on the Grand Tour of the Continent, to complete his education as a nobleman, by exposure to the cultural legacies of Classical antiquity and the Renaissance, and to become acquainted with his aristocratic counterparts and the polite society of Continental Europe. In the course of his post-graduate tour of Europe, the death of Queen Anne (r. 1702–1707) and the accession of King George I (r. 1714–1727) opened a political career for Lord Stanhope, and he returned to England. In the British political spectrum, Lord Stanhope was a Whig, and entered government service, as a courtier to the King, by the mentorship of his relative, James Stanhope, 1st Earl Stanhope, the King's favourite minister, who procured his appointment as Lord of the Bedchamber to the Prince of Wales. The 4th Earl of Chesterfield was a selfish, calculating and contemptuous man, who was not naturally generous, and practised dissimulation ’til it became part of his nature; despite brilliant talents and admirable training, the life of Chesterfield cannot be pronounced a success. His social anxiety, and the pains he took to become an orator, already had been noticed; Horace Walpole said that he, who had heard the great orators of the time, preferred a speech of Chesterfield's to that of any other orator; yet the contemporary opinion was that the Earl of Chesterfield's eloquence did not compare with that of Prime Minister Pitt (the Elder). In that regard, James Boswell reported that the poet Samuel Johnson pointedly said about the nobleman Chesterfield, "This man I thought had been a Lord among wits; but I find he is only a wit among Lords!"         AUTOGRAPH DOCUMENT DATED JULY 1777: A PETITION SIGNED by the daughter of a widowed female proprietor of a shop on Fore Street in Boston, applying for a Liquor License. APPROVED AND SIGNED BY THE SELECTMEN.

Boston, July, 1777. - Boston, July, 1777. 1777. Fair. - A 4-page autograph document penned in an unknown clerk's hand on two 9- 1/2 inch high by 7-1/4 inch wide sheets of buff paper which were once likely attached. The document consists of a 180 word petition by Susannah Carme [?], penned on two sides of the first sheet, applying for a liquor license so that she may support herself and her seventy year old mother: "Times being very difficult she is obliged to exert herself to the utmost & accordingly has opened a shop in Fore Street for the vending of small necessary articles, she apprehends it would be greatly beneficial to her to retail Rum and other Spirits, provided your honours will indulge her with a licence [sic] so to do." Signed "Susannah Carme [?]". The document is further annotated on the third page, granting approval from the selectmen, and signed in ink by: John Scollay, Samuel Austin, Gustavus Fellows, Harbottle Dorr, Thomas Greenough, Jonathan Williams, and John. Preston. The document if additionally docketed on the verso. The petitioner's signature is quite smudged, whereas the other signatures are bold and clear. The document is folded several times with tears to the edges of the horizontal folds, two of which are partially repaired with clear archival tape from the verso. The corners are chipped & creased and there are additional minor tears to the edges. A wonderful revolutionary petition by a woman applying for a liquor license for her shop in Boston. Women in this period commonly ran liquor stores.Among the signers, John Scollay (1711-1790) was chairman of the Boston Selectmen from 1774 to 1790, and served in that position through the period of the American Revolution. One of the founding fathers of our country, he was a member of the Sons of Liberty and a friend of Samuel Adams.Born in Ipswich, Gustavus Fellows was a master and part owner of a ship by the age of 21. He moved to Boston in 1774 where he set up a distillery on Harvard Street. He was briefly driven from his business by "maniacal butchers" as testified by a 1775 letter from General Heath requesting that Captain Fellows be permitted to open a West India Shop in Roxbury. He built several frigates for the French Navy which earned him the friendship of General Lafayette and, in 1776, served as a Captain in the militia. A Boston selectman during the war, he was a member of the Committee of Correspondence, Insurance and Safety. In 1777, he was one of those who signed certification for James Otis who had been pressing for independence prior to the war. Though no proof exists, several have claimed that he was among those who participated in the Boston Tea Party, though he did refuse to carry British tea on his ship. He is said to have rescued the children of the French diplomat John de Crevecoeur during the war, taking care of them until their father could return to America. He was never fully repaid for his loan to the City of Boston to buy uniforms and supplies during the war.The Boston shopkeeper Harbottle Dorr, Jr. (1730-1794) was a member of the Sons of Liberty. He served as a Boston selectman for many years between 1777 and 1791. Documenting the events of the time, Dorr started buying newspapers in 1765 which he annotated in the margins thus leaving behind valuable eye witness source material from the point of view of a Boston citizen in the years leading up to the American Revolution. The Boston patriot Thomas Greenough (1710-1785) was a maker of navigational and surveying instruments. A member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company, he was made captain of the 4th Company 2nd Massachusetts Regiment in the Cape Breton expedition. He became deacon of Boston's New Brick Church in 1755. He served as clerk of the markets, constable and as a Boston selectman. A member of the Revolutionary Committee of Correspondence, he was also active in the efforts to relieve the hardships of those who lost income during the Revolution.
